The Clinton campaign is aiming to show a softer side of the New York senator.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Democrat Hillary Clinton got visibly emotional at an Iowa campaign event Monday morning designed to showcase a softer side of the New York senator.

Flanked by childhood friends and constituents who each offered testimonials on the Democratic presidential candidate, a glassy-eyed Clinton spoke noticeably softer than most past appearances on the stump.

"It is very exciting for me to have so many of my friends from my entire life who have come out here, to talk with Iowans, to answer questions, to give you some insight and information about our relationships, about what I've been trying to do my entire life, and particularly as an adult," Clinton said at a campaign event in Johnston, Iowa Monday.

"What I try to do every day is figure out how to help somebody,” she said later in the event. “You can try to help somebody every single day, and I’ve tried to do that as a public servant, as an activist, and now as a senator."

The event coincides with a new campaign Web site — www.TheHillaryIKnow.com — that includes videos for several friends, colleagues, and constituents of Clinton's speaking on her behalf.

The event and Web site are all part of an effort to convey a softer image of Clinton, as polls continue to indicate Democratic primary voters view her as less likeable and more like a "typical politician" than her chief rival, Barack Obama.

A spokesperson told CNN the site will help round out what caucus-goers don’t know about Clinton. “You want voters to have the fullest portrait of your candidate possible when Election Day comes around and that’s what you’re seeing us doing right now.”

The surrogates from the Web site will be fanning out across Iowa and telling their stories over the next three days on Clinton's "Every Caucus Counts Tour."

Cry Hilary Cry!! anyone with a human heart has cried at some point in their life. That's what 's wrong with our country. If this country had enough people that cried and had real human emotions we wouldn't have wars and so much violence. Is this God's country or man's? Men aren't as hard as they claim.

:) WE SUPPORT HILLARY '08

She's the only one who can "roll up her sleeves and clean up the mess" left by the GOP — NOT dreamer boy!!

Or vote Biden or Richardson b/c God save our country if the newbie gets elected – who isn't even wise enough to realize what he DOESN'T KNOW yet; let alone play pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey in the Oval Office –> He clearly could have waited until 2012 or 2016. He's only 47, but he's such a baby that he's demanding to be King now :( Sadly the great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Senator Obama is certainly NOT!! AND Oprah should stick with her own life and hawking her Book Club (which she can't even get right all the time either).

Senator Obama wants to raise the minimum age (again) to receive maximum Social Security benefits! Have not our parents and our elders waited long enough?! How long will we have to wait??

AND NO MORE having to explain to our children – why it's (NOT) OKAY for the President Of Our Nation to do drugs!! It's time to take back our country and make America proud again.

JUST SAY NO – TO OBAMA IN '08 :(

ps – to all the anti-Hillary club members here PLZ go play on your own sites, it seems you are turning off potential voters and Independents for ALL CANDIDATES by your constant trivial & trite drivel. Do you all pat yourselves on the back at the end of the day for a job well done?! Do you EVEN have jobs? Highly doubtful…

Seriously.. Hilary wants America to foot the bill because Bill cheated on her.

Folks, let’s all cheat on our partners and promise them the Presidency as a consolation price when they threaten to leave us, and then make the American people pay for our lust by voting our partners in office.

When we realize that the American people is not buying in, let’s train them to cry to get the American people to vote for them out of pity…

It has nothing to do with religion, liberal democrats for the most part are nasty, mean, hateful, selfish, dishonest people. You seem like the average NYC lib, for your sake I hope that those bible belters are wrong about there being a god."

Having lived in upstate NY, so-called "Hillary Country" and in the "red state" South, I have to agree with your comments.

People in blue states are so negative about everything. Conspiracies are everywhere, the government is no good, the world is coming to an end, and anyone who makes a buck or two is the devil himself!

I think it is because they smoke too much pot.

Doug, New Jersey   December 18th, 2007 5:43 pm ET

There are still some very good liberals around but they are very few and far between.

What once was the ideology of peace and love is now the most hateful ideology America has to offer.

Liberals in blue areas pretend that the rest of the nation is filled with bible thumpers who want all gays killed and want to force feed their religion upon every American. The reality is that these people in the middle of the nation are the most kind, thoughtful, fair, honest, and giving people ANY nation has ever had.

I hate religion but I'll side with the religious right since the hate that defines most liberal Democrats is the most disgusting part of America today. Hillary really does seem to be the candidate of the hateful lib, although the fact that John Edwards has destroyed the lives of many people with frivolous lawsuits is awfully attractive to the average liberal Democrat. Most of them love to see someone who has worked hard have their money taken for no honest reason, and have the recipient be some druggie, liar who doesn’t deserve one cent of it. Also, the biggest racists in America are liberal whites against white people, if you have attended a North East University then you already know that. Just remember some libs are great people, to say they all are the same is being awfully lib yourself.

Shawn, New York, NY   December 18th, 2007 4:30 pm ET

Please note, CNN, that beginning with this story, the next 7 stories posted are either pro-Hillary, or relating to an attack from a Hillary supporter against another candidate. It would be nice if you would at least pretend others are running for the nomination and give them a little coverage.

Tom Dedham, Mass   December 18th, 2007 4:26 pm ET

Had the comments been impromptu and Hillary caught off guard by these comments at an event not by design then the situation would be much different. Instead the event is staged and choreographed, which makes it come across very fake.

And for those saying it is gender bias to hold this against her because she is a woman, you are working off of a false accusation. I have the same opinion of Mitt when he said he cried as well. Friends and family, as well as religious faith, are very personal private issues. To make a public display for the benefit of gaining votes is to devalue those personal issues. It all comes across as contrived and phony.

Posted By David, Gilbert Arizona : December 18, 2007 1:48 pm

I agree with your first point totally David, it was a planned and purposeful event for her to SHOW EMOTION.

The Romney point is a little different as he was responding to an unscripted question and was totally off the cuff.

Could it have been done on purpose, yes, it could have, but he had NO idea the question was coming so he could get the benefit of the doubt if you were so inclined.

Her campaign admits that they are using a STATEGY to make her seem softer.

It'a a little different.

C'mon Clintonistas,

It's not because we men are afraid of Hillary the woman getting more power. It's because she scripted a tear on demand that makes us laugh at her attempt to show her human side.

Why does she even have to show her human side? When have we ever seen Clinton cry. She didn't cry when her husband was cheating.

So the one time she picks to cry on national television is when she is hurting in the polls and needs to show her softer side; hence, the reason people call her a phony.

It has nothing to do with being sexist. Please posts before calling people sexist for complaining about her being a phoney.

Superimposing your own false ideas on the truth is HRC does to create something out of nothing as a smoke screen. It seems the die hard Clintonistas that come on here to defend her scripted tears have indeed graduated from Clinton 101 as well.

Give Billary Clinton his/her due; they have their die hard base actually believing their own drivel.

Hahahahahahah! Dolts.

Chip Celina OH   December 18th, 2007 1:38 pm ET

She teared up, because she had family and loved ones share lovely things about her. How does that make her or it fake. You people are so harsh on here, when most of you only hate her because shes a strong women get over it.

The big 'show' and fake part was having a parade of all of these folks from your past talking about how nice you are. Where's Art Linkletter at? He should have been called to host this episode of "This is Your Life."

I don't hate her because she's a strong women (shouldn't that be singular?), I don't like her because she and her husband go around lying day after day and expect people to believe them. That's an insult to everyone's intelligence (if, indeed they possess some).

Those not lucid enough to catch on continue to express views such as the following:

Hillary is a great leader. She is intelligent and strong and has awesome leadership skills. She will make a great president and is a great role model for young women. Go Hillary!!!

Have a great day!

All I can say is that Hillary is doing a very good job on her campaign. Hillary shows her commitment, determination for change. Hillary's experienced and knowledge are showing every time I see her talk on her campaign. People get to know you already Mrs. clinton. They are seeing it. You are there for us to rebuild this country that we love so much. I am looking forward to the first woman president of the United States of America.

Eileen, New York, NY   December 18th, 2007 12:20 pm ET

Of course Hillary is "cold and calculated." Can you imagine the reaction if she showed emotion? She'd never be in office. She'd be seen as "hysterical."

Does anyone talk about male candidates being cold? If this was a man, he'd probably be seen as running a very smart campaign.

She managed to win over the votes of upstate New York Republicans, and let me tell you, that's not easy. She did it through tireless research, meeting personally with people.

There's a lot of people who can't stand the Clinton's, but there's a lot of people who are very loyal to them. I'm in between, but I know one thing. I was payed more for the same job 10 years ago than I am payed now. I can't afford insurance. I can't afford my rent. And I'm not even poor, I'm middle-class. I'm not handing my vote over to anyone immediately, I'll let them fight it out. I think Hillary can handle it.

Regardless of who is the next president, Republican or Democrat, it can only go up from here, so cheer up folks, the long wait is ending, Bush is finally leaving. ANYTHING is better than him. Even Republicans are hearing the message of global warming now. Could it be we all have some needs in common?

I love how the lib-bots have been programmed by Moore-on.org.

If one says something negative about Hillary, then they are a sexist!!!

If one says something negative about Obama, then they are a racist!!!

Ask yourself why the libs do things like this? It is obvious that they don't want to debate, they want to silence anyone who is not marching lock step to their ideology by calling people sexist and racist. They don't want you to know that they are out to take away your freedoms and money with their quasi-socialism agenda.

When you hear the lib then talk about Craig, Rice, and Ann Coulter, you see that the words of homophobic, racist, and sexist that they try to call republicans and others who think for themselves, really applies to the lib more so than the people they are hating on for simply thinking for themsleves, which as the facts show is the most anti-liberal thing a person can do.

Hillary doesn't wear her religion on her shirt sleeve because that's reserved for her emotions..

David, Gilbert Arizona   December 18th, 2007 11:49 am ET

I don't have a problem with Hillary having friends that care about her. I don't have a problem with Hillary having a softer side either. What I do find disingenuous about this event is that Hillary has to make a public display of her softer side. That's what makes the entire episode appear contrived, that she held an event specifically to show she can cry on queue.

What I find most fake about the entire Hillary campaign is her supporters. I read post after post about Hillary's compassion and that she is a woman making history. That entire mindset is a crock when you compare Hillary Clinton with Elizabeth Dole.

Elizabeth has worked in two different administrations as Secretary of Transportation and as Secretary of Labor. Elizabeth has spent years advocating the Red Cross and Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Mrs. Dole is currently a Senator from North Carolina. If anyone has or had the most experience to be President of the United States it was Elizabeth Dole. And yet Mrs. Dole had to pull out of the race for President because of lack of support. So where were all the women wanting a woman president then? And you all decide to choose Hillary instead, that Hillary is a wonderful woman? How much further from the truth can you get?

You people touting a great woman president really missed the boat on that one. It makes the entire woman president argument comical to the point of hillarity.

Nita - SA - TX   December 18th, 2007 11:45 am ET

Leo you are absolutely right. "I am certainly no Hillary hater and I really don't like seeing these 'extreme' posts against her. All they do is make those who love her, love her even more." If you wish to get negative toward Hillary then show some evidence. Talk policies, issues, etc – yeah but not Obama. He's all scripted. Anyone but OBAMA. 2nd Choice – BIDEN.

HillaryNotAGoodIdeaForPrez   December 18th, 2007 11:40 am ET

Women, women, women. It's because she's a woman. I play basketball and I'll tell you that if you show emotion your opponent will attack that because they see that you're the weak link. I'll apply this to the elections, if you show emotions or show a sign of weakness you'll get attacked. Hillary she cried and tried to seem like an american Mother Teresa by saying "What I try to do every day is figure out how to help somebody,You can try to help somebody every single day, and I’ve tried to do that as a public servant, as an activist, and now as a senator." Foreign people (especially those Radical muslim fools that already have no respct for women) will see that she is the weak link if she shows weakness she lets the whole team down. Why because that leaves the team(America) open for attack.I'm not sexist I just don't think a woman is a good choice at this time, because of our present president at the time has made us enemies with the middle east.

Jose Card   December 18th, 2007 11:33 am ET

"What I try to do every day is figure out how to help somebody,” – Hillary.

That is the big problem. A president has to help the nation, not just somebody poor or a lobbyist.

Perhaps Hillary will do a great job working for Red Cross or being a first lady again.

Being a leader requires a clear and fair mind for all. Giving taxpayers' money away isn't helping. Helping somebody get off their feet and start walking again is real help.

If you don't have a vision for the country and you concentrate on individuals to help, you don't fit to be president. That is due to the lack of executive experience.

Hillary doesn't know the difference in job functions between the first lady and the president.

Hillary might have done her senate job the same way – helping somebody every day, and that may be the reason why she is not a significant senator. In essence, she doesn't know how to lead people.

Bill, Montgomery AL   December 18th, 2007 11:25 am ET

Surprising that from her college radical left origins Hillary is not vehement about immigration and industries moving their manufacturing operations to Asia. Immigration is all about exploitation and as a socialist Hillary should be speaking loudly about multinational corporations in the U.S. exploiting Mexicans and other Lations for low wage, no benefit, no retirement, jobs here in the U.S. That immigrants are pushing American economic status down and will lead ultimately to the povertization of the United States. Or maybe that is what Hillary wants- a worker's paradise where we are all working for meger wages of "the man" like in the former soviet states. The big box stores are the plantations of the new mellenium. We- white, yellow, black, and red are becoming the chattel of the corporate plantation owners.

