Sen. Obama owes his trademark phrase 'Fired up, ready to go' to Edith Childs.
Sen. Obama owes his trademark phrase 'Fired up, ready to go' to Edith Childs.

GREENWOOD, South Carolina (CNN) – The woman made famous by Barack Obama's "fired up" stump speech story is speaking her mind on the recent feud between the Illinois senator and former President Bill Clinton, implying he crossed the line with his latest attacks on the Illinois senator.

"The president needs to step back," said Edith Childs, a city councilwoman from Greenwood, South Carolina who is, as Obama puts it in his stump, famous for her chant of "fired up, ready to go."

"His wife is the candidate, not him," she continued. "I think he just needs to step back and maybe coach her in what she needs to do."

Today's rally in Greenwood was Obama's first visit to Greenwood since meeting Childs back in June. A the end of his speech, he told the story as he usually does but brought Childs on stage to lead the crowd in a new chant that included the lines "go out and vote" and "Sen. Obama will be our next presi dent."

obama can't even handle a piece of paper. how can he handle the United States? you can't be just present as president. we have seen in the last 8 years someone being just present. it is to important of a time to leave to someone who is so unsure of he position to just vote present. wake up america and cnn…

Jim, American in Paris   January 24th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

Obama has all the clowns with their funny hats on his side! They should step back and start thinking about what their really voting for!

People of South Carolina: don't make your decision based on skin color.

Daniel let's be careful not to make general comments like "all these black people" this is exactly what is turning people off

Diane   January 24th, 2008 6:38 am ET

To Angela,

You totally missed the point.

When have you ever seen a current or former head of State on the front page of an American newspaper because he's spreading disinformation for the political and professional benefit of his wife or family?

Ferdinand Marcos comes to mind, but didn't he wind up in prison?

E G   January 23rd, 2008 7:42 pm ET

I have never heard anything but praise from the Clintons for Obama as a person. They only attack his politcal views and record. This is a political campain is it not. But Obama and his supporters have made some really hateful comments about the Clinton's personalities. This only shows his imiturity. He also got his political training in.Chicago and you know their reputation for mud slinging politics.

Recent Zoghby poll in South Carolina

Obama 43% Hillary 23% Edwards 15%

Son of the South beaten badly by the Blacks.

Black power is evident. Dr. King is rolling over his grave: Blacks are racists, still!!!

I think as John Edwards said "Let's be fair".
Let's ask Bill Clinton, Michelle Obama, Elizabth Edwards, Ann Romney, Cindy Mc Cain, Janet Huckabee & whoever else is married to ALL go home. NOBODY campaign but the candidates. Would that stop this insane need to keep this in the headlines instead of what's important to us voters? Oh yes, we're still out here, waiting.
We're still going to be voting. Not all of us are sheep, doing & hearing only what we're fed. You might want to consider that when embarking on these very slick media's spins. Heck, even the media is slipping up & making brief mentions that Obama isn't perfect. Or as he confessed, maybe has a "little dirt on his hands". History is going to have as much fun with this election as they do the GWB presidency. I didn't vote for him or his father & I ain't buying into this BS either.

karla   January 23rd, 2008 6:34 pm ET

Cam   January 23rd, 2008 5:53 pm ET

It is ridiculous to compare Michelle and Elizabeth to a former president. Yes, they are all spouses, but one would have to be ignorant to ignore how influential Bill Clinton's political clout is. He comes with a reputation deeply ingrained in the American mind, and I think it is unfair to put voters in a position where they must essentially vote for Bill and Hillary Clinton. I think it is unavoidable that peoples' impressions of Bill are going to affect Hillary, that's the point of having a two-term limit on the presidency and other forms of office. Not to mention the fact that Bill has very real connections and alliances from his former presidency (come on here, he was PRESIDENT) that are certainly giving him access to influential groups and more press time. Furthermore, I would be wiling to challenge anyone that Michelle or Elizabeth are as pointed in their criticisms–Bill can get away with saying much more personal, controversial comments than either Obama or Edwards' wives.

I think the Clinton's should stop taking advantage of Bill's former presidency, and Bill should stop doing Hillary's dirty work. Right now she can get away with saying whatever she wants–and through a respected former leader, no less!–since she is still able to say it wasn't her. She wants it both ways. She shouldn't be able to have her cake and eat it too.

And do we really want America to become a country of powerful, dynastic families? We're reverting back to the past, people! This is not democracy! A former first lady running for president violates the spirit in which the law limiting the presidency to two terms was made!!! Bill Clinton should have no way, formal or informal, to be living back in the white house. Political races should not be so controlled by powerful alliances, money, and former white house experience!!!

