The Democrats square off tonight at 8 p.m. ET in Las Vegas.

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (CNN) – CNN's Wolf Blitzer preview tonight's Democratic presidential debate, and explains how he plans to make sure the candidates answer the questions they're asked.

Al Perrin   January 23rd, 2008 4:05 pm ET

I read and contributed questions for you to ask during your Democratic debate and i must say I was very disappointed. There were many great questions submitted yet you chose to pitch softballs all night. The questions you chose made the "debate" a waste of my time. YOU'RE NO LOU DOBBS!!!!!!!!!!!

Bobby from SC   January 23rd, 2008 10:33 am ET

Wolf – Regarding the debate, Is it true that you were given questions to ask Hillary. I can believe this because I note from your show that you're a strong Hillary supporter. One can only wonder what you're getting in return.

Chuck   January 21st, 2008 9:20 pm ET

Wolf,

Wow, Edwards hit a home run tonight. Although I may not agree 100% with what he had to say, but at least he had the back bone to stick to the question and truly answer it as to how he planned to deal with the issue at hand.

Obama did pretty good, but he screwed up by getting into the you said this, you did that crap with Hillary.

Hillary... wow.... you have learned well from your time watching your hubby. He was a good tap dancer... and you are doing very good your self. You touched on the issues, but you so easily side stepped the issues when ever possible.

tim pittsburgh pa   January 17th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

Hey Monique, If I remember correctly, it was the Dems. who brought up the question of drugs, not the Rep.

Chuck   January 16th, 2008 6:43 pm ET

I would love to see you do a debate where the canidates must directly address the issues of unemployment, medical care, homelessness, governmental waste and abuse, national debt, and our National Security. How will they address the terrorist threats. If they cant address the question and issues directly with out all this side stepping and tap dancing then they should asked to leave the debate.
I am tired of all this tap dancing and lack of direct answers.

Reality is not one of them is more qualified then the other. They all have their individual qualifications that potentially will help them if they gain the presidency.

Chuck   January 16th, 2008 6:36 pm ET

Wolf, please lets do an insightful investigation into the real back ground of our proposed leaders. Hillary, Obama, Huckabee, and the rest of them say they are the most qualified, so lets see what their real qualifications are. Their accomplishments, their leadership roles, their documented political contributions and such.

Monique   January 15th, 2008 4:14 pm ET

Wolf,
May I suggest you ask Senator Obama, if he wins the nomination, how will he answer the Republican's grilling of his so called "drug" use. The Republicans will not show the courtesy the Democrats have shown.

Last night I heard a wonderful interview with Maya Anjelou on CBC. IF you were to air this interview it would dispell any rediculous assertions that Hillary Clinton is a racist. Maya is voting for Hillary because she has known her for over 20 years and knows she is the best person for the job and a tireless advocate for African Americans. Please check this out and give US viewers a chance to see what we see in Canada – fair coverage.

Wolf,

Everyone knows what the Democrats plan to do for illegal immigrants. It will be a great disservice to Americans if Wolf does not ask some tough questions about how the Democrats plan to pay for the millions and billions of dollars that the amnesty programs are going to cost. STOP asking what are you going to do for illegal immigrants and start asking how are you going to pay for it.

Steve Long Beach, CA   November 16th, 2007 2:09 pm ET

Wolf talks tough and then caves-in at the appproach of Hillary. Gee, what a surprise...another CNN anchor on their knees before the Clinton throne.

Anonymous   November 15th, 2007 9:23 pm ET

I don't care if this is posted on web or not. But what's wrong with the camera man. Can't he hold his camera still? This is CNN not MTV.

Susan Bernstein   November 15th, 2007 9:10 pm ET

Not enough questions and time given to of Sen Joe Biden. Questions asked were primarily directed to the top 4 runners.