I must admit, the republican administration will leave us one unforgettable legacy…the nasty and ugly division of this country that they have propogated. The comments of some of these folks are downright disgusting, and those people still seem to enjoy attacking "non-believers" with hateful comments. Remember the days when this country was at least attempting to work together? I've seen many postings claiming that "liberals" are the enemy! Now thatkind of comment is pathetic, and should be something to be VERY concerned about.

I think I'm forced to agree with Lisa (for the most part). I am a huge supporter of Senator Clinton and her husband, but can't seem to wrap my support around the "soft side" stuff. I'm sure she has a softer side, I'm just wishing it all wasn't so choreographed. Be yourself Hillary, that all we want.

Regarding Obama, there is nothing genuine about him. He wants to be President of the United States and isn't willing to pay his dues first. Don't buy the load of crap he's trying to sell.

Joan, Chicago IL   December 18th, 2007 9:50 am ET

Man, it gives me a chill to see what a chameleon this woman is. She'll be anything that she thinks anyone wants her to be, as long as she thinks it will help her agenda.

As much as I'd love a female president, I'm not willing to sacrifice integrity for gender in the next person sitting in the oval office. Those of you who are so hungry for a woman president, have you REALLY looked at her leadership skills? Is she REALLY the woman you want in the White House? Or are you simply willing to sacrifice everything else that is important for that position just to be able to say MADAM president?

Sure the campaign trail is tough – physically and emotionally. But does anyone think it's a coincidence that her tears come with a day or two of Obama catching her in the polls in Iowa?

Scary……..

Justin, NE   December 18th, 2007 9:50 am ET

"All over the world for a woman's intelligence and smartness is undervalued by society in different ways. Hillary suffers same reason. It's not she doesn't has soft side; matriarchal society hates women who tend to be strong.

Hillary is 200% times better than any democrat and republican but matters of her gender that's all.

Hillary for president'08!"

Is this English?^^

You know, it never stops! has any of you seen the footage? this is real, everyone of these candidates is stressed, tired and emotional. Sen. clinton has still to miss a vote in the senate, it is stomping every day, that takes a toll. have some respect too. this is not Jimmy Swaggart pleading to the congregation, this is a person that is loved by many and is thankful to see them out there for her. Incredible!

Posted By Danny G. Boca Raton, FL : December 17, 2007 5:18 pm

Danny, first of all, learn correct grammar, spelling and punctuation. Next, if you think ANY of these politicians (left AND right) care about you or your plights, you better pull your head out of the sand. They care about one thing – power. They want it and the only way to get it is to try and sucker us into voting for them. Hillary Clinton is as fake as Mitt Romney, etc., etc. Wake up and smell the coffee. This is a woman that will do anything to be POTUS.

The problem is the Hilary we know is the one that we don't support. The Hilary we know failed to read the National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq, yet still supported the war; now she claims if she had known then what she knows now she wouldn't have supported Bush's and Cheney's war. The Hilary we know keeps taking about 35 years of experience, yet she has served only one full term in office. If I used by husband's experience on my resume, I'd be automatically disqualified for consideration for submitting a fraudulent resume. The Hilary we know totally disregarded the United States Constitution when she voted for the Patriot Act–not once, but twice as she voted for its reauthorization. The Hilary we know talks about being a Washington insider which great influence; if that were the case, then why hasn't she used that influence to get the health care package veto overridden for America's poor children? Saying you have influence and demonstrating you have influence is like night and day. Obviously she doesn't have the influence to get any thing done. She's a junior Senator with nothing to show for year actual paltry few years in the Senate. She has big name recognition, but not for her work, but the work of her husband. So the Hilary we know we don't support.

There is no soft side to this micromanaging self centered woman. Her over controlling behaviour has almost everyone nervous, Many of us remember the missing Rose law firms records and the memory lapses to her firing the white house travel employees and having them immediately ejected off of white house property.

This is just pathetic. Does HRC think we are all complete idiots? She is being bashed (rightly so) for going super negative against Obama and has voters commenting on her coldness and viciousness. Then we have a campaign appearance designed SOLELY to show her "softer side" and she **gasp** namages to get "glassy eyed" way to ramp up those emotions!

To all of you who accuse some of us of being hateful and afraid of a woman in power:

I can only speak for myself – I'm one of those people who think Clinton is a fake and will say whatever she thinks will get her elected, rather than what she truly believes. But I don't HATE Clinton and I couldn't care less if our president is a man or a woman. I think she is a calculating politician, but I don't HATE her. I have my reservations about Obama and I'm not sure about Edwards. So I WANT to be enthusiastic about her running for president. I WANT to like her. I WANT to believe her and in her. But I have NO IDEA what she actually stands for. I don't know what side of the issues she's REALLY on.

Larry DeVito Mason NH   December 18th, 2007 8:09 am ET

This is getting ridiculous. Hillary and Bill continuing to talk out of both sides of their mouths, now getting teary-eyed, changing their slogans and talking points to suit the flavor of the day, which only underscores the fact that they do not have an honest and consistent set of principles. The tears are not only a ploy for sympathy but I believe a sure sign of panic.

Oh give me a break! Listen to the Clinton campaign hacks whine. This woman has done nothing but turn her attack politics (the same type she denounces) on other Democrats. Need I remind the Clinton camp about the utterly stupid remarks about Obama wanting to be president as a child. Talk about hate driven politics. Hillary Clinton is the queen of hate politics.

I actually use to like her (and still do like her husband to a certain extent as I voted for him twice). However, disagree with her stances on many different issues as well as her attitude. I don't buy her sudden show of emotion. It's all political theater.

Obama is a pany waist who doesn't know what the heck he is doing half the time. If he had any sense of how to run a country he would at least show up to vote. He has missed over 140 votes this year alone. Almost as many as Tim Johnson who had a medical emergency.

He skipped the Kyl-Liberman resolution and then panned especially Hillary Clinton for voting. If it was such an important issue why in the devil didn't he show up to vote. Why didn't he show up to vote to give the military more time between deployments. Why didn't he show up to vote for more health benefits for military.

Oh but this is the guy who give speeches about what he is going to do for America. When he can't even vote to do that what in the devil would he do as president.

freetobeme, Rochester, PA   December 18th, 2007 7:40 am ET

This is a woman whose campaign has become increasingly negative and dirty the more her rivals have gained on her. And yet, she wants us to believe that she is a warm and loving person who genuinely cares about us. As for her statement that every day she tries to find someone to help, that sounds more realistic of this candidate with an unpleasant socialist bent. Nearly every politician (except Ron Paul) thinks that sticking his/her nose into my business is helping me. No thanks. I can help myself. Just let me have my freedom, Government. And then GO AWAY!

Frank tulsa, ok   December 18th, 2007 7:37 am ET

It's too bad that politicians have to resort the this stuff to placate a schizophrenic country. Does America want to see a softer side of anyone? Look at all the leaders of this world, who's got the softest side. Putin? Chavez? Castro? Cowboy wannabe Bush? Wannabe hunter Cheney? Kim Jong is Ill? Hu Jintao? Sarkozy? Musharraf?

Who's the softy folks? And who's the real softy among all of our candidates? It's interesting that we demand that the men be hardcore but the women had to have a 'softer side'? Margaret Thatcher was put into office because she was a tough old bird that didn't take crap from the male elite. But if Hillary does this, she's too hard.

Boy the campaign really played into the hands of the Repubs on this one. Before she was too hardcore, now she's too emotional and unstable. I hope it is staged for their sake, that way if she has to fake tears she's considered hardcore just like cowboy George and his sidekick Barney Fife.

Thanks, Joel of Tacoma WA, for reminding us of red-letter Bibles. Too many people calling themselves Christians don't want to read or hear the words of Christ's teachings because they center on tolerance, forgiveness, and love, when they much prefer the intolerance and bigotry of the Old Testament and the writings of Paul. Living as Christ taught is the very essence of living a Christian life.

And mostly she's trying to help herself to your hard earned cash.

She's a better actress than I thought she might be, maybe there a future here for politicians going to Hollywood instead of actors going to the White House.

most of the Obamamaniacs and Republicans on this comment board are simply idiots. Here is the first viable female candidate, and the last thing she would do strategically is to let anyone see her cry because inevitably for a woman, that equals weakness. Now you're accusing her of crocodile tears even if tears counter her own strategy. The Double Standards for women never ever stop. If Obama, Rudy teared up, we'd all go – awww, how warm and fuzzy. A woman cries and she's weak of contrived. Certainly this campaign is making me see all the sexism rear its ugly head (from men and women alike).

I don't particularly care for Hilary, but i respect what she has done over the years, especially her work behind the scenes during her husband's term. However I must say that being over-emotional in the public's eye will do more to hurt her campaign than to help it. I'm not speaking of my own beliefs, but one of the major reasons some US citizens oppose a woman commander and chief is the question of whether they will be emotionally stable enough to run a country. On a personal note, I believe this country's leader has shown enough weakness in the past eight years. Im ready for somebody who is tough on the big issues, not somebody with a sob story. I would rather see a leader let out a rebel yell than cry at the podium, but that's just me. Dry your eye Hillary.

Ross Lippincott; Davenport Iowa.   December 18th, 2007 4:07 am ET

I can't imagine Hillary would be under this intense scrutiny is she were not a woman. Her legs, her laugh, her hair, her makeup. She is not liked because of one fact and that is because she is a woman trying to run for the most powerful office in the world. People would be called bigots and banned from speaking publicly ever again if Obama were scrutinized because of his race. I could respect people alot more if they just came right out and said they personally don't want a woman in the White House instead of launching criticism about everything the woman does.

If she blew her nose in public people would say that she is trying to make people think she is sick to get sympathy votes. Why can't people just give her credit for BEING A POLITICIAN. A politician is a job. It's not easy. It's hard and like it or not it's a very nasty dirty business. Some people really make me think that they believe politicians are planting flowers in a nursery.

Give Hillary a fair shake sheesh!

The comments I am reading in this post are beyond insensitive. How can you all say such horrible things about a woman you've never even met? Do you know Hillary? Do you know that she was pretending to feel touched by her friends kind words as a political ploy? Unless you do know Hillary and can personally vouch for the fact that she is all of these evil things you all say she is, please take a minute and put yourself in her shoes, or Barack's shoes, or any politicians shoes for that matter. How would you feel if people you had never met were saying horrible things about you?

People knock Hillary for reasons they are unsure of just to knock her without any substantiated evidence. At least consider the fact that she is human and as much as the media portrays her as a so called "ice queen" she has feelings. Please consider the hateful things you say about people you don't know before you post them.

I think mrs. clinton is 'crying' because she knows the first domino is falling in her failing campaign. For those who wonder about her 8 yrs. experience, go to bill clinton's autobiography where he gives her credit for NOTHING! I wonder why? And, can anyone tell me one thing, just one thing she has done 'for the children'? What children? She's campaigning on the same stuff he did. She has a nerve still promising universal health care. You'd think the words would choke her coming out of her lying mouth.

Rocky N. Roll   December 18th, 2007 3:24 am ET

"What I try to do every day is figure out how to help somebody,” she says… "somebody" meaning herself and herself alone. We "commoners" see right through this phony, pathetic, shameless, desperate attempt to "win" by any means (Clinton playbook: If bloated self-aggrandizement doesn't work, move on to baseless attacks and whisper campaigns agains opponents, and if that fails, try the pity card or self-humiliation). "The most enjoyable aspect of watching the HMS Hillary take on water is the prospect that Bill — and his cult of personality — will go down with the ship too." Presidents can't cry!… not unless another president has died, that's the ONLY reason why!
You can't cry for wanting to help people. You're going to have to do that everyday and not brag about it when you're president. What's gonna happen when Hillary meets with these foreign dictators, whom she said that she would meet with (before attacking Obama for saying the same exact thing), and she doesn't get her way? Is Hillary going to solve the problem and appease the nation by crying about it?

jenna jonz   December 18th, 2007 3:22 am ET

The wife of the former impeached president's problem isn't that we don't know her. It's that we know her all too well!

Trang, Fremont, CA   December 18th, 2007 3:21 am ET

Yes, I know it hurts Hillary. Spending most of your life in public service, starting out on top (due to your connection w/ Bill Clinton), but keep seeing your poll numbers going down, it gotta hurt. And worse, losing to a young guy – who you think are 'naive and inexperience', not some 'experienced' guy like Joe Biden, it gotta hurt.

The mood of the country has changed. After so much beating from 'Bush' and seeing our own country falling apart, we want a 'uniter'. How can you unite the country when you keep attacking Bush and the Republicans? What's the use of attacking Bush – he's not running anymore. What's the use of attacking Republicans – you will have to work with them. I am also concerned with your response to the Iran situation. You said the reason you label them 'terrorists' is you want to increase diplomacy. How does that work? Anyone who gives a response like that, I probably said – 'Are you crazy? Are you insane? Can you think logically?

I usually don't attack people like this, but if you are thinking of leading this country, I have to raise these questions. Yes, your vote for Iran speaks volumes about your diplomatic skills and your understanding of foreign countries and how to deal with them. It has nothing to do with you being a woman. It's about you making poor decisions, and we have plenty of that from Bush.

IHNCNH   December 18th, 2007 2:51 am ET

I would just like to say that anybody who votes for Hillary is obviously disillusioned, most likely racist, and DEFINITELY voted for Geroge "Dubya" Bush.

You are disillusioned because she is full of untruthful, inconsistent rhetoric. For her supporters, you can't see through that because you are so shallow minded and naive.

