The war of words between Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama has intensified in recent days.

(CNN) — Just a couple of weeks ago, Sen. Hillary Clinton said she wasn't interested in attacking her opponents — she was interested in "tackling the problems of America."

But with her lead slipping, things have changed, and the New York senator has found herself in a full out verbal war with Sen. Barack Obama.

"In politics, you can afford to ignore your opponents until you start to feel them breathing down your neck," said CNN's senior political analyst Bill Schneider.

Newsflash! She's always been attacking her rivals, it's just that they;ve let it go by. Now that they are 'answering back' it all appears she's JUST STARTING to attack. Before she was doing it in her sneaky underhanded way, or letting Bill do the attacking for her.

pam Eugene, OR   November 28th, 2007 1:50 pm ET

If you think back Hillary started all this several months ago when she called Obama naive and inexperienced. She then echoed him on the same issues she called on.
She has been on the attack all along. She plays hardball and cheating come naturally to her.As she drops in the polls and Obama climbs higher you will get see the real Hillary. It will get a lot worse because she is feeling vunerable to Obama. You better duck because s**t will hit the fan as thre are no limits to her dirty tricks.
I hope you get to read this because CNN obviosly does not like what I have to say. Both my other posts were deleted.

Hillary is just showing her true colors. She Wanted illegal undocumented workers to have licenses- then she flipped and didn't want them. She wanted a national healthcare for all Americans - now says she wants an "affordable" healthcare. She says she didn't want "Republican-style mudslinging" - but she's the one slinging the self-proclaimed "republican-style" mud. Will the real Hillary please stand up? Oh - and remember guys, she's also the same person who hired Sandy "the burglar" Berger, you know - the Top Secret documents "in-the-sock" smuggler. See the precedence here folks.Let's start new- let's start fresh, Americans deserve it! Barack/Edwards or Edwards/Obama '08 -either way the American people win!

Moose, Anchorage, Alaska   November 28th, 2007 10:28 am ET

People in Nevada were impressed with Hillary’s last CNN debate performance. The Research 2000 poll of Nov 19 shows that Hillary has 25 points ahead of Obama, when its March 9 poll only shows Hillary 12 points ahead.

Polls after polls say Hillary can be trusted over Obama in handling the Iraq war. In late September, when The Post and ABC News asked Democrats nationally whom they trusted most on the war, Obama trailed Clinton by 30 points. Even among Democrats who support an immediate withdrawal, he trailed her by more than 25 points, in a recent Pew poll. That's true in the early primary states, as well. In New Hampshire, for instance, according to the Los Angeles Times, likely Democratic primary voters who say they want U.S. troops out of Iraq "as soon as possible" choose Clinton over Obama by more than 2 to 1.

Joe, Florida   November 28th, 2007 10:24 am ET

People, please notice how it will all boil down to Clinton and Obama, the 2008 President and Vice President - elect.

We can expect Edwards to leave the race shortly after the primaries.

Clinton/Obama will be the Democratic ticket and it will win the election

Julius, Philadelphia   November 28th, 2007 9:28 am ET

I find it amazing that when Obama criticizes Hillary's policies it is considered "attacking" but when she does it, it is "to make clear distinctions" - what a hypocrit.

Go Obama!!

Salita, SC   November 28th, 2007 9:07 am ET

Funny Obama is not telling us anything we havent already heard before. Nor is he telling us about a NEW way to do it.

Mike, Fredericksburg VA   November 28th, 2007 8:45 am ET

Shock and dismay abound with Democrats.
Did any one actually believe that Hillary would not attack a fellow Democrat? Hillary is the one that said she'd do whatever it takes to win. Hillary is not going to get my vote because she is smart (I would contend that she is smarter than Bill), aggressive, and determined, but because she has no integrity and no ethics.

Joe, Florida   November 28th, 2007 8:01 am ET

Do not forget my friends:

Clinton/Obama will be the Democratic and winning ticket, Guilliani will be overwhelmed.

