Romney won a key conservative endorsement Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Republican Mitt Romney won the backing of the National Review Tuesday, an endorsement that is likely to give the former Massachusetts governor a boost in conservative circles heading into the first round of presidential primary contests.

In an editorial posted on the conservative publication's Web site Tuesday afternoon, the magazine's editors praised Romney for his executive experience and called him a "full-spectrum Republican."

"Romney is an intelligent, articulate, and accomplished former businessman and governor. At a time when voters yearn for competence and have soured on Washington because too often the Bush administration has not demonstrated it, Romney offers proven executive skill," the editors wrote. "He has demonstrated it in everything he has done in his professional life, and his tightly organized, disciplined campaign is no exception."

The magazine's editors also brushed aside doubts about the former Massachusetts governor’s conservative sincerity, calling him a "natural ally of social conservatives."

"He may not have thought deeply about the political dimensions of social issues until, as governor, he was confronted with the cutting edge of social liberalism," the editorial states. "No other Republican governor had to deal with both human cloning and court-imposed same-sex marriage. He was on the right side of both issues, and those battles seem to have made him see the stakes of a broad range of public-policy issues more clearly."

Blah!

Steve, WA   December 12th, 2007 11:25 pm ET

"A full-spectrum Republican"? Shame on National Review!

I think Romney's a nice guy, but how can he possibly run for President when he believes that a large segment of Americans (specifically, Blacks) cannot enter heaven? This is a big belief in the Mormon religion.

Romney's got alot of 'splainin' to do. And at this point, so does National Review.

Ahtram,

you have some explaining to do. You might want to talk with a member of the LDS church…you just posted a complete lie on CNN.

http://www.lds.org…see for yourself what has been since the church began over 100 years ago! Comments like this amaze me…

>Chris, Boston, Mass - "Look at his accomplishments!"

Yeah, like a socalist universal health plan where the uninsured are FINED $289. I can't wait until he can replicate his accomplishments at the federal level.

What else will his government force us to buy?

Frank, San Diego   December 12th, 2007 3:51 pm ET

As if Mitt didn't already have enough problems.

Chris, Boston, Mass.   December 12th, 2007 3:03 pm ET

People who are afraid of having a Mormon in the White House are really afraid of having to raise their moral and social standards. My pastor and I may not believe in some of the Mormon doctrine, but we both agree that Mormon values on everything from family issues to social politics could not be better.

Religion aside, Romney is by far the most qualified to run a country out of all the candidates, Republican and Democratic. Look at his accomplishments!

I'm voting the the genius, I'm voting for Mitt.

paul, chicago, il   December 12th, 2007 2:32 pm ET

Does any other conservative take the National Review seriously? I don't, not since they kept preaching the Bush party line and never had the guts to explain their flip-flop. Not one of my friends takes this "endorsement" seriously. I was just thinking Mitt was an okay guy. Then I read this.

Ken, Suitland MD   December 12th, 2007 2:12 pm ET

"Romney is an intelligent, articulate, and accomplished former businessman and governor." Oh please!!! Wasn't the right-wing press, likely the NatRev itself, saying the same thing about 'W' in 1999!!!! Boy that sure has worked out well for the country.

These same NatRev morons who supported Bush on 99% of his policies, including this never-ending war-for-revenge, are now calling him incompetent?!! Please, and this goes for all of you who voted for him and all his [R] buddies in Congress, take some PERSONNAL RESPONSIBILITY for your actions, and stop blaming others (i.e. your own leader!!) for the failed policies you support. If you have the guts to do that, then ask yourself this: 'why would I then want to compound my mistakes by voting [R] again???'

There is a real void of intelligence and morals on the right. They can no longer detect the hypocrisy, even when they step into a fresh pile of it. Pathetic!

Steve, Edmonton AB   December 12th, 2007 2:00 pm ET

Some Americans make me laugh. Everyone lauding your Constitution and the "American Dream" but even up here we get the sense that a woman, black, or Mormon running for president is just so "unAmerican" for too many of you.

