Huckabee has decided not to air a negative campaign ad targeting Romney.

Huckabee has decided not to air a negative campaign ad targeting Romney."

DES MOINES, Iowa (CNN) — In a move that surprised even members of his own staff, Mike Huckabee told reporters gathered to see the debut of an Iowa ad attacking his competitor Mitt Romney that he was pulling the spot before it
aired.

After making the announcement, the Republican presidential candidate still showed reporters the ad, which targeted the former Massachusetts governor's record on such issues as taxes, gun control, and abortion.

Romney has already run several Iowa television spots criticizing Huckabee on issues including state spending, immigration, and clemency.

Recent polls show the two neck-and-neck for the lead among registered Republicans in the state, which holds its caucuses Thursday.

At the news conference Monday, the former Arkansas governor said he created the spot to attack Romney because "conventional political wisdom is that when you're hit, and it's beginning to do damage, the smart play is to hit back. And frankly every bit of advice I was getting said that was exactly what we were supposed to do."

But he said that shortly before the press conference, he called his staff and told them he wanted it pulled.
"I just decided that's not the way we want to run it," the former pastor said. "It's never too late to do the right thing."

Huckabee acknowledged that he expected "cynicism" from those who believe that by showing the ad at the news conference he was still launching the attack. But Huckabee said if he had not shown the ad, he expected reporters would have asked to see it.

If the ad ends up airing on Iowa TV stations, it will be because the stations have not yet had a chance to replace it in their schedules, Huckabee said.

Des Moines station KCCI told CNN it had been told this morning to run the ad — then contacted shortly afterwards by the campaign to cancel the original order.

“There had been a discussion about the strategy, a very lively discussion,” a top aide to the Mike Huckabee campaign said after his surreal press conference this afternoon.

Charmaine Yoest told reporters that the debate about running a negative ad against top rival Mitt Romney was strongest “particularly within the [Huckabee] family.”

“The governor has never in his political career run a negative ad. So there was real tension here, and we do feel strongly that his record has been distorted and so the plan was to make sure the record was cleared up,” Yoest added.

Skeptical reporters questioned Yoest about when staffers were notified of the change in strategy and whether the campaign ever truly intended to air the ad, but she refused to give any details except for declaring, “I’ve got a box of dvds and we’re not going to pass them out.”

“At the end of the day the Governor’s the one who makes the decisions about how he wants to run the campaign,” Yoest said.

People, wake up and smell the coffee. The scariest thing about Huckabee is those computer hard drives he destroyed just as he left the governor's office. What was he hiding? The best thing to do when contemplating a purchase is ask the person who already bought one. I've read a lot of comments about Huckabee on the Internet, and a lot of folks in Arkansas who have experienced the leadership of "Tax Hike Mike" first hand don't like him. We have just suffered through almost eight years of secrecy, pig-headed arrogance, and just plain lies. Why would the American people want more of the same? It seems some people in Iowa want just that.
Just as an aside, why do you think George Patacki didn't run for president? Because us New Yorkers, especially those of us in upstate, could give the rest of the country a real earfull, that's why.

Romney claims to have values and all, but then runs a dirty campaign. Not only does all of his flip flopping on major issues concern me, it is his negative campaigning which shows me this guy has no class.

Fred, Gilbert AZ   January 1st, 2008 4:58 pm ET

One last thing atacking Romney because he has been successful on business and wealthy is really smart. Do we want a CEO of America who can live the American Dream or someone who begs others for money. Romney has turned around companies, olympics and he can do the same for America. I have taught mychildren that if they stay in school and work hard anything is possible but I guess some people feel that is a bad thing. They are surely not the republicans of Ronald Reagan.

Fred, Gilbert AZ   January 1st, 2008 4:52 pm ET

david. Huckabee has taken the high road you are kidding right. Let's look at his attacks on Brownback and Romney's religion. He can call Romney dishonest but Romney has not even scratched the surface of Huckabee's record. He is named one of the most corropt politicians by Judicial Watch along with mainly democrats. He accepts gifts and money while governor and while leaving office. He destroys hard drives that could have shown more abuses. He was found guilty of five ehtical violations. He pressures the parole board to release someone who goes on to rape and murder again. This guy is dishonest unethical and would lead Bloomberg to enter the race which would guarantee a democratic victory.

Rick, Sioux Falls, SD   January 1st, 2008 2:24 pm ET

Sounds like the kind of cheap political trick honed by a small state governor through years of experience. You gather the press together (at the state level nobody in the press would dare hit you too hard or they'd be moving out of state to continue their profession). then you do the wrong thing (publicizing the negative ad) while at the same time telling them you're not going to do it - you're going to take the high road (even though you haven't).

Then, one of two things will happen. 1) some of the press will listen to your words and forget your dirty deed - crediting you for taking the high road - press reports will go out saying you're a peach of a guy. Then the press runs the negative ad and tells everyone about it; or 2) the press is critical of you, but they run the negative ad and tell everybody about it.

When you're a flat broke Presidential candidate trying to pull off a huge upset, you want all of the free press you can get. Why should Hubcapabee use his limited resources to pay for the ad when he can generate all kinds of free press by putting the ad into the public sphere and telling everybody "I don't want you to watch it! (wink wink)"?

I still haven't figured out yet which of the Presidential candidates is the Antichrist. I've narrowed it down to Romney, Hillary, Giuliani, and yes - Huckabee.

Richard, Ewing NJ   January 1st, 2008 1:20 pm ET

McCain and Huckabee are correct that Mitt Romney's attack ads are dishonest. They are not issue ads because they distort the truth. Romney's TV ads accused Huckabee's lack foreign policy experience. Well, Romney has no foreign policy experience neither. They were both governor and they have the same kind of experience. When Romney ads uses Condi Rice's "ludicrous" to describe Huckabee foreign policy, that was so misleading that it was a lie. Secretary Rice was commenting one statement Huckabee made about Bush's bunker mentality being ludicrous, not about Huckabee foreign policy. To give you a very simple, I live in Ewing. If someone says the best BBQ is down from the southern states, where Richard lives. Well, I may say it is ludicrous to say I live down south, but that does not mean I believe "the best BBQ is down from the southern states". Romney attack ads on McCain are worse. He accused that McCain support amnesty for illegal immigrants. That is right out a lie. First, let us not forget that Romney supported the bill. Yes, Romney always has multiple positions in very short amount of time. Let's me quote a quick description of the bill:

"Under the Senate bill, he (Bill Frist) said, those who have been in the country two to five years would enter a temporary-worker program, while those inside longer would be eligible for legal status or citizenship after an 11-year probationary period. They would first have to meet other criteria, including learning English, and paying a penalty and back taxes.

Under the Senate legislation, illegal immigrants in the United States less than two years would be returned to their home countries."

These illegal immigrants need to learn English, pay a penalty, pay taxes back and then they enter a 11 year probationary period before becoming a citizen. That is not the amnesty.

Huckabee is trying to play voters for chumps!
Wow, the contemp he has for the public!
He thinks we are fools.
What a slimy, decietful and stupid thing to do.
I hope Huck loses Iowa….he deserves it.

I don't trust Huckabee. He acts lke an innocent sheep, but I can see through him.
He is a mean and sleazy guy underneath. His true color starts to show
as Mitt Romney is taking over him in the poll.