You are racist because Barack Obama is clearly the RIGHT choice for America and he is what we need to restore what we have lost due to the past 20 years of the same reign in our government. If you have forgotten I'll show you… Reagan & Bush, Bush, Clinton, Clinton, Bush, Bush…Clinton? How about someone new, someone that's NOT WHITE? This is coming from a caucasian male just so you know.

Third, yes, you, YOU VOTED FOR DUBYA DIDNT YOU? DON'T LIE TO THE PEOPLE AND ACT LIKE YOU DIDN'T.

Have you morons who support Hillary not seen Bush's endorsement? Have you not clearly seen the family ties that the Bushs and Clintons now have? At my alma-mater, they performed the commencement speeh at graduation together. They attend eventstogether, they work together. I'm 24 years old and I see this. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? It is people like you, the Hillary Clinton supporters, that make the life of my generation and generations to come unthinkable. But I guess that it doesn't matter because you won't be around to see it. WE WILL.

As soon as he realized the camera was on him, he turned somber again. She has learned well form him to play the camera and the crowd.

Softer image like softer toilet paper. When are Americans going to wise up, this woman is a fraud.

Cosmo Dallas, TX   December 18th, 2007 2:12 am ET

This was a staged event so she could cry. All scripted and well planned. I know, I work for one of these idiots running for president, every word, every thought, every emotion is thought out and rehearsed and ran through legal. It was an act. Just like her and bills marriage. Although, I believe you will see the real tears when she gets sent back to the senate .

MJF, Rochester, NY   December 18th, 2007 1:56 am ET

Oh, come on…Hillary is very used to these types of displays when needed. There is more news out there than this–yes?

Ed Steubenville ohio   December 18th, 2007 1:43 am ET

Any candidate who stoops to dirty politics can't be in the running because they care about people. This woman only cares about herself and not only is she phony, but she is very insulting as well.

THIS is the Hillary I know:
http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSN1742856620071218?pageNumber=3&virtualBrandChannel=0

After Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney got teary-eyed while talking about when his Mormon church opened its doors to black Americans, an MSNBC interviewer asked Clinton if she ever teared up. Clinton laughed off the question.
"Well, you know, when I had to get up at 4 o'clock in the morning in Des Moines I teared up," she said.

Enough said…THIS is the Hillary I Know.

I believe her tears were real. A good actor can produce tears because they're very talented at pretending. Ms Clinton produced real tears because she's come to realize that there are not as many people in America who think much of her as she thought. Someone, some place, talked her into running and she jumped into the race and how doesn't have the guts to say to hell with you all, and go home. No, I don't everybody hates her, their are just alot of people that don't like her, or her hubby. It's just like when someone says they don't think queers are normal, the Clintonites call you hateful. Nobody hates someone they don't know, they just don't like them. It's the Clinton culture that has created the divisiveness in the country.

Why is anyone surprised by this?

She and her intern chasing husband decided while enjoying Bubba's fraudulanty obtained draft deferment that they were better than the rest of us. Once bubba's days were numbered it was decided that Hillary would be next, following crazy Al's term in office. Crazy Al's loss only strengthened her resolve.

Now, poor Hil is losing her shot at what she has "worked" for all these years. How pathetic. She is the most ruthless, cowardly, shameless person running. Only her husband is has less shame. The disbarred, lying, adultering, "I feel your pain" has come out with both guns a blazin' to help her now that the truth is out.

Anyone criticizing Edwards $400 haircut needs to remember bubba shutting down a runway at LAX for a stylish, Hollywood do while President.

Why isn't anyone talking about the travel office, or the stock schemes, or the fact that she refuses to release her "files" from the Whitehouse.

In Bubba's heart of hearts he wants to see Hil lose. he can't stand the fact that if elected, she would get more press than him. That would interfere with his $100K speaches allowing him to re-write history. And we can't have that….

Sorry. I don't want a weepy president who cries when she doesn't get her way. I doubt our enemies would be sympathetic – why should we. If you want to be president, be prepared to fight for it – it won't be handed to you. She needs to heed the words of another democratic president: Truman.

'If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen'.

Just like 'There's no crying in Baseball", there's no crying in running for president'.

Does Hillary really believe in "capitalism with a human face"? Is she really going to dissociate from her old neo-liberal and neo-conservative buddies who promote such outrages as privatized water in Bolivia>? Did she ever comment on what she learned and how she differed from Melvin Laird Republican congressman and one time National Chairman of Republicans whom she worked for? In the Senate has she ever demanded rules for labor rights before approving NAFTA agreements? This is really important, not how many family members are sitting on her lap.
We need to get into the spirit of I.F Stone and investigate real issues.

William Courtland, Waterford, Ontario   December 17th, 2007 11:59 pm ET

I know that the party system is like the comforter that surrounds you when you wake up, but one can not get anything done while remaining in bed.

The party system is not constitutional.

Looking down you realize that the comforter is the flag of your country. Not a sense of pride, but a token of commercial interest meant to designate your ship for identification when visiting foreign ports of call when meeting the harbormaster.

Change…

Why use that word when the changes will be based on causality as time provides, options as they have always been, and just a switch of the party label.

The democratic governments of the world are currently afflicted with multiple personality disorder due to the party system.

As the partied Governments can not fully function at the highest capacity the money markets now exist in debt; this while The Governments elected officials still gain employ and payment from the federal treasuries and the tax payer, yet the government is equally incompetent due to the party system as any individual ruled in the mind by a multiple personality disorder; they could not manage full function at a high demand work station and it is the same with the governing body.

I declare those individuals found of the party system unfit for rule and further declare the world democratic government without confidence.

Those who hold debt while the currency is also in debt hold a positive in mathematics. To prove confidence the stock market must be reigned to understand and control a stock keeping unit which is purchased for wholesale exchange or consumer sale, while that stock market is separated from a market system which handles the flow of capital investment.

It seems those of the party’s should alter the American flags they bear, sure maybe keep the colors the same, and avoid the look of France’s or Italy’s; imagine electing representatives: the ass or the elephant and how they would treat an individual’s viewpoint.

What animal did the federalists hold? The lion? Maybe a dragon? or just a nation united?

Ok. There are plenty reasons reasonable people dislike the Clintons. They absolutely sell-out every progressive cause they supposedly stand for and have never met an ill-gotten gain they didn't love. This latest stunt is additionally disgusting because the Clintons personally went after and destroyed the character of people brave enough to come forward against Slick Willie's sexual harrassment. To think that she's being attacked because she's a woman is ridiculous. She is where she is only because she's woman. There is no reason why she's the best candidate. It's only perception by people who take things at the superficial. And this add is for them. I'm hoping it won't work but it probably will given how I never thought voters would stoop so low to put these vipers back in the White House. I'm a democrat and I won't vote for HRC if she gets the nomination. GO ANYONE ELSE!

Erik, Bowie, MD   December 17th, 2007 11:52 pm ET

Isn't it a bit transparent to have your campaign telegraph that an event is designed to show a "softer side" of your candidate and then have your candidate tear up at the event? What is this designed to showcase, that Hillary can cry on cue? Get that woman an Oscar! Yeah, and I'm still not voting for her. What a load of bull.

Stop criticizing Bill Clinton for speaking up for his wife. All the other candidate's spouses (Mrs. Edwards, Mrs. Obama) put in their two cents and they were not as kind as Bill Clinton was. And I don't think you could call what he said about Obama's readiness (or lack thereof) as an "attack!" Jack, your bias is showing. Calm down.

Robert Vitaletti, Denver, Colorado   December 17th, 2007 11:28 pm ET

It was announced earlier in the day that Clinton would embark on an campaign to up her positives and show her "softer side." Later this very same day she is at an event where she becomes "visibly emotional." Could this have possibly been scripted? Please, there is no wonder why people have become cynical about politicians. Manipulating tender human emotions in this way to gain a political advantage is abhorrent and twisted. It may deserve an Oscar, but not the presidency. Shame on you Hillary.

By Susan Page, USA TODAY
WASHINGTON — Democratic voters increasingly are focused on nominating the most electable presidential candidate, a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll finds, and Illinois Sen. Barack Obama fares better than New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton against prospective Republican rivals.

Anyone who says Clinton is more electable than Obama is uninformed, in denial, or is simply a liar.

Every Opera needs a little bit of Pathos to get the audience involved!

Is Huma Abedin, her so called 'girlfriend', featured in the website? Was she there on stage?

The writer's strike is just a great time for politicians, all of that talent available to them, and when they're not already busy and flush with cash, why not put them to work?

Ash, New Orleans, LA   December 17th, 2007 11:07 pm ET

Among current candidates, Hilary Clinton seems to be relatively more polarizing than others. Thus it seems that it would be hard to attract independent voters in her case. This is one important reason which makes her undesirable, given today's Washington climat, every one is looking for a candidate who will unite, and heal. She was asked in last debate about her secracy surrounding her health case proposal (as a first lady). Once again she is not forth coming on issues, takes multiple positions. These are serious issues.

She has to make up her mind is she candidate having most experience, or now a candidate for change or both!
She should realize today's voter has lot more exposure to electronic media, TV, internet etc and cannot be taken for granted. One can quickly see who is genuine. She is willing to say what ever is currently desirable, i.e. serious conviction on issues seems to be missing. Clintons want 8 more years in the White House. They are yet to make a compelling case why all other fine candidates should be discarded. Biden, Dodd, Richardson have unmatched experience; Edward is progressive and truthful, and Obama is sincere, articulate, forward thinking, a candidate of dynamic change.

Why don't you aging pot-heads step aside and let someone younger and more sober take the wheel.

She's a true blue Democrat, so we know the programs that will be proposed. Of course, none of it will pass the votes needed. Hillary is never going to win with some of you. If she's strong and confident she's called "cold" but if she shows her softer side she's considered a fake. I am sure that her lifelong friends know a side that the media and nation at large does not know. I believe that is true for all public figures. I also believe that the media can create bias just in the way they report stories and the stories they choose to report. I met Senator Clinton when she visited my state a few months ago, and she was very warm, friendly and interested in connecting with the people in the crowd. She took extra time to sign autographs, take photos with people, and talk to everyone who wanted to talk to her, which really impressed me.

It Is beyond me how anyone could vote for a President who's job It Is to protect our nation because he's refreshing . People better wake up and look at who they are voting for. No longer do we live in a peaceful world, or safe country, its turned to be nations of some of the most corrupt leaders alive. I'm not sure any Persident we elect can restrain the likes of Iran ,Russia and North Korea just to name a few. Every terrorist group imaginable would be gunning for the U.S. with a inexperienced President, and frankly I don't feel comfortable with a man who has only two years of political experience under his belt. This is not the time are place to put Senator Obama as commander and chief with such hostile surroundings because Oprah finds him different and exhilarating. I'm not saying our next President will always make the right decisions, but we better have someone with a little grit and nerves of steel to combat all the inevitable disasters that we will encounter. And believe me its not if, its when and how. We better not gamble our future on the Obama and Oprah ticket.

Hillary gets emotional? ho ho ha ha ha. She must have learned that from Bill. Has anyone forgotten the crocodile tears that accompanied the proclamation : "I never had any sexual relationship with that woman, Ms …."?

Are we so dumb to even consider this woman for presidency? I'd rather have Chelsea as president than have this woman as a vice-president. The thing is that Hillary wants this too desperately that she would stop at nothing. I can't wait to see the look on her face when she finally realizes that Americans know what they want in their president. I can't wait to watch her see reality dawn on her. Americans deserve better than trick stars.

Hillary is the greatest, period. All the others combined wouldn't be half as good as she is. But having said all that, this is (mostly) fake. No denying it. Yeah she's a real human with real feelings, but real feelings aren't displayed at the whims of political campaigning.

"No using "the gender card" going on here…………."
I can't for the life of me see why any man(i.e. male) would vote for either Clinton. Bill is obviously ruled by women and caters to them all the time. Hillary surrounds herself with women relatives and friends and is very empathetic only to the needs of women. They are both, in fact, very male hostile and 'traditional family' hostile. The do nothing to support men and everything to disenfranchise and subordinate them. What kind of guy votes for this? I'd really like to know!

How in heavens name did this "story " make it to the top of the Ticker? Can on CNN put the real news first. Ron Paul raised a record amount of money today and he isn't even considered a top tier candidate. Hillary forces out a few fake tears and it is headline news. The big news this story tells is how divisive she is. About 2/3 of the comments are "get real" lady and the other 1/3 are "We love you Hillary"juck. About half the people in her own party hate her. You ask why;
She has no meaningful position on anything.
She changes her mind as the polls go. She plays dirty politics to win.
She has so many questionable contributors.
She is surrounded with scandal, both personal and financial.
The Republican will eat her alive.
I am a woman and a Democrat but I can not under any circumstances support her. I would love to tell my granddaughter about voting for the first woman ever to be the President of the United States but I would have to explain how I did that while holding my nose. It is not her time, not now or ever.

Jesse, Burnsville, MN   December 17th, 2007 9:26 pm ET

John Petty in Aurora,

I have been a Democrat my whole life and I will NEVER, AND I MEAN EVER, vote for Hillary Clinton. And don't you try to guilt me into doing it should she win the nomination. I won't vote for the Republican, and I won't vote for Republican-Lite (Hillary).

If my fellow Democrats are dumb enough to nominate her, then they are the ones that must deal with the guilt of having a Republican as our next President. Don't blame the rest of us that warned you!

