MYRTLE BEACH, South Carolina (CNN) - John Edwards is clearly competing for the anti-Clinton vote. The seeming alliance between these two is over. Edwards and Barack Obama are both chasing 'change' voters, and Edwards is trying to gain the upper-hand by echoing Hillary Clinton's criticisms on the Illinois senator's history of voting 'present' in the Illinois state Senate.

Why is it okay for Obama to talk up race and the other twos record and he wiggles flips when he is confronted with his? He never answers. I am no longer in favor of Obama for anything...go Hilary/John 08

Jack   January 23rd, 2008 3:53 pm ET

Rush said today he really likes Obama. I am in the health field and on the road 6-10 per day. I listen to conservative talk the entire time i am driving, and they all push hard for Obam, and attack Hilary over and over again....which makes me know who they want to run against......I'll stick with Hilary/Edwards and stay clear of Obama....and if he should be the Dems choice, then I'll vote for McCain. I am not fooled by the conservatives at pushing him up and Hilary down, so take a good look at who the conservatives are pushing to win the Dems primary.

Thomas Henson   January 22nd, 2008 3:16 am ET

What genius said something about John Edwards having eye problems? You think that's something to make fun of? GEORGE WASHINGTON WAS NEARLY BLIND WHEN HE WAS IN OFFICE, look it up.

Now for a comment that is pertinent. Obama's record of voting "present" is of great importance. NEVER should a representative vote PRESENT. If they are there(as they should be, their yearly work calender isnt exactly long) then they have an obligation to VOTE. If he voted present it just means he is too big of a coward to either oppose or support a hot topic. When a vote is held in the United States Senate, it is NOT a roll call! It is not to see who showed up today! It is to decide MAJOR effects upon the American People! If he doesn't care enough to even VOTE in the senate, how much do you think he'll care if he becomes president? Don't be fools, vote for John Edwards. It is NOT just between obama and clinton, the primaries aren't even over! Remember these polls you see are only a couple thousand people at the most. There are millions and millions of American's eligible to vote!

Marie   January 22nd, 2008 3:00 am ET

Edwards clearly showed who is presidential material tonight - HE IS.

We need to keep in mind that the nomination isn't the prize - the presidential election is. We have to ask who is going to be strongest going up against the Republican candidate.

How can anybody think that Clinton's history and Obama's lack of experience (along with his ties to the mob) are going to really be able to compete and win against a republican? Vote for them and you're handing the country back to the Republicans!

I know - because if Edwards isn't the democratic nominee I'll either be writing him in or voting Republican. There is no way I'm going to have voting for Clinton or Obama on my conscience. Both of them would be disastrous to this country.

EDWARDS is the only real choice - what's wrong with people that they can't see this?

Hoodi - CA   January 22nd, 2008 2:18 am ET

When the sun rises in the sky everyone dose see it. No need to be denial to that fact that obama has won the debate. Folks your opion is just for you and is not gona change the truth. All am asking to be honest to your self!

Is it not obvious to most Americans, and especially the Democratic caucus that the dream team were on stage tonight. Could a tag team of Clinton (president) Edwards (VP) and Obama (S.O.S) actually lose a presidential race. When you put the politics aside, these three are actually very close on all policy issues. They have a great chemistry together which is a massive asset.

America and the world need this team. They reach out in a way not seen for a very long time.

They are right for the time. America and the world needs this team.

Jim Jackson   January 22nd, 2008 1:23 am ET

Why are the candidates of both parties not addressing the oil prices? Do the big oil interests have that much control on the debates and what issues are addressed? What I mean is, I think the real problem in our country and the economy is the greed of the oil companies and interests. They go unregulated and are subsidized. The economy started to falter when the oil prices were left to raise and the oil companies posted billions of dollars of profits. They are draining the life blood out of the middle and lower class. Do you suppose if the oil prices were regulated and dropped to a reasonable rate the other economic problems will take care of them selves?

cjbc   January 22nd, 2008 1:05 am ET

thank you CNN for finally giving Edwards the media attention he deserves. now if only the rest of the media were as intelligent, the american people could really have a chance to have a president for them!

Shari   January 22nd, 2008 12:51 am ET

The best debate yet and Hillary was the decisive winner. She is the most intelligent, qualified and deserves to be the first woman president.
She has it all – now if only the media would get the picture and stand behind her based on her ability!

GaryO Virginia Beach   January 22nd, 2008 12:35 am ET

All of you who are critical of Edwards because he is a lawyer should know this:

All three candidates are lawyers.

GaryO Virginia Beach   January 22nd, 2008 12:33 am ET

All the Democrats are "chasing change voters." Not just Obama and Edwards. The major change Democrats need to concentrate on is getting the Republicans out of the White House. That's a change that Hillary should lead.

I've got to admit though . . . Edwards looked very good tonight.

LB   January 22nd, 2008 12:33 am ET

People need to remember that there is a difference in State and Federal Govt.
In State Govt., Voting "present" is a legislative strategy designed to object certain provisions in a bill that they might otherwise want to support. ie: it gives them a chance to work over the bill and change the parts that they feel needs to be fixed and to take out provisions that have been added to the bill unfairly (things that have nothing to do with the bill itself but snuck in to try to get passed) instead of killing a bill outright. An example would be where Obama felt a certain bill would be in direct violation of the Constitution. Another example would be where Obama voted "present" to bills that were handed out within just a few short hours before it was to be voted on, without allowing legislature proper time to read the lengthly document and form an opinon on it.

