Poet Maya Angelou is the star of a new radio ad for Hillary Clinton.
WASHINGTON (CNN) - On the heels of media mogul Oprah Winfrey's high profile Sunday visit to the crucial primary state of South Carolina for Democrat Barack Obama, rival Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign is launching a new radio ad there featuring noted African American poet and Winfrey pal Maya Angelou.
Angelou, who first announced she was backing the New York senator's presidential bid earlier this year, calls Clinton a "strong woman and a protector of families," in the 60-second spot running on stations across the Palmetto State.
"Each generation of African Americans stands on the shoulders of those who came before," Angelou also says in the ad. "Today, the challenges facing us threaten the dreams we have had for our children. We need a president with the experience and strength to meet those challenges."
The ad comes in the wake of Winfrey's wildly popular tour of early-voting states with Obama over the weekend. The pair drew the biggest turnout in South Carolina, where African Americans make up more than 50 percent of Democratic primary voters.
While Clinton once held a double digit lead in South Carolina, a Mason-Dixon poll released Sunday seems to show Clinton beating the Illinois senator by only 3 percentage points, 28 percent to 25 percent.

One should check into whether the Hilliary campaign PAID for this endorsement. I am sure that Obama did NOT pay Oprah.
For all who think Oprah is supporting Obama only because he is black, does that opinion apply to Maya Angelou supporting Hillary and thus making her a sexist? P.S. I have great respect for Ms. Angelou! Could it be people are supporting candidates they believe will make the best leader? Which is it or do you want to have it both ways?
hahahahaha what a joke!!! How much did she charge you Clinton?? She's old and crazy!!
While Angelou is a well-known, respected author, I think a lot of younger voters are going to say, Maya Angel-who?
The other problem with this endorsement is that the HIlary camp probably had to solicit it, while I doubt Obama had to ask Oprah for her support. Again, I don't know that for sure, but it still looks like a counterstrike on the Hilary camp's part, and therefore looks unoriginal, insincere, and calculated.
Babs didn't work, so let's try Maya. It's like she's going to keep throwing endorsements and attacks and accusations at Obama until something sticks.
It's getting tired, and no one's falling for it. I wish she'd do something proactive for a change. So far, her campaign has been entirely passive-aggressive.
Maya who?
Maya Angelou knows about the electoral college.
Oh, thank you Maya, for your voice of reason and balance amid all the recent hooplah. You are a woman of depth, decency, and wisdom. Your endorsement of Hillary packs weight indeed. She is truly a strong woman and a protector of families and children as she has proven time and again. Her strength and knowledge in foreign and domestic policies puts her at the top of the list. She understands our country's problems and has the drive, intelligence, and and specific agenda to get our nation back on track.
OUTSTANDING, WHAT AN ADMIRED WOMAN!
GREAT NEWS FOR HILLARY AND ALL WOMAN, SHAME ON YOU OPRAH
I am African American and I hope that every Democrat that wants to win back the WhiteHouse, and let the good times roll again would know that Hillary Clinton is our best choice and only hope. I like Obama as a V.P to gain the experience and ready up for 2016. This is a very serious time, and Hillary is who we need. Forget the race issue. Hillary has more experience and a better chance.
Hillary is the leader we need if we want to see change in the white house. She has the fortitude to make changes for the best.
Hillary will still win the Whitehouse. Those who know and understand her, know America's future better than risk it to a trial-and-error Obama policies – if any.
"I'll see your Oprah, and I'll raise you an Angelou."
"Wait, wait... we're digging up MLK's bones now..."
Pathetic.
I'll vote for a person of color when his/her skills and resume are better than his/her opponent... in other words, the color of the skin doesn't matter, but the quality of the skills/resume does. In a theoretic matchup, Powell would win in a landslide over this joker Obama, even with help of Ms. Dopey Wind-bag.
But, alas, Powell will never run, because he's too smart and he knows what would happen in the process: his entire life, and his family, would be torn apart by the media and his opponents, all seeking dirt.
I'm African American. Maya Angelo supporting Hillary Clinton is a JOKE! This will not overshadow the underhanded, deceptive approach that is imbreaded into Hillary Clintons soul. She will not get my vote. She needs to go home and focus on being a wife.
I've seen multiple times where Hillary supporters are saying "shame on you" to Oprah. What is that all about?? Shame on her for what, not supporting the candidate that you support? Grow up!
Oprah is inspired by Obama (as am I) and his different brand of politics. If you aren't inspired, that's OK (even though it is probably because you're not listening), but that's your right.
I'm not really a fan of her show (just because I'm not really into daytime TV), but if Oprah sees some of the same qualities in Obama that I see, then that's fine by me.
Obama '08
Talk about pandering!! How obvious Hillary – I can't believe how obvious you are!!
Hillary Clinton is clueless about Iraq, clueless about Iran and clueless about how to work with anyone that's a Republican. She doesn't even carry the platform of the anti-war left.
She will cause us to lose the house and the senate again.
If Hillary becomes president we will see four years of the most intense political fighting we've ever seen. If you think the republicans were after Bill, just wait until they see Hillary's bone-head moves.
Even though she is a war hawk, she will be fighting and dividing this country even more than George Bush has.
This will be nightmare – four years of our history lost. Rush Limbaugh and Fox news are drooling in their lap s hoping she gets elected. Their audience will grow 10-fold.