Not only would she lose in the general election, but she will galvanize the Republican party like no other. You will see Democrats losing everywhere.

from her actions it appears as if that helping tends to be herself.

So what? Ron Paul raised 6 million in one day. CNN even covered it…and now they must bury it ASAP with stories about Clinton's fake tears.

Allan   December 17th, 2007 9:10 pm ET

I find it funny to notice when male politicians like Obama and Edwards throw negative remarks, show tears and emotions, share religious ideas, admit to drug dependence in the past – its all good and fair under the sun. but when a female politician like Hillary does all these, its fake! Unfair to female lot don't you think. Hillary please be patient. You would notice all Obama and Edwards fans spend their time on any Hillary discussion. Its very obvious! Hillary will win.

Scott, Ohio   December 17th, 2007 9:08 pm ET

Whoa, whoa, whoa…how many of the people who wrote in "support" comments are joking or being sarcastic? I can't tell, some of them seem serious.

But anyway, after cleaning the puke off my computer, I'm going to have to agree with the majority of posters…the Clinton campaign is a joke and I find it amazing that people have bought into this. She stands for NOTHING! I mean what the heck do people see in her other than a person who wants to be president? She and Guiliani are the most evil, self-centered people in this race, yet somehow people buy into their campaigns. The polls are about inverse of what they should be…Ron Paul (genuine, trustworthy, man of the people, much more intelligent than media makes him out to be) is #1 then Joe Biden (another authentic guy), John Edwards (as passionate as I am about pointing out to the people what a huge mistake Clinton is), Obama, Richardson, McCain, Dodd, Romney, Thompson, …, Guiliani, Clinton.

Michelle D. - Atlanta, GA   December 17th, 2007 9:08 pm ET

Just what we DON'T want to see. Must be the PMS. I guess she's taking her cue from Mitt Romney after his interview w/Tim Russert on Sunday.

Did we ever see Maggie Thatcher crying? Is THIS what we want in a leader? I think not.

I am a Dem. I am a Christian. I am a woman. I am a mother. I am a hardworking taxpayer and I'm STILL voting for EDWARDS.

Marcus, Dallas TX   December 17th, 2007 9:07 pm ET

HEY!! WHAT ARE YOU DOIN'! THERE'S NO CRYIN' IN POLITICS!!!

AJ, IL   December 17th, 2007 9:06 pm ET

Hillary showing a softer side? Hmmm…first Romney is crying and now Hillary is crying. Sorry folks, these two are not presidential.

Hillary has gone from Iron Maiden to Experience Champion to Agent of Change and now to her latest transformation, the Emotional Candidate. Each transformation was to get more support according to poll numbers.

This is so political of Hillary it makes me MAD! Do people actually believe the B.S. that is being thrown at them? Sorry, Hillary you can't fool me. You didn't publicly tear up when Bill was caught in one of his many public infidelity cases.

Dottie Dot Stillwater Minnesota   December 17th, 2007 8:58 pm ET

Honestly — WHO CARES? Why is she front & center again when the public is clearly crying out for change. Why isn't Ron Paul's fundraising on page 1?

Tom, Detroit, MI   December 17th, 2007 8:54 pm ET

I don't think she cried that much when Bill cheated on her.
—————-
Hillary is the best candidate for the Presidency. She is certainly the best candidate to finally represent American women! Experience does count. Many can talk about change but they have no way to back it up. Hillary can get the job done!

—————–
Yeah because she accomplished something with health care when she was tasked with it.

Thomas, Detroit, mI   December 17th, 2007 8:51 pm ET

Why is she crying is she holding an onion?

Mari Fernandez, Salt Lake City, UT   December 17th, 2007 8:47 pm ET

I want change just like everyone else. BUT its not Hillary, folks! The tears, emotions, all that is an act. She is losing, her attacks are backfiring. I couldn't believe the change in her voice. I voted for Bill, but will not for Hillary. YES, I would love to see a woman president…… not Hillary!

I am hoping for an Edwards/Obama ticket. Iowans please take a good long look at everyone. Decided wisely.

Mia, Stafford, VA   December 17th, 2007 8:47 pm ET

GIVE ME A BREAK!

If you friends and family won't support you who would. Why is that something to tear up about, if a Republican who has been hate-mongering on the Clintons for the last decade came out, say somebody like Karl Rove, then she may want to tear up.

She is so PHONY!

Libertarian   December 17th, 2007 8:42 pm ET

Allen, New York, NY   December 17th, 2007 8:39 pm ET

I really don't see why we have to call each other stupid, morons, sad, pathetic people just because we see candidates differently and have different views on what kind of person we want as president. I do not personally support Hillary but she has every right to run for president and obviously a lot of people support her. Is that such a terrible thing? A woman president would be historic, as would an African American president. John Edwards gets an expensive haircut and he is subject to ridicule. Who's being shallow there?

Maybe instead of expecting Hillary or anyone else to unite us we ought to work a little harder at it ourselves.

Terry, Los Angeles, CA   December 17th, 2007 8:38 pm ET

Everyone seems to think Hillary "wants" to be president. Is there anyone in this race who doesn't want to be president? If so, GET OUT. Wanting a job and working hard for it is a good thing. People like Obama for the same reasons they liked Bush 2 – on some level they feel sorry for the poor vulnerable candidate and they want to "save" him from the wolves by throwing them support and votes. Look what happened last time everyone felt sorry for a candidate.

Dave   December 17th, 2007 8:36 pm ET

This explains everything:

"designed to showcase a softer side of the New York senator."

Key word: designed.

O.A.   December 17th, 2007 8:29 pm ET

The truth is all you Clinton supporters know in your heart that this latest stunt is a charade. You may keep supporting her, but when her campaign announces that she is going to show her softer side, and she starts crying thats a load of crap. She crys and another one of her aides will call Obama a drug dealer, or some other sterotype of black men and then resign. She says she is for blacks but the fact that she plays into those stereotypes shows she really is not.

Another New Yorker for Obama   December 17th, 2007 8:27 pm ET

I am a NY resident. In her years in the Senate, Miss Hillary has not done a thing for this state. When I have tried to get her office to get behind some important issues in this state that were disproportionately harming women and children, Miss Hillary was not interested.

She is no friend to women, to blacks, and I will NEVER vote for her. She has had her time, and as far as I can see, she's done ZERO with her opportunities.

I read something yesterday which wisely questioned what Miss Hillary did to help the dismal public education system when she was First Lazy! She sent Chelsea to private school. Hmmm.

I have had enough of this nonsense. I've voted for 1 Republican my whole life, but if Miss Hillary is our candidate, it will be my second vote (for a Republican).

But, I am confident we have a contender–someone outside the old okey doke and that is Obama. The man has vision, passionate and you know he'll work every day of his life for the people. Americans haven't had that kind of representative to my recollection. But I'm ready. My vote is for the Great White Hope-Barack Obama!!!!

Peter Luster, Indianapolis, Indiana   December 17th, 2007 8:27 pm ET

When use as a 'plan'–an event to show a softer side of a person- it really speaks to something really fake about Hillary, This is exactly her problem–Way to calculating!

You'll notice that many of these people are here from a lead article in the Huffington Post, a rabid center of anti-Hillary feeling on the "progressive" side. Sounds a lot like Limbaugh. Funny how Obama supporters react with ferocity at the slightest criticism — call it "negative campaigning," — and yet they slander Hillary all the time.

Julian, Port-of-Spain Trinidad and Tobago   December 17th, 2007 8:21 pm ET

Are u kidding me? I may not be a Clinton supporter…but this is depressing. Tearing up just as you launch a new website to showcase the softer Hilary. Some genius from the Clinton camp is about to get fired again. This appears as real as Santa Claus. Mrs. Clinton is now officially the embodiment of the Stepford Politician.

columbus, Olivette, MO   December 17th, 2007 8:21 pm ET

No Hillary – this is sad! Your advisers and strategists are letting you down. I mean – be proud of the person you are. Obama is Obama, Edwards is Edwards! What is this silliness that you have to shed tears to show that you're human and likeable. This makes you lose votes. I can't imagine casting a vote for a candidate who is so micromanaged to this extent. You don't have to go through this mental turmoil to please the voters. It will not change anything. Just be yourself!

Janie, Raleigh, N.C.   December 17th, 2007 8:20 pm ET

My friends, my husband and my sons are strong supporters of Senator Clinton. It appears their are some in cable news who have a personal vendettal against Hillary. For example, Chris Matthew has attacked her every night for months. If some of his guests defend her, the never appear on his show again. Today, Cnn was doing some of the same. Carl Berstein was criticizing her on the Lou Dobbs show. John King is usually fair but even he was getting a bit nasty tonight. Barack Obama is not ready to be our President and it seems the media is trying to shove him down our throats. I will sit out the election is Obama is able to get the nomination. Any of the other candidates on the Democratic side are better than he. He is getting a free pass from the press. They must fear they will be called racists, but they have no fear that they will be called sexist. Their attacks about Hillary laugh and her tone are clearly sexists criticisms. Shame. Shame. Remember folks this media is the same crowd that played up George W. Bush as a good drinking buddy and that Saddan had WMD>

I find Hillary an amazing woman. She can be tough when needs to be but also shows the warm caring person she really is. It's unfortunate that if she is tough she's an "iron maiden". If a man shows toughness……he has courage. Again, the double standard is still around.

Larry   December 17th, 2007 8:14 pm ET

Hillary is a joke. The dems are in for a spanking come election time if this is the best they have to nominate. Let me rephrase that, – if Hillary is the nominee, and not a candidate like Biden, then the dems are in for a slaughter.

P.S. Whats with the people posting who actually "talk" to Hillary? Do you think she actually reads this, and will write you back?

Kimmy   December 17th, 2007 8:13 pm ET

Wow… to all those Hillary lovers… you are insane to think that she would be our next president, if she did become our next president we know the world is coming to a an end… and very soon. She 's so ridiculous and polarizing. When she is passionate about something it just comes out as anger or bitterness, or as we saw… fake tears. Nice one Hillary no one bought it!!!

She shouldn't have to work this hard to convince people she's personable. If she thinks that people are going to fall for a stunt like this she's crazy.

It's times like these where I wish the writers strike would end so Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert can show this on Comedy Central because that's where it belongs.

Mike, Montreal, Quebec   December 17th, 2007 8:03 pm ET

It seems that you will not be voting for Hillary as President any more but "Bill". He has now stepped up and is on the offensive. In 1992 Hillary was baking cookies. In 2008 Bill should be shovelling the driveway.
It is clear that if Hill gets to the White House it is Bill who will be master of the house.

Sean, Portland, OR   December 17th, 2007 8:03 pm ET

Man, Billary will do absolutely anything to manipulate people. At least when Bill did it he was a good enough liar to make it look real. God help us Dems if she wins the nomination.

Erika Columbus, Ohio   December 17th, 2007 7:58 pm ET

Authenticity….that's what the American people have been asking for in a president for the last 8 years. This is truly disappointing that HRC is LOSING her character in order to GAIN respect and votes. Although I respected the Clinton's in the 1990's, It is time to turn the page to a new chapter in American politics and ideologies. Frankly, HRC needs to get off the coat tails of Bill, and tell the american people WHAT EXACTLY IS YOUR 35 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE?

For many reason's the old establishment candidate is not working.

Obama through this entire process has not forgotting his values or character, and that is something the American People can appreciate more than anything else.

Claude calgary tx   December 17th, 2007 7:57 pm ET

Leo, Mesa Arizona   December 17th, 2007 7:55 pm ET

I am certainly no Hillary hater and I really don't like seeing these 'extreme' posts against her. All they do is make those who love her, love her even more. If you wish to get negative toward Hillary then show some evidence. Talk policies, issues, etc. On the other hand, those Obama haters really need to take a look at Hillary's opponent. He's no dummy. Obama and his wife are Harvard grads and very dedicated and intelligent. He's a very good speaker too. At least investigate his record before making a rash decision. Go to barackobama website and read about this man and the life he has built. Obama is truly a good man, and what this would do to all people who scream 'racism' or 'prejudice'! This is an incredible opportunity to put our differences aside and give this devoted and knowlegeable man a chance to run for president. GO OBAMA!!! Thank you.

Gail, Novato, CA   December 17th, 2007 7:53 pm ET

I'm really impressed with the coordinated assault on Hillary. I've concluded it is a combination of Obama supporters and Republicans who are scared to death that their candidate will have to face Hillary. The Obama campaign is in full throated attack on Hillary so Barack can take the high road while his internet team takes the low road. Shame on you.

Sen. Clinton is 60 years old…it's ridiculous that her mother and friends are having to "prove" how warm, nice, and tender-hearted she is.

A sixty year old woman should never have to explain her softer side. If she had one, it would show.

Marti, Plano, TX   December 17th, 2007 7:46 pm ET

Typical sexist junk. None of the men running for president have to show their softer side.

William, South Amboy, NJ   December 17th, 2007 7:45 pm ET

This morning on CNN, Kiran Chetry asked Hilary Clinton "What makes you get teary?" in reference to Obama getting teary-eyed during a recent campaign stop.

So are we supposed to believe this is just a coincidence from someone who is so calculated?? If so the American people are as dumb as I feared.

Rob Houston, TX   December 17th, 2007 7:43 pm ET

I am not even an American but I couldn't agree more that Sen. Clinton has been seen more as a "politician" than a "public servant" these past few caucuses/meetings. I work in the outsourcing business and it really worries me that when "she" gets to be the Democratic Presidential candidate and she wins, that she might start taking back offshore business back to the US. I really hope she looks at things on a more economic perspective, more savings for US companies means more business expansions back there home for you guys! I'm sure she has her reasons but it is just not that clear for us who work in this business back here in the Philippines, or other major "outsourcing" countries out there.