Voting present is not a "lack of leadership, or not being able to make a decision, it's quite the opposite, it's taking charge, being responsible and challenging what needs to be challenged in unfair bill practices, and both Edwards and Hillary
know this but they're hoping that the "common citizen" don't. Shame on them.

baseman   January 21st, 2008 11:48 pm ET

Once again Obama refuses to pledge allegience to the flag of the United States of America. There are pictures of this with others on stage and he has his back to the flag ,both hands by his side as the others pledge allegience. Think about this............Is this really who you want to lead the greatest nation in the world. Not me. I fought for that flag and Obama denies it. He wont ever get my vote.

John Edwards is the working mans president. Make it official and elect the man who works for the working man.

Beth   January 21st, 2008 11:37 pm ET

If its Mcain vs Obama, Mcain is going to wipe the floor with him in the debates. John Mcain is sooo tough and we need a strong confident debator. Obama seemed very flustered and at times very arrogant? He talked down to Edwards alot.....
Clinton/Edwards ticket would be awesome!!

EK   January 21st, 2008 10:34 pm ET

It's now or never for Edwards. He has nothing to lose. This is it. He is trying to wedge between Hillary and Obama. Sorry he still won't beat Obama or Hillary.

Why don't we go and count all the "not voted" or " not present" for Hillary and Edwards. They both have as much as Obama.

Akiva   January 21st, 2008 10:16 pm ET

As a Republican I will cross over to vote / support Senator Barack Obama or Senator John Edwards but I will not vote for the tag team of Senator Hillary / President Bill. I am sick of their dirt and lies!! ANY REPUBLICAN WOULD BE BETTER that tag team. A president should be dignified which bush is not and Bill is not far behind!

Hilary quotes -–
I am better
I have been there
I have done that
I am this and I am that
Hilary is attacking others again
I am best prepared on National Security
I am the best.

Obama quotes –

We have to overcome the ... We need to get together. We should never fear ... We should do this all together, WE need to be all one, We should work towards. Dr. King... Getting the power of people together for change.

Allen   January 21st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

As an African=American, I was ashamed to learn that Obama voted "present" 130 times and not vote Up or Down. And to say the reason for this is to signal for negotiations? What happens when the bill pass and his vote is still "present". I just don't understand how he intends to run the country when he can't even take a clear stand on certain issues and simply not vote. At least Hillary and John can admit to their mistakes, but this brother seems to be running from his record and it is clear that he is just not ready to be the first African-American President. We deserve better.

Dontbuyit   January 21st, 2008 9:59 pm ET

We need REAL change! John has been speaking from the heart and will get something done. The republicans WANT Hillary...what does this tell you!! Go John, hang in there man!

Welcome to the Big Leagues Barack .... Hillary and John are staying cool under fire, while you start sweating and cry "foul". I'm not sure if that is the kind of "change" I'd like to see in the White House.

Ryan, they all take money from many sources; it's a fact of political life. None of the candidates are perfect but I believe that in the end, the Democrats have the three best candidates. I am a big picture person and I ignore all the pettiness. By the way, did everyone hear Mitt Romney when he said "Let's not make the Pharmaceutical companies the bad guys"? Talk about being out of touch with reality.

Beans   January 21st, 2008 9:42 pm ET

Edwards, you are done...you'd do best to bow out now graciously. The little vit of the vote you are managing to get is hurting others. Trying to get the anti-Clinton vote? What will that prove...you are done! Be nice and say good-bye graciously.

Murry   January 21st, 2008 9:36 pm ET

Cheers to Edwards for speaking from the heart and being passionate. He's believeable. If he does not win the candidacy, I hope that he supports Obama. Remember that the Republicans are hoping Hillary will win.

Sharon   January 21st, 2008 9:35 pm ET

I think that in the past we have been impressed with candidates who have been successful at spitting out facts. That may be good. However, I think many of us have been disappointed with our elected leaders because they have not been able to deliver on their promises. A good example of this is when Bill Clinton and Hillary promised universal health care during their first term. The most important thing for me is a president who can bring policy makers together and talk about the real issues. Someone who can bring both democrats and republicans together to make tough decisions. I think Obama can do this.

Callie   January 21st, 2008 9:32 pm ET

I am more interested in hearing about what each one of their position is
on global warming. If something is not done about the green house and
atmosphere issues which currently faces our country in 20 or 30 years
we will not have to worry about issues like, poverty, recession, health care,
the war. We will have to worry about climate control, endangered species,
air quality, etc. These are things that can be addressed now. The moderator
is not doing a good job and the questions thus far are abstract and inappropriate.

nashville4obama   January 21st, 2008 9:27 pm ET

brenda,
don't be fooled by the wolf in sheeps clothing, in this case hillary clinton. she is slick and has mastered the "politic speak". she does not have the judgement that obama has. he is smart enough to put the right people around him, not just "yes" men and women around him like she will.

Me   January 21st, 2008 9:26 pm ET

After watching Hillary and Obama (and I do believe he does not take responsibilty for his record), I now believe that Edwards is the candidate for change. He is a breath of fresh air.

POLIDEM   January 21st, 2008 9:25 pm ET

I don't understand "Your comment is awaiting moderation." This is my first time participating. I do feel strongly that Edwards has been shunted in the media and felt the need to support him when he others can see how capable and realistic he is. He has always supported his claim of two Amercas and now we can see his he is correct as we unfortunately go into recession.

