It is far past time for the senate to prevent the abuse of the recess appointments. When the law allowing the recess appointments was written, it could take 60 to 90 days to get a quarm back into D. C. if there is an emergency requiring an appointment vote. Today, if an emergency were to arise, the senate could be back in D. C. in 48 hours with little trouble. The recess appointment law should be repealed.

Bush has repeatedly abused this law, as he has ignored others he does not like.

I greatly appreciate the effort the Democrats are putting into preventing further abuse.

Dear Republicans: It matters not what you say anymore. In fact I dont think I want to even give you the time of day with your absurd ideas and ignorant observations. You and your retarded Evangelicals have lost the Senate and the House. And pull up your panties for this one, you are losing the White House too. Combine that with the enormous amount of seats being added to the Democratic majority in the house and senate in the 08 election and you can get a clear picture of what Americans really think.

Finally, our Senate did something smart. Its not hard to break Bush down little by little and I've been extremely dissapointed in the way Senate democrats have not stood up to him in the past. Keep it up!

Preventing recess appointments is not only good from the point of view of idealists who like oversight, or politically partisan Democrats. It's also good for pragmatic reasons that some of you commenters should think hard about. Recess appointments are another way of "fixing the facts around the policy" - because if you install a crony, they aren't going to speak up as much when the boss wants to implement a Really Bad Idea. Iraq is one of many examples, but read this comment again in 2020 and it will work just as well. Genuine scrutiny is good for everyone and the Senate is doing a commendable thing by preventing any president from doing an end run around the confirmation process.

Politics aside, this seems like awfully shameless way to bypass the intent of the founding fathers. They gave those powers to the President for a reason. Such a ridiculous mockery of a "session" of the Senate surely violates that intent.

In all reality I don't believe our founders could possibly have imagined the American people electing someone as utterly contemptuous of the Constitution, not to mention incompetent in every area of decision making.

Article II, Section 3 of the Constitution, Powers and Duties of the President states "he may, on extraordinary occassions, convene both Houses, or either of them, and is case of disagreement between them, with respect to the time of adjournment, he may adjourn them until such time as he thinks proper".

I wouldn't be suprised if some time in the next year, Bush/Cheney would see fit to use the second half of this clause in the Constituition to adjourn Congress and not see a time when it is proper to reconvene it.

And the "liberal = Democrats = socialism" mantra is getting a little old and tired even for dittoheads, don't you think?

Michael Sheridan, Grand Rapids, MI

Nope, its being said because the dems are being overrun by liberals who want to have government regulate everything from, making sure people dont get to much money, because thats not fair to the poor, or taxing everything you do so gubment can provide everything for you. that sounds like liberal socialism which finds a huge home in the democrap party. sorry.

Bush didn't lie; he acted on the same info that congress did when they voted to go to war. That action prevented thousands of more lives being destroyed by Saddam and terrorists.... Bush is for democracy and freedom; The liberal Democrats are for Socialism....

Posted By Gretta, FL : November 24, 2007 1:22 pm

The Bush administration lied to Congress - the National Intelligence Estimate of October 2002 was doctored to inflate the dangers allegedly posed by Saddam, to promote the evidence of discredited sources like "Curveball", and to remove many of the caveats where the intelligence community disagreed with the Cheney/Rumsfeld "Office of Special Plans". And Saddam didn't have anything to do with 9/11, a fact admitted to by Bush and Cheney whenever they are forced to answer a direct question (and one with which you appear to be unfamiliar - not surprising, if you've only been listening to Limbaugh and Fox News).

As for Bush being in favor of "democracy and freedom" - his unwavering support of undemocratic regimes like those of Saudi Arabia and Pakistan give the lie to that statement. Bush is like far too many of our previous administrations - of both Dem and GOP persuasions - in allying with non-democratic regimes for short term gain at the expense of long-term strategic principles. Our foreign policy performance over the past fifty years is littered with embarrassments like Somoza, Pinochet, Marcos, the Shah of Iran, and Rumsfeld's buddy Saddam.

Bush didn't lie; he acted on the same info that congress did when they voted to go to war. That action prevented thousands of more lives being destroyed by Saddam and terrorists. On the other hand Clinton lied and his actions (infidelity) had the effect of telling generations of young people that such behavior is ok. Stop believing the liberal press. Bush is for democracy and freedom; The liberal Democrats are for Socialism. Move to France if you like Big Brother taking "care" of you at the expense of others.

Way to go Democrats, if Bush wants his appointments confirmed, bring them out in the light of day and let them be interviewed by the Senate.