HRH has a reputation that she has 'earned' ever since she has been in public life. No testimonials from so-called inside the family will erase the written, documented record. HRH is a nasty woman. It is well known. It is what it is. The folks know it. And will vote accordingly. An earned response to her dealings.

Janet, Fairbanks Alaska   December 17th, 2007 7:36 pm ET

I grow weary (I am being charitable to many of the previous posters)… I grow weary of the constant Hillary bashing by everyone, Democrat and Repub alike, and would be far more surprised were it not for the rampant misogynistic tendencies in general and the media in particular… of course, I understand, its been a historical pattern in US ever since women were jailed for attempting to vote prior to the 19th Amendment…Just a bit sad such 'fear and loathing' continues unabated. It is a real pity that in our current climate of chest beating and crotch scratching machismo posturing on the domestic and international theaters and presence that we remain unable (should that be unwilling?) to discuss a candidate’s potential in an election or ‘job’ without stooping to 3rd grade school like references by embracing embarrassing “cooties, appearance, hair or aftershave”. Just remember a country and its citizenry frequently get “Not only the representative they want but what they deserve”… I for one will vote for Hillary because she represents what we need, strength, ability, skill and capability… we do not need what we deserve (by way of our infantile prattle) which I a liken much more to what we now, sadly, seem to have.

Hillary Clinton has proven herself to be an exceptionally good and decent woman. Her only real problem is she is a woman and the woman haters do not want her to be President. They will do all they can to prevent that from happening. She will do it anyway.

I'm enough of a human being to see something very good there. I am very proud to say that I love Hillary Clinton. I will vote for her in spite of all the hillaryhatist sickness running around.

My god, I think she'll do *anything* to get elected. What a train wreck. This sociopath, with a string of illegal activities trailing her like a bride’s trestle, wants to be President? Let’s see the cattle futures, the missing Whitehouse records (found a year later with her fingerprints all over them), plenty of shady business deals, the current crop of minimum wage dishwashers being used to funnel in Indian and Chinese donations, the underhanded campaign tactics questioning the Christianity of Barak Obama, the use of surrogates to spread slander and lies, her awful support of outsourcing American jobs, her aiding companies in hiring Guest workers that displace older American workers (especially using the H1-B visa), the constant denigrating of males, the underhanded racist asides, and on and on. I am a Democrat, but I would vote for Bush before Clinton. What a sad piece of work she and Billy are

James, Mountain View, CA   December 17th, 2007 7:25 pm ET

Of course it's a staged campaign moment! If Hillary wasn't caught in the terrible grip of the sexist paradox, she wouldn't have to do this kind of event. If you listen to the pundits, Hillary's either a cold-hearted political machine or a weak-kneed woman without the toughness to protect our country.

Could it be the truth is somewhere in between? That's my guess, but I don't think the media or most of America has enough nuance of thought to understand that.

Goody - Eugene, OR   December 17th, 2007 7:24 pm ET

One thing America has is a segment of ignorant, hate mongering, envious, pathetic, female bashing morons! The internet has certainly brought that to light. If a fraction of you has-beens accomplished what Hillary Clinton has in her life, you wouldn't be so filled with such a lack of self-respect.

BB, Washington, DC   December 17th, 2007 7:21 pm ET

It's not working for us, Hillary. It is as though you are playing right into Obama's hands with your theatrical performances. He may have some flaws, but he does have vision, intelligence, and enough insight to be able to help bridge the gap across party lines. Your performances simply coincide with the view held by many that you are a machine, and I believe America is waking up to the realization that a machine is not what we need right now.

P. Joseph, Denver, Colorado   December 17th, 2007 7:20 pm ET

There are many reasons why someone would chose an individual to be a leader for this great country and I appreciate the former first lady’s displaying her softer side. However, there is a time for everything and because of her tearful actions in such difficult time both economically and politically, this portrays not only weakness but also the inability to be strong and show the American public that they should be strong through those tough times and she will be strong leader for us. Will she shed tears when a world crisis occur and must make tough decisions to fight for what is right for the American people for example war to defend its interest? I am neither a Democrat nor a Republican but for me her tears should be now tears of sadness because she has hurt her image and may very well have lost several potential votes; particularly mines. Once again, there is a place and a time for everything and that wasn't it!

oliver   December 17th, 2007 7:19 pm ET

Hillary is so predictable. I wish she would have been stronger as a woman and showed the appropriate emotional response when her man (the president) had oral sex in the whitehouse with an intern. Any other boss and husband would have been fired by his employer and his wife. Again, Hillary was not so emotional on camera back then when things were worth getting emotional about. I just don't trust her and I really don't think she will fool most women, especially days after the media portrayed her as being so emotionless.

pbj, San Ramon, CA   December 17th, 2007 7:18 pm ET

Sincerity is the key to success. If you can fake that, you've got it made.

I'm sure the stage direction was right there in her notes:

Blah, blah, blah
[Begin spontaneous tears here]
Finish with reference to blah, blah, blah.

Say goodnight, Hillary.

We Love you Hillary!

Apparently there is nothing Hillary can do that the Bushies agree with. Too hard…too political…too calculating…
No, wait a minute..that's der Fuhrer.

michael moriarty, pasadena, ca   December 17th, 2007 7:07 pm ET

I'm sick of all the hateful villifying of Hillary on the left and right.

She's got my vote, she's a strong leader and her heart's in the right place.

Brianne   December 17th, 2007 7:06 pm ET

And the Oscar goes to….Hillary "Look at me, I'm so emtional like you" Clinton.

Gag me. I wondered who slipped her the Visine right before she went on stage.
Does she really expect people to believe this crap when she's so blatently shoving it down voters throats? Ok, Hil, we get it, you cry. You have feelings. Blah Blah Blah. This just proves how unbelievably desperate she and her camp is. It's actually quite funny.

Dan (Baltimore, MD)   December 17th, 2007 7:04 pm ET

"Sniff, sniff…Hey you, are those cameras on?" "Yes Senator Clinton."
"Good. Oh, sniff, sniff, it's so touching!"

Go shed your crocodile tears elsewhere, Hillary. Americans are smart enough to smell your pandering miles away…

Jim, Lawrenceville GA   December 17th, 2007 7:03 pm ET

Why is it that anything Hillary does, people try to act like it not real. Hillary does try to help all people. She has given many years of her life to serving people. Serving people is not easy. Hillary could be doing other things, but she has a long standing devotion to helping people. Hillary is the perfect candidate for president.

James, Dallas Tx   December 17th, 2007 7:03 pm ET

Scott, Mountain View, CA   December 17th, 2007 7:03 pm ET

Jan in Bakersfield (or anyone else who believes that HRC has such an experience advantage),

Could any of you outline for the rest of us what that huge advantage is? If she'd share her records as first lady, perhaps we could give her some credit for the Clinton years. Otherwise, doesn't she simply have 4 more years as a Senator than Obama & Edwards? Is that really such a big deal?

Would love to hear what I've been missing because Clinton supporters trumpet the "experience" card as if it's a given.

S. Naficy, Memphis, TN   December 17th, 2007 7:02 pm ET

Ajay Jain, Garland, Texas   December 17th, 2007 7:01 pm ET

One has to smile at all the “I’ll never vote for her” postings. If you are a Republican you were never going to vote for her anyway, if you are one of the distinct minority of Hillary haters on the left of the Democratic Party the essential silliness of this position will soon become apparent if she gets the nod. On present evidence this seems highly likely much to the chagrin of Mr. Balz and the media world who want a horse race because it sells newspapers and air time which is why there is all the parsing in his piece although he accepts the most likely outcome. Absent a major slip up there seems little doubt she has it wrapped up. Contrary to some assertions above she does not do conspicuously worse than Edwards or Obama against any member of the Republican field. On the contrary she does better than either of them and while they have been stuck for months in the mid twenties and mid teens for months she has steadily improved her position and has now been sitting in the low forties for weeks. In Iowa she has come from behind and leads in most polls. Why? Because she is self evidently the best candidate. She has a formidable machine, plenty of money and a few more difficult to pin down advantages like Gender and the presence of Bill who is widely respected much to the chagrin of the right.
The right must have choked over their coffee when Greenspan recently gave Bill stellar grades and of course they responded as they always do by launch personal attacks (there’s a typical example in today’s post from Novak).
There is no question she is going to get the nomination and a 60% chance she’s going to win the presidency. Even some right wingers like Karl Rove are gloomily admitting it.
All the negative comments about Hillary on this board are from disgruntled Republicans who do not have a great choice in their party and will elect a nominee called “none of the above” because Republicans will stay home in 2008.
What a stark contrast there is in the Republican nomination and the Democratic nomination campaigns. Republicans know fully well after G. W. Bush we can only have a Democratic President and its going to be Hillary this time!
People and the writer of this article give undue importance to the Iowa caucus. Isn’t it time to break the back of this myth of Iowa’s importance? They haven’t picked a winner since 1976. And Clinton and Kerry won the democratic nominations without winning in Iowa. Enough with the rural pandering.
I fondly remember the Bill Clinton administration years as pretty good ones in spite of the personal attacks from the right. The personal problems were Bill’s not Hillary’s. She had to deal with him and the public and she did it expertly with a win as a junior Senator in NY and a re-election where she won 67% of the vote, with 58 of 62 counties including the MOSTly Republican “red” counties in upstate NY.
In the General election Hillary will beat the pants off any Republican nominee trying to keep us fighting the Iraq war.
People forget that Giuliani dropped out in that first Senate race not because of prostate cancer, but because he saw the writing on the wall, which was a certain defeat and an end to his political dreams.
We may have the re-match that we never had. Rudy vs. Hillary. Single point campaign of 9-11 against well rounded Hillary.
When Bill Clinton left the White House we were a nation at peace, we had a sizable surplus, we had a growing economy, and today he is the most popular politician in the nation if not the world.
Maybe that is not such a bad thing to return to. But the reality is that Hillary is not Bill. She is by all accounts smarter and definitely won’t have the personal problems that Bill had. She is a master politician and is becoming a master speaker as attested to by looking at her in some of her live appearances and on only sweep of the Sunday news shows in this election cycle.

It is Hillary’s time and it is the time for a woman to be the US President. It is time to break the highest glass ceiling in the US. I predict that many Republican women will join because they have said “I have never voted or never voted for a Democrat in my life, but if Hillary is the candidate and I have the chance to see a woman US President in my lifetime, Hillary will have my vote!”
People underestimate the positive change that will occur around the world in the way the United States is viewed when we elect Hillary. She will be symbol for women everywhere.
It’s time to give up the sniping and for some women to stop venting their jealousy, which is really what it is when they complain not about her policies but about her personal choices as relates to Bill.
It’s time to think about the nation and Hillary will be good for the nation and the world.

Jose Card   December 17th, 2007 7:01 pm ET

Wow! Senator Hillary Clinton actually has tears just like the millions of American citizens she totally forgot.

The Clintons spent lots of their time in D.C. with their good American friends, the lobbyists. Fortunately, corporations cannot vote for president.
People spoke loudly with small amounts of donations. Our system works.

Hillary was not electable from Day One no matter how rosy major media painted her to be.

Honesty is the best policy. Hope the Clintons finally learn the lesson this time.

Paul Dickins, Ottawa, ON   December 17th, 2007 7:00 pm ET

I would really like to know in what place in this group Madame Hillary should be placed:
Indira Gandhi
Margaret Thatcher
Golda Meier
Elizabeth I
Marie Stopes
Madame Curie
Catherine the Great

My view is probably nowhere: these women are their own personas, not needing threadbare reasoning by husband clones to press the case.

Watch as the technological hard-wired marvel that is the "HillBot v2.0™" work her way through the new programming – Shiny eyes on demand? Just use program 1a. Real trickle tears? Use program 2a. Donna Drummond, San Francisisco, CA   December 17th, 2007 6:55 pm ET

Born and raised in Dubuque, Iowa and I have a question for Hillary. What did she do to help one individual today? Sure, she can tout her public concerns and get tears in her eyes when talking about helping people as a group (even though she screwed Americans over on health care during her husband's term), but I want to know what person she helped today, or yesterday, or any other day. That is where we show real concern and compassion. If she didn't personally help one person today in some way, I have grave doubts about her ability to help the nation.

John Kaleto, San Diego, CA   December 17th, 2007 6:55 pm ET

She's just like her estranged husband–willing to say anything to anyone just to get elected, and letting the polls dictate how the campaign is run.
The rally cry for 2008 should be, "No more Clintons!"

James, Newark DE   December 17th, 2007 6:54 pm ET

The funny thing is, this will only work with people who are already gonna vote for her. Everyone else with more than half a brain sees it for what it is. What next? Her favorite cookie recipe to show what a little homemaker she is? Oh, wait. She already did that.

Wow, I cant believe all the Hillary haters here.
It's been my experience that people who ridicule genuine empathy and passion for a cause are people who simply don't possess those qualities themselves and feel diminished when confronted with them in others. This is probably too complex an idea for most of the Hill- haters to comprehend, but I can always hope.

Please, CNN, don't delete this – you'll take away ALL my hope..

I don't like dirty politics… first Bill Shaheen and the drug dealer remark, then Bill's nasty Obama remarks on Charlie Rose, now Bob Kerry really crosses the line… saying Obama attended a Madrassa.

