Bill Clinton said Monday he and former President Bush would go on a diplomatic mission if Hillary Clinton became president.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Former President George H.W. Bush has shot down his successor Bill Clinton’s idea of a diplomatic mission under a Hillary Clinton presidency that would send him and other notables abroad to assure other nations that “America is open for business and cooperation again.”

The move came one day after Bill Clinton made the suggestion on the campaign trail in South Carolina, in response to a question from a supporter about his wife’s “number-one priority” upon reaching the White House.

In a statement sent to CNN Tuesday afternoon, former President Bush’s chief of staff Jean Becker said that he “wholeheartedly supports the President of the United States, including his foreign policy. He has never discussed an ‘around-the-world-mission’ with either former President Bill Clinton or Sen. Clinton, nor does he think such a mission is warranted since he is proud of the role America continues to play around the world as the beacon of hope for freedom and democracy.

“President Bush is excited about several of the excellent Republican candidates running for president, and looks forward to discussing their candidacy once the Republican nominee is determined.”

Bill is insuring Hillary's loss! What is he doing???

lol   December 18th, 2007 2:27 pm ET

A clinton running his mouth when its clearly not warranted? Surely you jest?!

That family will say ANYTHING to keep up appearances. Hey Bill, this might be a foreign concept, but telling the truth is the best place to start!!

Carl Belson, Boston, Ma.   December 18th, 2007 2:28 pm ET

No Kidding!!! Former President Bill
Clinton had alot of nerve to suggest
that Former President Bush would have
even considered such a trip. It's the
cheapest of cheap shots against the
current President Bush. Bill Clinton
should be ashamed!!! He should also
apologize!!!

Daniel, NY   December 18th, 2007 2:28 pm ET

Clinton at least got some good news in state polls that were released today, including in places like North Carolina or Missouri where she either leads or is competitive. Full roundup of the 6 general election state polls released today is available here.

Jessey Denver   December 18th, 2007 2:36 pm ET

Poor Bill, he was just tryinng to help his wife's sinking campaign. Oh well! I guest no matter how fast a lie can run, the truth always catches up.

Good try though

JD, Syracuse, NY   December 18th, 2007 2:43 pm ET

Bill Clinton's statement is only logical.

Bush 41 will change his mind if Hillary gets elected. Besides, Bill Clinton helped out in the Katrina and India disasers, per Bush 43's request.

Ron, TX   December 18th, 2007 2:43 pm ET

Well that sure must be embarassing for the Clintons! I've been waiting for Elder Bush to shoot down this idea ever since I first saw Clinton suggest it! How is it, exactly, that Hillary plans on working across party lines when even an ex-President shoots her down?

Oh, and I remember the reason Bill said health care failed: "Republicans were in a vote against [Bill]" phase. Well guess what, Republicans HATE Hillary, too!

How about we elect a President who WON'T inspire the worst in people, who WON'T encourage partisan bickering?

Dryden01, Redmond, WA   December 18th, 2007 2:44 pm ET

On the face of this Bill Clinton claim, it appears that he must be confused once more about what the meaning of is is.

At best, it appears that the Clinton attempt to bypass presidential term limitations by installing his wife in the white house has gone too far astray and that he is having a sort of nervous breakdown by trying to enlist GHWB to salvage it.

He would have been better off trying to use Chelsea instead but would have had to wait a few more years till she was able to qualify by age.

Bill and Hillary are evidently going to have to satisfy themselves with writing the books they have already received millions of dollars for. The unflattering Drudgereport photo of the elderly Hillary suggests she should be checked for heart problems as she didn't look too healthy there.

Obama has their number and will probably not be inclined to have Hillary as his V.P.

Looks like Hillary's vast experience ruining the possibility for healthcare isn't resonating well enough with the public.

The experienced Obama, on the other hand, is no doubt evaluating Oprah for Secretary of State, wondering if she can type, answer the phone, and take shorthand accurately.

CC - Macon, GA   December 18th, 2007 2:48 pm ET

So very, very typical of Bill Clinton who has more brass than anyone else out there in today's world….shame he doesn't have the good manners to first check with people before he says this or that about them.

Jesse, Burnsville, MN   December 18th, 2007 2:48 pm ET

How is Bill going to back-track on this one? He HAS to be trying to get Hillary to lose this campaign!!

That would be fine with me. Any other Democrat gets nominated, I will support them. If Hillary gets nominated, I'm either voting Independent or not voting for President at all (I've voted Democrat my whole life).