Tom - Dedham, Mass   December 12th, 2007 1:35 pm ET

Still a very relevent magazine that I read regularly along with Time, you have to see and read differing viewpoints…

This is a great endorsement of a great man who doesn't have the skeletons that others possess, has business and government knowledge and whether you agree or not he did reach across the most LIBERAL of aisles to get health care reform passed in my state.

You will not find adultery, multiple marriages, drug use or "toe tapping" on his resume and since when did it become fashionable to mock someone for being a good strong family man who is actually a good guy and has ben acomplished at every venture he undertook.

Do we want someone who will restore some BRAIN matter, fiscal reponsibilty and bring NEW ideas into the white house after 8 years of arrogance and the dumbing down of America or do we just SAY that, but really only hope "MY SIDE WINS"?

I have posted many times already, if the Republicans are dumb enough to nominate Huckabee, I am taking my vote to the other team (just not Hillarity or Shiny pony).

"But Romney has changed his views", Yes he has, over a period of YEARS, not debates, polls or sentences like what's her name. There is a "slight" difference.

LeftyLoosey   December 12th, 2007 1:22 pm ET

The problem with Romney is not that he is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The problem is that he's a Republican member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints..

Val Davydov, Agawam, MA   December 12th, 2007 1:22 pm ET

Josh, Cleveland, OH:

You stop short of explaining exactly what is misleading in Romney's new ad in Iowa. If you have reasons to believe the ad was misleading be kind and share with us. It is a well known fact that Huckabee is soft as a grape on immigration. In addition, he is fiscally weak, has poor judgement when it comes to criminals, and he will lose badly to any Democratic candidate come general elections (hope he doesn't get that far). And what's up with his Fair Tax?

On the other hand you have Romney, who "stood up, and vetoed in-state tuition for illegal aliens and opposed driver’s licenses for illegals". Romney turned a huge deficit into a balanced budget without raising taxes or increasing debt in Massachusetts. Romney balanced the budget every year of his administration, closing a nearly $3 billion budget gap inherited when he took office. Romney in fact got the economy moving again and turned deficits into surpluses, while at the same time addressing major health care (health care reform was passed into law) and educational issues.

Which candidate would you choose? Obviously the one better qualified to hold the highest office of our land - Mitt Romney.

I congratulate him on this well earned endorsement. Well done!

AJ, IL   December 12th, 2007 1:17 pm ET

Romney will lose. He is the John Kerry of the Republican Party. Who else was a proclaimed businessman and ex-governor who ran for president recently? That would be GW Bush. The Democrats would love a Romney candidancy. Once they exposed his flip-flopping on important national issues (and occasionally throw out controversial Mormon doctrines), many Republicans won't vote for him. Romney literally has the great potential to be "swift-boated" in the general election.

gary goodman, morristown, tn   December 12th, 2007 1:13 pm ET

NY Times reports today that a Willard Romney from MA recently donated $10,000 to the National Review. Gee , you don't think it might be 'ol "Mittens" Romney now do ya?

shawn mac, calgary, ab   December 12th, 2007 12:24 pm ET

Romney has a PROVEN record of successful leadership! End of story. Do some of the other readers out there actually believe a person should stick to an original position if further study and investigation proves perhaps a change would be better?

Steve, NY   December 12th, 2007 12:15 pm ET

National Review = Not Relevant

Dan, Saint Louis, MO   December 12th, 2007 12:08 pm ET

Go Mitt! Brightest, most vision, toughest and best candidate.

E. C., Houston, Texas   December 12th, 2007 10:56 am ET

Romney vs.Edwards….clearly…Edwards is the very BEST Leader the Dems have to offer. He will be the 'sleeper' when this 'entertainment roll of Obama and Clinton' goes away. Romney is only one of three great Leaders in the Republican Candidates.

E. C., Houston, Texas   December 12th, 2007 10:48 am ET

Romney vs. Huckabee is a NO-BRAINER…
Romney is the real Leader.. where integrity and character matter the most. Huckabee is a fast-talker and greedy….like a typical Evangelical huckster in a traveling tent revival. Can't trust the guy…not qualified to be President!

Dan Tanner   December 12th, 2007 10:45 am ET

We don't need any believe in mythology in any high office. These guys are both idiots!