Edwards is a terrific man and I believe him to be sincere and passionate about his beliefs. I have often wondered why he doesn't resonate more with voters. By the way I mentione that i am voting for Hillary but Edwards is my second choice and I voted for him in the 2004 NH primary.

Jessica Kademenos   January 21st, 2008 9:23 pm ET

Mark- Hoboken, NJ   January 21st, 2008 9:22 pm ET

Edwards is playing the same game he played in the debate after Iowa. Obama won and he took his side following the win. Now Hillary has won a couple states and my how we see John change his position. The guy knows he's completely out of this race and all he can do is hope one of these two choose him for their VP. It's a pathetic site. Go Obama!

nashville4obama   January 21st, 2008 9:19 pm ET

i agree with charles. there's isn't a thing that will make me EVER vote for hillary. and i voted for bill clinton both times. forget it, they have turned into the "fat cats" that they used to stand against in the early 90's. they are soooo over... yuck!

Bunny   January 21st, 2008 9:19 pm ET

Do Clinton and Edwards not see that Obama possibly has the best handle on how to provide healthcare without bankrupting the government? We need someone who is willing to be fiscally responsible – not someone who is making rash promises just to get a few votes.

Can't Hillary stand on her record without practicing dirty politics and attacking everything the other candidates do? How obnoxious and backbiting she can be!

brenda   January 21st, 2008 9:19 pm ET

Look its becoming clear that the emperor has no clothes! I am an African American who is extremely proud to see a black man in this race, but Obama's muddling and indecisiceness exemplified tonight is exactly why Hillary gets my vote. I think he seeks purity in policy and legislation, and the bottom line is that politics requires a stand...take a stand. I need to understand what these people purport to do that will affect my life and the life of my family.

Kathie in Florida   January 21st, 2008 9:17 pm ET

GO Hillary! Obama has always been able to divert any criticism about his record because the press has given him a pass. Finally, there is a forum for Hillary and Edwards to "call" him on it. Voting "present" over 100 times in the Illinois Legislature is absolutly absurd and indefensible.

Obama's record is so thin and he is so inexperienced that all he has to fall back on is talking about the future.

Hillary is by far the superior candidate for President.

Rachael   January 21st, 2008 9:17 pm ET

Also the healthcare argument is clearly not universal for Clinton, Edwards or Obama if the 12 million illegal citizens are not included. So it was in poor taste for Clinton and Edwards to attack Obama on this issue. It makes more sense to decrease the cost of insurance for everyone then a long winded plan, that didnt even get implemented the 1st time around with the Clintons...so much hot air for this universal healthcare plan that lines the pockets of employers. Its subsidized by insurance companies and employers??? somehow I think that still will fall back on us when insurance companies and employers see a loss in their profits.

Truth   January 21st, 2008 9:16 pm ET

Nate, this was Hillary's point, not Edwards!!!

Citizen   January 21st, 2008 9:16 pm ET

do your research!! many of the "present" votes that clinton cites were made as part of a coordinated strategy with planned parenthood. in new hampshire, clinton used these present votes as a way to try to discredit his stance on abortion. her claims were completely disingenuous, but apparently she was hoping that most of the new hampshire voters were an uninformed and gullible as many people on this board.

Kevin L   January 21st, 2008 9:14 pm ET

Hillary has been attacked by her Democratic rivals and by all the Republican candidates as well and she is hanging tough. Remember that she has the added responsibility of proving that a woman can be "tough enough" to be President.

I don't like the constant bickering but I like her style and she has my vote.

ryan   January 21st, 2008 9:14 pm ET

I live in MA where healthcare is forced upon you just like Obama has said. I would rather have it for FREE like a lot of the rest of the world. Both Edwards and Clinton sound like they are going to force healthcare on us just like Romney did here, screwing the American people over once again...

Mohammad, LA CA   January 21st, 2008 9:14 pm ET

Remember guys, Edwards is consitently attacking Obama he has done nothign to HIllary..yet. This is a sign. I don't think he believes he can win. But he has to stay in the race long enough for Hillary to steamroll over the nomination process and make him her VP. Because its obvious that Hillary/Obama will never happen, unless somehow they can resolve those differences.

A HIllary/Edwards ticket would mean a total loss for us in 2008. Think about it. Obama needs to win. And I hope he picks none of them as his VP running mate.

Tiffany   January 21st, 2008 9:13 pm ET

John Edwards knows that there is no way he will win the Democratic nomination. Look back to 2004. Edwards aligns himself with the strongest candidate at the time. After Iowa, he teamed with Obama against Clinton; now after New Hampshire and Nevada, he's teaming with Clinton against Obama. I thought debates were about the issues?

nashville4obama   January 21st, 2008 9:13 pm ET

edwards is falling right into what hillary wants. he takes votes away from obama. and edwards doesn't stand a chance in the long run. it's the reason hillary is so civil towards him. he's not a threat.

Johnny, NYC   January 21st, 2008 9:12 pm ET

Edwards is clearly winning this debate. Those who don't think that are obviously biased. Clinton is getting destroyed. I've spent the last 6 months soley supporting Obama, however, over the past hour he has done a horrible job in presenting his point of view. I was blown away by his "Present" voting tactics. If he is our president and a bill comes across his desk, he has to pass it or veto it, there is no "Present" voting in the White House!