Steve, Portland, OR   November 28th, 2007 4:24 am ET

Who cares who started what. We need answers of all kinds as we here in the the US are talking about playing catchup in a lot of areas. We need someone who can think outside the box as they say and I'm sorry I don't see Hillary doing this. I actually like Edwards trashing Hillary and seeing Obama move up as people actually hear who they are interested in putting in the White House. In one case, because she is related to Bill Clinton. Please no more repeats, we are sick of the same old business as usual from either party.

Jake, San Diego CA   November 28th, 2007 3:24 am ET

It's not a surprise, just another lie from Hillary's campaign. Can she not stick with any of her positions.

How long will it take for you Hillary supporters to see that she's lying to you and will say anything to get into the white house. Do you really believe she'll fulfill any of her campaign promises? I don't.

She can't even handle the heat against a democratic rival, she would fall apart against the GOP when all the focus is on her, and she might have to actually give answers to questions.

All you'll hear from her is it's Bush's fault, it's the GOP's fault, so it's time to vote Democrat and I'm the Democrat.

One problem with that Hillary, you voted with the Republicans, you have voted with Bush multiple times, she is no different than the GOP, the only difference between Hillary and Bush is that Hillary is a Socialist and can speak the English language.

A Voter in N.Y.   November 28th, 2007 3:19 am ET

Tevin, Raleigh, NC your right on the money. Clinton has no real experience despite what she says. Like most things she says are distortions of the truth.
her health care plan, like the last one is nothing more than socialization.
She apparently didn't like the fact that Obama is educating people that Hillary will fine you if you don't comply with her grand scheme.
her last health care plan failed miserably because the penalties for not doing it her way were far to harsh. Actually talking about felonies for those who didn't follow her rules.

Talk about big brother, she would be big sister and make no mistake, she will make you pay for that "free" health care that you MUST have.

Hillary knows best for all of us, she has the experience, she will do what is best for you even if you don't want it.
This woman stands for everything that is not about democracy.

Anyone but Hillary '08

Ken, San Diego, CA   November 28th, 2007 2:56 am ET

Don't believe all these silly newspaper headlines: "It's getting nasty…", "the gloves are off…", etc., etc.

Obama and Clinton have (yet) to lobe "personal" attacks on one another; we've seen snipy responses to experience and agendas and policy. So far, points and counterpoints on both sides have been pretty much on point.

In addition, Edwards WAS throwing mud at Hillary Clinton. Edwards attack did not attack Hillary's ideology or agenda, but rather her character and integrity; that is political mudslinger (to which Democrats ought not to attack Democrats in that fashion).

However, it is perfectly legitimate for Hillary to question Obama's experience (frankly, I think the junior senator from Illinois doesn't know what he's getting himself into…3 years as a senator?? come on now…) AND it is perfectly legitimate for Obama to question Hillary's experience. It is fair for Hillary to question Obama's health care plan; it is fair for Obama to question Hillary's health care plan.

In other words, this is a fair conversation. It will get snipping on the campaign trail (as these candidates are under tremendous pressure). For our part, we ought to just sit back and listen (and be mindful NOT to let the media distract what is really happening).

janel, St. Paul, MN   November 28th, 2007 1:17 am ET

I find it amusing and somewhat disconcerting that Hillary feels she is being attacked by the Obama campaign. Quite the contrary.

A couple or more months ago, she was very condescending at a debate when she scoffed at Obama stating he would meet with our adversaries, calling him "naive." Several weeks later, she talked about how she would meet with our enemies. She didn't recognize that when Obama first suggested this theory, he was very clear that diplomatic efforts would need to be conducted before he would do so.

I have found Ms. Clinton very patronizing when she attacks Senator Obama's experience, yet talks about all her experiences, which consists of being the wife of a president who disappointed many Americans because of his junior-high-like behavior as a man.

Unlike Clinton, Obama will bring change — much needed change — to America. Certainly he lacks some experience, but he has a great mind, much integrity and a love for our country and he will be a tremendous ambassador to countries that have lost their admiration for our great country.