Comment from an Independent: ALL of the Republican candidates look like clowns, for one reason or another. Anti-evolution, blindly pro-war, anti-stem cell research, fear-mongering, striving to abolish the sacred separation of church and state, HYPOCRITICAL to the core. They all have one or more fatal flaws. I feel like they ought to emerge from a tiny clown car at each debate. We can all just be thankful that the Democrates are going to occupy the White House again after our country has very nearly been desroyed by the "W cabal"

David MacMillan   January 1st, 2008 12:16 pm ET

Some people simply have no reasoning ability any more.

After being repeatedly splattered by Romney's blatantly dishonest and misleading ads (it IS misleading to say that you were "tough on drugs like meth" when you know full well that Arkansas meth penalties are FAR higher than those in Massachusetts), Mike's campaign prepared a direct ad to attack Romney's smear tactics. He prepared a press conference to announce and explain the new ad (even made "Enough is enough" banners), but decided after much consideration to NOT resort to negative campaigning and pull the ad. Lest some stations fail to pull the ad in time, he went ahead and held the press conference to explain. He refused to hand out copies of the ad (which he had ready on DVD) and instead showed a low-quality poor-angle projection to the press to prove that this whole thing wasn't just a gimmick.

Mike has run a positive campaign from the beginning. Defending yourself by calling lies for what they are isn't negativity; it's honesty. Even though this negative attack ad was the traditional thing to do, Mike decided not to run it because it would tarnish his reputation and betray the confidence of all the people to whom he said he would not run a negative campaign.

A candidate makes a decision to take the high road, and all you self-proclaimed pundits can do is squall, "He's honestly wanting to run a positive campaign - it must be a trick! I DON'T LIKE HUCKABEE!" You ought to be ashamed of yourselves. Will Americans ever grow up?

Thankfully, most of the voters have grown up enough that they won't be so ready to point the finger. Unlike Rich Boy Romney, Mike chose NOT to sacrifice his integrity for a political advantage, on Thursday this will be to his benefit. His experience, honesty, and integrity paint him in a sharp contrast to the rest of the Republican and Democrat electoral fields and the voter's knowledge of this will carry him straight to November's ballot and January's inauguration.

Oh - and there's nothing misleading about saying Romney never carried out and execution. Mitt says he is tough on crime (an issue important to Iowa voters) but he comes from a state without the death penalty! The public needs to know, but Mike won't lower himself to Romney's level by telling them. Kudos to Mike.

I'm sad for those who have projected onto Huckabee, the candidate that they wanted, only to find his feet are made of clay. I still like his dimples though, and he WAS funny sometimes, but this does NOT make a viable president who can protect the constitution and us!

Romney attacked the RECORDS of his opponents with their stands on ISSUES on his ad, which is what we are SUPPOSED to be comparing. Right??

Huckabee and MaCain both made PERSONAL attacks against Romney, and this last "joke" of a "pulled" add is unbelievable in its slime. So have you "sold your soul, then Mike as you PUT this negative add out — and MADE sure it got played to the media, whose job is to do WHAT? Yes, and with their video cameras all rolling etc??, You even had to work and WORK with the system to get it to show!!

By the way- anyone catch the bit in his press release just before the "pulled" negative add — I paraphrase– "3 min. would not be enough to cover all the problems in my record that my opponents BELIEVE they see" — well he told the truth THERE!!!

Also, I sure wish I could see again the bit on the news last night about body language and how to tell when someone is truthful, as in my memory, when they blink a LOT- it indicates a lie, and when they look down or to the left etc. I remember a certain part where Mike was REALLY blinking, and a LOT of looking to the left and down! Also a LOT of different stories about the time line of when he decided to pull it- and somehow they didn't have time to take negative things off the easels in the room??? — You can just take the poster off the stand, turn it face away and lean it against the wall. — Has he no workers to do this? incredible?? maybe he is too poor to take down the negative posters?

That charge about distortions of his record from Huckabee against Romney- then Mikes' add (that he hopes no one will see??) acts like it is Mitts fault for NO deaths for criminals, when I believe the state does not allow it??? Sheeish!

What about Mikes NOT having a theology degree? Did you people see that he only took SOME classes on religion and went to SOME seminary— which is worse– to make a bigger deal of hunting or of your RELIGION experience??? GO MITT!!!

Erik   January 1st, 2008 11:34 am ET

I think Huckabee is a sincere, likable guy. However, its become increasingly clear that he has a white hot temper and a hard time remaning level headed while under pressure. Overall, Huckabee seems very different to me now than he did at the begining of the his campaign. His charisma seems to be vaporating while being replaced with a frantic furry. But, I still cant help liking the guy - personally.

Keep doing what your heart things is right. we will keep praying for you, trust God we hope to have a candidate with strong moral value this is the most important thing to help this country to rise from the decadency on moral value

J Williamson Buffalo, NY   January 1st, 2008 11:26 am ET

Aw, sweet! If I pull the ad that just proves what a nice and upstanding guy I am, right? Of course, I'll roll it to the media folks so THEY can show it, and I'll save lots of money too, since it's on their dime. Nice going Mike!

Huckbee then: I am not going to say anything bad about Mormoms, BUT don't they believe…..?

Huckabee now: I am not going to release this negative attack ad, BUT if you will just turn your attention for moment to the monitor behind me….

Give me a break. This is so transparent.

I just could not vote for a man like Huckabee! What a snake in the grass! I'm a Christian and I'm not fooled! I much prefer Romney. If Huckabee don't feel the record Romney has given us is correct then why doesn't Huckabee tell us all what is correct?

Jen Cedar Falls, IA   January 1st, 2008 10:53 am ET

OK, this guy comes to Iowa to win the Caucus. He takes time to organize photo ops such as his hunting (if you hunt, vote for me, Elmer Fudd) and running in 17 degree weather (wow, he wants the runners' votes) and his now infamous negative ad that he's low enough to make, but not low enough to show anyone (but the press, right!!!).

With all this time to kill, he still had little knowledge of Pakistan, its borders and the fact that military rule had been halted? He turns it into an immigration topic? His record shows that he was willing to give scholarships to children of illegal immigrants for crying out loud!!!!! He can't provide good answers to why his record shows so much ^taxing, support of illegals, freeing convicts.

Should this man really be chosen to lead our country with such limited international knowledge and a horrible political record? Putting all the religious issues aside, this man is ill-fitted for the job!

This ad-flip/flop just tops it all. He OK'd it, filmed it, called in the press, showed it to them and then ran like a caught robber saying he didn't mean it. Yeah, sure! Free Huck from this nightmare! He can't seriously want to be the President with this type of behavior! The Dem's would eat him alive first anyway! If he thinks the factual ads Romney ran on him were bad, he ain't seen NOTHING yet.

K Wilkinson Texas   January 1st, 2008 10:42 am ET

Jamie   January 1st, 2008 10:37 am ET

I've been reading some comments on this page comparing Huckabee's actions with the ad to dealing with, and I'm paraphrasing, "Iran and/or mean, icky-faced Muslim countries". Could anyone explain the connection? Last I checked, Presidential campaigns always get run along these lines. Lots of people who call themselves conservatives loved Pres. Bush when he was campaigning, and he didn't know the name of the gentleman over in Pakistan who does all that…RULING AND BEING IN CHARGE! Yet we have established fairly strong ties to Pakistan under our current president. The point is, the campaign is an entirely different animal than actual policy making.