Peter   January 21st, 2008 9:12 pm ET

Hillary is weak on the issues and only is masking them behind the change + experience idea. How can you be an established washington person and still say you will make change? They need to attack her on that Idea and then force her to work her way to defend each issue.

Nik T, Houston, TX   January 21st, 2008 9:12 pm ET

These are three bright candidates – the best we've had to consider in years. The US would face a more promising future with these individuals at the helm. What I would like to know, from Clinton (Hillary), Obama and Edwards is this:

Given your competencies, given your desires for "change," given your desires for a united country...is there any scenario in which the three of you could/would work together as President, Vice President and Cabinet member? If so, how. If not, why not?

Hillary and Edward prove why they should be president. They have that passion and that drive. Obama is really weak. If he is not reading a speech he really doesn't have much to offer. Rhetoric is good but you've got to have some substance. Barack Obama doesn't offer much of that.

ok, so did obama answer edwards quesiton???? please get him off the stage...he was not ready or prepared for tonight. he is killing himself. stick to speeches not debates. poor man

nashville4obama   January 21st, 2008 9:08 pm ET

hillary is so full of it. i don't see how we are ever going to come together as a party with the continued nasty strategy attacks hillary and her husband keep attacking obama.

Ana   January 21st, 2008 9:08 pm ET

Two white people against one Black. Irrespective of who wins, this country has repeatedly shown the win of emotion over reason. As a die-hard feminist I know Hillary is nothing more than a go getter. No wonder she never left her ever cheating husband.

Vanessa   January 21st, 2008 9:08 pm ET

I am a Obama supporter, but I must say Edwads looks good, rising above the auguments.

Bill-Virginia   January 21st, 2008 9:08 pm ET

Has Barack ever served in the military?

ds   January 21st, 2008 9:07 pm ET

Obama needs to stay calm. He is coming across defensive. Hilary is doing well answering the questions. John is sticking to the issues. They all need to stick to the issues. The bickering is negatively affecting my vote for Obama and Hilary.

Malik Smith   January 21st, 2008 9:07 pm ET

It's a smart tactic but very risky.

Betsy   January 21st, 2008 9:07 pm ET

I agree all candidates want a universal health care, end to the war, need fiscal reform. Where are we, the candidates and Wolf on the trillon dollar deficit? Am I missing something when that has a direct effect on the economy.

cris   January 21st, 2008 9:07 pm ET

Obama refuses to make a valid stand on anything, when he answers he chases rabbits. Be honest...stand for something right or wrong. Stop repeating everything the other 2 are saying.

JB   January 21st, 2008 9:07 pm ET

Edwards is over. The Hillary/Obama feud will not get so messy that Edwards will be able to pick up the pieces. Edwards can't win South Carolina (no one votes for Edwards in the Carolinas), and third isn't helpful. Hillary and Obama will lock up 80% of the vote, and the call will be on for Edwards to MoveOn. VP Edwards? Hill doesn't need another pretty boy from the South, and Obama needs someone with more experience. For Edwards, there is always 2012. And 2016, and 2020, and ....

Rockaway   January 21st, 2008 9:07 pm ET

He just needs to get one off their mark for him to move up. I don't think it will work.

Dave   January 21st, 2008 9:07 pm ET

Tonight, Hillary Clinton has lost any chance of receiving my vote in the general election. That's a hard conclusion for a democrat/liberal to come to, but I am tired of the negativity and half-truths. Hillary is the win-at-all-costs candidate.

Old Smuggler   January 21st, 2008 9:07 pm ET

wolf blitzer is taking a bigger clubbing than obama. i think letting these circus freaks show their true colors is the right thing to do. they all care much more about getting elected than any of their own opinions.

Adam   January 21st, 2008 9:07 pm ET

it is so unfortunate the DEM's have to engage in bashing each other. In the onset the Democrats should have remained focused and positive especially with each other as the GOAL of the the Democratic party, which includes all of them should have been to capture the whitehouse in 08.

so much for a Clinton/Obama ticket but

christy taylor   January 21st, 2008 9:07 pm ET

After watching the debates, I am very impressed with John Edwards, though shocked he turned on his seeming alliance with Obama. I do admire his character and think his different viewpoints on the economy stand on its own. I have a new respect for John Edwards. He also admitted there is a discrepencay for African Americans in this society, which is becoming evident. I am tird of the squabbling bt Clinton and Obama. Maybe Edwards will emerge from this with a newfound respect from those of us that are undecided. If only people would look beyond color and gender and make an informed decision on the issues and the candidates answers. I want Edwards in this and am curious to see what else there is to say. He definetely is not to be left out...

Shannon   January 21st, 2008 9:07 pm ET

Clinton/Edwards 08"

This is the first time Edwards really has shined.

Obama is totally out for me, he has the nice face and talk but he does not know where he stands or what he firmly believes.

cindy   January 21st, 2008 9:06 pm ET

This is the first debate that Obama is on his own and he is not doing well. Their will no other democrats to take the heat for him if he gets the nomination. It is hard to imagine that the Republicans won't easily out debate him.

mjo   January 21st, 2008 9:06 pm ET

I SECOND CLINTON/EDWARD 2008. LET'S GO FOR IT.

michael   January 21st, 2008 9:06 pm ET

Canadian pay ou of there noses in payroll taxes for Universal healthcare. She should adopt Obama approach of Mandatory Childrens Healthcare... and optional for adults.

andrewl   January 21st, 2008 9:06 pm ET

"Please show me how she is going to pay for this national health care…."