Vacaville, California   November 15th, 2007 7:51 pm ET

wolf blitzer ask the democratic candidates if they support HR 676 the single payer healthcare bill. Thanks, Dr. Lawrence E. Gowin, Vacaville, CA/

josh, akron, oh   November 15th, 2007 4:53 pm ET

Keith James Louttit, well when CNN is sued by a former anchor (Judith Regan) for being quieted to prevent damage to a democratic candidate's candidacy (Giuliani) then you can bash them.

Until then, enjoy your sensationalist, neo-conservative promoting, rumor hyped, lie spreading FAUX NEWS.

AT least CNN TRIES to keep itself honest.

Do you know who Roger Ailes is? You're sadly far from informed. Good luck.

Dave, Cheverly, MD   November 15th, 2007 4:25 pm ET

Hillary is ALWAYS given the questions before Debates that have CNN involved. That's how they used that tricky gotcha question to Obama about talking to Dictators. They snuck in the words "pre-conditions" hoping he would over look it in the heat of the moment. Caught him off guard because he was not used to their trickery. You can bet they will be hatching another plan for tonight.
They tried to get him in SC Debate with that all troops out by 2013. Knowing Hillary would follow up with "you have to leave troops for guarding our Embassy etc..” By that Debate Obama was on to their trickery and caught that. Hillary and the Media would have said he was naive and in-experienced. Obama will have to be on guard for all candidates and the Moderators attacks. I don’t know why the Media is Campaigning for Hillary and Rudy. But it is clear to all that that is what is going on.

P.S. Now watch to see if CNN will event post this.

John New York, NY   November 15th, 2007 4:25 pm ET

I'm tired of Clinton supporters expressing supposed "shock" and shedding crocodile tears about "negative attacks" from Mrs. Clinton's opponents.

All primaries throughout recent history have been negative and vicious- and the parties ended up unifying after.

Forget about likability, leadership and character when electing the 2008 DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE!

Posted By MacKenzie : November 15, 2007 1:41 pm

So, according to your theory which of the republican candidate fits to your criteria? What a joke???

Terry, El Paso, TX   November 15th, 2007 2:40 pm ET

Why would we want a light-weight show business personality like Rush Limbaugh to interview a serious candidate? He would more suited to interview Geraldo or Paris Hilton or Ben Affleck.

I find it hard to believe that anyone can actually use the phrase "Liberal Media" with a straight face. Believe me, neither Time-Warner nor Rupert Murdoch has ordered their news outlets to favor Democrats. Of course, those who use the phrase cannot define "Liberalism," "Conservatism," or "Media."

J Houston, TX   November 15th, 2007 2:33 pm ET

hundreds of thousands of innocents have died, our planet is heating up and people can't afford health care.

Hundred's of thousands of innocents? Where?

Our planet heats up and cools all the time...what's new?

People can't afford or CHOOSE not to afford. Most of the foreclosure cases these days simply require financial counseling to understand that they are spending too much elsewhere. The same goes for healthcare. Let's face it, people won't give up their cell phone to pay for healthcare...you can't blame the government for that. You can buy good health insurance by simply stopping cable service and terminating your cellphone. Go to the public library for internet access. And there you have it, problem solved.

Will, Boca Raton FL   November 15th, 2007 2:03 pm ET

Mr. Wolf, please be fair. Try not to be soft on Mrs. Clinton like you did the last time.

Alexander Djordjevich/North Royalton, Ohio   November 15th, 2007 2:02 pm ET

It's a win-win scenario for America. If Wolf plays patty-cakes, he will obviously be shielding an underqualified candidate. As a result, his credibility and that of his network shall be hurt. Should Wolf pursue the correct path and question these presidential candidates accordingly, the most qualified person shall stand out. I cannot understand how these politicians can grill the hell out of Supreme court nominees, yet expect to avoid answering any themselves. While most mediators will accept a generalization as a definitive answer, that isn't good enough anymore. I demand to know where these candidates stand on every important issue. People may hate the war, but at least this President is concise and unwavering. If Hillary can handle the boys, as hubby Bill has implied, he needs to let it happen and quit protecting her. The NY times should take equal note. If the media has to shield us from someone's real identity, how can it be good for this country? Let the hammer fall where it must!!!!!!

