Bill Clinton said Monday he and former President Bush would go on a diplomatic mission if Hillary Clinton became president.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Former President George H.W. Bush has shot down his successor Bill Clinton’s idea of a diplomatic mission under a Hillary Clinton presidency that would send him and other notables abroad to assure other nations that “America is open for business and cooperation again.”

The move came one day after Bill Clinton made the suggestion on the campaign trail in South Carolina, in response to a question from a supporter about his wife’s “number-one priority” upon reaching the White House.

In a statement sent to CNN Tuesday afternoon, former President Bush’s chief of staff Jean Becker said that he “wholeheartedly supports the President of the United States, including his foreign policy. He has never discussed an ‘around-the-world-mission’ with either former President Bill Clinton or Sen. Clinton, nor does he think such a mission is warranted since he is proud of the role America continues to play around the world as the beacon of hope for freedom and democracy.

“President Bush is excited about several of the excellent Republican candidates running for president, and looks forward to discussing their candidacy once the Republican nominee is determined.”

During his first term, didn't Bill Clinton's wife (Hillary) have a DC staff member fired because the staff member was giving computer use advise to Barbara Bush the former first lady?

Slammed that two-timing liberal scum in the mouth like I predicted. Good Job President Bush. Put this idiot in his place. And well said. W has done a great job. I don't care what the media says, he is a great President. Terrorists on the run, sound economy, two countries liberated from tyranny, a safe homeland, North Korea stopping nuclear program, Iran on notice, a real hope for peace between Israel and Palestine, Libya disclosing nukes… And all with a positive attitude and a ready smile… Love ya W"

How do you eat without sticking the fork in your eye?

"Terrorists on the run"

Yes, running after US military and killing them.

"sound economy,"

If you consider a recession to be a sound economy that is...

"two countries liberated from tyranny"

That's HILARIOUS!!!! Afghanistan is a freaking wreck and the taliban is poised to own it again in all of it's heroin producing glory and Iraq just knows a different kind of tyranny.

"a safe homeland"

With the exception of the biggest attack in our history that occurred on the mopes watch, it always has been safe.

"North Korea stopping nuclear program"

Riiiiiight...

" Iran on notice"

Uh-huh...and those whackjobs are just a tremblin' in their boots, right? How exactly are they "on notice"?

"a real hope for peace between Israel and Palestine"

There is NO hope for peace between them, never has been and there never will be until Jesus comes floating out of the clouds. Just because the worst president in our history needs to try and do something/anything to assuage the history books doesn't mean those two will miraculously bury the hatchet...unless it's between each others shoulder blades.

"And all with a positive attitude and a ready smile…"

That's just gas...

Your post should have come with a cover charge and a two drink minimum.

Hillary, hide Bill somewhere he can't be seen or heard. No wonder Al Gore did not want him on his campaign.
He is a liability.
Not that you will win but atleast you will lose with some dignity!!

Among people of goodwill, America has gained goodwill in the last five years.

Among those who support Islamofascism (those who call themselves American and those who don't), of course we are losing goodwill.

The president's primary job is protecting the American people, and Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama would not protect us.

Hillary Clinton is a scary joke that even Democrats with good sense can see is bad for the country and bad for the world.

Mark, Cheyenne   December 21st, 2007 12:54 am ET

Read the story people.

She wanted this to happen for the good of the world – 41 and 42 trying to restore the goodwill that we have lost in the past 5 years.

Bush 41 said no. And that is his prerogative.

Thats the facts.

No one said anyone promised anything.

JHC think for yourselves. No wonder this country is f'ed up, none of you can think.

What if Al Gore were President on 9/11/2001?

Oh wait, he was. At least in the majority of Americans.

Jim C., Brigantine, NJ   December 19th, 2007 7:33 pm ET

What a rare but huge political misstep by Bill. He showed no respect for 41 thinking he was either too dumb or too soft and would let him use him like that. WRONG! He could have been way more tactful. 41 has already indirectly done Hillary a huge service (and the entire country) in the past simply by being honest about where he is on our foreign policy–why push it like this! Really stupid and certainly wreaks of some desperation. Maybe he is seeing his "dynasty" crumble before him right now?

SRK, Graham, Wash   December 19th, 2007 6:43 pm ET

What the coolaid drinkers spout doesn't mean sqwat. Unlike Clinton, Bush made hard decisions, made mistakes for sure, but history WILL see his accomplishments as having made a significant difference for the positive. As for Clinton, well he's still trying to rewrite his since he will be deemed as insignificant in the history books.

Has anyone thought about who is going to pay for this little trip around the world? We all know that it will be our tax dollars used to pay for this trip. California has enough of these problems do we really want this in the white house. It is good to know up front how they plan to spend our tax money and why they feel the need to increase taxes so they can go traveling across the world and eating in five star resturants. I for one am not in favor of this at all.

Pete, Brooks-vegas, FL   December 19th, 2007 5:13 pm ET

Are people serious to think that Bush SHOULD travel with Clinton to fix the worlds issues? The world isn't issue here. Clinton referenced an action for Bush to essentially criticize his own son by 'cleaning up W's diplomacy mistakes'. A pretty low insult if you asked me to do that to my own son.

Clinton is way too smart to spout this without realizing the absurdity of the premise. He obviously wants to enjoy his time alone, and isn't as into Hillary 08 as she is. Plain and simple, and I don't really blame him. He's already been down the highest political road already and has the scars to prove it.

I feel a little bad for Hillary not to see the obvious.

James Paddock, Mukwonago, Wis   December 19th, 2007 5:04 pm ET

I commend former President Bush for his refusal to go on a Diplomatic Mission with Bill Clinton. That would be a no Brainer for Bush to even think of doing something such as that. If he approved of it and agreed to it, he would be playing right into the Clintons hands in attempting to win over the White House again. 8 Years of the Clintons in Washihgton was to long as it was.

Huckabee and Obama might be a good start. The best would be to get someone who has little self interest and the best interest of the nation at heart. RON PAUL is the answer!!!!
As for Bushes, Clintons and their ilk stop using this country for your own profit. For the uninformed, look at the benefits these people all gladly suck up, like Social Security (take but don't pay), Medical (Hillary nmay hate the military but she'll be getting all her medical at Bethaisda, just like Cheney), and need we mention the security. They are all rich enough to pay their own bills, but again they serve their own interests not the nations.

Matthew Chillicothe, OH   December 19th, 2007 3:39 pm ET

This could be the best political trick in history. Old George telling Bill he would do it in a private one on one conversation. Then when Clinton says it to the whole world George Sr. yanks the rug out to make the Clintons look bad. Not saying that this happened but only in the world of politics is it even remotely possible and there still has to be some bad blood from when they ran against each other.Easily could have been the single biggest political betrayal and smartest move in of the entire 08' election. Don't put it past them.

It is very sad indeed that these politicians – past and present – have the faith and trust of so many Americans...you will find after a very simple history lesson that there is NO DIFFERENCE between the "Democrats" and the "Republicans"...check the spending all on its own as an issue and you'll find that they are controlled by those with the money to create their world government. People should look to themselves for the beginning of the clean up that is necessary in American life and foreign policy.

it's not a bad idea that Bill has, given the disaster of the "we're better than anyone' policies by the younger Bush. MOMORY JOLT FOR EVERYONE:

After the tsunami in the Indian Ocean, Clinton and Bush went out, together, and raised terrific moneey for the effort.

Clinton got sick and needed heart surgery, putting him on the shelf for several months. Bush, Sr. continued on the stump and failed to generate the excitement heretofore enjoyed – because Clinton wasn't with him!!!

Clinton comes back, healthy and joins Father of the Stooge and the money starts to pour in, again!

The Clintons are giving this worthless family of opportnists the chance to make good on the incredible damage they, the Bushes, have unleashed on the world!

But, Bush, Sr. says no, and the GOP claims their guy in 2009 will fix it. But, according to the right-wing gasbags on the radio, there are no problems, so what is it flip-flopping right-wingers?!?!?!

By the way, Bush, Jr., aka Jet-Pilot, has assured huge Democratic victories for years to come at the national level with his brand of failed, foreign policy!!!

Keith W. Molalla, OR   December 19th, 2007 11:18 am ET

The best thing Hillary can do to elect a republican is to keep letting her man flap off at the mouth. He's not a help to the campaign at all. It makes her look like a weak woman who sends in her big bad tough hubby when the road gets rough. Not at all presidential.

DRH, New Bern, NC   December 19th, 2007 10:50 am ET

If Bill goes abroad, where will all these countries hide their wives and daughters?

Richard, West Palm Beach, FL   December 19th, 2007 10:49 am ET

"If we take a look at the years former President Clinton was in office the foregn policy put implace was worse."

Dream on. On September 11, 2001 Bush had the sympathy and an unprecedented amount of support from most of the world. He had the opportunity of a lifetime to bring the world together to work to combat terrorism. Look at how completely he has bungled this opportunity. Because of their support of Bush, it is likely that major supporters like Great Britain and Austalia have replaced their leaders. Don't fantasize that this colossal failure had anything to do with Clinton.

Rich, Sacramento California   December 19th, 2007 10:48 am ET

Ooops – they did it again.

It wasn't exactly a lie, but it was a very clever, manipulative, deceitful statement. Exactly what we know we can count on from the world's foremost pathlogical liars – Hill-Billy Clinton.

twb , Detroit, MI   December 19th, 2007 10:42 am ET

Bill Clinton, like his wife, is nothing more than a political operative. Everything these two do is heavily analyzed for its potential impact on their popularity. They care less about this country and its people than their own power-hungry ambition. For all of the bashing of GWB that goes on, little substance is offered as to what exactly he had done that is so bad. Virtually everyone in a position of power acknowledged that Saddam Hussein was a nasty dangerous tyrant that had to be dealt with eventually. Congress voted to give Bush the power to oust Hussein. Iraq has been a costly struggle but, to be fair, Bush never said it was going to be easy–he, in fact, said it would be very difficult. GWB's tax cuts have stimulated six years of economic growth and record tax receipts to the U.S. Treasury at the same time. The latest IRS data shows the top 5% of income earners are paying a higher percentage of the nation's income taxes than BEFORE Bush's tax cuts. This is exactly opposite of what the mainstream press has led us all to believe. GWB is far from perfect; then again, so are the Clintons, Gore, Edwards, Obama, etc.

Reality Bytes, Oradell, NJ   December 19th, 2007 10:38 am ET

So to sum this all up: "READ – MY – LIPS! Not gonna do e. Idea is BAD – BAD! My son the President – GOOD!"

I guess Ol' George 41 didn't get the memo.

And Team Clinton tries to equate themselves as a dynasty approaching the accomplishments of the Bush family. Don't flatter yourself. Now, Huey Long, now there's a someone you have things in common with.