Obama/Edwards or Edwards/Obama '08

Joseph W. Mathews, Manchester, VT   December 18th, 2007 2:50 pm ET

Former President George H.W. Bush handled this preposterous proposal of Bill Clinton's correctly. Polite "no go". former President Clinton knows better. This voter can't help but think it's a cheap political trick and does his wife's campaign no good and possibly raises questions of just which Clinton is running.

FYI, like it or not George W. Bush has the final responsibility for foreign and domestic policy until his successor takes office on January 20, 2009.

Before Bill Clinton apologizes for what he said, George W. Bush has to admit his shame for what he has done to damage this country, and apologize for being a worthless dirtbag.

Someone is lying. Either Bill Clinton or GHW-Bush about this.

WHY does it always end-up into a he-said, she-said when the Clintons are involved?

Surrealist, Fort Myers, FL   December 18th, 2007 3:00 pm ET

Haaaaaa….haaaaaa…
Is ANYONE suprised to see Papa Bush is not willing to go out and "mend" the ills of the world created by his progeny?

I can't believe how bold Clinton is. Another good reason why the "Clinton's" should not be in the White House again.

There's no doubt his sense of reality is seriously askew!!

John Edwards–on track with a strong agenda–wouldn't be such a dolt.

Ray, New Brunswick, NJ   December 18th, 2007 3:00 pm ET

This is precisely why I love the Internet. It used to be a time where off the cuff comments like Bill Clinton's could fester in the minds of voters for weeks before a counter response came. Today you say something off the cuff and lesss than 24 hours someone across the country electronically backhands you and publicly tells you to STFU! I've never spoke to you about an around-the-world mission!

Martin Eagle, CO   December 18th, 2007 3:01 pm ET

Really, who is running for president, Hillary or Bill? Do we need another four years of the Clintons. If the Clintons were to win, would we ever really know which president would stand up and speak; Hillary or Bill??

Bill, Bill, Bill. This is very embarrassing for Clinton campaign. First Hillary slips up at the Philadelphia debate and he has been slipping ever since. Enraged Bill Clinton, tries to be the savior of Hillary's past two months of campaign sinking. Most political experts were not thinking that Bill's mouth would be the cons for Hillary but the political baggage he brings. Wow! If I didn't know any better I would think Bill Clinton was working for the Obama campaign. Thanks for lies, Bill! Politics as usual.

Nobama 2008! I love you Bill!

We need you both in the White house.

The 90's were so wonderful and we were so loved.

I honestly don't know who I am more worried about mentally, the bible thumpers supporting Huckabee or the sheep that can't admit when Bill or Hillary blatantly LIE to our faces.

I posted on another blog that I think Bill is purposely trying to get her to lose, so he can "move on" and get a divorce.

Everytime he opens his mouth it hurts her. Maybe we shouldn't complain.

NO more Clinton's or Bush's EVER.

Why is this a bad thing for President Clinton to suggest? Our image abroad has been hurt these past few years and denying that is just being out of touch with reality. I would hope that all past presidents will help which ever candidate is elected. President Clinton was saying what his wife's plan was to rebuild our image abroad. I hope all candidates have a plan to accomplish that. And I hope previous presidents can put politics aside to for the good of our country. President Clinton did that during President Bush Jrs term. Glad to see that divisive politics trumps national interest.

Simon, IA   December 18th, 2007 3:12 pm ET

Rest assured, Bush 41 will do the trip once Hillary is President. Right now, they have to issue such press releases as part of party obligations.

Even McCain and Powell will do that trip. They are all respectable individuals who know Hillary is strong and diplomatic.

theprofessional   December 18th, 2007 3:30 pm ET

Former President Bill Clinton getting called out on lying by another former President? How is this not the biggest story of the day?

Former President Bill Clinton said Monday that the first thing his wife Hillary will do when she reaches the White House is dispatch him and his predecessor, President George H.W. Bush, on an around-the-world mission to repair the damage done to America's reputation by the current president — Bush's son, George W. Bush.

"Well, the first thing she intends to do, because you can do this without passing a bill, the first thing she intends to do is to send me and former President Bush and a number of other people around the world to tell them that America is open for business and cooperation again," Clinton said in response to a question from a supporter about what his wife's "number one priority" would be as president.
…..
Clinton, nor does he think such a mission is warranted since he is proud of the role America continues to play around the world as the beacon of hope for freedom and democracy."

I doubt that if asked HW Bush would refuse a request from the President of the United States any more than Clinton refused to help GW after Katernia.

I feel that Clinton has a viable idea and that he just jumped the gun on this one and blind sided HW, with public attention that HW was not anticipating.

