Norris is hosting a fundraiser for Huckabee at his Texas ranch.

(CNN) — Chuck Norris brought his tough-guy approach to the campaign trail Sunday, taking aim at John McCain's age and suggesting the Arizona senator might not last even a single term.

Norris, an ardent supporter of Mike Huckabee, told reporters he believes serving as president accelerates the aging process 3-to-1.

"If John takes over the presidency at 72 and he ages 3-to-1, how old will he be in four years? Eighty-four years old — and can he handle that kind of pressure in that job?" Norris said, as Huckabee looked on.

"That's why I didn't pick John to support, because I'm just afraid the vice president will wind up taking over his job within that four-year presidency," added the action star.

Huckabee himself avoided offering his own opinion on whether McCain is fit for the presidency, saying "Only John McCain and his hair dresser know for sure."

Norris, who has been at Huckabee's side for weeks as the former Arkansas governor campaigns for the presidency, is hosting a fundraiser for the Republican White House hopeful at his Texas ranch Sunday.

I don't know about his jaw or whether he blinks a lot, but he cannot lift his arms over his head because of treatment he received as a POW.

Huckabee's rejection of the biggest farce in human history (evolution) is an encouragement to me AND I DON'T EVEN SUPPORT HIM!! I hear claims that belief in evolution is widespread and that anyone who believes otherwise loses credibility. Im 21 years old and went to public school. My generation has long been labeled the "secular progressives", however i struggled to find even a few believers in evolution in my high school of over 2500 students. In my mind, anyone who regards something clearly defined as THEORY, as though it were a fact, has the least credibility of all.

My friends, let's not be too hard on Chuck Norris for his idiotic comments… This guy has taken more blows to the head than the Three Stooges

Mechelle   January 21st, 2008 6:33 pm ET

First Huck discriminates against another man's religion.
Then he discriminates against gays.
Then he discriminates against women.
Now he is discriminating against the elderly….
Shame, shame.

Truth, USA   January 21st, 2008 6:11 pm ET

By that same token, if McCain is too old to be President, then you Huckabee are too stupid to be President.

Jr., California   January 21st, 2008 5:53 pm ET

I have a lot of respect for McCain and am not trying to insult him but, what is wrong with his arms, his left jaw, and why does he blink so much? Are these a result of his POW experience? I am just curious.

NFaye   January 21st, 2008 5:24 pm ET

What qualities are most important in a future president? Foremost, he must absolutely defend and protect our constitution. He must be committed to the preservation of our freedom. Next is economic know-how. Without a strong economy, nothing else works. So we need a leader who has experience with today’s global market place. Third, we need a leader who will insist that our laws be enforced, our borders protected, and amnesty will not be given illegals. We need an intelligent leader who is committed to education, research and development, and problem-solving for our energy crisis. We need a man of integrity, one who has personally lived socially conservative values all his life. We need a leader who will restore respect and dignity to the office of president and bring about genuine positive change in Washington. The candidate who best meets these requirements is Mitt Romney. He has my vote!

Maybe McCain should die his hair orange like Chuck to stop the aging process….

Kathy   January 21st, 2008 3:46 pm ET

That's sick and stupid. I know Chuck Norris played an action hero on tv, but McCain played one in the Hanoi Hilton in real life. I can't believe a Hollywood guy is implying McCain isn't tough or vital enough for the job.

Gary   January 21st, 2008 3:41 pm ET

This is the so-called substance -values voters- drool over.

Norris should follow the 'Code of Silence' rather than trying to be 'The Presidents Man'. I don't hear the 'Bells of Innocence' ringing. I only see the 'Silent Rage' of Norris materializing in the form of a pair of 'Sikekicks' trying to prove that Huckabee and him can be 'The Wrecking Crew' to change Washington and become 'Top Dog' of the goverment. All in the name of junking the Constitution for the Bible, threatening the nation that it is 'Hellbound', scaring the Neocons into voting for 'The Contender'… Huckabee, for the Presidency.

We aren't playing 'Dodgeball' here, we are talking about the leader of our nation. A leader to fix the mess which George W. created. Republicans are quick to forget and rush to vote in another fundamentalist. This is 'Invasion U.S.A'. The Constitution is under attack. Our Democracy's very independence is at stake. Don't go 'Lone Wolf McQuade' on the nation.