Tim, Seattle, WA   December 17th, 2007 6:43 pm ET

Who is running her campaign? They are doing a great job for Barack. Keep up the good work! I saw Barack speak in Seattle last week. He was very inpsiring and actually gave me hope that he could take the country down a different path. It is frightening the one we are on now and no one besides Barack and Edwards gives me hope.

If Hillary won, I don't think I could vote for her. I find her that despicable. She is no different than what we have now. She changes her views like the wind and is driven by nothing but her own ambition.

JW, LA CA   December 17th, 2007 6:42 pm ET

I am gay. I am HIV positive. I am a Democrat and I live in Los Angeles.

I agree with those saying she doesn't come across as sincere. I voted for Clinton, I voted for Kerry, I voted for Gore.

I will never vote for Hillary. She is one of the most insincere people I've ever seen in the political arena. Few politicians have the solidly tin ear for voters that she has shown in this campaign.

Obama, Edwards, Richardson, Biden, even McCain or Giuliani… I can live with those.

Anybody but Hillary in 2008. Please.

If she did stage a crying scene in order to show her "softer side" it's only because, as the article states, Americans want to see it. So what? Trying to appeal to voters is news?

It was very good to see the "CHARITY BELLS RING FOR CNN'S CROWLEY" aricle in U.S. News. To my mind she is one of the very few CNN staff worthy of listening to, and I was most impressed to read of her support for The Salvation Army and its gathering of "Bell Ringers" who, if noticed, are "dissed" by most of the general public and media folks.

S/Texas   December 17th, 2007 6:34 pm ET

You people need to just shut up! No matter what this woman does you have a negative opinion about her. She's either to hard and now she's too soft, blah, blah, blah. In case you all don't know, people are emotional beings. Because a woman cries doesn't mean she's weak or looking for pity. Even a strong woman tears up when talking about something that means a lot to her and is close to their heart. It’s called being human! At least she's not made out of stone and doesn’t lack compassion and empathy for others. To me, people that are afraid or "cannot" show human emotion are just cold hearted and self centered. I stay away from those types of people. I want a president that cares about people, and I believe Hillary does. Unlike Obama who just wants to be president to "prove" that he can do it. You want to talk about phony? That's Edwards and Obama!

Clinton will be the democrats best chance for the White House and most of us with a brain agree she is the most qualified. Obama, not ready yet but will one day make a great president. Sorry Oprah.

I would only hope if I were in her shoes that I had lifelong friends who would go the extra mile for me as Hillary's friends are doing now. This speaks volumes of a persons character. Go Hillary.

Katy   December 17th, 2007 6:34 pm ET

Dennis, Los Angeles CA   December 17th, 2007 6:32 pm ET

Sorry Mrs. Clinton, but the nation is not only fatigued with Bush/Clinton, we are just plain sick of blatant manipulation. Hillary’s family and friends event was pure theatrics where she is going for the performance of her life. Stop it, go away and let real change agents go for the job of leader of the free world – sadly many people don’t even know what a change is anymore. Hillary and all the deal makers must go; we need a person with real character, experienced or not. Speaking of Hillary’s Clinton experience, yeah we all experienced Bill looking straight into the camera and lying about “that woman.” Then we experienced Hillary’s rise to Senator from New York as reward for keeping the “partnership” together. It appears now as if even those deepest in the den of estrogen are waking to the reality of Hillary, thank God. For those whom a woman president is important, choose Barbara Boxer next time, she is a capable person of intelligence true character.

All you Obamaniacs – I know he talks about change, but what has he done to actually affect a number of people? The only bill he's passed as a Senator was recognition of the Republic of Congo. Most of you are so young and/or so unwilling to look at the facts – who has implemented change all their lives, and Dodd, Richardson, Biden and Clinton all have a record on change:

As First Lady, Hillary helped create SCHIP, which provides health insurance for more than 6 million children: As First Lady, Hillary helped pass the State Children's Health Insurance Program. She helped negotiate the bill with Congress and later was the point person working to ensure that parents across the country knew about the program and signed up their children. "Over the course of a year, the program, financed jointly by the federal government and the states, provides health insurance to six million children in families that have too much income to qualify for Medicaid but not enough to buy private insurance." [White House Press Release 10/17/00; New York Times, 3/14/07]

As Senator, Hillary helped ensure that 370,000 children did not lose coverage: As Senator, Clinton successfully sponsored legislation to extend $2.7 billion in unused State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) funding. Because the Clinton-backed bill became law, the $2.7 billion in expiring funds will now go to the states for their intended purpose – health coverage for children. This action alone prevented 360,000 children nationwide from losing coverage. Recently, Hillary introduced a major expansion of the program, extending children's health coverage to families up to 400% of the federal poverty level (which is $70,000 for a family of three). [HRC Press Release 8/14/03; Hillary release, 3/14/07 ]

We Love you, Hillary!!! Don't let the bias Media & those HATERS defines you…. Keep Marching On!!!

Ben, Nashville, TN   December 17th, 2007 6:26 pm ET

She has lost credibility and lost my vote.

It's easy during a political campaign to lose your sense of yourself. I don't think Edwards, Biden, Richardson, Dodd, or Obama have lost themselves. But Hillary has been so focused on posturing, acting, and politicking that I'm afraid she's lost any sense of authenticity.

If she would have started her campaign this way, maybe I would trust it. But she needed to prove she is tough – which just demonstrates our country's sexism. Now, at a time where she's trying to appear soft, I don't buy it.

Robert Bell, Brunswick, Georgia   December 17th, 2007 6:24 pm ET

"Democrat Hillary Clinton got visibly emotional at an Iowa campaign event Monday morning designed to showcase a softer side of the New York senator."

The key word here is DESIGNED. This is not a spontaneous moment here. The "Tour of Tears" on the "Hilly Copter" was DESIGNED to hit as many forums in Iowa as possible, with an emotional-on-demand Hillary showing her "softer side".

The technical definition for that is "acting".

It would have worked if it was not a pre-arranged, scripted deal.

And therein lies the rub.

amyn,arl,tx   December 17th, 2007 6:24 pm ET

Don't hate Hillary because she's an accomplished woman. What's the wisdom in that please God help me.
Can anyone tell me what she did so wrong?
This is a very smart accomplished woman. If she is such a polarising figure as some would want us to believe, then why is she not known for that in the state she represents.
Just tell me people what has hillary done so wrong that you can not see her single sterling qualities.
Please respect my first lady.I wouldn't stand for anyone who denigrates any of our first ladies and the vice first ladies.
They are accomplished women who may be as smart as their husbands and there is no gain to nobody bellitling their intelligence.
I am aware of the insecurity a lot of men have around smart, trusting and pretty females. Now get over that if you are a male and feel secured. And tothe femalesI say this is one of your own so don't hate.

Teddy Bear, ND, IN   December 17th, 2007 6:20 pm ET

Wow… whats next HRC. What else is in the line up. Would you just show the American People who you really are and stop taking us for fools. Of those "friends" how many of them deep down would be your friend if you were not married to the formal president. Or are they just as cold and calculating as you seem. I am sure deep down inside there is a truly human side of you but you have yet to show it. Its one thing to be a strong woman but women are suppose to be the ones with a heart. Can you show me that you have one? Please no more fake tears, i can tear up on cue also wanna see? What you need is a new team of strategist. You are married to the best politician in the world, have him advise you.

Jeff Jones   December 17th, 2007 6:20 pm ET

Billary Clinton is one of the most cunning and calculating polticians in recent history. Her brand of political theater would be given a rating of "x" due to it's over-the-top emotionalism. She is so fake that she exudes it. This lady will do anything to get the Democratic nod in the primary. I am amazed at how slavishly attached to MRS. Clinton (sans the Rodham) some Democrats are. Is their lust in nominating this neo-liberal sycophant so great that they would jeopardize the possibility of regaining the White House? Hillary shifts in the direction that the polls tell her to shift in. She hasn't a sense of conviction or compunction in anything. She is a powermongering progressive feminist who doesn't have time "to stay home and bake cookies…" She is all about herself.

Former Senator Bob Kerrey, now president of New York University, got it one hundred per cent right in his endorsement of Hillary Clinton. This woman is one of the hardest workers, sincere in her job as representing all New Yorkers for the past seven years. And I suppose it was all right for the Bushes to tear up during speeches, but for the lady to do it is disgraceful. Right? Hillary is for real so we all should give her a break, and ourselves at the same time.

Her husband cheated on her in front of the world, with a girl almost the same age as her daughter with all the sordid details public domain, and she doesn't shed a tear, ever… I can't even recall her looking sad on camera. Now she is on a champaign and her polls say people see her as cold and out comes a mother nones every seen, and a daughter and now tears, with friends. To any who are thinking of voting for her , you know that her and her husband are in this for the power and not for the betterment of America.

Tyrese Gail Williams Philadelphia Pennsylvania   December 17th, 2007 6:12 pm ET

Just another phony attempt by Clinton to stem her slide in the polls. This woman will stop at nothing: smearing her opponents, lying about her experience, or now crying "crocodile tears" to show her so called softer side. She is the most nasty, polarizing candidate in either party and American voters can hopefully see thru her act.

Nancy, Dallas TX   December 17th, 2007 6:11 pm ET

The error is on the part of voters who 'want to see a softer side' of Hillary. The woman is running for President, not head of the PTA. Voters, get a grip.

john, NY,NY   December 17th, 2007 6:11 pm ET

wow, now you have lost my vote. I don't what a candidate who want sympathy to be voted for. I think I would love to see a woman president but not this one. Kinda wondering what is up with all these swings!

Is Barak going to sit down and let this witch get her way? Bill and Hill, if you think African Americans are going to vote for you after hurting Barak, you must be dreaming. They will sit at home on the election day, if Barak is not the one (Good news for GOP). Shame on you Bill for attacking Obama. You are not any different from your wife (Pretenders, who would do anything to get their way). I'm sure African Americans know now that the Clintons are nothing but fraud. America is no different from third world countries ( Ruled by the same corrupt people)

She's only tearing up because of the GARLIC. Vampires hate Garlic! HA!

PAPA, IOWA   December 17th, 2007 6:10 pm ET

well , she said she has been in public life for over 30years or whatever the campaign says. So if that is true then why does she need people to come and testify about her softer side. One would think that for someone who has been in public life we should have known that side already. So if we don't know that. Then what else don't we know. This is a load of crap. She is calculated and poll driven. I guess the campaign realised the famous cackle (laugh) is not working so now polling says lets trying some tears.
Hahahah. She wants be president by any means necessary.

ao, Ann Arbor MI   December 17th, 2007 6:09 pm ET

I love her – she is the most sly fox in current presidential politics.

Robert Winstead, Alexandria, Virginia   December 17th, 2007 6:09 pm ET

Crocodile tears, get on the bad side of the Clintons' and it will be you doing the crying.

Mario Preston ID   December 17th, 2007 6:08 pm ET

greytmom in Cypress Tx   December 17th, 2007 6:07 pm ET

Oh for god's sake – why does she have to be held to higher emotional standards then the other candidates? Because she's female? And what about her being a politician – they all are no matter what they say. And she is the most experienced candidate. I say she should be president & Bill should be Secretary of State.

James, Chicago, IL   December 17th, 2007 6:06 pm ET

The tears are real, folks. They were brought on by the latest poll results she saw before going on stage…and they're not tears of joy!

Tim Syracuse, New York   December 17th, 2007 6:05 pm ET

No matter what she says or does, the Hillary-haters will go after her.

Ease off — those of us who grew up in the '60s know a good one when we see one.

Please use your talents to improve the country, not waste your time pounding her.

John Petty, Aurora, CO   December 17th, 2007 6:04 pm ET

OK, big talkers, here's a question for you: If Hillary Clinton wins the Democratic nomination, will you vote for her or not?

Will progressives did as they did in 1968, and sit on their hands while Nixon was elected? Will they flake off and vote for somebody like Ralph Nader, as they did in 2000, and throw the election to Bush?

Just like 'There's no crying in Baseball", there's no crying in running for president'.

dan, Denver, CO   December 17th, 2007 6:03 pm ET

Most of you people need to think for yourselves. A whole lot of you sound like bad Rush Limbaugh clones. There's a reason why Hillary is so polarizing…it's because the right wing has been lampooning her for over a decade. She's become the caricature that they have tried so hard to make her out to be. I'm not saying that Hillary isn't some of the things that they claim. But just because Rush Limbaugh says something doesn't make it so. Remember people, he is an oxycotin/viagra addict. Not exactly the person you should be basing your life decisions on.

Think for yourselves and come up with your own conclusions about the candidates. This way when you post your enlightened comments you won't sound like a talking-point spewing blowhard.

A. J. Freeman Globe, Arizona   December 17th, 2007 6:03 pm ET

I find it outrageous that the CNN Producer of this story states as, if its objective fact, that Clinton's visible emotion was "designed" to showcase a softer side of the New York senator, sic. That's not a fact, Mr. Mooney, it's your opinion. Your bias is blatantly obvious, and very unprofessional.

Will Boston   December 17th, 2007 6:01 pm ET

oh good grief.
nice that she and romney agreed to have their scripted shows of emotion on two different days…would hate to see them step on each others' news cycle!! you know you have problems when your campaign has "planned" events to show your softer side. aren't those things supposed to be unplanned and…dare i say: natural??

"Democrat Hillary Clinton got visibly emotional at an Iowa campaign event Monday morning designed to showcase a softer side of the New York senator."