Allyson - cedar falls, iowa   January 1st, 2008 10:22 am ET

Huckabee - a man, who is quick to point out the only candidate with a theology degree - is the same man that was a key note speaker at the Southern Baptist Convention in Salt Lake City in 1998 preaching hell, fire and brimstone against the Mormons. Yet, explained he didn't know much about Mormons in the New York Times Magazine article, followed up with a distorted question meant to smear the Mormom faith.

We are respectful of his religion and haven't attacked him for his "wierd" ideas, can't he show others the same respect?

One of our thirteen tenets proclaims, “We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.”

We are not perfect, but I am sure you will see that we are worthy of protection from bigotry.

paul, nyc ny   January 1st, 2008 9:22 am ET

Odd really when you think about it, but the two candidates running for office with their religions emblazoned on their chests like the names of universities on a sweatshirt that they are the two doing the mostt mean-spirited and MOST un-christian like attacks.

Hmmm, I guess we are all part god and part devil.

Linette, Lexington MA   January 1st, 2008 8:44 am ET

TIME magazine: PLEASE write some articles about anybody else than Mike Huckabee. The man would be a complete disaster for the Republican party. Out of the 6 front page articles on the TIME's "Politics" site, 4 of them how a picture of Huckabee. A little biased, aren't we? Get a clue and give America a real choice.

Always interesting to hear from the 26% of the loyal kool-aid drinkers. There is no pride in being a Republican. You had complete control of all three branches of government for 6 years and pi$$ed it away in weekly scandals. Now Trent Lott and the rest are bailing out before their terms are done,

Proud to be American! No pride in being a Republican.

Stan   January 1st, 2008 5:17 am ET

Huckabee has reached a new low as the official "snake in the grass" of this campaign. This is the second time that he has used a backhanded method of attacking others. Not to mention his "not attacking" others by attacking them for pointing out his record. Quite honestly if he is being misrepresented, simply make an add that says "so and so says this about me, actually it was this and I call on my opponent to correct this misrepresentation". That way he doesn't go on the attack, simply points out the mistake in the add and politely calls on his opponent to bring it up a notch. Instead he pulls on his past experience as a preacher to deal with someone who threatens his flock (income) "they are liars and deceivers, I am the only good one here; look, here is a video about how bad they are, but since I am so good you only get to watch it once". Seriously, can we get some candidates who don't have to resort to this to win it. It is sad to see Romney go onto any kind of a questionable attack, just because his opponents have is no reason that he should (thinking McCains 180 year old mother or Huckabee's "innocent" questioning of a reporter about Romney's religious beliefs. Which if these things were innocent it scares me to think that McCain and Huckabee have such little fore thought to not realize what would happen.

Every time I watch or read about the presidential candidates I think of Dave Barry's book about the 2000 presidential election.

As for Ron Paul, all I have got to say is "when did you become a nut bar"? Every fringe group is welcomed with open arms by Ron Paul because when your Ron Paul and 90 years old you are just glad that people are still visiting you and pretending to care about what you say even though in their minds they are already trying to decide what to do with their portion of the inheritance.

Vote Arnold for President (hey, it worked in the Simpson's movie).

Chris in Iraq   January 1st, 2008 5:10 am ET

HA! What kind of idiot does this guy think we are? If he made this decision 1 hour before the press conference, how in the world did he get the backdrop "enough is enough" designed and printed that soon. This was a set up from the beginning and he thinks we (the American people) are so stupid that we should believe him. If he lies about something as trivial as this, why should we believe he will not lie about everything else? If he doesn't have the backbone to just standup and run a negative ad, how in the world would he have the backbone to standup to polls or terrorist nations? The guy thinks we are buffoons and truly believes that he has fooled us.

Lorax   January 1st, 2008 4:53 am ET

Lorax   January 1st, 2008 4:48 am ET

Huckabee has duped the press. He got the press to pay for airing his add content. He even duped the tax payers in Arkansas into financing his personal indulgences. There would be no surprise that he would do the same with our national treasure. Apparently he has even duped churches into actively engaging for his campaign. Any tax exempt organization that is using its coffers to finance or staff to campaign activity for a candidate must answer the law by having their exempt status pulled. There should not be a blind eye to this. By the way does anyone recall what is the definition of a con man is?

Randy   January 1st, 2008 4:46 am ET

Never mind the hypocrisy of showing the ad to the press at the press conference. What about holding the press conference in the first place? If he really wanted to take the high road, he would have just not run the ad and then not told anyone about it. Instead he called a press conference. Judging from the comments on this blog, it has definitely back-fired.

Bryan P.   January 1st, 2008 4:30 am ET

We need to have a man leading this nation that represents CONVICTION not CONVENIENCE, when deciding on what guides them in life. Of course not only Abortion, but on other integrity issues. Especially with all of those recent horrible news reports (google search “abortion clinic problems”) that are talking about the disgusting things that are happening in abortion clinics, like DOCTORS’s not washing their hands all day while performing dozens of procedures and doctors making a living “selling 15 y.o.’s to go through with the operation” so the Doc can pay his mortgage. What happened to “Thou shalt not murder anyway”? Last week I had the honor of hearing Mr. Huckabee preach an amazing Christmas message at Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, Texas. When I think of the United States of America's past God fearing presidents that have had the greatest positive historical impacts for not only our nation, but the nations of the world, names like George Washington and Abraham Lincoln come to mind. There is an abundance of literature preserved from these, and other founding fathers that REGULARY wrote about how GOD is the one that gave us this nation as a gift and that we are a nation built on biblical laws (Remember all of the 10 Commandments now being taken out of government buildings now because of the ACLU, people that hate morality, etc.). These men include other former great American presidents who wrote and spoke often and freely of God and our Christian heritage in America. Mike Huckabee is the first candidate in a long time that reminds me most of those great men who steered our nation through those trying times of the past. We are all Americans and Mr. Huckabee has promised to be the president of all the people of America, no matter what their faith, be it Islam, atheism, Hinduism, or any other belief system. He would respect everyone’s rights to practice their own beliefs, as every president should. President Mike Huckabee would make an incredible 44th President of the United States of America. May God’s protection fall upon this man as a servant of our great nation.

Richard, Ewing NJ   January 1st, 2008 2:24 am ET

Jim Bethlehem , Pa,

Let be honest and stop misleading people. Huckabee is not a neo-con, neither is Bush, Cheney nor Rumsfeld. If you do not know what a neo-con is maybe it is time to look it up. As for you accusation on Huckabee not believing evolution, that was very dishonest. He never said he does not believe in evolution. He said that he believe there is a creator and things do not merely happen by random chance. Please look up Huckabee answer on evolution on youtube if you have not. Many scientists believe that as well. Einstein is not a religious man at all, but he do believe there is a creator somewhere. In fact, one of the most quote Einstein made is that "God doesn't roll dice." Many other famous scientists believe there is a god or gods, but that does not make them anti-evolution.

In fact, I am an atheist and I do not even agree with Einstein there is a God. However, your assertion that "If Huckabee believes in a God, then he must be anti-science" is completely baseless. Unless, you also believe Einstein is anti-science and so do most American scientists are anti-science. You do know most scientists are religious, right?