Sounds like a lot of venting going on here without much clarity of thought, sensibility and realism. Oprah is supporting Obama because he's the most inspirational candidate (which is usually the first thing she looks for before endorsing anything/anyone), and because she believes that he can effectuate real, positive change in Washington unlike any other candidate running. Would those of you throwing the race card around embrace the silly notion that all of HRC’s white supporters are only backing her because she's white, or that women are only backing her because she's a woman? How about showing some intellectual evolution and stop the hate-mongering. And for those of you who believe that Obama can't win because of the tired, ill-conceived arguments that he's not experienced enough or tough enough, do the math. Obama has more elected years in office than HRC and more practical years working in the community at a grassroots level on issues affecting everyday Americans. His stated aggressive policies towards terrorism along with his forward-thinking diplomacy approach were once ridiculed and then embraced by foreign policy experts and military officials alike ("google" and do the research). Obama helped to deliver the first significant campaign finance reform law in Illinois in 25 years. He brought law enforcement groups around to back legislation requiring that homicide interrogations be taped and helped bring about passage of the state’s first racial-profiling law. He was a chief sponsor of a law enhancing tax credits for the working poor, played a central role in negotiations over welfare reform and successfully pushed for increasing child care subsidies (NYT, 7/30/07). As a Chicago community organizer, Obama notched accomplishments ranging from job-training programs to a successful attempt to improve city services at the Altgeld Gardens housing project, chaired a voter-registration drive that helped carry Illinois for Democratic presidential candidate Bill Clinton in 1992 and led an effort to acquire state money for a dropout prevention program that still operates today (any Obama bio you can find online). Toughness? Considering Obama's weathered HRC's petty, below-the-belt and comical attacks on him with flying colors (kindergarten ambitions? Come on!), I think it's safe to say that he's more than capable of withstanding any right-wing Republican shots. Here's the bottomline that folks should be focusing on. Can HRC get elected with her high negatives? Yes, but it won't be with a 50+1 majority but more than likely something closer to a 46-43 edge at best. With that kind of deficient win, HRC will not be able to govern or lead effectively because of the animus and distrust she generates from those "red states" and the other side of the isle that will bog down the legislative process in even nastier partisanship. That's why Obama's maturity, intelligence, vision, and skills as a proven leader, coupled with his broader appeal over that of HRC and lack of combustible "political baggage" in comparison to HRC, will allow him to do just as he says as President of the United States… bring both sides of the aisle and independents together to address and find solutions for the vital issues facing our country.
Quoting from another post similar to this one..."STOP BASHING BAMA, IT WILL NOT CHANGE OUR MINDS." Back to ya fool...STOP BASHING CLINTON, IT WON'T CHANGE OUR MINDS!."
P.S. I WILL NEVER VOTE FOR BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA MAMA, EITHER.
Maya Angelou? Just kidding. I know of and admire some of Maya Aneglou's work. But this announcement of Maya Angelou radio ad endorsing Hillary is just to try to counter Oprah's endorsement of Obama. I'm sorry but Maya Angelou has a biased view of the 2008 Presidential race. If memory serves me, Maya was a poet laureate of Bill Clinton and is a native of Arkansas. Maya read one of her poems at Bill Clinton's 1993 inauguration address. Here we go again with the Hillary riding the coat-tails of Bill Clinton. Maya's loyalty is to Bill and not Hillary.
There is a difference between someone like Oprah who is inspired to help Obama as opposed to Bill/Hillary requesting Maya (we did you a favor now do us a favor attitude) to do a radio ad.

She calls Clinton "a strong woman"????
Hillary stood by her man despite the fact he cheated on her REPEATEDLY! A strong woman would have kicked him to the curb!
Same goes for Clinton as I said for Obama – no one, and I mean NO ONE has the "power" to influence me to vote for a particular candidate. I might enjoy their talk shows or movies or poetry, but celebrities (with an inflated perception of self-worth) who think that their mere endorsement of a political candidate will sway the voting public are in for a rude awakening. My personal opinion is worth more.
For those of you who don't know who Maya Angelou is, check this link.
http://www.mayaangelou.com/ShortBio.html
And to those who think this a "Hillary trick" because Oprah backs Obama–Maya threw her suppport behind Hillary a couple of months ago. It was on the ticker. She is a brilliant woman. We need Hillary!
Maya Angalou is an excellent endorsement for Hillary Clinton. Maya understands the changes we NEED that will make life better for Americans.
Oprah Winfrey can sell her ideas of change all she wants. Oprah does not care for Americans the way she say she does. Oprah just wants Obama to win so that Oprah can say that for her first time being involved with politics Oprah has made the difference. AMERICA IS NOT VOTING FOR OPRAH. AMERICA IS VOTING FOR CHANGE.
The change we need begins with Hillary Clinton. We knew this way before Egomaniac Obama decided to enter the race. We don’t need Obama as leader. He is just trying to eat off of Hillary Clinton's plate. He doesn’t offer anything but ying yang. WE CAN’T EAT HOPE. Obama is selling us the Brooklyn Bridge. OBAMA CAN’T BEAT THE REPUBLICANS. A vote for Obama is not a vote for change; it is a vote for a REPUBLICAN.
Hillary Clinton is still the most qualified candidate, the most experienced candidate and she’s READY TO LEAD ON DAY ONE. Oprah can shoot her chops all she wants. It won’t change the fact that Obama is not ready to lead on day one as Hillary Clinton is.
Let's see Andrew Young's endorsing Hillary and says Bill knew a lot about dating black women. Streisand's endorsing Hillary and now Maya. Get serious, most of this country is under 50 and if they've heard of this troika, they haven't heard a lot.
Call you troika and raise you one Oprah! Enough said.
What a Classy endorsement from a great teacher and well respected and an inspirational lady. We will rise with you Dr. Angelou finally for equality in America for all women.
Echo the thoughts of your own minds and not the words of the media nor the themes of the political organizers. Research their backgrounds and character...my mind tells me that our policical system has been in dire turmoil since the 1960's and to continue down this path is bad for not just the country, but the world. Watch the eyes, the body movements, and trust your gut....are you truly inspired by who you're listening to? Obama happens to be my candidate because he truly cares about what he's trying to do. I ask .... listen...really listen to his message and despite whether you agree with his policies, you'll be inspired by his drive and commitment.
I dont care who endorses who- I always do my own investigation and make up my own mind! I think the celebrity endorsement of politicians has no place and they should stick to reading lines that other people write for them.
OBAMA IS A ONE TIME SENATOR (NOT EVEN THROUGH HIS FIRST TERM) WHO IS GOING FOR THE BIGGEST CEO POSITION IN THE WORLD- WOULD YOU PROMOTE A NEW HIRE DIRECTLY TO CEO??
