Watch CNN's Candy Crowley report on the three state weekend trip for Obama and Winfrey.

(CNN)–Democrat Barack Obama is banking on some star power this weekend. Actually, make that "super-star" power. The Queen of Daytime TV herself..Oprah Winfrey..will appear with Illinois Senator Barack Obama in three key states over the weekend.

Although I admire Oprah for her career and good works, I hope that her appearances with Obama this weekend will not translate into votes for Obama by people who are really only just Oprah fans.

Lyn Gibbs, Miramar, Florida   December 8th, 2007 8:50 am ET

Obama, having Oprah campaining presents a
"rock star" show business event and mars the importance and seriousness of the campaign

Jo NH   December 8th, 2007 9:05 am ET

ALERT IOWANS!!! Obama will be playing with Oprah and missing once again another important senate vote, like your energy bill. Obama has also been ducking votes on abortion and Iran!!! Seeking a trillion-dollar tax hike and raising the retirement age for Social Security!!!! If he will not support you, DO NOT VOTE FOR OBAMA! Notice once again how obama is trying to keep attention on oprah and not his record or the fact that he’s missing very important senate votes one after another!, like the Energy vote for Iowa, he will be playing with Oprah that day too! So Iowans don’t expect him to vote for you! Why would you vote for him??? Obama is sleazy and dishonest, he's banking that TV viewers can be fooled into the perception that a vote for him is a vote for Oprah! It’s DISGUSTING!! I hope he loses big in IOWA!

Jeff, Columbus OH   December 8th, 2007 9:15 am ET

this business of using celebrity influence to garner political support makes me ill.

Michael James - Illinois   December 8th, 2007 9:20 am ET

There is nothing wrong with Oprah getting involved. I think it's great that Oprah is willing to appear on the campaign trail with Barack Obama. The fact that she has not made her views public as part of past campaigns just helps to illustrate that Obama is different.

People who normally don't participate in politics may find themselves at an Obama rally thanks to her. Once they are there, Obama's message will resonate with them like it has for so many others.

Enough of the drama - vote for Obama!

Charlie, Dumfries, VA   December 8th, 2007 9:50 am ET

Jo NH,

There is no vote on Saturday. Obama voted on Friday for the measure, as did the other candidates in the Senate. Unfortunately, the vote on cloture fell short of the 60 required, and the next effort looks like it is on Monday. Please refrain from smearing the campaign until you know the facts.

Jessica M., El Paso, TX   December 8th, 2007 9:56 am ET

I really don't care who Oprah endorses, but it doesn't seem right that one person can have such power as to change the outcome of the presidential election. I find it especially alarming since Obama is not qualified to be president.

Anson Ang Williamsburg, KY 40769   December 8th, 2007 10:05 am ET

Hey Hill-Billy,

8 years of you is enough, DONT BE GREEDY LIKE THE BUSHES!!! Why dont you just BACK OFF AND GET LOST. I m tired of Hillary's look, she has gotten SO OLD since 2000. You got NO MATCH with those models from Victoria Secret. Hey Hill, why dont you just go back and keep an eye on Billy? Perhaps you can do a makeover so that Billy will stop his "Outsourcing Policy" HOPEFULLY. Anyway Hill-Billy, why dont you just go back to Arkansas and stay there for good. Come on, give other people the chance.

Sarju Atchison, Kansas   December 8th, 2007 10:17 am ET

To Jeff, what is the difference between having all of the endoresements as you guys talk about all of the time, is it not to influence voters? I guess Oprah endorsing Obama is like Clarke endorsing Clinton except that she turns her`s to a vote.

Jay, Ames Iowa   December 8th, 2007 10:38 am ET

Instead of a book of a month–now we have the president of the month. I'm not anti-obama but the oprah thing makes me ill. She treats the whole world as victim–to be saved by her new age nonsense.

Paul, Syracuse, New York   December 8th, 2007 10:42 am ET

I believe that Barack Obama is not a good candidate, because he can not win the vote from people unless he uses the star power of Oprah to get them for him.
Oprah is over rated.

