Obama continues to face questions based on internet rumors

(CNN) — As he made a last-minute push for votes in Des Moines, Barack Obama was still finding Iowans curious about e-mailed rumors about his religion – or, for one voter, his alleged lack of one.

Zanata Moore-El asked Obama if he was an atheist.

"I'm a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ," Obama said. "Don't read e-mails."

Obama is a Christian, but e-mails speculating on his religious views, including his Muslim heritage, are still circulating despite being discredited.

"I hated having to ask him that," Moore-El told a reporter. "But I heard he was like an atheist. I don't want a president who's an atheist. I'm a firm believer in God. I just really wanted to make sure because I really wanted to vote for him and he has some good topics and everything."

If you want to be shocked,go to the Trinity Church of Christs ,(Obama's church) web site. You will find among other disturbing things that his pastor gave Louis Farrachan a life time achevement award for his service to America. Farrachan for you that don't know is a known racist and anti -semite . http://www.tucc.org

America, you better wise up! Barack Hussein Obama certainly could be a Muslim imposture posing as an American Christian! If he is, he will be the very one to take Christian Broadcasting off the air waves! He claims to be a Christian from the "Church of Christ," but has openly admited he believes, same sex marriage should be decided by each state. That is condoning it and asssures him the gay votes! Abortion issue form Hussein Obama, "it should be up to the individual,"
that secures him votes from the pro-choice supporters! If he were a Christian and followed God's word, he would never condone either of them and openly admit he is against both! I know people from the Church of Christ, and they would never support either issue, and would openly say so!

One of you mentioned his mom was a Christian, that is nothing further than the
truth! I understand his mother was a white Aheist, yes… his mother is white which
makes Hussein Obama half white, he is as much white as he is black! The other half is Muslim, his dad and step dad were Muslim! America can co-exist with any other religion in the world but the Muslim religion! Why? Because Muslim are
instructed by their bible the Koran/Quran to inillate infadels which means ALL who are non-Muslim should be killed! THAT IS THEIR SOUL PURPOSE IN LIFE! You have no choices as a Muslim, their soul purpose is to take the world over and everyone can only be Muslim! They are trying to accomplish what Hitler was trying to do, he wanted a perfect race of only blonde hair and blue eye's and wanted power over the world! I can not believe you want to vote someone in as Commander and Chief that is from a Muslim back ground. Our women and men have died and are dying by the hands of Muslim! He has nothing to loose by not
putting on the charm and promising change… what change? I will admit Obama is charming but he has told us nothing nothing except "America is ready for Change" none of the cadidates are telling us any plans for the willl of the Americans, we need a plan for luring industry back to America, only Fred Thompson has said he intends to get back to the Constitution! He also said he is going to work on foreign trade to get jobs back into this country. We have swayed so far from the Constitution, it has always worked for America but is being ignored and it shows! What is a country without instructions? We use them everyday in our jobs and at home, why not run America by them like we have before, if you do not like the way our way of life is in America and you left your own country to come live here, go back no one is stopping you!

America is in deep trouble if we do not get back to the basics! Why do you think everyone wants to live in America? We were organized and followed the Constitution! A country that has no rules or laws and limitations or consequences to abide by will certainly self destruct!

God has been the Commander and Chief in America, the more we exclude him the worse our country is getting! God has been our sourse of strength in this great nation, man alone can not direct this country, 9/11 and Katrina are just the beginning of the coming attractions if we keep oliminating him from our Nation!

God Bless America!

Gane   January 7th, 2008 9:34 am ET

Senator Edwards, I would NOT vote for you because you are making your case only on of the expense of Hilary Clinton.

Gentleman?! What is it? On the debate you ware like a Hyena over her, before her suit… Is that a simple jealousy lire most of American women (surprise for me, even Pakistanis are more advance in this meter and Bhutto was killed from her enemies).

Second, do you deny that "Clinton's machine" work peaty well for americans for 8 years ?

It is partly your fault. Why didn't you win the Election in 2000? Now you are blaming Hilary that America is really in a big …

You still play your ego agenda, Sur! Hussein Obama will be chewed and spit from Republicans, because he has not very much to offer then word "Change" (He sounds to me like those communist leaders who had been feeding the people only with nice word and hopes of future almost heavenly life; UTOPIA, eh , worked for some period).

Americans , please, just do not compare him with JFK.

If you really are talking from your heard, it is not late you to make some REAL CHANGE- make sure Democrat to be in the Oval office this time even that is not you.

As I rite on a CNN goes a Braking New about Iranians? I imagine Senator Hussein Obama in the Oval office with pence full of..

Wake up Americans, it is very serious , do not blow it again!

Rich   January 7th, 2008 1:48 am ET

I can't quite fathom why so many appear to be willing to follow the philosophy of Bush/Cheney and their followers. Perhaps most commenting are making hundreds of thousands per year.

I keep hearing the fear that democrats will tax and spend. Don't you realize that dollar fatigue is reducing our standard of living. Everything we own in this country is 30-40% less than it was since 2001. Why is this so? Because this administration and the republicans who rubber stamp borrow and spend. Their tax is in the form of borrowing and their spending has been mainly for a war of choice in Iraq.

When reading Obama is told to become a second Martin Luther King, having success and getting in touch with the hearts of an american people`s majority,I am very afraid : I fear the ultra conservative reaction, the answer of racism,i am afraid of Obama himself.I hope he will have a lot of security during the elections.
Hope, nobody will shoot him ! God bless him !

I look forward to have a man such as Obama. There is time for a change and he is going to down in history as the first black president. I think that a lot of white people do not want to see this happen. People would say silly things about a man that has an outstanding back ground. Give him the chance and give him a fair race. When it is all said and done, we the people do not count any way, that is why Bush is in office. Our votes did not count, who we as peolpe rather have as president. I pray that the best man win, I feel that man is Obama. God is with every body rather they believe or not. God loves all and service all no matter what and he already knows who the next president will be. May God bless who ever that is.

Karen, Sal and Charles:

Have you ever been to the United Church of Christ? Please try it sometime and open your mind. As one of the many white people who attend that congregation, I can assure you it is far from racist. It is really sad that I have to point that out to counter your attempts to score political points. It only confirms the need to keep religion and politics separate.

"Black Value System"?

Even though the Muslims forced their religion on the Africans for centuries and enslaved the darker races, I would rather have an Allah fearing Muslim in office than a racist…..equality for all! Obama should leave his church behind and embrace a more open minded congregation.

Matt   January 3rd, 2008 10:33 pm ET

It makes me laugh to actually read people stating, and actually believing, that Obama A) is Muslim, B) doesn't respect the flag, and C) actually hates America. I think that's a whole lotta work to put in to take a job for a country you actually hate. It's probably a good thing CNN doesn't require an I.Q. test before you can post. I'd truly miss reading what the whackos will say next! Sorry, but it's time to start your crying. W. is almost out, and your time is up. He's the one that truly hates America, and is doing what he can to spit on our great constitution and turn this into a police state.

Bye bye, Bushie.

O8ama!

He just won Iowa handily, New Hampshire is next!

Hypocrisy   January 3rd, 2008 10:30 pm ET

1) General
Amazing how many comments there are (violent unstructured debate). At this rate humans will always be stupid, gullible gossiping beings. And society will continue shoving prejudices down the throats of children.
At least here in the primary chaotic ol' mixin' pot, the United States (no, not America – ever thought of the fact that the term 'America' applies to continents, not the U.S.? Citizens of Mexico and Canada are Americans as well…).

2) The U.S. Public and Religion, etc
Hey, guess what – Bush – a Christian. OMG! He is so morally upright, huh! One of the most despised leaders in the world, impressive! … I might as well give the hell up. The simple fact that W. was elected not once but TWICE is absolutely typical of the stupidity(?) of the U.S. public (individuals are smart, but generally as a group common sense and IQ take a SEVERE blow to the head unfortunately)..
And the 90's Clinton was impeached for having a healthy sexual appetite [which is apparently unforgivable and immoral, somehow reminds me of the retarded celebrity spotlight...]. I think Nixon's offense was a bit more severe… But Bush W.'s have by far been the most horrible.
And of course, Obama is racist (sarcasm) because his church excludes whites. But Christian churches don't let in non-Christians! (wait wait, I'm getting race and religion mixed up again). How does this church possibly survive!