OBAMA 08!

RuthieM   January 23rd, 2008 5:28 pm ET

Whitehouse. For eight years Americans enjoyed a great economy, low unemplyment
low interest rates, balanced budget and all you can remember is Bill gettin a little on the side.talk about ignorance, you must be happy with the old Bush thinking that whats good enough for me is.....good enough.

GO HILLARY,GO BILL BACK TO THE WHITEHOUSE

AND GIVE US ALL A THRILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TO: Republican in NY:

Your entire comment is dergogatory. But so typical of a Republican. Polls as "some" of us know are not always right. But if I were you I wouldn't talk. Your party elected a president who misues the English language! Because of that there are numerous websites, published books and people who make fun of him–and he obtained an MBA from Harvard!! So, you want to talk about Hillary supporters being "uneducated"– we were smart enough not to vote for an IDIOT for President! You and your party on the other hand were not smart enough. You voted for an IDIOT!

henry   January 23rd, 2008 3:36 pm ET

-When Obama was ahead of Hilary everyone talking about, he should attack her.
Then when he started to defend himself everyone start to say he's pilng on.
You people of trying to tie his hand. Yes Harrison he a man. A thinking man that not used to wadding in the dirty to win. He not use to doing anything to win.
When Hilary though she was going to loose, New Hamphire , she cried. That a person ready from day one. Give me a break. What a big joke the Clinton is. No kind of ethics. Clinton had become low life, with no morals. When it all over Clinton, you Democratics going found out that you won nothing. Clinton, you have done what the Republician Party could do. You given Republician the President.
Now you Bill Clinton can glory in your win.

We need a New Deal Bringer and That is Barack Obama, of course there will be whites and black alike who say he cant do it and they wont vote for him, and for them lets pray for they know not what they are trying to get into with another 4yrs of Hillary Clinton. We need a change from the past lets not go backward, lets move forward VOTE FOR BARACK in 08 but more importantly vote your Consciousness!!!

I like what you said Ada...The clintons have so many scandals its ridiculous yet the Obama camp for some reason is choosing to ignore this to there detriment.

Do a search on the The Clinton Body Count and one might find some interesting information.

I think what the Clintons have shown is what many of us have already suspected and the they are active members in the Confederate Knights of America

A wise man once said that Jim Crow didnt dissappear he simply changed his name to James Crow Jr Esquire, in essence he cleaned himself up since his Arkansas days of birth and has moved to Washington DC as Billary Clinton.

henry j malachi   January 23rd, 2008 3:11 pm ET

if Clinton got so much experience she need to prove it. Show those records that you got in husband library. Hilary Clinton release all your records. You alway talks about your experience, prove it show , your records. Clinton you maybe ex-presi
dent you don't act like it. Obama is doing great running against two people. It hard to run against one, but two. Hilary you will do anything to win. But if you win, you will nothing. At least I will not vote for you. I would vote Republician before I vote for you. You Black folks some of you , just like the house negro in the old days. you can't see for riches around you. You think everything is fine. But come down off your cloud. Smell some roses of life. There was nothing about race until you Clinton, bought it into the race. All you and your husband was keeping us down. Now a black on your level. The real you come out Clinton. So you help us in the past. So what , you got what you wanted. Now a black man got a chance to be President.. You are all out of yourself . You black politics , you think about the reason you are where you are. Don't forget who put you there. After the Primary thing going to change.
You may not be where you are now. Yes I am a black Disabled Veteran. Obama and John Edward is the only Democratic Party I will vote for. But if they don't win, I will vote for a Republician. Thing are going change one way of another. Obama you have made us open our eyes. Hilary show your record that you are so proud of.

Karen   January 23rd, 2008 2:58 pm ET

Apparently Obama thinks Bill Clinton should "step back', but has to have a woman say it for him???? If Bill should step back, so should all the candidates spouses. No one told Michelle Obama she should step back when she made her Anti-Hillary speech in Nevada. Of course not. Just because Hillary's spouse is a former President, doesn't mean he doesn't have the same rights to speak on behalf of his spouse just like the other candidates' spouses do. And as for the comment by "Republican in NY" on Hillary's supporters being uneducated, uh, we have educated ourselves on the issues, that's why we support Hillary. Go make your anti-democrat comments on a page that talks about Republicans. Oh, wait, you all backed Bush. Talk about uneducated, but hey, I won't stoop to those levels.

