Huckabee appeared on The Tonight Show Wednesday, despite the ongoing strike.

MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) — Republican Mike Huckabee, a presidential candidate sounding a populist theme, appeared on the "Tonight Show" with Jay Leno on Wednesday despite the strike and picketing by the show's writers.

Earlier Wednesday, Huckabee said he supports the writers and did not think he would be crossing a picket line, because he believed the writers had made an agreement to allow late night shows back on the air.

"My understanding is that there was a special arrangement made for the late-night shows, and the writers have made this agreement to let the late night shows to come back on, so I don't anticipate that it's crossing a picket line," Huckabee told reporters traveling with him Wednesday from Fort Dodge to Mason City.

In fact, that is true only of David Letterman, who has a separate agreement with writers for his "Late Show."

Told he was mistaken and that writers had cleared only Letterman's show, Huckabee protested:

"But my understanding is there's a sort of dispensation given to the late-night shows, is that right?"

Told again that he was wrong, Huckabee murmured, "Hmmm," and, "Oh," before answering another question.

The former Arkansas governor faced an unfriendly reception.

A picketer outside the Burbank, Calif., studio where Leno tapes his show held a sign saying, "Huckabee is a scab." Another picketer carried a sign saying, "Huckabee, what would Jesus do?"

"I think it's just another reason not to vote for him," said Allan Katz, a veteran TV writer who was picketing.

Huckabee said he stood with the writers.

"I support the writers, by the way. Unequivocally, absolutely," he said. "They're dead right on this one. And they ought to get royalties off the residuals and the long-term contracts."

"I don't think anybody supports the producers on this one," he added. "Maybe the producers support the producers, but I think everybody in the business and even the general public supports the writers."

So? Huckabee still won Iowa by a substantial margin. And? Your point? Jay Leno also crossed the picket line, against his own fellow union brethren.

trailerparkbarbie   January 3rd, 2008 10:04 pm ET

Ya know why Huckabee went on Leno?

Cause none of the other candidates were invited.

Don't fool yourself into believing that Hillary wouldn't have hiked her skirt up around her waist and jumped the security fence to get in the studio.

Edwards wouldn't have to jump, his hairdresser would life him over….gently.

Obama would be afraid to cross Oprah by going on a show other then her show.

Richard -

Exactly - "have better benefits especially retirement and health insurance than non-unionized workers."

Good thing its "free money" - if the choice to make widgets in our "better benefits especially retirement and health insurance" world - or somewhere else - the world is choosing somewhere else….thats why the scumbag unions have infiltrated the municipalities - its our tax dollars now…

Unions are a cancer now….they had a time and place (50 years ago) - not anymore - they are abusive….everyone knows it (except union pandering Democrats) - look for the mantra of the Democrats/Unions - we "deserve" and we are "entitled" - can you name another political group that pays their employees the exact same percentage increase regardless of merit?? wait….I can….communism

Richard of Cherokee CA   January 3rd, 2008 7:38 pm ET

All this anti-union BS is just that, BS. The USA and its Unions has the world's highest level of worker productivity according to the UN and worldwide economists. Organized workers have a voice at the job, earn more, experience less discrimination based on sex and race, and have better benefits especially retirement and health insurance than non-unionized workers.

It is BS that unions promote dead wood workers. ALL work places have "dead wood." As soon as one "dead wood" worker leaves, it isn't too long before the workers declare another worker to be "deadwood." It is the nature of the workplace. A sad but true fact.

And Huckabee is a scum bucket to know that the picket line was up and then cross it to be on the show AND then to say he supports the writers, He lies. He crossed their picket line. He does NOT support them. He lied. Haven't we had enough blatant liers in the White House recently? We can and must do better than the Huckster.

sal lincoln nebraska,

What do you mean they should get paid? They do get paid, and get paid very well. I may not want to state they are overpaid because that is not up to me to judge their worth, but they are certainly not poor. I am not against wealthy people. I love rich people. I think most of them are smart and hardworking. I absolutely think good writer should able to ask for a salary rise and increase benefits INDIVIDUALLY, not as an union. I love CEO, but the idea of say…. CEOs forming an union and goes on strikes….. Ridiculous! The concept of union is for people who are so poor so weak, that they need to gather their little influence to make any effect. Hollywood writers earn $200K a year, that is a fact. They earn more than people who run around and get coffee and foods for everyone, people who fix the lightings, people who clean up the set. Do you know all of these other people have to suffer because of the writer union strike? What you are suggesting is really "Forget the guy who clean the floor at the set, let give the writer a rise." That, my friend, is what you are suggesting.

