why do so many people think the civil war was about freeing the slaves? it was about states rights and self government. freeing the slaves was an after thought that happened several years into the war. even the northerners didn't really care much about the issue until the blacks left the south and arrived in north.truth be known, the yanks didn't take too kindly to having a former slave being called their equal.but then again, history is written by the victors.

"That flag should never be flown over any government building in this country.

Ignoring the racism claim, it's the flag of a treasonous lot. It's not part of my history, it's part of the history of Southern Treason!"

That's absolutely false. The United States of America are supposed to be a VOLUNTARY UNION of INDIVIDUAL STATES. The southern states did not commit treason; they merely chose to leave the Union. Common sense tells me that if you can join the Union, you should be free to leave the Union.

Abraham Lincoln had no business conquering and occupying an independent nation. The southern nation did NOTHING that warranted being conquered.

And anyway, if Jefferson Davis and other southerners are guilty of treason against the Union (as you say), wouldn't General George Washington be guilty of treason against the British Empire?

"the people of our country have decided not to fly the flag" Mr. Romney obviously knows little about "the people of our country". Those of us who have Confederate ancestors are proud of that flag because the brave soldiers who fought under it were. It never ceases to amaze me how uneducated so many educated people are. Is he against the U.S. flag, because it flew over more slaves than the battle
flag ever did. The north had slaves as well; New Jersey was the last state to free their slaves. The people who won the War wrote the history books and got every one to believe that the main reason for the war was slavery. It was about State'sRights and the heavy, unjust taxation the Federal Government imposed on the Southern states. Slavery was an abomination, but it was a part of that past that I hope no one is proud of. If you have questions, do some research; you can find the "real history" that some are trying to rewrite. Benny Watt Terry

I would fly the Confederate Flag at the White House if I were president. On the moon if I went there. If you don't like the flag, don't buy one. Otherwise leave it alone.

Anyone who honors the confederate flag and considers it "their flag" is NO better than a terrorist. No better than the piece of garbage suicide bombers on 9/11. My question is, why don't people like that just have a huge party in the middle of the desert & blow THEMSELVES up? That would solve some hate issues now wouldn't it? ABOLISH HATE, in fact. If you hate Americans, if you hate black people or spanish people or white people for that matter--YOU'RE ALL THE SAME! Worthless people who are so weak & pathetic that you resort to hating other people who are most likely BETTER than you. HATE is the problem in this world. Guess what? Nobody likes YOU either!!! Get over racism & flying that "loser" flag from a gazillion years ago. YOU are NOT an American!!!!!!!!!!! So much for a melting pot when white people can't get over themselves!!!!!! I AM A WHITE--just in case any KKK members have something they'd like to say to me!!!

Paul Bergeron--

1: Whenever I used a word like "ludicrous" or "obtuse" this was either before or after an explanation of why.
2: That being said, you seem to have dropped several points. Given the declarations of secession I cited, do you concede the point that the primary motivator for the formation of the CSA was, in fact, the continuation of slavery?
3: Just because I'm of British birth and my family is British does not mean that I'm going to default my own opinion to the opinions of some of history's great Britons. Authority is not an argument.
4: So do you genuinely think the South was correct to rebel? Would the world be a better place if the USA was now divided? When do you think they would have gotten around to ending slavery on their own?
5: So now the Union Jack is offensive? Is the flag of every nation on earth offensive, then, as the US flag and the British flag are? I draw the line rather differently, and say that the flags of groups that rebel against a nation, causing horrific warfare, and cite crimes against humanity as their primary motivation for doing so, should not later fly in that nation's public square. Individuals can do what they like, though it'd be nice if they didn't.