Jim, Medford, OR   December 12th, 2007 10:29 am ET

what a joke. This is the same editorial staff that was a cheerleader for Bush and his misguided policies. Now they call the administration incompetent. What does that make them?

Fred, Walnut Creek, CA   December 12th, 2007 10:01 am ET

Mitt Romney's dad (George) was Governor of Michigan when I was growing up there. He did a fantastic job with the State.

Mitt has proven himself a leader with the Salt Lake City Olympics, lead the liberal state of Mass., grew a major financial corporation, etc.

We need someone like him to lead this Great Country…not another life-long civil servant (like Bill and Hillary). They have been on the federal dole long enough.

Eric, Louisville Kentucky   December 12th, 2007 9:57 am ET

You people that fear religion in America, Huckabee is the guy that scares me the most. Why are the negative attacks by the press against him non-existent to this point? Is Matt Drudge correct when he calls Huckabee the glass jaw the Dems can break in the general election?
Romney is the real deal. The only bad thing the libs can say about him is changing from prochoice to prolife! Good for him. It kills them that someone defected from their side. Give me a break. This guy is squeaky clean.

Hugh Hefner   December 12th, 2007 9:53 am ET

Yes, but will he get the most important indorsement from the political editors of Playboy magazine?

Butch Dillon   December 12th, 2007 9:52 am ET

If Romney is accomplished at anything, it's lying. His training as a Mormon missionary provided him with a life long skill in the art of Machiavellian prevarication. And it's been on display ever since he entered politics. Slick Willy nothing? Hey, this Romney character is so slippery they have to sand his walking path to avoid spills.

Marc, Boston, MA   December 12th, 2007 9:50 am ET

Wake up! I guess that is difficult when so many are so unconscious. Romney, while courting the governors title of MA , said anything to appease the minds of people. After winnning the election he slowly shifted his views to what you hear today. Flip flop… He is doing it again. Why is this so difficult to see for many? A wolf in sheeps clothing.

Joseph, Grand Rapids, MI   December 12th, 2007 9:47 am ET

Mitt Romney is the real deal and this can only help him in his run for the next President of the United States. He has my vote, because I know he is the only one who can pull this party forward and defeat the democrats come November 2008. He will win IA, NH, MI! Go Mitt!

S. Wright   December 12th, 2007 9:47 am ET

As a conservative, I am not yet a supporter of Romney, nor any other Republican candidate at the present time.

I am also not surprised by the endorsement of Romney by The National Review. Kathryn Jean Lopez has been a cheerleader for Romney since the very beginning.

I am not a fan of The National Review. They have come to embody the entitlement belief that cost the Republicans, and by extension, conservatives, in the last election.

The Review's opinion pieces used to be optimistic; now, they are whiny, insipid, and vapid distillations (you reading this, Rich Lowry?) that the liberal elite push on us every single day. There is no difference between the two.

Whoever wins the Republican nomination matters little. If Hillary Clinton can have her entire campaign derailed by one serious question about immigration, the Republican candidate will be a foregone conclusion for the White House.

That may, or may not, be a good thing for conservatives.

Dan, Illinois   December 12th, 2007 9:24 am ET

How can Romney be trusted? All he does is Flip Flop. The only candidate that doesn't flip flop is Tom Tancredo. TANCREDO 08!!

Lars, DC   December 12th, 2007 9:22 am ET

Fianlly someone recognizes the value of Mitts corporate background anf his ability to get things done! Go Mitt 2008!

John, Des Moines IA   December 12th, 2007 9:19 am ET

Romney should be touting his business experience more. America needs a strong economic leader - no one is more qualified than Mitt in that regard. America has lost it's position and needs to find it's way back again. Mitt for 2008.

Tracey, Durham, NC   December 12th, 2007 9:19 am ET

If anyone is worried about how he would do as a President, just look at all the great things he did as Governor. He openly states that in essence he was pro choice but when it came to making decisions as a governor he came down on the side of life. This isn't flip flipping people, it's working through a problem and making the right decisions. This is exactly what we need in a President. If you want comprehensive bi-partisan healthcare reform - elect Mitt. If you want real fiscal change in Washington - elect Mitt. If you want someone who can work hand-in-hand with Democrats to start making progress in Washington - elect Mitt. Don't just look at what candidates are SAYING, look at what they have DONE. Whoever you have chosen to support, HONESTLY look at what they have done. Yes, that means you! No more laziness in believing that your candidate will represent you because they spout a few of your "hot buttons". Our poor country cannot take another four years of that.