So even their campaign admits it was all a show. Boo Hoo.

John rehoboth Beach Delaware   December 17th, 2007 5:59 pm ET

Geez what is all this venom about? In High School there were always the girls who were driven and calculating and abrasive. They planned the dances and ran the paper and eventually trotted off to good colleges. These girls were not my favorite people. Sometimes I thought they were fake but the one thing I couldnt deny was that they were tireless and got stuff done, whatever their motives and strategies were. I want stuff to get done in this country and frankly I dont think any of the men, as much as I respect all of them, have the where with all and stamina that she has. Save all this nastiness for the general election…we're goon NEED it democrats.

rbrooks, Charlottesville VA   December 17th, 2007 5:59 pm ET

This is the most revolting focus-grouped Hillary Moment yet.
Every time she makes an appearance she looks more calculated and rehearsed. And she can even summon up a tear – go for the Oscar, Hillary!
Thanks, but I'll just keep in mind how you vote and who you listen to.
This is insulting, frankly. What a ridiculous person.

Let the Leaders Lead, Arcadia, Iowa   December 17th, 2007 5:59 pm ET

Howard, Chicago, IL   December 17th, 2007 5:59 pm ET

Gather your comrades of past years,
And cry us a river of crocodile tears.
You've always wanted to help somebody,
But we know it's about you or nobody.
In '92, we got two for the price of one,
And in '96 it became twice the fun.
Then you made a dash for the Senate,
After heading to New York State.
Asked about plans to run as President
After becoming a New York resident.
You made us all to know,
The Senate was as far as you’d go!
But now the truth is out,
And raw power is what you’re all about!
Like Bill, you’re so full of lies,
They even come as tears in your eyes!

There seems to be a misconception about Hillary that she is a divisive
figure. Is that because some love to hate her? This is the first time we
as a nation will have an opportunity to vote for a woman who is a competent experienced individual that can better our nation.
We are divided as a nation on many issues but we need leadership that can
hit the ground running to correct some
pressing problems and despite how her
compassionate nature, make up and hair may be perceived these are hardly criteria important to consider. Obama may show promise but he is not yet ready for the task and the republicans are one sorry lot.

john c. public, chicago, il   December 17th, 2007 5:53 pm ET

The voters have to face the reality that an uncomfortably high number of fanatical and unstable individuals have the very deepest hatred for the former first lady.

Posted By bobby : December 17, 2007 3:24 pm

Bobby -> There's a reason for that. She is a cold, calculating, manipulative, revenge-oriented politician, who will say/do anything to get her power back. Oh, and she lies …. easily. Her negatives are at 50%. So, YES, there are a LOT of people who will never vote for her, or trust her. Does that come by accident? The media certainly doesn't bash her. The PEOPLE talk about her like that. Cal Thomas called her a pathological liar back in the 90s when she WAS first lady. Slick promised to punch him in the nose. Still waiting, like most of his promises.

Pete, Chicago, IL   December 17th, 2007 5:52 pm ET

Are the Obama supporters crying foul over their perceived Clinton "theatrics"? Can there be anything more theatrical than Oprah Winfrey campaigning for Obama? Once again Obama and his supporters want to have their cake and eat it too!

When all of the dust settles, Hillary, I believe will come out on top. The only reason Obama is surging in the polls is because the Media hasn't scrutinized his record (or lack thereof). Obama claims to be against the war, yet in 2005, he stated he's "where's George Bush is at"; He attacks Hillary Clinton's foreign policy as flawed, yet fails to show up for important Foreign Policy votes in the US Senate. And his rational for voting only 'present' when it came to expanding abortion rights (See Chicago Tribune), was to provide him and his allies "political cover". In each of these cases, Obama could have made a stand for change, but instead came out O for 3. Is this what we want in our next US President?

Former President Bill Clinton is right, having an individual with no executive experience and only 1 year of national service (when he actually shows up to vote) is unprecedented. Not only unprecedented, but dangerous. The last time an inexperienced candidate was chosen as President was in 2000. We have all seen what that led to.

I do not believe that Obama is the golden child that we all believe him to be. I don't have to watch his pep rallies, I only need to compare his record to that of Clinton's. Clinton will not only talk the talk, but walk the walk. Clinton is change I can believe in.

Andrew, Washington DC   December 17th, 2007 5:52 pm ET

Joel, Tacoma WA   December 17th, 2007 5:52 pm ET

Jesus Christ, there are no Christians in America, and not much for press coverage either.

So Hillary Clinton gets a little moist eyed when around old friends who are talking her up. This isn't news anymore than when someone gets misty eyed at a retirement party. This piece tells me nothing about any candidates, and that apparently its a slow news day for the press.

As for the comments to it, I am not a Hillary supporter because of policy, but the rest of you hounds that haven't met her need to go find yourself a red letter bible and read the red letters. Start off with LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR and move on to PRAY FOR YOUR ENEMIES. Reading comments like this makes me feel sick to my stomache.

Jan Villarreal, Bakersfield,Ca   December 17th, 2007 5:49 pm ET

Hillary is the best candidate for the Presidency. She is certainly the best candidate to finally represent American women! Experience does count. Many can talk about change but they have no way to back it up. Hillary can get the job done!

Paul W., Tampa, FL   December 17th, 2007 5:49 pm ET

Wow, how interesting that ~7 out of 8 of the anti-Hillary responses in here are from men. What's the problem boys? Feeling a little threatened by a woman with more power, brains and potential than you'll ever know?

You know, you can still buy a Camaro and put one of those classy italicized number 3's in your rear window to compensate for your…short comings. Grow up boys.

If you people believe those were real tears , then you people are trully either super ignorant or ultra naive….The woman is the most calculating cold hearted evil woman to ever enter Politics…The woman is incapble of shedding tears…..

Kate, NY, NY   December 17th, 2007 5:48 pm ET

The bias with which this article is written is incredible. Doesn't CNN pride itself on being a hard-hitting, objective news channel unlike the Fox News and MSNBCs of the nation? Phrases like "designed to showcase" are clearly manipulative. Judging from the comments it worked on the absorptive minds of the lemmings. Sheep need to learn how to take their news with a grain of salt.

Kevin, Landover, MD   December 17th, 2007 5:45 pm ET

Well we wanted to know just how ridicules this Campaign would get and now we see. It’s like watching a peace of steel get sweaty on a hot day and interpreting it as the steel crying. This is a ploy and it should be very interesting to see how far Hillary will go with these antics.

Women must be so ashamed. They no more want to see a Presidential Candidate cry as they wanted to see Ellen cry over a dog in public. That does not show strength

Tim , Seattle   December 17th, 2007 5:45 pm ET

Its funny that when ever I ask someone why they 'hate' her, they stumble to find a concrete reason. I think some have genuine disagreements with her policy positions, but most just hate her… just because.

Most of her colleagues on both sides of the aisle have expressed admiration or respect for her at one point or another over the last few years.

Its really a catch 22 for Hillary. If shes tough, it threatens a lot of males (and women) who are apparently threatened by a strong woman figure. That makes her'cold' and calculating'. And if she softens up and tries to dispel that myth about her (and who among us would not want to correct that image?) , she is not genuine, is being slick or pandering. And she is weak.

I may not vote for Hillary, but I just dont listen to the Hillary haters anymore, they have no credibility as far as I am concerned.

Lola,Cleveland,OH   December 17th, 2007 5:45 pm ET

I was undecided but this seems so scripted and fake that she has pushed me towards Obama.

Sarah, Manassas, Virginia   December 17th, 2007 5:43 pm ET

You commenters are bunch of haters. Can anyone tell me why in the world you all hate Hillary?

Reading through the comments, I did not see any substantive reasons why you all don't want her to be president. You all need to back it up with facts.

Just an FYI, I am NEITHER a democrat or republican but I will prefer someone who has made mistakes in the past, learned from the mistakes rather than someone with no experience. Presidency is not walk in the park.

For those of you who are Christians, remember that he who hates his fellow human being is a murderer. So back up all your comments with facts.

The nations we have defeated in war enjoy more freedom than we Americans do,,,and Hillary nor any of the other candidates are the answer to any problem.

After watching the tape, I was very moved … to leave the room to lose my lunch! This is so LOLF! Her campaign takes a poll to determine that a large percentage of people think Her Royal Thighness is cold and calculating. Sooooooooo, wait for it, they "announce" that we're NOW going to show you her softer, emotional side so you WILL like her. It's not just HER, it's her socialist, gov't expanding POLICIES we don't want! These people have no shame, and are pathetic.

For God's sake, she has friends she's had her whole life around her at this event. Who wouldn't get emotional? She's not a coldless robot. She's had to be tough all these months because she's a sharp and focused individual with a goal of changing this country. If she wants to have a moment to reflect on her life and feel love for the folks who've been with her from day one to see it, LET HER!! And as far as campaign tactics go, that's what campaigns do. E. C., Houston, Texas   December 17th, 2007 5:26 pm ET

LOL!…Give Hillary an Academy Award Nomination….because that's the ONLY Nomination she has earned so far. She's certainly NOT qualified for Presidential Office. Hillary speaks fiction, not truth! No way!

Dear lord. This woman gets more pathetic by the day. To answer someone else's question, no, she doesn't have an authentic bone in her body.

The truth is no one will ever know who Hillary Clinton really is, and that's a sad truth because I have to believe that some time way, way back in her past she was her own person. She is smart, and she does care about children. It's too bad her absolute lust for power in a man's world turned her into what she is today, a ruthlessly calculating politician with absolutely no personal integrity.

What a shame that this is something actually admirable to some people.

Fred, Reston VA   December 17th, 2007 5:18 pm ET

JW from Denver,

See that is the problem right there. Elections in this country are like prom king and queen. What policy of Al Gore's did america dislike so much? they wanted a guy they "could have a beer with."

Your kind of politics is what the 97,000 Nader voters in Florida 2000 thought. "vote for something not against it" or some garbage like that. Look where it got us!

And the people on here are so rude. Hillary can't have friends? Nobody on here has met her, so all of your negativity is from heresay. At least she has DONE something to be critisized for unlike Obama, or Edwards for that matter.

Danny G. Boca Raton, FL   December 17th, 2007 5:18 pm ET

Sen. clinton has still to miss a vote in the senate, it is stomping every day, that takes a toll. have some respect too. this is not Jimmy Swaggart pleading to the congregation, this is a person that is loved by many and is thankful to see them out there for her. Doug, New Jersey   December 17th, 2007 4:55 pm ET

The libs here who are talking about how she is human and have a heart are exactly the type of people who car salesmen dream of at night.

Nah, I don't buy it at all, these libs are just as mean, cold, heart-less, selfish, and rude as she is, but then again that is what it means to be a democrat these days. Just spend some time in a real blue area like Boston or NYC, then go to the middle of the nation in some nice red area. Observe how people treat you in both places, then decide your vote on that. If you do so let me just say thanks for voting republican. :)

HILLARYLOVER, NY, NY   December 17th, 2007 4:55 pm ET

Give Hillary a fair shake sheesh!

boy, the orahbama folks that CNN lets post here are really disturbed, they should check out some medical attention. Really angery for muslims/so-called christians supporting obamawinphrey

CLINTON IS OUTSTANDING! but you wont see that on CNN…

Mbala, New York, NY   December 17th, 2007 4:46 pm ET

Hypocrite

Darrel Lone Rock Iowa   December 17th, 2007 4:43 pm ET

Try every day to help someone? Not ALL or EVERYONE, but someone. Don't think that someone is Hillary now do you?
She is toast and everyone knows it.
So far she has no platform to run on.
The Democrats have much more to offer than a remake of the Clinton Years and there special interest.
Middle class America will be represented by the next President of the USA!
Independant just like Lou Dobbs!!

James, Battle Creek Michigan   December 17th, 2007 4:41 pm ET

"What I try to do every day is figure out how to help somebody,”

She will give us bigger government with more control over every aspect of your lives by using the emotional tactic of "doing good" for everyone.

Bridget, TX   December 17th, 2007 4:35 pm ET

She's playing the "you can't say no to a crying woman" card…

Mike O   December 17th, 2007 4:32 pm ET

She's not the devil, but having to actually put together a directed campaign effort along these lines is a sad commentary indeed.

She is a cold, calculating politician; there is nothing inherently good or bad in that; but to try to mask it like this obviously artificial manner shows she is not being well served by her advisors. Fred Thompson will never require such an effort; maybe he could give her lessons :)

Her campaign is obviously toast; only the 800+ super-delegates can save her now.

Greg Bonds   December 17th, 2007 4:29 pm ET

Warning to all AMERICANS: Democrats, Independents, and Republicans; Run away from HILLARY! Run away from Hillary! Run away from Hillary!

Unite to make sure Hillary does not WIN for the sake of our lives and our future. Hillary is a pretender ready to unleash unbelieveable wreck on on nation to satisfy her ambition.

If you really love Bill Clinton prevent Hillary from winning the nomination then see what Hillary does. Bill will become a free man.

A word is enough for the wise.

jmaya, iowa   December 17th, 2007 4:28 pm ET

All over the world for a woman's intelligence and smartness is undervalued by society in different ways. Hillary suffers same reason. It's not she doesn't has soft side; matriarchal society hates women who tend to be strong.

Hillary is 200% times better than any democrat and republican but matters of her gender that's all.