Using AfAm against each other...And it never fails. Way to go sellout.
For everyone making the claim that Oprah is trying to tell people who to vote for, let's go over the equation again. Oprah's popularity gets people out to hear Obama speak so that those people can make up their own minds after hearing him speak whether they will vote for him or not. Oprah has said that she is not trying to tell people what to think but rather to just ask them to think.
Amanda from Orlanda commented: "While Angelou is a well-known, respected author, I think a lot of younger voters are going to say, Maya Angel-who?"
Statistically YOUNGER voters just do not actually vote in the sheer numbers which OLDER registered voters do – EVEN when they've indicated that they will!!! (Maybe Obama & Oprah can turn those numbers around – We'll just have to wait with bated breath to see BUT unless Oprah plans to tour ALL 50 states with Barack Iowa, SC, and NH may turn out to be just a big flash in the pan!)
I do however highly doubt that you're giving young and black voters enough credit for their knowledge of Angelou who "is hailed as one of the great voices of contemporary literature and
as a remarkable Renaissance woman"
Maya Angelou's appeal transcends race and surpasses any celebrity status. Her words will most assuredly resonate with the voters in SC.
Hillary is a winner against mud, with concrete change proposals, and hope with experience. Obama is another inspiring politician, full of great abstract rethoric, empty of concrete experience who is kneecapping the Democratic front runner. Obama will be easily defeated by any of the Republicans. Hillary is saving her best ammunitation for the Republicans. OBAMA NO GANA!
Clinton 08
Obama 16
Why are dems giving the opporutnity of getting the White House for the next 16 years. Let's do it people, be smart and far-shighted!
She gave her support months ago so this is not a counterstrike like some of you imply... you are all just jealous because Oprah's appearance was embarassing... think of what Oprah has done for the U.S. ? What? create herself tons of wealth? what has she done with it... in the U.S.? Compared to what this lady has done for Americans... no contest.... but that is beyond understanding of the Obama "babies"....
And Mark, in LA...so a strong woman kicks her cheating husband out to the curb and that upholds the values of her marriage to the guy? instead of working out their differences (in private) and making the marriage work to keep her vows? Oh, I forgot, you are probably one of those hypocritical "Christian" republicans who is a bible beater but not a bible follower....kicking one out when there is trouble shows strength and leadership right, instead of working out your problems?????
ARE YOU SERIOUS??? AS MUCH I LOVE MAYA SHE DOESN'T COME CLOSE!! SHE CANT GET 30K+ AT WILLIAM BRICE POINT BLANK. MAYA DON'T GET YOUR FEELINGS HURT PLAYING POLITICS WITH HILLARY; OPRAH ISNT PLAYING SHE'S SERIOUS.
Hahahahaha, I love Clintons sheet!
If you do not know who Maya Angelou is, then the American educational system is in more trouble than I thought and you all need to read more books and poetry.
So now, the same folks complaining that Obama haters complained about Oprah, are now complaining about Maya Angelou because she supports Hillary.
By the way, Obama is 46 years old and I believe he is a baby-boomer. So when he talks about getting rid of the current baby-boomer generation that is running things, he includes himself.
Ya'll can be really silly and large percentages uneducated!
[Hillary's] strength and knowledge in foreign and domestic policies puts her at the top of the list.
You mean, like when she voted to go to war with Iraq instead of waiting to let the UN inspectors finish their work and thus prove that Iraq didn't have WMD's?
Or do you mean when she called engaging in diplomacy without prerequisites “naïve”?
Or do you mean like when she voted to declare the Iranian military a terrorist organization, impeding diplomatic efforts underway?
You must be a fan of Bush's foreign policy. Hillary's foreign policy experience consists of voting “yes” to Bush’s foreign policies.
Why do candidates think we will vote for them ,if a celebrity endorsed them? I am listening to what they are saying and will vote accordingly.I don't care if a celebrity endorsed a democrat or a church endorsed a republican.I will vote based on their speech ,belief and what they stand for.Which i hope is average American.
Sorry, but Maya Angelou is no Oprah... It's not just about celebrity endorsement, the Oprah-factor is about the ability of a leader to persuade those who support them into supporting a certain candidate
Maya Angelou has no legions of followers, or mass amounts of people who respect her opinions. A few? Sure? Oprah-level? Not even close.
The difference between Hillary and Obama is Hillary has had the opportunity to establish herself with her foreign policy and her experience to handle whatever comes her way intellectually and apply important decisions accordingly. Obama on the other hand, is new and has not even attended to his work in the Senate as he should have. He says and promises whatever he needs to in order to win votes! That does not make a potential President as surely we must learn our lessons from this poor excuse of a White House that has screwed up this country big time, not to even mention what hatred it has caused the rest of the world towards Americans. We need someone that will work for the people, not Corporate America and that person is Hillary.
And I answer Hillary with this....
peace!
Why does Hillary has to go through so much from Chelsea, her mother to Maya....To me a good President is not supposed to go through so much shuffling people to equite what the opponent is doing. That sounds to be so much desperation......
Clinton or Obama – things look better to me already.
I think that Maya Angelou is an icon of literature and I think that Oprah Winfrey is an icon in media. I am glad they are involved in the process. What we need most is for everybody to get out and become involved. We are living the consequences of an apathetic America. We, as Americans, have the right, the privelage, the gift to choose our leaders. We need to seize that oppurtunity and make us the great country we have the potential to be.
Maya is not a christian. She is a muslim who ran to Ghana for along time and attended mosques there before she returned to America to become a writer. Be careful with whom Hillary is associating with...
Angelou is more of a nut job than Hitlery. If Clinton thinks this endorsement is going to help her, she is a bigger idiot than we thought. This will turn off more people than she knows...
Ron from Texas you are absolutely correct! Maya Angelou is no Oprah… she's not a sell out like Oprah. Maya Angelou is a woman that has earned people's respect she didn't have to buy it like you know who? And, you're right about the Oprah level – not even close – Ms. Angelou outshines Oprah BIG TIME. shame on you. Read about this incredible woman before knocking her.