Ken, NY   November 28th, 2007 1:05 am ET

Birds of a feather flock together. The quality of one's supporters/followers is indicative of the candidate himself.
By looking at the noting but negative
personal attacks from Sen.Obama's supporters,I have to wonder,is that what Sen.Obama all about ?

Due to having to raise millions of cash
to run for office, until we have Public
financing and free media exposure we
are subject to bush-clinton-bush-clinton.

Could Americans be so sheepish to allow
two families rule for 25yrs. Well Hill
didn't read the NIE 2002 report and
still voted for king dummy to go into
Iraq. Not to mention the fox noise
guru murdock hosted a Fundraiser for

So much for all her talk about no personal attacks. If she is going to be a hypocrite it would be nice if she could wait a little longer so that I could forget what she said and not realize what a huge hypocrite she really is.

AJ, Chicago IL   November 28th, 2007 12:15 am ET

Hillary finds herself in a real battle for the democratic nomination and starts no only attacking Obama on some issues but mostly personal. When Obama said about 5 months ago that he would meet with leaders such as the Iranian President without pre-conditions in his first year as President, Clinton called him "naive" and then latter tried to imply she would do this as well.

Obama has never attacked Hillary. Obama only defends himself against Hillary. Obama draws distinctions between his beliefs and policies versus Hillary's. Obama's claim about his strongest foreign relations experience comes from living abroad should have been left alone. But Hillary went on the attack, chastising Obama childhood experience as irrelevant, and at the same time touting her visits to other countries as first lady as foreign relations experience. Hillary please! Hillary's problem is not Obama it is her own vagueness, poor judgement and "flip-flopping" on the issues. The Clinton Campaign see Obama as a problem, not in terms of personal attacks but because all the negatives that Hillary has Obama has the opposite. For example, Hillary is too polarizing, Obama is not. Hillary is not seen as trustworthy, Obama is.
You get the point!

Obama in '08!

This should be a contest of ideas and ideals. It doesn't surprise me that Hill and Obama not having any executive experience, fall back on clawing at each other about —- what is it they're discussing?

Jose Card   November 27th, 2007 10:46 pm ET

Why can't Bill release the White House documents now? Exchange of nasty words won't get Hillary elected, but hard evidence of her claimed experience will.

What is Bill waiting for? This is her last chance. After this, it will be downhill fast.

Justin, Kansas City MO   November 27th, 2007 10:38 pm ET

This is politics, and getting confrontational with your opponent is as natural as George Bush ignoring our nation's laws. Hillary and Obama will slug it out until there's a clear winner; nothing wrong or unusual about that.

sk, houston, tx   November 27th, 2007 10:32 pm ET

Although, Hilary Clinton sounds and looks good, and one can think of Bill Clinton's back for her. I don't think she will be able to lead the country and world in many issues. Because, I have the fear, She might be like Nancy Pelocy, although backed by majority unable to do anything important jobs. (administrating the issues or passing the resolutions)

tina, NY, NY   November 27th, 2007 10:04 pm ET

It is really sad to see that Obama started this very nasty tactic in hunger to win the nomination and will never be a president in the case he wins nomination. Now Hillary has started to anser back. I makes whole democrat look like buck kids. Do we really need this.

Senator Clinton is not being honest.

Release your financial records like Obama has done. Again getting Vilsack's endorsement in Iowa and then paying him $400,000 is much, much worse than anything she is acusing him of. Her goal is to bring Obama's negatives up to hers. That's not going to happen. The truth actually matters, that is what Obama is trying to teach us.

Laura - Tulsa OK   November 27th, 2007 8:30 pm ET

Tevin in Raleigh NC typifies the liberal bent. Sorry to single you out but your post is full of vague claims and calls for "change". Doesn't experience matter then?

