Will the Boston Red Sox ace help McCain with die-hard Sox fans in New Hampshire?

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Pitcher Curt Schilling will hit the campaign trail in New Hampshire this week on behalf of Republican John McCain, the Boston Red Sox ace's first foray into the 2008 presidential race.

Schilling, who will appear alongside McCain Wednesday for a "Politics & Sports Town Hall" in Manchester, is no stranger to presidential politics. In 2004, he campaigned for President Bush against hometown Democratic Sen. John Kerry.

The Boston pitcher first announced he was supporting McCain back in January, and reaffirmed his commitment to the Arizona senator last month.

"I'm not voting party line any more," Schilling told Boston radio station WEEI. "I'm voting for the guy that I know is going to be the same person four years from now that he was when elected. I need to trust somebody because I don't agree with anybody's platform front to back.... I need somebody that I can trust to do right by the country and stick to their guns."

Meanwhile, the American League East rival New York Yankees have been opening their wallets for lifelong fan Rudy Giuliani – the former New York mayor has nabbed donations from several members of the organization, including owner George Steinbrenner and third baseman Alex Rodriguez.

yep, almost as surprising as Hollywood millionaires backing democrats.

Tom Dedham, Mass   December 4th, 2007 9:13 am ET

Even as a Red Sox fan and a Conservative, I don't care what this baseball player thinks.

He can have his opinion of course, but I don't care, as long as he beats the Yankees and we continue the mini-dynasty.

john troach, san francisco, ca   December 3rd, 2007 9:01 pm ET

thank god people like george clueney and p. diddy dont support the people that i want in the white house.
also, when we went to war in the 1st place, did any of the dems not vote for the war? which means on issues that really count, we cannnot trust them in my mind. why bc the dems will say anything to get into office,

ne,pa.   December 3rd, 2007 8:49 pm ET

He was a big Bush supporter so no surprise he's backing McCain who's really another Bush.

Mimi, Newton MA   December 3rd, 2007 8:49 pm ET

Schilling's simply proving the long standing theory: a conservative / republican is either a moron, an evil, or both. Now, we could discuss which one of the three Schilling really is.... but who cares?

RB, from the bay state   December 3rd, 2007 7:57 pm ET

Curt who? Oh yeah, that Curt.

McCain will strike out, Schilling or not..............

Independent in IA   December 3rd, 2007 7:56 pm ET

So much for my support of the Red Sox....NOT.....Now we're going to ruin sports along with everything else.....

ed winter park fl   December 3rd, 2007 7:53 pm ET

don't let a couple of world series wins go to your head. 2championships in eighty four years doesn't qualify you for any thing .you were not so great before the red sox and new england is democratic territory, so you being a Mccain supporter won't do much for either.

HISTORY REPEATS   December 3rd, 2007 7:21 pm ET

well hey he campaigned for bush against kerry. and bush did a bang up job right?? i wouldnt take his advice before i go to the voting booth but hey there are alot of followers out there....

Joe, Flagstaff, AZ   December 3rd, 2007 6:28 pm ET

...and yet one more reason to hate the Red Sox.

Henry Miller, Cary, NC   December 3rd, 2007 6:27 pm ET

One of the biggest bits of idiocy of political campaigns is paying any attention at all to the political views of various people solely because they're "famous." Is this baseball player noted for his expertise in economics? Foreign affairs? Defense? Anything else that makes his opinion more valuable than that of any other American?

Do your own thinking, people! Support John McCain, or not, because you've gone to the effort of understanding, yourself, his views, not because someone you may have heard of says you should or should not.

Make up your own minds, America! Think for yourselves!

Rick, Chicago Illinois   December 3rd, 2007 6:24 pm ET

Curt never was very bright.

But his bulb is getting dimmer and dimmer.

james,austin,tx   December 3rd, 2007 6:18 pm ET

Tim, Atlanta GA

Is George Soros not rich enough for you, what about Oprah, does she have any money, cant remember? A liberal democrat crying about a republican...........how surprising!

Matt, Cleveland OH   December 3rd, 2007 5:43 pm ET

Santosh you just don't get it: Hollywood supports the right candidates and is therefore allowed to express their mindless drivel.

(drips with sarcasm...)

THOMAS BILLIS las vegas nv   December 3rd, 2007 5:18 pm ET

Curt Schilling looks healthy.I am sure they could use him over in Iraq as a grenade thrower.Easy to be for these war guys when you are making millions of dollars and work six mos. of the year.

yours truly   December 3rd, 2007 5:11 pm ET

I'm a moderate republican. McCain is one republican I can support. Huckabee might be another. Giuliani= makes Bill Clinton look like a choir boy – I will not spend the next year listening about how the republicans reviled Bill Clinton and then nominated Rudy Giuliani with all his personal troubles. Romney=flip-flop. Thompson=?

I can't tolerate Clinton winning this. Republicans should consider learning about Obama and making sure he and not Hillary is the nominee. The reason is that the republican is probably not going to be president this time around. Please let's not let Clinton be the democratic nominee.

I know Karl Rove is promising that if Clinton is the nominee, we will defeat her. I'm not willing to take that risk. Vote Obama in the democratic primary rather than in the republican primary.

Ryan Schiling, Pittsburgh, PA   December 3rd, 2007 5:01 pm ET

Tomorrow, even if Tiger Woods or Payton Manning endorses McCain, his days are numbered. When he stops supporting Bush's failed strategy on Iraq, he will then have some hope. Or else, he will be considered as Bush's poodle.

Alice, Seattle, WA   December 3rd, 2007 5:00 pm ET

"Multi-millionaires backing republicans…. how surprising!"

+++++++++++++++++++

You mean like Soros? Oh, I'm sorry, he's a BILLIONAIRE, isn't he?

Grace,boston,ma   December 3rd, 2007 4:54 pm ET

I remember schilling backing Bush and getting an invitation to the white house. Who care about schilling anymore leave alone Bush!

S, Orlando, FL   December 3rd, 2007 4:36 pm ET

This clown also thought Bush was the best person for the job. Enough said.

Bill, Commack, New York   December 3rd, 2007 4:28 pm ET

Wow – does anyone really giving a flying goose about who Curt Schilling endorses?

summus   December 3rd, 2007 4:17 pm ET

I thought Republicans hated these celebrity endorsements from "stars".

Lee, Mays Landing New Jersey   December 3rd, 2007 4:16 pm ET

Schilling always loved the far right wing, even when he was just a plain millionaire here in Philadelphia, before he became a multi-millionaire. I'm just surprised he's not backing Tancredo or someone more xenophobic but perhaps he's looking at a more realistic prospect.

bukky, Baltimore MD   December 3rd, 2007 4:16 pm ET

Is'nt anybody gonna say WHO CARES

Also this douche campaign for Bush in his 2nd run... you didn't know he was a lying, blabbering idiot by then? Really? You're gonna blame it on voting the party line and not holding on to does tax cuts for you and your team mates. Shut up already

Brennan   December 3rd, 2007 4:11 pm ET

who cares?

Santosh   December 3rd, 2007 4:07 pm ET

The biggest multi-millionaires (Hollywood) all back Democrats so nothing wrong with the sports stars supporting Republicans.

Jessie Phoenix AZ   December 3rd, 2007 4:05 pm ET

Another Celebutard telling us who we should vote for. He Curt shut up and play the game.

Betty,portsmouth,NH   December 3rd, 2007 4:02 pm ET

And that is real News. How low is CNN bending! Mccain is war monger and fear monger and nobody is voting for him.

Tim, Atlanta GA   December 3rd, 2007 3:55 pm ET

Multi-millionaires backing republicans.... how surprising!