We came up with , what 400 Billion for the "war on terror" . I think it is a viable option to have national health care.

r   January 21st, 2008 9:06 pm ET

Clinton is horrible. Hope she does not win. We will be in the same boat called Bush's legacy if Clinton wins ....

Obama is an honest man and he is down to earth and he understands the common man.

JM   January 21st, 2008 9:06 pm ET

Obama is showing some serious vulnerabilities to me tonight. I was behind Obama, but I really like what I'm seeing/hearing from Edwards. He's speaking with substance instead of just fire. Hillary, while smart, will have a very difficult time uniting the sides in D.C. I think she could end up being just as devisive, if not more, than Bush. Many just don't like her, and I just get a feeling that she isn't genuine.

Jason IL   January 21st, 2008 9:06 pm ET

How come Hilary never gives straight answers? Obama doesn't either. I want to see straight answers. Stop questions each others votes for certain bills. Give the american people hard facts on each bill you want to pass if elected. Stop this bickering between each other.

Al   January 21st, 2008 9:06 pm ET

Edwards is above the squabble and is impressing me tonight.

Steve   January 21st, 2008 9:06 pm ET

Edwards has looked better in the last 30 minutes than he has in the past 30 days

andrew   January 21st, 2008 9:06 pm ET

Obama is a fraud, Edwards and Clinton are exposing him for what he is: A kind man who is not ready to be President!

paul   January 21st, 2008 9:05 pm ET

what caramel.yogini fails to understand (its like no-fault insurance) we all pay for those who opt not to carry insurance

Mimi   January 21st, 2008 9:05 pm ET

I'm not anti-Edwards, I'm not anti any Democrat, but John Edwards is coming off well tonight in great part because he's on the sidelines. Obama may not be at his best, but he's fending off some rather nasty blows from both sides. Clinton didn't come off so well in the last debate before the Iowa caucus for exactly the same reason. But I will say this for Edwards: he's truly proving just how powerful it is – for all the candidates – to stay aligned with a shared message. Too bad neither Clinton nor Obama have taken that tack.

marie SC   January 21st, 2008 9:05 pm ET

Edwards is not being given the same amount of time as the others

Mike M   January 21st, 2008 9:05 pm ET

To suggest a Hilary/Edwards or Obama/Edwards ticket is a little absurd. The Vice-President nominee will be Bill Richardson.

Zsar   January 21st, 2008 9:05 pm ET

Hillary clearly is throwing it all out!! WOW!! She is definitely what we need. What this country needs. Someone that can fight for what's right. Someone that's smart and know how to run the huge bureaucracy that is the Federal Government.

Brittany Raffa and Andrea Sanguineti   January 21st, 2008 9:05 pm ET

Barack is going in circles and often does not answer the question by changing the subject. Hilary is strong, although sometimes she suffers from the strikes by Barack. Edwards began by playing the game of the friendly bystander, but now he is taking advantage of the friction between the other two by giving concrete answers to the questions. Hopefully, Hilary and Barack will start getting to the point.

mjo   January 21st, 2008 9:05 pm ET

GO GIRL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She is our ONLY HOPE.

Carol, TX   January 21st, 2008 9:05 pm ET

Obama/Edwards '08

Hillary is on the attack too much and turning me off even more than before!

Ed   January 21st, 2008 9:05 pm ET

I'm excited to see that Sen. Obama is taking swings at Sen. Clinton. He's been on the sidelines way too long, it's nice to see him show some emotion and get ticked off with the Clinton and Clinton camp. We need new faces with new ideas in Washington – no more Bush, no more Clinton!

md   January 21st, 2008 9:04 pm ET

Clinton/Edwards '08

Obama doesn't know which way is up; Hillary and John keep calling him out on his inexperience mistakes

Ade   January 21st, 2008 9:04 pm ET

I am tired of Obama's cries, he's weak on the issues. Hillary 08

Neil   January 21st, 2008 9:04 pm ET

Hillary has learned from the Karl Rove school of debating. Twist the nuances.

michael   January 21st, 2008 9:04 pm ET

McCain is going to steamroll over however is the Democratic Candidate.

sharon in maine   January 21st, 2008 9:04 pm ET

Now we are on the war – this should be interesting as they are all pretty much on the same ground. Think they can find something to fight about?

Kevin Liston   January 21st, 2008 9:04 pm ET

Wow! What a knife fight! Both candidates are slugging it out but I have to say that if I'm ever in trouble in a back alley..I want Hillary there with me.

Atticus   January 21st, 2008 9:04 pm ET

None of these candidates appears presidential. However,Obama can do so. Hillary really looks mad. She seems indignat that Obama has made such a strong effort to be president and take "her job".

al   January 21st, 2008 9:04 pm ET

what a heated debate it ' good for the voters to know where they stand .However senator Clinton and senator Edwards are pilling on senator Obama.

scott   January 21st, 2008 9:03 pm ET

Obama is the only one to go out on a limb for change, remember this is a debate, these are only ideas, Obama has the most open mind for change and thats what will make anything work...like health care, or the economy

Dana   January 21st, 2008 9:03 pm ET

Obama can't answer a question no matter what the question is ... he's lost my vote

Robert OH   January 21st, 2008 9:03 pm ET

BY THE WAY, I'M A POOR, WORKING, BLACK PERSON!

