President Bush says his budget director will review the omnibus spending bill for wasteful spending.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - While praising Congress for "ending on a high note," President Bush Thursday chastised lawmakers for adding billions of dollars in earmarks to an omnibus spending bill.

The president said he had ordered his budget director to review the bill.

Bush's comments come a day after the House gave final approval to a $555 billion omnibus spending bill by a vote of 272-142 Wednesday evening. The bill contains an additional $70 billion in war spending, a move that was bitterly opposed by anti-war Democrats.

illegal and immoral war

I've been waiting for you left wingers for years to explain the illegal part of the war...the war was approved by congress therefore it's legal..I know you all are told to keep pushing this lie but come on how about you move on to a different lie, this one is getting old.

The spread of freedom and liberty should be a pet project for everyone. Maybe then we will know what peace on earth really means..

Or as Youssif's mother put:
"America is full of new things. Even the spoons are different, the toys. Everything is different, and it's something amazing. Iraq doesn't have these things. I am still scared to dream; I don't want to dream. Let me live day by day; it's easier."

Pet Projects? hmmm. What about the 70 billion to massage your giant ego in Iraq ?

Ajay Jain   December 21st, 2007 1:42 am ET

Yes Dubya can call this session ending:

"ending on a high note,"

because he got 70 Billion after asking for 200 Billion for the Iraq/Afganistan effort.

The Democratic Congress is giving Dubya enough rope so he may hang himself in the end.
$555 Billion Spending bill for Bush to secure $70 Billion for Iraq.
Poor Dubya calls this "ending on a high note,"!!

Republicans BEWARE you are getting what you are asking for a spend, spend, spend BILL. Come 2008 you will have to answer the electrorate about your fiscal conservatism!

Don't get me wrong, I voted for people that pledged not to fund the war and they let me down.

Our Liar in Chief, affectionately known as King Pinocchio doesn't bring up the 10 trillion American Taxpayer deficits that we owe and the ordinary citizens and their grandchildren will pay for long after the Neo cons scuttle to their offshore accounts in Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Paraguay and Argentina.
The Republicans held the purse strings immediately after taking over Congress in 1992 until last year. Since King Pinocchio took over he has more than doubled the nations deficits.
Remember the over 400 million dollars "Bridges to Nowhere"?
The War on Terror is quite different than the Iraqi Civil War Debacle where the Neo Con Parasites have wasted over 1 Trillion American Taxpayer dollars after you weigh in the related things.
King Pinocchio is a Pathological Liar who was bailed out Daddy Bush

Maybe the American citizen needs to do the same for congress as they do to uss. Paperboy- tack on another $50 to the senators bill, say it's a broken lawn Gnome add-on. Gas stations, have a special senator rate,(20$/gal) just like they have health/retirement benefits the rest of the country dont have. I they can "add on" to a bill, why cant anybody sending a bill to them. Strange how both partis oppose it, yet they are so incompetent to get it done.

J Houston, TX   December 20th, 2007 3:44 pm ET

Nothing like mortgaging America to the Chinese & other asian banks…

This type of comment is just stupid. Do you have any idea how deep Japan is in debt? Go read about what you speak of. Most of the debt relates to retirement funding...which is partly due to the extended lifetimes we all enjoy...and mostly due to Congress borrowing money from the Trust fund.

Do you own a US Savings Bond? You do? Why are you putting the country into debt? If you want to talk economics at least take the time to read about it first.

So let me know if I am understanding the comments here. Because President Bush is spending billions in Iraq, it is OK for Congress to spend on the earmarks that they so forcefully promised to get rid of, and we should ignore the waste? Regardless of how you feel about the President, the wasteful spending of Congress is wrong.

Patrick, Denver Colorado   December 20th, 2007 3:28 pm ET

Let's see you're comparing freeing a people from a dictator in the middle-east to funding insect studies in Portugal, that makes sense. I'm more then willing to pay extra taxes to help people in need around the world, I'm not willing to pay more to help a congressman get elected for "bringing home the bacon" to his state.

KEITH JAMES LOUTTIT   December 20th, 2007 3:22 pm ET

How about chastising congress for the 6 previous years budgets? Fact is–although projects are up–actual pork spending is down 30% from the last GOP budget. I say we are on track...with 30% reductions in spending, in a few years all the pork will be gone. This is a sound strategy, we will achieve budgetary victory!! Anybody that doesn't support the heroic measures are congress is taking with it's long-term strategy–and an immediate 30% dollar reduction–is un-American.

Sound familiar?

How everyone is suddenly against this horrible man now, when only 3 years ago he convinced half the country to vote for him... for a second term!... just blows my mind.

Hey- average American: where were you four years ago?

The folks who voted for Bush in '04, and now count themselves among those who "disapprove of his presidency" are among the dumbest people out there...

