Cheney is set to undergo a heart procedure Monday afternoon.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Vice President Dick Cheney will undergo a heart procedure Monday afternoon after doctors discovered an irregular heartbeat, his office announced.

Cheney was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, an irregular heartbeat, when he visited his doctor Monday morning complaining of a lingering cough after a cold. It was then that the arrhythmia was diagnosed, the vice president's office reported.

Doctors described the procedure — intended to shock the heart back into normal rhythm — as routine, and said they expect the vice president to return to his residence Monday night.

The 66-year-old vice president has had a history of heart ailments — including four heart attacks dating back to 1978 — and was briefly hospitalized in January 2006 after suffering shortness of breath.

"Uneducated leftist"? I suggest you do a poll at Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Princeton, Berkeley, etc and see how many are leftist and how many are rightist. Face it, red states are mostly in the less developed south"

WHAT AN IGNORANT STATEMENT!! One could go into the inner cities and conclude just the opposite. That too would be ignorant, and racist.

Peter from san jose,,,,,,,, CNN ,, this persons comment were way out of line,,, where is your heads on this one. You left off my original comment hear when there were only 8 comments but you would allow filth on ? If a person cant get there point across without cursing, what real value does it hold ?

Jenny from Chicago: oooh… you are not going to watch CNN again, wow, CNN is so scared! They are going to run out of business soon because some gun-loving, war-mongering conservative named Jenny is going to boycott them.

Go back to watching your fake "news" on Fox.

Ryan in Indianapolis, Brad of the great state of Texas, and all the Bushies in this forum pretend such dismay and shock over the wide swath of Americans who despise Dick Cheney and his ilk. I hope you remember the 3,000+ young people he and Bush sent to die in Iraq for nothing but oil.

Ron, Kingman, Az   November 27th, 2007 4:05 pm ET

I just read all of the comments posted by the idiots in America. I feel like Ijust took a walk in a communist country or an Islamic country, We as Americans never wish anybody would die. Human life is precious, All of the people who said he should die need to go back to Islam, they are the only ones who don't respect life.

Christopher, Madison, WI   November 27th, 2007 2:31 pm ET

To wish ill on another person shows your lack of humanity and intelligence. You probably did not even vote.
Posted By Steve, Colorado Springs : November 26, 2007 3:52 pm .

I vote and yes I hope to hell that he dies slow and painfully. I'll bet on the flip side of the coin that all the "terrorists" would die. But in mind I'm sure that would be okay because it's the "Christian" thing to do.
This man is pure evil and deserves the biggest heart attack ever!

Len, Fallbrook, CA   November 27th, 2007 2:05 pm ET

I wonder what the comments would be like if "Cheeseburger Bill", aka "Slick Willy" would be going thru this procedure?

Wishing some one ill will, reguardless of who he is or what he has done is telling, very telling….

Ain't Karma something Dick. All of lying, manipulation, greed and negative energy that you put out in the universe is coming back to you bite you in butt. Ain't life grand!!

Kate, Aurora CO   November 27th, 2007 12:23 pm ET

I won't stoop to the Republican level so I will wish him well, as far as his health goes anyway. Must be nice though. To have the added luxury of never seeing a medical bill and being insured under one of the best policies. Too bad the majority of your fellow Americans and their children are uninsured and can't afford to get proper healthcare. Maybe you should think about that before supporting a veto for child health care. Just a thought.

Michelle D. - Atlanta, GA   November 27th, 2007 11:20 am ET

Amazing the quality of healthcare treatment you get when you are in Public Office! Too bad those on HMO's can't get the treatment they need.

My father taught in the inner-city schools of Miami his whole career, and then died from heart disease and had no prescription coverage for his 14 daily pills that cost him $930/month to take just so he could stay alive.

Why can't we offer the same coverage they get on "the hill" to the average American citizen? At least let us buy our prescriptions where we want to (Canada or USA).

Someone's getting rich…

Maybe we shouldn't let him get treatment. Why can he get care when thousands of us can't? That ain't right.

And to those of you who are surprised Cheney has a heart: he does indeed have a heart. The thing is, it's one of the smallest, coldest, blackest, hardest hearts ever to be in office.