Pete, Chicago Illinois   December 8th, 2007 11:33 am ET

I think It's sad that Oprah is helping this man based only on his skin color.

Alex, San Francisco, California   December 8th, 2007 12:08 pm ET

This "Oprah-bama" circus is probably going to backfire for Obama. It shows that he's getting desperate at the last minute, and that Oprah too is getting desperate for her candidate. Only hard-core, well-informed, and politically savvy people go to caucus or vote in primaries, and they're not going to let anyone besides themselves cast their choice for them (especially a celebrity).

Eyzwidopn, LA, CA   December 8th, 2007 12:09 pm ET

Oprah is supporting Obama because he's the most inspirational candidate (which is usually the first thing she looks for before endorsing anything/anyone), and because she believes that he can effectuate real, positive change in Washington unlike any other candidate running. And for those of you who believe that Obama can't win because of the tired, ill-conceived arguments that he's not experienced enough or tough enough, do the math. Obama has more elected years in office than HRC and more practical years working in the community at a grassroots level on issues affecting everyday Americans. His stated aggressive policies towards terrorism along with his forward-thinking diplomacy approach were once ridiculed and then embraced by foreign policy experts, military officials and candidates alike (if you know how to "google" and read, do some research). Considering Obama's weathered HRC's petty, below-the-belt and comical attacks on him with flying colors, I think it's safe to say that he's more than capable of withstanding any right-wing Republican shots. Here's the bottomline that folks should be focusing on. Can HRC get elected with her high negatives? Yes, but it won't be with a 50+1 majority but more than likely something closer to a 46-43 edge at best. With that kind of deficient win, HRC will not be able to govern or lead effectively because of the animous and distrust she generates from those "red states" and the other side of the isle that will bog down the legislative process in even nastier partisanship. That's why Obama's maturity, intelligence, vision, and skills as a proven leader, coupled with his broader appeal over HRC and lack of combustible "political baggage," will allow him to do just as he says as President of the United States… bring both sides of the aisle and independents together to address and find solutions for the vital issues facing our country.

Maria, Houston   December 8th, 2007 12:15 pm ET

Hillary Clinton is a prototype of a political gold digger. Clinton campaign is well known for twisting arms, lying, scheming, calculating and shamelessly manipulating public opinion. Hillary even polled voters in Iowa to see how Streisand's endorsement plays out, haha.

In light of that this fake "outrage" of the Clinton camp about Oprah and Obama is pathetic. Jealous? Get tickets…

TR , Cripple Creek, CO   December 8th, 2007 12:17 pm ET

Oprah-Obama, yes put her name first, she is the tv star. The is not for the daytime emmys, this is for president of the United States of America, the highest office in the land. The whole thing disgusting.

Jeff, Columbus OH   December 8th, 2007 12:33 pm ET

to sarju,

i guess what i'm saying is that a celebrity endorsment for a politician is no different than when a cereal company places a picture of a celebrity on their box of cereal to get people to buy their product. it's just a sleazy psychological trick.

i do appreciate your views, though, and i realize that they might be different than mine.

Eli, Canada   December 8th, 2007 12:43 pm ET

I knew the United States was a consumerist society. Now I can see its just a sort of entertainment society.. avid for news, gossip, celebrities, etc. Where is the polemics that should be part of a political campaign? When a campaign becomes a movement that attracts the masses with demagogic slogans and 'the arena', you may end up with followers not with rational voters.

William   December 8th, 2007 12:47 pm ET

We, the people of the United State, should united and show the world that we should not let a talk-show host, who no surprise supports the talker instead of a doer and a leader, to decide the election for us. it is anti-democracy! It will back fire on Obama!!

Alex, Atlanta Georgia   December 8th, 2007 12:50 pm ET

I have nothing personally against Oprah, but she should not be using her power as a talk show host to try to campaign for Barack. That isn't right in my thoughts. I know she can do what she wants to, but its just not right. I mean you don't see Larry King, S. Colbert, or Jon Stwert openly indorsing a candidate.