Laurinda   January 3rd, 2008 6:23 pm ET

Keith James Louttit… You have a foul mouth and I think that the CNN commentators should have removed your comment.

sal lincoln nebraska   January 3rd, 2008 5:31 pm ET

The writers arnt over payed once again,,,,If you read the news and understand anything about business and finance and you dont have a grudge against life and want everyone else to feel as badly as you do,..Then it should be clear, they should get paid

Matthew, Roanoke VA   January 3rd, 2008 4:53 pm ET

I'll bet less than 1 percent of the people know that only Letterman has struck a deal. Probably less than that care. Most of what's on TV nowadays is garbage.

Bill G   January 3rd, 2008 4:51 pm ET

What about the 75+ worker on the Jay Leno show that have been out of work since the strike have started and didn't really have a good Christmas because they had to cut their budget big time in order to save or scrape by during the holiday. While I sympathy the writers but the strike is impacting the regular workers ( who also have families) more than the head honcho at the station.

Chris, Middletown, CT   January 3rd, 2008 4:25 pm ET

Republicans are anti-union….and thats why they will have my vote every time.

See the lousy teacher in your childrens school…and see which group fights to keep even the worst teachers employed….yep….the teachers union.

Wanna see why Detroit no longer has car plants anymore…ask the UAW

Wanna see why can't compete in a global economy - ask the unions….

Your state taxes high….yep…they have creeped into the municipalities - incredible benefits for the unqualified

Remember the Post Office used to be "the only profitable wing of the government" - not anymore….unions have taken over

Democrats empower them….you make the call…lets bring back the John F Kennedy Democrat - "ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country" - instead we have the Hillary Clinton model of "ask what your country can do for you….because its free money…no need to increase taxes….wink wink.."

Fred Bronson, Los Angeles CA   January 3rd, 2008 4:09 pm ET

Richard, Ewing, NJ   January 3rd, 2008 3:22 pm ET

Good for Huckabee, and good for any candidate to corss that picklet line. You people do know there writers are very well paid, right? The average US household income is less than $50K a year. Household, not individual. The average hollywood writers income is $200K a year. More than 4 times. These writers earn more than what we consider as top professionals: doctor, lawyers, engineers, scientist. Now, I do not know about you, but when a group of writers earn more than $200K hold a picket line for more money … I will cross it. I will cross it over and over and over again, and I will congratulate anyone cross it. In this case, I like to say "Thanks Mike!"

dd   January 3rd, 2008 3:11 pm ET

I think its funny all these union nuts calling Huck a scab. They don't get that most people don't give a crap about their strike. If you don't like what you get paid, get a different job like the rest of the world. Huckabee's main supporters are actually happy if he is a scab. Unions stink and only mental midgets are terribly concerned about the lack of TV shows. Some people can still read a book. Those writers aren't on strike.

Jed in Texas   January 3rd, 2008 2:25 pm ET

Huck must have been a Walmart greeter at Walmarts World H.Q in Bentonville, Arkansas before they promoted him to Governor.Old man Clinton must have been in womens garments, lol, before they promoted him to Gov. and then on to President and Commie Chinas child labor advocate and lower prices for all spin master.I cant wait to see how the Waltons help us out this time, the great corporate citizens that they are.Maybe they can get Walmart wages down to a new low low wage of just 50 cent an hour.HEY MIKE IN DOVER you dont have to wait to hit the lotto to get a scab job ,just go down to Walmart.LMAO

Michelle, Pasadena,CA   January 3rd, 2008 2:12 pm ET

So much for the lefts "free speech" b.s. He can go on any show he wants to and is not obligated or OWNED by any union. We can always elect him as president and see if he can figure out what the meaning of "is" is. At least he is not bold face lying to the American people. Clinton.

Hypocrites! You can not speak from both sides of your mouths! Oh that's right, you're Democrats. My bad.

Casey B   January 3rd, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Fellow citizens! In 2000 + 2004, we heard a lot of similar comments about GWB. Things like: "He's so folksy", "He reminds me of me", "He's down to earth", "He is a good Christian" etc. And look where we are now. Bush may be the everyman but not everyman should be President.

This election is not a popularity contest. We should want someone who's smarter than most of us, who can represent us well with other nations, who's articulate and analytical. Huckabee is none of these things.

Richard, Ewing, NJ   January 3rd, 2008 2:03 pm ET

Lisa,

Fair Tax is not what it made up to be. It basically elimates or reduces the income tax and strengthen the sale tax. Sure, a Sale Tax will collect anyone who conduct illegal business. A drug dealer will pay his tax when he buy his foods and his gas. However, Sale tax cannot collect tax from people who BUY illegal goods. When someone BUY illegal drugs, they will not be paying any tax. So in a pure income tax system, you reward people who SELL illegal drugs. In a pure sale tax system, you reward people who BUY illegal drugs.