One word, Bill Clinton. And I am all for getting people to vote for Hilary. I am an AA, but I am an American. I liked Clinton policies re foreign affairs, economy and war stance. It's time for Bill to return, only via Hilary.
All the best Hilary! Bring back the first black president of America!
Maya Angelou is a friend of the Clinton's. Remember her poem at his 1993 ceremony. I think her endorsement is more genuine that Oprah's. However, Oprah is far more known and Angelou can't compete with that.
Maya is a well respected and smart woman. I am so glad she is endorsing Hillary.
Mayo Angelou – didn't Dr. Evil sing a song about her, with Mini-Me on back-up vocals?
Seriously, this is such a transparent ante and desperate ploy from the Clinton camp to 'keep up' with Sen. Obama. Is she the best they could come up with? Are there not more influential (and known) people to campaign with?
Did all of you forget that Maya Angelou is married to a white man. So it is only befitting that she would endorse a white woman over a black man. She doesn't believe that she is black. She just play one on TV.
Racism is ugly, isn't it?
Fired up...Ready to move...Obama 08
She calls Clinton "a strong woman"????
Hillary stood by her man despite the fact he cheated on her REPEATEDLY! A strong woman would have kicked him to the curb!
Posted By Mark, Shreveport, LA : December 10, 2007 1:34 pm
You have definition wrong. Strong woman also try to make work inspite of her husband cheating on her.
Maya Angelou said "Hillary Clintons campaign is like an abstract poem – everyone sees something completely different in her answers. Take for instance when Hillary stated she supported Governor Spitzers proposal to reward illegal aliens for violating our laws and giving them a license. Some heard her say she supported that while some heard she was against it...abstract..its like a bad poem for the illiterate" (she might be onto something)
"I think that Maya Angelou is an icon of literature and I think that Oprah Winfrey is an icon in media. I am glad they are involved in the process. What we need most is for everybody to get out and become involved."
I agree. The point is not Oprah vs. Maya. The point is that Obama and Hillary will get more attention via these celebrities, getting the American people to become more interested in politics in general and hopefully vote.
For all you sour grapes chanting "Maya" Who? Let me educate you: Maya Angelou is the woman your precious Oprah runs to when she needs any form of guidance (this is by Oprah's own admission).
Hillary '08!
Anyone over the age of 18 who asks "Maya who?" is a victim of poor schooling. "Maya who" is one of the most influential and important writers of our time. Her poetry has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize and she read one of her poems at the 1993 presidential inauguration of Bill Clinton. She has been named of of the most 30 powerful women in America and has been honored by universites, government agencies, literary organizations, and many many more. If I hear someone say "Maya who", that will just prove how illiterate and ignorant that person is.
This story and the fighting it causes is the real problem. Who cares who Maya votes for or who Oprah votes for. Make up your own mind's people! Do your homework study the canidates and what each individual stands for. When we focus on endrosements and party B.S. we all lose democrat or republician. For God's sake vote for the best canidate not who a talking head tells you to!
Im assuming now Oprah has disowned Maya Angelou – or at least won't let her speak on the big "O" show until after the election ! ha ha
Big difference between the two endorsements: Oprah's was loud, classless, and based on race rather than experience. Maya's endorsement of Hillary months ago was quiet, thoughtful, and sincere. Maya is a beautiful, sensible woman who speaks to the hearts of all women. Now she is being insulted and disrespected by all the Republicans who are posting distorted info about her. You should be ashamed (as should Oprah who cheapened the whole campaign process with her stupid, ostentatious display in Iowa and South Carolina). More power to you, Maya, and GO HILLARY!!
Maya Angelou is a has been, a relic from the 50's who is irrelevant today. Obama brings change and no more Bush/Clinton/Bush/Clinton in the White House. Obama represents the future and Clinton represents the past. Obama represents progress and Clinton represents polarization.
Skunk?
http://www.golden-lamp.com
One should check into whether the Hilliary campaign PAID for this endorsement. I am sure that Obama did NOT pay Oprah.
Posted By Bob, Seattle : December 10, 2007 12:47 pm
You are casting doubts on the integrity of Angelou??
Pretty low coming from Politics of Hope grouopie supporter? Is Politics of Hope another world of Politics of Deception, Hatred, Cynicism from Obama supporters?
All those claiming Hillary has the most experience and has the judgment to lead the country make me sick.
If Democrats are dumb enough to nominate another loser in Hillary Clinton, Republicans will be laughing all the way to the White House.
Hey, maybe Toni Morrison is available for one of the other Democratic candidates. She possesses the only characteristic they're looking for, it appears.
We have tried the men. All women unite and vote for Hillary. Oprah, we need your vote!
They're creepy and they're kooky,
Mysterious and spooky,
They're all together ooky,
The Clintonian Family.
Their house is a museum
Where people come to see 'em
They really are a scream
The Clintonian Family.
(Neat)
(Sweet)
(Freaks)
So get a witches shawl on
A broomstick you can crawl on
We're gonna pay a call on
The Clintonian Family.
Obama looks like a college kid looking for a job without any experience. Obama is a good talker and smart, no doubt. But, we all know: "No experience. No job." Sorry buddy.
Besides, there are many other great candidates to choose from.
She calls Clinton "a strong woman"????
Hillary stood by her man despite the fact he cheated on her REPEATEDLY! A strong woman would have kicked him to the curb!
Posted By Mark, Shreveport, LA : December 10, 2007 1:34 pm
Mark, you think strength comes from kicking people away? You are one of the weakest weakling I have come across.
Strength is when you keep the wrong beside you more to change it for good. Weak men like you wont understand that:-)
To Linda From Portland Maine who thinks Hillary Clinton has foreign policy experience. What planet do you live on? When Bill Clinton was president his wife made no substantive achievements in foreign policy and was not present when the president met with the secretary of State. When Bill Clinton visited other countries Hillary came along and had tea with with first lady of the country while he was having policy meetings with the leader of that country. Do you call that foreign policy experience? Hillary apparently does.