Richard, Ewing NJ   January 1st, 2008 2:11 am ET

I can completely understand why Huckabee is all upset about Romney. Romney is the first launched misleading negative. Yes, they are not right out lies, but they are very misleading. For example, Romney ads said Huckabee foreign policy is lacking and that Secretary Rice called his foreign policy ludicrous. Well, Condi Rice did not describe Huckabee's foreign policy as ludicrous. Rice was responding to one single aspect of Huckabee comment on Bush. Rice did not make any negative comment about Huckabee foreign policy. Romney ads also accuse McCain wants to give amnesty to all illegal immigrants. Completely misleading. The plan McCain supported will require the illegal immigrants go back to home country, pay a fine, and then they can reapply for legal immigration — that is not the definition of amnesty. When Huckabee hunts, he is not faking it. He has been a hunter and you can find old pictures of him hunting. Romney is the one being dishonest when he said he was a hunter. He hunted twice in his life and the first time is a BB gun and the last time was shooting rats. Romney of course also proclaim that he saw his father matched with MLK, which is completely false.

By the way, I am not a Huckabee fan, but for the Mitt Romney supporters here… your candidate is the one misleading voters.

Jay Bee, USA   January 1st, 2008 1:54 am ET

sam Khuri, you need to watch the news conferences that Huckabee gives. He can't afford attack ads, that's why he uses "attack press conferences". Even people working for him in Arkansas said he carried grudges against those that opposed him. What is the difference between attack ads and attack press conferences?

http://fleetingthoughtsiii.blogspot.com/2007/12/negative-campaign-ads-vs-negative-news.html

Biggest difference: Romney attack ads based on articles with sources published comparing Huckabee's record, Huckabee attack press conferences are personal attacks against Romney. Huckabee is not a "nice" candidate.

The cards are stacked against Huckabee - The conservative group, JudicialWatch.org rates Huckabee number 6 on the list of the Top 10 Most Wanted Corrupt Politicians. The guy has some major problems.

Seriously though, plenty of people will see this and think it's a sign of greatness on Huckabee's part. All the people hating on Huck above, I hear you, but don't sell the guy short. He's got as good a chance as any and better than most.

Cindy   January 1st, 2008 12:50 am ET

IT'S ROMNEY ALL THE WAY TO THE WHITE HOUSE!!! I've been so impressed by Romney's organization and his willingness to spend his OWN money to campaign! He's a man of great success, he's got a proven record of getting the job done!! I commute from the state of WA to the state of MA and have seen the great changes he's made in MA. over the years. As a business woman, I admire the way he does business and that is exactly what we need right now. He knows how to pick the right people in order to get the job done! Everyone in our entire organization is unanimously behind Romney for president!!! Even die hard Democrats have switched.

John   January 1st, 2008 12:47 am ET

Did anyone see the full ad? It made Huck look unflattering.

Lets face it, Huck had blown any positive image he enjoyed.

Marco   January 1st, 2008 12:22 am ET

I think Ron Paul will win the Republican presidential nomination. After that it should be no problem to win the predidency. (www.opponent.de)

marie thomson   January 1st, 2008 12:12 am ET

Want to know why Huckabee cannot win the Presidency in '08? He shouldn't have attacked Mormons. With 5+ Million in the US concentrated in the Western States where elections will be VERY close, Mormons hold the trump card and they will not vote for Huckabee after his nasty anti-Mormon, and anti-Catholic (Brownback) campaigns in Iowa and now this expensive fake Christmas Card in South Carolina Pretending to be from Mitt.

Check out http://www.stopbigots.com to see why Huckabee is toast even if he should get the nomination. MORMONS WILL NOT VOTE FOR HIM and they have been the most reliably conservative Republican block and are needed to win crucial states. Check it out

HOLY CRAP!

Someone above actually wrote this: "Even though I am not a Huckabee fan, pulling the ad was the right thing to do. Unlike Romney, he isn't running a negative, smear campaign against his rivals.Kudos to Huckabee and shame on Romney."

ANYBODY WHO CAN'T SEE THROUGH HUCK'S DISHONEST TRICK TODAY HAS AN IQ OF ZERO.

This guy just keeps getting slimier and slimier, hitting Romney below the belt at every turn and then playing innocent, as if he is above the political game. NEWFLASH FOR YOU HUCK: WE'RE ONTO YOUR TRICKS!

Can anyone ever imagine Romney pulling a dirty stunt like this? It would NEVER happen. Romney's criticicism of his opponents is based on their RECORD and doesn't stoop to name calling and character attacks.

HUCK 'S ANTICS TODAY BASICALLY GAVE THE NOMINATION TO ROMNEY. THANK HEAVENS FOR THAT! ROMNEY WILL MAKE A FINE PRESIDENT.

Janel, St. Paul, MN   December 31st, 2007 11:45 pm ET

I could perhaps have had some respect for Huckabee until he just had to show the reporters what a "good guy" he was, but wanted them to see his horrible ad. Is this the Christian thing to do?????

Shame on you Huckabee for being such a hypocrite!

Go Obama!

Paul   December 31st, 2007 11:28 pm ET

The venom being shown here is the direct result of decades of nasty and negative politics and the country is being ripped apart by it. Does the fact that negative ads do indeed work make anyone here REALLY feel good?….does it inspire hope?

Alot of Americans are getting extremely tired of this kind of hatred being thrown in every direction, and the unity that we experienced on 911 was even more fleeting than many feared it would be.

Candidate differences on issues can be drawn from debates and by researching their position papers, and it does us no good to discuss them in a disrespectful manner.

If we stay on this course…..then America is on its descent. Remember, Islamic extremists and our other adversaries have a deep reservoir of patience, and anything that divides us like the disrespect being rolled out here plays right into their hands…..and this discussion is a study in bitter division.

Luis   December 31st, 2007 11:27 pm ET

Is the HuckaBust campaign getting an assist from Karl Rove??

Sure sounds like a ploy out of the Rove playbook…….

Make the tape, hold a conference to tell people you are not running any
negative adds, then show the tape anyway to a room full of reporters??

HuckaBust is either getting a sleazy Rove assist,
or hes running out of money and using the media
to help "dish" his dirt for free?

Dale Davis, Glendora, California   December 31st, 2007 11:11 pm ET

I warned all you guys early about this country bumpkin! He masquerades as a sweet, innocent, and amiable guy, but underneath his veneer is a proud and arrogant man, who is very anti-Mormon. He not only blundered early in his campaign about the Jesus/Satan brothers thing, but he has been the keynote speaker at an anti-Mormon rally in 1998 at Salt Lake City, under the auspices of the Southern Baptist Convention. Additionally, it has been reported that all of his previous sermons from years past are locked-up. What else does he have to hid? He is the phoney.
Huck's run for the Presidency will soon fizzle-out and justifiably so. He should eventually play elecric bass in Itchycoo Park, for the remainder of his career.

Greg, St. Louis   December 31st, 2007 10:59 pm ET

I am disappointed by all the negative coverage in the press and in the blogs that Huckabee has received on his press conference regarding his negative add against Romney. As usual, the press builds someone up in the public eye and then tears them down, all to build excitement for their broadcasts and columns. If folks are really paying attention they would know that Huckabee has a new, small campaign staff and is obviously struggling with how to run his campaign, especially advertising, with limited time and very limited money. As for me, I am convinced Huckabee and his campaign staff were indeed conflicted over when and how often to run the negative add they produced in response to Romney's highly effective attack adds (as shown in the Iowa polls). I fail to see how changing strategy for a TV add in a campaign can be compared to changing one’s position on abortion, etc.!