Pam   December 19th, 2007 10:33 am ET

President Clinton just said it was an idea and a suggestion. He never said that Bush Sr. agreed to it. Don't you people read the articles before you comment??? Plus Bush no. 1 wasn't very popular abroad any more than his son is. He had a lousy foreign policy record and started the first Gulf War. He though was smart enough to know not to go into Iraq.

P.S. I don't dislike Bush Sr., in fact I like him a whole lot better now that he isn't President.

May Pinkham   December 19th, 2007 10:26 am ET

Bill ensuring Hilary's loss? No kidding!
What is he doing? Ensuring her loss!

Remember at the beginning of his presidency when he sent her off to do the health care bill? He knew it would fail, but it would keep her busy, and guess what, he really "wanted" her to fail – he did it accidentally on purpose. You think he loves her? You think he wants her off getting busy! You bet, gives him time for his hobbies and makes him look extra good!

Kathy Los Angeles   December 19th, 2007 10:25 am ET

I cant' stand watching him campaign for her - he looks desperate and he's making her look unable to stand up for herself. I guess he knows she's a weak candidate on her own.
He needs to give it a rest - it's embarassing.

Pam   December 19th, 2007 10:24 am ET

Bush Senior wasn't much of a foreign policy guy either. Why would we be surprised?

Sean Shamus   December 19th, 2007 10:20 am ET

Everytime Bill Clinton opens his mouth it reminds me of all the things I detest about the Clintons. The main thing is the absolute inability to tell the truth. And to think I was contemplating voting for Hillary. God forbid!!!!

Nancy Washington, Raleigh, NC   December 19th, 2007 10:07 am ET

HILLARY 'STINKS' WORSE THAN OBAMA, AND BILL CLINTON KNOWS IT. BILL CLINTON WAS AN EMBARRASSING LIAR WHEN HE WAS PRESIDENT, HIS WIFE IS WORSE. THEY DIDNT GET THE NICKNAME, 'SLICK' FOR NOTHING. THIS TIME, OL BJ, YOU BLEW IT, NO PUN INTENDED. WE WANT A PRESIDENT THAT WE CAN TRUST, AND THE CLINTONS ARE THW WORST EVER.

Tom - Dedham, Mass   December 19th, 2007 10:03 am ET

I am again aghast at what democrats consider OK. Bill spouts a blatant LIE and they ignore it to rant on about whatever is on their mind. you know who you are.
YOU have no shame and very little intelligence as well.

Posted By G Wayne, Houston, TX : December 19, 2007 8:34 am

Thank you Wayne for writing what the Clintonista's choose to ignore and as usual it is the TRUTH.

The FACT or the POINT of the story here is that Bill spoke of Bush Sr. basically already accepting an invitation to travel the world with Bill and fix everything under Hillary's guidance.

Never was discussed and that makes it a LIE.

Glenn, Rochester, NY   December 19th, 2007 10:00 am ET

She said that's what she WOULD do; she didn't say she had even discussed it w/Bush Sr.

Besides I agree with all the other posts; why do we care what the rest of the rest of the world thinks of us!? Screw them; WE'RE the leaders of the free world. U-S-A! U-S-A!

Brent, Jacksonville FL   December 19th, 2007 9:58 am ET

I find it funny how the Bush bashers come out and side step the issues and push them on President Bush. If we take a look at the years former President Clinton was in office the foregn policy put implace was worse. You can't build a house on sinking sand. GWB is only trying to work with what "I did not have sexual relations with that woman" left him.

Greg, Jacksonville, Florida   December 19th, 2007 9:51 am ET

Bush Sr. surely must be aware of the damage his son has done to this country that must be cleaned up, even if he doesn't acknowledge as much publicly. I mean, is there anyone left out there who really likes Dubya and thinks he has done an admirable job??

Greg mt,clemens mi   December 19th, 2007 9:50 am ET

they call this guy slick willy but he really isnt that slick at all. he is very mean spirited really and looks very unhealthy.his antics will help the republicans hold on to the white house however so keep it up Willy!

Vince, Rapid City SD   December 19th, 2007 9:30 am ET

It was pretty low, and somewhat desperate of the Clinton clan to use the current President's Dad to undermine the current administration's foreign policies for political gain.

Mary, Houston, Texs   December 19th, 2007 9:29 am ET

With all due respect, Americans are just holding their breath until we can be RID of the Bush family.....ALL of them.

George Bush Sr's comment denying his willingness to help the next president on behalf of the country.....regardless of party....clearly shows us what we need to know.

He'll be planting seeds elsewhere for Jeb or one of his grandsons instead.

Country be dammned, eh?

More proof positive that the truth is relative to the Clintons. In other words, it 'is' whatever they make it up to be....depending on what what your definition of "is" is!

Larry, Houston TX   December 19th, 2007 9:04 am ET

So, Bill Clinton did not answer the person at the Hillary rally truthfully, because Bill had never even consulted George H. W. Bush about this hair-brained "round-the-world to apologize for lil Bush" scheme. When are Bill and Hillary going to learn that words mean things, and that they shouldn't lie just to pacify the immediate audience. It reminds me of when Hillary decided to tell a reporter that she was named for Sir Edmund Hillary, who was famous for being the first person to scale Mt. Everest, when in fact Sir Edmund hadn't even climbed Everest until some time after Mrs. Clinton was born!

Thomas, Newport, NC   December 19th, 2007 8:55 am ET

I pray daily that both the Dems and the present group of Repubs fall to the side and a non-Politiction decides to step up and be a competent administrator and CEO for the country. While I don’t trust the present group of Repubs running, I flat out fear what the Dems will do to this country. I truly believe most of us could do a more honest and open job of running this country then any of the professional polititons we have in DC at this time. If we made mistakes at least we would be open about them and try to get the situation corrected.

Gerry Carter, Florida   December 19th, 2007 8:54 am ET

Half you people have so much hatred for former Pres. Clinton that you missed the whole point of the mission. This was a good idea. It would help our position in the world and improve Americas image through out the world.

Seam, Philly PA   December 19th, 2007 8:50 am ET

This goes to show you that Republicans are not willing to work with Clinton. Hillary will further divide the country with the same old politics as usual. We need real change from a leader that can truly bridge gaps and earn respect. End the family dynasty of the past 25+ years. Vote Obama 08'

Albert, Indianapolis, IN   December 19th, 2007 8:48 am ET

I have become a minority. I still support the president, as I did Clinton, and as I will the next president, democrat or republican. You people need to get a grip. We have the democrats running against GW and the republicans running against Hillary. GW isn't running and Hillary may not get the nomination from her party. All I see here is a bunch of bashing from both sides. I will vote republican, no matter who wins the nomination. Not because I think they are anymore honest than the democrats, I just see that they know how to rule. The current congress shows it. You have a minority calling the shots in the house. When the dems were in the house this would have never happened. Yes, I'll stick with the republicans until a better option comes along, maybe a libretarian.

charles hauser, Columbus Ohio   December 19th, 2007 8:47 am ET

The Bush comment is a distraction from a deeper problem.

Bill/Hill's campaign decided to try to one up Obama's idea of talking to foriegn leaders with a petty my quip – "my friends are bigger than yours."

The problem is that the "Emperor with no Cloths" has lost his magic to deceive the public. Now he's just one more obnoxious big mouth whose primary interest is adding more feathers to his already comfortable nest.

Viking, East Lansing, MI   December 19th, 2007 8:41 am ET

Bill and Bush 41 are friends. They've worked on Katrina Relief together, so anyone who thinks that Bill doesn't know how Bush truly feels is naive or blinkered. I bet they discussed something like this, and all Clinton did was jump the gun. Big deal.

It's also hilarious to see people here blame Clinton for this, that, and the other. We had a healthy economy during his terms, we had a strong dollar, a cleaner environment, more cooperation with other countries, and the respect and admiration we had rebuilt after Vietnam. All that is lost.

Joe Drager NYNY   December 19th, 2007 8:41 am ET

Rudy Ryan, Knoxville, TN   December 19th, 2007 8:05 am ET

Bill Clinton has long ago proven he has no shame. He will say or do anything to get what he wants. Have we heard Hillary object to what he said? She and he are a team. Does anyone in their right mind want years of this team again running our country?

John D North Haven, CT   December 19th, 2007 8:02 am ET

And then the Democrat who will replace him will start cleaning up the mess he made.

Posted By Wayne, Greenville TX : December 18, 2007 2:57 pm

What mess? A safe nation again? I have not heard of anymore embassy bombings, no more Navy Ships bombed, and NO MORE BUILDINGS in the USA being bombed. Those things don't happen when you keep your enemy on the run. Not to mention the domestic side unemployment the lowest in a decade, Inflation under control and some of the lowest interest rates in our history. This will all come to an end if the TAX and SPEND LIBERIALS get in office.

President Bush Senior has it right, go home Bill and lie to us no more.

GES, Brooksville, Florida   December 19th, 2007 7:59 am ET

It is so funny to hear Democrats talk about corruption...but at least it comes from experts. Harry Reid, scandal selling government land cheap to a friend. Nancy Pelosi Violating enviromental laws in her husbands development...all covered up by the drive by media. We have Abscam specialist "Jack (our Marines are murders) Murtha, felon Alcee Hastings (Bribery) of Florida and the ever Famous Barney ( I didn't know my boyfriend was running a brothel out of our apartment) Frank. This is the Democratic leadership....members of Nancy Pelosi's most ethical congress in history.....well, I feel better now...could someone please define the word "IS"?

bob massachusetts   December 19th, 2007 7:53 am ET

Former President Bush still has a chief of staff? Chief over what staff.
And which bush are they referring to when they say "President Bush is exicited..."?
Worse type of politics. Print as much crap as possible and then flip a coin to see whose paying attention.
Heads says All of the Bushes and Clinton's will still have their gubby paws on anything that has to do with our country. They did their time – move on.

Willy, Chesapeake,VA   December 19th, 2007 7:43 am ET

The Clinton's; Democrats tried scrubbing, soaking and even flames but you still can't get that stain out.

Jimmy Jenkins, Roswell, GA   December 19th, 2007 7:13 am ET

The Clintons will continue to make one ill-advised comment after another because they are never held accountable for anything they say or do.

Mary, Beaver, PA   December 19th, 2007 7:13 am ET

And did you really think that the elder Bush was going to go along with this obvious jab at his own flesh and blood? The Bushes and the Clintons are both disgraceful, and it's high time we relegated them to the pages of history.

juspasntru, Orlando FL   December 19th, 2007 6:58 am ET

The Clinton's are doing the same old thing. They say what they think will get them votes without regard to consequences or impacts on others. Go Obama!!!

Anne, Virginia Beach, VA   December 19th, 2007 6:53 am ET

Bill Clinton may be a dog, but he's a brilliant politician. Of course he doesn't want to spend the next 4 years under scrutiny and unable to play around without being watched every minute. Anyone who can't see he's trying to deep-six Hillary's campaign is naive.