3) Hypocrisy
Major hypocrisy (or stupidity(?)) here in the U.S., I tell ya. Politicians are really good at it.
I'm trying not to vote for a hypocrite. I will not vote for Clinton because I do not want two families ruling the U.S. for… how many years now? She seems like a hypocrite also. But Obama, by going against the standard stupidity and having courage, has my vote. Far more importantly, however, he seems independent and intelligent, and I like his policy options. It's amazing that he's made it this far.

4) Side-note
"Einstein's work was interrupted by World War I. A lifelong pacifist, he was only one of four intellectuals in Germany to sign a manifesto opposing Germany's entry into war. Disgusted, he called nationalism 'the measles of mankind.' He would write, 'At such a time as this, one realizes what a sorry species of animal one belongs to.'"
Please, please, stop the Hitlerism! Use your head, stop being told what to believe! Stop being blind!

4) Ethics?
By the way, a person can be friendly, courageous and helpful, etc (what is 'moral' or 'ethical' anyways? There are a thousand ways to interpret everything) and an overall good person no matter what they believe in.

What does it matter, as long as our president looks good on TV!
Will we ever have a president like FDR again?

5) The Point
Vote for the odd humanist president, one that will verify claims and not go into unprovoked war.

Dave Haley   January 3rd, 2008 10:27 pm ET

How can some Christians believe that Muslims are atheists? Those that do are deluded to believe that Barack's grandfather's faith somehow translates into a fact that Barack is an athiest. Ignorance like this perverts the electoral process.

phyllis   January 3rd, 2008 10:24 pm ET

It amazes me how this is supposed to be a land of the free with freedom of religion. As a Christian I am embarassed that this freedom only applies to other Christians and not to all religions as our forefathers meant it to be. It is time we look past someone's religious convictions to how they actually can handle the issues and make decisions that affect this country. It is almost gotten to the point that Christianity is becoming a theocratical society. That is why I focus on God above and not men as men have ruined religion in this country.

I hope Mr. Moore-El knows that being an atheist doesn't mean he rejects only the existence of "God" as described in the Bible. "Atheism" entails a belief that no spiritual or supernatural entities exist at all. It doesn't only apply to God… =/

In my opinion, religion has only hindered this country's potential…

Lois Green   January 3rd, 2008 9:12 pm ET

Hi, why does religion have to be an issue, that should be as personal as an abortion. I almost bled to death when I was young, because I was new in a community and when I started to miscarry they had to have proof of human tissue before they would do a D and C and save my life. I was labeled when I knew nothing about the questions they were asking me to see if I had harmed myself. I was just a little farm girl that wanted to start a family.
This is like religion with the labeling, you can pray to the corn crop or the moon if you are a caring good neighbor that love his country, his family and his fellow man and contributes to all above.
Lets all get together and make this country safe and happy again. Does anyone remember the GOLDEN RULE.
DO UNTO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD HAVE THEM DO UNTO YOU!

This next Presidential election…the next President…will determine the rise or fall of the United States as a global influence and a world economic power. The standard of living of all American's dependsupon this next President. Whether he/she will focus on education or war, health care or economy, oil or poverty. My take is to stay with who you know and know well. Bill Clinton was able to effect a noticable difference in he lives of American's…Hillary will do even better. In my opinion, this election will be the most important Presidental election in American history. Obama does not seem to be as open as he would like himself to appear.

Joseph   January 3rd, 2008 8:46 pm ET

It would be easier to believe if he actually was a Christian…but at least he's a church member…

Ms. C Johnson   January 3rd, 2008 8:46 pm ET

I have atted Brak Obama's church in Chicago, it is a beautiful service, the pastor is a God fearing man and calls you to the alter to except Christ as your Savior, which then makes you a christian, if you do so, and you repeat after him, thou shall be saved. Don't make such a big thing out of it, if you love the Lord, you to can become a christian.. Brack and Michelle are both christians, and if you bring a child the way it should go, she/he will not depart from you. That is God's word. So stop bickering over his religion and VOTE.

Jack   January 3rd, 2008 8:42 pm ET

"I don't want a president who's an atheist!"

Yeah. Who needs intelligence in the White House?

Reno   January 3rd, 2008 8:41 pm ET

In my opinion, he's a scary guy. I'm not so concerned about what we DO know about him – it's what we don't know that's scary. We can't afford to wait until inauguration day to find out.

james   January 3rd, 2008 8:41 pm ET

Let's be straight:

I don't know Zanata Moore-El and don't want to. I was recently asked if I am an atheist by someone who abviously doesn't know me. All I said was, "I am not afraid of God." I pray and meditate morning, noon and night. Contempt prior to investigation is dangerous. Remember God created man; man didn't create God, but some seem to think so. Look within.

But, I will vote for anything the Democrats put up this time because I cannot stand to even think that oxygen continues to be sucked by Bush. He's a waste and one of the worst criminalistic people in history to ever hold such a proud office. One definite thing Bush and Cheney have done for me — made me decide to vote Democrat this time… no matter what!!

He knows very well that it is impossible to get elected as an atheist.

D. Gerber   January 3rd, 2008 8:37 pm ET

Obama's religion or lack of freligion is his business, and his business alone. When religion becomes the acid test for whom we trust to be the president of this
country, we are in serious trouble. Let's elect a president on the merits of his or her ideas about improving the human community and keeping us at peace. Faith isn't necessary to have ideas about this goals.

Jeff in Plainfield, IL   January 3rd, 2008 8:31 pm ET

Wow…wake up people, and stop being so afraid of the truth. We're not going to punish you for admitting you were mistaken. To persist in believing disproven lies is ridiculous.

Please check the below questions to determine whether you are a lies-believing, truth-hating, false-Christian, Neocon, Anti-Conservative Fascist. If you answer yes, you probably also STILL believe Barak Obama is a Muslim.

Did you believe W when he told you Mission Accomplished?
Did you believe the story about the Yellowcake Uranium?
After it was known to be completely false?
Did you believe the Republicans are still the Fiscal Conservative Party?
Even after the past 30 years of disproving it?
Even though it is well-known to be false?
Do you believe George W. Bush has been sober for years?
Even though any expert on addiction will tell you he is obviously drinking and doing coke?
Did/Do you believe Iraq participated in the 9/11 attacks, even though it is well known they did not?
Do you believe de-stabilizing Iraq, costing thousands of lives, hundreds of billions of dollars, increasing terrorist recruitment, using radioactive weapons (DU) and chemical warfare (Fallujah – WP), running record deficits, rivaling even George H.W. Bush and Ronald Reagan were all good ideas, and in the best interests of our nation?

Michael   January 3rd, 2008 8:30 pm ET

I have an idea;

Instead of having these candidates try to woo us with lipservice and empty promises (Wake up people, do you seriously believe everything they tell us?), let's have each of them sit down in front of a computer and watch them play SimCity4. If they can successfully build and manage a city, then they might have the skills to run a country…

I wonder how many of them would make the grade…

I would be concerned, also, if I were him.

Kenya was one of the most stable African countries, and this is an important point.

I am hoping Hillary will win the Democratic nomination. But I will vote as a Democrat no matter who it is because I believe in the party's platform.

I have seen these same comments on various blogs. I try to express that these folks are passing on rumors.

I can't believe people are not thinking for themselves and doing their research. The internet has alot of info about Obama's life, so there is no excuse to make stuff up (of course, people make it up intentionally–small minded, self-centered, mean-spirted people).

Randa   January 3rd, 2008 8:26 pm ET

To everyone making the following comment or similar–
"Obama has NO respect for the flag, his hands were resting on his crotch while the national anthem were played. How do you think our men and women in uniform would react? A lot of you never think of that."