Showing the add in the press conference made sense because the add was set to run on TV one day anyway and the add states many of the same criticisms of Romney that Huckabee has been saying in his campaign stops. Huckabee recognizes that there is a difference in stating his criticisms in a TV add. It is highly invasive and repulsive to many Americans to have negative political attack adds inserted into their favorite TV programs before every election. (These are also more expensive and very often more effective.)

I agree that Huckabee cannot say he has ran a purely positive campaign, but to me he has not responded in kind to even attempt to blanket the airwaves and mailboxes of each Iowan with negative Romney propaganda.

As for the criticism that Huckabee was disingenuous with pulling his add but then showing it to the press, many fewer Iowans will see the add now, and again, it will not be thrust upon them in their living rooms, unless they are looking for it on CNN, today. Surely no one thinks that this short-lived "free advertising" is designed to or will be any match for the Romney add campaign. And I am a Democrat…

Rick, Washington DC   December 31st, 2007 10:49 pm ET

not change the fact that is an ugly politician that would do anything

Jen Cedar Falls, IA   December 31st, 2007 9:55 pm ET

This may shock several of you but I truly believe Mike Huckabee has been purposely, although subtly sabatoging his campaign for the last week. I don't believe for 1 second that he really wants to be President. of all the USA. He just wants to be Pastor of all the Baptists.

He realizes now he's in over his head. Especially since he knew NOTHING about Pakistan, can't defend his political records with any substantial explanation and has obviously taken all the blows he can take. It's a knock-out folks, let the guy out of the ring, would you?!?!

The Democrats would EAT HIM UP and I think HUCK WANTS OUT! Free Huck from his nightmare! And pull for Romney, he can handle it all from campaigning to running this country and making it the best it can be!!

Tim   December 31st, 2007 9:54 pm ET

I don't know guys. I am a hard core democrat and I find myself pulling for the underdog. Who is he beholden to? No one. That is one reason he is looked at so favorably. Being an Arkansan I know that there was a lot of things that had to be handled. School consolidations to maintain equality of schooling in rural area's, drought, and road construction projects. Arkansas now is showing a record surplus and instead of squandering it before he left office Huckabee passed it onto his successor, a democrat. Who is now lowering the tax rates. Interesting at the least, he will get another look from me if it if not Obama on the other side.

Jim Bethlehem , Pa   December 31st, 2007 9:52 pm ET

This guy is a con artist. He makes Elmer Gantry look like a saint…He seemed like an honest sincere guy for a while then came the ridiculous hunting trip and now this..What a pathetic candidate.

Deborah   December 31st, 2007 9:47 pm ET

I admire Huckabee's sense of integrity and ethics, especially in the sort of mudslinging that' s been going around. But I do not want this man to be president. He has given me no confidence that he actually knows anything about foreign policy or economics, or that he has the wisdom to lead America.

Anonymous   December 31st, 2007 9:44 pm ET

From the responses to this story you would get the feeling most of the people are Romney supporters and like Romney himself they are trained in suttle attempts at mis information. Put Mustache on him and he looks like a certain german! Bad character assination for anyone to do (politics or not) He has no children how can a man with no children make a good president. This writer needs to check his facts (Huckabee has 3)maybe he should learn more on Huckabee and most issues before commenting.
I have no problem with anyone commenting on an issue or a statement but to just scream the man is wafling(point out the candidate who has not I can find cases in everones record and statements ) Making slams about his stance on being a Christian( All Candidates have right to their own view of Religion including Romney)
Sooner everyone campaigns on issues sooner America will have a better electorial process and good candidates to choose from. Most of this blog is some what comical in that it shows the lack of most of the readers ability to differentiate between facts and emotional bias.
I'm not sold on Huckabee, McCain , Rudy G or Romney as the Republican nominee the more time we spend on stuff like this and not issues the poorer we will all be on finding the right candidate

John S.   December 31st, 2007 9:42 pm ET

This is a punch to the face! Yes Huckabee, I'm as smart as your foreign policy.

Jimmy Crackhorn   December 31st, 2007 9:36 pm ET

Huckabee has no children. Huckabee professes to be such a staunch Christian and does not believe in evolution but creationism. So much for the national science foundation, so much for space exploration. Lets close MIT and JPL. I bet he thinks nuclear weapons were invented by Evangelicals. NOT, try Germans and Jews. How ironic!!

We should stop funding and pushing for higher grades in math and science, after all, that's why we have the chinese as our biggest supplier of toys and technology. Do we even make our own weapons systems or did we send all of our schematics and drawings so they could build them for us? This country is being looted by the likes of the so-called neo-CONS…they are con artists and this guy is right up there with Romney on being a CON MAN.

I can't wait to ask taxpayers to cough up every last dime they have to fund a war we don't need just because this man is so delusional he thinks the God Almighty is whispering in his ear "…armageddon…" and if this country buys one of these two guys BS then the world deserves to end because it's over populated with idiots.

Winter_mike   December 31st, 2007 9:30 pm ET

How can anyone here believe that Huckabee pulled the ad just to "pretend" he has integrity? A 30-second premium that would reach tens of thousands of viewers on Election Week does not come cheap. It is a waste to his financial resources to do so. My guess is that his political advisors are tearing their hair out, having advised him to make the ad, and he was morally against it from the start, waiting to put his foot down until the last moment.

I support McCain, but an act that seems to look honest from far away MIGHT still be honest when scrutinized up close. Stop blasting Huckabee for preventing needless mud-slinging, if weakly so.

Pat S.   December 31st, 2007 9:27 pm ET

Yes, But Romney has Character Issues with Lying, and also he belongs to a false religion (who knows how that could affect his judgement - as in some cases no religion is better than false religious cult).

hugh, phoenix, AZ   December 31st, 2007 9:20 pm ET

Isn't funny that CNN runs a headliner of Romney's untruths….

But this Huckabee story plays about the 5th story down??? Why is the media so afraid of Mitt Romney?

Oh I know because he can beat the democrats..

Greg   December 31st, 2007 9:18 pm ET

If Huckabee really wanted to run a clean campaign he would have just pulled the ads without showing reporters. This was a publicity stunt. If he waffles on something this basic then he isn't as morally strong as he trys to project.

Tyler   December 31st, 2007 9:05 pm ET

If all he wanted to do by showing it was to prove that it existed, why didn't he ask the reporters to turn their cameras off?

J.B.   December 31st, 2007 8:43 pm ET

Are you serious Justin from Des Moines? Huckabee has 3 kids! Talk about just coming up with lies. It's amazing to me how some of these people just hate Mike Huckabee.

I like the guy a lot. I think he's a good man. He's an honest politician. A good communicator. And regardless of whether someone votes for him or not, there needs to be respect.

Do you think you could stand up to the pressure this man has? After having all of these criticisms thrown at you unjustly? I admire his courage to take this stand.