Steve from Landing, NJ:

At least we agree on one thing, the US flag must not fly over Parliament. You may want to read "When in the Course of Human Events" by Charles Adams (Rowman and Littlefield, 2000) and learn what your fellow Britons Charles Dickens and Lord Acton thought of the 1861-1865 war. Or you might consider this poem entitled "A REPLY TO THE CONQUERED BANNER" by Sir Henry Houghton, Bart. (1809-1885)

Gallant nation, foiled by numbers!
Say not that your hopes are fled;
Keep that glorious flag which slumbers,
One day to avenge your dead.
Keep it, widowed, sonless mothers!
Keep it, sisters, mourning brothers!
Furl it now, but keep it still--
Think not that its work is done.
Keep it till your children take it,
Once again to hall and make it,
All their sires have bled and fought for;
All their noble hearts have sought for--
Bled and fought for all alone!
All alone! ay, shame the story!
Millions here deplore the stain;
Shame, alas! for England's glory,
Freedom called, and called in vain!
Furl that banner, sadly, slowly,
Treat it gently, for 'tis holy;
Till that day--yes, furl it sadly;
Then once more unfurl it gladly--
Conquered banner! keep it still!

Responses such as "Bizarre", "Obtuse" and "ludicrous" do not make arguments; such is the position of "might makes right." And the Union Jack is offensive. Take it down.

I could certainly see why one would believe the US flag represented treason against the crown. I've actually never been utterly convinced that the US revolution was actually as right, necessary, or heroic as anyone here says (I'm British by birth, and so less inclined to buy automatically into the US side of things). However, the US Flag is not flying over Parliament, and if it were, I would advocate for its removal.

It is well known that many of the founding fathers, Jefferson among them, advocated the freeing of slaves, but compromised on the issue in an effort to (you guessed it) convince the South to join them in the war effort and, later, the Constitution. It would be frankly bizarre to say that the US was founded in order to perpetuate slavery, whereas the Confederacy clearly was.

And bringing up the Louisiana Ordinance of Secession is obtuse in the extreme. The Ordinance merely states the fact of secession, it in no way delves into the reasons for it. Only four states released documents doing so at the time, and each of them lists slavery, three of them at least as the primary motivator.

As for Southerners taking down the only symbol that "uniquely represents them", your comparison is ludicrous. There is no "flag of the North". There's only the flag representing a united nation, with fifty stars and thirteen stripes for every state and every original colony, or the flag that represents the division of the country. The latter does not belong.

The Louisiana Ordinance of Secession does not mention slavery. But fine, your flag represents treason against the Crown. In fact, the Royal Governor of Virginia offered emancipation for slaves who supported the British government. "How is it," asked London's famous author, Samuel Johnson, "that we hear the loudest yelps for liberty among the drivers of negroes?" Today the names of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and other "Founding Fathers" have been removed from the schools in New Orleans. Your flag is offensive too. If you demand that Southerners remove the only symbol that uniquely represents them, take yours down too.

It grieves me to see my southern heritage tossed aside by men such as Thompson and Romney concerning the Confederate battle flag. The flag in itself was not a National flag but a flag that represented the common southern soldier. After skirmishes soldiers would scribe into its cloth their battle honors to remember friends and family members who were killed by a senseless war of northern aggression. Thompson and Romney refer to the battle flag as being a symbol of slavery, yet slavery was a way of life under the U.S. flag for over 100 years before the Confederate battle flag was even created and remained a vital institution in 5 northern occupied states through out the entire war. Have Thompson and Romney forgotten that slaves were owned by Washington, Jefferson, Grant and even Lincoln’s family, none of which carried the Stars and Stripes. If the flag represented slavery then why did it take the U.S. government another 100 years to free the slaves? The civil rights came about in the 1960 didn’t it?

First, I never said the flag shouldn't be flown because it's a symbol of racism. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I said that it shouldn't be flown by the US government because it's a symbol of opposition to the US government.

Second, there is an enormous difference between the symbol of a country or organization that did bad things and the symbol of a country or organization that was formed specifically for the purpose of doing bad things. German flag? AOK. Nazi flag? Bad.