Amy   January 21st, 2008 9:03 pm ET

What has Obama REALLY said that we should buy into? I agree that he has no substance or plan...he just speaks about what people want to hear and rallies people, but has no plan for implementation. Hillary makes me feel like she could get into office and know what she's doing..

Sandy   January 21st, 2008 9:03 pm ET

Obama is floundering all over the issues.

Ryan M.   January 21st, 2008 9:03 pm ET

The truce with Obama v. Edwards never brought benefit.... In fact, Hillary benefitted from the gender issue, because it appeared men ganging up on her....

This is good for Barack Obama.

ac   January 21st, 2008 9:02 pm ET

Wolf needs to step up to his responsibility as a media member and stop being blinded by the celebrity of the candidates. Let us hear the candidate's belief and not the mug slinging. TAKE CONTROL!

Frank   January 21st, 2008 9:02 pm ET

John Edwards seems to be the babysitter up there. He's the one who is stepping into every question and inserting policy debate in between the personal attacks between Clinton and Obama.

John F.   January 21st, 2008 9:02 pm ET

Everytime someone other than Hillary makes a comment, she snickers, laughs, smirks, shakes her head or makes some sort of face. She needs to grow up and realize other people make good points and have valid opinions. She's coming across as a pompous and cocky politician.

Becky   January 21st, 2008 9:02 pm ET

It is interesting to see Clinton and Edwards attack Obama literaly from both sides. He (Edwards) and Clinton would make great running mates for the republicans to defeat again. It is too bad that democrats might not make the most of this opportunity to take the white house.

j.l.   January 21st, 2008 9:02 pm ET

I believe that Hillary says what people want to hear. She learned a LOT from her husband (one of THE best liars to be President).

Siobhan   January 21st, 2008 9:02 pm ET

Hillary has her shrill problem tonight.

Robert OH   January 21st, 2008 9:02 pm ET

POOR BLACK PEOPLE MAKING MIN. WAGE WILL NOT PURCHASE HEALTH CARE NO MATTER WHAT IT COST, (EVEN IF IT'S $5) UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE SHOULD BE AFFORDABLE FOR ALL AND MANDATED.

Matt   January 21st, 2008 9:02 pm ET

Its the truth – there is no ganging up – it would have been nice if he would have given a legit answer as to why he rode the fence so many times – its about time Edwards realized too that Obama's record is non-existent.

Ed   January 21st, 2008 9:02 pm ET

The country will not put a Clinton back in the White House. If Democrats want to lose in November, then all they have to is nominate Clinton.

Amirage   January 21st, 2008 9:02 pm ET

I have never been much of an Edwards fan, but while watching him now in this debate is starting to change my mind!

Donald   January 21st, 2008 9:02 pm ET

true

Myr   January 21st, 2008 9:02 pm ET

John Edwards has a nice strategy... he is setting himself for running mate be it Hillary or Barack in the front.

sharon in maine   January 21st, 2008 9:02 pm ET

cj – there is no way to really redeem the media in politics.

Amber   January 21st, 2008 9:02 pm ET

did anyone just hear Obama say "mass-uh-TOO-setts?" bahaha. i thought there was a "choo" in there. if he's gonna be president, know your states.

Dan   January 21st, 2008 9:01 pm ET

Moderators need to take over... GEESH! - Now Hilary is joining with Edwards!? LETS MOVE ON!!

Shaun in Ca   January 21st, 2008 9:01 pm ET

It makes sense doesn't it? Edwards and Clinton are echoing on what is truth, Obama lacks the exeprience to guide this great country...Go Hillary!

marky   January 21st, 2008 9:01 pm ET

OMG, what is going on with Barack? he keeps getting himself into corners I hope there is a break so he can regain his composure.

Arizona for Hillary   January 21st, 2008 9:01 pm ET

Clinton/Edwards in 08!

Mark- Hoboken, NJ   January 21st, 2008 9:01 pm ET

If Clinton wins the nomination, America will vote for McCain

Julie   January 21st, 2008 9:01 pm ET

I wish these candidates would stop talking about what the other guy did or didn't do and just talk about what they would do as president.

Mark- Hoboken, NJ   January 21st, 2008 9:01 pm ET

Hillary is getting smoked. She's backing up on every point. Barack's got her in the corner.

Sadeeq Sada   January 21st, 2008 9:00 pm ET

I strongly believe that Obama is losing his cool and Senator Clinton is capitalising on that...he needs to keep his cool and stick to the issues!!!

Nancy   January 21st, 2008 9:00 pm ET

Obama's words are great, but he does not live up to them. Go HIlary!

martie   January 21st, 2008 9:00 pm ET

Edwards knows he's hanging on by a thread....he's just trying to stay in this race

Sylvia   January 21st, 2008 9:00 pm ET

WEAK obama, you can't take the attacks so you can't handle the presidency

Ryan   January 21st, 2008 9:00 pm ET

Hillary is really starting to aggravate me.

Amy   January 21st, 2008 9:00 pm ET

Obama seems flustered. If he is flustered b/c someone disagrees with him, how can he be an effective president? He just doesn't come off as very presidential. Hillary is at least talking about her plans while Obama is just defending himself. She shows true passion and is a great speaker. Obama is not a good speaker.