George,Md   December 8th, 2007 1:15 pm ET

Yes, don't let Bihill stop way. I would do anything within my power too to get there. Go Obama, we love you….

jj,Newton,Iowa   December 8th, 2007 1:19 pm ET

This will translate to Obama winning general election with landslide if not anything…..Good for him…we still love him down here. He started small and I am happy to see where he is right now….

Ken   December 8th, 2007 1:26 pm ET

Why are people jealous of Oprah? She gave voice to Holocaust survivors, Built homes in New Orleans after Katrina, Built a school in South Africa and has supported countless charities across the globe. She's influential among women not because she's a celebrity, but because they trust her judgment because of her honesty and integrity. She's a woman of goodwill who has always highlighted issues that all women care about, ranging from breast cancer, to single motherhood, divorce, rape, abuse among others. No negativity towards her, can distorts Oprah's legacy. My wife loves her because Oprah doesn't endorse anything until she has done her due diligence.

Dave, Atlanta, GA   December 8th, 2007 1:29 pm ET

If Mike Huckabee can tout Chuck Norris, and say "Vote for me because my wife is good with a grenade launcher" , if Hillary can go around saying she is the most qualified to be president because she was Bill Clinton's wife, then Obama can certainly make campaign appearances with Oprah Winfrey.

fredwashington   December 8th, 2007 1:38 pm ET

Oprah please leave this decision to the poeple. By trying to sway votes you are undermining the process please go hide in your hole… if this guy wins the dems lose.. the repubs will eat him for brkfst lunch and dinner..i dont like hillary but she will beat the repubs shame on you oprah

S Alexander   December 8th, 2007 1:51 pm ET

I admire Oprah tremendously. BUT she has in the past regretted supporting individuals.
Im most concerned that she is supporting one who is an outstanding speaker but lacks the experience to be our next President.
He is so liked BECAUSE he has not been in politics long enough to have a record.
Most all we know about Hillary is what the press/media has told us.
It's time we watch and listen and judge for ourselves, rather than listen and trust what the media, press and Oprah tell us.

Chris, Middletown, CT   December 8th, 2007 1:53 pm ET

you might want to try paying attention, from cnn's own political ticker,

Senate Energy Bill fails in bid for a final vote

WASHINGTON (CNN) — An effort to require better mileage from U.S. cars and trucks failed in its bid for a full Senate vote Friday morning, 53 to 42.

Opponents of the measure, which passed the House Thursday, had threatened to filibuster the bill, and its supporters could not muster the 60 votes required to bring it to a full vote.

The bill, which was opposed by President Bush, would have ended some tax loopholes for the oil industry and used those funds to extend tax credits for renewable energy sources.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, had said earlier that he would require the four Senate Democrats currently on the presidential campaign trail to return to Washington if the bill came up for a full vote this weekend.

Phil, Evans, Georgia   December 8th, 2007 1:58 pm ET

Thats great that oprah is out!!!!We need more stars to take stands on who they support. This will allow those who do not participate in politics to see its importance.Celebrities are human, tax-payers and Americans too, so they need to participate in the human race!!!

Sheryl, Teaneck, NJ   December 8th, 2007 2:31 pm ET

When Bill Clinton, does a speech for Hilary, everyone says he will bring the Black vote. So what is so terribly wrong with Oprah stumping for Obama. This is an election,if you do not understand this then you need not read any further. During an election, people who like or share your ideology endorse you. They speak up for you. They tell the world about you. This is not revolutionary. This is a time honored tradition. She likes him, she will vote for him. Hopefully this translates into more Black and women votes. Get over it or get the heck out of the way.

Independent in IA   December 8th, 2007 2:31 pm ET

Hmmmmm….odd headline, which somehow implies (correctly, I might add) that misguided voters will be casting their ballots for Oprah-Obama…exactly WHO is running here? Osama Obama? Oprah Windbag? Neither of them can win.

Voting4Change   December 8th, 2007 2:58 pm ET

The JEALOUS, CLOSET-RACIST Liberals et. al need to put an end to the bigotry that has reared it's ugly head around Oprah's foray into politics during this cycle.

