What GWOT Has Wrought
On September 20, 2001, before a joint session of Congress, President George W. Bush declared, "Our war on terror begins with Al Qaeda, but it does not end there.... Every nation, in every region, now has a decision to make. Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists." As it turned out, those fateful words ushered in not a concerted worldwide campaign against militant fundamentalism but a wave of repression felt around the globe. Instead of being a standard-bearer for human rights and civil liberties, the United States lowered the bar, creating secret prisons or "black sites," erecting Guantánamo, rationalizing torture and curtailing civil liberties at home. The US-fashioned "global war on terror" (GWOT) was then replicated in country after country, adapting to local circumstances to provide rhetorical refuge for tyrants and forsaking democratic principles. As the articles that follow show, the "war on terror" has been invoked to arrest and torture prodemocracy activists in Egypt, round up street vendors and protesters in El Salvador, rationalize politically motivated assassinations in the Philippines, jail bloggers and censor websites in Thailand and condone military dictatorship in Pakistan. The criminalization of dissent is not new to these places, and it does not always reflect US intervention or security interests. But the "war on terror" is a new paradigm, and it has proven remarkably versatile and severely damaging. While purporting to protect democracy against its enemies, the "war on terror" has become one of them.

Maybe Bill will be running for a slot in GA?

So exhibiting class for the married, "family values" hypocrite O'Reilly is to be almost obsessed with discussing vibrators with single women or trying to set up threesomes with them? Is "class" telling the nation that a kidnapped teenage boy is enjoying his capture and then finding out that the boy was beaten, molested, and raped. Bill-O was not MAN enough to personally apologize to the family.

Is "class" having one of his listeners, an elementary school girl, call him to correct him that he didn't know the difference between the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution and then Bill-O wasn't MAN enough to admit he was wrong. He just double-talked about them both being about the same. Keith Olbermann is MAN enough to publicly admit when he makes a mistake.

This guys a hack and to have a conservative at a DEMO function is further evidence that "Swiftboating" is going to begin as soon as NH is over.

This is the BEST possible example for what a mistake it was for Bush to veto the spending bill for education. It seems beyond belief that anyone could be so COMPLETELY WRONG. Bush has sure "dumbed-down" America as shown.

Standing on a pulpit telling people that the world owes them anything, that they have a right to the fruits of the labor of other people is low class.

I'm repulsed that a people who were so proud, independent and self reliant have turned into beggars and thieves.

An Oprah worker has said how much they dislike Obama's staff but really like Obama. So maybe they are pretty tough to get along with. On the other hand, I can't wait to, hopefully, hear Keith O. and Stephen Colbert cover this "terrible" treatment of Papa Bear.

You sound like a typical Bill O'Lielly viewer. O'Rielly isn't the most friendly of people. As far as the whole illegals being paid to vote I think that is nonsense. Its something you heard on O'Lielly. Who is this 'we" that told you that New Hampshire required no voter registration, that is really the most outrage thing I have heard because in every state you need a voter registration card, how you get it differs from state to state. And New Hampshire isn't a place where there are many illegals, say like Arizona where your probably from cause you seem so scared of them you ignorant racist c-bag. As far as paying voters that is as illegal as the occupation we call Iraq. As far as suing Indiana for passing a bill requiring an ID, they are suing because the GOP was targeting people who they ASSumed were not legal, basically the GOP decided to become the voter precint police, which is just as illegal as paying voters to vote for a certain candidate. Bill probably had this image of himself riding up to Obama on a brilliant white stallion prepared to do ideological battle with the enemy. Bill, with his entourage of squires in tow, armed with cameras, mics, and his magical misquoting notepad, descended into the dark liberal place known as New Hampshire. Humanitarians to the left, educated people to the right, Bill would not be daunted. Sworn to get half the story, he was prepared with all his weapons. Voice dubbing, name calling, mic cutting, and misquoting, were all at the ready. Add a secret cell of undercover Fox special security ready to escort people out of his interviews and he couldn't lose, . . . except he was late and didn't get a good spot so he threw a tantrum. What a tool.

The only reason Fox keeps him around is because it so hard to find someone willing to do to themselves what Bill does on a daily basis. It's another great example of why the GOP can't depend on Bill to follow their playbook.

Kudos to Obama for putting up with this nut-job so professionally.