MRD   January 3rd, 2008 2:01 pm ET

Who cares if a liberal Hollywood writer finds "another reason not to vote for him", since he wasn't going to do so anyway? I don't blame Huckabee for being confused about the status of the strike - most of the US is too. The well paid writers want to get paid for programs on distribution channels that are losing money - fine, pay them a percentage of the profits and tell them to get back to work.

Lou   January 3rd, 2008 1:56 pm ET

Isn't a scab a worker who crosses picket lines and keeps working?

He's not a member of the writers guild or SAG.

Are the non-writers (Directors, Photographers, Stage Hands, etc..) that work
on "The Tonight Show" scabs?

Does this mean that someone who watches "The Tonight Show" during the writers strike is a scab too?

I don't like the guy, but by definition he's not a scab.

Iowa Bob   January 3rd, 2008 1:50 pm ET

The phony Huckster is playing dumb yet again. Or maybe he's not faking his ignorance and stupidity. That is even scarier.

Ian   January 3rd, 2008 1:36 pm ET

When are we going to get coverage of the writer's strike? Why would we when the people that write the news are still hard at work? ; )

Robert Bell   January 3rd, 2008 1:34 pm ET

Oh, well, I guess Huckabee loses that all-important Republican Union Vote.

Oh wait, this is 2007 and Unions can even help Democrats.

The writer's "strike" is not about wages and conditions.

It is about Intellectual Property Rights.

So you can see why so many minimum-wage workers at Wal Mart with no benefits are waiting with baited breath as to how the writer's strike turns out.

After all, if the writers win, then surely this means better wages and benefits for them, right?

Get real!

These guys are striking for the right to make hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not millions more than they already have. These are hardly poor, oppressed people working under unsavory conditions for long hours at low wages.

They are fighting for their second Porsche. And we can all identify with that struggle.

Fight on, Comrade! Workers (and writers) of the world UNTIE!

…or something like that. What a farce.

"I think President Bush is the perfect example…he personally wasn't that experienced w/foreign affairs but he knew the right people to bring in to help him. And that's why ironically it's national security and foreign policy that's been seen as his strong suit. I just hope Huckabee or whoever wins, knows as many good people as Bush did to bring on to the cabinet."……..

OMG will someone just shoot me now? "Foreign policy that's been seen as his strong suit"? Excuse me!?! Is that why we're in a war that is taking the lives of thousands of our loved ones and costing us billions of dollars. "Knows as many good people as Bush", WHAT!!?!! How many of these GOOD people of Bushes have been involved in some kind of scandel in the past 8 years? Good people my butt!

"Sure the Pres ends up making all the decisions, but I can gaurantee Huck would be plenty informed when he makes a decision with lives at stake. " Yea just like Bush was about WMD's and all that other so called intelligence info. And even if he had been informed it wouldn't have made any difference he still would have gone to war.

C'mon America wake up! If this guy get's office you can expect more of the same from him that we've been getting from that moron in office now. Do we really need another 4 years of our great Country being run completely into the ground by another self proclaimed "man of God"? And before you say it, no I am not anti-religious. I believe everyone has the right to whatever religion they believe. But Bush was also a self proclaimed "man of God" and look at where we are now.

Personally, I want change, I want a president in office who cares about the people who make up this great Nation, not about how many people came to see his sermon. I want someone who knows what's going on in this Country and in the world, and will be able to base their decision, in part at least, on their OWN knowledge of the situation and NOT by what their advisors tell them. I want a president who will fight for equality for ALL people not just for the ones who can contribute to their "causes and charities".

But I'm scr*wed because there isn't really anyone like that running, so I guess I'll have to vote for Mickey Mouse or Buggs Bunny, because either one of them would do a better job then any of the people running for office right now.

Stephen   January 3rd, 2008 12:54 pm ET

Please, Christi just goofed it up for everyone live on HLN (appx 11:15 CST). She said that Huckabee stated " I support the Unions"…. so . I bet those in the wings all get a grand guffaw of ill irk at the banter and bicker - when it's all so diluted and convoluted for those who truly are in need of answers. It will draw down to the lesser of the two evils , or puppets; depending upon our individual wishes - which are alot like wants. Good thing I have two hands, now i can have a handful of each….and they both feel the same.

Lisa   January 3rd, 2008 12:48 pm ET

The Fair Tax would begin to collect taxes from all of the people who work "under the table" which in this country is a huge part of the market. It also would collect taxes from drug dealers that are not paying taxes on their income. Do you know how much money that would bring in? Oh no - we don't want that! Lets continue to tax to death all of the honest people paying tax accountants to pay their taxes and let those who don't pay taxes continue to do so.