YOU ARE NOT EXPECTED TO PUT YOUR HAND ON YOUR HEART FOR THE NATIONAL ANTHEM! You do it for the PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE– just like we all learned in grade school. The picture floating around showing Obama without his hand on his heart is pure slander. The other candidates in the pic were wrong and I wonder if it was a calculated set up by them.

Phil From Kansas City, MO   January 3rd, 2008 8:26 pm ET

I'm done watching your cable news program etc. For this company to report on this on the day Iowans make a choice that would affect them for the next 4 years, you people come up with this lame story? You people are as wrong as Faux News. I gave you people much respect when you corrected fox news and now this? Its clear to see that you support Clinton and its clear to see that CNN is racist and I stick by that. Don't post my comment I don't care, but I know someone from this news organization will read this. You post this story then you didn't report on the figures The Register posted on they're site. I still can't believe that Voters have NOT woken up yet. Living in Newk York, I assure you that Clinton's supporters ARE all from down state where all the big money is. Even her record as Senator stinks. She IS NOT for the American people. What she says and what she will do is night and day. I favored Obama at first ! But after Oprah campaigned for Obama just turned me off. Keep big money people out of campaigns. After that, Oprah produced a movie called "The Debator". After seeing it, it surprised me how much simularity there was between Denzel Washington who played the debator and Obama him self. OK he can talk the talk ! Biggest turn off when he said we need to change the world. America should be first. Next, John Edwards, is the man. I have met him three times during his last campaign. He talks straight from the heart and no Empty Words. I can remember back in the days. When you shook hands that meant a promise. We NEED a leader to fix our country first. We have helped the world for a long time. And they will need more help in the future. At least John is out right for the hard working middle class and poor. John WILL walk the walk, not just talk !! It amazes me that the Democratic Party accepted John Edwards for Vice President. Then shunned him after the loss! They are looking for a Player NOT a DOER !!! Hasn't any voter out there learned yet ? We were given a lot of empty promises to elect a new Congress and Senate. What have they done for the citizens to date ? After that is when I decided NOT to have a party label. American First !!

Jaik , chicago, IL   January 3rd, 2008 8:22 pm ET

I am SO sick of everyone on these blogs accusing CNN of being sided towards Clinton…Think of the country during the 90's… we had record employment, low inflation, record home sales, gas at less than a dollar a gallon– and to think, that's the last time we had a CLINTON in office!

Hey! MB! A whole lot of us are SICK of the Clintons taking credit for the hard work of the people back in the 90s. Now Her Royal Thighness thinks by her mere presence in the WH, it all comes back again. Yeah, like she said oil prices would drop immediately if she is elected. How fricking delusional is that? Name 3 things Slick did for the economy in the 90s? Low interest rates? Uh, the fed controls that. Low gas prices? Gee, did Slick set the price? Uh, no, that's called the market (like now when it's up). Low employment? Gee, I thought COMPANIES hired people.

These 3 reasons contributed to what happened in the 90s …. Y …. 2 ….. K. Remember that? When companies were hiring people like crazy to "fix" the Y2K issue. Buying all new computers, upgrading infrastructure, modems, routers, etc. Dell, Microsft, Cisco, Intel, going bonkers, the markets skyrocketing. People had money from that great market run so they bought and bought and bought stuff everywhere! This produced more jobs and it all dove-tailed together. Then March, 2000 ……. KEEERRRRAASH! Markets plummet. And not a thing Slick could do about it, could he? How many reading this still hold tech stocks "hoping" they'll come back? How many knew techies or others that got laid off in 2000? You remember. That led to the mini-recession that Bush inherited in 2001, and then 9/11 happened and our country's economy was hit bad. BUT, we recovered. And, ya know, Bush doesn't take credit for it cuz it's all market cycles.

So Her Royal Thighness should just shutup about "Back to the Future", cuz her rutting pig of a husband had nuthin' to do but get outta the way back then, which left him plenty of time to chase skirts. Now THAT he was very good at!

I agree with Joe, SoCal – I have had CNN's page as my homepage for years – until tonight. I would encourage anyone offended by this type of journalism to change too.

CNN should seriously consider editing their "editors". It's not news – it's an attempt to increase readership. Look at the comments CNN – it's certainly not brought out the best and brightest. You get what you sew. And comments from "GOD" and "HILLARY" are what's wrong with your website.

I doubt seriously if anyone at CNN.com actually reads CNN.com though – or the spelling and grammar might be a tad better.

Sorry, but the man goes to a church the preaches against white people, similar in ways that Muslims teach against Christians.

The man has his roots with Muslims, he only started going to church when he entered politics.

Come on people, wake up, read about the man, niot rumors, and you willl find the rumors are flowers compared to what he really is about.

I do not trust him, I do not knwo anyone that does. I feel the media has elevated him, because I do not see where the people of our great country can be fooled by him.

His agenda is clear, he does not like America, he will not recite the pledge of allegiance, he conitnually bashes our country and attends a church that preaches against white people, so why in the world would anyone want someone like that as president?

steve baughman   January 3rd, 2008 8:18 pm ET

Atheists, the last minority group against whom open discrimination is not only tolerated, but encouraged. Why someone should be prejudiced against a candidate who promises to rely on their own best judgement in making decisions, instead of listening for voices from above, is just that, prejudiced.

It is time for atheists, and there are many of us, to stand up and speak out against the view that we are unsuited for public leadership.

OK, this is like the hundreth time I've tried to make a post and CNN NEVER posts my posts! I guess people who support Hillary aren't allowed to make posts. We need to remember what life was like the last time a Clinton was in office. Remember? Record employment figures, little inflation, a robust stock market, 95 cent a gallon gas, huge buget surpluses and a reduced national debt. A Clinton– specifically Hillary Clinton–can do the job, not Barack Hussein Obama!

Mike   January 3rd, 2008 8:13 pm ET

I would like to know the answer to this however it is not so important. However I would never vote for a Muslim.

It is not really a big importance but the public has a right to know as much as possible about the most powerful leader in the world. To those that say I am racist I suggest racism in indeed at play here. Why else has Oprah rallied behind him? And this type of support detrimental to a good person like Mr. Obama.

Again my view is that the Muslim religion is really an enemy of America. So we should know the answer to this.

Joe, SoCal   January 3rd, 2008 8:10 pm ET

Count me in as someone who will no longer read CNN. It has been bad enough, but to to run this blurb hours before caucus time seals the deal. CNN as much journalistic integrity as the National Enquirer.

California voter   January 3rd, 2008 8:10 pm ET

I, like some of the folks who have commented earlier on Obama's religion, am more concerned about the church (Trinity United Church of Christ) that Obama is a member of . It certainly comes off as a racist church to me if you visit the website. I don't think we want a President that's a member of a racist group, even if it is a church.

Soldier, Chicago, Illinois   January 3rd, 2008 8:10 pm ET

I'm an active duty soldier in the army. When I'm in civilian clothes, I bow my head and place myhands clasped in front. Am I unpatriotic? Go ahead. Accuse me like you accused Obama. You people are willing to do ANYTHING to spread hateful garbage about him just because he scares Clinton supporters. You're all sick. You're all also the reason that, as a lifelong Democrat, I will vote Republican for the first time if you nominate Hillary Clinton as the nominee. She's not fit for the office- she has no real experience and is in it for the prestige of being the first woman president. She's full of ambition and shallow on policy experience.

Obama is right for our time. Send someone this time that is capable. Vote for Barack Obama.

are people still buying into these ridiculous rumors about Obama?
as a country, we've seen what happens when voters remain uninformed: we end up with 8 years of reckless alcoholic "leadership" in the White House.
personally, i'm not interested in Obama's religion.
but i am interested in the fact that he's whip smart and would make one of the finest US president's this country has seen in ages.
voters should remind themselves that we've gotten used to one of the most unexceptional human beings in the White House.
a smart, forward-thinking president is going to be a shock to many of us who have made the choice not to get educated, travel, or step outside our myopic short-sighted world.
we have lowered the bar and dumbed down this country by electing George W. Bush.
allow a progressive intelligent person to lead us. we'll all be better off for it.