If Bush's appointments are too bias to do an honest job, it's the Senate's job to keep them out of those positions.

"And the founding fathers gave the senate the power to confirm seats Bush though time and time again used the recess appointment to bypass that so don't try and lay the blame entirely at the feet of the democrats.
I support them in this, true the president needs the power but it should used only to fill a spot in an emergency and not as he was doing which was because some of his choices got blocked up some".

CD, if it were as you say, then a half dozen other recent Presidents would be just as near, equally, or more-so guilty, and the past Senates would have engaged in such "Constitution-protecting" 28 second sessions.! The fact that the only thing different now from before is the one-person sessions indicates a far different apparatus at work here. Its called Obstructionism. The trouble is that the Dems on the Judiciary tieup too many choices in committee, so that they can get the simple up-or-down vote on the Floor. It is one more symptom of why the approval ratings of Congress are far lower than GB's. The Pelosi and Reid Congress !!! Don't change a thing, as I can't think of a quicker way to get Conservatives back in power.

What you Bush supporters don't get is he places idiots like him in high offices. I mean Harriet Miers for Supremem Court. It's like your going to have heart surgurey and the doctor was hand picked by a fellow dr who was a friend of his. His only experience is watching operations done on TV but he really feels he's ready to cut you open. Would you let him do it? That is who Bush appoints in these offices. I mean look at FEMA with Brownie and now Chertoff. They both no nothing about their jobs. And for those who still think Bush is great google 09/10/01 you will see Donald Rumsfailed announce the Pentagon misplaced 2.3 TRILLION dollars. Where's the money? Oh and look 9/11 What money?

How times has it to be proven deregulation and privatization makes all conservatives nothing less than White Collar Criminals Stealing billions perhaps trillions of dollars from the nation whereas ordinary criminals are probably responsible for stealing millions
Nationalize all their ill-gotten assets starting with Big Oil, Pharmaceutical Companies who have been stealing R&D from our Universities anyway, Insurance Companies, G.E., Monsanto etc.
Then go after their Judges and federal bureaucrat implants. Tax or nationalize the assets of churches that are preaching or are affiliated politically.

Politics aside, this seems like awfully shameless way to bypass the intent of the founding fathers. They gave those powers to the President for a reason. Such a ridiculous mockery of a "session" of the Senate surely violates that intent.

It's to bad the Democratic have to resort to such tactic's to combat the weasel but it is this adiministration who has not played by the rules. This administration is making the Nixon look like a saint. It is time for the American people to stand up and write their representatives and start impeachment proceeding for this corrupt administration.

The reason the majority of Americans are upset with Congress is their inability to overide the Republicans support of Bush on issues they were elected to change. They have continually tried to change direction but are thwarted by the minority of Republicans who support the position of King George.

Only 423 days left, I hope democracy will return soon. I am looking to a return to WE THE PEOPLE in our government.

Sonja said 11/23/07 @ 3:33. "Yet these people [Democrats] call the shots for all Democrats to follow when making laws for Aamerican and deecisions [affecting] everyone who lives in America."

If you could see past your nose, dear, it was the Bush/Republican administration that created (in the name of the American people) the catastrophies we now have in this country and in the Middle East.

If you really want to know what's going on in this government, find something to listen to and read rather than the mainstream media.

The independent media have these corporate media beat all over the place and the American people and teh corporate media know it. But the corporate media, like you, just can't give up their loyalities.

You see, propaganda is their bread and butter.

You don't have to be a blind conservative not to see it, just an ignorant one to deny it.

To the above entity that said that Bush made "more recess appointments than all the other Presidents combined". How about a simple "liar liar pants on fire" ! While GB2 is up to about 175'ish, here's the stats:

According to the Senate historian's office, Bush has made 165 recess appointments, putting him fourth in recent history behind Ronald Reagan with 243, Harry Truman with 195 and Dwight Eisenhower with 193. Bush's predecessor Bill Clinton made 140 recess appointments.Reagan and Eisenhower were Republicans, Truman and Clinton Democrats.

Struggling with the facts my liberal friend !!

What some of you are failing to realize is the Senate and House are made up of republicans and democrats, so when you say the democrat controlled congress is not accomplishing anything that includes your republican representatives as well. Bush has had more recess appointments than all other presidents combined in order to get his incompentent cronies in very important positions. You republicans need to wake up and see the harm Bush has done to this country.

If ever a president needed to be impeached it is Bush because his lies have caused close to 4,000 lives to be lost and thousands more injured. Clinton's lie only involved him and his wife.