Robert, Palm Coast, Florida   December 19th, 2007 6:36 am ET

Yes, Clinton will accompany Bush '41 at the request of the next Republican President to maintain the strength of the USA under Bush '43. Now that makes sense.

PKahnPie   December 19th, 2007 6:29 am ET

How does anyone; after 8 years of this man and his inability to tell the truth about anything, believe what he says? Has this nation lost it's collective mind? Bill and Hill are crooks, the biggest to have ever lived in the White House. Accusations of rape, lost billing records showing up in their living quarters after two years, firing people to replace them with his cousin, money from China to line their pockets, two years getting his bone smooched in the Oval Office while terrorist were plotting another attack on America...it never ends with him and maybe soon...Hillary and Blll again. Lets stop the madness.

Alex H, West Linn, OR   December 19th, 2007 6:21 am ET

Wow. Are you guys getting paid to say this, or are you all really that dense?

Bill wants to do damage control on America's image abroad. Because of W's disastrous foreign policy, this country's once-favorable reputation in the world has been utterly ruined, so that damage control is in dire need.

HW, meanwhile, seems to be suffering from dementia in his old age, being "proud of the role America continues to play around the world as the beacon of hope for freedom and democracy", which it most certainly does not thanks to his criminal son's actions.

Bill speaks the truth. HW speaks of delusion. You guys... I dunno, but I hope none of you are voting.

Got to hand it to Bill Clinton for once, his political theater is certainly entertaining.

The only thing that can beat it is if Hillary manages to find a way to take the oval office.

Not good for the country, but I for one look forward to the entertainment.

Anonymous   December 19th, 2007 4:29 am ET

These comments represent Bill Clinton’s undisciplined, arrogant, and self centered behavior which will be on display for the world to see during the election. He will not be reigned in despite the Hillary Clinton campaigns best efforts because his ego will not allow it. It will be very amusing to watch him during the campaign because he no longer has a compliant media that will ignore his half truths and he and Hillary still have not figured out how to handle the internet and Mat Drudge.

Mudhen Chris   December 19th, 2007 3:48 am ET

I am no fan of reality either Bill, but there are those times when we are bound by its constraints.

Dinh, honolulu , hawaii   December 19th, 2007 3:32 am ET

the elder Bush is right . In my opinion , these are the 3 best presidents in modern time:

Number One : Ronald Reagan , the great communicator , you gotta give him credit for Stared down the Evil Empire and won the Cold WAr for us . He is the Greatest .

Number Two: George W. Bush , the Gunslinger from Texas whose nerve is actually Titanium-plated , who got us the Missle Defense , Stared down Mad man after Mad Man such as Kadafi , Saddam, Kim Jong-il , Bin Ladin and the like.

Number Three: Bill Clinton , the Ivy-league , smooth operator from Arkansas , who got us into the longest economic boom of history .

Hats of to the gentlemen and the great jobs they did.

Suzanne, scottsdale, az   December 19th, 2007 3:24 am ET

I guess Bush wouldn't do it even for the good of our country. He'd rather keep the hate going.

Dinh , honolulu hawaii   December 19th, 2007 3:23 am ET

Kudos to the former president . He is right . There is nothing wrong with America's image . All who criticize Bush have to remember that :
1/ Bush is the one who pushed thru the missle defense that the nay-sayer said would not work , well, Japan has just shown us how happy they are after their successful test . The rest of the world will be too in the next decade , and Americans a generation from now can't thank Mr. Bush enough for that .
2/ Bush is the one who scared the heck out of Kadafi that Mr. Mad Man all of a sudden decide to drop his Gun (Nuke-gun that is ) and be our friend instead .
3/ Bush is the one who took out Hussein, thus relieved America , Irag and the rest of the world of another Mad Man fully capable of murdering thousands if not Millions of innocent people with a blink of an eye.
4/ Now , listen to this, Bush again , is the one who STARED down Mad Chairman Kim Jong-Il while NOBODY , Amrican or any one else , ever could , and see how polite Mr. Chairman is now , and I bet you that he will live up to his promise for the first time in last 2 milleniums to dismantle his Nukes , how about that for a change? .
5/ Bush is also the one who got another Mad Man , Bin Ladin to run for his life and though with the millions of money that he has, unable to freely rent an apartment and thus has to resort to Fox Holes in Afganishtan or maybe Pakistan instead .
6/ Mr. Bush is also the one who stood up to Congress for our Troops , thus allow them the chance to at least finish their mission and go home as victors rather than coming home in shame as our worth Vietnam Vets did . Remember folks , we were not defeated by the Vietcong , nor the Russian , we were defeated by our Jane Fonda, our John Kerry , our Arm-chair Generals who have neither the skill nor the guts to see a mission to the end , who rather called it quit and go home before long . Well, Anyone remember how our intelligent Senators all but 100% sure that the SURGE WILL NEVER WORK , well , at least they shut up on that for now.

To sum up my Points, disagree with Mr. Bush all you want but future generations give him the dues that a lot of us deny him today . Harry Truman was never loved in his days anyway , nor was Abraham Lincoln . I rest my case.

Kris in Atlanta   December 19th, 2007 1:46 am ET

What a blunder. Bill should no better than anyone what a lousy, dishonest president Bush Part 1 was and you don't need a thouand points of light to point out that insinuating the senior Bush will somehow have a part in a future Clinton presidency makes many people uneasy. If he's gonna hire Bush 1, then he may as well make Bush some sort of ambassador. Let's face it, the only good Bush is a beer and when this arduously long Bush presidncy is over, no one wants a repeat.

nostraboris   December 19th, 2007 1:20 am ET

Tom Strongsville, Ohio   December 19th, 2007 12:56 am ET

Wow, the arrogance and concite is absolutely breathtaking..that Bubba Bill would consider such an idea in the first place. What on earth was he thinking?..the dems must be nuts to even consider Hillbillery for their party's presidental candidate, at this point.

Steve, Iowa.   December 19th, 2007 12:49 am ET

Why don't the Clinton's leave politics and star in a reality show. These two just can't help themselves. Too funny. I bet some how the Clinton's and their hangers on, yes CNN I am talking about you, will blame Bill's lie on G. W. Bush.

Momaduke, Farmington NM   December 19th, 2007 12:40 am ET

um, is Bill or Hillary running for President??
I am also dumbfounded..if the wife (significant other) of the President has so much power, then shouldn't we be looking more closely at the spouses? Gee, I thought I was voting for a President, not the spouse. I'm a little put off that Clinton supposedly gave Hil so much power when he was Pres. We did not elect her back then (AND WE SHOULD NOT NOW OR EVER) What if the future Presidents give their spouses control as well?

Karl, Atlanta, Ga.   December 19th, 2007 12:38 am ET

It's a good thing this lie was not under oath. Then Clinton would have to lose his law license for another 5 years.

Emily, Atlanta, Ga   December 19th, 2007 12:32 am ET

Bill Clinton has really been making himself look like a fool these past few months and it is killing his wife's campaign.

Daniel, NY   December 19th, 2007 12:28 am ET

A new Iowa poll was just released, and the news isn't that great for Clinton. But stunningly, it's now Edwards who comes out in top, for the first time since August! Link.

Gracey Knowle, Dallas, Texas   December 19th, 2007 12:27 am ET

So either Bill (let's face it, Hillary isn't the one running here) discussed the idea with George senior first, in which case George senior is lying, or Bill plans to reintroduce the draft, starting with George senior.

Which is it?

Jose Card   December 19th, 2007 12:23 am ET

Hillary must really feel the heat from Obama now. She has Bill out warning the voters, "Be aware of that risk." If Bill were somebody with a little credibility, it might have helped.

If Bill were really as smart as he claimed to be, he should jump the ship now. President Obama may give him a diplomatic mission away from Hillary.

One big problem is that Bill is not a respectable former president. Sending him overseas won't help. On the other hand, Jimmy Carter is well respected as he is genuinely interested in the welfare of BOTH men and women.

Mario Uy Streamwood IL   December 19th, 2007 12:13 am ET

Don't you guys get it? You are forgetting that Bill is way too intelligent to make such an egregious error. This is a well thought out plan. Under the guise of campaigning for Hillary, he does things ever so subtle to sabotage her chances of winning. He does not really like Hillary to win because he is afraid that she might overpower his legacy. Get it?

J. Abraham, Zachary, LA   December 19th, 2007 12:11 am ET

Well, hasn't the elder Bush been seen doing diplomatic work with Bill Clinton? They are just taking advantage of that real good. That's what the Bush family gets for carousing with the enemy in my opinion. A man can't pick up hot coals without getting burned!

Mario Uy Streamwood IL   December 19th, 2007 12:06 am ET

Be kind to Hillary. Hillary did not authorize Bill's comments in as much as she did not authorize Shaheen's comments.

Tarry   December 18th, 2007 11:53 pm ET

I've never seen an ex-president continue to dis-respect a sitting president like we've seen with Bill Clinton Whether you like Bush or not he's still the President, just like Clinton was at one time and we respected and tolerated his escapades.
The bottom line is the nation has Clinton Fatigue. Hillary is not a good candidate and everyone knows it, but them. When you stand Hillary next to a charismatic Edwards or Obama the decision is easier for me to make my choice. All the comments we post on these boards are monitored to get the pulse of the voter by the candidates. Its time the Clinton Camp "fold'em" and get out of the way of the other candidates

Gerard Mendes porterville,ca   December 18th, 2007 11:52 pm ET

This rates right up there with-"I didnt have sex with that woman" I cant wait for more of his 'real' life commentary.

Jose Card   December 18th, 2007 11:43 pm ET

This is probably what really happened. Hillary knows the first thing she needs to do in the White House is to send Bill 'away and far away' from the interns. She knows Bill too well to keep him around so she made a deal with him.

On the other hand, Bill has to find an honorable reason for him to go away – on a so-called diplomatic mission. I don't know if taxpayers are paying for his trips. If yes, that would be even sweeter.

Obviously, Bill is lying again. Why would senior Bush want to go on a trip to listen to Bill bashing his own son?

Here is again a serious problem of having a dynasty. It's high time for a "Constitution Amendment that limits the presidential terms for the same couple". Our founding fathers had never thought of women working outside of their homes and voting or running for president.

If you compare Bill or Hillary with an uprising popular statesman, Dr. Ron Paul, he really should go hiding and stop spreading more shame around the globe. He is the most disgraceful former president in history. Let's not repeat what damage he caused during his presidency.

JElias, Lake Jackson, TX   December 18th, 2007 11:40 pm ET

He can't be so arrogant and thick as to think Bush the elder would insult his own son to help Hllary out. Did he really expect silence from GHWB? To both questions, the answer is: Not likely. So, what's he up to? The man is devious, hypocritical and ad nauseum....but he is not stupid.

TN   December 18th, 2007 11:39 pm ET

Come on people!!!!