The stage is now set. Look for "Big Dick" Cheney to resign in January of '08. A new, hand-picked neo-con will fill his office. In the summer of '08, the new V.P. will announce a run for election in Nov. '08. By ANY means necessary, HE WILL WIN! 8 more years of neo-con lunacy.

Cheney, if you need a new heart then, go back home to Wyoming and find a fresh cowpie or you can save the trip and use the old one in King George's head.

Just kidding Dick, if you want to get fixed on the cheap – go up to any one of your cops and start talking about freedom, liberty or saving the Constitution and the thug will be happy to taser you with 50,000 volts of fascism!

Never mind Dick that 280 innocent Americans have died from tasers since 2001 by your police-state. Feel lucky Dick?

Ron Nebraska   November 26th, 2007 8:40 pm ET

To be fair to the big Dick, it's entirely possible the disruption of blood to his brain during his 27 heartattacks could have changed him enough that his brand of insanity is not really his fault. It definately affected his shooting skills so what else has been altered in the man?

Pixie, Murfreesboro, TN   November 26th, 2007 8:35 pm ET

Irregular heart beat? Hmmm I would increase the virgin sacrifices if I were the dark lord Cheney.

I hope he gets better though. No matter how vile the human being is, he is still a person, so ugh…

Juan Jimenez, San Juan, PR   November 26th, 2007 8:25 pm ET

Don't be fooled. Just because it's a muscle and it twitches doesn't mean it's a heart. Remember what Bush's mom said when someone suggested her son has a brain. "He's not the brightest bulb in the marquee."

Tom Dedham, Mass   November 26th, 2007 8:03 pm ET

Time for the liberals to show how compassionate they are.

David , Massachusetts   November 26th, 2007 7:57 pm ET

I would imagine his Doctors will perform Syncronized Cardioversion on the VP. While routine it still has its risks, one being asystole (cardiac Arrest). Black hills if you had A-Fib and they sent you home with an asprin only you need to see another Doctor.

RTH, Bellingham, WA   November 26th, 2007 7:53 pm ET

JB: I'm glad you're watching – most of what liberals like me want is more people watching. Keep an eye on us, and keep an eye on this government. Freedom suffers when we get complacent or fearful, as it has under this administration, and as it did under FDR's executive order that established internment camps on US soil. Be vigilant. Argue. Listen. These are the bedrock of democracy.

In any event, I don't want Cheney dead. I do want him impeached and out of office.

John Pruitt, Roanoke, Virginia   November 26th, 2007 7:43 pm ET

Blayze Kohime, Columbus, OH   November 26th, 2007 7:34 pm ET

Anyway, I really hope he gets better, that's because I'm a liberal, I want everybody who's suffering to get better.

THAT IS MY STRENGTH, NOT MY WEAKNESS.

Zach, South Carolina   November 26th, 2007 7:25 pm ET

Leave it to the liberals to actually wish malice and poor health on an individual, much less a fellow American. It is quite the shame.

Greg, Memphis, TN   November 26th, 2007 6:38 pm ET

"Ah the compassionate liberals.. "

It has nothing to do with being liberal or conservative. People are expressing their disgust with Cheney & Co. for it's lack of compassion.

Actually, it is very compassionate and patriotic to recognize the greed, blood lust, hatred, incompetence, etc. of this evil administration. Even diehard Republicans are starting to figure this out.

"Remember we are all watching.."

You're probably talking about spying which is different.

Regardless, Americans are watching Cheney sympathizers, too, and we're tired of what we see. If the last election is any indication, there are more of us than you.

Peace someday.

I suppose it's too easy to kick someone when they're down, but that seems to be the way of HATERS, and the deconstructionists, not the way of someone who has the best interests of others in mind. Thank you America, now maybe you can understand why the rest of the world finds it so easy to mock us?

Next time when someone in your family has a serious health crisis, remember to make personally denigrating remarks about them. I hope for God's sake, it's not your father or mother you're trying to make points on with your immaturity and selfishly guided goals.

I doubt you would hear any politician making such foolhardy or reckless remarks. God forbid Hillary or Barack had the same fate befall on them, I'd like to see your positions then!

I predicted earlier this year that the Dick would step down as VP sometime in late 2007/early 2008, and Dubya would replace him with one of the GOP presidential candidates currently seeking the nomination.