Denzil E. Whyatt 1683 Cedar Hill Dr Grovetown, Ga 30813   November 15th, 2007 1:56 pm ET

Instead of going for a total troop withdrawal, which the President keep veto, why not apptempt to reduce the length of tour from 15 to 12 months. If you can't get what you want why not compromise to take care of the soldiers and their families? The legislative boddy can't please everyone, BE FIRM, no more money.

bib Waterloo IA   November 15th, 2007 1:55 pm ET

I want a moderator who asks, thoughtful, intelligent and relevant questions. For the most part, the debates on both sides have been hijacked by sponsors who belong on entertainment television. Who cares about UFO's...hundreds of thousands of innocents have died, our planet is heating up and people can't afford health care. I find it incredulous that the highlights of these debates are dribble. But if that is what captures the attention of the public, well then that is what they will get. No wonder there's an explosion of "reality" TV. It's mindless.

Will, Boca Raton FL   November 15th, 2007 1:50 pm ET

Mr. Wolf, you are one of my favorite newscasers. I am going to watch the debate tonight. Please ask Mrs. Clinton this question for me.

My Question is: Do you believe your husband deserves an apology from the religious voters if Mr. Rudy becomes the Republican nominee?

Will, Boca Raton FL   November 15th, 2007 1:42 pm ET

I would like to ask Mrs. Clinton a question if I had a chance. My Question is: Do you believe your husband deserves an apology from the religious voters if Mr. Rudy becomes the Republican nominee?

MacKenzie   November 15th, 2007 1:41 pm ET

I watch CNN everyday because I find the reporting fair. Don't blame Wolf for the Clinton's expertise in getting press - they are MASTERS. The Clintons know that THE POLLS are newsworthy and can help Hillary's efforts on a daily basis. Until now...THE POLLS clearly represented NAME RECOGNITION only...not likability, character, leadership, etc. Hillary cannot WIN on likability, character and leadership so she has everyone believing (in a stepford like way) that she is THE ONLY CANDIDATE THAT CAN BEAT THE REPUBLICANS! Forget about likability, leadership and character when electing the 2008 DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE!

AJ, IL   November 15th, 2007 1:38 pm ET

Somehow with Wolf as moderator, I don't think it will the good debate some people are expecting. Following up Tim Russert and Brian Williams is going to be hard. Plus, we all know CNN is biased towards Hillary Clinton and Wolf works for CNN. Let's see if Wolf will go after the candidates' stances on different national priorities and challenge them, especially Hillary.

OBAMA in '08!

Linda Ross, Las Vegas, NV   November 15th, 2007 1:26 pm ET

For the past two presidential elections no media or american people paid much attention as to how Bush conducted his debates or controlled public appearances. And now that Hillary is leading the polls and being the former first lady, she is been scrutinzed to death. Why would this media focus all attention to her? Let her be treated as one of the contestants as Kuscinich or Ron Paul. Why are the questions directed at her personally? And, why she should get an extra coverage on questioning? Let there be an impartial debate where everyone gets the same time.

josh   November 15th, 2007 1:26 pm ET

He'll have his hands full with Clinton. Unless, of course, he chooses to continue the passes.

Ethel, New York, NY   November 15th, 2007 1:22 pm ET

Hooray for Hillary! She has everyone believing that she is the only democratic candidate that can beat the Republicans! This is the perfect strategy for a candidate that is not well liked, admired or respected.

Wolf,

We know the Clinton's parse their words; regarding NYS drivers licenses, please ask HRC if "undocumented" means without a Social Security Number in Clintonspeak.
Proper documentation to the Clintons may very well be a library card.