It is a time for unity, not for separation. Any individual looking for 'Forced Vengeance' need not apply. Warmongers go home.

Now only if these dolts would go 'Missing in Action'. Then we just might be in a happier place.

T-sizzle   January 21st, 2008 3:30 pm ET

Chuck Norris doesn't believe in evolution. He decides which animals live or die.

Chuck   January 21st, 2008 3:24 pm ET

Chuck also went on to say that Obama is too black, Hillary is too female and Romney is too un-christian.

Sam   January 21st, 2008 3:24 pm ET

i don't support McCain to the fullest, but where does Chuck Norris get off insulting him like that? Not even logical, none-the-less political. Stupid comments like that are pushing Huckabee further into the ground than he already was.

And if you're going to make a point, Mary, don't quote an online encyclopedia that can be edited by the public. Though it's reliable for personal reference and more often than not will lead you correctly; even a grade schooler knows you cant cite wikipedia.

NY and FL for Romney   January 21st, 2008 3:21 pm ET

Huck and Chuck….I don't think so!

Romney doesn't need endorsements from corrupt political dealmakers and purchased newspaper editors…he just needs votes from people who support improving our nation, our living standards, our schools, our national security, our government, our image abroad!

Romney 2008-2016 !!

I am a landscaper for a very wealthy gentleman in Orange County, California. He has 5 acres of land and a large house and several fine cars. He told me he made most of his money in the stock market. recently he told me he recently pulled most of his money out of the market because we were headed for a large stock market correction. It appears he was correct. He said he sold almost every stock he owned except for one company called AVASOFT (AVAF)

He told me to put some of my money in this company, helped me open up a stock account and so far it is doing great. Maybe one day I can attain great wealth such as the gentleman I work for…

Chuck…….you would be wise to realize that when you make fun of McCann's age and ability you are really pissing off many, many, many voting senior citizens in this country. You haven't been at the top of your game for many years but I don't hear people making fun of you. You should be ashamed . I always thought such statements about an honorable man such as McCann were beneath you…..but I guess there not.

Lev Klinemann, CA   January 21st, 2008 2:52 pm ET

…and did Huckabee gain a little weight?

I'm not being sarcastic, but if the pressure of the campaign has done that, what will the pressure of the presidency do to him, I' mean I'm talking healthwise, is the vice president going to have to take over.

Lev Klinemann, CA   January 21st, 2008 2:50 pm ET

Chuck Norris is 67?
He looks awsome for 67.
Too bad his wit hasn't kept up with his looks.

Ba Gua Zhang   January 21st, 2008 2:31 pm ET

Just because someone was a war hero, and is proud to be American and served America does NOT mean she or he is a skilled politician. To equate such things
is a fallacy. One needs to look deeper and be more critical of people running for the highest office. One-issue thinking, be it "hero status", "abortion", "one's Iraq war policy", etc. is too simplistica a way to elect someone since the whole situation is much more complex than one-issue approaches.

Alan   January 21st, 2008 2:23 pm ET

Huckabee is descending to the normal depths of a sleazy politician. Voters can make up their own mind about John McCain's age without Huckster Huckabee and his cowboy sidekick trying to inject age discrimination into the mix. That baptist minister is desperate and showing what he's really made of, which is politician first, decent person second.

Bill   January 21st, 2008 2:20 pm ET

Bethy   January 21st, 2008 2:19 pm ET

While deciding who to vote for, I was at a McCain rally in Michigan last week, and a man stood up and said, "I wanted to bring my son here so he could see what a real American hero looked like." McCain teared up and it is obvious he is so proud to be an American and serve the American people. McCain deserves respect, not ageism. Chuck you should be ashamed of yourself.

Having said this, I still LOVE that movie "The Way of the Dragon", that last fight scene was the best I have ever seen.

al t. mich   January 21st, 2008 2:04 pm ET

Lets face it, Mr Norris has his opinion, as we all do. Its our right, and i respect the rights of everyone, this is still America. I am a Viet-Nam vet, and just hope that the correct one is chosen, for the next president to get us back on top, and out of the deep hole that we allways seem to be in. The task will not be easy, the burden will rest upon everyone, as well as the president who-ever he/or she will be. They will need our support reguardless of who gets the job. As for Mr Norris, his record speaks for itself: in my opinion, no-one is better.