Just cannot understand this. Hillary and Bill Clinton had all the chances in the White House for 8 full years to do something about HealthCare. But both FAILED miserably in getting it done. Period. So this new slogan of Agent of change by her campign is just plain dud, LIE and fooling Americans. Are the democrats so stupid not to see through the hoax of Hillary? Both Bill and Hillary were once in the WhiteHouse, don't forget, they had their chance already, while others did not. So why give another chance to the same Failed duo? Let us put up someone more capable to get things done for the country. Not Hillary and not Bill, who desparately wants to sneak in. When was the last time a Former President of USA got so involved in primaries for his wife, and attacked other honest democrats????

Former President Bush basically stated that 'he is proud of the role America continues to play around the world as the beacon of hope for freedom and democracy"

This is his main reason not to 'support such a mission', he cannot admit his son made such a mess. Also, any favorable comment would be interpreted like supporting a Democrat in the WH, so it was nothing else to expect as response. Bill Clinton has simply challenged him, but the older Bush is what it is : a Republican.

John Smith in America   December 18th, 2007 3:38 pm ET

Well it was nice of Bill to cross party lines and go to Katrina and India as an ambassador of good will for George Dubya.

But Bush the first, a Republican only looks out for his party. Not surprised one bit.

I voted for Bill Clinton in '92 & '96 but I can honestly say that I will never vote for Hillary Clinton. If she is the nominee, I will simply stay home. I simply want to have a democratic nominee that I can trust and be proud to call "our" president.

Does this country want to wake up to more lies, triangulation, and further control of special interests?

Hey Mark from Shreveport … since when is infidelity a serious offense in this country? And what makes you think it's acceptable outside of this country? Have you even ever left Shreveport? Obviously not. Oh and incidentally, it is however a serious offense to have taken this country down the path that Papa Bush's idiot son has. Now that is a serious offense.

Pat,IN   December 18th, 2007 3:44 pm ET

These people are really frightening. Their "media control" is only because they have plenty to hide. If God forbid Hillary gets elected one of the first things she will do is bring back the "fairness doctrine" to silence talk radio and we will be on our way to a dictatorship. There is more than enough reasons from the last time in power for Hillary to be rejected outright let alone be given the Democratic spot in 08.

James, New Haven, CT   December 18th, 2007 3:44 pm ET

So what?

It sounds to me like hysterical Republicans, knowing that their crushing defeat is imminent, are desperate to try and blow the most trivial things up into some sort of scandal.

Obviously (to anyone who has followed the news) Bill Clinton has many times responded to Bush 43's calls to help out with Katrina/Tsunami relief etc. I think that Bush 41, if called upon by the next Democratic President, will respond in kind.

Clinton has floated the idea of various notables (including perhaps Bush 41) being enlisted as unofficial goodwill ambassadors if Hillary is elected. Obviously, it depends on Hillary being elected, and it isn't going to happen until 2009 anyway.

Did anyone expect Bush 41 to commit two years in advance to something that may never happen anyway?

This is a scandal in the same way that hysterical far-right republicans made a huge deal out of "Travel Gate"

Silver Spring, MD   December 18th, 2007 3:45 pm ET

Exactly! Bush senior say he will not help America and the story is Bill Clinton assumed he would. Today's Republican party has sunk so low it is amazing! Priceless example: "How about we elect a President who WON'T inspire the worst in people, who WON'T encourage partisan bickering?

That would mean wipe out all the republican party, that is the only way to stop the partisan Bickering. We hate Hillory so don;t elect her so we can all get along? These people are nuts! No president in history has been investigated more with no tangable results than Bill Clinton. The hatred from the right is unprecidented. COntrast that with the criminal incompetant we have now. No president in history has deserved investigation and gotten so little as this idiot. Yeah BIll Clinton lied about sex and Heroge Bush Lied about treason, Scooter libby lied and commited treason. To a Hillary-supporter, this is political mastery. To re-ignite the Clinton vs Bush mentality, in hopes of getting other Democrats and Independents fired up about GW Bush's poor ratings, and then throw in Hillary's presidency at the fix.

To the rest of us, it looks like the biggest political blunder of the week. GH Bush Sr. would never betray his son and Republican party like that. The Clintons are caught again lying and deceiving the American public, AGAIN! Oh the shame!

vicky,boston,ma   December 18th, 2007 3:49 pm ET

Yah, yah, blah, blah. Since when is this news? The reporter who commented was correct; it's hardball, always has been. Could it be that an overly liberal democrat leaning press is stunned that one of their own would become combative? However, sooner or later, there must be substance, or the newspaper/new outlet looses readers. Gee, could that be happening? The quote that Kerry could have won the swift boat battle is bunk. As they say in court, "the truth is the best defense against libel." Edward is a liar too, and there was not way out of it or he would have released the necessary information to sink the swiftees. The Clintons are liars as well. And unlike 1992, the dissemination of information has too many outlets to control. If she can't figure this out, she's not only a liar, but she's stupid as well.