The US does nasty, evil things sometimes, I certainly don't deny that. But what is your point, exactly? The US shouldn't fly its own flag? People should write off the country they live in and condemn it rather than caring about it and working to make it better? Unlike the CSA, the USA is here and it was founded on some genuinely good ideas. Read the Declaration of Independence some time, then compare it to the Declaration of the Causes of Secession. Which of these documents is worth waving a flag over?

Funny, because the four states that wrote explanation of secession and the vice president of the CSA all thought slavery *was* the reason for the war. Funny how they were all wrong! Glad you explained it for those of us who weren't paying attention.

well now,....

racisim, hatred, slavery all bad words

anyone dare to think that THE US Flag flew over this country for what?... 100 years while slavery was below it

what does a confederate flag have ANYthing to do with
protecting our borders, jobs back in America, you know things that matter
am I wrong or does something that happened
147 years ago more important than real issuses of today?

PS by the way it was a battle flag-- and by the way
the "slave" issue wasn't what the war was about and by the way that slave card came out in Lincoln's term years after the war started- and caused riots in the streets of New York because it was a draft hijinx
and by the way what does that have to do with anyone living today?

history is amazing thing when you actually pay attention to it
I hope the history of electing the right president unfolds

Ron Paul anyone?

The question was an excellent question, reflecting the ongoing culture war in this society.

Steve from NJ, you may oppose the display of the Southern flag in your belief that it represents racism, but your flag represents lethal violence used to achieve social change--against Native Americans, Mexicans, Southerners, Spaniards, and in this century, mostly the unborn. Your flag is offensive too. You won't understand this unless you have a conscience.

With all these history buffs making their point on the Civil War and Confederacy lets not forget the Act of March 9, 1906 (P.L. 38, 59th Cong., Chap. 631), authorizing the furnishing of headstones for the graves of Confederates who died. Right, the US Government provides headstones to those
who fought in the Confederacy.

And what does all this have to do with the Presidentail debate? You tell me?

For all the people that say that the North won and the South lost....

No one won that war. How can any side be a winning side when a war happens on our own soil with our own fathers and sons fighting against each other. We all lost. North and South.

To consider it a prideful statement to say that the North won is to be a war-monger. Call yourself a Yankee; call yourself a Rebel: YOU ARE ALL STILL AMERICANS OF MANY COLORS. Get over it.

When I see the condfederate flag my quick initial reaction is that it is a symbol of racism and hatred. Then on further reflection I understand that it is also a symbol of Southern heritage before it was manipulated into what the symbol stands for today. The fact is while it is a symbol of southern heritage, majority of people see it as a symbol of hatred today. For example, you would not see someone putting up flags of swastikas in public places, although the swastikas were a symbol of peace by buddhists and hindus before Hitler manipulated it into his image. So shouldn't the same apply to the confederate flag?

To D. Williams of Katy, TX, who so courageously wrote, "THE CONFEDERATE FLAG WAS THE FLAG OF THE SOUTH. FLOWN BY ALL OF THE PEOPLE WHO WHERE PROUD TO BE FROM THE SOUTHERN STATES. IT WAS A FLAG OF PRIDE".

Someone please remind D. Williams that FALSE PRIDE falls on the Seven Deadly Sins.

Someone please remind Christopher of Chicago that the idea of the Seven Deadly Sins came from Dante's Inferno and Divine Comedy, books written as pieces of fiction and that were never canonized as scripture. They are opinion pieces, as is his writing. But remember, people, what opinions are like: minds. Some are right, some are definitely wrong, everyone has one (or more), yet all are valuable. We're a democracy, in theory. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion(s), therefore let's respect the voice of everyone and stop with this irritable sniping and actually start discussing facts, rather than trying to prove who has the loudest voice and can say the most controversial thing.