"I'm a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ," Obama said. "Don't read e-mails."

To quote our pastor, "Sitting in church no more makes you a Christian than sitting in your garage makes you a car." Just because he is a member of a church doesn't mean he's a Christian–it's the actions, not the words that determine if one is a true Christian.

Everyone realizes religion is a complete joke by now right, i mean its 2008. I mean i guess we can take the word of peasants from thousands of years ago who had nothing better to do than embellish stories or we could just be normal. Or we could believe the word of common thiefs who go up into caves and get high and then come back down and claim they talked to a prophet. Im sorry you people are so dumb its scary.

Let me see… Christianity embraced the genocide of the American Indians, the most horrendous crime of humanity, slavery, child molestation, discrimination of women and non christians, adultery, war, and so many other crimes thoughout world history. Yup, I want that type of religious person running this country.

The reason why this country is in the current state is because of all the idiots who do not read, research and understand the principles of these politicians. Can anybody tell me what legislation's their favorite politicians began or had enacted into law? What groups support them and what votes did they submit according to the lobby groups interest? What votes did they vote nay on and why? Where they stand on issues that concern you as a citizen?

To karen and Charles: My father is white and happens to lead a major regional network of United Church of Christ Churches. So much for being racist, anti-white, right? You are clearly using the internet to slander a legimate candidate who truly wants to do what's best for his country. Pitiful.

Bevan , Mati, sodapop s.e.mo and Les:

Religion allows people en masse to believe what only a delusional lunatic could believe in isolation.

Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.

I don't base my vote on a candidate's religion, and I'm an honest, principled and moral person despite being an atheist leaning agnostic with a nuance of Buddhism thrown in for peace and temperance of spirit.

Atheists are not blowing up buildings or innocent people in the name of thier god. Or stopping people from getting birth control. Or standing in the way of promising stem-cell research. Or stopping every person from getting the same in unalienable rights. Religion (if you want to claim it) is about discussion and tolerance, not violence and bigotry. How are those equal?!

Peace to your tortured souls …

'Tax and Spend' politicians like Clinton, Obama, and Edwards, yaking and smiling, and this is all they 'CAN' do, makes Taxpayers wonder what their real agenda is? I don't know about you, but the 'election' mess started months too early. Money being spent like it grows in the backyard ready for plucking, but yet America is trillions of dollars in debt and counting, due to these 'Tax & Spend' Politicians. Taxpayers are fed up with furnishing bodyguards, cars, buses, and airplanes for the 'candidates'! Taxpayers feel the money 'backing' the politicians is very dirty, since America is being bought and sold every day to the highest bidder! EVER WONDER HOW THIS HAPPENED ON AMERICAN SOIL? 'Taxpayers can't believe anyone would vote for these kind of people. They're definitety not credible and if they truly believed in God, they'd stop handing out Taxpayers money, just to get elected. They'd stop the illegitimates from having more illegitimates, instead of government handouts, social programs and trying to start a health care program for people who don't work, never worked, and never created anything to benefit America, but more illegitimates hanging in public schools and on street corners 'creating terrorism on American soil!'
Instead of 'getting your picture made with this bunch of what most common sense, hard-working Taxpayers feel are useless to society", you need to start thinking about the future of your children and your grandchildren and how you, as a Taxpayer, will be able to afford Good Christian Schools as the public schools are not the answer to America's future!
I used to vote for the man, not the party, until I truly saw how much money some politicians spent on useless programs that's bankrupting America.
As for Obama – I know that he has no respect for the flag as his hands, the whole time, were folded in front of him, while the national anthem was played. I do hope our men and women in uniform saw this action! Most of you know that Obama is a MUSLIM but converted to christianity because it was best for him. THINK! This is not to the best interest of America!
Think about how many more jobs will be leaving America if this bunch gets in.
I, along with 99.9% of Taxpayers, want to see a President, who has common sense, who believes in God and the welfare of America, who has run a 'PRIVATE BUSINESS' with 'PRIVATE MONEY' not 'INCENTIVE RUN COMPANIES'! It 's obvious, the 'Incentives or the people running companies taking Taxpayers' money', are a bunch of losers!
Government cannot continue to 'take' from the working man and give to people who won't work, lie around and have more illegitimates, and live off Taxpayers' money! If Clinton, Edwards and Obama is elected to anything, including washing dishes at the local pub, then America is doomed.

Taxpayers are tired of hearing the 'NEXT EPISODE' of "HOW MUCH WE'RE GOING TO DO FOR AMERICA"! GIVE ME A BREAK!

Concerned Citizen, IN   January 3rd, 2008 7:58 pm ET

Mati is a perfect example of what is wrong with many Americans. Seems to me a person who comes from a family with a muslim, atheist, and christianity is one who has an excellent grasp of tolerance. Mati on the other hand, refuses to vote for him because he has a Muslim father? Are those the Christian values you are taught in your place of worship? If so, I'll pass…

Our supposed "Christian" Americans continue to show their intolerance for other religions and push to impose their views on the rest of the country by pulling for a candidate like Huckabee, who is probably the least republican of any candidate, but he's a former preacher and opposes abortion.

You want to talk about taking advantage of what works? How about Huckabee telling Romney religion shouldn't matter, then always reminding everyone he is a former preacher and putting some sort of religious undertone in every commercial he puts out.

David, Dumfries, VA   January 3rd, 2008 7:57 pm ET

Whats really interesting is that this man has to defend an internet rumor. How many candidates have to do this?

The question I pose is "Are you not voting for him because of his color?"

People need to wake up. Americans ..you can make it worst..or better. Be wise, in your selection.

Umm…being committed to the black community does not mean excluding any other community; it does not even imply a preference – that's simply retarded. It's like saying that because you are committed to the fight against cancer means you are not committed to the fight against aids. The church is simply calling attention to a community that it hopes to continue to build, given historical odds. Obama himself is free to aid whatever other calling (i.e. presidency) he has to the benefit of humankind!! What a guy, what a guy – that Barack Obama!

Dave-o, Honolulu HI   January 3rd, 2008 7:52 pm ET

So what if he is. I remember a quaint document called the Constitution and the Bill of Rights that guarantees freedom of religion.

I think it's pretty arrogant of anyone to judge someone based on his/her religion. I'm a "red Letter" Christian that believe what Jesus says in "red letters" in the Bible. I think he said "judge not lest ye be judged…"

bevana, Barack Obama has not been hiding his middle name — I would have thought everyone knew it by now. And what in the world does his middle name have to do with anything anyway? Why is it an issue? Why has it ever been an issue? This is one of the most idiotic things to come out of the entire campaign.

And he has talked about his life MANY times. How have you missed all of this? He was raised in a non-religious home and attended Catholic and public schools. He joined the United Church of Christ many years before he got into politics. Even if he were Muslim, though, why would you assume that means he hates America? There are a lot of Muslims in this country who are just as loyal to America as any Christian.

I doubt that you are interested in facts but, just in case, you can read more at the Urban Legends web site: http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/muslim.asp.

I am not necessarily voting for Barack Obama — I haven't made up my mind yet — but it drives me crazy that people are making decisions about him based on an endless list of completely false information circulating by email. I wouldn't have thought it necessary to point this out, but just because something is written in an email doesn't mean it's true.

Snicklefritz   January 3rd, 2008 7:50 pm ET

Les said: "Obama is a MUSLIM but converted to christianity because it was PRUDENT for him to do so as he was running for public office"

I agree with BV's post… WHERE are your facts LES??? Floating around in your little mind somewhere?? Was Obama ever an official follower of the Muslim religion? Even if he was, does that make him some evil being? Do you believe he JUST converted to christianity so he could run for President? Do you get abducted by aliens from your trailer park often?

