Clinton, Obama, and Edwards paused for photos prior to beginning Monday's debate.

MYRTLE BEACH, South Carolina (CNN) – Here's what the candidates need to do tonight:

Clinton:
Hillary Clinton needs to talk about delivering the goods tonight to stay competitive in the state. Her economic message is one that should resonate well with African-American voters who make up half the state's Democratic voters. Look for her to stress bread and butter issues.

Obama: Obama needs to look and sound like a president, and remind voters he isn't a racial candidate. He doesn't need to remind voters he's black. His support in the African-American community is largely rooted in the fact he isn't running as a black candidate.

Edwards:
He needs to remind people he's still here and that he won the state four years ago. His convincing win in the state seems all but forgotten. The South Carolina native needs to reassert his 'favorite' son status.

Wish Barack had turned things around to take the focus off her and onto the issues. That said, I think he gave good answers to her accusations and made her look petty and whiney when she kept at him. I think Barack shows he would be better as the nation's leader, both on domestic and internatonal issues, because he's firm, persistant, sincere, and displays high integrity. There's something untrustworthy and backbiting about Hillary that turns me off. If there are really things we should know about her opponents then she should get her facts straight. Lying only confuses voters . And as much as I like John Edwards I'm afraid he's lagging behind and has become a fifth wheel.

I'm a Federal employee born and raised in SC working in Ohio. I watched the debate tonight in Myrtle Beach, SC. I couldn't believe the stupid question Wolf Blitzer asked about whether Bill Clinton was the first black president. Unless he was born with black skin on his body and bleached white like Michael Jackson, no he was not and never will be the first black president. How about asking what can be done right now about the high gas prices and the profits these oil companies are making? How about asking how Hillary Clinton is going to deal with the foreign leaders if she becomes president when they don't respect less more will speak with her because she is a women? Everyone needs to keep in mine that Hillary is running for president not Bill Clinton.

Barack hasn't reminded voters that he's black. It's obvious. But more importantly he must continue to sound like a president that will unite the American people, ALL PEOPLE. And he has done that better than any other candidate. While I do agree that candidate records need to be revealed....distortions suggest fear and intimidation. If you are going to speak to Obama's message of the republicans' ideas and Reagan having ideas, then yes, quote what the candidate said. Do not distort the truth of what Obama said and then change your position on what he said to being being totally sure of what he said. He never said he agreed with Reagan's ideas or politics. Don't automatically assume that because he voted present on a small percentage of the votes in the senate that it was because he was playing politics and didn't want to take a stand. I believe Obama did have technical difficulties with certain bills and that is the way the Illinois State Senate works. Remember this was the senator that opposed the war when it was unpopular to do so. The other thing is that Hillary looks for opportunities to attack Barack...fair only if she would get the facts straight and not distort facts, etc. But the other point is this...a question of real leadership and trustworthiness...."Why does Hillary and her campaign...continue to have to apologize to Barack"? Her ego gets ahead of her and she is about herself and not the American people first. My opinion based on facts.

Hillary is most qualified to take on the myriad range of problems facing america today. she will surround herself with a diverse cabinet and not retreads....her experience will not suffer from "on the job training" .

Jack   January 21st, 2008 9:53 pm ET

It seems that they have toned it down on the race card. Thank God. I loved the thought of Bill Clinton being the first Black President(The blacks loved him)

max shirry   January 21st, 2008 9:42 pm ET

Senator Clinton just took the words out of my mouth:"Right has no gender and the truthh has no color". That was so timely because if she would just continue to remind the nation and the people of South Carolina that their vote this year should be for the most capable and viable candidate and that their vote shoud no tbe rendered based on emtotion.
On the other hand, Senator Obama came acrpss to be the likable, thoughtful and articulate politician that he is when he tackled the question aboutthe former President Bill Clinton being depicted as the First Black President; his body language and some double speak revealed a lot of contempt to the former president. Senator Obama needs to get over that hump if he plans to stay in the race...Obama needs to articulate his agenda, his knowledge, skills and abilities.

derry   January 21st, 2008 9:36 pm ET

She is brilliant..... Competition is good , it brings out the best in you.