Bill's comment just highlighted how out of touch the Republicans are: they are left to defend Bush's record on international diplomacy - they really can not afford to be seen as defending W's record and in forcing them to stand up on that Bill highlights his own glistening record on that front...

It's not a misstep...if we want change we DO INDEED need to repair our relationships abroad.

"Economy doing well, no attacks on the US soil, outrageous liberal legislation vetoed, etc…yet people still scream how he is so stupid".

Amazing. Blind Bush supporters totally ignor that he has increased our national debt by 50%. Mindlessly, they will complain anytime anyone talks about actually paying for it. How ridiculous can you be to think you are better financially if your debts increase 50%?

Bush completely failed to prevent the FIRST attack on US soil and there is no reason to give him credit for preventing another one. Is there ANYONE who thinks Bush is keeping illegal foreigners from entering our country EVERY day? This is the same guy who fought to turn port operations over to an Arab company, fought against increased inspection of incoming shipments, and hasn't caught bin Laden and "isn't that concerned" about him. Dream on while you read "The Pet Goat" with him!

Chris, Springfield, IL   December 18th, 2007 11:19 pm ET

Good. Bill Clinton must be going senile. That was about the most insulting invitation he could have given. George Bush, Sr. is a good guy and shouldn't have to put up with a sleaze like Bill.

But thats good ol Bill!!!

Not sure why Bill thinks we need to have our creds improved in the world. Germany seems to like us now. The French Pres who was just elected campaigned on his desire to improve relations with the US, and has made favorable comments since being elected. Seems like the only countries that think the way Bill thinks are Russia(still pretty communist) China definitely communist and most of the radical muslim nations who really just want us dead. If you ask me our credibility around the world is in fime shape

Those Clintons are not only arrogant but not exactly the sharpest tools in the shed to think Bush senior would approve of his trashing his son's presidency. Although Clinton failed to act on Al Quaida and Bin Laden after the USS Cole and the first bombing of twin towers ... his administration was not another disaster like Carter's with runaway inflation, double digit interest rates and a ruinous foreign policy (IRAN) which we are still trying to recover from.

TR Camden De   December 18th, 2007 10:58 pm ET

As an African American male I feel that this country is looking for any excuse not to elect a great black man as president. The Clintons can promote lies and constant racial slurs about Obama on CNN and nobody says anything. Bill Clinton has lied everyday and noone questions him on it. This country is a joke. I have noticed the media pusing Edwards for the last 2 weeks. This country will be in the same predicatment 4 years from now and the people will be begging for Obama in 2012. This country does not deserve Obama. They want to continue the political bickering. Hold your head up Obama!

All those old rabid Clinton haters still around and posting here it looks like. Y'know every time I read the bile the spews from their twisted mouths I realize that there really is a qualitative difference between Rupublicans and Democrats. You people make me sick. I, for one, suspect that Bush Sr. did indeed make some sort of comments like this to Clinton but Sr. backed off when it was made public so as to save his son the embarrassment. Why do I think that? Because who in their right mind would be '100% supportive' of Jr's wretched excuse for "foreign policy" even if he were related? Who was it in Canada that called Jr. a Moron? You bozos, on the other hand, are the same ones who tore the country apart because of something someone did in his private sex life and because he would not just roll over for the dog and pony show you made of it – but you are willing to let boy George's countless real criminal offenses go. Oh, sorry if I offended. How's it feel.

ted billings, montana   December 18th, 2007 10:51 pm ET

You just gotta love lousy CNN for yet again giving slickwillie his out by mischaracterizing what he said as "an idea", "a suggestion".

Clinton said 'his wife "INTENDS" "is GOING to" send him and Bush...' – sounds to me like Clinton is intimating this has been set up and all that needs to happen is for his wife to be elected President.

So the Clinton News Network instead of calling it the lie it was now provides Clinton the ability to squirm out of the lie by saying "oh, that was just a thought I had".

Scott, Ashland, Ohio   December 18th, 2007 9:55 pm ET

Besides the fact that Bush 41 shot this down, let's not forget what the question that Bill was answering...WHAT IS PRIORITY NUMBER 1 FOR HILLARY WHEN SHE'S PRESIDENT...

Really? Sending these 2 old guys out is priority number 1? Even if Bush would go along with it (which he never would per the inference), the answer to the question is ridiculous. I can think of about 100 more important things to do before this would take place.

Hillary will lose the nomination, there's been a shift. I'm not even sure if Bill wants here in there.

Trang, Fremont, CA   December 18th, 2007 9:54 pm ET

Bill, you should have checked w/ HW Bush before making a statement that involving him.

It's a good idea, however, I don't know what Hillary has to do with it.

I mean, if someone other than Hillary gets nominated, would you refuse to go because it's not Hillary? If someone other than Hillary gets nominated, would you refuse to help them when asked? Is the only way to access to you is through Hillary? I doubt this. You like people. You like to be helpful. You like to build a good legacy for you.

I love how people say how stupid W is. How retarded he is, how bad he did in school. Thing is...if he is so stupid and retarded, then why does he keep winning? two elections won, and yes, it was proved that he did in fact win, Iraq funding secured, Economy doing well, no attacks on the US soil, outrageous liberal legislation vetoed, etc...yet people still scream how he is so stupid. I mean really, how can such a stupid person cause so much grief within the Dem party? How can such a stupid person keep the democrats at bay for 8 years? And if he is so stupid, then what does that say about the Dems that voted for Iraq that said they were duped into voting? Even Hillary admitted she was tricked (paraphrase) into voting for Iraq before she was against it, but not really against it, until Bill siad he was against it from the start, wait, no thats not accurate either. I cant keep track of those two. How can such a stupid person fool such supposedly smart liberals? Maybe he isnt so stupid afterall and actually has the Dems by the balls?? How else do you explain their support for the wiretapping, the war, etc...and now they even capitulated with the Omnibus bill that meets the Presidents funding levels?
wow, amazing how stupid he is.

Janette   December 18th, 2007 8:36 pm ET

I can't help but chime in again.

Former President Clinton tried unsuccessfully to help his wife's campaign. Sadly, he made "undecided" voters wonder about the legitimacy of her candidacy. Certainly his remarks about former President Bush joining him as ambassadors for the U.S., were premature, at best, and embarrassing for the Clinton campaign.

His remarks simply underline my decision to not vote for his wife. I'd prefer Obama first, but would vote for anyone other than Hillary in the general election.

Think, people, think!!

"He has never discussed an ‘around-the-world-mission’ with either former President Bill Clinton or Sen. Clinton"

Someone is lying. Either Bill Clinton or GHW-Bush about this.

WHY does it always end-up into a he-said, she-said when the Clintons are involved?"

ORANGEBURG, South Carolina (CNN) – Former President Bill Clinton said Monday that the first thing his wife Hillary will do when she reaches the White House is dispatch him and his predecessor, President George H.W. Bush, on an around-the-world mission to repair the damage done to America's reputation by the current president — Bush's son, George W. Bush.

"Well, the first thing she intends to do, because you can do this without passing a bill, the first thing she intends to do is to send me and former President Bush and a number of other people around the world to tell them that America is open for business and cooperation again,"

Cindy, Scarsdale, NY   December 18th, 2007 8:19 pm ET

I think this is a deliberate strategy. Hillary's campaign is starting to sink like a stone now that Obama's numbers are rising. The contrast between his high road tactics and her devious old-style politics couldn't be starker, and folks just don't like the ugliness in this particular campaign.

Don't think for a moment that Bill Clinton is so stupid as to promise a major international relations initiative without having cleared it with George Bush Sr. It was just a fake claim. The Clintons wanted George Bush Sr. to disavow any such thing very publically and embarrass the Clinton camp. This is a very disingenuous ploy to have a non-Hillary reason why her Presidential bid failed "this time." It's all "Bill's fault", not Hillary's. This fable preserves her option to try again in four years.

Hillary has staged another campaign event for her "Hilly Copter Trail of Tears" tour, this time carefully staging a "reunion" with her long-lost Sunday School Teacher in a firehouse in Iowa.

The event was staged to make it appear that Clinton was "surprised" to see her old Sunday School Teacher in the firehouse. The two hugged. The Teacher, Roaslie Bentzinger, even brought a photo of Hillary's confirmation class. Not a dry eye in the house! After all these years!

The event also provided an excellent opportunity for Hillary to expound on her religous beliefs (presumably contrasting them with Obama's). The entire staged event was started with a planted question about her faith. After Hillary exponded on her praying habits, the long-lost Sunday School Teacher came forward from the small crowd gathered.

The problem with the event is that Hillary and Ms. Bentzinger are hardly strangers, having met at a similar campaign event in April of this year.

Ms. Bentzinger is hardly an unknown retired Sunday School teacher living in obscurity, either. Ms. Bentzinger is a well-known regliious scholar and leader and even has a religious scholarship named after her.

Hard to believe Clinton did not recognize her in the crowd, considering they shared BBQ together a few months earlier:

There is no moral equivalancy between the most generous country in the history of the world and third world hellholes. We have been bailing out our so called allies for generations and yet they never miss an opportunity to stick it to us or run their mouths about us. Bill Clinton was too busy getting nobbers from interns to worry about foreign policy when he was president, allowing AQ to blow up our buildings and ships and spend years getting the plans and assets for 9-11 in place. Why should we care what he or his power hungry wife think about foreign policy now? And why should GHWB undermine the excellent job his son has done in taking the fight to the crazies who would love to be blowing more of us up if only we would listen to the weak kneed liberals and back off the pressure we have been keeping on them?

I like how CNN's headline states, "Bush nixes". That leads folks to believe that it was actually talked about or conceived at some point in time. The article clearly suggests that this was NEVER a possibility. But instead of calling a spade a spade, CNN covers the Clintons by spinning the title. Way to go CNN. Another "Diamond or Pearls" moment. The title should have been, "Bill caught revising history again."

This is no surprise. Father Bush has never been able to come to terms with his own failures, let alone the tragic failures of his son. Trying to repair the damage his son hath wrought would be admitting failure as a father and human being, and this will never happen. The entire Bush family lives in a world of delusion and denial.

Bill Clinton would be wise to cut all ties with the Bush family.

Carol Canton MI   December 18th, 2007 6:49 pm ET

Bush Sr supports all of Bush Jr's foreign policies? Did he forget that at one point he said that for us to remove Saddam would be to open a hornet's nest and he was proven right?

Race Niagara Falls, NY   December 18th, 2007 6:47 pm ET

Hey, everyone cool it with the criticisms of Bill Clinton. If we fool him by keeping quiet, he'll think he's doing the RIGHT thing for his wife and continue "helping" his wife. Ultimately, it'll result in the RIGHT thing for the country ... a resounding NO vote for Hillary by the people when the time comes. SO, two rights won't make a LEFT. :)

Anil Petra NYC   December 18th, 2007 6:46 pm ET

Bush Sr. was not a supporter of the surge. He dispatched his operative James Baker to head the Iraq Study Group, which surrendered to all the Democrat members' demands, so as not to issue a fractured report. In advocating the Petreus plan, W broke with his father. His legacy of astounding success in turning around the Iraq War toward inevitable victory is a legacy his father has chosen to support and reinforce.