Bevana said: "Why this candiate BARACK "HUSSEIN" OBAMA, has been hidding his middle name?????" (Love Bevana's grammer)

Don't think he has or could hide is middle name. Most of you backwards people LOVE to mention his middle name, and for some reason you like to quote it too. Bevana, you should probably learn the English language a little better before you post also. Your fragmented sentences make you seem, well, probably what you are. Bevana, "Why can he explain??????" you typed so elegantly. LOL, I think he can explain!!

Len, Fallbrook, CA   January 3rd, 2008 7:49 pm ET

I don't care if he is black, white or both. I don't care what his religion is, or was.

I do care about what he has done, which to say is a short list to be kind.

He promotes "Change" but is very short on what he will change and how he will do that.

He is severely lacking in experience, decisionmaking, managing, and leading anything.

His rhetoric is inspiring but there is nothing to back it up.

All he has ever done is move tax money from one entitlement program to another, and raise taxes when they run out of money.

Just like Hillary and Edwards.

you know whats funny? religious people will say "because people are straying away from god we are in horrible times" well i dont understand that because it seems to me that since some of humanity has let go of its dependance on gods and ancient rituals we have seen breakthroughs in medicine education economy and technology. what is with this ignorance that the president has to believe in god like if the president doesnt believe in god he will punish us? its ridiculous that some people are still stuck in the stone age. doesnt anybody see the trend that god is on everyones side? the muslims think god is on there side the christians think he is on there side the jews think the same and so on. and the worst part of it is they think everyone is wrong besides them of course. but they ALL believe it deeply and in the same exact way. every culture has issues and problems america, which is trying to be considered a christian nation, there is problems with fanatics, health care, discimination, education, laziness and corruption. in the middle east problems with fanatics, education, corruption, murder, discrimination, poverty. we all have the same problems regardless of religion and the more dedicated to a religion one region gets the worse that region becomes. being kind and accepting in religious terms is a new philosophy its only been in the last 100 or so years that you have been able to CHOOSE what religion you wanted to be a part of. for thousands maybe even millions of years it was forced upon people through the sword. and the only reason people now are ABLE to practice freely is through FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION, DEMOCRACY AND FREE THINKING. all of which are steps AWAY from believing in a GOD. come on already lets grow up…………

I will find it be an enormous tragedy in a post 9-11 world if we support a candidate with so little experience. Obama is nothing more than a good speaker, where's his record? Where are his results? A lot of you never think of that. Obama is a MUSLIM but converted to christianity because it was PRUDENT for him to do so as he was running for public office.

I'm surprise how people are easily fooled by Obama. A person who doesn't show any respect for our flag do NOT deserve my vote or votes from any patriotic Americans who love this country.

OBAMA IS AN OPPORTUNIST!

Les, I usually try to be very civil in forums like this, but you are an uninformed, rumor spreading idiot.

Obama has NEVER been a practicing Muslim. Just because distant members of his family were, does not make it so. My Grandfather was a Lutheran Preacher. And I was confirmed as a Lutheran. But at this point I have no faith, mainly because most turbo christians are a pain in everyones behind. I'm an Athiest and have more morality than most christians I know. He did not have his hands on his Crotch, and it is not mandatory to have ones hands over their heart for the Anthem. The Pledge, certainly.

John   January 3rd, 2008 7:35 pm ET

I find it unconscionable that a once respected organization like CNN would allow something like this to be published as a minor "headline" on the night of the Iowa caucuses. It wasn't news when it was new, it's certainly not news now. CNN's own writer of the "article" includes a note (more than half-way through it), that the detractors were "discredited".

Perhaps the light that shines so brightly on the faces of those seeking office, should be turned for once on those who cover them for us. Unfortunately, they're the one's holding the lamp.

It would serve CNN better to shine the light on the dictionary and clean up the many, many, many mis-spellings in all it's articles – can anyone proofread there?

For the record – I am a political agonistic, not favoring an of the democrats or republicans – but I loathe (that means "stongly dislike" for the folks at CNN) poor journalism.

Whatever happened to separation of church (religion) and state (politics)??? Obama's religious views (and any other candidate's for that matter) are irrelevant to his capacity to be a good president. In my view, NO president or candidate should be discussing their personal religious views as these have NO place in contemporaray politics in a multi-cultural society. What is very disturbing is when political leaders publicly refer to religious figures to justify their political decisions – that is completely outrageous – religion is for individuals, politics is for the NATION.

julian from kansas city   January 3rd, 2008 7:33 pm ET

i really think people need to understand that politique is about the tenacity of the candidats and everybody needs to vote for who they believe can run the country it does'nt have to do nothing about his name or religion because you have to be a USA citizen to be able to stand and represanting your country so please dont try to mixe apple pie and applecider to the same ice cream. good luck to everybody and happy new year new year.

MarkieBee, Sacramento, Calif.   January 3rd, 2008 7:32 pm ET

The Clinton News Network feels the need to start its ticker with a report about ONE question concerning his religion out of hundreds Obama has taken over the past few days. NICE! The Clinton New Network posts this crap about 10 minutes before the caucus sites open in Iowa. BRILLIANT! Expect a congratulatory phone call from either Patti Solis-Doyle or Mark Penn any time now. Pathetic excuse for a news organization…

sherry   January 3rd, 2008 7:32 pm ET

Its really to bad that there are people out there that have nothing better to do than slander people. I would hope that as adults you would act more grown than this, You all act like a bunch of 2 year olds. If you all did your research, Obama is a christian. So what if his father was muslum, that doesnt make him a bad person or any less of a man.
I would like to just make one reference…Look at all the catholic priest that molested young children. Does this mean all catholics are bad?

Obama goes to Trinity Church. Look it up on the internet. It is for blacks only, no whites allowed. This guy has a shadey past and should not be running for President. He is a Racist pure and simple. I support no other canidates. CTS, Veteran

Karen Tyler   January 3rd, 2008 7:31 pm ET

Obama is a great guy and I believe a great leader but….

His church is a racist church, with black ethics for the exclusion of other races. What are his thoughts on oriental families, hispanic families, white families…..human families?

Obama's Trinity United Church of Christ adheres to "The Black Value System" which includes the following points from their website.

Trinity United Church of Christ adopted the Black Value System written by the Manford Byrd Recognition Committee chaired by Vallmer Jordan in 1981. We believe in the following 12 precepts and covenantal statements. These Black Ethics must be taught and exemplified in homes, churches, nurseries and schools, wherever Blacks are gathered. They must reflect on the following concepts:
1. Commitment to God
2. Commitment to the Black Community
3. Commitment to the Black Family
4. Dedication to the Pursuit of Education
5. Dedication to the Pursuit of Excellence
6. Adherence to the Black Work Ethic
7. Commitment to Self-Discipline and Self-Respect
8. Disavowal of the Pursuit of "Middleclassness"
9. Pledge to make the fruits of all developing and acquired skills available to the Black Community
10. Pledge to Allocate Regularly, a Portion of Personal Resources for Strengthening and Supporting Black Institutions
11. Pledge allegiance to all Black leadership who espouse and embrace the Black Value System
12. Personal commitment to embracement of the Black Value System.

OMG Nick, get a grip. "I will LOVE you all my life! USA." Are you from Haiti or something? "The mere mention of the name OBAMA will make the world fall in love with USA again." Maybe this is from Somolia!?! "Obama will cure the anti-Americanism I promise you my fellow American!" "Think for a second!!! Think long term! Think prosperity again!! This reminds me of a video tape that we saw about 4 years ago on election eve. If this is not from Haiti or Somolia, could it be OSAMA?!? No thanks Nick!

Brian   January 3rd, 2008 7:28 pm ET

I can't believe some of the idiots out there. Atheists can't be good presidents? Really? Interesting.

So Obama has a funny name that is about as unfortunate as names could be in this day and age. His middle name is the last name of a dictator that the U.S. overthrew and his last name is only one letter off from a famous terrorist who killed thousands of Americans on 9/11.