Obama speaks about problems with race only. How "bout problems with WOMEN?????? wHAT about me??

George Bush   January 21st, 2008 9:35 pm ET

Where is the only viable candidate that voted against my war? Maybe a water boarding treatment would help keep him quiet. Not sure if my patriot act included a gag order on him, but it might have, I didn't read it.

Shelly   January 21st, 2008 9:27 pm ET

Obama needs to look and sound like a president!?!
I do not think crying and running arround saying I my hubby was president therefore I have experience please vote for me, is very presidential.
Listen to this man speak. He sounds like a Kennedy, the Kennedy's that we have immortalized my friend!

robert   January 21st, 2008 9:25 pm ET

Honestly, it is painful to watch this debate. It is clear that either candidate would make a great president, but I don't think they know that. this is not the time to degrate each other, now is the time for them to show the american people that they on the same team and start talking about real issues.

Peg   January 21st, 2008 9:25 pm ET

talk about the issues.. with details...

as Hillary has been doing.

PUT IT ALL out there and compare the candidates.. They want to forget that she HAS
been out there ... as they canno t compare.

SHE IS the one who can help EVERYONE!!!
She is standing up to teh world now.. and not crumbling.. that is the kind of person we need in charge of this country who can deal with the world!!!!

Harry   January 21st, 2008 9:16 pm ET

Are the candidates nuts? Is the media nuts?

Do you think we enjoy this yada yada yada: you said this, but you said that. Good grief.

Look how much more time could be given to substantive issues. Give them all an UNINTERRUPTED three or four minutes for each question and let them lay it out without being hurried: economy, health care, social security, Iraq and so on.

Wolf and others, stop trying to initiate a school yard brawl between/among candidates.

Elaine MA   January 21st, 2008 9:15 pm ET

Right on Christine Malloy....Obama has been the golden boy.....Obama gets away with addressing Sen. Clinton ,,,,,,as She said this and She said that....Obama needs to grow up....Obama is not mature enough .....The Media's been endorsing Obama......The Country's is watching this Media event unfold.......GO SEN.CLINTON......hip...hip......hurrah!!!!

WILEY721   January 21st, 2008 9:10 pm ET

VOTE FOR HILLARY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IF YOU WANT REASONABLE CHANGE!!!!!!!!!!!

WILEY721   January 21st, 2008 9:05 pm ET

ONE THING THAT HAS BEEN TALKED ABOUT IS PAYDAY LOAN COMPANIES. I WORKED IN THAT INDUSTRY FOR 2 YEARS. I HAVE WORKED IN OTHER INDUSTRIES . THESE PAYDAY LOAN COMPANYS CLASS B LOANS IS THE MOST STRESSFULL JOB YOU COULD HAVE. THIS INDUSTRY MAKES ME SICK AT MY STOMACH. THEY BEG YOU TO BORROW MONEY. THIS IS THE MOST MORALLY WRONG INDUSTRY I HAVE EVER SEEN ,SOME PEOPLE ARE PAYING 80% INTEREST RATES. I HAVE SEEN PEOPLE WHO COULD NOT PAY FOR HEART MEDICATION. THATS MORALLY WRONG AND A HEARLESS JOB IT IS LEGALIZED LOAN SHARKING. THIS IS ONE INDUSTRY THAT NEEDS TO BE BETTER LAWS AND STIPULATIONS AS CLASS A BANKS AND CREDIT UNIONS HAVE ON THEM. Here she goes again, just more mud-slinging. I'm sick of it. As far as Obama not being as "polished" as professional polititicians... GOOD FOR HIM!!! Haven't we had enought of broken promises from these power-players? I believe Obama is bright enough and open enough to get the best people, from all views, on his team. I would rather back someone with this attitude, than someone who thinks they have all the answers and don't need any other input.