The Clintonistas are absolutely hillarious! You bring out your black woman, we'll go and find one ourselves and put her in front of the cameras. It is so unbelievably pathetic! Can you imagine what the general elction will be like next year?????
THIS is why no one should want the Clintonistas and Her Royal Thighness in power EVER again. Polls and reaction. No forward thinking whatsoever, unless of course you really want the gov't to run every aspect of your life. Then, they're your mommy. If you want that, please move to Europe for that warm-fuzzy-someone-please-watch-over-me feeling. I'm tired of having by pockets picked by the useless politicians.
Gotta say, the Clinton political machine is so out of whack or was some kind of 1990's myth.
You don't do this a day after the Big O, you wait a few days or weeks as this looks contrived and desperate.
Hey Tom, I think you just answered your own comment.
Say goodnight Hillary, Clinton "fatigue" has set in and as the pundits are saying, as of December 1st people will start paying attention.
If that is the case her steady decline coincided with people "paying atention".
Joan from houston: Ease up on the lies.
Maya Angelou has never been Muslim, but she was the Northern Coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Do you realize how ridiculous the lies of Neocons seem to those with even rudimentary intelligence?
Lying posts and emails, being spread constantly by Neocons only serve to undermine the Neocons' ideals. It takes extremely low intelligence to believe these (like the ones claiming Obama was raised in terrorist schools). As we all know, people with far below average IQs are typically Neocon, so your messages of lies and deceit are ineffective.
I'm happy to see Maya Angelou be for Hillary. While Oprah has done a lot of good things, I do believe that this push of hers re: Obama is just another of her "let me see how much power I have" efforts.
In most recent years, Oprah has become a self-important, praise-hog and feels she can direct everyone. Well, I think for myself; I don't need her or anyone to tell me what books to read, what products to buy nor whom to vote for. All this Oprah for VP stuff is ridiculous. And her trying to sound preacheresque yesterday was a joke. Obama needs more experience to be president, especially for times such as these. Oprah can bring in crowds of her blind followers, but God please...don't let this turn into votes. Obama's not ready and Oprah will truly think she's God. She's not. And I also believe Oprah is fooling her followers re: she and her BFF, Gayle.
Ah, flip-flopping as usual, eh, Hillary? Were Mom and Chelsea not enough to win votes alone?
"Ike in Woodbridge VA" by any chance, would "letting the good times roll" involve me moving up to the next higher tax bracket and having to pay for these good times for those who don't particularly care to work?
Hillary will not beat the Republicans.
What does it take for people to understand that she IS THE MOST HATED POLITICIAN IN AMERICA. Republicans and Independents will turn out in droves to support ANYONE BUT Hillary.
Including Me. (And I am an independent voting for Obama in the open Ohio Democratic Primary).
I didn't know Angelou was an expert on foriegn policy, economic policy, immigration, the Constitution, etc.
But then again, all the other celebrities who endorse candidates make this ticker, so maybe they all are!
Ike, once again and for all you Hillary supporters I issue this challenge: Please list for me why Hillary has more experience than Obama. Please list for me her substantive senate bills she's AUTHORED and passed. I'll be waiting right here for your response.
I think Maya is within her constitutional right to support Hillary just as Oprah was in supporting Obama.
This leads me to question the way some bloggers were depicting Oprah as racist because she is supporting Obama. Oprah is not racist and Maya is not sexist. They both have their preferences based on what they see as the respective strengths of the candidates.
What I would like to know from those who tout Hillary's experience is this: What has been her signature legislation since being elected senator over six years ago? Does speaking, sounding, acting, and voting like Bush constitute foreign policy experience? If that is the case, why are condemning Bush/Cheney for taking us in the wrong direction? Why don't we wait and vote for Rudy because he would the true heir of Bush/Cheney and not Hillary who is a clone.
Obama has been in elective office for close to 15 years! His accomplishments far outweighs Hillary's with the exception that Hillary has been spending nights at the Governor's mansion and the White House. It is shocking that we are not being told the specifics of Hillary's experience.
This inexperience thing being tagged on Obama is a code word for racism -he is black and the country is predominantly white so Clinton being white and woman stands a better chance than Obama. But that is not politically correct, hence we use the code word of inexperience. Just tell us the basis of Hillary's experience. I will vote for Obama because he is the best candidate among the top three. I trust his judgement, resolve, and ability to work across the political divide. I don't care about his race or parentage. I know he is an American and I refuse to hide under the veil of racism to be using code words such as inexperience, untested etc as if Hillary's experience and wars of the 1990s brought on by her and husband's personal failings are things to be proud of.
All of you "Clinton Haters" on here need to stop bashing Maya Angelou. Do you SERIOUSLY think that a woman of her strength and knowledge could be bought for a price? If you do; you are among the ignorant masses.
It IS time for a woman to be President. Men have screwed this country into the ground with their egos and self-proclaimed superiority.
And as far as Oprah having a following...stupid people will always act like sheep. SHE is the paid political endorsement. And BOY did she pay!!!
How quickly we forget, CNN, that the Clintons invited Maya Angelou to give the commencement at Bill's inauguration in '92. This looks like a pretty simple case of Ms. Angelou– who I have great respect for– returning the favor.
Waiting in Sacramento. Obama was a State Senator who had half a term in Washington before deciding to run for president. Hillary has been in Politics for 30 years. What bills did Obama write and pass? For those of you who think Oprah appeals to the "young" voters not like that "crazy old lady" Angelou – Guess what – young people don't vote! They wear buttons and talk big but on election day they can't make it out of bed to get to the polls.
I laugh at the poster that says Hillary is the protector of families and children, that is as long as you are one of the unborn
While I have great regard for Ms Angelou, I worry that she hasn't checked with Children's Defense Fund founder Marian Wright Edelman about how she sees the Clintonian politics protecting children (and either his experience=hers or not, right?). Ms Edelman has said they are friends, but have distinct political differences on how to protect children. She talks about it at length.