Henry Miller, Cary, NC   January 21st, 2008 1:59 pm ET

Chuck Norris is 67–only five years younger than John McCain–and is ought to mature enough to know that this kind of petty smear reflects badly on both him and Huckabee.

(BTW, I'm not a McCain supporter–I'd just like to see a little sense and civility in these campaigns. (What am I saying? This is politics and these are politicians–we're never going to see any sense or civility…))

Jack K., FT Myers, FL   January 21st, 2008 1:25 pm ET

Here's another thought:

Age, and party aren't the issues in the next election. jCentrist social agenda, fiscal conservative values, fairness, steadfastness against yielding to the special interests, and consistency–will be the issues.

John Edwards has "down-home appeal" to millions of Americans–especially to fiscal conservatives who are against the way special interests–conservative and liberal–have hijacked the agenda in Washington.

Those "fiscal conservatives" (Democrat, Independent's, and centrist Republicans) who polls showed favored John Edwards– will not have anyone to vote for if Hillary or Obama get their name on the top of the Democratic ticket–because both of them are pulling in the support of the ultra-liberal wacko's.

If Edwards isn't picked to run for President for the Democrats–those millions of Democrat and crossover votes will probably go to the next most centrist candidate–which will be McCain or Huckabee.

Roya   January 21st, 2008 1:20 pm ET

I am not a McCain supporter at all, but this was absolutely shameless and way below the belt. Of course, Huckabee is the same guy autographing Bibles now, so we shouldn't be too surprised at this.

McCain will split the GOP party vote in the final election, whereby the democrats will win? GOP voters had better get off McCain’s snake oil show and come back to true GOP conservatives candidates or hello President “Billery”!

Devifx   January 21st, 2008 12:54 pm ET

Age has nothing to with it besides, if McCain survived as a POW for something like 6 years for our country the President position would be a walk in the park for him IMO.

Bob, Seattle   January 21st, 2008 12:53 pm ET

I'm for Huck, but this is a dumb approach. After all, Huck's best chance is to be McCain's VP and why drum up a national ad by the dems during the nat'l election saying the same thing and that Huck agrees with it????????????

Very dumb and could easily be a deal breaker ensuring that McCain DOESN'T select Huck as VP running mate.

OH. OH.

Terry, El Paso, TX   January 21st, 2008 12:45 pm ET

Is McCain up to the job of President? As Kinky Friedman said when he was running for Governor of Texas, "How hard can it be? George Bush did it."

The Chuck Norris web site says, "From 1964 to 1968, Chuck won many State, National, and International amateur karate titles. In 1968, Chuck fought and won the World Professional MiddleWeight Karate championships by defeating the World's Top Fighters. He held that title until 1974 when he retired undefeated.
In 1968, Chuck was inducted into the Black Belt Hall of Fame as Fighter of the Year. In 1975, he was inducted as Instructor of the Year and in 1977, Chuck received the honor of Man of the Year."

While Chuck was fighting stunt men, McCain was fighting in Viet Nam. Huckabee, a bit too young for service in Viet Nam, was attending seminary at the time.

I prefer McCain's experience to Huckabee's or Norris's. Actually, a McCain-Huckabee ticket is the Republican Party's only real chance to win this election, especially if there is a third party effort by Blumberg.

McCain is way too old!

Plus the American people want "real" change in Washington and McCain doesn't represent that. He's been in Washington 30 years and hasn't done a darn thing about the economy and immigration. I'm surprised at how many people have forgetten McCain sided with Kennendy just last August regarding amnesty for every illegal immigrant. Oh, now we're to believe he's going do something. Just check out what's been happening to Arizona where he's the governor. Arizona is so over ran by illegals and McCain chooses to look the other direction. Personally, I think the guy will say and do anything to win.

Wake up America and see McCain for what he really is.

I'm voting for Mitt Romney. I believe he's the only candiate the people of America can believe he'll do exactly what he says he'll do. He's the only one that will control government spending and the immigration probelm. Carefully listen to the other candiates. They'll build a fence - then what?

Gil - California   January 21st, 2008 11:24 am ET

I went to Chuck Norris' website and sent a complaint to his comments. On his site he has a statement about why he quit his ranger show, he wanted to go out on top. This is the same reason that he retired from the Karate scene. He basically came out and said he was afraid he would be beaten so retired early rather than take a chance.