Chris S - Gerald, MO   January 3rd, 2008 12:21 pm ET

Neither Huckabee nor Leno were on strike, so what does it matter if he went on the show? By all appearances he didn't do much for his campaign but look uninformed anyway. The press is making much more out of this than there is. Journalists supporting the WGA cause is what I see.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   January 3rd, 2008 12:01 pm ET

I suggest that Huckabee has a mental check now, something is seriously wrong with him. He doesn't know what's going on in the world internationally as well as current affairs within the U.S. I'm not sure if a mental check is required for any of these candidates and we as Americans don't seem to care. These are questions we need to be asking especially in the lite of Huckabee's inability to respond with knowledge of current events. This is disturbing.

Harold, Seattle, Washington   January 3rd, 2008 11:47 am ET

Mr. Huckabee has a very hard time getting important, current, and relevant information in order for him to make good decisions and sound inteligent on current events. I wonder who is advising him on a daily basis and how he gets his news? For all of Bush's inability to form a coherent sentence, at least there are people behind him that I respect. Even more scary is Huckabee who can get a good sound-bite out there, but is horribly misinformed, which seems to be his style.

I want a president who can make good foreign and domestic policies. This is another reason why Huckabee won't get my vote, but I suspect that he'll end up dropping out before I get a chance here in Washington State.

Taylor Musgrave   January 3rd, 2008 11:45 am ET

It's very obvious that Huckabee is the most feared candidate by Democrats. I like how he makes Dems mad while he rapidly takes states like Florida and California in the polls.

Darth Vadik, Diamond Bar CA   January 3rd, 2008 11:41 am ET

Amazing, does this guy know anything, or does he talk to the higher power like our current president, because Bush's current bating average is .001 (with a +/- error of .002 so he could actualy be in the negatives)

A chimp throwing darts at a board would get more things right.

We dont need another Bush in the White House.

Makes you wonder, are these people actually talking to the powers above or below (the Devil, or Dick Cheney, same thing).

AJ, IC, IA   January 3rd, 2008 11:35 am ET

You call this not having a "grasp of the issues" or not having a "hold on reality?" When did fiction ever become reality? Who gives a rip! Sounds like you are the one living in la-la land! There's a little bit more to the issues of the world than what's going on in TV trivia.

Huckabee a Republican? Please he is simply without money and he is hoping his liberal friends will lend him a hand. Huckabee is playing both sides of the fence. It's funny to see all of the negative things that many of you are writing about Govenor Huckabee. Calling him all of these hateful names as if you know him personally. From someone that has actually lived in the state of Arkansas under his administration, I know he is a good and decent man. He fixed the roads in our state. Our state had a 200,000,000 dollar deficit when he came into office and he left it with a 800,000,000 dollar surplus. Out of nearly 9,000 request for clemencys and pardons,he only granted 1033 which is 10% and you want to label him as soft on crime. He fixed our school system. He's only a bum to those of you that think he can't beat the Clinton Machine which he's done his whole political career.

Can't stand the bible thumping hack, but it is telling that when I watched the 10 o'clock and 11 o'clock news last night nationally and locally this "mistake" was mentioned.

But Hillbilly makes a MAJOR error on foreign policy in regards to the CURRENT EVOLVING Pakistan elections and barely anyone REPORTED that much bigger ERROR.

I will enjoy seeing both of these Arkansas losers go down in flames, but my disgust with the liberal MSM will continue on.

S.B. Stein E.B. NJ   January 3rd, 2008 9:25 am ET

I am not sure that I agree with his choice to go on the Tonight show, but that was Huckabee's call. I like Leno, but I don't think it will hurt him. Huckabee could be a different situation; he left the state he is hoping to win; crossed a picket line of striking workers (but he is a Republican). There is a cause for some concern, but I don't know how much.

Jeremy   January 3rd, 2008 9:15 am ET

All those that appose his appearance on Leno are pathetic. Yeah for unions. The writers go on strike and put the lively-hood of thousands of others in jeopardy. Sounds quite selfish to me! As for Huckaby - He looks to be a great candidate. He has more great and new ideas than all the other Democrat/Repulican candidates combined. I completely agree with him on the IRS issue. I agree with the Fairtax. As for those that are bashing it - Why don't you go learn about it in detail before you bash it. The website is http://www.fairtax.org

FairTaxSux - you obviously know nothing about the Fairtax. Your comment that it would get rid of the middle class tells me that you know nothing about this proposal. There have been hundreds of economists and millions of dollars spent researching the Fairtax that have all come to the same conclusion - that it would be right for America.

Who in this blog would not like to take their entire paycheck home?? Then only pays taxes when they go and buy something.

This is the best opportunity we have to take this country back from the corrupt politicians that believe they know what is best with MY money.