The Dick would cite poor health as his reason for leaving, of course.

His replacement would get a boost towards election next November by saying he now has executive office experience and by claiming he valorously answered the call when the country was in need.

Giuliani been such an unabashed bush suck-up, I'm thinking he'll get the nod from his best bud, dubya. Or maybe McCain will be selected, as a sort of gesture of apology for dubya treating him so badly during the 2000 election.

This newest episode with the Dick's tiny, hard heart might well be the moment it all begins.

Personally, I could care less if you're watching. Like many of the other posters here, I share a sense of amazement that the individual on whom Mr. Burns of "The Simpsons" was based even has a heart to begin with.

"Black Hills, SD" raised a good point. How many of us regular folks would get that kind of procedure for a heart arrythmia if we were Cheney's age? Most insurance companies-the same folks who have him and his neocon Republican buddies in their back pockets-would probably refuse to pay for it.

Atlanta   November 26th, 2007 6:12 pm ET

I hope that VP Cheney turns out alright, I know his family would be devastated if anything happened to him, and the fact that so many people here moch his poor health makes my stomach churn. Liberals are so pathetic. They will truly never be happy until they are living under sharia law, and when that happens they won't be able to kill babies or have gay marraige anymore. sorry.

Full disclosure, I'm on the left and don't care for his politics whatsoever. In fact some of his comments and actions drive me up the wall. Doctors, after six year exploratory mission, have determined that, in fact, Vice President Cheney is human after all! He has a heart! And it's beating! (irregularly, but beating!)

Can you just smell Cheney stepping down and Bush putting in a 1-year Republican Vice President (Condi) who could later run for President?

The problem with their plan of Cheney stepping down in the 2nd term of Bush's administration is there is NO clear Republican front runner to install as a puppet Vice President!

By the way, I can't believe that CNN would post message wishing the VP to die, completely disgracefull!!!

mando, Houston, tx   November 26th, 2007 5:27 pm ET

He has a heart?

Adolph GrosseBite, Dallas   November 26th, 2007 5:25 pm ET

We might not see a single positive comment on this subject. Even the President doesn't like him! He might be the most hated individual on earth

Julie, Chicago IL   November 26th, 2007 5:25 pm ET

That's why we should not have old cooters for presidents and vice presidents..

Lee, Mays Landing NJ   November 26th, 2007 5:24 pm ET

Even reptiles, lizards have hearts.

J. Denver, CO   November 26th, 2007 5:24 pm ET

Gosh people i get he is not liked but some of these comments are sick! You wish something will go wrong? I don't care what he has done he does not deserve that….imagine if it was you or someone close to you and someone said that. Think of the pain and anger you would feel. I don't like him but i hope all is okay.

Jack Jacobs, Denver,CO   November 26th, 2007 5:23 pm ET

Ding Dong! The ……Oops!

A little early for the joyous news to be spread!

Must admit, we're most undeniably and reliably ready!

Scott, Cincinnati, OH   November 26th, 2007 5:20 pm ET

I hear waterboarding does wonders for heart problems. Tell the sob to give it a try.

E. Elliott, Orlando FL   November 26th, 2007 5:19 pm ET

He no more has a heart than the soul he sold for oil. It is more likely his liver ravaged from decades of untreated alcholism. The story is from his press office, when was the last time they told the truth about anything? I cannot remeber that long ago. Can any one remeber the last time?

Jeff Potter, Shelburne Falls, Mass.   November 26th, 2007 5:19 pm ET

The best part of this story was seeing the headline "Cheney having heart procedure" filed under "Ticker."

Brittan, Cheyenne, WY   November 26th, 2007 5:16 pm ET

I think his heartbeat is irregular, because he has not got one! Th procedure will probably get him one…What recently departed master of malfesance will be the donor? Hmm…could be interesting?!?!?!?!

LQ ROCHESTER MN   November 26th, 2007 5:14 pm ET

Me neither. When I saw the headline I thought he might be having a heart transplant.

Gary , CT   November 26th, 2007 5:13 pm ET

Lorenz, Is this some sort of curse? Watch out; what goes around, comes around.

Ossama, Houston   November 26th, 2007 5:11 pm ET

If only his heart could stop – I think he has done enough for the humanity and our planet. The future planned war with Iran might be avoided.