Hillary for president'08!

confuesd from NY   December 17th, 2007 4:24 pm ET

After Bill Clinton's remark to Charlie Rose in reagard to experience, during the interview last Friday: "… being a president is a lot like being a thousand-dollar-a night call girl, Charlie" – I am really confused and distubed.
Can anybody explain to me what he meant?

demwit   December 17th, 2007 4:23 pm ET

I wonder if meathead wrote this script too..

Monte Brown, New York, NY   December 17th, 2007 4:23 pm ET

The best song I could think of which describes how well Hillary is courting Iowans is the following.

"Open the door and come on in
I'm so glad to see you my friend
You're like a rainbow coming around the bend
And when I see you smiling
Well, it sets my heart free
I'd like to be as good a friend to you
as you are to me." -Words by Judy Collins

GO HILLARY 2008.

Dan, TX   December 17th, 2007 4:21 pm ET

Now in this scene we want to show the voters how lovable you are – and…ACTION!!!!!

Alice, Seattle, WA   December 17th, 2007 4:21 pm ET

"She is human and has a heart".

She is? Are YOU sure?

Tom Dedham, Mass   December 17th, 2007 4:14 pm ET

The voters have to face the reality that an uncomfortably high number of fanatical and unstable individuals have the very deepest hatred for the former first lady.

Posted By bobby : December 17, 2007 3:24 pm

Can you read "bobby", The event and Web site are all part of an effort to convey a softer image of Clinton, as polls continue to indicate Democratic primary voters view her as less likeable and more like a "typical politician" than her chief rival, Barack Obama.

Typical of Clintonista sheep, she is "forced" to make an "effort" to appear that she is something that she is not, and as usual, Clintonista's blame the smart people that can read and see right through this charade.

As for "fanatical and unstable" individuals, you just described the "herd" perfectly.

Chelsea has always been off limits in campaigns (THEIR WORDS) and now bringing out her and her Mother didn't give them the bump needed so how about some croc tears.

No using "the gender card" going on here………….

Scott, Madison, WI   December 17th, 2007 4:14 pm ET

Sorry, Hil, you're still not passing the smell test. Keep tryin'!

Sean, Detroit, MI   December 17th, 2007 4:09 pm ET

WOW what a joke. Does she ever do anything that's not completely contrived?

Wallace, Chicago IL   December 17th, 2007 4:08 pm ET

Lol… This is hilarious!
C'mon Hillary, not the tears.

"What I try to do every day is figure out how to help somebody,” she said later in the event…

Then she needs to talk to her campaign manager so she can help him, help her because this is starting to get embarrassing.

pam Eugene OR   December 17th, 2007 4:02 pm ET

OMG
What a fraud she is! Give me a break…real tears. She can be anything you want her to be for about a minute.
Obama 08

Michael, Torrance, CA   December 17th, 2007 4:01 pm ET

This is exactly why Hillary won't win this election. When was the last time anyone witnessed a presidential candidate cry? A softer side of Hillary, after this, she's already milk toast.

Mark, Shreveport, La   December 17th, 2007 4:00 pm ET

I wonder if this is the same type of "emotion" Bill expressed at Ron Brown's funeral where the camera caught him laughing then he saw the camera and quickly wiped a "tear" from his eye.
She's learned from the greatest politician of the past 100 years!

Ade, Memphis TN   December 17th, 2007 3:59 pm ET

Fake, fake fake!

Del . Boise Idaho   December 17th, 2007 3:56 pm ET

You've got to be kidding! There is NOTHING she won't do. Now she wants to show a "soft " side., her with a tear? She couldn't tear up with mace. It's hard to understand just how stupid hilly-billy think you guys are. and you fall for it. She'd stub her toe to get a tear if needed or pull a hair from her nose, that always gets a tear. Wake up libs before it's too late.

Jay, Ames, Iowa   December 17th, 2007 3:54 pm ET

What will be amusing is when She wins the Iowa caucus. As a democrat I like how tough the Clintons are. The Republicans on this blog (see the previous posts) are actually afraid of CLinton. They dream about an Obama nomination.

Too Wet, VT   December 17th, 2007 3:53 pm ET

Oh no, we got a "weeper" or is it crocodile tears. Ok, Hillacopter, you can turn off the waterworks now, no one's watching.

anon New York, NY   December 17th, 2007 3:48 pm ET

In March of 1992, just one day before the Super Tuesday primaries, Hillary Clinton angrily said on national television "I supposed I could have stayed home and baked cookies and had teas, but I decided to fufill my career…"

I think that was the "real" Hillary Clinton.

dmw, roeland park,ks   December 17th, 2007 3:46 pm ET

For the posters who can not even show some type of respect or appreciation for the friends one has, is a very lowly lot of people.

This just tells me that those posters are a sad, sad group. They are mean and hateful. I feel sorry for their friends and family because it appears they have no compassion, warmth, or any positivity about them. And, this is what America has become to a large degree.

It now appears that it is just hate Hillary ad nauseaum and it is very old and tiresome, pityful and disheartening.

Wallace, Chicago IL   December 17th, 2007 3:42 pm ET

rdierker   December 17th, 2007 3:37 pm ET

I think I figured out who that "somebody" is that she tries to help every day…Its herself. That poor poor woman Hillary Clinton who needs all the help she can get to not look so disingenuous, I really feel for her. NOT! Who exactly was she helping when she took 100,000$ in bribes from insurance company lobbyist. Can anyone say "failed health care plan" To think of all the people that could have been helped if Hillary didn't sell health care down the river 14 years ago

John NC   December 17th, 2007 3:32 pm ET

She is a typical politician.

Frank Mayans, Los Angeles CA   December 17th, 2007 3:32 pm ET

I wish people could really look into her eyes and say "Wow, this women has fought for Children her whole life"

Jon, Pittsburgh, PA   December 17th, 2007 3:32 pm ET

These first 8 posts show how misinformed and judgmental Americans are. They know little other than what they hear on talk radio or read in the news media – most of which is not accurate and a lot of which is not true.

Hillary is only as divisive as the media have made her to be. Maybe if you know-it-alls that have such knowledge of her real personality would listen to what people that actually do know her, you might learn something.

But, I realize that requires an open mind – of which you are lacking. And, that you are not interested in knowing the truth. Your interest is believing what you want to believe.

You reveal your stupidity with every word you post.

Jimenez   December 17th, 2007 3:30 pm ET

We love you Hillary. Don't let the haters get to you. You have support from so many, women and men of every race are behind you.

Frank Mayans, Los Angeles   December 17th, 2007 3:30 pm ET

She is human and has a heart. I dislike the way how many portray her to be some type of devil or something.

Tim, Cincinnati, OH   December 17th, 2007 3:27 pm ET

I find it hard to believe that those were real tears. Does this woman have an authentic bone in her body?

faith   December 17th, 2007 3:26 pm ET

i think George Bush inspires more hatred than Hillary Clinton but he keeps on at it. Maybe we need to make the rightwing face its demons by voting her into office. President Ford was unsuccessful for other reasons than the attempt on his life. Reagan had an assassination attempt on him too and he's thought be many to have been a good president.

Lisa H., Ann Arbor, MI   December 17th, 2007 3:25 pm ET

I try to not fall for the media-spin on this stuff, but I can't help but think the whole "visibly emotional" thing is just a charade. If her campaign managers told her to be firm and stoic, then that's exactly what we'd see. I want a politician who is genuine and authentic. For me, that person is Obama.

bobby   December 17th, 2007 3:24 pm ET

The voters have to face the reality that an uncomfortably high number of fanatical and unstable individuals have the very deepest hatred for the former first lady.

THATS MY BOY SAM, Houston TX   December 17th, 2007 3:24 pm ET

"The event and Web site are all part of an effort to convey a softer image of Clinton, as polls continue to indicate Democratic primary voters view her as less likeable and more like a "typical politician" than her chief rival, Barack Obama."

Now, I realize the cynicism involved in reaching this conclusion, but I think that such levels of cynicism are not only acceptable, but necessary, when dealing and interpreting modern day politics and the "coverage" of such politics.

Her campaign theme for the day is to show a softer side of her and on that very day we see her become emotional for the first time ever? Now, I'm not a clinton hater – i was and still am a big supporter of the original clinton administration, but this is just too much. I mean really, when she went through all the turmoil related to her husband's philandering she didnt break a tear or a sweat, but on "softer hillary day" – out come the waterworks.

Sorry, this voter simply isn't buying it. And if anyone wants to criticize me for being insensitive please be my guest, but you're only fooling yourself if you have a less cynical outlook on today's politics/political candidates.

Except, of course, for my boy Barack Obama.

OBAMA '08

Robert Bell, Brunswick, Georgia   December 17th, 2007 3:23 pm ET

I would fall for this sort of thing, except that the CLinton campaign telegraphed that this is exactly what they were planning on doing – showing the softer side of Hillary, in a campaign swing through Iowa on her "Hilly copter".

No, I kid you not, that was the latest big idea from highly paid political consultants – "Hilly Copter". I feel sorry for people who contributed to the campaign and had their money wasted on that.

So Hillary crying is not real, it is another faked-up campaign deal. And I know this because the campaign told us they were going to do this a week ago.

It's like Al Gore or John Kerry all over again. She's not going to figure out that she just has to be HERSELF until it is too late.

People can tell from 100 yards away when it is an act and when it is real. And Hillary comes off as an act.

Which is too bad.

Michael Columbus, IN   December 17th, 2007 3:21 pm ET

she is so calculated…even in her emotions. how can one be so cold and brash to coordinate a campaign event to show the softer side.

didn't jcpenny try advertising the softer side???? that didn't work either.

neither will this.

Ca Native   December 17th, 2007 3:21 pm ET

Hillary starts losing support among women – she starts campaigning with her mom and daughter.

Hillary is viewed to cold and harsh.. she cries at a campaign event.

Next… we'll see Bill biting his lip as he holds back tears because of "the chilllllldren"??

Clinton Fatigue!

Jen, Cedar Falls, IA   December 17th, 2007 3:19 pm ET

Oh Pulleeez! Get me a tissue! This belongs on the Comedy Channel – oh wait, then perhaps she could get an Oscar for it. Then hopefully go away with her husband…they've had their time, it's time for our country to moooovvvveeee on with its leadership!

Tim   December 17th, 2007 3:18 pm ET

HRC, or Hillary Clinton, can she even make up her mind on her real name. She is supposedly for immigration reform, but voted to kill it. Is she for or against Drivers licenses for illegal immigrants? That depends on the minute. Health Care reform, you want the Federal government running it? She wants you to have the Senates health care, the most gold-plated package known to man. Education Reform? Let the unions run your schools, oh yeah they are incompetent, we trail all industrialized nations in grades K-12 education. Education Unions want to dumb down education. Education schools don't teach math and science to their future teachers. As a math tutor I was helping these future teachers pass 8th grade level math courses. Energy reform, Hillary fights all efforts to expand energy mining, and efforts to build new nuclear and coal plants. Nuclear plants don't produce carbon emissions, new coal plants use the most abundant form of energy available to America, and these new plants are way cleaner than all other carbon based plants in existence.

Vicky,nyc,ny   December 17th, 2007 3:17 pm ET

Everything I find despicable about President Bush-Cheney I find equally so in Hillary. To mention only three points:

Like Bush-Cheney, Hillary is a viciously polarizing and divisive person, to the citizens at large as well as to non-Democrats (and even to innumerable Democrats), at a time when America needs a unifying leader who can work with both parties.

Like Bush-Cheney, Hillary has a proven record of secrecy, lies, and prevarication, based on both their natural character and their determination to put partisanship above all else, even the needs of America.

Like Bush-Cheney, Hillary is totally in the pockets of Corporate America, lobbyists, and special interest groups, more than any other candidate, and in the end will always put corporations ahead of the people.

Her claim of "experience" is even more phony than she is. Actually, there is little "job training" available for killer job of being POTUS. The quality of one's intelligence [beyond mere political cunning] and the quality of one's character are of the most crucial importance. And it is bizarrely amusing that she can even mention the word “change” in reference to herself. Hillary is, above all, the same same old same old old.

ron,ct   December 17th, 2007 3:16 pm ET

Hillary Clinton cares only about one thing: becoming president. And she will gladly change her position, her principles, even her name (the Rodham is gone) to get there. There is a reason every Republican asked uses the same adjective to describe her: "formidable." There is no one they would rather face.

Randy S. Lawton, OK   December 17th, 2007 3:15 pm ET

Crocodile tears, anyone?

Steve, Portland, OR   December 17th, 2007 3:14 pm ET

Hmmm. Not only Bill and daughter as well as mother are campaigning for you, now we have your friends as well. I afraid that even with this touch of "the soft side" many of us feel your an "iron maiden" thats not listening to the American citizen in this our hour of need. Why does it take the possible failure of your campaign for you to "get it". We are sick of politicians telling us how it will be. Your supposed to listen to your constituents on how it should be. Something you seem to have a very difficult time doing.

Matthew Sutton, Central Point, Oregon   December 17th, 2007 3:13 pm ET

The Hillary we know is the one running the attack dog negative campaign.

Surrealist, Fort Myers, FL   December 17th, 2007 3:11 pm ET

This warms the cockles of my heart.

But I'm still for John Edwards–he shows enthusiasm, emotion, and heartfelt concern–without staging, or rehearsals. Great try!!!

Bill,ca   December 17th, 2007 3:10 pm ET

wow, now you have lost my vote. I don't what a candidate who want sympathy to be voted for. I think I would love to see a woman president but not this one. Kinda wondering what is up with all these swings!

Robert   December 17th, 2007 3:06 pm ET