It's good to know that if Mrs. Clinton is elected President and she isn't up to the job Bill will be standing by to take over.
Of course that would mean all attempts to take out terrorists will be determined by focus groups to see how they poll.

The enemy within mrs. clinton's campaign is no other than her husband. His ego won't let her be president so he is subconsiously saboutaging her campaign, or maybe by design. There's NO WAY he's not doing these stupid things on purpose. He knows she may share him with other women but she's not sharing the presidency. He knows that and this is why he's doing this to her campaign.

Richard Kranium Ball City. IN.   December 18th, 2007 6:37 pm ET

It's no longer shame on them, it's SHAME ON US! Why are we so blind to the truth about these two immoral people. Do we crave financial gain as much as they do, after all, it's all about the money and who gets rich following them around. SNAP OUT OF IT AMERICA! "Well, the first thing she intends to do, because you can do this without passing a bill, the first thing she intends to do is to send me and former President Bush and a number of other people around the world to tell them that America is open for business and cooperation again," Clinton said in response to a question from a supporter about what his wife's "number one priority" would be as president.

A spokesman for the George H. W. Bush said Tuesday afternoon the former president supports his son's foreign policy and has "never discussed an ‘around-the-world-mission’ with either former President Bill Clinton or Sen. Clinton."
what is so hard to figure out about this one? bill made it sound like it was a done deal, and bush basically said that it was never discussed.

gh, watertown, ny   December 18th, 2007 6:23 pm ET

I understand Bush 41's refusal to do so, because it is embarassing to explain how bad his son has done to america in the international area.

Bush 43's international legacy is a shame.

Interesting, thre first CNN article used words like "said", "intends", in describing this so called trip.

The next article will probably use the words " woke up from a drunken stupor" in referencing this trip.

What an arrogant comment by Clinton!!! But then, what do you expect from them?

Paul Cooper, University Park, MD   December 18th, 2007 5:59 pm ET

Ignore the arrogance and the chutzpah and take what Bill said at face value:

According to Bill, Hillary's "number one priority" if elected president would be to send him on a world tour. Not taxes. Not the war in Iraq. Not social programs. Not health care. Not our energy needs. Not the environment. All of these, according to Bill, rank lower on Hillary's radar than sending Bill out of the country.

According to Bill, Hillary is an idiot.

Robert Bell, Jekyll Island, Georgia   December 18th, 2007 5:59 pm ET

I think we will not see a lot of Bill on the campaign trail for a while. Hillary thought that people's nostalgia for the Bill Clinton era would be a bonus.

Nostalgia works best when it is based on memories.

Putting Bill in front of the microphone just reminds us of "I did not inhale" and the lesser accomplishmnets of the Clinton White House.

Dennis Dallas TX   December 18th, 2007 5:58 pm ET

Papa Bush must be so embarrassed. All of his children are such huge failures, especially as Christians. I liked Bush, Sr., but his children just have no morals or ethics. It pains me that he is constantly having to compromise his own integrity by having to make statements of support about W.

Lance Morrison SF, CA   December 18th, 2007 5:53 pm ET

*****Question of the day:

If Bill Clinton thinks his wife is 'the single most qualified person for president in America,' isn't he by virtue of this saying:

1. there are no black men or women in the entire country more qualified than his white, very wealthy wife.

2. there are no Hispanic men or women in the entire country who are smarter than a woman who flunked her first attempt to pass the bar exam.

3. there are no Asian men or women who are more qualified than a woman who last year made a joke about Ghandi having worked at a gas station.

4. there are no lesbian or gay people in the entire country more qualified than a woman who says she wants equal rights for all, but cuts them off with a 'civil union' cop-out.

5. there are no disabled persons in the entire country more qualified than Hillary.

Get the idea–the very demographic these two use to propel their 'careers' are never a part of their lilly white upper class political machines or cabinets.

EXACTLY why this conservative (who would vote for Condi in a heartbeat) made America's only politically confrontative music CD-one that takes on Hillary, Congress, and the whole Ward Churchill crowd. One-of-a-kind stuff @

If W has suggested that Al Gore accompany him on a tour back in 2000 saying to the country and the world that there will be no more shananigans in the Oval Office and the U.S. is open for business again, do you think Al would have gone? Of course not. I too have thought that perhaps – even subconsciously – Bill is trying to torpedo Hillary's campaign so when she loses she has no more need for him and asks for a divorce. That's Bill's out to catch all the women who have caught his eye on the campaign trail.

Chuck   December 18th, 2007 5:53 pm ET

Sending Bush 41 is a bad idea, and a dumb thing for Clinton to say. Bush 41 said his son GW is "honest and decent", but he is neither, so both Bush's are partisan liars. GW should be on trial for his life because some of his crimes caused thousands of innocent deaths, foreign and domestic.

Mr.Clinton has a bright idea as always , and by the way , I think he is the 3nd. best President we have had lately , you gotta give him credit for the awesome economy the 8 years he is in power and the 1st. surplus in a long time. With all that said , I think he needs to modify the mission a little if indeed Mrs. Clinton become pres. Not a goodwill trip , but a mending-the-relation and building-new-relation trip to countries such as :
1/ North Korean : to make sure the Mad Man do not go back to building nukes again and threaten the whole region again and to help the North Koreans who need the most help right now.
2/ Lybia : to make sure another Mad Man stays inline and continues to behave well and continues to renounce terrorism and also bring a US presence to the new terrorism breeding ground which is Africa.
3/ Poland , Czech , Japan : to make sure we have what we need to build the missile defense that will benefit the majority of the peace-loving nations against future Mad Men. Japan has already seen the benefit of it as they had just succeeded in their recent test.
4/ Irag: to capitalize on the tremendous success we have had since the "PRES.BUSH'S TROOP SURGE" . We finally have a chance to stabilize the country , begin to help them build their country to accommodate for a stream of returning people , help extract Oil so they can pay us back , establish a long-wanting-but-never-able-to-accomplish presence in the middle of the Middle East , right next door to another Mad Man and thus able to keep that Mad man in check.
5/ Taiwan: to help them with their defense against a Mad Country , China that is , from taking over the island-nation and thus threaten the whole region . Also , to help them operate new hardward that Bush has sold them recently and may be to sell them the Missle Defense such as we did with Japan.
6/ Afganistan and Pakistan : to keep Bin Ladin and his cronies and the Taliban in check.
These are the suggestions I think the next president will need to do , to make sure ,us as a nation, can capitalize on a unique opportunity to bring peace to the world by keeping Mad Men at bay and to not only give them carrots but also offer a few sticks when they do not behave ( as that is the only language these bullies understand anyway ). And all these bring to my Point : we would not be in this situation had it not for Bush's determination and shrew and skillful handling of these situations . Disagree with him all you want but future generations will thank Bush deeply for:
1/ Making North Korea give up its Nukes which no pres. is able to do .
2/ braving the storm to bring us a missle defense which the nay-sayers said could not be done.
3/ Scaring the heck out of the MAD MAN Kadafi so that he dropped his guns literally and decided to be our friend instead.
4/ Having the gut to stick to the SURGE which the Dem. said is a sure Failure , well, at least they keep their mouth shut now.
5/ Helping our allies and thus in turn helping ourselves in the case of Japan , Taiwan , Afganistan, Pakistan, Irag.....
Just a few of Bush's stellar accomplishments that people do not give him credits for . AS a Clinton's supporter independent voter , I have to admit that Bush is one of the best thing that happens to us at the right time. No other president could have got the gut to pull thru the criticism as he has , which should give him the standing in my rankings of 3 best presidents in modern time:

Number One: the great communicator , Pres. Ronald Reagan . No one can top his accomplishment of winning the Cold WAr.

Number Two: the Steel-will , gunslinger from Texas , Pres. George W.Bush , whose nerve is actually titanium-plated.

Number Three: The Ivy-league, the Smooth operator from Ark. pres. Bill Clinton , who is the smartest of them all and who gave us the longest economic growth in History .

Hats off to these gentlemen and Good Luck with the mission . Go america ....

Bill, Streamwood, IL   December 18th, 2007 5:24 pm ET

Better if they send former president Jimmy Carter. He is held in higher esteem by the rest of the world than Bush 41 or Bill Clinton. It is odd that Carter's own country doesn't have that view. Must be because he is an Evangelical Christian and a Democrat.

Of course the only two flies in the ointment is that: (1) Hillary needs to get the Democratic nomination and (2) she must win the general election.

Tony A, Goodyear, AZ   December 18th, 2007 5:19 pm ET

I am confused as to why former president Clinton would make such a suggestion to include former president Bush. I always thought of Clinton as a brilliant man but if his wife were to become president and such a mission a reality, in the context of its objective, it would be an acknowledgment of bad government on the part of Bush's son. Bush the father would never undermine his son like that.

Katie, Sioux Falls SD   December 18th, 2007 5:08 pm ET

Who decides what news is worthy to be written and shared with the public? The past story on this topic (about how Bush (Sr.) had supposedly agreed to travel with Bill Clinton on a “reconnaissance”-style mission to rebuild America’s name) was clearly a blatant lie intended to further bash the president of the United States while at the same time promoting the candidacy of Hillary Clinton. How can the already biased news sources maintain their viewers’ trust if they not only present information that highlights only one side of the issues but also broadcast reports that are so misquoted and full of misinformation that they border on deception. The dishonesty in today’s media is startling. The prevalence of mainstream news being used to push agendas causes accurately informed viewers to cringe at the carnage littering the mass media outlets in the name of free speech. How can the providers of such obviously erroneous news maintain any personal integrity for themselves or their trade?

I tried several times to write something. But I couldn't think of anything good about GB. How could anyone compare him to Bill Clinton is beyond me. GB has done more to hurt America than any person in US history. Clintons little scandel pales in comparison to GB. I would think daddy Bush would be willing to help this country in any way he could. But I guess he just doesn't want to see the mess his son has created.

Lee, Fredericksburg, VA   December 18th, 2007 5:05 pm ET

Am I the only one to see this as a setup by Clinton of the Bushes and Republicans? Clinton knew Bush 41 was going to defend his boy, but how in the world he can say his son is doing a great job and that he is happy about it is beyond me. He is nothing like his son but obviously blood has blinded him to the truth of the mess his son has created for the US and the world. By ignoring the facts he comes across as just another Republican, completely uninterested in doing the right thing which is to restore this country's standing and credibility in the world. This is just more evidence the Republicans need to be retired so that responsible, reasonable, competent individuals can heal, renew and govern this country.

