(CNN) - Voters who made up their minds in the past 24 hours made a break for one Republican presidential candidate, according to CNN exit polls.

When it comes to those who made up their mind more than a month ago, McCain and Romney were just a few points apart, 32 to 26 percent. The two – who have been neck-and-neck in most recent surveys - were just as close, or closer, among voters who made up their minds last month, last week, and over the past few days.

But Massachusetts governor led McCain 41 to 26 percent among voters who made their pick within the last month – which includes a period when Romney, and virtually no other GOP candidate, was advertising heavily in the state.

And in a sign Romney may have had a bit of momentum heading into the race’s final hours, those who made their decision within the past day overwhelmingly chose him over McCain: he led the Arizona senator in that category, 39 to 25 percent.

The glory days of Detroit as a major automotive manufacturer are over and it's been on the decline for 30 or more years. You have a 9 trillion dollar debt, your embroiled in some foreign adventures led by a wacko and your country is in decay. Of course the GOP is now using 'terrorism' as the big boogy man. You have the blind leading the blind down there.

TIME magazine is amazing. It seems that company can't print an article about Romney without injecting negativism into it. Look, TIME: the guy is brilliant. Far more intelligent than any of you writing these articles. The guy can appeal to a lot of the electorate: whether you're Democrat, Republican, or Independent, who doesn't care about the economy? Certainly out of both parties, Romney is by far the best candidate to lift America's fortunes. McCain knows only war, it seems and doesn't seem to understand that America's most pressing national security issue IS the economy.

Voting for Mitt because he "looks presidential?" Consider the man, not the hairdo:

"Mitt Romney initially pledged his total fidelity to Reagan's "three-legged stool" of strong defense, low taxes, and a "pro-life" social agenda. But after losing two states and much of his credibility, he shifted gears in auto-crazed Michigan, promising government action to combat the loss of manufacturing jobs." Boston Globe

Vote once for Mitt and get three or four versions – hope you get one you like!

Scott, you got it right about Shaun. He needs to wise up along with a few other people.

Mitt won the race tonight because he is optimistic about America and the American economy. And he is the man that knows enough to be optimistic and to do the things in office to make that optimism come true.

I want my President to look like the man that brought jobs back to American manufacturing, not the guy that you worked with.

Mitt was the best choice to win Michigan for conservatives even with his pro choice to pro life conversion only a few years old. the fact he has a big family leads to me believe his public and private views on life are closer together now. His immigration plan is sound and tackles everything from border security to removing sanctuary cities and doesn't leave unfair practices that discriminate against American citizens like in state tuition for illegals in place. Wouldn't a system requiring immigrating Mexican families with paperwork in order ahead of time be better? so they can all move together and since they are all here, all their money earned would be spent here? That can't happen until this country dries up all the incentives for cheaters who don't play by the rules. McCain and Huckaby don't care about fixing and cleaning up immigration, they just want the same trashy system of dealing with the 25 million already here in place, so the sliver of the Republican party that has no problem exploiting illegals as a cheap work force stays happy. Mitt is also the only one of the front runners that has created a job in the private sector. He has tangible accomplishments, like, the olympics and Staples he can say see that's what I did. While McCain's accomplishments were destroying 5 aircraft in his navy career, (unfortunately they were all the ones he was flying) and being the democrats favorite Republican. Rudy move on, there is life after 9-11. No Huckaby we don't need a guy that will group think every decision, that guy is a follower not a leader. Lastly, Thompson if your a conservative and can't get along with Fox or recognize allies, how will you get anything through congress? Thank you Michigan for being the first state to get it right!

Anne -Detroit, MI,
No, I am not admitting that. If Romney is the nominee, I will vote Democrat this year - will be my first time ever.