The haters are just dismayed that Oprah has decided to through her support behind someone that SHE believes can make substantive and fundamental change to our government, which most people in America believe needs a real overhaul. The country needs to heal and the status quo just won't do. We've seen what that has produced…

It's PATHETIC that folks in this great land of opportunity, THE Unites States of America, still can't stand to see certain people get a fair and honest hearing without looking to first cast aspersions or resort to the "race card."

Many of these same folks spewing much of this vitriol would be the first ones to say "I'm not racist, I have black friends etc., etc. I'm just making a point." WHATEVER! For some reason the truth just has a way to make some folks get extremely defensive.

Let Oprah endorse the person she wants. Chuck Norris is supporting Huck, Curt Schilling is supporting McCain, Streisand's on board with Clinton, etc.

The problem here is that the ICON of daytime television happens to be a trusted, and admired woman of color that transcends race. Certain people just HATE the fact that she's chosen to support someone that just happens to be a very educated, selfless, inspiring person of color as well.

Some people in America wonder why race is still an issue…look no further than the blogoshpere where people can reveal their true colors without fear of reprisal. SAD and PATHETIC!

Wake up people and let's move to heal our country's divide and restore our position in the global community.

John, Houston, Texas   December 8th, 2007 3:08 pm ET

Judging from the comments of other writers, there is much concern that Oprah could undermine the political process.

It is highly unlikely.

Oprah may energize some fence-walkers to either become involved or make them more likely to vote and if so, that is good.

But it's just like dealing with the members of a jury. The lawyers sometimes forget and underestimate the fact that jurors are quite capable of making up their own minds.

So it goes with voters of all political persuasions.

THIS IS NOT THE ACADEMY OR EMMY AWARDS EVENT. HEY, FOLKS OUT THERE- THIS IS SERIOUS BUSINESS. YOU CAN LIKE OPRAH, BUT THAT SHOULD NOT TRANSLATE INTO A VOTE OF OBAMA UNLESS YOU BELIEVE HE WILL BE THE BEST CANDIDATE FOR THE PRESIDENCY. HILARY IS A MATURE, ARTICULATE, SMART (DOMESTIC/AND FOREIGN POLICY)….NOT TOO OLD/NOT TOO YOUNG- JUST RIGHT- LIFE EXPERIENCES- COMES WISDOM- OBAMA IS NOT READY FOR THESE TROUBLED TIMES. WATCH OUT!!! HILLARY'S GONNA BLOW!!!!!!! waste of time for oprah ,, big deal over nothing,, A few more years of experience and Obama would have a legitamate shot at it,, the mans a great speaker he makes people sit up and listen but lacks any real resume in crucial catagories,, he should work on this and run in say 4 to 8 years down the road. I do apreciate how he makes hillary crazy though, she will need Al Gores shrink before this is all over.

Schratboy, Boulder CO   December 8th, 2007 3:22 pm ET

Oprah sells whatever earns her more riches. She's nothing more than a consumer-friendly version of Lucifer, selling crap to people and telling them how it will enrich their lives.

Rob, Phoenix, AZ   December 8th, 2007 3:51 pm ET

Oprah will have a negative effect on male voters. Why isn't this being discussed in the media? When will the media begin to scrutinize Obama the way that they do other candidates particularly Clinton. Obama was practically begged by the media to go negative against Clinton months ago. But when Clinton decides to go even just a little negative the press calls her desperate or worse. Go figure. I will never support Obama even if he is the nominee. The Clintons deserve a little more respect from the other democratics in the race.

Eyzwidopn, LA,CA   December 8th, 2007 4:33 pm ET

Why would anyone question Oprah's motives or her right to endorse whomever she pleases and not apply the same questions to why Babara Streisand is endorsing HRC? Did Oprah endorse Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton when they made their presidential runs? Does Oprah only endorse Black writers, doctors, "Dr. Phil's," dieticians, etc.? She endorses who or what inspires her and obviously Obama happens to do that with his message of hope, change and his passion to make a positive difference on behalf on the American people.

No matter what anyone says, it is true that Obama gets a free pass on his experience. No one yet has gone back to look at his background other than to say he is half black and half white and he offers HOPE. I heard the same things from Bush and look were we are now.