At the same time it would be a wonderful opportunity for "President" Hillary to back her moving van up to the White House filled with all the treasure and booty they pilfered from there when they were last evicted. American voters just can't be that stupid to enable such a clown show!

MC Seattle WA   December 18th, 2007 4:55 pm ET

jeremy,austin,tx   December 18th, 2007 4:55 pm ET

The idea of a Bush/Clinton/Bush/Clinton dynasty is unimaginable. When did we become a monarchy? This may be unconstitutional. Two terms then passed on to the wife? The wife (Hillary) was in the White House during the first two terms and I must assume that since she claims that she is experienced from those years (why else is she not releasing her records) then she must have been the "co-president". Or maybe she's lying again; which would mean she has even less years experience than Obama's 10 years plus as an elected official. Then again, experience is not the issue, I'd take Barack's judgement over Hillary's anyday. When are we going to wake up and stop this!!!

Cindy   December 18th, 2007 4:54 pm ET

Having CHillary as Prez is absolutely chilling. This is a woman with zero moral compass, with such an overwhelming passion for power that she remains wed to a serial philanderer, with a stated intent to pass a scamnesty bill for the millions upon millions of illegal alien invaders (and that, of course, will allow them the drivers' licenses that she NOW claims she will deny them as 'illegals'), with the intent to turn the independent USA into a socialist version of Cuba, and with an absolute aversion for telling the truth. And besides all these terminal flaws, hasn't she – as "co-president" already served and can't be "re-elected"?

Theresa, Oak Park, IL   December 18th, 2007 4:54 pm ET

Is there any clearer evidence than this latest bungle by Bill that he wants to be co-president with Hillary? Why in world isn't Hillary the one to say what the first thing she'll do as President is? The Clintons are so second rate, it's embarrassing. Enough already!

MC   December 18th, 2007 4:50 pm ET

Shot down? I don't think so! I don't really care what Bush Sr or Jr has to say about anything anymore. His comments at the end are just laughable, what planet is he living on? Get over yourselves...a new day is about to dawn.

A.B. North Carolina   December 18th, 2007 4:50 pm ET

What I don't understand is why he is campaining for his wife. Should the dog be out doing it herself? Why in the world would former President Bush help a democrat anyway...it just goes to show that the Clinton's are full of lies and will continue to be.

Jeff, Huntington Beach, CA   December 18th, 2007 4:49 pm ET

People, stop being so small minded. Regardless the motives of Bill Clinton, (and the stupidity of such an idea as this while Bush Sr's son is in office), let us admit that George W has been a disaster. Enough of the petty bickering on both sides. Will we never come to grips that this country and everything it stands for is in trouble and no amount of pretty speeches, guns, bombs, and human lives sacrificed will make things better in the world if there is not a change here at home? Lies, deceit and corporate greed run rampant and the only eventual outcome to this will be the demise of our beloved America. And what kind of a sewer are we leaving our children? Stop taking the mood and mind altering pharmaceuticals (psyche meds) and get real. Wake up before it is too late and realize the joke has been on us.

Tony, Memphis TN   December 18th, 2007 4:48 pm ET

It was just a simple gaffe; President Clinton and President George H.W. Bush spend a lot of time together and they are friends. They even co-created a relief orginization. Bill simply thought his friend was on his side and would play ball; not really remembering that their 'enemy' is his friends son...

What is more pathetic is the knee-jerk love/hate fanatisism on both sides of the aisle... Grow up and quit being intellectually dishonest...

Tony Miami   December 18th, 2007 4:47 pm ET

Why the old Bush has any thing to do if Mrs. Clinton is elected Bush junior the president has no diplomacy effective in the planet.

If Bills lips were moving he was lieing. What a piece of Crapola.

Leo, Mesa Arizona   December 18th, 2007 4:45 pm ET

I find it difficult to believe that Bill Clinton even made such a comment to begin with. If this wasn't CNN I would think it is some make believe stunt to spew more bad publicity about Bill and Hillary. I support Obama as the democratic candidate. I find some of the moves made by the Clinton foundation difficult to understand.

Del Boise Id.   December 18th, 2007 4:40 pm ET

to grace D. Washington right on. I'm lovin'it. but the serious side to all this is really sad for America. For any one to even consider those two, hill-billy duo. she says "provern leader – readiness to lead – clintons only lead the way to the darkest side of polotics that most Americans never see and hate to admit to lets get someone in our Whitehouse that we can trust. As much as I disagree with most of Obamas socialistic views he's still honest. With the hill-billy duo honesty, ethics, not there. they have no conscience never will admit guilt, only concern is to distroy anything outside of their little world of power, controll and to destroy just a game to them.

Great idea but he should have checked with Bush senior first.

It is going to take a lot of diplomacy on everybodies part to repair the damage Bush two has done and all the neo cons.

RE: Clinton/bin Laden "Peace" Plan

TO: Boy Clinton

FROM: Your dear friend, Osama bin Laden

DATE: December 18, 2007

Dear Mr. President Clinton:

Now that the Bush crime family has further humiliated you and your beautiful wife Hillary, I just wanted to send you a note letting you know that Al Qaeda and I will always graciously speak with you and your beautiful wife Hillary to discuss ways to improve our relationship with you and others who hate the United States as much as we do. We also appreciate that you and your beautiful wife Hillary share our hatred of the Bush crime family.

Your friend always,

American people is not ready for lady president at this distrubing period of US history. Dems would wait for at least 4 more years before they can see the light at the end of the tunnel

Despites the self made polls. They're not true 90% of times. Money can not buy vote anymore nowaday

Sheniqua, South Carolina   December 18th, 2007 4:31 pm ET

Oprah for secretary of state... now that is interesting and funny at the same time. Somehow though I feel like she could do a better job versus our current administration.

Amanda, Chicago IL   December 18th, 2007 4:31 pm ET

Of course the Bushes could never consider doing anything bipartisan for once. Instead of working together for the good of the whole, they place more importance on parties and labels.

Personally, I think the Clintons are old school and boring, but I think Bill has the right idea here when it comes to reaching across party lines.

R., Chicago   December 18th, 2007 4:31 pm ET

I note that Clinton has the sense not to suggest sending that fool George W. as an emissary of cooperation and progress. Good lord, I don't think most places would even let the plane land.

Steve, Cinn OH   December 18th, 2007 4:31 pm ET

This is at best immature, at worst delusional. Can you see these two back in the White House? I predict she will divorce him once she looses the nomination.

Also, exactly what would they fix – really – what would they do to fix our image and with who? Nobody can directly answer this!

Lori, Gulfport, Florida   December 18th, 2007 4:26 pm ET

Judging by the righteous indignation being spewed by the plethora of mouth breathers on this thread, Bill was – once again – right on the money. Get used to it, rethugs.

Lisa, San Diego, CA.   December 18th, 2007 4:25 pm ET

That's okay. They'll be friends again once Bush Jr. ignores the next huge national disaster.

RJK Naperville IL   December 18th, 2007 4:25 pm ET

Can you say "Train wreck". What in the world is going on in camp Hillary? They can't go 24 hours without a negative.

Andy, New York, New York   December 18th, 2007 4:23 pm ET

Bill has not only wrongly inferred that America has been closed for business and cooperation under 'Dubya' Bush, but he has insulted 'Dubya's' father, GHW Bush. Starting under the elder Bush and continuing under Bill, America made economic outsourcing a priority so that foreign investors in America were merely looking to buy up real estate or invest in businesses that were already into outsourcing. Economic globalization has taken root and will not turn back, no matter what Bill promises that Hillary will do if elected president. We are now staring at a New World Economic Order under a One World Government, and with Hillary as president, America's economic and military superpower status is doomed. She is a socialist who will help make a NWEO and ONG possible.

Cedric, Waukesha, WI   December 18th, 2007 4:21 pm ET

Bill and Hil just need/want new furniture

Nick, Chicago, IL   December 18th, 2007 4:18 pm ET

How sickening ! Nothing for the good of this country , the Bushes forget that Bill Clinton helped them out when GWB looked horrible over the Katrina episode , but like then they won't lift a finger to help our reputation around the world after there son trashed it once again instead of bringing the country together they separate us further apart with there partisan BS. father like son !

Steve D, Irving TX   December 18th, 2007 4:18 pm ET

Well, I guess what might be good for the country is not as important as partisan politics, for Republicans. I bet Bill would answer that call, if it were reversed. That's why we're getting rid of them!

Jeff, Plainfield, IL   December 18th, 2007 4:16 pm ET

Karen, Pasadena, California   December 18th, 2007 4:13 pm ET

Wow, this really shows that Hillary Clinton does not have very solid plans even though she keeps telling us she will be 'ready from day one'. If she doesn't even have simple details in place for her 'number one priority', what is she ready for?

Hillary is not a leader. She graduated from Yale at the bottom of her class (without any honors). She married the smartest guy in her class. She ran for senator in New York, a 'safe' Democratic seat. She can't run a campaign. She can't even define herself.

Gobama, NY, NY   December 18th, 2007 4:12 pm ET

Blond Emily of DC, one only needs to read the response of daddy Bush to understand why Bill Clinton's idea is a senile one, and harmful to his wife's campaign too: Bill Clinton is unwittingly seeking to extract an admission from the father that the son has screwed up royally America's foreign affairs to the point of it needing to be fixed.

Everyone knows this is true; but not all truths about a son is going to be pleasant for a dad, who will stand by the son at even the cost of the truth.

Sam Lutz, FL   December 18th, 2007 4:11 pm ET

Here we go again with loyalty to the party and more party politics. I'm beginning to think that politicians are running for their respective parties rather than for the interests of the American people. Is this really a democracy, or a modified aristocracy?

Tammy, Denton, Maryland   December 18th, 2007 4:10 pm ET

Only Bill and Hillary Clinton are dumb enough to believe that H.W. Bush (41) would be willing to trash G.W. Bush (his son – 43) to help Hillary capture the nomination.

Bill and Hillary think everyone is fixated on her desire to win. She fails to realize it's her own personal problem.

We're not all trying to move heaven and earth so that Hillary's lifelong dream of being president can come true.

Hillary is so focused on Hillary and she is so obsessed with becoming president, how could she possibly care about average Americans? She can't. She's only pretending to care.

Jesse, Burnsville, MN   December 18th, 2007 4:10 pm ET

Well, if any of you wanted an example of what Hillary in the White House would be like, here you go. It will be Bill saying one thing, Hillary saying another. Then, they will pick whichever one fits the popular opinion of the minute.

CHANGE! CHANGE! CHANGE! CHANGE! CHANGE! CHANGE! CHANGE! CHANGE!

I don't care what the media says, he is a great President. Terrorists on the run, sound economy, two countries liberated from tyranny, a safe homeland, North Korea stopping nuclear program, Iran on notice, a real hope for peace between Israel and Palestine, Libya disclosing nukes... And all with a positive attitude and a ready smile... Love ya W!