John   December 31st, 2007 8:33 pm ET

Wow, elect him because he's a breeder! That's the lamest reasoning I've heard yet.

jacob   December 31st, 2007 8:28 pm ET

I am not sure how to feel about this. He has been consistent with his no negative ads policy. But commen sense politics says you are supposed to fight back when attacked. His turning the other cheek may cost him Iowa.

annette   December 31st, 2007 8:27 pm ET

Because he was hoping to look as if he was the "good guy" by walking out to the media and saying he was pulling it. He also was hoping the media would do his dirty work by playing it for him, he has hinted that it might end up on "youtube".

Just trying to get more free coverage.

Huckabee is a snake!

charlie   December 31st, 2007 8:18 pm ET

you forgot to add the part where after showing the ad to the media who were there, they broke out laughing. Huckabee is soo funny. He must think everyone is as stupid as he is if we can't see through his thin veiled attempt to manipulate the voters and the media. "Look at me, I'm taking the high road, but by the way don't forget to talk about my negative ad I just showed the press corp. But I'm not showing this ad really!" I bet Jon Stewart is dying during this writer strike with all this great material.

Michael Allen   December 31st, 2007 8:15 pm ET

The pro Romney press is already attacking Huckabee by saying that he contrived this press conference to attack Romney and be a nice guy at the same time. How sad that we are so used to putrid dirty politics that when a man like Mike Huckabee does the right thing, we find a way to drag him down. I do not have anything against Mitt. If America wants 8 more years of tax breaks for corporate billioniars who send all their jobs over seas. Along with a never ending war in Iraq then vote Mitt and live with it. For me, I want a fresh start without having to drink the Koolaid and vote for a liberal left wing democrat. If Mitt does spend his way to the nomination then I will join the Lou Dobbs movement and register Independent.

Cade Clements, Midland   December 31st, 2007 8:08 pm ET

There isn't much negative you could say about Romney, so Huckabee's team didn't have much to say. Romney is a successful family man, business man and political leader!

Romney is a force for positive change…..just what our country needs!

Go Mitt….take Iowa!!

Jess   December 31st, 2007 8:07 pm ET

Why claim to have a degree in theology and then refuse to say whether or not Mormons are Christians? Huckabee likes to have it both ways. He maintains the public image of a nice guy at all costs while his underlings go about carrying out the tactics of religious bigotry against Romney - like those we have seen recently in South Carolina.

sal   December 31st, 2007 8:05 pm ET

Does getting involved in politics for a year or 6 months give the american people something to do? I cant figure out any other reason why they would even support Hillary or Obama Or Bloomberg or anyone like this…You cant say with a straight face that you read the news everyday, you wouldnt be saying half the things people have been saying for the past few months about any of these people…Just like the american people as a whole these politicans are generican biproducts of each other formed out of the corportate mold…Dosnt anyone want america to do something again someday? Dosnt anyone want to make money again someday, not have college loan scams when the future is right around the corner and you HAVE to go to college, fictitious morage rates, interest rates, houseing slumps, illegal taxation, over taxation of individuals, the illegal income tax for individual citizens, corporations not saying any taxes at all, america the consumer welfare state, putting into power and supporting numerous dictators throughout south america and the middle east, not moving forward technologicly, crumbling infustructure, poor poor poor education, poor moral values, a violent society, unneccessary school shoots, gun deaths, teachers constantly having sex with their students, the world bank, nafta, cafta….The excuses this country has given in the last 20 years as "progess" or change is untrue..There selling everyone out on this page and across this country, they want you to starve, they want you to be poor, they want to make sure you need to work to pay off all your debts so at least you never ask for a raise in pay, while they pay you 22,000 a year in a market requiring a college degree. Ceo's in this country are getting multi year bonus's of 100 million dollars, people are paying 37% intrest on credit cards, paying 30 % on morage rates, giving people locked in "rates" knowing full well people arnt reading the fine print, the federal reserve charging us for buying money from them, bombing other countries and forming an economy dependent on going to war as a source of capitalism while calling it spreading freedomism, spreading constant lies and letting the meida continue them on without doing anything about it, not saving energy, not caring about the enviroment, health care scams, price of drugs, quality of drugs, quality of science, cost of science, cost of drugs that arnt safe for you, the dangers of legal drugs, the war on drugs, sending money out to leaders murdering their own people because we want to trade with them, letting captialism get out of control and take over the govnt, people being blind to what others are doing to them and using them for…This could go on forever, as far as i know im still free and so is everyone else should probably try and enjoy life a little in this new year and really get some things done

Paul Thompson   December 31st, 2007 8:00 pm ET

Romney has more money than sense.

That he thinks that he can buy this election is the story.

If someone lies about or distorts another candidates record,
that should be it….they're out!

David C   December 31st, 2007 8:00 pm ET

If Huckabee really did not want to run an "attack" add, he would have never released it to the TV stations or the media. This isn't even flip-flopping, this is talking out of both sides of his mouth “This morning I ordered our staff to pull the ad I told them I do not want it to be run.” Then Huckabee played the ad for every news outlet in the country. Hmmm. . . Actions speak louder than words Huck.

Lorax   December 31st, 2007 7:45 pm ET

That is slick way to draw attention to it and get free air time on it. How much free run time is it getting by the press that is showing it in part or whole to satisfy the curiosity?

Ben   December 31st, 2007 7:44 pm ET

I hope Romney pulls his negative garbage now. I'm sick of it.

Christopher   December 31st, 2007 7:42 pm ET

Another great example of a purported Christian
having it both ways. See how holy I am by not
showing this ad?

What an idiot.

Allan Wynne   December 31st, 2007 7:36 pm ET

I agree, there is not much negative you can say about Romney's life of service, family focus and business success. He will make our government better and our country stronger in all the ways it matters. Romney is a very admirable man with an admirable life record. This is a man our country can be proud of!

Romney 2008!

Cameron Davidson   December 31st, 2007 7:32 pm ET

Huckabee should continue to serve Arkansas very well. Particularly if the state puts some spending limits in place and restrict his work as a judge. It is a landlocked state….somewhere in the middle of the country…..a good distance from our borders….where his mistakes will not hurt us much.

Somehow, as governor of Arkansas, he was able to serve as judge and jury for complex capital crimes and determine some criminals should be set free in spite of the legal system that put them in prison. This reminds me of the embarassing way President Clinton left his presidency. I do think Governors should govern and Judges should judge.

Huckabee may be a great preacher and a pretty decent person, but Arkansas is where he belongs!

Joe Nada   December 31st, 2007 7:29 pm ET

Huckabee must think we just fell off the turnip truck. Only a fool would believe that the avowed dirty trickster Ed Rollins would not play a hand in Huckabee's stunt. Better luck next time governor, we're on to your lies.

Laura Nason   December 31st, 2007 7:21 pm ET

What a bunch nonsense. He's not going to air it? But he's going to show it to all the reporters so he makes sure the contents gets out there and then brag what a NICE person he is. And then when it gets on the air ANYWAY, because it's already been distributed, he can claim it as an accident.
What he IS is a hypocrite, just like the rest of them, and I hope this nonsense backfires on him, BIG TIME.

Jay Clarke   December 31st, 2007 7:14 pm ET

Huckabee must have realized there is no death penalty in Massachusetts just before he ran the ad. What a stupid thing to do….Point out that Romney's State had no executions while he was governor. I quess he did't know Massachusetts did not have the death penalty. He really needs to check the facts before he opens his mouth. If he were president he might accidentally start world war three.