Don't you people get it? Bill Clinton said former President George H. W. Bush will help fix the damage done to America's reputation by his son, knowing full well that he wouldn't do it. Then when George H. W. Bush says he won't do it, who is it that is going to look bad?

Is it going to be Bill Clinton? No. Is it going to be Hillary Clinton? Again, no. It will be George H. W. Bush. You guys may not like the man, and you may not want to admit it, but Bill Clinton is a very experienced professional politician, and he knows exactly what he is doing.

Hillary Clinton only emulating the Bush administration model with her attack-dog treatment of the press? I don't think so! Hildabeast has raised spinning, distorting, threatening and lying to an unprecedented level of art form previously achieved on once before - by her husband, Bill Clinton, when he was president. What your article tells us is the media is scared to death of the Hildabeast, and doesn't have the guts to cover her like it should. One can only imagin what would happen to the fourth estate if, God forbid, she ever became president.

Unfortunately it took segregationist Governor Wallace to reveal the truth that "there's not a dime's worth of difference between" Republicans and Democrats. The Democrats willingly went along with the War in Iraq, suspension of Habeas Corpus, detaining protesters, banning books like "America Deceived' from Amazon, stealing private lands (Kelo decision), warrant-less wiretapping and refusing to investigate 9/11 properly. QUIRKY QUOTE OF THE DAY -NAP TIME FOR OPIE FANS   December 18th, 2007 4:02 pm ET

MUST BE A GOP TROLL ON BOARD :(

"Looks like Hillary's vast experience ruining the possibility for healthcare isn't resonating well enough with the public.

The experienced Obama, on the other hand, is no doubt evaluating Oprah for Secretary of State, wondering if she can type, answer the phone, and take shorthand accurately."

Posted By Dryden01, Redmond, WA : December 18, 2007 2:44 pm

Or maybe it's doublespeak from an Opie fan who hasn't had his afternoon nap yet!! ;)

John,seattle,washington   December 18th, 2007 4:03 pm ET

Hillary came to mind over the weekend as I watched the Wizard of Oz. Hillary is the Wicked Witch of the West after the ruby slippers. The flying monkeys seemed loyal to her (the media), but after the Wicked Witch of the West went into her meltdown, they all cheered because they were free. Now that's when they made good movies that always seem to come back and reflect what is going on now. I can't wait to get rid of the Clinton's once and for all and sit back and watch the meltdown…..

Honestly, TX   December 18th, 2007 4:03 pm ET

Both Clintons are naive and inexperienced.

Hillary Clinton can't even control her own campaign. Why in the world would anyone consider voting for her?!?!

Danielle, New York, NY   December 18th, 2007 4:03 pm ET

Bill needs to shut up and go to Africa or something until after the Iowa caucus. He is messing stuff up for Hillary. She's the one that has to answer for the stupid things he says at 4am in Iowa today.

HILLARY '08

david burton,des moines,iowa   December 18th, 2007 4:04 pm ET

Comrad Clinton is just taking a page from the Soviet Union under Lenin, Stalin,Kruchev, and all the others including Hugo Chavez and Castro,"Controll the Media" and you win. Eventually all the lies become truths, written in scholl books, and then the Clininists have won. Not one journlists has the cajones to really tell the American people what is actually happening in the reporting of Comrad Clinton. If the light was really shown on Hillary1) record the late night phone calls,2) print the conversations when the pressure is applied BillHillary will not be able look the American People in the eye. Its a shame none of the so called "objective" media will report the truth about BillHillary.

Jeffersonville, IN   December 18th, 2007 4:06 pm ET

Mr. Anderson is a liar and Mr. Clinton has been accused of rape. I don't want either around anything of my family.

Hannah,Iowa   December 18th, 2007 4:06 pm ET

After 7 years of the Bush White House's total lockdown and manipulation of information, it is sad to see hillary's campaign run the same. I know that she wants to be perfect. I know that the press has been hard on the Clintons. But, I think that Hillary is already showing to be the same as a hyper-controlled Bushy, though of a different color. I wish she could try to be different - even take some risk - but appear as more real. The medium is the message. And her medium appears too controlled to be open to new ideas. Chili-Time david, magic johnson is doing it for you.