So many people rip CNN on how it picked mostly the front runners for Q&As, and gave the 2nd/3rd tiers runners little time and silly questions. Does Ron Paul deserves more time and substance? Well, so does Kucinich. Not fair? sure, what is? Is having only two parties fair? A system that virtually promises an independent little chance of Success fair? Is Walmart fair to the mom/pop stores? Is Starbuck fair to all the artsy-fartsy coffee shops? Is our country of "Do it our way or the highway" foreign policies fair?

My point is, it has NEVER been fair! The bullies mostly win, thats why we have feel-good movies to compensate our needs to "feel" fair!

The point is: Do you think that you just woke up one day and thought that having an SUV is a must? or that going green is the right thing to do? No, you didnt know what to think until the great American marketing machine bombarded you with certain images days in and days out, and made you think taht it was your ideas to start out with! Yeah, there you go "trend-setters"!

So, do we EVER have an independent view on anything? You can, but you better do you homework. In our world of "give me the info pronto, sum it up for me in a minute, will ya!" culture, you can bet most voters vote based on an impression rather than facts and substances. How do you think we got Jr. Bushie and that we in this Iraq mess to begin with? Rest asured, the 4th wing of govt is stronger than you think!

S.C. should be ashame for still flying flying the Confederate flag on the grounds of the state capital.

The Confederate flag represents division, and hatred of the USA.

Confederate flag lovers need to get over it. There will never be a Confederate States of America. The Union won the war. Let in go.

The Confederate flag can be symbol of racism but it can be a symbol of death of soldiers who died in battle under the flag.
I had lots of relatives that died in the Civil war on both sides. I think it is ok for the confederate flag to be displayed in Cemeteries if and only if the relatives want it displayed to honored their kindred dead but otherwise the flag has no business being displayed
on public property.

I am a proud Southerner and am not ashamed of the fact. I am descended from several Confederate soldiers. They belonged to what was know as the Confederate States of America (CSA). I'm sure that at least some of them thought they were doing what they had to do and what made sense to them at the time. However, this is the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, nothing but it. Remember history, honor the dead Confederate soldiers at appropriate times and places. Since this is no longer the CSA, there should be no debate - take the flag down.

If the South had won the civil war, would slavery still exist today?...hopefully not! How anyone can cherish such "history" and "heritage" exemplifies why slavery existed. As for bravery on the battlefield by southern ancestors fighting to maintain slavery, then anyone fighting on the side of cruelty and injustice can be considered "brave"...including nazis. How many non-white southerners respect this "heritage" and "history" of slavery, 89 years of Jim Crow laws, and segregation? ..."Whites Only", "Black People To Back of BUS", "Bathrooms For Whites Only", "Universities For Whites Only", "Movie Seating For Whites Only" I wonder what confederate flag supporters from South Carolina felt after they learned about Strom Thurmond's love child...with a black woman! YEEEEEEE HAAAAAA!!!!!!!

The bottom line is that the Confederate flag is anti-American. It represents a political entity that sought to separate itself from the United States. Confederate soldiers did not die for the United States, they died for the Confederacy, and by extension, for the right of Southerners to own slaves. They may have been honorable men, but so have many men who took up arms against the United States. However, we would never tolerate the banners of such combatants to fly alongside Old Glory.

Unless CNN and Anderson wanted to damage certain Canidates with such a DUMB question with certain southern voters, why put on that question. shows how CNN will try any thing to support the Democrats. That is not an important issue and does not have anything to do with running our great country.

States rights was a cover for the real issue of slavery, not vice versa. How else do you explain the fact that the confederate states demanded that Northern states be forced to obey the *federal law* that required them to return freed slaves to their owners?

As an African American I naturally find the flag offensive. As a plain old American, I find it doubly offensive. This flag represented a group of people that basically said if we don't like what the government is doing, we have to the right to not be a part of this nation any longer. That's a pathetic history to want to honor.

