Toobin: Keep an eye on Warren County

(CNN) - There's a lot to watch in Iowa, of course, but I'm going to be keeping an eye on the results from tiny Warren County (pop. 44,000), which includes several suburbs south of Des Moines. Since 1980, Warren has been an uncanny bellwether for the results statewide, and this holds true for both Democratic and Republican races. In 1980, George H.W. Bush won Warren with 32 percent of the vote - the same as his winning statewide total. In 1988, Bob Dole won 36 percent in both Warren and the state. On the Democratic side, Al Gore won 64 percent in 2000, one percent more than his statewide total. In 2004, John Kerry won 37 percent in Warren, 38 percent in the state. It's almost bizarre. We should be getting the results in Warren, and the rest of Iowa, starting a little after 8 p.m. EST.

I sure would keep an eye on Warren County as well. I would especially watch those voting machines. Did anyone ever think of the possibility that the machines could "accidentally" be mislabled. When you vote Democratic you are actually voting Republican and vice versa. I have thought of that many times.

Good point! Unfortunately, they aren't voting democratic or republican. This caucus process is among democrats and republicans separately. So any "bait and switch" scams would be among rivals of the same party. Could this be a good test of the entrance and exit polling? I think we need to scrutinize every aspect of this early process to get ahead of the scams that plagued last elections. Misdirected people and lost counts. I think Jeffrey Toobin is an excellent person to critically analyze these matters. I welcome his role in this election process prior to and not just after the fact. The real big number is going to be the percentage of independants that favor democrats over republicans. Five minutes to go.

"In 1980, George H.W. Bush won Warren with 32 percent of the vote — the same as his winning statewide total."

And a lot of good it did him in that nominating process, too!

As a former resident of Des Moines Iowa I find this "first" caucus to be extremely interesting due to the fact that each of the candidates is so qualified.

I do think that the Media is responsible for there being "only 3" top tier candidates. Had the Media paid as much attention (exposure) to those designated as lower tier members, we may have found a much larger number in the top tier.

Hopefully, for those candidates that do not reach the threshold as needed , they will be able to serve in some capacity for the next Administration.