Well Chuck, it seems to me you better hurry up and abandon this campaign because even though I like Huckabee as a person, I am not fond of him as my president (Jimmy Carter and W proved that combination doesn't work). At least if you abandon the campaign now you can claim you left while Huckabee was still in contention. If you stick with the campaign to the end, you'll be a proven loser.

BTW, noticed on your website that you are selling your autograph for $100. Guess you don't have to break out your autopen too often at that price, eh?

ROSALIA   January 21st, 2008 11:22 am ET

Mr. Norris who is a very well respected actor and martial arts expert made some valid points as to the aging process of a person who assumes the presidency which really makes sense. Although , Mr. Norris is not God or a doctor who could predict the life span of Sen.McCain if he sits as president , saying he might not even be able to serve his 3-year term.

People dies from different health reasons, and not due to old ages, some dies from conception, upon delivery, young ages, murder ,etc.

Nobody could safely say, not even Mr. Chuch Norris who maybe physically fit due to his fitness regiments, but may he himeself may die all of a sudden due to various reasons: may not wake up, sudden heart stroke and unprecedented accidents.

In other words, his statement does not conform with any statistical basis at all,
nontheless, unqualified to even be sonsidered a viable fact.

Lost in all of the John McCain re-resurrection in South Carolina is the fact that he won 9% less of the vote there this year than he did when he lost to President Bush 8 years ago. Only the multiplicity of serious candidates allowed him to win. As for longevity, McCain is campaigning alongside his 90+ year old mother; where is Huckabee's mom?

Chuck Norris is too old to be kicking the tar our of men 20 years younger than himself. He's too old to be sliding up and down a piece of metal exercise equipment–but by my standards. If he feels able to do these things he should be allowed to. The same is true for McCain. If he feels up to the challenge he should run for president. After all McCain is an honest hero not a make-believe one on TV.
Chuck Norris should just stay out of the fray since he is nothing but a TV actor and a salesman.
Most thinking people I know would prefer any number of candidates over Huckleberry Huckabee, a Baptist minister who had the audacity to suggest we bring the Constitution more in line with the Bible. So much for our nation being religiously tolerant if that were the case.
This is not a Christian Nation. It is a religiously tolerant nation and that is as it should be. IF they want a religious government go to Iran.

I have been saying this all along….

When it comes to age, it is not "discriminatory" to expect your president, supposedly the world's leader, to be able to handle the job physically and mentally.

Some of our state governments require special testing for senior drivers, why not at least some concerns about the age of our president?

If any of the candidates were obese, I will bet that they would not be elected.

Age is another consideration.

Greg in Istanbul   January 21st, 2008 10:01 am ET

Fortunately, Chuck Norris isn't a mathematician. At a 3 to 1 aging ration, Mr. McCain who is 72 now would be 84 in four years, not 80. One can easily understand why someone so astute as Mr. Norris would back Mr. Huckabee. Perhaps if we add up both of their ages, we'd get, with Mr. Norris' ability to calculate, somewhere around ________ Fill in the blank Chuck and Huck!

David Anderson   January 21st, 2008 10:00 am ET

Chuck Norris should know that the forces that want to destroy the candidacy of Mike Huckabee are watching vigilantly for any little careless comment so that they can immediately pounce on to make a mountain out of a molehill. It is a tribute to Huckabee that the unrelenting media campaign against him never stops. The media tell people what to think by appealing to their fears. Too bad some people listen to them instead of looking to see what the facts are. If they did, almost everyone would support Huckabee.

Being a DEM I am not planning on voting for either McCain or Huckabee BUT if I had to choose between the two it would be McCain…Huckabee sounds like an extremest or FAR FAR right winger. While in SC"s primary he campaigned like he was preaching from the pulpit and believe me the right wingers here loved it check out the numbers he came close to taking McCain if he had a couple of more weeks to "preach" (campaign) here I believe he would have won SC. As for McCain's age that is silly he seems to be able to work the crowds just fine.