Cindy   December 18th, 2007 4:08 pm ET

Bill needs to calm down in a retirement community somewhere … the more he talks, the less I want to vote for his wife …

Gus Tijerino, Miami, FL   December 18th, 2007 4:10 pm ET

Slammed that two-timing liberal scum in the mouth like I predicted. Good Job President Bush. Put this idiot in his place. And well said. W has done a great job. I don't care what the media says, he is a great President. Terrorists on the run, sound economy, two countries liberated from tyranny, a safe homeland, North Korea stopping nuclear program, Iran on notice, a real hope for peace between Israel and Palestine, Libya disclosing nukes… And all with a positive attitude and a ready smile… Love ya W!

Jesse, Burnsville, MN   December 18th, 2007 4:10 pm ET

Well, if any of you wanted an example of what Hillary in the White House would be like, here you go. It will be Bill saying one thing, Hillary saying another. Then, they will pick whichever one fits the popular opinion of the minute.

CHANGE! CHANGE! CHANGE! CHANGE! CHANGE! CHANGE! CHANGE! CHANGE!

Obama/Edwards or Edwards/Obama '08

Tammy, Denton, Maryland   December 18th, 2007 4:10 pm ET

Only Bill and Hillary Clinton are dumb enough to believe that H.W. Bush (41) would be willing to trash G.W. Bush (his son - 43) to help Hillary capture the nomination.

Bill and Hillary think everyone is fixated on her desire to win. She fails to realize it's her own personal problem.

We're not all trying to move heaven and earth so that Hillary's lifelong dream of being president can come true.

Hillary is so focused on Hillary and she is so obsessed with becoming president, how could she possibly care about average Americans? She can't. She's only pretending to care.

Sam Lutz, FL   December 18th, 2007 4:11 pm ET

Here we go again with loyalty to the party and more party politics. I'm beginning to think that politicians are running for their respective parties rather than for the interests of the American people. Is this really a democracy, or a modified aristocracy?

Gobama, NY, NY   December 18th, 2007 4:12 pm ET

Blond Emily of DC, one only needs to read the response of daddy Bush to understand why Bill Clinton's idea is a senile one, and harmful to his wife's campaign too: Bill Clinton is unwittingly seeking to extract an admission from the father that the son has screwed up royally America's foreign affairs to the point of it needing to be fixed.

Everyone knows this is true; but not all truths about a son is going to be pleasant for a dad, who will stand by the son at even the cost of the truth.

Karen, Pasadena, California   December 18th, 2007 4:13 pm ET

Wow, this really shows that Hillary Clinton does not have very solid plans even though she keeps telling us she will be 'ready from day one'. If she doesn't even have simple details in place for her 'number one priority', what is she ready for?

Hillary is not a leader. She graduated from Yale at the bottom of her class (without any honors). She married the smartest guy in her class. She ran for senator in New York, a 'safe' Democratic seat. She can't run a campaign. She can't even define herself.

Steve D, Irving TX   December 18th, 2007 4:18 pm ET

Well, I guess what might be good for the country is not as important as partisan politics, for Republicans. I bet Bill would answer that call, if it were reversed. That's why we're getting rid of them!

Nick, Chicago, IL   December 18th, 2007 4:18 pm ET

How sickening ! Nothing for the good of this country , the Bushes forget that Bill Clinton helped them out when GWB looked horrible over the Katrina episode , but like then they won't lift a finger to help our reputation around the world after there son trashed it once again instead of bringing the country together they separate us further apart with there partisan BS. father like son !

Cedric, Waukesha, WI   December 18th, 2007 4:21 pm ET

Bill and Hil just need/want new furniture

Andy, New York, New York   December 18th, 2007 4:23 pm ET

Bill has not only wrongly inferred that America has been closed for business and cooperation under 'Dubya' Bush, but he has insulted 'Dubya's' father, GHW Bush. Starting under the elder Bush and continuing under Bill, America made economic outsourcing a priority so that foreign investors in America were merely looking to buy up real estate or invest in businesses that were already into outsourcing. Economic globalization has taken root and will not turn back, no matter what Bill promises that Hillary will do if elected president. We are now staring at a New World Economic Order under a One World Government, and with Hillary as president, America's economic and military superpower status is doomed. She is a socialist who will help make a NWEO and ONG possible.

RJK Naperville IL   December 18th, 2007 4:25 pm ET

Also, exactly what would they fix - really - what would they do to fix our image and with who? Nobody can directly answer this!