But does that honestly mean anything? If Obama had a name like "John Murray" or "Calvin Johnston" he'd already be in the White House by now. But because of his name and his skin color and his upbringing, he's had to overcome shockingly large obstacles. But he has overcome them and he's become a staple of hope and optimism for the American people.

How anyone could fail to support Obama is beyond me. He is an incredible person and it's not surprising to me that most people leave his speeches in tears. He is the only truly inspired candidate in the race.

Kokou   January 3rd, 2008 7:26 pm ET

CNN, this is not news. Obama is a Muslim. He is a Christian who believe in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. The Clinton's machine still pushing this type of allegation because they lot the West. They don't know how to deal with a defeat. My advice for them is to go and sit down and ask God to forgive for all their lies. America needs Obama in this crucial time.

Go Obama, you have my vote.

Howler   January 3rd, 2008 7:26 pm ET

Personally, I am an atheist: of course, that instantly and irretrievably makes me a immoral fiend who likes to torture small children. Stop this crap about atheists and Muslims; what would it matter if he was either one? Very few muslims are bad people; very few Christians are bad people. Even fewer Buddhists are bad people.

What religion a person is should have no bearing on how someone views them, no more than their skin or eye color. And if there are any racists out there, I have one thing to say to you; screw you.

Ty   January 3rd, 2008 7:26 pm ET

I agree, some people in this country are totally clueless when it comes thinking on their own. Andy, you couldn't have said it more right. Religion has no place in today's politics.

Erik   January 3rd, 2008 7:25 pm ET

I would vote for him if he was an Atheist, or Muslim, or Christian. It is Xenophobia that causes Anti-Americanism, What is so amazing about a president that isn't a Christian? or a Black president, or a Woman president? Nothing, All of those are trivial when it comes to being the President. What matters is can they do the job well? can they improve our nation? can they help end Anti-Americanism? can they solve our internal problems? if so, then who in their right mind would care that theyre of a different religion, or a different color, or a different Gender, or even a different sexual orientation than the previous presidents?

VoteResponbly08   January 3rd, 2008 7:22 pm ET

Who cares about Obama's religion..What we should be worried about is the inexperience he has. We are in crucial times and many challenges face our
nation in which Mr. Obama is not qualified. We should vote responsibly and a
responsible vote is not voting for Mr. Obama..Maybe in 8 years when he gets
more groomed for the white house…At this time it is tooo dangerous and because
of what our country is facing we need someone with experience. He offers hope and change..Words… One can only make things happen with experience and with that comes the hope…We can not put our Wonderful Country in the hands of a
Jr. Senator with no experience…

Joe, SoCal   January 3rd, 2008 7:21 pm ET

Why does he "hide" his middle name? How has he hid it? Does John Edwards walk around saying, "My name is John Reid Edwards?"

Bradley   January 3rd, 2008 7:20 pm ET

Some people make me sick. First off, just what must Obama do to prove what he's said over and over? He's Christian, and I'll hammer that into your thick skulls and deaf ears if I have to!

Also, I would like to point out he's far more patriotic than lots of people. To be proper, you salute the flag ONLY WHEN SAYING THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE, NOT SINGING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM!!! Oh, and it's not a crime to not wear a flag pin. Whoever started that practice should be shunned for failing to observe flag ettiquette.

Some people's nerve… but hey, ignorance is ignorance. I'll just let bygones be bygones.

Obama 2008 and 2012!

Heathcliffe, New York City   January 3rd, 2008 7:19 pm ET

He was a Muslim but chenged his religion when he was planning to run for U.S. government office.

CastEvil   January 3rd, 2008 7:17 pm ET

I like the fact that Obama went to a muslim school in his youth. With many of our international issues in the world having to do with muslim religion, I feel that someone with some insight into their hearts and minds in the White House would be a good thing. The current administration does nothing but incite hate towards America. Its time for a change.

He has the same insights into the christian community as well, I recommend that those who question watch his talk on faith on You Tube. He is potentially the true uniter. With his enthusiasm and smarts, he is the only person that I believe can do this.

~Watch Obama Bring us to Peace Given the Chance

Chris   January 3rd, 2008 7:17 pm ET

Wow! This is a nothing report! Great job CNN this is why I've ignored you guys for years!

I find it interesting when a complete nobody gets press for questioning Barack's faith. When they should be questioning why Edwards wants to help our nations poor but voted for the war. You don't have to be an economic genius to know that war is costly and it's usually the poor that suffers the most. Hillary voted for the war too so who cares about her alleged experience in the White House (alleged because she hasn't released her papers when she was first lady).

Our country needs a Leader rather than politicians that say a lot of magical things but don't have the record or the know how to put this country back together. OBAMA 08!

Gary   January 3rd, 2008 7:16 pm ET

How is this frontpage news on CNN? Come on guys, you're telling me this and Romney's hair are the biggest stories on the day of the Iowa caucuses? You'd be better off putting up nothing at all!

KATHY VENTURA, CA   January 3rd, 2008 7:15 pm ET

Why does Obama ALWAYS answer questions of his religion with the exact same line (down to the exact words) He is not being asked what church he attends. People want to know what he BELIEVES. That must be much harder for him to answer because he has yet to answer that question.

Ian   January 3rd, 2008 7:15 pm ET

Obviously he's an atheist if he's running for president.

Eric NYC   January 3rd, 2008 7:15 pm ET

It's going to be nice when your(CNN's) candidate loses tonight. What will be the propoganda tomorrow?

Frank Tillery   January 3rd, 2008 7:14 pm ET

This is why our nation's Founding Fathers wanted to keep Religion and Politics separate. We should not be asking these sort of questions about our political leaders. Who cares what religion they follow if any at all? What we need is a strong, moral (not synonymous with religious), intelligent leader.

Being religious does not necessarily make you a better person. Remember free will? Those rooted in their religion may behave in an upstanding, moral way or they can be complete idiots that have no understanding of God whatsoever. Let us find the right man or woman to lead our country.

At this time, I would consider Wile E. Coyote if he could address some of the ills that are facing our nation right now: Immigration, Health Care, our physical and virtual Infrastructures, outdated and unfair tax system…not to mention our position as world leaders when it comes to democracy and the general welfare of our species and planet.

Don't we draw enough lines in the sand already?

Man…if Christ or whatever messiah you believe in were to come back as promised, he/she might need to go into exile or face the same types of ridicule and persecution.

Just a thought…

Kim, Dallas, TX   January 3rd, 2008 7:13 pm ET

All I can say is GO OBAMA!! You have shown you can overcome the idocracy that lives and breathes in our country. It's sad that people put so much credence into forwarded email messages that are created to sway elections. If people really want to know what is the truth out there, find reputable resources to research. The truth is there, you only need to do a little bit of research to find it. I don't respect people who fall into believing what is forwarded in email. I have found that even the "heart felt" amber alerts that we are asked to forward to as many people as possible are not even true. There are websites to check to see which emails being forwarded are true and which are not. Take that extra step to see if what you are reading is true or not. My own sister in law fell into believing Obamas religion was Muslim. It's amazing to me how truly ignorant even the most educated people can be. I know people fear Muslims, but even if Obama was Muslim, there are indeed good people in that religion as well. Those showing their hatred are showing the weakness and faults of their own religious preferences.

I would vote for Obama over another Religious prophecing Bush anyday of the week and twice on Sunday!

Paul, Tampa   January 3rd, 2008 7:12 pm ET

As a nation we need to remove religion from the political arena. People who subscribe to a faith are simply unable to employ any sort of lucid reasoning when facing a choice between candidates of varying religious backgrounds.

The idea of America, from the beginning of this country, was to create a place where there was room for all variations in beliefs and ways of life. It is great that so many of us are so firmly rooted in faith. However, this is not India, Pakistan, or Afghanistan and it would be wrong to represent it as such. When one religion dominates, all others are in danger of being repressed and I can think of nothing more unAmerican than repressing individuals based on faith.

So leave the religion at church/temple/mosque/synagogue and start worrying about the positions of candidates on the issues that actually affect the future of America and try not to be xenophobic while you are at it.

hoping for facts   January 3rd, 2008 7:12 pm ET

I do think it's important to report on this story- because clearly so many people are still being confused from these emails. (snopes folks!)