Rich - SC   January 3rd, 2008 8:59 am ET

Huck stated "I support the writers, by the way. Unequivocally, absolutely," he said. "They're dead right on this one. And they ought to get royalties off the residuals and the long-term contracts."

Yet Huck still crossed the picket lines and ignored them like they didn't even exist. Another lie but another Radical Christian Extremist who will do anything to air time. If Huck truly respected the writers, he would have declined the interview and not crossed the picket line. End of Story. This is exactly how he will treat the American people if he is elected.

Huck better watch out, because when the strike is over, every writer who was on strike is going to blast him constantly. That was perhaps almost as dumb as Huck trying to explain how Pakistan is a problem with our immigration.

I suppose if you wave a bible in front of these stupid people, they will believe anything. How truly sad. I hope Christ can forgive them for their ignorance and stupidity and understand it must be from all those years of inbreeding. If you anyone actually cared about this Country - they would vote for the candidate they think will actually help this Country regardless of their beliefs but unfortunately to many people are just bigots.

What nerve to cross a picket line and then to top it off with a lie. I think that all the news media should join forces and tear the skeletons right out of his closet. I also feel that Jay Leno has the audacity to sit there and talk with him. He'll be getting his pink slip.

ML FL   January 3rd, 2008 8:40 am ET

Although involved with the political process approx. 30 years, I've never known an honest politician. A business associate once remarked, "you have to be a snake in the grass to be a politician." Sadly, elections have become a choice between bad apples. Surprise me, someone!

america the beautiful   January 3rd, 2008 8:28 am ET

Uh-oh! All those screenwriters who were going to vote Huckabee might swing now! Get real - who ever heard of a screenwrighter who was going to vote for Huckabee? Google any screenwrighters name and "campaign contribution" and you'll see they're all liberals - oh, pardon me, I should say "progressives".

Roy   January 3rd, 2008 8:22 am ET

Hummm Huckabee for President? I'm not gonna judge him, but going to be honest. Yes in the past you made a decisive comment regarding HIV/AIDS. That's the devil talking. And to put people with HIV/AIDS in quarantine? You are seriously stupid. And a true Christine should be more sympathetic. Yes you tried to correct yourself now, but the damage was done. How do you know if any of your family members are infected or affected? But to all the people out there, think carefully about voting for Huckabee. He will cut the Ryan White funds and for sure people will die from the virus. I personally have AIDS and have survived the virus for 20 years!!!! And going strong.

And now you playing the guitar in the public? Are you trying to make points by that? Please the people want to hear what you have to say, and not entertain us with your playing the guitar or whatever that was you was playing.

GOOD LUCK!!!!!! You are a looser Huckabee

Santosh-Phila   January 3rd, 2008 8:00 am ET

This is just reflecting the lack of money/resources in huck's campaign. Personally, he is probabaly informed or as uninformed as most of the other candidates, be it Romney, Clinton, Obama etc. But candidates raise money to pay staffers to research these kind of details ahead of time….Huck probabaly doesn't have many go-to guys he can say before an appearance, "hey, is there something I should know before I go on?….." Otherwise he's a smart guy, smart as any other candidate-if President he'd of course have the necessary staff. I think President Bush is the perfect example…he personally wasn't that experienced w/foreign affairs but he knew the right people to bring in to help him. And that's why ironically it's national security and foreign policy that's been seen as his strong suit. I just hope Huckabee or whoever wins, knows as many good people as Bush did to bring on to the cabinet.

roger, conway sc   January 3rd, 2008 7:59 am ET

Not big deal with Huck crossing the picket line he is a republican what would you expect they don't like unions look at the GOP's golden boy hero Reagan he busted them….VOTE DEMOCRATIC 08..

gene   January 3rd, 2008 7:52 am ET

I don't sse a problem
Huck is an honest man hated by the liberal Hollywood that would
not vote for him anyway.

Scott, Bangor, Maine   January 3rd, 2008 7:41 am ET

The comments on this page are mostly from misinformed communists who, rather than look at both side of an issue, would rather shout their opinion louder and see if it makes a difference. Ron Paul? In the states that have caucuses I would be surprised if he even make his 15% quota! FairTax? Go to the fairtax.org website and read some of the research that's been done. Think about all the income from illegal and undeclared sources which will be now placed into the public coffers to help with infrastructure and education. The middle class will be just fine - if anything, they would have the ability to become upper class with the pay raises corporations will be able to afford. If you log on to mikehuckabee.com and read his plan for controling illegal immigration you will find that he does not support amnesty, period. As for the writer's strike - get a grip! Think about all the people that have families to support that were unable to work because the writer's feel that they're owed more money. Now, I completely agree that they should be compensated for the work that they do, however I don't think that the families of non writing staff should be punished for this. If the show can go on despite, let it. Jeez.