Why couldn't the candidates have just said that is a symbol and a symbol is what you make of it. That is the point of symbols, they have meaning to those who give it meaning. If your Great Great Grandfather served the south well then its family history. If they came over from Europe after the fact like mine did it doesn't mean much to you. If your ancestors were slaves then to you its a symbol of slavery (not racism slavery is much worse then racism. Just like murder is much worse then assault and battery).
If your point is to offend people with it then its a symbol of hatred but if your point is to offend no one and honor your ancestors with it, or your a civil war buff. Then it is not a symbol of hatred for you.

Its just a symbol. There is no greater truth in a couple yards of cloth. Sometimes it just doesn't have an intrinsic value.

That flag should never be flown over any government building in this country.

Ignoring the racism claim, it's the flag of a treasonous lot. It's not part of my history, it's part of the history of Southern Treason!

Several posters have intimated that they know the “true” cause of the “War Between the States,” and that those who choose to study the matter will learn that slavery had little or nothing to do with it. Well I have studied the matter, and there is a virtual mountain of evidence to support the argument that the perpetuation of slavery was the prime motivation behind the secession of the southern states that directly led to the war. This is not political correctness, or a liberal attempt to rewrite history; it is plain and simple fact.and anyone who attempts to assert the primacy of some other factor as a cause for the war is ignoring the 800 lb. gorilla in the room.

No, really, the Confederacy was about slavery. Sure, there were other complicating factors, but it was. The idea that the confederate states seceded because of noble ideas about the rights of people to stand up to tyranny is a flagrant falsity, made up after the fact to try and justify the war. Look up the term "Lost Cause of the Confederacy" some time. The noble cause of secession is a romantic myth. The South seceded first and foremost because they wanted to keep their slaves, that's all there is to it.

Poor Mitt doesn't even know what it is; his ancestors weren't in the USA back then. Frankly, if the Klan would stop flying it at cross burnings and the hick mayors would stop buying it out of tax money, no one would care any more.

Seriously, it's become a racist symbol even if it wasn't intended as one. The former Confederates are now the most loyal Americans, so it isn't being flown as a sign of insurgency. It should never be bought with public money, or flown at a public area unless it's a cemetery, and the same goes for THUG LIFE t-shirts.

Ah, the good old Confederate Battle Flag! It's the proud emblem of descendants of poor and working men who proudly fought and died in a rich man's war for the right to be sharecroppers and other sorts of white trash. I've never understood some of my fellow (white) Southerner's obsession and yearning for a time of a privileged, landed gentry that held them in total disdain and exploited their labor.

I find it utterly cowardly what they said and what other people here have been saying, that we should capitulate to those who insist on the Confederate flag being condemned as a symbol of racism. That view is WRONG. It should not be embraced nor pandered to or validated. The acceptance of it is nothing but cowardice. The flag to me represents standing up against government tyranny and against the notion that NY has the right to tell SC to do just because they said so, and a noble people who stood for defending the concept of free and sovereign people rather than subservient to some collective overmind. The people of the Confederacy actually believed that the government should work in their interests and not abandon them for rhetoric and special interests. Sound familiar? Basically the very power of the people to revolt when the government became hungry for power purely because of its own sake was exercised, and sadly, it lost. If we bury the flag, then it becomes a total failure. To me it stands for refusing to be a sheep. Everyone would do well to learn that, and don't you dare attempt to brand that as evil.

If you can fly your Battleflag because your grandpappy was a loser in the War Between the States, then anyone should be able to fly the swastika if their grandpappy was a loser in WW2. Hell, we should all fly the Union Jack, because THAT is this country's heritage. Retards...

The Confederate Flag has no place in public domains (or personal domains in my opinion). There is only one true flag that we should fly, and that is the American Flag, to symbolize our unity as a nation. States that fly their own state flags is more for state pride reasons. The state flag of SC has a Palmetto on it, not an X with stars (aka Confederate flag). For us to be discussing publicly displaying this divisive and racist flag in the 20th century is beyond me. Re-enactments and confederate cementaries are one place that can fly the Confederate flag, but no other public places should even want to fly this flag.