What I wish is that CNN would do a better job of highlighting the actual facts about Obama in the same article. Linking to the video where Obama directly talks about that steak fry event where he sang instead of putting his hand over his heart for the national anthem would be a good start. Linking to an article with factual research about Obama's upbringing and confirmed public religious history would be another excellent way to actually inform people of more than just gossip.

Voting for a candidate, is simple (to a degree), just look at the voting record. However, there are some things that require an explanation about the voting record (if there is one).

In addition, many words are taken out-of-context, to make others think contrary to the candidates intent. I have discovered this while reading comments above, and things mentioned via the news. Huckabee's comments have been misconstrued, based on the explainations I have taken the time to listen to.

When one wants to know the truth, it is apparent there will be a listening ear.

John Haigh, Arbor Vitae, Wi.   January 3rd, 2008 7:05 pm ET

Its interesting to hear people say that a candidate has to be religious in order to get elected. 80% of Americans say they are Christian, but how many of these 80% truly live their lives as Christians.
George Bush lived a life of sin in his earlier years, but isn't it great that he has been born again and can now lead a nation as a true Christian. Give me a break!
Take a look around the world and you'll probably find out that 75% of the mayhem is religious-oriented. GIVE ME A GOOD OLE FASHIONED ATHESIEST and maybe some of our problems can be solved. Oh, by the way, Christians do not have a stranglehold on knowing what is right and wrong.

Michael Anderson   January 3rd, 2008 7:05 pm ET

I live in Milwaukee. My sister lives in Chicago. My daughter lives in Houston, and my uncle lives in San Francisco. I do not have relatives in New York, but if I did I am sure that they would feel the same as the rest of us. Thank God we are no longer required to vote. We are so relieved that the presidential election has already been decided by two little itty bitty states. Only in America! Praise the Lord! The media in this country is the joke on us. Can you name the last President who actually won those two little states?
There are those of us that are not as stupid as our media.

Keith says:

Geez, what would be so horrible about an atheist running for president if they were a good, moral person? What discrimination.

There is no such thing as an atheist who is a good, moral person. All moral standards come from God and the Bible. Obama? Eeh… — Huckabee? That's more like it.

I am a soldier. And where as I may choose to salute the flag, I really dont think all americans have to do it to be patriotic. I took an oath to defend the constitution, and so I understand that I protect everyones right to disagree with me as well. The way that I understood the separation of church and state as it was intended, was to actually keep the government from being involved in the affairs of the church. Im not at all offended at differing veiws. Its the whole point of freedom isnt it?

Dale, In   January 3rd, 2008 6:54 pm ET

Barack Obama is and has been listed as Christian, but not that it should matter because there is a separation between church and state. Not only does he go to church, but so does his family. It would be one thing to claim Christianity for socio-political reasons, but it's a sign when his wife and children are Christian; meaning even if and only if he wasn't (which again, he is listed as) Christian, he most definitely respects and supports those who are.

To the posters of the comments that regard Barack Obama not saluting the flag:

According to US Military standards, when not in uniform and during the national anthem, you do not (have to) salute the flag; the proper acknowledgment of the flag in civilian attire is to assume the position of attention and face the flag from the first note of the national anthem to the last. The hand over the heart is optional. By Barack Obama not saluting the flag is in no way disrespectful toward the flag or nation.

Watching this campaign progress as an Australian, it is scary for us that the focus is purely on having a religious leader at all, as long as the leader is a smart, strong, good, moral and ethical person. Being christian does not automatically mean a person is smart or moral, e.g. Bush, the most reviled leader of the 20th century,…

susie,ga   January 3rd, 2008 6:45 pm ET

Obama is what he is – or what we want him to be. The young man is still figuring out what and who he is, this makes him a man who can serve this country well because he is not full of himself… but I am afraid he may be too inexperienced. I would like him to serve as vice for 8-years and then run – WOW he's kick tail!

John, Danville, PA   January 3rd, 2008 6:43 pm ET

I am a HUGE moron. I will only vote for people who salute the flag and put their hand on their heart. If they can do that, they can by G*d run a country purdy darn well! If it's true that Obama once didn't put his hand on his heart, I will NEVER vote for him, because, again, I am a huge moron.

Mike Abraham, Roxbury, CT   January 3rd, 2008 6:37 pm ET

Personally, I think all organized religion is a sham. Christian notions of a god are no better or truer than those of any other monotheistic, or for that matter polytheistic, paganistic, animistic or other notions of deities.

Life can be fully experienced by practicing awareness of what is right here in front of us, and pursuing worldly knowledge and accepting that there are some things we just don't know. At the very least, as human beings our self-fulfillment and awareness require that we search for our own meaning rather than accepting doctrines that we are unknowlingly weaned upon.

God Votes for Me   January 3rd, 2008 6:35 pm ET

It is people like Zanata El-Moore that continually erode my faith in humanity. Seriously, if you heard he was an atheist, do the research yourself. How hard is it? Oh, and really…Would an Atheist candidate be THAT bad? Is he or she going to run wild with their atheist propoganda and spew their 'immoral' values onto the country? Try thinking for yourself, Zanata. You'd be amazed at the capacity your brain runs at when given a chance.

BV   January 3rd, 2008 6:34 pm ET

'Obama is a MUSLIM but converted to christianity because it was PRUDENT for him to do so as he was running for public office.'
Thats a pretty bold statement. You must have concrete evidence that Obama was not only accepted into the Muslim Church, but also prayed to Allah and continues to do so in secret.
I mean, if you didn't have really solid evidence that you could post here for everyone to see, you'd just be slandering someone for the sake of slander! And that's just silly. That would be like admitting you need to lie to make people dislike something you dislike. You don't need to do that, do you?
I would love to read all about how Obama still is a secret Muslim. Maybe you and Hitler can get together and find way to deal with all the Muslims just like he tried to deal with all the Jews. After all, next to not saluting the flag to YOUR satisfaction, being any religion other than Protestant Christian should preclude a person from being President.
So Les, lets see those sources! I can't wait!

anonymous   January 3rd, 2008 6:32 pm ET

it doesnt matter what religion someone has; for all i care they can worship satan as long as they are a good leader to this country and do what is in the best interest of its people. someone can still be moral and atheist, to suggest otherwise is absurd. the statement made by Moore-El, " I don't want a president who's an atheist," makes me sad to be living in this country and associated with close minded individuals that have never thought objectively in their life.

Ben   January 3rd, 2008 6:28 pm ET

Alright, for the last time, Obama did NOT do coke, he did Marijuana as a teenager (quite a while back…our current president has done coke, and had DUI's). Also, Obama has saluted the flag and held his hand over his heart many times, there was controversy over one picture that looked like he wasn't holding his hand over his heart, though in other video it showed he was, for most of it, holding his hand over his heart…though either way it shouldn't matter. He's not a Muslim, whether or not his grandpa is doesn't matter (not that him being a Christian should matter either). If you vote on anything other than the issues you are an idiot. People can change from who they used to be or who their father was, and if someone tells you too many of the "right" things you want to hear they're much more likely a phony. If you get caught up in the peripheral stuff you'll fall right into the hands of whatever candidate you're already predisposed to voting for.

Joe, SoCal   January 3rd, 2008 6:28 pm ET

Excellent. I was positive Clinton News Network would put out a last minute smear on Obama. Good show CNN!

To my good friends in Iowa, please disregard the fearmongers and paid Hillary bloggers. Strike a blow for humanity, and VOTE BARACK!

BV   January 3rd, 2008 6:28 pm ET

"I only vote for those who love our god and are country."
Ah yes, because if you salute the flag, it means you respect it and understand what it really means. Bush covers his heart and salutes the flag, then proceeds to erode civil liberties, begin illegal wars, torture those captured by the United States, give tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans, deny sick children access to health care, and appoint cronies to head up government offices which he believes shouldn't even exist.
So please, vote only for those who are patriotic on the outside. Being a Patriot on the inside is VERY overrated.