R., Chicago   December 18th, 2007 4:31 pm ET

I note that Clinton has the sense not to suggest sending that fool George W. as an emissary of cooperation and progress. Good lord, I don't think most places would even let the plane land.

Amanda, Chicago IL   December 18th, 2007 4:31 pm ET

Of course the Bushes could never consider doing anything bipartisan for once. Instead of working together for the good of the whole, they place more importance on parties and labels.

Personally, I think the Clintons are old school and boring, but I think Bill has the right idea here when it comes to reaching across party lines.

Sheniqua, South Carolina   December 18th, 2007 4:31 pm ET

Dear Mr. President Clinton:

Now that the Bush crime family has further humiliated you and your beautiful wife Hillary, I just wanted to send you a note letting you know that Al Qaeda and I will always graciously speak with you and your beautiful wife Hillary to discuss ways to improve our relationship with you and others who hate the United States as much as we do. As much as I disagree with most of Obamas socialistic views he's still honest. With the hill-billy duo honesty, ethics, not there. they have no conscience never will admit guilt, only concern is to distroy anything outside of their little world of power, controll and to destroy just a game to them.

Leo, Mesa Arizona   December 18th, 2007 4:45 pm ET

I find it difficult to believe that Bill Clinton even made such a comment to begin with. If this wasn't CNN I would think it is some make believe stunt to spew more bad publicity about Bill and Hillary. I support Obama as the democratic candidate. I find some of the moves made by the Clinton foundation difficult to understand.

Tony, Memphis TN   December 18th, 2007 4:48 pm ET

It was just a simple gaffe; President Clinton and President George H.W. Bush spend a lot of time together and they are friends. They even co-created a relief orginization. Bill simply thought his friend was on his side and would play ball; not really remembering that their 'enemy' is his friends son…

What is more pathetic is the knee-jerk love/hate fanatisism on both sides of the aisle… Grow up and quit being intellectually dishonest…

Jeff, Huntington Beach, CA   December 18th, 2007 4:49 pm ET

People, stop being so small minded. Regardless the motives of Bill Clinton, (and the stupidity of such an idea as this while Bush Sr's son is in office), let us admit that George W has been a disaster. Enough of the petty bickering on both sides. Will we never come to grips that this country and everything it stands for is in trouble and no amount of pretty speeches, guns, bombs, and human lives sacrificed will make things better in the world if there is not a change here at home? Lies, deceit and corporate greed run rampant and the only eventual outcome to this will be the demise of our beloved America. And what kind of a sewer are we leaving our children? Stop taking the mood and mind altering pharmaceuticals (psyche meds) and get real. Wake up before it is too late and realize the joke has been on us.

A.B. North Carolina   December 18th, 2007 4:50 pm ET

What I don't understand is why he is campaining for his wife. Should the dog be out doing it herself? Why in the world would former President Bush help a democrat anyway…it just goes to show that the Clinton's are full of lies and will continue to be.

MC   December 18th, 2007 4:50 pm ET

Shot down? I don't think so! I don't really care what Bush Sr or Jr has to say about anything anymore. His comments at the end are just laughable, what planet is he living on? Get over yourselves…a new day is about to dawn.

AJ; Montpelier, VT   December 18th, 2007 4:51 pm ET

Theresa, Oak Park, IL   December 18th, 2007 4:54 pm ET

Is there any clearer evidence than this latest bungle by Bill that he wants to be co-president with Hillary? Why in world isn't Hillary the one to say what the first thing she'll do as President is? The Clintons are so second rate, it's embarrassing. Enough already!

pamela,derry,nh   December 18th, 2007 4:54 pm ET

Having CHillary as Prez is absolutely chilling. This is a woman with zero moral compass, with such an overwhelming passion for power that she remains wed to a serial philanderer, with a stated intent to pass a scamnesty bill for the millions upon millions of illegal alien invaders (and that, of course, will allow them the drivers' licenses that she NOW claims she will deny them as 'illegals'), with the intent to turn the independent USA into a socialist version of Cuba, and with an absolute aversion for telling the truth. And besides all these terminal flaws, hasn't she - as "co-president" already served and can't be "re-elected"?

Cindy   December 18th, 2007 4:54 pm ET

What about the image of America when Bubba Bill "didn't have sexual relationship with that woman?"

It was disgusting … I need to take a shower …

jeremy,austin,tx   December 18th, 2007 4:55 pm ET

The idea of a Bush/Clinton/Bush/Clinton dynasty is unimaginable. When did we become a monarchy? This may be unconstitutional. Two terms then passed on to the wife? The wife (Hillary) was in the White House during the first two terms and I must assume that since she claims that she is experienced from those years (why else is she not releasing her records) then she must have been the "co-president". Or maybe she's lying again; which would mean she has even less years experience than Obama's 10 years plus as an elected official. Then again, experience is not the issue, I'd take Barack's judgement over Hillary's anyday. When are we going to wake up and stop this!!!