Yup McCain too old (whatever, more like his values would ruin the country). Huckabee is a religious nut, the kind that would come knocking on your door trying to shove his religion down your throat. Romney, I don't have anything to say except he's no better than Huckabee. (I really want my country ran by people that think like the bin laden's of the world, NOT). I will never comprehend why people actually believe in a book (the bible) that they cannot prove is anything more than a work of fiction. You know what I think? I think that the bible was written to control people and gain power. Cause that is what is happening and it disgusts me. Because the bible is one of the most violent writings I have ever seen. And people pick and choose what they want to agree with in it. If you read the bible all the way through and still believe in it, then quite frankly you should probably be in a mental institution.

Walt, Belton, TX   January 21st, 2008 9:33 am ET

Chuck's just a good guy who's been mislead by a fast talker. Lord knows, we're not talking Fulbright scholarship material here……………….. The Huckleberry is just trying to appeal to folks who don't read.

Dave C - NJ   January 21st, 2008 9:33 am ET

If McCain will be 84 in "political years" then Norris will be 170 in "Hollywood years."

KELLI2L   January 21st, 2008 9:30 am ET

IMO - McCain continues making bad decisions for the American citizens. I don't want another president who is so out of touch with the citizens wants and needs. And I do not want another four (4) years of a mock Bush administration.

Milton, Harrisburg, PA   January 21st, 2008 9:29 am ET

Ah, It's the let's-ram-my-religious-beliefs-down-everyone-else's-throat candidate. Just as the constitution intended. Next time we another Spanish Inquisition, I'll know who to vote for. Until then, I don't think so.

KELLI2L   January 21st, 2008 9:24 am ET

Chuck Norris has expressed his opinion of why he chose not to back/stump for McCain and I agree. IMO (in my opinion) when you chose a presidential candidate (knowing how important this position is and how grueling the pace can be) the American citizens need a person who is qualified and that not only means intelligence, experience, etc., it also means they need to have mental allertness and clarity of thinking. It is a fact that after the age of 30 we go down hill both mentally and physically. McCain is showing too many signs of ageing. Even if some people may want to argue against these facts; if McCain were to die from cancer, the VP would take over, well - who would that be? People voting for McCain NOW have no clue as to who would take over the Presidency in that eventuality and they may not approve of whomever the VP will be.
I would even go as far as to say that there should be an age limit in running for the Presidency.

Katy Hill Prescott Az.   January 21st, 2008 9:20 am ET

Another lousy actor with no credentials running off at the mouth. Huckabee is a joke and an embarrasment. Haven't we gone through 7 years of one of those?

Wade Lewis   January 21st, 2008 9:13 am ET

Lest we forget, Huckabee is an Idiot that does not understand the process of Evolution, or even believe it is real. And Chucky was already killed by Bruce Lee.

I wouldn't give Huckabee another thought just because he relies on his 'religious convictions' to gather a 'flock' of followers. Just ripe for a bird flu pandemic.

Charlie   January 21st, 2008 9:10 am ET

Of all the candidates, Republican and Democrat, John is the only one to have exhibited the mental toughness it takes to get through the tough times. Pressure keeps some going while others to bow up. Carlos is tough, no doubt, but could he have endured what John did for as long as John did. Very cheap shot Chuck!

Chris   January 21st, 2008 9:10 am ET

Good Grief. Huckabee's not even electable - c'mon .. after his "change the constitution to please God" speech?

Get real.

Independent   January 21st, 2008 9:08 am ET

Tis a sad day when Chuck Norris' thoughts on the election are the top headline

Steve   January 21st, 2008 9:07 am ET

Chuck Norris just cost Mr. Huckabee a lot of votes. Not too smart. Maybe he's only smart on tv.

Chris, Jacksonville   January 21st, 2008 9:07 am ET

Huckabee and his crew have no class.

How is he even a serious contender at this point with this garbage?

Do we really care about what a washed-up, D level, former action star thinks about McCain?

"christian"? Civil?

Yeah, right!

BTW: Chuck is 68…..what does that make him too old for? Go back to hawking 2nd rate workout equipment that is manufactured abroad and leave politics to people who have some common sense.

Brad   January 21st, 2008 9:07 am ET

Ok. That's just a cheap shot. And if "Chuck" really chooses his presidential candidate over age, there are bigger issues that need to be taken care of. Republican candidates act like High School Kids trying to be the coolest one on the block, and running our country has nothing to do with how "cool" you are. Give me a democrat or a libritarian any day.