At least the die-hard Bushies aren't stupid, only evil.

Average American- What information do you have now that you lacked 4 years ago? Or have you only just recently finally learned to read and write.

Michael Arnaud-Glen Burnie, Maryland   December 20th, 2007 3:06 pm ET

The Congress spending tax dollars on pork barrel projects. The President getting the money to keep fighting the wars in Iraq and Afganistan. Taxes on the "middle class" being lowwerd. Sounds like business as usual in DC to me. Oh, almost forgot, the budget is over three months late. Yeah, the Congress and the President really worked hard to get it out on time.

I keep wondering when the people of this country are going to wake up and realize what a wreck the politicans in DC are making of this nation. When are the people of the US going to wake and see how lobbyists and special interest groups have bought off every member of Congress. When are the people of this nation going to realize how much party politics have made a mockery of our government.

These aren't rhetorical questions, it's simple fact. Our country is dying and noone knows or cares.

shannon, Charlottesville, Virginia   December 20th, 2007 3:03 pm ET

the only thing this war criminal is interested in spending tax dollars on is war, nothing else, just war war war.

xtina - chicago IL   December 20th, 2007 2:56 pm ET

I don't think fighting terrorism at its roots and keeping terrorism from dawning upon our shores is wasting money. That's the good part of the spending bill, although no one wants even one American casualty in that war on terror. Thanks to those in the military who have volunteered to give up their tomorrows for our todays. We owe you our lives.

FED UP   December 20th, 2007 2:47 pm ET

What about the earmarks that the Republicans passed from with there one party rule from 2001 to last year? It was far more than that of the Democrats. Why is he talking with his Billion dollar war that so far has benefited only his financial backers.

Terry, El Paso, TX   December 20th, 2007 2:45 pm ET

Every man, woman, and child in America owes about $30,000, I have read, to pay off the debt from the war in Iraq.

Bush was right to scold Congress for blowing more of our cash on non-essentials, but it would have been better for him to have done so in years past when members of his own party might have listened to him.

Everyone criticizes the other party for their own bad habits.

The amazing thing to me is that about 30% of Americans still support Bush. Who are those people and what can they be thinking?

Marjorie Helms, Amherst, NY   December 20th, 2007 2:43 pm ET

Oh, give me a break! Bush has already pushed this country to the point of bankruptcy by borrowing money from China in order to pay for his war! His sense of 'fiscal responsibility' has everything to do with making sure that the corporate elite keep milking the public dry, and absolutely nothing to do with ensuring the safety of the country. Enough, already! If Bush wants to show some concern about spending, he should stop blowing our money on his nonsensical war!

Keith Franklin, Tn   December 20th, 2007 2:42 pm ET

I find it funny when neo-cons comment about dems spending us into bankruptcy. GWB has spent more $$$ than slcik willie could have ever dreamed of. If he says Congress sucked, then they must have done a hell of a job.

Comparing our Congress to Iraq's just proves that, if he wasn't president, about 100 million people would be waiting outside the White House to kick his brainless criminal ass to a pulp.

"How can Bush talk about anybody being a wasteful spender after all the money that he has wasted in the war in Iraq."

Congress allocates the funding for the war, not the President. People love to flap their jaws about Bush spending trillions in Iraq. CONGRESS is spending the money to fund the war in Iraq, not the President.

The omnibus spending bill is over 3,000 pages long. There isn't a single person who knows everything in that bill and yet Congress pushed it through. Nancy Pelosi should be ashamed of herself for lying to all the people who voted for her.

Robert, Vivian, LA   December 20th, 2007 1:52 pm ET

A Republican president that loves spending money on war and a Democrat congress that love spending money on earmarks they told the taxpayers they would eliminate once they came to power.

Spending taxpayer money is something both parties LOVE to do!

Andy J, Upstate NY   December 20th, 2007 1:48 pm ET

A little hypocritical for Bush to bash congress for funding pet projects and not doing away with earmarks, due to his own "pet project" in Iraq. True fact, indeed.

However- He is right. It is true that the democrats promised a lot of things, such as doing away with earmarks, pork, pet projects tucked deep within long and verbose bills, yada yada its the same old crap that keeps getting people elected to office in Washington.... They have not stopped this garbage which corrupts our political system. When are people going to realize that Democrats and Republicans are cut from the same cloth? They are merely two different ends of the same rope which has been carefully crafted into a noose and slipped around the throat of America.

Shame on you, Washington.

Ken, Suitland MD   December 20th, 2007 1:38 pm ET

The biggest earmark in that new spending bill is the extra $70 billion for Iraq, foisted on us by the remnant Bushie [R]-bots in congress who repeatedly abuse the 60%-vote-to-proceed rules in the senate to block progress in this country. What a hypocrite the disaster-in-charge is.

