(CNN) - Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, while answering a question about cutting government programs to save money, gave his reason for getting rid of the IRS.

"Most of the people in this country are more afraid of an audit than they are of a mugging, and there's a reason why."

The former governor supports a "fair tax" program, which taxes people based on their consumption, or spending habits, and includes rebates for people on the poverty line, according to his platform.

While answering the same question, he also promised to revamp the Department of Homeland Security, which he said is "a mess."

Too bad that the two candidates who want to abolish the IRS (Paul and Huckabee) probably won't make it past the primaries. The idea of cutting all federal taxes and getting to keep what we earn, then hiking the sales tax (installing a nat'l sales tax) makes sense. It would get people who earn "underground" income such as drug dealrs to pay into the fed. revenue system.

Getting rid of the irs is a long overdue projectIts such a lion nobody wants to tackle it. American workers never no what surprise will be at the end of the year. Refund or pay. I agree that homeland security is a mess. Its too late to shut the door once the terrorists are here. They could put some arsenic in candy from China that sells at WalMart & kill a bunch of innocent kids.

CNN's Levy doesn't have Huckabee's FairTax quite right; EVERYONE gets a rebate in that system, not just the poor. That's what makes it fair.