Daniel, NY   November 15th, 2007 1:01 pm ET

Two new Iowa polls out this morning show how tight the race is, as Clinton holds on to the smallest of leads in both of them. Link to polls.

Mike B   November 15th, 2007 12:54 pm ET

Honestly if Wolf doesn't come through here and really push Hillery to tell us what she will do, he will never be considered a real journalist again. We deserve to know where she stands, not in 4-8 years from now when she pardons the Enron boys. Wolf is either going to come through with some sharp questions and good analysis or hes going to be Hillery Clinton's new white house press secretary.

KEITH JAMES LOUTTIT   November 15th, 2007 12:54 pm ET

I have just received an E-Mail from Wolf, and he assures me there will be no need for concern, he and Hillary have signed a PNA (Pre-Newscast Agreement) limiting all questions to topics already reviewed and agreed upon by both candidate and moderator, that are totally within the guidelines of CNN's most trusted name in news!

Unfortunately I won't be able to view tonight's broadcast of this spectacular event, I will be at work, trying to earn enough to hopefully leave something to my children in the event that Hillary actually succeeds and wins the Presidency, something besides the legacy which I hoped I could leave, after having worked hard my entire life not knowing that Mr Bill would be selling nights at the Lincoln Bed and Breakfast, selling Pardons to FOB's as well as family and friends of Hillary, and raising campaign money from people like Norman Hsu, the disgraced fundraiser for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential campaign.

Steve, Chelsea, MI   November 15th, 2007 12:53 pm ET

KEITH JAMES LOUTTIT, you say that you've switched to FoxNews.com to be informed and not instructed? Amazing. The only reason it seems that CNN has a "liberal" bias is because FoxNews is so conservative it makes every other news outlet appear liberal.

Sarah   November 15th, 2007 12:45 pm ET

Can CNN please confirm or deny that Wolf Blitzer was approached/warned by the Clinton campaign? Also, it is reported that Senator Clinton was given Mr. Blitzer's questions in advance of the debate. Can you please tell us if this is true?

Thank you.

KC Buffalo, NY   November 15th, 2007 12:39 pm ET

Those of you who adore Rush Limbaugh need to realize that he is very much the schoolyard bully. His idea as to the best way to discuss an issue is to do a lot of name calling and chest thumping. He could not begin to take on Hillary, Biden or Obama in a one to one meeting. Wake up people–find a few of the people who attended college with Rush–if you can. I believe the highest degree he has is a high school degree. He finished not one semester of college. For those of you who think that college doesn't matter, obviously you can get a little or a lot from a college education, but at least it opens up the world to you and it enlarges your views on life. Perhaps Rush wouldn't be so closed minded and shallow if he had a larger educational platform upon which to base his beliefs.

Fran Teti, Wayne, Pa.   November 15th, 2007 12:38 pm ET

I have 3 points to make:
1) It does not add to the quality of the commentary to have gross comments and language like some in this "conversation" You must be very worried about the Republican fate in this coming year to resort to such uneducated commentary.
2) As a very strong Hillary Clinton supporter and long time Demococrat, I hope Wolf does ask the hard questions to ALL of the candidates and not make it all about Senator Clinton. Wolf, just make sure you give the same heat and persistence to Senators Edwards and Obama. I would also like to see you admonish all the candidates that you want the American viewers to hear the policy related responses about themselves, not go into personal attacks which weakens the whole process.
3) To the other commenters and voters, why don't we see if WE can take up the level of conversation about the candidates....whether a candidate has a preplanted question or not, we should focus on the policy answer. There is no such thing as a simple yes/no response to most questions. If a candidate gives one, where is the depth, where is the ability evaluate their real understanding of the issue being questionned. We the electorate need to show some thoughtfulness and intelligence as we absorb these serious issues about the country's future.

Bob Ramos, Corpus Christi, TX   November 15th, 2007 12:08 pm ET

I will most likely watch the debate tonite. But, judging from Wolf's last performance as moderation, I fully expect to be dissapointed in one respect.