You people have absolutely no culture if you don't know who Maya Angelou is. It's pitiful.
Thank you Maya! You are an admiral role model who I respect so much. I too, think Hillary is the best candidate running. I'm surprised more people have not come forward. My only thought is, they haven't been watching or listening.
lmao ,hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha no really its funny hahahahahahahaahahahaha
Thank you Ms. Angelou for supporting Hillary and for providing a voice of reason against the Oprah-Obama circus of this past weekend.
I respect more your opinion than anything Oprah may have to say. Thank you for remaining faithful to your friend and for stating that experience DOES count after all.
Obama get some experience. I believe deep down Obama doesn't even think he is ready to be President. This not a time to be voting on emotion. Hillary Clinton is by far the best Democratic Candidate out there. Of course the media, and the Republicans want her to lose, but I believe Democrats will use their minds and vote for the best candidate.
How sad. The great Maya Angelou could've been put to better use, in a 'natural' way; instead Clinton had to call her up in the wake of the Winfrey spectacular! How truly sad. Sorry, Ms. Angelou, you know and I know you'd rather be backing Obama, but that's okay, I still love ya!
Umm a lot of people are just idiots on here..
Maya Angelou backed Hillary Clinton 5 MONTHS AGO!
This isnt a NEW endorsement that was PAID for.
FYI -
QUINCY JONES BACKED HILLARY CLINTON 4 MONTHS AGO.
When you get a Radio ad with him, dont say you werent told!
Wow! I'm not sure who is running Hillary's campaign, but over the last month, Hillary and her campaign have made her look more idotic every day. First Oprah officially endorses Obama and joins his campaign team. It has long been reported (past 4 months or so) that Obama affectionately refers to Oprah as "my girl" in public sometimes. What does the Hillary Campaign do? Bill and Hillary ask the woman who was Bill's poet laureate (Maya Angelou) and addressed the audience at Bill Clinton's 1993 inauguration to do a radio ad in support of Hillary. They actually have Maya calling Hillary "my girl". WOW! Talk about non-original thinking!
Sorry Hillary, calling in your political "favors" does not resonate with American public.
Now that some of the dust has settled, let's talk reality.
Hillary Rodham Clinton is very intelligent, well organized, articulate, hard working and cares a great deal about the well-being of this country and it's people. Another of Hillary's assets is her ability to compromise. An important tool for getting things accomplished.
I admire Maya Angelou's support of Hillary. It shows she's her own person. What appears important to Oprah, is if it's EXCLUSIVE!
Ms Angelou was the poet in residence during Bill's administration. Therefore her support is academic, she knows Hillary more than she knows Obama. Maya and Oprah are really close friends too, so Oprah is obviously not telling her friends who to support.
- Hillary served as Arkansas's First Lady for 12 years
- Hillary served as America's First Lady for 8 years.
- Hillary served as US Senator for New York for 7 years
Obama once called Hillary the Senator from D-Punjab. That should give one something to think of his character.
Bush and Cheney have slipped while thinking the mic was on mute. But Obama did say it loud and clear. Obama is not perfect either.
For those of you Clintonistas who keep harping on the ELECTORAL COLLEGE? Obama will win because he CAN and IS bringing in INDEPENDENT VOTERS. They don't like Hillary. And neither do the Republicans who are now supporting Obama, like ME. It is time for a real change, not more Bush Cheney lite.
Ike, once again and for all you Hillary supporters I issue this challenge: Please list for me why Hillary has more experience than Obama. Please list for me her substantive senate bills she's AUTHORED and passed. I'll be waiting right here for your response.

I have a better idea, why don't you do what all informed voters should do and do your own research. To get you started, here's link to HRC's official website with a list of some of her accomplishments. In case you are a one of those conspiracy theorists, everything on this site can be verified at independent sites such as thomas.gov Bottom line: HRC HAS done been extremely active in her years as a Senator from NY and should be proud of her record. If that isn't enough for you, she's done many, many good things outside the realm of politics that benefit others that can be independently verified such as her work for the Children's Defense Fund and a life-long commitment to issues of health and education. Hope that's not too positive for you.

Each generation of African Americans stands on the shoulders of those who came before. Today, the challenges facing us threaten the dreams we have had for our children?--As a black man I take great offense to this statement. Growing up I would watch PBS's Eyes On The Prize and learn about the African American struggle. The shows would interview Ms. Angelou and she would go on and on about the hard ships Black Americans faced. She would suggest or say we need to support each other in her poems and statements. Now I see she is suggesting that Hillary represents standing on the shoulders of African Americans who came before us? I FEEL AS THOUGH I"VE BEEN SPIT IN THE FACE BY OUR SO-CALLED BLACK LEADERS ESPECIALLY MS. ANGELOU. I as a black person should look up to Hillary Clinton as the continuation of the African American struggle. A woman who is the senator of my state who has only visited Brooklyn once where the AIDS rate for African American women is one of the highest in the country. Yet Mrs. Clinton clearly pandered to African Americans at the Tavis Smiley debate sayinging some crap about "If a white women had AIDS there would be a cure..." Black people especially black women need to wake up! Clinton DOES NOT HAVE OUR INTEREST IN MIND. SHE DOESN'T EVEN HAVE THE DECENCY TO ADRESS THE AIDS ISUE IN HER OWN STATE AMONG THE VERY PEOPLE SHE WANTS TO VOTE FOR HER...YOUNG BLACK WOMEN! Black women need to get off of this need to hate Obama because Hillary is a woman. News flash not all black men are bad and yes Oprah made it on her own but she knows to have a good quality of life we ALL MUST RESPECT EACH OTHER! Sisters I appeal to you give Obama and and the future of black families a chance! Him, his wife and his children are a shinning example of what we as a race can shoot for. Please don't let your anger at a few knuckle heads spoil a potential blessings our people! Sorry to rant and I mean no offense to anyone. Thanks
I think Barack has already done the damage with his arrogance. He didn't put the democratic party first, we had a chance to go in witha juggernaut candidate and instead of him supporting the candidate that the majority of the party was behind and waiting he decided he would disrupt a strong base(african americans) and go for his, thats whats telling about Barack to me. The backlash is the perception that if Obama "hijacks" this nomination from Hillary that the party is going to jump behind him and support him. Thats the ideal situation and the way it should work, but I'm gonna say that Hillary has a lot of supporters who are not gonna be to forgiving to Obama and I think in the general where he's going to need every vote he may not get it. Not saying they will vote Republican , but I could see people just not voting at all. The problem is the way Obama came in to this and I am who believes he can possibly win the primary, but will be over matched in the general. It kills me that people think that whoever the Dems put in is a lock to win the presidency, cleary people who didn't watch GW win re-election when he had nothing positive going for him, I hate giving Repubs props, but if there is one thing they are good at is campaigning, yes its through half truths, innuendos, attacks, but unfortunately that stuff works and if Obama wins the primary he's in for a long rough ride and we'll quickly see that facade of Obama magically pulling Dems and Repubs together and everybody just falling under his spell for what it is..a fairytale.