"I don't want a president who's an atheist. " Humanity will never succeed if religion is their priority of what a man's success is.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   January 3rd, 2008 6:24 pm ET

Voting Americans are asking some of the right questions about these candidates but are failing to ask the most important question. What is the mental stability of these candidates? When you have a candidate such as Huckabee who didn't know didn't know Pakistan was no longer under marshall order, that American writers are on strike, and building a border between Bhutto and the U.S., something is wrong. Running for political office is not a proof of ones mental stability, it's just not enough.

Not saluting the flag does not mean that he lacks patriotism. Everyday thousands of students stand up, cover their hearts, and recite the pledge of allegiance. But the every day recitation becomes monotonous. This monotony imparts familiarity and causes something made to instill patriotism into a meaningless motion. And it is my belief that some of these candidates may simply go through the motions just to appear to you to be patriotic. Patriotism however is not derived from saluting the flag, or from singing the national anthem. It is evident that Obama is patriotic through his actions in wanting a better nation, in running in this election and putting forth his self so that we all may have a better nation. If you simply want to see a flag saluting puppet i suggest you reevaluate your priorities and learn about the issues that really matter. BARACK OBAMA FOR 2008

I think at this point most Iowans and some democrats know that he is not a Muslim and that he is a christian. But what most people in the rest of the country do not know is his full name and the media is going out of their way not to ever print his full name on any of the articles. like they need to keep this a secret until he gets the dems nomination. I think the voters and the public need to know that his full name is BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA. And that does not mean just beacuse he is a HUSSEIN he is a muslim. This is why people are wondering why is he and the media hiding his full name and that is how rumors start.

terry   January 3rd, 2008 6:16 pm ET

the only person who will direct this nation toward prosperity is Obama, please stop spreading this rumour Clinton

Trang, Fremont, CA   January 3rd, 2008 6:15 pm ET

Although he is not a Muslim, but so what? There are 'good' Muslims who has good values and there are 'bad' Muslims who have lost their way and hurt people. Same thing can be said for any faith, any nation.

He is a decent human being, with a great heart, seeking to bring this country together in a time of divisiness, if not the whole world.

He alone cannot do it. However, his ability to inspire people from all across the country, give them hope, get them to start caring for their community, organize in their community, and one by one, we start reconnecting and rebuild the country.

So, it's not only Obama, but the family that Obama starts creating from across this country, if not the whole world.

Of course, we all care, but that side is subdued because we live in the world of cynicism, but he gives us hope and lit that fire up.

So cynics, if you have lost faith, refrain from your criticism. Let those who care and inspire by him start rebuilding this county. We know it's going to be hard work. I hope you don't kill the hope out of us with your cynicism.

Obama has NO respect for the flag, his hands were resting on his crotch while the national anthem were played. How do you think our men and women in uniform would react? A lot of you never think of that. Obama is a MUSLIM but converted to christianity because it was PRUDENT for him to do so as he was running for public office.

I'm surprise how people are easily fooled by Obama. A person who doesn't show any respect for our flag do NOT deserve my vote or votes from any patriotic Americans who love this country.

OBAMA IS AN OPPORTUNIST!

The sloppy and irresponsible reporting by "fair and balanced" Fox News has given this false email credibility. CNN did their own reporting and found that this was false. Please read –

I cannot believe you posted this. I was wondering how the Clinton News Network would get this smear out one more time on Caucus night. He must be asked this all the time – the story has been done to death – it's not news. Continuing to push it exposes your bias. I am appalled.

Americans, why are so many people concerned whether a person is religious or not?? It has absolutely no bearing on a person's moral character, and it also has no place in politics!!! I am so fed up with church encroaching into politics. What about the separation? Read books other than just the bible people, which is a past culture's outdated moral code – that's all. It and the beliefs have NO PLACE in present day politics. That's what wars are started over – think about it. Really, THINK ABOUT IT.

Obama is that Dream Dr. King once spoke about. He has become a national leader, gained educational prestige, and now he WILL be the first african-American president. He took that opportunity Dr. King fought for and took it to the pinnacle of our sometimes hypocritical society.

Obama IS a Christian. Like Romney. And Obama IS for civil/equal rights for ALL Americans no matter their skin color/relgion/ethnicity…again just like Mitt Romney. Seems to me that Obama could be the object of a bigoted hate crime attack just as Romney has been based on their respective religions or skin color ethnicity. Also it seems to me that the common denominator in both cases is the couple of canidates who launched their careers out of that Arkansas "good 'ol Boy revivalist, white-sheet-sportin' club. The same group that push polls, e-mails rumors, and threatens to knock out people's teeth and choke them. And the same couple of Arkansas clickity-clannish revivalists who seem to have a monopoly on the foreign owned media group's Late Night Talk Show appearances as of late…coincidence??? Hmmmm….if you *can't* see it there's not much you CAN see.

Texans like folks like Romney, Thompson, Obama, and Hunter. Texans DON'T like sleazy racist bigots who appear as though they are running for Grand Wizard/Wizardess instead of President of the United States of America!!! And I suspect that most Americans can see through the dirty tricks and smear campaigns as easily as Obama/Romney do and as easily as my fellow Texans and I do. We are ALL Americans, and NO ONE should be shut out of serving in our government Of The PEOPLE, For The PEOPLE, and By The PEOPLE by hate mongoring bigots!!! Go Mitt! Go Barack!!! Go Fred!!!

We all make mistakes. The important thing is to acknowledge them, accept responsibility for your actions and to tell the truth.

Obama is a good, honest man. Rather vote for somone that tells the truth – rather than lie like Clinton or just refuse to answer the question like Bush.

Mike, Cologne, GER   January 3rd, 2008 6:10 pm ET

Omg, rumors are only as intelligent as their authors are. And this special e-mail authorsdon't vote for Obama ;)

Huge Moran   January 3rd, 2008 6:10 pm ET

I too only vote for morans since I am one. Therefore, I agree with sodapop that Obama won't get my vote, because I'm a huge idiot and that's what I decide my leaders by. I don't use common sense, or the fact that they will make life better for me and fellow Americans, instead I base my vote on whether or not I saw a candidate salute a flag.

P.S. Did I mention I was a moron

Josh   January 3rd, 2008 6:03 pm ET

I wish e-mail rumors, prank phone calls, etc could be banned from politics!!! Obama is a Christian plain and simple!

The web is such a great way to deliver election news to political junkies. Why do you torture us with this garbage? There have been real developments in the campaigns since Romney made his hair comment. This isn't one of them.

Keith   January 3rd, 2008 6:02 pm ET

Geez, what would be so horrible about an atheist running for president if they were a good, moral person? What discrimination.

sodapop s.e.mo.   January 3rd, 2008 6:00 pm ET

every political runner i've seen running has saluted the flag. Obama never once saluted. nor has he covered his heart towards the flag. he will never get my vote. I only vote for those who love our god and are country.

Colin   January 3rd, 2008 5:58 pm ET

yea and bush is the rick james of cocaine use along with DUI convictions. OBAMA '08

Janie   January 3rd, 2008 5:58 pm ET

Bush DOES COKE NOW!!!!! ~thats a problem

Mati   January 3rd, 2008 5:56 pm ET

Obama makes a selection from his heritage of what can appeal to Americans. Grandma in Kenya is good for international experience, but forget about the Muslim grandpa. Christian values from his mother's side is good for Americans but forget about his father's atheism. He is a politician who takes advantage of what works and disregards what it doesn't.

Mark, San Diego, CA   January 3rd, 2008 5:52 pm ET

I heard that he did coke a few times.

nick   January 3rd, 2008 5:51 pm ET

THESE are the people caucusing in Iowa? Wow, no wonder we have the president we have.

shamsi   January 3rd, 2008 5:47 pm ET

how many time he has to explain to you people that he is christian, is this how you listen to all the candidates and what they have to offer for the future of this great nation?