Name two things Clinton or Obama have done other than spend more taxpayer money for "entitlement" programs. Just name two things that show leadership - NOT just spending Congressional money…

J. McKinney SW MO   November 27th, 2007 7:21 pm ET

I can't believe the people who are criticizing Hillary for "going negative". She was attacked for literally WEEKS by Obama and Edwards (a lot of it untrue, but people believing it) while she ran a clean campaign of what she wants to accomplish. But there comes a time when she had to return some of the fire, and let people know that some of the stuff being said about her wasn't true. She finally had to defend herself, in spite of the fact she (and she alone) was trying to run a good campaign. Hang in there, Hillary. We are behind you!!

jj,newton,Iowa   November 27th, 2007 7:20 pm ET

I think Hillary is getting desperate. This race will turn like Kenneday, Carter race. Just wait and see the outcome. Kenneday must have been convinced people will vote him due to his brother presidency. I can not wait to see Hillary holding Obama's hand high asking us to join her to back Obama as our candidate! He is not perfect but people like him than Hill and her Bill.

Steve Larson, San Antonio, TX   November 27th, 2007 7:20 pm ET

Mrs. Clinton, Mr. Obama and all the rest should should stick to stating their own positions and allow the others to do the same. We'll see in the staged debates where they disagree and the ignorant masses can decide for themselves which is the most favorable liar to vote for.

Hillary is a capable woman and a strong candidate, and would have a decent presidency.

That being said, she is as much of a Washington insider as one can be. Barack Obama may not have her experience, but he has been an elected official longer than she has, and his ideas are profoundly good. At a recent foreign policy forum, he showed a great and thorough understanding of world issues and gave solid solutions to our most extreme international problems. I am resolute in my belief that he is ready for the presidency and will usher in a new era in American politics.

Hillary will win the nomination even without shutting up Obama. However, Obama's unfounded rumours against her may hurt Hillary in her next general election in particular, and hurt the democrat party in general. Obama deserves to be ridiculed in public as he probably gets used to it by now by disclosing his past indiscretions.

Nita - SA   November 27th, 2007 6:11 pm ET

Karen, NYC   November 27th, 2007 6:04 pm ET

tired of corruption LV   November 27th, 2007 5:59 pm ET

There is nothing wrong with opponents in this race pointing out their differences on policy issues. After all, they are competing against one another and not against Bush or any other repub at this time.

What's happening now is that the media and Hillary's camp did not expect anyone strong enough to question her capabilities, judgement, and experience rhetoric. They all, including Hillary, thought she would just waltz into the whitehouse unopposed. And then along came Barack.

But it seems as though the Clintons, instead of focusing on issues which Hillary has a difficult time with, have stooped to the typical slime tactics with which they are so familiar. The Novak debacle is a good example.

…I'm moving to Australia if Hillary becomes president. Wait until the news about the law firm she worked for and it's ties to the Communnist Party and the Black Panther movement in the 70's. Of course that's nothing compared to the documented fact that Hillary was in charge of all "spying" activities of other candidates for Bill when he ran for office.

Mary, des moines, iowa   November 27th, 2007 5:44 pm ET

It is about time that Hillary should punch back Obama, to stop his rumours, to identify his wishy washy policies, and to expose his political naviety & inexperience.

Hillary shall show her political experience and strength is this fight, and she shalll win.

Hanna,andover,ma   November 27th, 2007 5:44 pm ET

Lady, I don't this these are attacks. All what he has doing is asking to tell American your outline of your plans and stop being vague and dodging truth. If you want to flash around expecting voters to come around and vote for you, personally can not comprehend that. It is just funny to think how much truth you need to tell us about your previous work and how little you are telling us. You are putting things so general and basically telling Americans to go figure. Not the current generation. I think Americans are more educated today to do that. If not, wise up people….

Shirley Fisher   November 27th, 2007 5:43 pm ET

turn to another channel.

Tyler, Cincinnati, OH   November 27th, 2007 5:43 pm ET

The good people at CNN need to get a life. There is nothing nasty about these interactions between the two campaigns. They are just marking there differences. Citizens of the U.S. don't let the media jackals fool you into this so called nasty fight. Its not nasty, it is called disagreeing. Stop focusing on how things are being said and start focusing on content of what is being said.

And I don't understand the whole love affair this Nation has with the Bushes and Clintons. Has it proved good for us, ever?