And just where was all this concern about earmarks when the [R]s were in charge of the biggest increase in earmarks in our nation's history? And now that the [D] congress is moving towards improving that sad record, all of a sudden we hear shrilly from the Rove-bots 'it isn't enough!' You so-called conservatives are laughable. You don't even know what the word means, and it certainly doesn't describe the current [R] president and the recent [R] congresses YOU elected to office.

You toothless good-ole boys are pathetic. I'm voting [D] this election, and I'll put my conservative credentials up against any of you...but remember there's a difference between conservative and fascist, conservative and [R], conservative and right-wing. You boys on the 'right' have been listening to and obeying the right-wing spin so long, you actually believe it!

Chad, Wisco   December 20th, 2007 1:36 pm ET

Glad to see all you Dems voted for a bunch of people that are doing the exact same thing you all complained the Repubs were doing. It would be nice to one day see an ammendment to the constitution that makes it unconstitutional to add items not related to the specific bill. That way the transportation, military, and other bills would actually contain what they should contain in the first place. Anyone who thinks that the founding fathers meant for things to run the way they do obviously doesn't have a clue as to what they stood for and believed.

S. B. Stein E.B. NJ   December 20th, 2007 1:21 pm ET

There are two problems with what is going on; Bush is asking too much for his idea of foreign policy (killing people until they agree with him) and bad domestic priorities. The other is that there is not enough power to force Congress to limit the pork in the budget. Once the president and the congress (both houses) realize they both need to agree on the goals and limit what they can take home to their constituents, then we will start to have a smaller budget and can pay down the debt.

Shawn, Maine   December 20th, 2007 1:17 pm ET

And yet some people still wonder why the US Dollar is losing its footing and the economy isn't doing so well?

This man has put a $40K noose around every Americans neck and sold the contract on our lives to China and Saudi Arabia.

Does Bush think like most Americans that that seventy billion just pops out of peoples paychecks each week? Bush and the "support the troops" Congress are like a crazed teenager let loose with Daddy's credit card. Except this time it is the younger generation that has to pay the bill.

I guess Bush and Cheney shouldn't be worried, eh? They'll just shack up in the last reserve available to them with Osama in a cave in Northern Afghanistan after January 2009.

'Pork' should be totally outlawed. It is nothing more than bribery for campaign contributions. Very corrupt. Both sides of the isle are extremely guilty. Maybe McCain could fix? How can anybody, with any sense at all, believe anything these corrupt politicians say? However, there is some good that comes of 'Pork'. It does stimulate the local economy of the constituent to a degree, and that isn't all bad. We can always use the jobs. The money involved stays in circulation and creates additional incomes and expenditures. But at the expense of a 'Balance Budget'? I wonder.

ANYBODY CATCH THE MOMENT WHERE THE MENSA, IN REFERRING TO FUEL EFFICIENCY, STATED THAT CARS WILL HAVE TO ABIDE BY THE STANDARD OF 35 "MPH"?

He's a pure village idiot and the darling of the neoclowns!!!

hypocrite

I have to disagree with Bush in one regard–when Republicans ran Congress he signed just about everything they passed, which usually were filled with pet projects. However, he is right about one thing: Democrats acted holier-than-thou while seeking office, saying they would end all the earmarks and pork-barrel spending that Republicans were doing. The Dems are doing the exact same thing–there's a word for that: "hypocrisy." Can't say I'm surprised.

Isn't the whole war in Iraq a pet project?

Tim, Atlanta GA   December 20th, 2007 12:05 pm ET

I read somewhere that the amount of funding for pet projects in this bill was roughly half what the Republical-led congress approved last year. I can't remember where I read it though.

Pat Huntington NY   December 20th, 2007 12:04 pm ET

But where was he when his fellow Republicans were doing the same, if not worse with their bridges to nowhere when they were in the majority? This remark from Bush is typical republican hypocracy. Because he had no problem signing off on his republican budgets that excalated the budget defecit so that we are now so in debt to countries like China, that we have not leverage in world affairs. Bush's borrow and spend budgetting has destroyed our national security.

Jose   December 20th, 2007 12:04 pm ET

And before the democrats controlled congress, was Bush out there chastising the republicans? Nope... because they were birds of a feather! I will be so happy in Jan 2009 when he's no longer in the White House. Maybe then and only then can we get the country back to the people it belongs to!

Ca Native   December 20th, 2007 12:00 pm ET

Now Now- Mr President. The Democrats basically caved and gave you everything you asked for: No-Strings funding of the War and an Omnibus Bill set to your spending cap.

Just say Thank You.

(And I'm a Bush-Supporter!)

@wolfblitzercnn: Redskins-Giants always exciting. Both teams have a lot to prove. And Giants can still salvage playoffs. Skins just need a win.