Why should Bill Clinton back off, we still have freedom of speak in this country. Other canidate spouses gettheir say, its just that here we might have a spouse that knows what they are talking about. Besides this is an American deal, two for the price of one. Someone had a growing economy, relative peace, a surplus, and a balanced budget. Let Bill speak, despite the Republican attacks against his administration from day one, he seemed to have accomplished more for the good of the nation than the Bush administration with a Republican Congress.

Republican in NY   January 23rd, 2008 2:08 pm ET

The polls are RIGHT!

Hillary supporters are really uneducated...Probably never been to school. Only thing they know is blindly follow the Hill-Harry.

Yamaka   January 23rd, 2008 2:03 pm ET

When Michelle and Elizabeth campaign for their spouses for now more than a year, why not Prez Clinton do the same for his spouse?

It's their right.

It is a historical coincidence we have a leading candidate whose husband happens to be the former President, one who loves to campaign for his wife and his Party.

What's wrong with this? Maybe, Obama's Black supporters cannot see the damage they do to their candidate on "racial/color" issues. He wants Whites to vote for him, and they did overwhelmingly in Iowa, NH etc.

He must now say that Blacks can look at other non-Black candidates and vote for them.

He needs to move color-blind if he wants to win the Nomination.

Bill Clinton needs to follow the lead of the other wives and let their men run their own race for the presidency, it would be interesting to see how Hillary handles her own show without having hubby defend her. Step back Bill

Sambudhollybear   January 23rd, 2008 1:33 pm ET

Why should Hillary back off Obama starts the mess. Everybody thinks that she should stand by and say nothing and let this man walk over her. Bill have all the right to stand by Hillary to campaign for her. If I remember he is a citizen of United States after leaving the office and got the right to say and support her. Everybody is upset that he knows how to campaign and the Media knows that. I see that Obama has 65% percent of blacks supporting him over Hillary in SC and the upcoming states of course it wasn't a surprise to all of the American people. If Obama wasn't running where all support would go think American people . I watch CNN News, and other news media all I see is Obama is mention 99% on all station what has this person got to get all of the attention. Can any off the media news Station explain to all of American people why is he so important I can't see where he so important to me. I got to give Lou Dobbs credit he did give Hillary & Edwards some credit Thanks Lou. All I hear about Obama on the new he already elected as President of United States. And how dare some people of Senators media , telling Bill Clinton to com down and back off why don't Obama back off he new that he would be facing both when he decide to run. Obama if you can't take the heat step asidet , because I know two other candidate can take the heart and be able to run this country.

To the individual that compared the fact that Tony Blair was being praised in the Financial Times whilst highlighting President Clinton on the campaign trail this is not an accurate picture. In todays Independent there are complaints on the way Tony Blair is handling his new job as Middle East envoy. Before you compare the two take a look at all the good work that has been accomplished by the William J Clinton Foundation and the Clinton Global Initiative and then compare it to Tony Blairs actions since leaving office. President Clinton is respected in the UK just because 1 newspaper says different doesn't mean that America's reputation is being hurt globally by Bill Clinton- the current administration has managed to do that all by themselves.

LEE   January 23rd, 2008 1:11 pm ET

Ms. Childs understand what is taking roots in this country better than most politicians in Washington, D.C. The Clintons represent the old school, they cannot stop a movement just like the old south could not stop events taking place in this country over 50 years ago that change the very fabric of these United States. The good people in this country are not fearful, they are hunger for change, they are fired up and ready to go because the time is ripe, Bill, Hillary, Magic, Bob Johson and many others are agents of resistance which is the same force that stood in the doorways of change and tranformation that took place doing the civil rights movement of the 60s. Like Dr. King who understood the people were ready for change, Ms Childs and senator Obama both realize the time is upon us once again, the time is now.

pam Eugene OR   January 23rd, 2008 12:57 pm ET

The spouses of Obama and Edwards are speaking. They just don't have the celebrity of an ex (impeached) president. They are talking about what the husbands will do for America. They are not out there telling lies and half truths and distorting everything Obama says. He is forced to defend the Clinton attack machine every time he turns around which leaves him precious little time to present his ideas. Obama is trapped in the Clinton web of lies and it is very difficult to get out of it with his honor in tack. I admire his supreme efforts to fight these two vicious liars.
Please step back Bill and dial down the lies and twisted tales. I used to respect you and that is all but gone. You a shame to America now. How sad!

Let's get one thing straight. Obama is no MLK nor JFK!! And he never will be. There will always only be one MLK and one JFK. I have lived through those years when both were alive, and I get sick and tired when candidates try to identify themseleves to them. It's an insult to their hard work, experience, dedication to public life, and their legacy!