MC Seattle WA   December 18th, 2007 4:55 pm ET

I really enjoyed watching him on tv the other night. It's refreshing to see someone speaking off the cuff and not using cue cards like some kind of robot. Who cares what Bush Sr or otherwise thinks anymore anyway?

rosemergy   December 18th, 2007 4:56 pm ET

Man, yet another misstep for the Clinton campaign. I'm a Bill Clinton fan, but he's helping Hillary zero right now. I was surprised when he originally made the comment — pretty brazen, and it has turned around and bitten him. Not good.

Jerry from Tampa, Florida   December 18th, 2007 5:00 pm ET

I think the Slickster should go it alone and make the trip. There are so many YOUNG ladies he can meet and seduce all at tax payers expense like he did before. At the same time it would be a wonderful opportunity for "President" Hillary to back her moving van up to the White House filled with all the treasure and booty they pilfered from there when they were last evicted. American voters just can't be that stupid to enable such a clown show!

Jim, Denver CO   December 18th, 2007 5:02 pm ET

When will he ever learn?

Lee, Fredericksburg, VA   December 18th, 2007 5:05 pm ET

Am I the only one to see this as a setup by Clinton of the Bushes and Republicans? Clinton knew Bush 41 was going to defend his boy, but how in the world he can say his son is doing a great job and that he is happy about it is beyond me. He is nothing like his son but obviously blood has blinded him to the truth of the mess his son has created for the US and the world. By ignoring the facts he comes across as just another Republican, completely uninterested in doing the right thing which is to restore this country's standing and credibility in the world. This is just more evidence the Republicans need to be retired so that responsible, reasonable, competent individuals can heal, renew and govern this country.

Patsy Atkinson, NE   December 18th, 2007 5:07 pm ET

I tried several times to write something. But I couldn't think of anything good about GB. How could anyone compare him to Bill Clinton is beyond me. GB has done more to hurt America than any person in US history. Clintons little scandel pales in comparison to GB. I would think daddy Bush would be willing to help this country in any way he could. But I guess he just doesn't want to see the mess his son has created.

Who decides what news is worthy to be written and shared with the public? The past story on this topic (about how Bush (Sr.) had supposedly agreed to travel with Bill Clinton on a “reconnaissance”-style mission to rebuild America’s name) was clearly a blatant lie intended to further bash the president of the United States while at the same time promoting the candidacy of Hillary Clinton. How can the already biased news sources maintain their viewers’ trust if they not only present information that highlights only one side of the issues but also broadcast reports that are so misquoted and full of misinformation that they border on deception. The dishonesty in today’s media is startling. The prevalence of mainstream news being used to push agendas causes accurately informed viewers to cringe at the carnage littering the mass media outlets in the name of free speech. How can the providers of such obviously erroneous news maintain any personal integrity for themselves or their trade?

ankur, NY   December 18th, 2007 5:10 pm ET

Tony A, Goodyear, AZ   December 18th, 2007 5:19 pm ET

I am confused as to why former president Clinton would make such a suggestion to include former president Bush. I always thought of Clinton as a brilliant man but if his wife were to become president and such a mission a reality, in the context of its objective, it would be an acknowledgment of bad government on the part of Bush's son. Bush the father would never undermine his son like that.

Bill, Streamwood, IL   December 18th, 2007 5:24 pm ET

Better if they send former president Jimmy Carter. He is held in higher esteem by the rest of the world than Bush 41 or Bill Clinton. It is odd that Carter's own country doesn't have that view. Must be because he is an Evangelical Christian and a Democrat.

Of course the only two flies in the ointment is that: (1) Hillary needs to get the Democratic nomination and (2) she must win the general election.