Amber   January 21st, 2008 8:59 pm ET

Why wouldn't everyone want healthcare??

Jude   January 21st, 2008 8:59 pm ET

Edwards can not stand on his own. He can't speak for himself so why would I vote for him. Get rid of OBAMA and vote for Hillary.

Sprite   January 21st, 2008 8:59 pm ET

I had hoped to see Edwards as a running-mate, but I don't think any of the three can stomach the other. I just hope everyone can pull together for the winner. As bad these candidates seem sometimes, they are, ALL OF THEM, better than the GOP offering.

Maurice   January 21st, 2008 8:59 pm ET

Hillary again shows her mastery on the issues. Barack is just rhetoric and no substance.

Eric   January 21st, 2008 8:59 pm ET

Obama is hurting right now, his patience is running thin and he looks like its taking a toll on him. Edwards is right to question his plan. This is America's health at risk.

adam   January 21st, 2008 8:59 pm ET

Does Anyone think that Edwards may be taking votes fromHillary now?

cj   January 21st, 2008 8:59 pm ET

i am really disappointed in wolfs moderator abilities- and I hope that the post debate analysis can redeem the media and cnn in this MESS

Columbia Jim   January 21st, 2008 8:59 pm ET

Obama talks a good game, but has no foundation. He says what people want to hear. He's getting tag-teamed by HC and JE and has nowhere to turn.

Josh   January 21st, 2008 8:59 pm ET

It's obvious that Edwards is making a move to be the next Clinton "whipping boy" I mean VP....

The truth is this....If the democratic party wants to win the next election they have to nominate a person who will not divide the nation...

Yes, there are many people that love Hillary and the Clinton Machine...BUT there are just as many people who hate Hillary and the machine that she represents...

If Clinton wins the nomination then John McCain will get my vote...

j.l.   January 21st, 2008 8:59 pm ET

Obama answered repeatedly why he voted 'present'. If he doesn't feel confident about an issue –which has lots of attached stigma–he wold have voted yes or no.

It's not rocket science, and it just showed John Edwards is just as conniving as Hillary Clinton, and will nit-pick every single issue the moment Obama responds to Hilary.

mickey   January 21st, 2008 8:59 pm ET

Edwards doesn't look as bad as the other two because he never gets a chance to speak

Mary   January 21st, 2008 8:58 pm ET

Bill, I am wondering if the opposite is true: Edwards realizes that Hillary will be the next president and he wants to be sure he is somewhere on the ship of state!! I am a Hillary fan but Edwards is really ON tonight.

Sheree   January 21st, 2008 8:58 pm ET

Yes, however, Obama's reason for his "present" vote makes sense, so it's a non-issue. They need to stop bringing it up.

Ed   January 21st, 2008 8:58 pm ET

Edwards has to win in South Carolina.

Maria   January 21st, 2008 8:58 pm ET

Edwards is remaining calm and has found his voice.
Obama is fumbling the offense
& Hillary is being forceful but uneffective.

MB   January 21st, 2008 8:58 pm ET

Can Wolf get Obama to answer a question? What is the role of this moderator?

Come on CNN - get real answers from the candidates. Are you still there?

Cindy W   January 21st, 2008 8:58 pm ET

Edwards is making me take a second look at him. He seems to be the only one on stage that knows what integrity means

Mike N   January 21st, 2008 8:58 pm ET

Edwards is looking to play a King maker role in the conventions and he may end up in that role given how he is positioning himself as an alternative to all the squabbles happening between Obama and Hillary. Even though, he may end up as the candidate with the least delegates among the three, he may end up with enough delegates to force concessions on important policy matters, or better still, end up as a Vice Presidential candidate.

clc   January 21st, 2008 8:58 pm ET

Just curious. This is my first time blogging on the CNN blog. Why are my posts "awaiting moderation"? It's been at least 4 minutes for some. Should I register somewhere or something? What gives here?

jeff   January 21st, 2008 8:58 pm ET

three stooges live again

Brian   January 21st, 2008 8:58 pm ET

There are plenty of sports that show punching, boxing, wrestling, etc. Can we stop playing politics and actually talk about what these candidates are going to do to solve the problems that we are facing? Put walls up between the candidates if you have to, but have them talk about what they will do, not what their opponents won't do. Let the voters decide.

caramel.yogini   January 21st, 2008 8:58 pm ET

I disagree with Hillary and John that healthcare has to be mandated. It should be universally available and affordable but if for some reason someone doesn't want healthcare then they shouldn't be forced to get it. Afterall, this is still America right? Although I'm hopeful for a Democratic President that doesn't mean I want the government to tell me what to do and how to do it.

Dan   January 21st, 2008 8:58 pm ET

Edwards is the smart choice for president...

Natasha R   January 21st, 2008 8:58 pm ET

I believe that the alliance is still there between Hillary and Edwards, but to survive this debate, you have to stick to your own beliefs! GO HILLARY!

Nicole   January 21st, 2008 8:58 pm ET

If this is the more 'structured' hour of the debate I don't think I can watch the second half.....Wolf needs to take control

scott   January 21st, 2008 8:58 pm ET

i wish Obama would answer the questions. he goes off topic on everything. If I didnt know better I would thing Clinton and Edwards have a trouce and fire on Obama.lol

Everytime Obama talks I become more and more uncertain on voting for him. I may just not..