BA   January 15th, 2008 10:26 pm ET

Although I'm a Ron Paul supporter at this point, I'm glad to see Romney win this one. I truly think he is the best of the first tier of either party. My problem with this campaign is that all the candidates are talking only of putting bandages on the cuts and scrapes. They are treating the symptom rather than the disease which is Liberalism. This coupled with a media that refuses to ask the correct questions of the candidates allows the candidates to circumvent the main issues facing us: Illegal immigration, job outsourcing, unaffordable healthcare insurance prices and policies, inflation, Loan Sharkiing by Financial Institutions, etc., etc.,..............Anyone who thinks that any Presidential Candidate can fix all this mess, all by his/her self, is in true La La Land. Believe me Bloomberg can't do it either. He's nothing more than a spoiler, or one who wants a political favor.

Watching Mitt Romney win tonight was wonderful. I couldn't keep myself away from the CNN.com and watching him do his victory speech. I was supposed to be back reading to my boys a bed time story, but it was so exciting. Finally, my two older boys just came out to watch it with me.

It reminded me of when the Red Sox's won the World Series just a few years ago for the first time thereby breaking the curse. Now look how successful that team has been.

Let's watch what Mitt's team does after this win. I let my kids come out, because I wanted to let them to see history in the making.

Anne -Detroit, MI   January 15th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

let's admit it, no matter who the Repub nominee is, most Republicans will vote for him even if grudgingly. NO matter who the Democratic nominee is, most Democrats will vote for her or him. This country is partisan and even if Ron Paul runs independently ., he will not beat a party candidate.

Cory, San Diego, CA   January 15th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

A vote against the liberals Huckabee and McCain is a vote for America. Go Mitt!

Scott   January 15th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

Shaun,

Your comment is similar to most of the anti-Romney rhetoric I read - childish statements that reveal an obvious ignorance of the facts concerning Governor Romney's qualifications and background.. Please get informed.

Romney has more primary wins than any front runner of either party. Mitt Romney has two golds and two silvers. No one of either party has than many votes . Hillary has only one win overall.

Kirsten, F'burg, Virginia   January 15th, 2008 10:01 pm ET

I have a hard time believing these results with the "open primary" stuff. Whats to say that all the liberals voted for him just to spite the Conservatives? It would've been better if they had made it a Republican-Independent primary only, while the Dems had a Dem-Independent primary. That way it would be easier to see what each party really thinks of its own candidates

Mark C. Eades   January 15th, 2008 10:01 pm ET

Mitt Romney's surprise win in the Michigan primary tonight certainly complicates the "comeback" narrative John McCain and his campaign have been working so hard to weave for our amazement, and throws the Republican race (happily, for Democrats) back in utter disarray. True, Romney's victory may be attributable at least in part to the Daily Kos and its campaign to achieve just this effect by convincing disenfranchised Democrats to "cross over" for a day and vote as Republicans for Romney. Perhaps Romney also cried before a live audience somewhere unnoticed by news cameras. The economy seems a more likely culprit for McCain's slide in Michigan, on which count Romney simply talked a better deal. Certainly Romney's plan to bring automotive jobs back to Michigan must have sounded a bit more attractive than McCain's plan to "retrain" unemployed auto workers at community colleges for work in other fields. After all, what 45-year-old parent wants to go back to school for "retraining"? McCain's war footing could not have helped much, either, in a state where economic concerns rate far higher than the "war on terror" on most voters' list of concerns. This was an audience for whom the surge was clearly not working.

shaun   January 15th, 2008 9:58 pm ET

They voted for him because he seemed desperate to get a win. I guess that's all ya need to be a president nowadays is a good ole hanky and some whining.

brig   January 15th, 2008 9:56 pm ET

Romney is the clear leader in this race -- after 4 elections there have been 2 wins for Mitt, and 2 solid second-place finishes. Nobody else is matching that record. The liberal press plays it down & acts like his campaign is hurting because they don't want to have their Democrat favorites face Mitt in the general election. But they aren't too scared of the other Republicans. A vote for anyone other than Mitt in the primaries is a vote to put a Democrat in the White House in November.