S.B. Stein E.B. NJ   December 12th, 2007 9:18 am ET

If Romney is going to win this, he will need to over come the rising tide for Huckabee. Do I think that this endorsement from a well regarded conservative magazine? I can't say just yet. There is much to go before the final selections begin. Here's to hoping that there is no foot-in-mouth disease! But I do have to say it does make things more fun.

Surrealist, Fort Myers, FL   December 12th, 2007 9:09 am ET

I believe John Edwards is the most articulate on key issues on the minds of the MAJORITY of our nations working people–of all economic levels. While he perhaps is less suave at exuding confidence–his spirit is stronger than any candidate I can recall in my 52 years on this planet. Romney's OK..but what the American people want is "real" change in Washington. They want their votes to "truly" be reflected in action coming out of Washington.

Cindy, Reston, VA   December 12th, 2007 8:55 am ET

He is a proven leader and would make an excellent executive. Nice hair too.

Jen, Cedar IA   December 12th, 2007 8:35 am ET

Mitt is the most uniting candidate of either party. He also is one of the most accomplished and intelligent. He works hard, is from a SOLID family, would respect the Oval Office and the White House as they should be. He listens and puts together bi-partisan plans and then if they're good, he impliments them. If you haven't listened or read more about him than these little article-lites, then you have no license to comment on his ability, go check him out. You can try to bash his character all you want, but that only shows your own weakness, not his. His character is strong, he has deep integrity and respect from both sides of the aisle. Don't kid yourself, those of you who claim "flipflop", who are YOU voting for? People can change their views, I know I have over the years. Hillary doesn't just flip flop, she claims to be on both sides of an issue, hoping to fool everyone into thinking she shares their view. Weak.
Romney has DONE plenty, does not claim to be perfect, he's a hard worker with a goal of uniting this country with strong families (which is where true strength of a country lies), strong defense, respected international relations and fiscal responsibility. He did it in Mass, Check out the Health Care plan there. My entire family and most of our friends are caucusing for Romney and no, we are not Mormon (for those of you who are ready to pre-maturely pounce on that irrelevant topic).

Wayne, Greenville TX   December 12th, 2007 8:01 am ET

In an editorial posted on the conservative publication's Web site Tuesday afternoon, the magazine's editors praised Romney for his executive experience and called him a "full-spectrum Republican."

Actually, Mitt Romney covers the spectrum from A to B.

Dale Davis, Glendora, California   December 12th, 2007 2:44 am ET

Romney is the ONLY one with the brains to organize and plan for the American economic future. With all of the scarey predictions oozing out of the Wall Street intelligencia, we need Mitt now. Most smart money people gush about having Mitt as the next President. His business accomplishments speak for themselves.
The rest of the candidates are OK enough, maybe for normal economic times. However, I don't think that is what's headed our way, just around the corner in the coming years.
Smart choice National Review!!!!

Bradley Schaubs, Greeley, CO   December 12th, 2007 1:38 am ET

Keep running this race, Romney. I think that in the end, it'll all be for naught. The Democrats control the congressional chambers and soon, they'll have the white house as well.

"If Mitt Romney ever had my vote, he lost it today by releasing a misleading negative ad. Don't try to mislead Americans Mr. Romney. My vote goes to Mike Huckabee"
_____________________________

Misleading? The add is completely truthful. It is completely straight forward and to the point with no false information. If you do not like the facts, perhaps you should take another more honest look at the candidates. Do you know what still amazes me? Mike Huckabee STILL to this very minute supports his push to give the children of illegal aliens special tuition rates and scholarships. How frickin' thick do you have to be not to see that this man is a traitor to our country.

Oh no - You are focused on that fact that Mitt Romney had to say HELLLLOOO! This man supports illegal immigration. So Mitt Romney told the truth and because the truth is ugly and pathetic on the part of Huckabee, you're offended. IT IS THE TRUTH! Bottom line - Where do you stand on the illegal immgration issue? Do you care? If you do, you will give your vote to a man who has always opposed illegal immigration and is the only candidate that opposes amnesty.