Tevin, Raleigh, NC   November 27th, 2007 5:42 pm ET

When Edwards points out his differences with Hill, doesn't she call that mudslinging? Or, was she just conveniently labeling it as mudslinging because she wasn't expecting anyone to challenge her? Pointing out your difference with another candidate is not mudslinging. I just want to know when Hillary changed her mind on this!

Tevin, Raleigh, NC   November 27th, 2007 5:36 pm ET

Hill is getting scared! She thought no one would challenge her claimed "experience". She definately doesn't have the longest resume of the contenders, so it's stupid to focus on this so called "experience". It's an insult to the intelligence of Americans! Even Obama will admit to not having the longest resume on the stage! And he's been an elected official longer than Hill! His background has better prepared him for this moment in history! What's more important than time spent in Washington is judgement and character. Most people will admit that Hillary seems to lack honesty, so I don't understand how anyone can consider her as President! She has right to fear Obama, he is change! She fears change!

Joshua, Hammond, Louisiana   November 27th, 2007 5:31 pm ET

It's funny how Clinton has backed out on her word multiple times, yet some Americans still consider her as "our" next President. Politics are like sports, in the sense that, you play how you practice, and the way Clinton "pracices" is not how I want her to lead our country.

EE   November 27th, 2007 5:30 pm ET

I have to be honest here. Im feeling frightened that Senator Clinton is going to lose this election to Mr Obama.

She has gone completely negative while the "Obama" we doubted very strongly has proven beyond measure that he can lead America. I cant wait to see history in the making.

Almost evetone wants to identify himself with his campaign in Iowa and NH. Whites, blacks, Latinos, Asians americans, women, young, old, wow! unbelieavable Obama.

And news from the so called South seems to show they want to vote for his guy. Some say he isnt black, some say his mother was white so he's one of them, all kinds of reasons why they are changing their deep seated bias.

Lets watch history here!

Wow!

Mike   November 27th, 2007 5:29 pm ET

Shame on Hillary for going negative. She's been running her campaign on nothing - no platform.

Obama is offering a new way of doing things and has marked some clear distinctions between him and the former first lady. I trust him and believe he can get things done in Washington, not Hillary who is way too divisive.

Hilary called it mudslinging when she was being criticized by her Democratic peers.

STOP THIS RIDICULOUS ATTACKING ON OPPONENETS AND MAKING UP STAFF UP. ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT MATTER TO US..

John, Des Moines, IA   November 27th, 2007 5:16 pm ET

Now, their both starting to make me mad. If they keep this up, I will not be voting for either of them. The democrats need to stop attacking each other. Just campaign on what you believe. There is no need to even mention another campaign, just tell the voters what you stand for. No need to differentiate yourself with another candidate–let the voters do that. Just stop attacking each other, or whoever wins the nomination (if it is even one of these two) will be damaged and likely lose in the general election. As if they don't already have electability issues. Sometimes I wonder why I am a Democrat and support Democratic candidates like these.

A new general election poll from California will at least bring good news to both Clinton and Obama, as they both run very well against All Republicans!

Don't be surprised if Hillary gets 3rd in Iowa. That sure would be a downer to her campaign…

Common Sense   November 27th, 2007 5:04 pm ET

I'm Sooooooo Shocked! How could she stoop so low? Oh wait…. Hillary Clinton was Flip Flopping? I thought you said Hillary Duff. Few. My angel is safe. Who cares about what Clinton is saying, she is was and always will be a lying, flip flopping, government pawn, always trying to manipulate the situation to get her way. I want to see her pout and cry and stamp around when she loses the democratic nomination. I think America will actually spite her. I'm hoping at least, that would be hilarious. seriously though, this woman is evil, and you see how desperate she is already with her lead shrinking? wait until the ship is sinking, then the real slime will begin to oooze from behind that mask and you will see the real desperate despot she is emerge.

Stew, Fairfax, VA   November 27th, 2007 5:02 pm ET

I knew the "nasty" would come out of this woman when the going got tougher. Dee Dee Myers didn't describe her as a "Scary Woman" for nothing! Come on, Hillary let's see the real you!

manny james marietta ga   November 27th, 2007 5:01 pm ET