Earl E   December 31st, 2007 7:04 pm ET

That is one smart way to not pay for an ad but get it shown anyway. I saw the ad on the nightly news, they showed the part about Romney and his spending. It is amazing just how stupid the American people have become. Huckabee has only a chance if the MSM decide to give him a chance.

I can't wait to see who the mainstream media decides will be your next president.

Who would Jesus bomb?

He'd bomb those islamo-facsists terrorist suicide bombers.

What a joke we have become.

Weak, tired, fat, useless american losers. Got puched in the stomach on 911, so why not overthrow some country and steal their oil.

Weak, little, sad, stupid america. Go play a video game and eat some fat-burgers.

Lori   December 31st, 2007 6:54 pm ET

And then he proceeded to show all the reporters the video and give all the reporters a free copy of the video. What a stunt. Slimy.

Drew   December 31st, 2007 6:48 pm ET

Huckabee is a genius. He certonaly knows how to create buzz.

Ryan   December 31st, 2007 6:40 pm ET

Despicable. He gets to show the add anyway and publicly comes off as some kind of saint. How self-righteous can you get? Does anyone buy this baloney?

Doug   December 31st, 2007 6:36 pm ET

I am proud of you Mike Huckbee! Stay presidential and positive, because the American people need that kind of leadership in the White House! Doug Temecula, Ca

Michael from Texas   December 31st, 2007 6:30 pm ET

Huckabee, What an under-handed, sneaky, dishonest attack!

Alice Newman Center Harbor NH   December 31st, 2007 6:23 pm ET

change of heart? change of strategy? Just like Mike: oh so innocently ask questions about Mormanism that grab the headlines and the apology comes at the bottom of the obit section.

Mike still showed the reporters the ad so he gets to go negative, while seemingly to be positive and still get his negative message out…. and still he spins why reporters got to see it. If reporters asked, and he didn't really want the ad out, be a true-blue republican and "just say no."

Also note: if the ad gets shown, it will be because the stations didn't update their schedules: again and always- "not my fault"

Mark   December 31st, 2007 6:15 pm ET

Huckabee is a guy who can't bear to have someone inspect his record, or discuss the issues that matter to people. Instead he relies on one-liners to illicit an emotional reaction, with no supporting evidence.

Huckabee's message is, "My opponent insists on discussing important issues, but he is a dishonest man and I refuse to say anything negative, so I will not discuss issues." Clever, but it's hypocritical and most people see through the smokescreen.

When it comes to ethical conduct, all I need to know is the number of times each candidate was fined for ethical violations:

Mitt Romney: Zero.

Mike Huckabee: Six.

ben   December 31st, 2007 6:12 pm ET

Huckleberry is a hypocrite!!!!

I won't run negative add but I will show the media in hopes they give it free air time. Does he really think the media are fools??/

He acts holier then thou.
He running on the I'm more Christian then you card.
He thinks being funny is more important then answering hard questions.

Today was a huge blunder and only helps Mitt.

Iowans are starting to see Huckleberry's true colors and more importantly are examining his record!!

Mitt is a proven leader in the business world and in Government.

Scott, Idaho Falls, ID   December 31st, 2007 6:11 pm ET

That is great Huck, spend an entire day at the end of a race just to show everyone how much of a christian you are by not running the negative ad that you prepared. Sounds like great advice from Rollins (Huckabees campaign advisor) who was "quoted by Time magazine as saying he paid off African-American ministers not to advocate the election of the Democratic opponent." BostonGlobe Dec 14th

Jon   December 31st, 2007 5:58 pm ET

So Huckabee decides not to pay money to show the ad, then instead shows it to the media, who will then surely play it over and over again for free? Very shrewd, but I'm not buying his "holier than thou" attitude. And his reason for showing the ad to reporters? Because if he didn't show it, then reporters might ask to see it! Very noble.

NEWT G CHICAGO, ILL   December 31st, 2007 5:50 pm ET

HUCKADEAN!

Jim Flynt   December 31st, 2007 5:48 pm ET

Good for you, Mike Huckabee. It takes class to decide not to go negative. Stay with your message of hope for the future of our nation. It's what got you where you are today and it's what will win you the White House. I really like two things you plan to do. (1) Your plan to build a border fence and stop illigal imigration and (2) your commitment to make our nation energy independent in 10 years. John Kennedy had a plan to put a man on the moon by the end of the decade. If we can be energy independent in a decade it will be the greatess accomplishment of any president this century. Stay positive and keep fighting for us!!

Ed,Ellenville,New York   December 31st, 2007 5:03 pm ET

Cutting his losses?

Chris, Middletown, CT   December 31st, 2007 4:58 pm ET

And yet…he still showed the ad to the press…..we know HRC supporters believe anything….do Mikes supporters as well?

Jonathan, UT   December 31st, 2007 4:46 pm ET

Genius, Huckabeen. Now when stations do air the add you can say you "tried to stop it". Maintaining your "positive" look while airing a negative add is pretty slick.

Paul   December 31st, 2007 4:44 pm ET

Put a little mustache on Huckabee and he looks like the man from Germany.

jane   December 31st, 2007 4:42 pm ET

So is Huckabee — like Clinton– (and Pontious Pilot)– trying to keep his hands clean??

He SHOWS to reporters the add he says he CANCELED (like they aren't going to spread the news?) and it is not his fault if stations haven't had time to replace it on air so it still shows!!!

This from the guy who said earlier he would never do attack adds.TOTAL FLIP FLOP to LOWER ground (while Mitt came to higher ground on abortion with NO flop back!)

What if this was concerning some Muslim foreign country– what would THEY react to if he just attempted to say it wasn't his fault? They react violently to cartoons??? Huckabee has gone to LOWER ground, and still flopping!!!

Paul   December 31st, 2007 4:41 pm ET

I'm a die-hard Mike Huckabee supporter because of his positive message and the hope that this country can be united again with some semblance of bipartisanship. Negative ads, sadly, may have short-term benefits but the long-term damage is illustrated, I believe, in the nasty partisan tone of American politics today.

I believe the Governor in his heart just does not like to be negative and attack opponents, and I respect him even more for what he did today. The cynicism his decision is being met with as we speak is just a by-product of the negative approach candidates have taken for a couple decades now.

And none of us are any better for it.

jane   December 31st, 2007 4:36 pm ET

They said that Clinton "kept her hands clean" but this takes the cake!!–

Is Huckabee like 'Pontious Pilot washing his hands of Jesus death in now saying he PULLED the add, and not his fault if stations didn't replace it??? my my!!

So, he canceled going to his APPEARANCE at church, so he could make the add,

then he sends it to the stations, and calls a press conference, THEN says he is canceling it- BUT shows it to reporters ANYWAY, because they might have asked to see it????

Trying to have his cake (attack) and keep it (his hands clean) too??

AND HE CALLS ROMNEY FLIP FLOP.

Joe   December 31st, 2007 4:33 pm ET

Has Huckabee lost his grip??

Between that news confeence today and his comments pertaining to the Bhutto assasination, you have to wonder whether he and/or his campaign have totally unravelled.

Carol, in Wilmington   December 31st, 2007 4:33 pm ET

Well, it seems that Huckabee is the candidate with the most integrity! Romney wouldn't bat an eyelash to drop a negative ad! He feigns to dislike them, but Willard knows full well they're running them against McCain and Huck! For shame Mitt!