To Rex in Toledo,

What ARE the other options? I lost loved ones in more than one war and have nephews in Iraq now. They CHOSE to enlist AFTER the war in Iraq started. They know the risk. This is a war against radical Islamists who hate us. If you really think this is war is about oil, stop using it. War is war. Stop fighting and be enslaved. Read the history books.

If we had a President that actually performed the duties of his office in accordance with the Constitution and obtained the advise and consent of the Senate on appointments this would not be needed.

The manner in which Bush has used recess appointments is a slap in the face of the American people, its time the Senate slapped back.

The Dem Obstructionist Congress ('DOC') has the lowest Congressional approval ratings in history. This Senate mini-session move is an example of the myriad of reasons. The 'DOC' repeatedly introduced 'Iraqi Freedom Action Surrender' bills they know will be vetoed, then use this recent tactic to block any political progress in the US. Jack "ABSCAM" Murtha accused US soldiers of killing Iraqi civilians in cold-blood, without offering any proof, only to later be proven 100% wrong. These are Socialist policies, which aid our enemies. Any U.S. citizen who considers voting again to re-elect these traitors is ill-informed and ignorant.

Another indication of why we need a third party in America. These sleazy democrats would rather burn our tax money on stupid pet tricks like this instead of just doing their job and voting up or down on legitimate confirmations. What fools they make us look like. Had enough? Dump all of them and lets start over.

Seems the Congressional Democrats have taken a page out of Clinton's book. They both seem very good at "quickies".

This game is additional proof of how ineffective Congress will be as long as the focus is partisan posturing instead of working together to solve the nation's problems. However, maybe the Republicans could stop this charade so we are all spared the dribble about how this pretense shows that the Democrats are vigilent in protecting the nation from the constitutonal process of presidential appointments. Have a few Republican senators show up at the scheduled start time for one of these phoney sessions. If the session were then called to order by the sole Democrat senator present, wouldn't the super majority of Republican senators present have the power to confirm any appointments they wanted? My guess is that the session would not be called to order, and any pending recess appontments could become effective.

It is so sad to still see delusional people here defending a president that has never believed our constitution applies to him. I support any action the dems take against him. And for the record, those lacking support for the military right now are the republicans since they defeated a funding bill. Bush is like a spoiled little brat-if he can't have what he wants he has a tantrum.

As a Republican, I say good....but then like anything else I ask why don't they change the law to state that a president can NEVER make unconfirmed recess appointments....wait....because they don't want to do that in case they ever get in power again....more games from the Dems....good job

If Sonja (or someone else) changed a few names, I would have believed this was a rant about the Grim Ol' Party who has done its level best to destroy the county at home and abroad.

Unelected Karl Rove calls most of the shots for the GOP and when you talk on pandering, the Evangelical Christians pop into the picture ... talk about a group that wants their way, for everyone, and now.

Take another sip of fool-aide, turn on Faux news and we'll call you when the elections are over.

The Congressional and Senate Bush-butt kissers are the ones responsible for the legislative branch being so slow to get anything done. Frankly, those low approval ratings others here speak about are OWNED by Republicans...just like the incredible shrinking president OWNS his gutter numbers.

Finally, FINALLY, the Democratic majority, small as it is, figures out a way to keep Dubya from sneaking around and getting his own way with his arrogant recess appointments.

Now if they could only figure out how to keep him from excusung himself and the executive branch from abiding by laws the laws the legislators write and pass with all those signing statements the Shrub scribbles in the margins.

Politics aside, this seems like awfully shameless way to bypass the intent of the founding fathers. They gave those powers to the President for a reason. Such a ridiculous mockery of a "session" of the Senate surely violates that intent.

Step back and look at this from a non-partisan point of view. All of you democrats who are supporting this, the dems have now set a precedent. Whenver there is a Democratic President who nominates someone at a time when the Republicans controll congress, they will blindly oppose him/her (such as how the dems are doing now) the Republicans will now do the same thing. Of course the argument is that the President should nominate someone that is supported by both parties but I truely believe that the democrats in this case don't care about the nominee they hate the president so much they would oppose Ted Kennedy himself if President Bush nominated him for a position.

So why are they getting the no name grunt Senators no one ever heard about to do this? Where is Senator Clinton? Where is Senator Obama? Why aren't they standing with their party in defying the administration by holding 30 second sessions in which they are the only member present? Could it be because they see this for what it is-a poorly conceived political game aimed at making the administration as impotent and useless as the Congress has been since the change of power?