After 7 years of the Bush White House's total lockdown and manipulation of information, it is sad to see hillary's campaign run the same. I know that she wants to be perfect. I know that the press has been hard on the Clintons. But, I think that Hillary is already showing to be the same as a hyper-controlled Bushy, though of a different color. I wish she could try to be different – even take some risk – but appear as more real. The medium is the message. And her medium appears too controlled to be open to new ideas. Chili-Time david, magic johnson is doing it for you.

Comrad Clinton is just taking a page from the Soviet Union under Lenin, Stalin,Kruchev, and all the others including Hugo Chavez and Castro,"Controll the Media" and you win. Eventually all the lies become truths, written in scholl books, and then the Clininists have won. Not one journlists has the cajones to really tell the American people what is actually happening in the reporting of Comrad Clinton. If the light was really shown on Hillary1) record the late night phone calls,2) print the conversations when the pressure is applied BillHillary will not be able look the American People in the eye. Its a shame none of the so called "objective" media will report the truth about BillHillary.

John,seattle,washington   December 18th, 2007 4:03 pm ET

Hillary came to mind over the weekend as I watched the Wizard of Oz. Hillary is the Wicked Witch of the West after the ruby slippers. The flying monkeys seemed loyal to her (the media), but after the Wicked Witch of the West went into her meltdown, they all cheered because they were free. Now that's when they made good movies that always seem to come back and reflect what is going on now. I can't wait to get rid of the Clinton's once and for all and sit back and watch the meltdown.....

Unfortunately it took segregationist Governor Wallace to reveal the truth that "there's not a dime's worth of difference between" Republicans and Democrats. The Democrats willingly went along with the War in Iraq, suspension of Habeas Corpus, detaining protesters, banning books like "America Deceived' from Amazon, stealing private lands (Kelo decision), warrant-less wiretapping and refusing to investigate 9/11 properly. They are both guilty of treason. Support Dr. Ron Paul and save this great nation. Hillary Clinton only emulating the Bush administration model with her attack-dog treatment of the press? I don't think so! Hildabeast has raised spinning, distorting, threatening and lying to an unprecedented level of art form previously achieved on once before – by her husband, Bill Clinton, when he was president. What your article tells us is the media is scared to death of the Hildabeast, and doesn't have the guts to cover her like it should. One can only imagin what would happen to the fourth estate if, God forbid, she ever became president.

Axel, RKDA, California   December 18th, 2007 3:57 pm ET

Don't you people get it? Bill Clinton said former President George H. W. Bush will help fix the damage done to America's reputation by his son, knowing full well that he wouldn't do it. Then when George H. W. Bush says he won't do it, who is it that is going to look bad?

Is it going to be Bill Clinton? No. Is it going to be Hillary Clinton? Again, no. It will be George H. W. Bush. You guys may not like the man, and you may not want to admit it, but Bill Clinton is a very experienced professional politician, and he knows exactly what he is doing.

Joseph W. Mathews, Manchester, VT   December 18th, 2007 3:57 pm ET

Wayne, we'll see just who the successor is. If the GOP can get Romney and Huckabee out of the way, they might have a chance especially if the Democrats are dumb enough to nominate Clinton, but which Clinton is running? Oh, would you come get Ron Paul while you're at it and take him back to Texas!

Sorry, but no matter whether you agree with Bush, and I don't, the Constitution's quite clear on this.

Hey Ron from TX,

Yeah it sure is an embarrassment.... to the Bushes (and to this country) that we have to even think about asking daddy to help clean up W's mess.
Not surprised Bush 41 said no. Saying yes would have been tacit admission that his son is a screw-up. If W was my kid, I would distance myself from him too.

Yah, yah, blah, blah. Since when is this news? The reporter who commented was correct; it's hardball, always has been. Could it be that an overly liberal democrat leaning press is stunned that one of their own would become combative? However, sooner or later, there must be substance, or the newspaper/new outlet looses readers. Gee, could that be happening? The quote that Kerry could have won the swift boat battle is bunk. As they say in court, "the truth is the best defense against libel." Edward is a liar too, and there was not way out of it or he would have released the necessary information to sink the swiftees. The Clintons are liars as well. And unlike 1992, the dissemination of information has too many outlets to control. If she can't figure this out, she's not only a liar, but she's stupid as well.
Give me Obama anytime!

AJ, IL   December 18th, 2007 3:48 pm ET

Either this is political mastery at its' best or the biggest political blunder of the week?

To a Hillary-supporter, this is political mastery. To re-ignite the Clinton vs Bush mentality, in hopes of getting other Democrats and Independents fired up about GW Bush's poor ratings, and then throw in Hillary's presidency at the fix.

To the rest of us, it looks like the biggest political blunder of the week. GH Bush Sr. would never betray his son and Republican party like that. The Clintons are caught again lying and deceiving the American public, AGAIN! Oh the shame!

Obama in '08!

John C Marietta, GA   December 18th, 2007 3:46 pm ET

I doubt that if asked HW Bush would refuse a request from the President of the United States any more than Clinton refused to help GW after Katernia.

I feel that Clinton has a viable idea and that he just jumped the gun on this one and blind sided HW, with public attention that HW was not anticipating.

Exactly! Bush senior say he will not help America and the story is Bill Clinton assumed he would. Today's Republican party has sunk so low it is amazing! Priceless example: "How about we elect a President who WON'T inspire the worst in people, who WON'T encourage partisan bickering?

That would mean wipe out all the republican party, that is the only way to stop the partisan Bickering. We hate Hillory so don;t elect her so we can all get along? These people are nuts! No president in history has been investigated more with no tangable results than Bill Clinton. The hatred from the right is unprecidented. COntrast that with the criminal incompetant we have now. No president in history has deserved investigation and gotten so little as this idiot. Yeah BIll Clinton lied about sex and Heroge Bush Lied about treason, Scooter libby lied and commited treason. Scooter got off beacuse lying about betraying your country is not as big a deal as lying to a republican with hunt about sex. Republicans should be ashamed, they have earned it!

Did his wife go around cleaning up her adulteress husband’s image?
She sided with him against the women who were abused, (so much for women’s dignity).
It is dim-witted of Bill to think a father going against son.

James, New Haven, CT   December 18th, 2007 3:44 pm ET

So what?

It sounds to me like hysterical Republicans, knowing that their crushing defeat is imminent, are desperate to try and blow the most trivial things up into some sort of scandal.

Obviously (to anyone who has followed the news) Bill Clinton has many times responded to Bush 43's calls to help out with Katrina/Tsunami relief etc. I think that Bush 41, if called upon by the next Democratic President, will respond in kind.

Clinton has floated the idea of various notables (including perhaps Bush 41) being enlisted as unofficial goodwill ambassadors if Hillary is elected. Obviously, it depends on Hillary being elected, and it isn't going to happen until 2009 anyway.

Did anyone expect Bush 41 to commit two years in advance to something that may never happen anyway?

This is a scandal in the same way that hysterical far-right republicans made a huge deal out of "Travel Gate"

Pat,IN   December 18th, 2007 3:44 pm ET

These people are really frightening. Their "media control" is only because they have plenty to hide. If God forbid Hillary gets elected one of the first things she will do is bring back the "fairness doctrine" to silence talk radio and we will be on our way to a dictatorship. There is more than enough reasons from the last time in power for Hillary to be rejected outright let alone be given the Democratic spot in 08.

Paula, Mobile, AL   December 18th, 2007 3:44 pm ET

He may be on to something there.

Steve, Huntington Beach CA   December 18th, 2007 3:40 pm ET

Fast forward 2 years and we'll see Dad and Bill doing the tour for sure. He may not care so much for the horrible impact dubya has had on this country, but the family name....oh no!! He needs to do everything he can to make the Bush name only a sad joke in the archives of history, rather than the retarded straw that broke America's back.

Ivan, Chicago, Illinois   December 18th, 2007 3:40 pm ET

OF COURSE HE WOULDN'T GO, THAT WOULD MEAN ADMITTING THE FAILURE OF HIS SON AS PRESIDENT.

Brian, Atlanta, GA   December 18th, 2007 3:39 pm ET

I voted for Bill Clinton in '92 & '96 but I can honestly say that I will never vote for Hillary Clinton. If she is the nominee, I will simply stay home. I simply want to have a democratic nominee that I can trust and be proud to call "our" president.

Does this country want to wake up to more lies, triangulation, and further control of special interests?

Kevin, Port Orange, Florida   December 18th, 2007 3:39 pm ET

Just shows you exactly how the Bush family is nothing more than bunch of dirtbags!! They would sell their own country for a dollar...oh wait...they have already done that. Dirtbags one and all!!!

John Smith in America   December 18th, 2007 3:38 pm ET

Well it was nice of Bill to cross party lines and go to Katrina and India as an ambassador of good will for George Dubya.

But Bush the first, a Republican only looks out for his party. Not surprised one bit.

Mike   December 18th, 2007 3:38 pm ET

Former President Bush basically stated that 'he is proud of the role America continues to play around the world as the beacon of hope for freedom and democracy"

This is his main reason not to 'support such a mission', he cannot admit his son made such a mess. Also, any favorable comment would be interpreted like supporting a Democrat in the WH, so it was nothing else to expect as response. Bill Clinton has simply challenged him, but the older Bush is what it is : a Republican.

The Great William Wallace   December 18th, 2007 3:36 pm ET

Big Bill, Boise, Idaho   December 18th, 2007 3:35 pm ET

BRING IT ON!

HILLARY 2008/2012!

SO MANY TERRIBLE THINGS WILL BE MADE RIGHT!

Jacob, South Carolina   December 18th, 2007 3:34 pm ET

LIAR
I see now this is what we can expect from Hillary.
You and your wife are done.

Karen, NYC   December 18th, 2007 3:32 pm ET

hahahahahahahaha.....

another lie Bill is caught in.

Thanks Bill for a wonderful year!

Brian, Chicago, IL   December 18th, 2007 3:32 pm ET

Just cannot understand this. Hillary and Bill Clinton had all the chances in the White House for 8 full years to do something about HealthCare. But both FAILED miserably in getting it done. Period. So this new slogan of Agent of change by her campign is just plain dud, LIE and fooling Americans. Are the democrats so stupid not to see through the hoax of Hillary? Both Bill and Hillary were once in the WhiteHouse, don't forget, they had their chance already, while others did not. So why give another chance to the same Failed duo? Let us put up someone more capable to get things done for the country. Not Hillary and not Bill, who desparately wants to sneak in. When was the last time a Former President of USA got so involved in primaries for his wife, and attacked other honest democrats????

Peter Lombardo, San Francisco, CA   December 18th, 2007 3:32 pm ET

The elder Bush is too much of a gentleman, and has too much class to say what he really thinks about Clinton's suggestion. Pity. I wish he would tell everyone what a narcissistic jerk Clinton is.

barbara,lowell,ma   December 18th, 2007 3:32 pm ET

Just the same way I will nix her this elections. I will not be fooled by this power hungery woman and get stuck the rest of my life....