A lot of you guys are wondering how much Clinton paid for Maya Angelou's endorsement, but I think you're forgetting that Ms. Angelou has a long history with the Clintons.
After all, she WAS Poet Laurete during Bill Clinton's presidency (one the of highest honors a poet can recieve from the government), and since she was appointed as the 1st one in 30yrs, I highly doubt that she forgot it.
...But with that said, I can just SEE the Clinton political machine saying to themselves,
"OK guys, we REALLY need a famous BLACK woman who every loves- Babs just ain't cutting it.
Hey, what about Angelou? Doesn't she owe Bill a favor for the whole Poet Laureate thing??"
Aye. OBAMA IN 2008!!!!!!!!
Regardless of who you vote for, this is indeed a proud moment for women, and indeed for black women–the fact that these are the people chosen to carry the next president over the threshold is something I am overjoyed to witness.
I love Maya, I love Oprah–neither one would stoop so low as to be a PAID ENDORSEE...so, may the best marginalized candidate WIN!!
Hurray for Change!!
I just read this on one of the political websites, regarding Oprah:
"She is one of the most influential US entertainers and is the second-most admired woman in the United States - behind former first lady Clinton, according to a recent Gallup Poll."
I knew Hillary was way up there, but I didn't realize she was #1. But that aside, democrats, use your head and realize that we need Clinton's experience and stability. Vote Hillary.
Kids, kids, kids...stop all the petty bickering for goodness sake. By the way Maya Angelou and Hillary Clinton go way back. Maya adores Hillary so I don't think she even had to ask let alone pay for her endorsement. Also, there has been a video of her on Hillar's website for months so this is not new. People would know that if they took the time to learn about ALL the candidates. I did take the time and that's why I support Hillary. Now now children...don't be bad boys and girls and play nice! Go Hillary!
P.S. You might say "Maya who" You would have to be into English Lit. She wrote the very famous "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" She was sexually abused as a child and for years refused to speak. She overcame all of that to be the great woman she is today. She's also Oprah's mentor so I'd be careful in your critism.
Now run along all you little children...
The disrespect shown to Maya Angelou by the bloggers on this ticker is disgraceful.
I am sure that the bulk of the hateful comments originated from Obama supporters trying to temper the impact of Ms. Angelou's support of Senator Clinton. And that makes me worry about the who is supporting him. Just another reason not to support him.
Regardless of the hateful bile that has come forth from the Obama camp, Ms. Angelou has as much right as Oprah to make her preference known.
The comments on this blog are so out of line! This is a woman of history whose writing and work for civil rights long before Oprah was even been born will be long remembered.
Oprah isn't qualified to buy her shoes, much less fill them.
No one in their right mind should compare Maya Angelou to Oprah. Ms. Angelous is one hell of a woman. And, she isn't a sell out. True american in the deepest sense. Before you compare these two women – read up on her. Oprah will never be a Maya Angelou
Ok, are we voting for a big name star, a renowned poet, a race car driver, what ??? I'm voting for a person who can turn this Country around and it's not Oprah or Maya. When Oprah got on her own big bandwagon this weekend and shouted the almighty 'Beleive In Change" , I got this really sick feeling about what her support is all about Oprah Oprah Oprah Oprah"...yes dear God it's all about me....Oh and a new trinket to add to my favorite things to have 'Obama" please....ha ha ha ...what a joke she is. Sets up private school in Africa and then has a sexual pervert run it for her. If that's good judgement on her part, what does that tell you about her endorsement of Obama. Give it up Oprah, your old news. TM...Mpls
If you don't know Dr. Maya Angelou, you don't have to comment. I like both Maya and Oprah. But, for this time, Maya read Hillary right. Oprah didn't read Obama right. With all respect, I wish Oprah prepare for this event more thoughfully, do some research on Obama's policies, stands, and most of all, avoid reading her notes when she speak. With complicated political issues, just throw a few "lines" is really not enough. She did great, but for Oprah, she is way better than that. I believe after the excitement, voters have to do their one thinking and make up their onw minds for what they believe, who they believe.
Maya Angelou is inspiration, lots of respect.
Wake me up when she's done, This woman would put a Meth USER to Sleep.
Many of the comments are not only tedious but infantile. Is this an sample of educated, reasoned thinking?
Not only did Maya Angelou speak at President Clinton's inauguration, but she was also named Poet Laurette by President Clinton.
I am not going to vote for clinton or obama, both are poor choices for president, I wish we had a democrat with something work voting for.
If they can not speak for themselves, then how will they speak as our president.
Obama looks weak and scared on the stage.
Clinton looks offensive, uptight and worried about speaking her mind.
I am a lifelong democrat and hate to say it, but am going to put the odds on another republican president.
The most baffling and embarrassing thing is the way Hilary seems to be running catch-up and copy cat with Obama.
yes black women celebrities are in.. Maya
Now its not strength and experience it is "new beginnings"?
You are 60, take lead or give way!