Lance, Beaverton, OR   November 26th, 2007 5:11 pm ET

*Insert some unoriginal variation of a Dick Cheney has a heart joke*

Good to know there are still compassionate people on the left.

trent porter, tx   November 26th, 2007 5:06 pm ET

Cheyney is the "Tin Man" in the wizard of Oz – always needs oil, but unfortunately never finds his dream of a real heart.

Is the battery in his pacemaker a DieHard?

Lumberjack, Lower Arkansas   November 26th, 2007 5:01 pm ET

Is he trying to grow a conscience? That must be what's causing the irregular heartbeat. Time to cut out the tumor.

John Poggendorf; Prescott, AZ   November 26th, 2007 5:00 pm ET

Root for the clot!

RB, from the bay state   November 26th, 2007 4:59 pm ET

The only irregular thing is the fact they even found one in his chest. Isn't medical technology wonderful?

Or is this the ploy we all suspected – Darth suddenly has to leave office for medical reasons and W gets to appoint a VP just in time for the '08 campaign.

utah   November 26th, 2007 4:59 pm ET

Cheney has a Heart?

Laura Tulsa OK   November 26th, 2007 4:58 pm ET

If you depend on the illness of another person to gain an advantage of your own political ideas, then God help you.

christian Good, Melville, NY   November 26th, 2007 4:57 pm ET

must be nice to have government health insurance for an old man's heart. now if only we can get our kids some…..

Janice, Victoria, TX   November 26th, 2007 4:57 pm ET

I'm thinking back to all the people in the high eschelons of White House administrations who have died in office amid scandal. Let's say that the many people posting comments get their wish. I predict that suddenly all blame for unconstitutional behavior will be laid on his grave like dead flowers. Case closed!

Charly Stoll   November 26th, 2007 4:57 pm ET

If there was ever a time for mal practice!

Bob, Scottville MI   November 26th, 2007 4:55 pm ET

I am a nurse. He has a pacer/defibrillator. That is what the pacer is for to keep a regular beat. His heart must be really screwed over big time for the pacer not to have corrected the a-fib. Could not have happened to a meaner bigger creep. He deserves everything coming to him and I think this may be it.

Don - Minnesota   November 26th, 2007 4:54 pm ET

Again…!?

James, Waterford MI   November 26th, 2007 4:54 pm ET

As a country of Americans and as a country of human beings, we and I wish him and his family nothing but the best!!!!

George W. Scherf, DC   November 26th, 2007 4:54 pm ET

I'm sure doctors could jump start his heart to regular rhythm if he found out he was about to be waterboarded.

Louis, San Francisco CA   November 26th, 2007 4:52 pm ET

Since when does Dick Cheney have a heart?

Linda Vaitkus, Quincy, MA   November 26th, 2007 4:52 pm ET

Cheney must have finally met Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt …

Mary Hughes, Phoenix, AZ   November 26th, 2007 4:51 pm ET

First, you have to HAVE a heart!

Wayne, Greenville TX   November 26th, 2007 4:51 pm ET

I wish Cheney well, however, why is it that Cheney always has a procedure done when something important is going on that should or does involve him.

Posted By Farrell, Houston, Tx : November 26, 2007 4:06 pm

I wonder how long it would take a wounded soldier to get similar care……

Brad Jones   November 26th, 2007 4:50 pm ET

Why should anyone, liberal or conservative, be concerned with Cheney's health? He is certainly not concerned that he has sent thousands to die and be injured in Iraq in a war based on lies.

DB, Virginia   November 26th, 2007 4:49 pm ET

Liberal or not, compassion for anyone in this administration is not possible! Especially Tricky Dick II… They themselves have no compassion for the people of America, nor the world. Its made clear by healthcare, war, and the overtaxing of the underclass and undertaxing of the upperclass AKA "low taxes for Americans"

Dick, I do not wish you well as you do not wish us well. But at least you have health insurance, must be nice.

Shannon shiflett, charlottesville, virginia   November 26th, 2007 4:47 pm ET

So this is what it means to be a compassionate conservative–you send get-well cards to war criminals.

Jean Hunter, Mesa, AZ.   November 26th, 2007 4:46 pm ET

what goes around, comes around, eh, Dick?