Seth   January 3rd, 2008 7:39 am ET

WOW! Never before have I seen a presidential candidate talk so smooth and look so dumb. His appearance on Leno solidified a feeling I've been developing over the past few months… This man wants you to like him! He'll sell out his own principles, his own history as governor, and the smaller special interest groups just to get a vote. PLEASE don't vote for this guy. He's not genuine at all!

Terry   January 3rd, 2008 7:27 am ET

I am incensed that Gov. Huckabee would cross picket lines. I really didn't have an overwhelming feeling about him one way or the other. Is he really that clueless that he didn't know there was a strike on? Where are his people to guide him. It would have been a much better choice to appear on Letterman's show. It would have given him the same exposure, but with the *support* of the current labor action.

Oh, and when are we going to get some real coverage of the strike, anyway?

Charles R. Minick   January 3rd, 2008 7:03 am ET

It would have been interesting to hear about the interview rather than this rant about the writers strike. The media takes after Huckabee all the time-as we well know to them Christian is a dirty word.

BCNU purple state, usa   January 3rd, 2008 6:55 am ET

Pavlov's blogs! You've all been lead by the headline. Apparently Leno and Kevin Eubanks and all of the cameramen and crew crossed the picket line too!

How many people watched? Apparently they arent standing in solidarity with the writers either.

Chuck   January 3rd, 2008 6:45 am ET

Huckabee can finish job G W Bush started. Killing the Republican party.

Troy   January 3rd, 2008 6:13 am ET

Some of you folks need to do some homework and not use soundbites to make your polical decisions for you. Not everyone will agree with Mike, but don't let the media make up your mind for you.

colonelmark   January 3rd, 2008 5:39 am ET

Isn't it convenient that the only picket line for all the late-night talkers ended up being the one at which Huckabee appeared? And the MSM falls right into this setup. Incredible! And no one mentions that Mike insisted that no replacement writers be used for the show. None were used, and the writers supported Jay's return to the show, so when it all breaks down, this is just anti-Huckabee politics. Another attack point for Romney. Did you hear he's targeted Chuck Norris now? That's not smart. (Just joking…lighten up out there!)

But the real story here: Mike took the stage in a huge welcome-back audience, demonstrating once again why he's got the stuff to be president.

I'm going to enjoy the celebration tonight. Governor Huckabee takes Iowa by storm!

Craig   January 3rd, 2008 5:21 am ET

CLD January 2, 2008 10:21 pm ET

Huck sure gives a lot of "oh really?" and "I didn't know that" responses. Obviously he isn't ready for the Presidency.
———————–

Actually-considering the current administrations grasp on reality, I'd say he's right in line for succession.

Let's get this straight-he has ed rollins, the machiavelli of politicking, the religious right, the helen kellers of politicking, and he's been around for a long while. It's actually quite similar to the "shrub"-

Either he's totally clueless and folks will be attracted to that because they are, or he is acting totally clueless because he knows that people will be attracted to that because they are….it worked in 2000 and 2004.

Jer, Buffalo, NY   January 3rd, 2008 4:23 am ET

Yeah…it would be much better if he pretended to know things he does not like most other presidential candidate. We need humility in the white house.

MikeknaJ, Orange County CA   January 3rd, 2008 4:23 am ET

I enjoyed Huckabee on Leno tonight. It was a good interview and it probably helped him more than staying in Iowa for the night would've. His strength is when he can talk and engage the audience, which is why he does so well in debates, and the Leno time let him do exactly that for two segments.

Joyce Allen   January 3rd, 2008 3:47 am ET

His choice to appear on Leno says it all. Huckabee is just in this for Huckabee, His 15 minutes of fame; change we can believe in.

Ross Lippincott; Davenport Iowa.   January 3rd, 2008 2:54 am ET

I'm not a republican but if I were I'd vote Ron Paul. Huckabee is very uninformed not only on foreign policy, but also on current events.

GO OBAMA/08

denise from Canada   January 3rd, 2008 2:52 am ET

Another typical republican politician. Just as stupid as Bush. Maybe USA will be smarter this time though. If the guy can't figure out he's crossing a picket line - how can he run a country? dah

Jay Bee, USA   January 3rd, 2008 2:44 am ET

Hilarious, Huckabee keeps up the "I don' t want to look terrible by showing this attack ad, but here it is."

Now Huckabee does this? "I don't want to be a scab, but here I am."

Come everybody, pick the scab!!!!

Ron   January 3rd, 2008 2:43 am ET

He doesn't know what's going on with the writers strike, finds out, then goes on the show anyway! It's bad that he dosn't know what's going on with a strike let alone run the country! Not voting for him!!!