Oprah generates more attention in here than Obama. If not for Oprah, Barack would still be in oblivion unknown to anyone in the world. vote Hillary, now with support from Angelou, a respected person (obviously more convincing than Oprah since she doesn't do it for popularity) who commands everyone's attention.
Maya Angelou is an African American icon in her own right. Like Oprah, she sees what she is looking for in her ideal candidate. That she appeared on Oprah's show many times, thereby accentuating her personality and poetic passion, shows Oprah is an equal opportunity name maker. And this is why Oprah can draw 30,000 for Obama, but Maya cannot. They are two different people. That said, Hillary is going to lose in the long run, cause while America may be ready for a woman President, America is not ready for Hillary! She's the elastic hard plastic that stretches until her flaws are so transparent, they are frightening.
Why do Maya Angelou let the Clintons use her like this? This is really sad.
Changed my status to INDEPENDENT. Both parties are corrupt and I could care less what famous person they get to speak on their behalf. I'm also really irritated that the Obama campaign keeps calling me for money every day on my cell phone! Please stop calling my phone, you're wasting my daytime minutes! Thanks!
Isn't America great? Democracy lives in the USA even though displaying Maya this week after the OBama Oprah machine kicked butt this weekend is a bit sad for Hillary.
HRC is really trying to catch up in the democratic race and know where near a REAL position of leading her campaign with integrity, creativity, and power. Bill speaking out everyday for her makes her look even more disorganized. Hillary, if you really want this nomination show us you can do it on your own, we will listen.
Obama 08 you ARE the ONE!
Great Maya ! at critical time, you stand out for Hillary, the right choice you made. You know more than anyone else. Hillary is the best for our nation, and Obama would be the second if possible. I am sure that he will learn a lot from Hillary in future !
I agree with THE GOLDEN STATE comment. Bill take a nap, go play golf, let your wife be the candidate, even though we understand what a charge you get from the campaign trail.
But in all honesty Bill, we are seeing more of your mug in the media promoting HRC than Hillary, what is up with that? From my perspective, you have it backwards, unless of course Bill you really are the candidate ... in that case the signage needs to change.
Hillary we are waiting for you to speak up and sell us through your own words.
Hey rick life long democrat put the odds on another republican president trying to get vots for repulicans won't work after g.w.bush anyone with any inteligent at all would't vote republican Hillary 08
Oh I see now that CNN removed the comment from The Golden State, I guess they were wrong, democracy doesn't live anywhere near CNN.
wow the horrid maudlin poetry must not be selling too well,
poets used to alter the direction of sociaty now they shill for politicos.
Clinton equals ESTABLISHMENT, and the establishment is broke. A vote for Hillary is a vote for more of the same broken politics that have placed our great nation at the brink of ruin. Obama equals CHANGE, and the time for change is now!
I didn't know Maya was a socialist.
Maya Angelou is a has been, a relic from the 50's who is irrelevant today"

WOW…. I AM FLOORED. THIS PROBABLY HAS TO BE ONE OF THE MOST IDIOTIC COMMENTS I HAVE SEEN ON THESE BLOGS!!!!!!!!!!!!
AND TRUST ME, I HAVE SEEN A LOT.
Meanwhile, let's compare how our candidates have spent their time in the past week or so. Gee, Hillary Clinton has spent her time giving speeches at Wall Street, releasing proposals for the housing crisis, sending letters to Bush to ensure that he gets congressional approval before moving forward with security agreements with Iraq, sending letters to Condi Rice asking her to ask Libya to compensate US victims of terrorism….and what has Obama been doing? Oh yes, playing around with Oprah.
You better wake up people and you better do it quick. Too much is at stake!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why isn't anyone asking the question and more importantly, WHAT HAS BARAK OBAMA DONE TO EXEMPLIFY THE PRIVILEGE OF BECOMING "OUR" NEXT PRESIDENT??? I mean come one folks! Personally, I like him and would have LOVED to see a dual ticket with him and Hillary. Compared to what she has done over the LAST 35 YEARS, he has had only some MINOR accomplishments in his past but they do NOT warrant him the privilege to be president. All he is doing is attacking Hillary Clinton and NOT talking about what he has done in the past and how it relates to positive change for the future. I think that alone speaks to his inability to undo what this lousy and pathetic of an Administration has so successfully destroyed. We have to ask ourselves, are we really in a position to chance would be "judgement" over experience? I dont know about any of you, but I dont think we can afford to take that chance. Stop and think about it for a minute.
Good for Hillary! By the way, Maya Angelou is not a new supporter of the Clintons. Don't forget who spoke at Bill's inauguration in 92'. As a young (29) African American woman, I am supporting Hillary more and more. I am not convinced of Obama's ability to run this country and make the changes necessary to turn things around. Maya Angelou is "old and crazy?" That's like saying George W. Bush is smart and well-spoken. Good move, Hillary!

No the question is – what bills has Hillary written and passed? NONE!!!
She became senator for one reason only – to do what she is doing now!!
And laying around doing nothing but collecting government paychecks is called welfare by the way!!!
I challenge anyone here to NAME ONE ACCOMPLISHMENT this woman has acheived since she became senator.
All of you Clinton clones keep talking about her experience – SHE HAS DONE NOTHING more than supported George Bush's failed policies at every turn.
As Mitt Romney said, she hasn't ever ran a business, a government not even a corner store.
STOP IT WITH THAT 'EXPERIENCE' CHANT – IT'S NOT FOOLING ANYONE!!!
You Clinton clones are worse than Limbaugh lemmings. You are too easily suckered.
WHO?
I read about this on Global Grind (check out the story at http://globalgrind.com/content/fp1962775/Campaign-2008-Year-Of-The-Black-Lady) and I just think its great that so many people are noticing and talking about these two candidates and their campaigns.
- Hillary served as Arkansas's First Lady for 12 years
- Hillary served as America's First Lady for 8 years.
- Hillary served as US Senator for New York for 7 years

Thanks for the bio. Where's the experience again?