Carol, MD   November 26th, 2007 4:45 pm ET

He's off to see the Wizard.

D Wethers, Tampa FL   November 26th, 2007 4:45 pm ET

Oh, how good it must be to be a fat cat politician with that wonderful health insurance they have!

No wonder they could care less about us.

Ticker Shock, Richmond, VA   November 26th, 2007 4:45 pm ET

Why there must be some mistake. Mr. Cheney doesn't have a heart.

Anonymous   November 26th, 2007 4:44 pm ET

We can only hope….

Jon, Pittsburgh, PA   November 26th, 2007 4:44 pm ET

I do not agree with Cheney on anything and I believe he has done great damage to our nation but, these comments are disturbing. We are all Americans and we are entitled to disagree. But, to make comment that you wish something would happen to the VP is really awful. And those that make these comments publicly ought to be ashamed of themselves.

elmerg, Colorado Springs, Colorado   November 26th, 2007 4:43 pm ET

Heart? What heart?

Jim   November 26th, 2007 4:42 pm ET

Alex: what is the Vice Presidential line of succussion for 1000 please……

J Houston, TX   November 26th, 2007 4:42 pm ET

No malice in this just fact. When I have the same symtoms I am told to take an aspirin and relax to see if it gets better. My medical inurance has a 3000 dollar deductable and I am 12 dollars an hour. I work a job and a half to make ends meet. No malice just wondering what is wrong.

Yeah but your doctor didn't find an arrhythmia while using a basic stethoscope. Your deductable is a month's pay, and you can claim that entire deductible back from your federal income tax. If you need major treatment it sounds like you are well covered. If you want better insurance, pay a higher premium like the rest of us and buy fewer television sets and cheaper cars.

Raymond J. Ryan, Essex, Ct.   November 26th, 2007 4:42 pm ET

Could this be prelude to a resignation to avoid unpleasant questions ??

Wayne Messer, Orange Park FL   November 26th, 2007 4:42 pm ET

I wonder if he thinks of the many Iraq's murdered when he planned overthrowing a government.

Maybe he will get the friend he shot to apologize for a bad heart too.

"How i wish something will go wrong" Bad karma that. No matter how one feels about Cheney politically (and I'm no fan of his in that regard), one should not wish another ill health. It poisons one's mind and leads to amorality in the culture.

Jed in Texas   November 26th, 2007 4:40 pm ET

Darth gets a jump start as Bush continues reading "My Pet Quail".Lets hear some good news like "Cheney Impeached"!

Mike, Austin TX   November 26th, 2007 4:40 pm ET

Watch for the resignation and appointment of Rudy Guliani as Vice President.

Chris Pennington, Los Angeles, CA   November 26th, 2007 4:39 pm ET

I was JUST wondering where the old man has been. Dick Cheney's actions and decisions directly contributed to the tens of thousands dead Iraqi civilians, not to mention the thousands of American armed forces. History will not be kind to Dick.

gWb, Crawford, TX   November 26th, 2007 4:39 pm ET

250 volts should do the trick.

Jim Garrison, Evergreen, Colorado   November 26th, 2007 4:38 pm ET

While I don't wish him ill, if anything were to happen to him I'd spit on his grave, then dance in the mud.

Stefany, Madison WI   November 26th, 2007 4:32 pm ET

My husband just had this procedure done on Friday. It has a very low risk of complications. Even if someone is not a nice person or you don't agree with them, you shouldn't wish them ill. It will come back to you at some point because no one is perfect.

Malcolm, Portland, ME   November 26th, 2007 4:31 pm ET

This is more media bias trying to show the softer side of Cheney before the holiday season.

Cheney doesn't have a heart!

JoAnn   November 26th, 2007 4:29 pm ET

real nice, lorenz

Susan, Fort Pierce, Florida   November 26th, 2007 4:26 pm ET

The real news is that Cheney even has a heart! I am surprised that they even found one!

360View4u.co.uk   November 26th, 2007 4:25 pm ET

may be time to take little easy for the most influential vice president ever.

A Dem, Colts Neck, NJ   November 26th, 2007 4:24 pm ET

I'm sure they had to look long and hard just to find his heart. I didn't know that you can shock something so small.