Jim Topeka, Kansas   December 18th, 2007 3:31 pm ET

I doubt that if asked HW Bush would refuse a request from the President of the United States any more than Clinton refused to help GW after Katernia.

I feel that Clinton has a viable idea and that he just jumped the gun on this one and blind sided HW, with public attention that HW was not anticipating.

theprofessional   December 18th, 2007 3:30 pm ET

Former President Bill Clinton getting called out on lying by another former President? How is this not the biggest story of the day?

Former President Bill Clinton said Monday that the first thing his wife Hillary will do when she reaches the White House is dispatch him and his predecessor, President George H.W. Bush, on an around-the-world mission to repair the damage done to America's reputation by the current president — Bush's son, George W. Bush.

"Well, the first thing she intends to do, because you can do this without passing a bill, the first thing she intends to do is to send me and former President Bush and a number of other people around the world to tell them that America is open for business and cooperation again," Clinton said in response to a question from a supporter about what his wife's "number one priority" would be as president.
.....
Clinton, nor does he think such a mission is warranted since he is proud of the role America continues to play around the world as the beacon of hope for freedom and democracy."

Simon, IA   December 18th, 2007 3:12 pm ET

Rest assured, Bush 41 will do the trip once Hillary is President. Right now, they have to issue such press releases as part of party obligations.

Even McCain and Powell will do that trip. They are all respectable individuals who know Hillary is strong and diplomatic.

Emily, DC   December 18th, 2007 3:12 pm ET

Why is this a bad thing for President Clinton to suggest? Our image abroad has been hurt these past few years and denying that is just being out of touch with reality. I would hope that all past presidents will help which ever candidate is elected. President Clinton was saying what his wife's plan was to rebuild our image abroad. I hope all candidates have a plan to accomplish that. And I hope previous presidents can put politics aside to for the good of our country. President Clinton did that during President Bush Jrs term. Glad to see that divisive politics trumps national interest.

AJ, IL   December 18th, 2007 3:11 pm ET

Hah Hah Hah! Heh Heh Heh! Hah Hah Hah! Heh Heh Heh! Hah Hah Hah! Heh Heh Heh!

Sorry i can't stop laughing at Bill, and the Hillary campaign for allowing Bill to open his mouth.

Bill, Bloomington IL   December 18th, 2007 3:11 pm ET

ah yes. More Bill Clinton double-talk. Thats what I said but that is not what I said.

Greenbelt, MD   December 18th, 2007 3:10 pm ET

Misleading works for the politically naive,
But lying is an insult to the politically savvy
Clintons do not seem to know the difference,
Bill! stop lying to the nation as if we did not have enough of it.

roger, conway sc   December 18th, 2007 3:08 pm ET

Bill should not assume that any back stabbing hypocrite republican would return the favor, the next time GW asks for his help he needs to tell him & the entire BUSH clan to get lost some where like the middle east since they seem to govern like the islamic leaders...This administration & the GOP are the most corrupt individuals in the entire world...VOTE DEMOCRATIC 08

Tom Dedham, Mass   December 18th, 2007 3:05 pm ET

Wait for it.............

Go Hillary go! Your the "bestest"!

Nobama 2008! I love you Bill!

We need you both in the White house.

The 90's were so wonderful and we were so loved.

I honestly don't know who I am more worried about mentally, the bible thumpers supporting Huckabee or the sheep that can't admit when Bill or Hillary blatantly LIE to our faces.

I posted on another blog that I think Bill is purposely trying to get her to lose, so he can "move on" and get a divorce.

Everytime he opens his mouth it hurts her. Maybe we shouldn't complain.

NO more Clinton's or Bush's EVER.

AJ, IL   December 18th, 2007 3:03 pm ET

Hah Hah Hah! Heh Heh Heh! Hah Hah Hah! Heh Heh Heh! Hah Hah Hah! Heh Heh Heh! Hah Hah Hah! Heh Heh Heh! Hah Hah Hah! Heh Heh Heh! Hah Hah Hah! Heh Heh Heh! Hah Hah Hah! Heh Heh Heh!

Bill, Bill, Bill. This is very embarrassing for Clinton campaign. First Hillary slips up at the Philadelphia debate and he has been slipping ever since. Enraged Bill Clinton, tries to be the savior of Hillary's past two months of campaign sinking. Most political experts were not thinking that Bill's mouth would be the cons for Hillary but the political baggage he brings. Wow! If I didn't know any better I would think Bill Clinton was working for the Obama campaign. Thanks for lies, Bill! Politics as usual.

Obama in '08!

Martin Eagle, CO   December 18th, 2007 3:01 pm ET

Really, who is running for president, Hillary or Bill? Do we need another four years of the Clintons. If the Clintons were to win, would we ever really know which president would stand up and speak; Hillary or Bill??

Ray, New Brunswick, NJ   December 18th, 2007 3:00 pm ET

This is precisely why I love the Internet. It used to be a time where off the cuff comments like Bill Clinton's could fester in the minds of voters for weeks before a counter response came. Today you say something off the cuff and lesss than 24 hours someone across the country electronically backhands you and publicly tells you to STFU! I've never spoke to you about an around-the-world mission!

Surrealist, Fort Myers, FL   December 18th, 2007 3:00 pm ET

Haaaaaa....haaaaaa...
Is ANYONE suprised to see Papa Bush is not willing to go out and "mend" the ills of the world created by his progeny?

I can't believe how bold Clinton is. Another good reason why the "Clinton's" should not be in the White House again.

There's no doubt his sense of reality is seriously askew!!

John Edwards–on track with a strong agenda–wouldn't be such a dolt.

Ca Native   December 18th, 2007 2:58 pm ET

"He has never discussed an ‘around-the-world-mission’ with either former President Bill Clinton or Sen. Clinton"

Someone is lying. Either Bill Clinton or GHW-Bush about this.

WHY does it always end-up into a he-said, she-said when the Clintons are involved?

Wayne, Greenville TX   December 18th, 2007 2:57 pm ET

FYI, like it or not George W. Bush has the final responsibility for foreign and domestic policy until his successor takes office on January 20, 2009.

Posted By Joseph W. Mathews, Manchester, VT : December 18, 2007 2:50 pm

And then the Democrat who will replace him will start cleaning up the mess he made.

Wayne, Greenville TX   December 18th, 2007 2:55 pm ET

Bill Clinton should be ashamed!!! He should also apologize!!!

Posted By Carl Belson, Boston, Ma. : December 18, 2007 2:28 pm

Before Bill Clinton apologizes for what he said, George W. Bush has to admit his shame for what he has done to damage this country, and apologize for being a worthless dirtbag.

Mark, Shreveport, La   December 18th, 2007 2:55 pm ET

Bill just wants to travel to countries where infidelity is not looked upon as a serious offense.

Joseph W. Mathews, Manchester, VT   December 18th, 2007 2:50 pm ET

Former President George H.W. Bush handled this preposterous proposal of Bill Clinton's correctly. Polite "no go". former President Clinton knows better. This voter can't help but think it's a cheap political trick and does his wife's campaign no good and possibly raises questions of just which Clinton is running.

FYI, like it or not George W. Bush has the final responsibility for foreign and domestic policy until his successor takes office on January 20, 2009.

Jesse, Burnsville, MN   December 18th, 2007 2:48 pm ET

How is Bill going to back-track on this one? He HAS to be trying to get Hillary to lose this campaign!!

That would be fine with me. Any other Democrat gets nominated, I will support them. If Hillary gets nominated, I'm either voting Independent or not voting for President at all (I've voted Democrat my whole life).

Obama/Edwards or Edwards/Obama '08

CC - Macon, GA   December 18th, 2007 2:48 pm ET

So very, very typical of Bill Clinton who has more brass than anyone else out there in today's world....shame he doesn't have the good manners to first check with people before he says this or that about them.

Dryden01, Redmond, WA   December 18th, 2007 2:44 pm ET

On the face of this Bill Clinton claim, it appears that he must be confused once more about what the meaning of is is.

At best, it appears that the Clinton attempt to bypass presidential term limitations by installing his wife in the white house has gone too far astray and that he is having a sort of nervous breakdown by trying to enlist GHWB to salvage it.

He would have been better off trying to use Chelsea instead but would have had to wait a few more years till she was able to qualify by age.

Bill and Hillary are evidently going to have to satisfy themselves with writing the books they have already received millions of dollars for. The unflattering Drudgereport photo of the elderly Hillary suggests she should be checked for heart problems as she didn't look too healthy there.

Obama has their number and will probably not be inclined to have Hillary as his V.P.

Looks like Hillary's vast experience ruining the possibility for healthcare isn't resonating well enough with the public.

The experienced Obama, on the other hand, is no doubt evaluating Oprah for Secretary of State, wondering if she can type, answer the phone, and take shorthand accurately.

Ron, TX   December 18th, 2007 2:43 pm ET

Well that sure must be embarassing for the Clintons! I've been waiting for Elder Bush to shoot down this idea ever since I first saw Clinton suggest it! How is it, exactly, that Hillary plans on working across party lines when even an ex-President shoots her down?

Oh, and I remember the reason Bill said health care failed: "Republicans were in a vote against [Bill]" phase. Well guess what, Republicans HATE Hillary, too!

How about we elect a President who WON'T inspire the worst in people, who WON'T encourage partisan bickering?

JD, Syracuse, NY   December 18th, 2007 2:43 pm ET

Bill Clinton's statement is only logical.

Bush 41 will change his mind if Hillary gets elected. Besides, Bill Clinton helped out in the Katrina and India disasers, per Bush 43's request.

Jessey Denver   December 18th, 2007 2:36 pm ET

Poor Bill, he was just tryinng to help his wife's sinking campaign. Oh well! I guest no matter how fast a lie can run, the truth always catches up.

Good try though

Daniel, NY   December 18th, 2007 2:28 pm ET

Clinton at least got some good news in state polls that were released today, including in places like North Carolina or Missouri where she either leads or is competitive. Full roundup of the 6 general election state polls released today is available here.

Carl Belson, Boston, Ma.   December 18th, 2007 2:28 pm ET

No Kidding!!! Former President Bill
Clinton had alot of nerve to suggest
that Former President Bush would have
even considered such a trip. It's the
cheapest of cheap shots against the
current President Bush. Bill Clinton
should be ashamed!!! He should also
apologize!!!

lol   December 18th, 2007 2:27 pm ET

A clinton running his mouth when its clearly not warranted? Surely you jest?!

That family will say ANYTHING to keep up appearances. Hey Bill, this might be a foreign concept, but telling the truth is the best place to start!!

Shonali, Nashville, TN   December 18th, 2007 2:24 pm ET

Bill is insuring Hillary's loss! What is he doing???