VOTE FOR EDWARDS-----------------------

Dan   January 21st, 2008 8:59 pm ET

Edwards speaks the truth. About the Health Care. Corporate America HMO'S give money to fight in their corner. The truth shall set you free.

Jenny, Worcester MA   January 21st, 2008 8:51 pm ET

NOW, YOU'RE PAVING A WAY FOR YOUR FUTURE JOB IN THEIR ADMINISTRATION???????????????????????????

cheryl   January 21st, 2008 8:48 pm ET

How could anyone not only in SC but also in the other states even consider Hillery Clinton as president of the United States? She would be a horrible representation of what women and this United States stand for. She is anything but presidential.

Dan   January 21st, 2008 8:44 pm ET

Another think, I do not go to Wal-Mart. Everthing in the store is made in China.

Paul Kruger   January 21st, 2008 8:44 pm ET

What each candidate needs to do is stop the dog & pony show of throwing out generalities, name calling, and making promises AND specifically lay out a very specific step by step plan of how they are going to deal with EACH problem and how EVERY penny is going to be raised to pay for the solution. Once the above starts, then the REAL debating can begin.

Mamie   January 21st, 2008 8:40 pm ET

It is very frustrating to listen to Clinton throw out the bait and Obama take it. I had hoped he could ignore her mud slinging. I think he tried for a long while but adding the ex president to the mix forced him to respond. She continues with her sniping and embarrasses me for women. The stereotypes come to mind. Her interrupting Obama was really bad form and ignoring time just plain rude. Good for Edwards to point out that there is three people NOT two debating. At that point it was not a debate, it was disgraceful.

And also I am a former UNITED STEEL WORKER that has lost my job. My job has gone overseas. BUY AMERICAN, BUY UNION MADE.

Dan   January 21st, 2008 8:37 pm ET

I think John Edwards knows what he is talking about. He knows what a BLUE COLLAR WORKER is going through. John Edwards is the MAN.

Lesley   January 21st, 2008 8:36 pm ET

It can't be any clearer that Hillary is much more knowledgeable and experienced than Barack Obama. It's no contest. But kudos to John Edwards for putting an end to the petty back and forth snickering and bickering between Obama and Clinton.

pat nave   January 21st, 2008 8:35 pm ET

What Obama or Edwards need to do is slap down on the counter a copy of Hillary Health Care and ask her if that's the kind of government she intends to impose, a top-down I-know-what's-best-for-you government.

She set back universal health care by fifteen years.

Mike T   January 21st, 2008 8:29 pm ET

Here again, every time there is an article about or photos of these 3 candidates: Why is Clinton always first, Obama always second, and Edwards always third? Is this supposed to be some kind of subliminal persuasion?

Emilio Porras   January 21st, 2008 8:22 pm ET

Just sounding presidential does mean that one could be elected President. In a trend of a downward economy where jobs are getting scarce and fear of recession. When everyday what we hear is that the exchanges in the world are going down along with the NY Stock. Where subprime is a nasty word fear by low income earnes who may loose their shelter. Awaking the economic beast to churn the butter for our daily bread takes more than a tax rebate and one side stimuli. We need to take action and not just talk.

Any candidate needs to really focus on reality not unproductive issues.

Robert M Kraus Sr   January 21st, 2008 8:19 pm ET

I said this some time ago: The Clintons are cunning; they are not to be trusted.

Well, now I say Bill Clinton is not only cunning, but he is untruthful. And so now, more than ever, the Clintons are not to be trusted.

Edwards needs to remind people that he "one" the state four years ago, huh? Wow. That's shameful.

Chris   January 21st, 2008 8:15 pm ET

Bill Schneider needs to remind people that John Edwards "WON" the state four years ago, not "one" the state four years ago.

Ashley   January 21st, 2008 8:13 pm ET

In the Edwards comment, there is something incorrect. The statement "...he ONE the state four years ago," should be, "...he WON the state four years ago."