During the last debate Wolf moderated, intentionally or unintentionally, the majority of the debate was monopolized by Obama, Clinton and Edwards. The remaining candidates were virtually ignored by Wolf. I hope that this time, he will do a much better job and try to give each candidate equal time. The audiences and the candidates deserve this.

roger, conway sc   November 15th, 2007 12:01 pm ET

I do not feel that Wolfe or CNN treat Hillary any different than the other candidates, she is just in the news more due to being the front runner, who she is, & because of the recent screw up of planting a question in Iowa which was a big mistake BUT if you don't think the others have done things similar or the same you live on another planet THEY are all politicans...If Edwards or Obama were the front runner it would be the same issue...I am just proud to be a democrat we are not perfect but I am so tired of the GOP and its lying back stabbing hypocrites, who judge everyone else but themselves, have got this nation is so much debt and complain about PORK yet are spending Billions on a war in the wrong country and have brought disgrace to our nation. Yet they have this holier than thou attitude and expect everyone to believe & do what they say just because they said it....GO HILLARY 08

Ron Westman, Omaha, Nebraska

come on, these people are to afraid to have a debate on fox news, they avoid people who dont think like them, it would be interesting to listen to her or barack on rushies show, but then they would have to answer questions to an audience that isnt supporting them. It will never happen with these spineless twerps, at least repubs go on pmsnbc and cnn.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   November 15th, 2007 11:50 am ET

Wolf is one of my favorite people and best qualified to host this debate. Wolf is going to be agressive and not submissive. I'm a democrat and my advice to democrats who aren't familiar with Wolf's style, don't get angry. All political parties get "equal opportunity" with Wolf. Ask Dick Cheney.

Randi, Jackson, KY   November 15th, 2007 11:48 am ET

I hope Wolf has the kahunas to ask Rudy about the latest news on Kerik and him and the Judith Regan story. This will be a tue test of whether CNN, and Mr. Blitzer, really do ask the hard questions. How about it, Wolf? The moderators do not cut Hillary any slack when it comes to delicate subjects, which you shouldn't, but now let's see if you can stick it to the former mayor just the same way.

Richard Tabuteau, Atlanta, GA   November 15th, 2007 11:45 am ET

I remember the last CNN debate when Sen. Clinton effectively shut Wolf Blitzer down. He couldn't get a word in. She set the terms of the debate and he complied. No one should be surprised Sen. Clinton slaps him around one more time.

Tom - Dedham, Mass   November 15th, 2007 11:42 am ET

After raging at Tim Russert for daring to question her, Hillary Clinton's campaign is reportedly warning CNN's Wolf Blitzer to follow the pre-approved script.

CNN's Wolf Blitzer has been warned not to focus Thursday's Dem debate on Hillary. 'This campaign is about issues, not on who we can bring down and destroy,' top Clinton insider explains. 'Blitzer should not go down to the levels of character attack and pull 'a Russert." Blitzer is set to moderate debate from Vegas, with questions also being posed by Suzanne Malveaux.

What's disturbing here is that when the Bush admin engages in these types of actions (skewed questions and tough press handling), it provokes anger and resentment from the media. When Hillary Clinton does it, it provokes more adulation.

No more "wag the dog", it is more like "wag the finger" and dictate what is supposed to happen, in college it was called a lecture, her campaign considers it business as usual.

Bill,baltimore,md   November 15th, 2007 11:40 am ET

I don't understand why a guy who keep saying on cnn clinton lead, clinton is leading can moderate a debate and how can voters trust him. I think the majority of the people will be watching how this will be steered just because of the name 'Wolf' than listening and focusing on the real issues that are facing America....
I personally hope this won't be the case because I wanna win trust of my upcoming president again....