Ed   January 21st, 2008 8:58 pm ET

Edwards is the working people's candidate in this election.

Wayne   January 21st, 2008 8:57 pm ET

Edwards needs to get a grip, he is NOT going to win, give up and support Obama. Stop trying to spoil the race!

Kevin   January 21st, 2008 8:57 pm ET

John is being his lawyer self in this debate and attacking the facts and sticking to the issues and speaking with fantastic rhetoric as opposed to Obama....He needs more exposure though!!!!! Give him more airtime CNN!!!!

Jack   January 21st, 2008 8:57 pm ET

Obama seems a little threatened by him too...he keeps trying to, passive-aggressively, remind Edwards that he is the "other guy"

Amber   January 21st, 2008 8:57 pm ET

John's my hero.

Gerry   January 21st, 2008 8:57 pm ET

We don't need a Prez who's made a career out of chasing ambulances.

beasleybrother1   January 21st, 2008 8:57 pm ET

I agree with Bill. Edwards is going for VP Again!

Jen   January 21st, 2008 8:57 pm ET

Does anyone else notice that Obama talks to Edwards like he's a child..."Now John.."
Obama is arrogant!

Allen   January 21st, 2008 8:57 pm ET

Yeah – this diatribe between Edwards and Obama seemed like it really surprised obama.

Sean   January 21st, 2008 8:57 pm ET

Big insurance and big pharmacy companies support Clinton and Obama.
The people should support Edwards.

ally   January 21st, 2008 8:57 pm ET

not a wise choice on edwards's part. he was much stronger when he sided more or less with obama.

Kevin,FL   January 21st, 2008 8:57 pm ET

OBAMA IS LOOKING WEAK.. HES A FRESHMAN..IN THESE KINDA THINGS.. CLINTON GAVE HIM A WHOOPIN' AND HIS RESPONSE TO CRITICISM IS BAD! HE BREAKS AND CRACKS.. I DONT SOME ONE LIKE HIM IN THE OVAL OFFICE.. CLINTON 08

Harold   January 21st, 2008 8:56 pm ET

Edwards knows he's just drawing votes from Hillary and will problem leave the race after this week.

Mohammad, LA CA   January 21st, 2008 8:56 pm ET

In my opinion, Edwards is looking to be Clinton's vice president, and they have both ganged up on Obama.

But Obama's winning- I am not a supporter of him, but he is doing well against them.

Duop Chak, Colorado Springs, CO   January 21st, 2008 8:56 pm ET

John Edwards is doing great.

adam   January 21st, 2008 8:56 pm ET

Drug Lobbyists... Why is Edwards twisting this. He was doing well before that.

boynla, LA, CA   January 21st, 2008 8:56 pm ET

finally, somebody (besides the clintons) is calling Obama to task for something, anything! go edwards!

Bill   January 21st, 2008 8:56 pm ET

As far as this topic... I think John was right on track. If you think the bill needs some slight changes... then it either is passable or not. Vote Yay or Nay!

magda   January 21st, 2008 8:56 pm ET

obama is sooooo weak

Aron in South Carolina   January 21st, 2008 8:56 pm ET

I am seeing Barack Obama on the defensive in the recent minutes of the debate, and although he is not losing his cool, he is not fending off blows very well. The eventual candidate must defend his/her previous record in the general election, and Obama is not defending his record very well.

patrick   January 21st, 2008 8:56 pm ET

lets just hope he doesnt get caught up in the squabbling, Go Edwards in SC!

Russ   January 21st, 2008 8:56 pm ET

John Edwards deserves all the Clinton's votes...he is by far the best. He doesn't get into all the bickering that Hillary initiates.

Robert in Albuquerque   January 21st, 2008 8:56 pm ET

Edwards is going after Clinton and Obama for the "Free Press" he needs his name in the headlines and this might be a good way at doing it.

Fact is, he's done. Unless he's a VP , he's fully cooked and ready to be pulled.

Cecile   January 21st, 2008 8:56 pm ET

Agree. It' s what's going on. And Obama doesn't respond well.

Ken from ColSpgs   January 21st, 2008 8:56 pm ET

Watching Edwards.. was wondering if he has an issue with his eyes.. He is blinking an awful lot..

But it looks like he is ganging up with Hilary on Obama.

Tag team – hmm.. could we be looking at a Hilary / Edwards ticket?

Aaron   January 21st, 2008 8:56 pm ET

Edwards looks way too smug...

clc   January 21st, 2008 8:56 pm ET

Interesting, isn't it? Two's company, three's a crowd, so he has to choose someone, right? I think an Obama/Edwards ticket would be absolutely awesome!

Drew   January 21st, 2008 8:56 pm ET

Good for Edwards. Obama always has an EXCUSE for why he made a certain vote, or had a political stance. You can't have it both ways and criticize others...

David Adkins   January 21st, 2008 8:56 pm ET

Please show me how she is going to pay for this national health care....

Mark   January 21st, 2008 8:55 pm ET

This is Edwards night.

Nate   January 21st, 2008 8:55 pm ET

I'm an Obama fan, but Edwards's point is valid. If one is going to cherry-pick and criticize another's vote, they should expected for the same return-fire.

Mike   January 21st, 2008 8:55 pm ET

Edwards don't follow that path. You have them both right where you want them, let them fight it out, and take South Carolina with a clean record.