Helen Franklin   January 21st, 2008 9:06 am ET

How nice for Chuck Norris to be available to Huckabee for financial and all other needs but it doesn't tell us whether Huckabee really cares about running for president as much as he cares about having his personal views heard constantly by the American public( a form of preaching???) without actually preaching in a pulpit???

scott   January 21st, 2008 9:05 am ET

I think McCain needs to show chuck how to use that exercise equipment he pushes!

libby   January 21st, 2008 9:03 am ET

I agree with Mike, about the bad dye hair and beard, how about those
capped teeth, they are starling, and so plastic, it is hard to look
at him.
Who cares what he thinks, that over the hill actor, he should
talk, he is a couple of years younger, 67 years. Give us a
break!

Lowcroft   January 21st, 2008 9:01 am ET

Chuck is just concerned McCain isn't sufficiently Christ-like.

Helen Franklin   January 21st, 2008 8:59 am ET

I understand that for Chuck Norris to be helping Huckabee run for office and meet all the financial requirements says a lot about his personal loyalty to the man of his personal choice but it doesn't help others to understand why Huckabee is really running; is it to become the top republican running for office or merely to be able to express his own views about subjects he believes everyone else should hear and believe???

Tony   January 21st, 2008 8:58 am ET

Chuck criticizing someone because of their age???

Manfred   January 21st, 2008 8:57 am ET

If McCain picks Huck abee for his running mate, guess who would benefit if McCain keels over…

James   January 21st, 2008 8:53 am ET

Chuck ought to take a look in the mirror…

Chaunda   January 21st, 2008 8:53 am ET

Do we really need this article twice? Really?

SB   January 21st, 2008 8:52 am ET

Gee-did Chuck Norris "do time" and get beaten in a Vietnamese prison camp?. When it comes to the strength & character of McCain, sounds like CN has no clue; he's simply Hollywood entertainment and should STAY OUT of politics like the rest of Holly"weird"

Dave   January 21st, 2008 8:51 am ET

I'm so tired of these cadidates having others do their dirty work for them.

common sense   January 21st, 2008 8:50 am ET

I don't believe Norris' comments were cheap theatrics in the least bit. The fact is that McCain is 71 years old. Too old to be President. I don't want my country run by the Vice President and his chosen VP, who I din't even vote for, if McCain did unfortunately pass during his term. Norris isn't being dramatic, he's using commen sense.

No Bozos   January 21st, 2008 8:50 am ET

First Bill Clinton and now Chuck. "Hoof in Mouth" season is upon us. McCain's schedule could exhaust someone half his age, yet he's the most energetic of the candidates. If you follow Chuck then Thompson ought to be more energetic than McCain. It's obvious how off base that one is.

Disagree with Mc Cain's stands, but this make Norris and Huckabee look stupid. Genes mattter as well and if you saw Mc Cain's 95 year old mother on stage in S.C., it should be obvious that he has a couple of more good decades in him.

Go back to wherever, Chuck!

BW   January 21st, 2008 8:49 am ET

another hollywood moron using his so called celebrity staus to try to influence weak minded voters ..go back to the gym Chuck your washed up like he is some spring chicken

Blayze Kohime, Columbus OH   January 21st, 2008 8:49 am ET

If that's really the best they can come up with…

Chuck. Stick to what you do best: Infomercials.

Tim, Cincinnati, OH   January 21st, 2008 8:46 am ET

Cheap shot by Norris. At least John McCain believes in evolution and doesn't want to change the Constitution to be more like the Bible.

Boyd Neal   January 21st, 2008 8:44 am ET

Chuck Norris isn't half the man that John McCain is, and I'm not even a supporter of McCain's. Maybe Chuck should try to actually fight in a war, instead of making nonsense movies about them. What a joke.

Mary, Beaver, PA   January 21st, 2008 8:43 am ET

There are too many reasons why McCain should not be the Republican nominee. Age is JUST one of them.

Many people think that McCain has integrity. Or really? He was a member of the Keating Five:

(from Wikipedia) The Keating Five refers to a Congressional scandal related to the collapse of most of the Savings and Loan institutions in the United States in the late 1980s.