Huckabee's 9 point plan: #1 Tell the illegal immigrants that they were very naughty to sneak into the country. #2 Help them fill out their forms to become legal citizens. #3 While they are there filling out their forms with the help of thousands of interpreters paid for by legal citizens, they can also fill out the college scholarship forms for all of their children - save time! ……
SHEEESH!

Brad Johnson   December 11th, 2007 11:21 pm ET

Unlike Huckabee, Romney's smart enough to believe in evolution. He knows how to interpret THOUSANDS of pieces of evidence, where Huckabee ignores the facts because his theology dictates such nonsense.

I just hate the tortured excuses that people (and now news magazines) make when they select a candidate. If they disagree with his previous positions, then please don't try to make up excuses for why he held those positions. It's that same psychosis that had Clinton supporters justifying his philandering and Bush supporters justifying his misadventures in Iraq.

It's enough to say you think he's the best candidate. Do ya have to make excuses for the areas where you disagree with the guy? Sheesh.

Oh man, and I was just starting to think that the National Review was the most credible political media source. But, if they want to pick the bully of the Republican field who has no record of success and resorts to attacking anyone in the race who scares him, then I guess they aren't so good after all…

John Allen, Boston MA   December 11th, 2007 8:51 pm ET

All the Giuliani and Huckey supporters on here crack me up. They can't hit Mitt on anything substantial, so they just call him names. The fact is, if Romney does not get the nomination we get 8 more years of the Clintons. Smart Republicans (like the National Review editors) recognize this. It's time for the dumb Republicans to see it too. I'm voting for Romney.

Daniel, NY   December 11th, 2007 8:42 pm ET

Yet he massively trails Huckabee in a new Iowa poll just released. But there are many indications that this might not be that disastrous for his campaign, for his loss is becoming so expected that he might very well hang on in New Hampshire (read this analysis that makes the case that the GOP race will become a Huckabee-Romney showdown).

Tom Dedham, Mass   December 11th, 2007 8:38 pm ET

The National review is still relevent as ever and this is a great endorsement for a great man.

He's actually been in CHARGE of businesses, ran a state and SAVED the olympics with bold ideas and thinking outside the box visions.

Has he modified some of his positions over the YEARS, yes he has.

Based on lifes experiences.

If you think EXACTLY like you did so many years ago even today, you have a closed mind.

Now if you want to talk about flip-flopping from debate to debate, crowd to crowd and speech to speech, I have a certain "woman" for you, vote for her because she is the "bestest", but this candidate is not running on anyone's accomplishments but his own.

Who in this election cycle has actually gotten health care passed as LEADER of a state by reaching across the aisle in a vastly LIBERAL state?

I know of one…………..

Ethan Huntington UT   December 11th, 2007 7:53 pm ET

I believe Mitt is the man for the Job. I would love to see Mitt run a more positive campaign but never the less I feel like he is the most qualified and capable person we have seen for decades. He's truly what we need in this country.

Huckabee is a nice guy, really. He has a good presence…But that ad is dead on. People need to start looking at his resume and his decisions…I am not saying that means vote Romney, but lets at least do our homework before jumping on the recent Huck train.

Yes the Romney camp is attacking Huck's camp, but it is because he is vulnerable in this area, and others…problem is your average joe will not care to find that out.

Finally, a well-known, reputable source has come out and said what many shoudl have been saying all along- Romney is a PROVEN LEADER with REAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS!!!

Mitt Romney headed up one of the most successful venture capital firms in the country. In MA, he rolled up his sleeved and provided real leadership to close a budget defecit WITHOUT RAISING TAXES, and he turned the corruption plagued, financially troubled SLC Olympics into a huge success. That's the type of leadership we need - PROVEN RESULTS!!

RB, from the bay state   December 11th, 2007 6:21 pm ET

He couldn't run Massachusetts and he sure can't run America.

He spent most of his term as governor building his resume for a presidential run. He did nothing but bad-mouth the state the voters here elected him to lead.