What about not keeping his State Senate records. Sounds fishy, yet, no one in the media has looked into that. What about the church he belonged to that says support blacks above all else. If this were a white church with the same standard, all hell would break loose in the media.

I do feel the media is not doing a fair assessment of Barack Obama as a person running for President. The man misses 80% of the U.S. Senate votes. He votes 'present' in the State Senate. He is a slick politician and has convinced folks who are not really looking at his record that he can make America great again. He is all show and Oprah will not be successful in convincing the majority of America that Obama is the agent of change. He hasn't done anything from what I have read except run as a Community Activist. PLEASE!!!

Now if that isn't no(n)sense double-talk Hill-Speak, then I don't know what is…..

And believe it or not, there ARE folks out there in the electorate, who actually would put someone who talks like this, in the Oval Office.

I have always been a Democrat, but if SHE's the nominee, I may be looking elsewhere.

Its NOT that she is female (my doctor and vet are both females). She is simply not qualified to make the Changes we need here in the US. Unless of course you believe that talking out of both sides of her mouth is a qualification…

The only remote advantage I can see for HER being Pres, is to make sure that the liberals regain control of the Supreme Court.

Conservatism is lost cause, but like Racism and the rampant use of guns in our society, it still rears its ugly head now and then.

We -certainly- need to stamp out the conservatives, but NOT with Hillary. Edwards, Obama, Biden, or Richardson… Yes.

Hillary NOT…

I see many reasons why Obama and Oprah are both unsuited for leadership. The campaigning that Oprama is doing is telling people that they've been victimized and that government will change that. Nowhere in their campaigning do you hear praise for the men and women of our military; the soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, coasties - those are the real heroes of the US - not a talk show host and a charismatic politician. I resent that Barack refuses to wear a flag pin and I'm going to tell all of my family who are involved in vererans' organizations that he won't wear a little flag; Barack also will not put his hand over his heart when the 'STAR SPANGLED BANNER' plays. Not that I had much love for Oprah or Obama before this , but they've gone down a notch after the flag/patriotism thing; and the fact that Oprah refuses to have other candidates with views that oppose hers and Obama's tells me she's into control /domination and using her "Super Star power" to squash the average person's viewpoint.

p.s. While Obama and the Democrats are claiming climate change is also a big government issue, did Oprah fly to these places in her private jet or did she use commercial airlines?

I honestly think Oprah is in a life long search for someone or something she loves as much as herself!!! Give it up, you will never find it Oprah!!! As far as Barbara Steisand, she doesn't have the celebrity pull that this talk show host has. It WRONG to use her popularity to cloud the real political issues.. remember our countries leadership is on the line here, not who is more popular or charismatic!
Oh and Oprah… who paid for those famous Pontiacs that you supposedly gave away and did took credit for, I hear they were donated by GM and the poor audiance was left with a tax bill. All for YOU to look good, yeah typical take credit while other are left to suffer the aftermath… hey reminds me of an election….

I saw this on another post from — Posted By Jeffim, Miami, Fl : December 8, 2007 11:44 pm. Jeff speaks about how Oprah once thought the war in Iraq was a good thing and tried to sell her audience on the war.

youtube Oprah supports war http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqVtRJeXxXM. The title is Oprah Winfrey's Contribution to the Rush to Iraq War.

When I saw this I was surprised. All weekend long Oprah claimed Obama has such good judgement for being against the war in Iraq from the beginning. Apparently, Oprah has questionable judgement as well if this is her criteria. She at one time agreed that the Iraq War was needed as much of us did when we thought there were WMD. Stop throwing stones at Hillary when you live in a glass house yourself.

Operah's support for Obama is an emotional one and completly one sided. This rash move of her's will cost her everything. Now people will really come to know who this one sided person is, who based her support for Obama, just because she can relate to him emotionally. We need people to make their decision on facts and truth. I'm glad she is showimg her true self to the world unknowingly.

I heard that when Obama was swoken in the senate that he refuses to put his hand on a bible, instead a Koran was used…is there any truth to that?