Mike   January 3rd, 2008 2:20 am ET

is it me or did Huckabee gain a ton of weight?

Alice Newman Center Harbor NH   January 3rd, 2008 2:16 am ET

"But my understanding is there's a sort of dispensation given to the late-night shows, is that right?"

Told again that he was wrong, Huckabee murmured, "Hmmm," and, "Oh," before answering another question.

… the same answer he gave to learning about Iran and their defunct nuclear weapons program and martial law in Pakistan. Where is his staff? He should be watching the news on TV in the Holiday Inn rather than shooting pheasants named after his top three rivals …

Ignorance can be cured but stupidity goes on forever.

Bob, Florida   January 3rd, 2008 2:15 am ET

Mike Huckabee on Jay Leno,

January 2nd:

…. “I have a great respect for Barack Obama . I think he's a person who is trying to do in many ways what I hope I'm trying to do and that is to say let's quit what I call 'horizontal politics.' Everything in this country is not left, right, liberal, conservative, Democrat, Republican. I think the country is looking for somebody who is vertical, who is thinking, 'Let's take America up and not down,' and people will forgive you for being left or right if you go up."

No mention of this in the CNN article covering Huckabee's appearance on Jay Leno!!

Nick   January 3rd, 2008 2:03 am ET

What an idiot…the guy never thinks about his decisions until after he gets mud all over his face. The worst part is that there are still a few people left that actually think that we can have a fool like this in the white house and remain the global super power. Not with my vote

KEITH JAMES LOUTTIT   January 3rd, 2008 1:59 am ET

Huck is a scumbag scab.

Again he shows that he doesn't know what is going on, and he still crosses the line even after saying: "I support the writers, by the way. Unequivocally, absolutely," he said. "They're dead right on this one. And they ought to get royalties off the residuals and the long-term contracts."

WalterC   January 3rd, 2008 1:48 am ET

Excellent Job by Mike Huckabee! Shows why he is connecting with so many everyday Americans. Very good decision. He not only reached more in Iowa by doing this, but he also reaches a national audience and gains ground in the states to come.

Bob, Florida   January 3rd, 2008 1:45 am ET

Of the Democratic candidates, Huckabee says there is one with whom he has something in common — Obama. "I think they're all sincere. I think there's a fundamental difference between us in terms of whether we think taxes ought to go up or down, whether government ought to be more or less involved. Look, I have respect for anybody that runs for president.

I have a great respect for Barack Obama.

Vote Obama '08!

Would Jesus cross a picket line? Is that seriously their point?

Richard K, Auburndale, FL   January 3rd, 2008 12:57 am ET

Huckabee will say whatever is good for the moment.

His website says he opposes and will never allow amnesty.

Then he states on Face the Nation he wants everybody in the country to be legal, amnesty for all illegals.

What a liar. Huckabee is a scumbag!

Wade   January 3rd, 2008 12:56 am ET

Hucabee is always crossing the line.

Hillary is so programed now she is a robot, scary.

Did Hillary know Bill was going to lie to a senate Committee she claims to have been in the know at all times.

Did Bill play with her on the phone to or just the young girls??
Lets not get another embarrassing episode of the Ckintons again the world is too dangerous and the Clintons are wreckless and oblivous to it.

Mitt Romeny is tried tested and true and I like the fact he is so passionte about America.

Why do so many women love Mitt Romney? But they do.

Eric   January 3rd, 2008 12:54 am ET

Man, Huckabee hit his appearance on the tonight show out of the park; a HOME RUN!! He is easy to listen to. Not that Jay really grilled him. That Fair Tax is something I have not heard the media report on. Thanks to Jay for bringing that up in the interview.

The main thing I keep hearing the media bring up is his faith. What are they scared of? That he will think with his head and heart rather than parts of the body below his belt. Having a leader of strong moral track record would serve our nation well.

Secular humanist vote their faith/values and govern promoting their positions in the marketplace of ideas. Why the demand that Christians mute there voices in the marketplace of ideas. Thanks to the people of faith (not all people of faith) that took leadership regarding slavery / civil rights, poverty, etc..

America is not a theocracy - for any one faith Christian, Muslim, Secular Humanist, etc. We all should be respectful and not intolerant when others share their values in the marketplace of ideas. It is in that marketplace that Americans can all connect as one - in understanding rather that left/right, democrat/republican, we/they.

Gas clerks… Strip off the franchise woes and Strike until the highways are bare.

He's perfect, GOP voters respond very well to stupid. I wonder if he is dumb enough to get 2 terms, or if he is just one term's worth of ignorant. Only history can tell. Or Mr. Murdoch.

Ben, Lonoke, AR   January 3rd, 2008 12:44 am ET

Huckabee nailed it. If he doesn't get the nod in Iowa it will only serve to prove that elections are bought these days.

