Tancredo to abandon White House bid

Tancredo will drop out of the presidential race Thursday.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Rep. Tom Tancredo is set to abandon his long-shot bid for the Republican presidential nomination Thursday afternoon, a source close to the Colorado Republican tells CNN.

The announcement is expected to come at a 3 p.m. ET press conference in Iowa.

Tancredo is a fierce proponent of stricter illegal immigration laws, but his campaign struggled to gain traction with the Republican base. An NBC/Wall Street Journal poll out Wednesday night showed the congressman registered less than 1 percent support nationally, and a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll in Iowa Thursday put Tancredo at only 3 percent.

Earlier this week, Iowa Rep. Steve King, a friend of Tancredo's who shares his tough stance on immigration, announced he was backing former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson instead.

For all the people who talk negatively about Tom Tancredo, you should not talk until you are educated on him. He is not a racist. He is the one candidate who spoke the truth from his heart without ever flip flopping and all he truly cares about is the best for the AMERICAN PEOPLE. That is it. Yeah, he doesn't like illegal immigration but that is because ilegal immigration is ruining this country. Hopefully, the American people will realize this before it is too late. Tom has already won in my eyes by bringing the illegal immigration debate to the #1 issue in this presidential election. God Bless Tom Tancredo and America!

That is ashame. We need someone like Tancredo to get control of this country – especially the largest threat we face which is the invasion by the illegal invaders from the south.

Well, I am not feeling the name President Tancredo anyways. It's quite a syllabic leap from President Bush.

At least Tancredo forced candidates to discuss the problem of ILLEGAL immigration and had a plan to deal with it.

Unlike the whimpy liberals that want to compromise the security of the United States so they can pander to illegal aliens.

Tom made an important contribution as a fierce proponent for immigration reform. His persistence has helped bring the critical problem to the nation's attention.

Thanks for your efforts, Tom. Best wishes to you and your family.

Good riddance, this guy is stuck in the 60's. Hope he has time to study the globe and discover how the world has become a small mommunity. Different but necessary.

Goodbye Tom. "don't let the door hit ya where the god lord split ya".

I thought with the departure of that xenophobe, the [R] primary might have a better 'odor' to it. But, geez, everytime I see a story on the [R]s, I'm still getting a wiff of......ASS!!!.

As someone from his home state I wish he would stay in the race just to keep him out of Colorado a little longer. He is an embarrassment

I like the idea of enforcing the immigration laws with the same enthusiasm that the law is enforced upon myself and other Americans. If we could only take all the candidates and hand pick their positions on issues,, we might just wind up with a country. Maybe we could call it the United States of America.

Tough luck Tancredo,, but you should know what the rest of us already know,,,it takes a lot of money to buy the most powerful post in the world.