Mr.Clinton has a bright idea as always , and by the way , I think he is the 3nd. best President we have had lately , you gotta give him credit for the awesome economy the 8 years he is in power and the 1st. surplus in a long time. With all that said , I think he needs to modify the mission a little if indeed Mrs. Clinton become pres. Not a goodwill trip , but a mending-the-relation and building-new-relation trip to countries such as :
1/ North Korean : to make sure the Mad Man do not go back to building nukes again and threaten the whole region again and to help the North Koreans who need the most help right now.
2/ Lybia : to make sure another Mad Man stays inline and continues to behave well and continues to renounce terrorism and also bring a US presence to the new terrorism breeding ground which is Africa.
3/ Poland , Czech , Japan : to make sure we have what we need to build the missile defense that will benefit the majority of the peace-loving nations against future Mad Men. Japan has already seen the benefit of it as they had just succeeded in their recent test.
4/ Irag: to capitalize on the tremendous success we have had since the "PRES.BUSH'S TROOP SURGE" . We finally have a chance to stabilize the country , begin to help them build their country to accommodate for a stream of returning people , help extract Oil so they can pay us back , establish a long-wanting-but-never-able-to-accomplish presence in the middle of the Middle East , right next door to another Mad Man and thus able to keep that Mad man in check.
5/ Taiwan: to help them with their defense against a Mad Country , China that is , from taking over the island-nation and thus threaten the whole region . Also , to help them operate new hardward that Bush has sold them recently and may be to sell them the Missle Defense such as we did with Japan.
6/ Afganistan and Pakistan : to keep Bin Ladin and his cronies and the Taliban in check.
These are the suggestions I think the next president will need to do , to make sure ,us as a nation, can capitalize on a unique opportunity to bring peace to the world by keeping Mad Men at bay and to not only give them carrots but also offer a few sticks when they do not behave ( as that is the only language these bullies understand anyway ). And all these bring to my Point : we would not be in this situation had it not for Bush's determination and shrew and skillful handling of these situations . Disagree with him all you want but future generations will thank Bush deeply for:
1/ Making North Korea give up its Nukes which no pres. is able to do .
2/ braving the storm to bring us a missle defense which the nay-sayers said could not be done.
3/ Scaring the heck out of the MAD MAN Kadafi so that he dropped his guns literally and decided to be our friend instead.
4/ Having the gut to stick to the SURGE which the Dem. said is a sure Failure , well, at least they keep their mouth shut now.
5/ Helping our allies and thus in turn helping ourselves in the case of Japan , Taiwan , Afganistan, Pakistan, Irag…..
Just a few of Bush's stellar accomplishments that people do not give him credits for . AS a Clinton's supporter independent voter , I have to admit that Bush is one of the best thing that happens to us at the right time. No other president could have got the gut to pull thru the criticism as he has , which should give him the standing in my rankings of 3 best presidents in modern time:

Number One: the great communicator , Pres. Ronald Reagan . No one can top his accomplishment of winning the Cold WAr.

Number Two: the Steel-will , gunslinger from Texas , Pres. George W.Bush , whose nerve is actually titanium-plated.

Number Three: The Ivy-league, the Smooth operator from Ark. pres. Bill Clinton , who is the smartest of them all and who gave us the longest economic growth in History .

Hats off to these gentlemen and Good Luck with the mission . Go america ….

W has done a great job. I don't care what the media says, he is a great President…..

LOL!! We dont care what the media says either, but the 70% of Americans who thinks Bush is a dope, now that I listen to.

I think Bush senior is a little to busy making millions of dollar in 'consulting fees' to foreign nations to get involved in actually helping out the USA. He's proud of the US's actions during his son's presidency???? thats just stupid!

…So, in 48 hours, Bill has had to retract his hit on Obama, "I wasn't criticizing him", and now he's been caught out on the Bush/Clinton Post-Hillary-Victory world tour.

It's time for all of them to go - the Bush family, and the Clinton family.

Sending Bush 41 is a bad idea, and a dumb thing for Clinton to say. Bush 41 said his son GW is "honest and decent", but he is neither, so both Bush's are partisan liars. GW should be on trial for his life because some of his crimes caused thousands of innocent deaths, foreign and domestic.

If W has suggested that Al Gore accompany him on a tour back in 2000 saying to the country and the world that there will be no more shananigans in the Oval Office and the U.S. is open for business again, do you think Al would have gone? Of course not. I too have thought that perhaps - even subconsciously - Bill is trying to torpedo Hillary's campaign so when she loses she has no more need for him and asks for a divorce. That's Bill's out to catch all the women who have caught his eye on the campaign trail.

*****Question of the day:

If Bill Clinton thinks his wife is 'the single most qualified person for president in America,' isn't he by virtue of this saying:

1. there are no black men or women in the entire country more qualified than his white, very wealthy wife.

2. there are no Hispanic men or women in the entire country who are smarter than a woman who flunked her first attempt to pass the bar exam.

3. there are no Asian men or women who are more qualified than a woman who last year made a joke about Ghandi having worked at a gas station.

4. there are no lesbian or gay people in the entire country more qualified than a woman who says she wants equal rights for all, bu