Jon Sanderson   December 31st, 2007 4:31 pm ET

Huckabee will pretend that he pulled the ad because he wanted to be "nice." However, he probably decided not to run it because he thinks it will damage his image as the "nice" candidate. The fact is: HUCKABEE IS NOT NICE. Nor has he stayed above the fray. He has hit Romney below the belt numerous times in subtle ways. THIS GUY GET'S NO SYMPATHY from me. He is a weak candidate and a dishonest person. Fortunately his candidacy is about to hide. BYE BYE HUCK!

Sterling   December 31st, 2007 4:30 pm ET

HAHAHA…This guy is a joke. Can you imagine Huck using this philosophy to deal with threatening countries?

I can see the headlines now:
"After being directly attacked by an enemy President Huckabee decided to play nice and not counter attack. However, he then subtly bombed the enemy anyway."

Seriously…He is simply too soft yet deceitful to lead our nation.

Dean   December 31st, 2007 4:29 pm ET

Why make the add if your not going to show it?

Geoffrey   December 31st, 2007 4:22 pm ET

I don't believe that slick Huck is pulling this ad in order to "do the right thing." On the contrary, he is being manipulative and playing the martyr, to make Iowans think he is a more noble candidate. It's purely a political move and he is being self righteous. If this is not obvious to the readers out there, particularly Iowans, then you have the wool being pulled over your eyes.

Slick Huck is pulling another holier than thou move to look better than his fellow Christian Romney. Enough is enough.

Conservative4Life, IN   December 31st, 2007 4:21 pm ET

Oh my goodness, he even waffles on his own commericals!!! How is he going to stand up to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad?

Dean   December 31st, 2007 4:19 pm ET

Why even make the add???

Kyle   December 31st, 2007 4:16 pm ET

For someone who has gone on and on about Romney and his negative ads and how Romeny is acting Desperate. HUCKABUST sure goes NEO-NEGATIVE here.
HypocriteHuck go back to what you do best, preaching to the poor and taking their money and gifts. How is it possible you are going to take America back for Christ when it is religious Hypocrites such as yourself that make people stop believing in God let alone Christ.
Seriously you think that by telling everyone you made a negative ad and then showed as proof that you made it and decided not to run it because you were the better man is going to work? Do you really think that Iowans or Americans can be manipulated so easily? Just because you can manipulate your flock who are desperate and in need when you manipulate them does not mean this will work on the rest of us.
You think that being Anti-Abortion gives you the right to display pictures of aborted fetuses in public spaces where little kids have to be subjected to those pictures is ok?
Hatred, Bigoted and just plain ignorant!
I would vote for Putin to be the American President long before you!

Jordon Sumner   December 31st, 2007 4:15 pm ET

Looks like Huckabust pulled the absolute most hypocritical move a politician can make on the campaign trail.

N. Wisconsin   December 31st, 2007 4:14 pm ET

PATHETIC That's all I have to say about Huckabee

Kyle   December 31st, 2007 3:58 pm ET

HUCKABUST!!!!
This guy is just pure Looney! He has no control over his emotions. He would send Nukes a flying in his first year. Is this guy seriously a candiate for President of the United States! I mean wow did youher what he had in the ad? Here is a some more dialogue from the meeting with the press.

"In what has to be one of the most bizarre political press conferences in recent times, Huckabee told a packed room of reporters that he was pulling a negative TV ad his campaign had produced to respond to Romney's attacks.

"The cookie cutter approach says you get hit, you hit back,” Huckabee told the reporters, adding, “I think that the Washington way often has been effective. But there may be a better way, and I hope that we can prove that's exactly the case."

Then — via a laptop projector — he showed the ad anyway to the several dozen journalists in the room.

Adding to the spectacle, the sound of the ad didn't work for several minutes — until the press got to hear it one time. The ad, which his campaign said cost $30,000 to produce, begins with Huckabee speaking to the viewer. "I'm Mike Huckabee, and I approve this message, because Iowans have a right to know the truth about Mitt Romney's dishonest attacks on me and even an American hero, John McCain."

Then an announcer takes over. "Romney's record? Over $700 million in new taxes. Left office with a deficit. No executions. Supported gun control. And Romney's government mandated health plan provided a $50 co-pay for abortion."

Huckabee has the last word. "If a man is dishonest to obtain a job, he'll on the job," he says in the ad. "Iowans deserve better."

"Hopefully, this is an ad that you will see just in this room," he told the reporters.

Asked why he would announce he's pulling a negative ad — but show it anyway — Huckabee replied, "If I didn't show it, you'd say I never had [the ad]."

On his decision to pull the ad, Huckabee added, "If it hurts me, it hurts me… I'm taking a risk here. I know I am. If it completely makes it so he pulls away in a dramatic way, then I'll probably be the last guy to ever do this. But I'd like to be the first one to ever try.

"Thursday night, I will let you know if it was smart."

No presidential candiate Republican or Democratic is as scary of a candiate as Huckabust.

Rich   December 31st, 2007 3:53 pm ET

This guy is such a weasel….

I wasn't going to spend money on this advertisement, so I will just show and give you the media a copy and you can be the bad guys while it looks like I am "turning the other cheek" to continue my pan handling to the religous right.

Man, this guy wants women back in the kitchen, everyone being Christian, and no one telling him he is wrong. I take back what I said in a previous statement where I thought he reminded me of Osama. This guy is Osama's twin!

Larry   December 31st, 2007 3:50 pm ET

McCain and Huckabee are the desperate ones…they don't want anyone to know or ask about their records! Romney has been having "Ask Mitt Anything" meetings for over a year he's not afraid to discuss his past or his positions. Has Huckabee or McCain been so open?….NO, in fact they won't even address what Romney has brought to light! They're just side-kicks for one another and their only rebuttal to Romney is "Liar".

Romney is by far the best candidate, he will provide the kind of leadership, knowledge, and rational needed to erase our trade deficit, ween our foreign dependency of oil, and strengthen the family (his family looks pretty exemplerary to me).

Huckabee is having a political meltdown.

Val Davydov, Agawam, MA   December 31st, 2007 3:50 pm ET

Doesn't he look like Adolf Hitler on this picture? This is "what" will happen to all of you that don't vote for me! Do some still think that he is a viable candidate? And what is he trying to proof by this yet another fiasco? Because I am so nice I am not going to attack someone else? Come on! This guy doesn't even know how to run his own campaign! Is that how he would run our country?

Enough is enough!

Romney 08!

Fred   December 31st, 2007 3:45 pm ET

Even though I am not a Huckabee fan, pulling the ad was the right thing to do.

Unlike Romney, he isn't running a negative, smear campaign against his rivals.

Kudos to Huckabee and shame on Romney.

Justin, Des Moines IA   December 31st, 2007 3:42 pm ET

It occurs to me that this guy doesn't even have kids. As an American father of 3, and like most of the rest of you, I don't know how this guy could relate to American families. Personal life is absolutely up for scrutiny when it comes to public office. There's nothing wrong with never having children, but for the leader of our nation not to have ever had any would seem quite surprising indeed. Why not look to a man who has a solid family, who has been married only once, who has had all his kids with the same woman, and who has kids who actually like him. Romney virtually the only Republican candidate who has all that.