Daniel   January 3rd, 2008 12:40 am ET

One wonders if the good Governor’s 'other cheek' gets as much a workout as the far side of his mouth.

chris, San Diego   January 3rd, 2008 12:37 am ET

Does this guy know anything about anything, really? I'm glad he knows all the books in the bible, I mean I love Jesus and go to church, but am I supposed to vote for him because of that and because he's "affable", this is ridiculous.

Dale Davis, Glendora, California   January 3rd, 2008 12:37 am ET

How pathetic. Meanwhile, America is on the cusp of a real economic crisis, as was indicated by the stock market today. And Americans are supposed to be lulled away to thinking a country bumpkin with a dimpled Gomer Pyle grin and a divinity degree will save us from meltdown with kitchy quips and "genuineness"?
Please America. You can't be this dumb again can you? The South has not had a very good track record for putting out good leadership in the Republican camp. The Hillary campaign will slaughter Huckabee if he gets the nod. It has been a known fact in close circles that Romney is the most feared by the Clinton Machine.

Doug Halvorsen   January 3rd, 2008 12:36 am ET

Huck again doesn't seem to know what is going on in this world, whether about the N.I.E., Pakistan, or domestic issues. The more he talks the more he demonstrates he is not ready for prime time.

JG   January 3rd, 2008 12:33 am ET

Bad Move Gomer Pyle. While I respect Chuck, his endoresment of you means nothing to the american people. After this stunt if Chuck continues to endorse you I will demote him from a black belt to a yellow belt!

MARY   January 3rd, 2008 12:32 am ET

You seemed comfortable and I enjoyed your personality. I think your real. Thanks for giving us hope.

Gator   January 3rd, 2008 12:20 am ET

Is he kidding?? I am a Democrat and praying that this man gets the nomination. He is incredibly likable… as long as you know nothing about him. Truly, he could not be a bigger p.r. disaster. I know some people blame his organzation for being under-funded, but shouldn't the future President at least know that (a) Pakistan is not the second-biggest source of immigrants to the US; (b) people with AIDS don't need a quarantine; (c) it makes no sense to call a press conference and pledge no attack ads, then show an attack ad… I'm getting tired just typing all his gaffes. I hope he coasts to the nomination, because there isn't a Democrat in the field who couldn't beat him once his true record is shown.

After spending $ 50 million Romney is languishing in 4th place nationally barely 4 points above Thompson. He is sliding everywhere but take a look at his slide in his original home state where is father was a popular govenor, Michigan. He now has a 2 point lead.

The Big story tomorrow is how Romney outspent everyone and ended up with nothing. His idiotic statements about Huckabee are an example of a guy that is not ready for primetime. Then neither is Huckabee. By default this election is going to McCain the only one that can be trusted not to make a total jerk of himself.

Romney says that he won't embarass us in the Whitehouse.

He already has with his trivialization of the political process.

I am Willard Romney and I approve/disapprove this message depending on how it will effect your vote

The Oppressor   January 2nd, 2008 11:36 pm ET

Hahahaha….Fair Tax? Is any Tax really fair? Not by that old outdated document called The Constitution. The Fair(lol) tax is a flat tax…that hits the low income the hardest…

It's pretty funny that he crossed the picket lines but said he "supports" the writers…very funny indeed…Huckster is the master of answering all questions with both a "yes" and a "no"….there must be something in the water in Hope that produces such skilled double talking.

Guy   January 2nd, 2008 11:34 pm ET

How clueless is this guy? Can America afford another out of touch, uninformed president?

AMERICA: WE NEED TO ELECT A SMART PERSON AS PRESIDENT

Huck is the dumbest of the whole crop.

arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh! is this guy really that clueless? he doesn't know what is going on outside the united states, he doesn't have a clue what is going on in the united states, how could anybody be so uninformed?. By the way crossing the picket line ISN'T showing your support for the writers it puts your support somewhere else. Granted he may really not have known when he booked, but he definately knew when he decided to continue and go on the show. This guy needs to stop playing HALO and actually read some news!

Amanda Stevenson   January 2nd, 2008 11:05 pm ET

Huckabee should consider a career in stand-up as Arkansas won't take him back!

After he released OVER ONE THOUSAND criminals without any legal education and poor decision making!!

In Arkansas Mike's decisions could not hurt us much, but if he were to lead our nation, no one knows the impact!

I recall the embarrasment when President did the same during his last days as President….he owed people favors and he set criminals free to settle the score!

I don't think Mike is funny…..I don't think he could lead our nation…..we will never know of course. If Huckabee wins nomination, it will be Clinton/Obama 2008.

Ajay Jain, Garland, TX   January 2nd, 2008 10:58 pm ET