He's a phony and a fraud behind that pretty mask.

Thomas, PHX, AZ   December 11th, 2007 6:13 pm ET

Does any one worry that even though Huckabee has hypothetically taken a lead in some polls, the Democrats still have not said anything attacking him or his many faults which continue to pop up. Might this be becuase they recognize that if they want a Democrat in 2008, he's there best chance. Not only is Mitt Romney the best candidate out of the Republicans. (Leadership abilities, intelligence, competance, and just about any other good characteristic you look at). But he is also the only Republican candidate who will be able to beat the Democratics come November. I truly hope that the people in America recognize this, for my own future and for the future of this great country.

The National Review publisher and editors just want Mitt Romney to renew his subscription for another year.

jw, canadian,ok   December 11th, 2007 5:48 pm ET

Will this put him in double digits?

Jo R, Buena Park, CA   December 11th, 2007 5:47 pm ET

OK! Flip Flop.

Dan, Saint Louis, MO   December 11th, 2007 5:40 pm ET

This is one of those rare endorsements that counts. The National Review is right on! He is not only a foreign policy conservative (Giuliani) or social conservative (Huckleberry). He represents all three pillars of Republicanism. He is also a law-and-order leader with a business record that will knock your socks off and a sound family life, which shows his true values. He is far and away the most intelligent candidate and he has a record of cutting waste and bringing organizations out of debt. As a voter, no other candidate excites me like Mitt Romney.

Josh, Cleveland, OH   December 11th, 2007 5:38 pm ET

If Mitt Romney ever had my vote, he lost it today by releasing a misleading negative ad. Don't try to mislead Americans Mr. Romney. My vote goes to Mike Huckabee

Lee, Mays Landing New Jersey   December 11th, 2007 5:32 pm ET

He is the republican establishment candidate.
He is the man with the money.
He has perfect hair and will say anything to get elected.

Rich, Des Moines IA   December 11th, 2007 5:32 pm ET

Please read the assessment. It is the most honest, articulate and logical conclusion I've read. I'm joining the Romney bandwagon.

Gary, Detroit, Mich.   December 11th, 2007 5:32 pm ET

If you're worried about the Christian Taliban, then Huckabee is the guy to watch out for. He's the religious nut case. Not Romney.

KEITH JAMES LOUTTIT   December 11th, 2007 5:27 pm ET

The Board believes he'll follow the current Neo-Con line, therefore, won't have to rollover our contributing staff of writers, and our subscription sales will be sustained after Bush leaves office.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Joe Alonzo, New York, NY   December 11th, 2007 5:25 pm ET

"Full spectrum"? HAHAHAHAHA. I guess it's easy to cover the full spectrum when you're willing to change your positions every time you speak. Good luck with that, Mitty.

Also, is anything the National Review does still newsworthy? They haven't been relevant since Romney was pro-choice.

Don Ks, KS   December 11th, 2007 5:15 pm ET

He's a religos biased candidate - he says he isnt but he is - we dont need a country run by Christian Taliban.

Bryan, Firestone, CO   December 11th, 2007 5:14 pm ET

Amen to that. Romney clearly possesses the skills and leadership this country needs. He is not without his faults, but I think his strengths clearly outweigh any faults people have with him, and he's a proven leader with a proven track record. Romney 08!

Thomas N., Orange County, California   December 11th, 2007 5:11 pm ET

Now that is an endorsement! Go, Mitt, go!

gimmeabreak, Fort Myers, FL   December 11th, 2007 5:08 pm ET

Interpretation:

The Board believes he'll follow the current Neo-Con line, therefore, won't have to rollover our contributing staff of writers, and our subscription sales will be sustained after Bush leaves office.

Romney2008   December 11th, 2007 5:05 pm ET

"Romney is an intelligent, articulate, and accomplished former businessman and governor. At a time when voters yearn for competence and have soured on Washington because too often the Bush administration has not demonstrated it, Romney offers proven executive skill," the editors wrote. "He has demonstrated it in everything he has done in his professional life, and his tightly organized, disciplined campaign is no exception."

I couldn't agree more. The only addition I would make is that he is also proven his skills, integrity and character in his personal life as well.

Kudos to Romney!