Mitch, Dayton, OH   November 15th, 2007 11:37 am ET

Will Wolf and CNN have the guts to ask the Earmark Queen how billions of taxpayer dollars channeled to Lockheed Martin - the dominant Lead Systems Integrator in Defense - with no provision in the pork for additional oversight, qualifies as "fiscal responsibility?" David Walker, Comptroller General, reported to Congress in Dec 2006 that lack of oversight was a leading cause of waste and fraud by Lead Systems Integrators.

Maria, Houston   November 15th, 2007 11:25 am ET

Phil,
haha, yes, she's dancing around issues to avoid straight answers, but she is unlikable like Heather Mills, so I don't think she'd win...

Steve, NY   November 15th, 2007 11:23 am ET

Don't even need to ask the question about Rudt.......the answer is YES.

Ron Westman, Omaha, Nebraska   November 15th, 2007 11:20 am ET

Good day,

I would like to have Wolf Blitzer ask the following question to Senator Hillary Clinton tonight at the Democratic Debate;

Senateor Clinton a viewer has sent me the following question for YOU to answer: "Senator Clinton you have said you will go ten (10) rounds with anyone. Will you declare tonight that YOU WILL go on the Rush Limbaugh show for three (3) hours for a one-on-one discussion?"

The viewer further states "I am tired of politians who say they will something yet will not follow through with their promises. Will you promise to meet with Rush before the Iowa Caucuss?

Wolf Blitzer, I truly hope you will ask this question tonight during the debate. It appears the Democratics are afraid to go on other news outlets to include Fox News. What are they scared of it their message is that good?

Ivan, Chicago, Illinois   November 15th, 2007 11:16 am ET

Will Rudy's absence fron Iowa and New Hampshire hurt him. I don't see that question asked by your CNN. Is CNN becoming the water carrier for Fox News?

Phil Chicago, Ill   November 15th, 2007 11:13 am ET

Hillary deserves to win! No, not the Democratic nomination ... Dancing with the Stars.

Good Luck, Wolf!

Vox Populi, Nova, VA   November 15th, 2007 11:04 am ET

Tonight's debate could be a real showdown and well worth viewing due to the multitude of Hillary Clinton's copious contradictions and flawed flip-flops.

1. Hillary Clinton's extensive support for the attempt that could provide potential terrorists and illegals with valid driver license IDs and which would encourage backdoor voting rights to non-citizens — and then her sudden about-face to non-support once the tide of public opinion turned against her long-held support for this policy.

2. The planting of safe and friendly questions by her campaign among the audiences of various town meetings. Hillary Clinton denied knowing of what was occuring within her own tightly-managed campaign clique — if she is not aware of what is going on so close to home, how aware is she of the issues affecting this country and the world beyond?

I'll be tuning in to see the potential fireworks ... I hope expectations are not only met, but exceeded!

KEITH JAMES LOUTTIT   November 15th, 2007 11:00 am ET

So sorry Wolf, you've been a dependable guy to listen to, but your organization's censorship and partisan bias has made me switch to FoxNews.com. I'd rather be informed, and not instructed.

I wish you well, and I'm sure if I could've IM'd you this message, I would've, but don't take it personally, think about it next time you negotiate your contract at CNN!

Zack.NYC,NY   November 15th, 2007 10:54 am ET

Thanx wolf....To see you outside the situation room and better understand why you keep supporting Clinton makes me better voter when I go to bed tonight. Hey, I am curious if she is your wife because this is getting rediculous! I hope you don't have a topic that suits her tonight like drivers licence to illegal immigrants....

Chris, Pensacola FL   November 15th, 2007 10:50 am ET

It will be interesting to see how CNN treats Clinton vice the other candidates. Hopefully we'll see equality across the board. However, the track record of supporting Clinton is still too great to get fired up for the debate.

Randy S. Lawton, OK   November 15th, 2007 10:49 am ET

Puh-lease! Wolf is so far up Hilary's anal orifice it's gonna be real surprising how he's gonna be able to ask anything tonight.

I'll bet he's gonna softball Clinton so much it would destroy his credibility, if he had any.