Chris, Los Angeles, California   November 26th, 2007 4:24 pm ET

I think it's funny that this article is on the "ticker." Well done, CNN.

Bill, IA   November 26th, 2007 4:23 pm ET

His heartbeat probably isn't irregular…for Satan.

Russ Kailua Hawaii   November 26th, 2007 4:23 pm ET

I hope His heart is burning, just like our young Americans in Iraq.. WHERE IS OSAMA? Talk about a failed administration. They stated with the highest surplus now we have the highest debt. As long as Cheney's friends at Halliburton are doing well. He doesn't care about dead kids. I also hope things go wrong for this cold cold man.

Boyd Scheff, Huntington, NY   November 26th, 2007 4:23 pm ET

I'm quite surprised. I thought you had to have a heart in order to experience an irregular heartbeat.

nike2422   November 26th, 2007 4:23 pm ET

My step father had this same procedure done and dropped dead three days later. Of course you have to have a heart to shock for it to work.

John, Baltimore, MD   November 26th, 2007 4:21 pm ET

Thanks CNN…here come the shallow hate comments from liberals…how compassionate of them…hyprocrites.

Alejandro Silva, Scottsdale, AZ   November 26th, 2007 4:21 pm ET

It would be nice if it stops beating all together. Oh, wait. He's not a middle-class American, so his procedure should have no problem.

Dennis - Las Vegas   November 26th, 2007 4:21 pm ET

I believe they will use a bat to echo locate his heart, as they are astute at locating items in the pitch black darkness that is Cheney's innards.

Bob, Col   November 26th, 2007 4:20 pm ET

That's it. The time has come for him.

York Durden, Columbia SC   November 26th, 2007 4:19 pm ET

LOL. Doesnt take long for the so called "enlightend" "compasionate" people to wish death on someone. First post! Anyone that wishes something like that on a man and his family loses all credibility as being anything more than a hate filled, horrible person. Get a puppy, it'll make you feel better about life.

Step right up, folks, the show of the century is about to begin again! That's right, it's time for BDS on Parade! Anytime a Republican, conservative or just plain decent American has a health problem, the hate-tide rolls in again to befoul our intellectual shores.

God will not make them die so easily. Instead HE (GOD) shows us how these suckers dies (most worst) as a lesson for us (the next come) so that we do good. That's how GOD guide his slaves. But most of us knows not.

Alex, Washington DC   November 26th, 2007 4:09 pm ET

That's just mean-spirited. He needs to survive in order to stand trial before the International War Crimes Tribunal.

Bonny Zaleski, Redding, CT   November 26th, 2007 4:08 pm ET

How can a man without a heart have so many problems? Look at what his deals on oil have done to the heart of America…No pity here….

David, Santa Rosa , CA   November 26th, 2007 4:08 pm ET

How can one undergo a heart procedure when this tyrant obviously has no heart? Maybe this "change of heart" will help awaken him to all of the suffering he has caused. Just goes to show that no matter how much money you pilfer thru acts of aggression, it still can't buy your health.

p.h,. Riverton ,Wy   November 26th, 2007 4:07 pm ET

One can only hope and pray. With any luck we will never hear from him again.

Scott from Freehold   November 26th, 2007 3:55 pm ET

What makes this news is that doctors actually heard a heartbeat at all. Cheney's positions suggest a lack of one.

John, Boston, MA   November 26th, 2007 3:54 pm ET

I am such an ignorant fool. I did not know Cheney had a heart.

Dave, Cincinnati OH   November 26th, 2007 3:54 pm ET

Death could not come soon enough!

Sue Saginaw Michigan   November 26th, 2007 3:54 pm ET

Sorry, but that is an inappropriate comment by Lorenz. Everyone is entitled to their personal opinion, but he is the VP of the United States and it is wrong to wish such a thing on anyone, and his office deserves respect, even if you don't like the man. I don't like the man at all, nor his politics. But I do wish him well, and good health.

Tom, Flagstaff AZ   November 26th, 2007 3:53 pm ET

Tom, AlBUQUERQUE, NM   November 26th, 2007 3:52 pm ET

What a surprise, It is difficult to believe that the old fart still has a heart. I am sure the calculated deaths of hundred of thousands of iraqis are weighing heavily on his heart.