Following the deregulation of the banking industry in the 1980s, savings and loan associations were given the flexibility to invest their depositors' funds in commercial real estate. (Previously, they had been restricted to investing in residential real estate.) Many savings and loan associations began making risky investments. As a result, the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, the federal agency that regulates the industry, tried to clamp down on the trend. In so doing, however, the FHLBB clashed with the Reagan administration, whose policy was deregulation of many industries, including the thrift industry. The administration declined to submit budgets to Congress that would request more funding for the FHLBB's regulatory efforts.

In 1989, the Lincoln Savings and Loan Association of Irvine, Calif., collapsed. Lincoln's chairman, Charles H. Keating Jr., was faulted for the thrift's failure. Keating, however, told the House Banking Committee that the FHLBB and its former chief Edwin J. Gray were pursuing a vendetta against him. Gray testified that several U.S. senators had approached him and requested that he ease off on the Lincoln investigation. It came out that these senators had been beneficiaries of $1.3 million (collective total) in campaign contributions from Keating.

This allegation set off a series of investigations by the California government, the United States Department of Justice, and the Senate Ethics Committee. The ethics committee's investigation focused on five senators: Alan Cranston (D-CA); Dennis DeConcini (D-AZ); John Glenn (D-OH); John McCain (R-AZ); and Donald W. Riegle, Jr. (D-MI), who became known as the Keating Five.

Whoever wins the White House better have a tough stomach with all the debacles and fiascos that George W. has left for the next president. The next four years will most likely be a very wild ride - and not good wild. Whoever becomes president is going to have their hands full.

Apparently the world's stock markets are now tanking on fears of a US recession. And they are right to be afraid. Where would Bush's $800 for every taxpayer come from? At a time when programs are being cut left and right because of no money, where that $800 would come from is a very legitimate question.

Valerie   January 21st, 2008 8:37 am ET

Senator McCain's two sons serve our country. As a pilot, John McCain proudly served our nation. It is undeniable that he loves the United States. He respects the rule of law and understands the complexities and dangers of our world.

I, for one, will sleep better at night knowing that President John McCain's steady hand is at the helm.

Let's give him a chance. He's earned it.

scott   January 21st, 2008 8:37 am ET

McCain is not to old! we have a vice president with a bad hart and a senator I think that is in his 90's.

Mike   January 21st, 2008 8:36 am ET

At least John McCain does not try to hide is age like Chuck Norris and his bad dye job hair and beard.

RB, from the bay state   January 21st, 2008 8:36 am ET

Chuck and Huck - Like a couple of carnies in a traveling road show.

Do yourself a favor, Mike. Dump your flannel-shirted clown and show Americans you don't need a over-the-hill action figure dragging your credibility down the drain.

What a sad day when candidates have to resort to cheap theatrics………….

Sensible Cape Coral Fl   January 21st, 2008 8:32 am ET

If the only way Huckabee can win the presidency is with kind of trash talk by Norris, he doesn't deserve to win. We want our president to be capable but we also want him/her to be a NICE person.

York "Budd" Durden, Columbia SC   January 21st, 2008 8:30 am ET

Chuck Norris's opinion and four bucks will get you a latte at Starbucks. Please stop giving this dimwit the spotlight, CNN (and by that I mean the Huckster as well).

cnickthomas   January 21st, 2008 8:25 am ET

If you consider what a terrible president Geo W. Bush has been for this country and he hasn’t even reached that magical age of 70. I guess Bush has sort of lowered the bar for what qualifies one to be President. Everyone just wants someone they'd feel comfortable drinking a beer with. Maybe we should be less concerned about the physical age of a person and more concerned about their mental capacity. The only clue to this is to watch the campaign closely. As it proceeds you'll get a good idea who has the mental and physical fortitude to handle the job of Commander-in-Chief. Bush has embarrassed this country so many times. His begging the Saudi oil ministers for more oil comes recently to mind. We need a leader that realizes what a dangerous world it is when we depend on another country for a finite natural resource. We need a leader with a vision. One who'll lead us out of this mess we've made. Otherwise we are in store for unimaginable misery in the coming years. I'm ready for a break from the politics of old. They haven't gotten us anywhere. The same old promises, the same old problems. Nothing ever changes. Is it any wonder that so many are turned off to politics? The rational among us know that this is what we have. A democratic republic. For better or for worse. We must find a way to move into a new day. Change is the only way forward.

Confused   January 21st, 2008 8:17 am ET

Wow! Where does that leave all those Old Testament leaders.