Casey   January 23rd, 2008 12:25 pm ET

Okay already. Obama is going win South Carolina. Who cares? Hillary is going win the whole thing so it doesn't really matter how much of a margain he wins by. A win is a win. He will win this battle, and lose the war.

Sad to Say   January 23rd, 2008 12:22 pm ET

To Joojo black people helped get Bill Clinton into office twice and are not obligated to do the same for Hillary. Nobody has a problem with him supporting his wife just be truthful about neither one of them says anything negative about the white man (Edwards)he is running too. But they sure have plenty to say about the black man (Obama)why is that don't forget Hillary was a Goldwater girl so where did all of her sudden respect for MLK come from? I guess black people still don't get it it is okay to support white people but don't you dare give your support to a black man.

Sonja   January 23rd, 2008 12:17 pm ET

I agree, If he is trying to run things now what do you think is going to happen if she wins???? Also she needs to stop saying that Bill said things and not her Bill is speaking for her and if not she needs to stop him and let people know that she does not agree with him.

A. Harrison   January 23rd, 2008 12:07 pm ET

I thought this was a political contest. Why are we protecting someone from what they will inevitably get from all parts of the Republican party. Why are we picking and choosing who should say and not say and who should question and not question. This is how we learn about candidates and how they react to criticism.

Last time I checked, Obama was a grown man. Get with it and handle your own battles Obama and stop hiding behind these many people jumping to your defense.

If we are really going to stand for what is "TRUTH", some folks need to pay close attention to what is going on from the "CLINTON CAMP".
It really shocks me that Folks can question a persons Faith and Religion and completely forget that someone who once sat at the most powerful and respected position in this country and the world, "CHEATED ON HIS WIFE WITH ANOTHER WOMAN, TRIED TO COVER HIS ACT OF ADULTARY and LIED UNDER OARTH is not being taken in any consideration. We don't need to be reminded of any defilements of the past. We need a new legacy that is ready to stand for what is right.

With all due respect, if I were Bill Clinton I would keep my mouth shut….

Anyone in Obama's position would "feel frustrated" if "someone" with a different color skin who defiled the diginity of the highest office in America is being compared to a "black brotha". That's an insult period!
Moreover, I thought that "we all shall be judged not by the color of our skin but by the content of our character….. wouldn't we??

Thomas, NV   January 23rd, 2008 11:44 am ET

Susan, MI – If Bill's attacks were truthful, it wouldn't be an issue. The sheer fact that he is intentionally lying to the American People (never happened before, has it?) in order to get votes is the issue. Tearing apart the democratic party through slander is not helping us put a democrat in the Oval Office.

I greatly prefer Obama, but I COULD vote for Hillary but I cannot and will not vote for Billary.

Bill Clinton is a seasoned pro at distorting truth to serve his purposes and its showing in their campaign. Remember "I didn't inhale" and "I didn't have sex"? He's coaching Hillary well.

We can thank Bill Clinton for George Bush. Remember when he was a liability for Al Gore's campaign for the White House? Remember how close that election was? If not for Bill Clinton, George Bush would still be working out of Texas.

I say NO to voting for Hillary largely because I simply can't stand her running mate.

Let's move forward not backwards!

King NC   January 23rd, 2008 7:52 am ET

John Thomas   January 23rd, 2008 6:05 am ET

Obama is clearly a crybaby supported by a bunch of crybabies. Obama expects to be exempt from any and all criticism and his supporters think he is pure perfection. I cannot wait until Feb. 5 when Hillary trounces Obama all over this great nation.

Hillary for economic reasons   January 23rd, 2008 4:01 am ET

Ex president Bill Clinton is very much an American citizen with rights granted to ALL citizens, one of which is freedom of speech. Another right in this country is to be able to participate and campaign for your candidate choice. That is why America is such a great nation. Is Mr. Obama suggesting that right be taken away from citizens? So sad he and his campaign run to the media every time President Clinton campaigns for his spouse. Mr. Obama and followers, this is American rights, learn them!

Ken   January 23rd, 2008 2:57 am ET

The Clintons are , as usual, showing the personal vindication and using bullying dirty tactics against anyone obstructing their path to return to the White House whether they are Repbulicans or fellow Dems. I'd rather vote for anyone but the Clintons!

Steve, Lyons, CO   January 23rd, 2008 2:52 am ET

What, Obama is now against free speech?

Bill Clinton can do whatever the hell he wants to in support of his wife. Obama's turning into a bigger whiner everyday.

If he didn't expect Clinton to campaign for Hillary, than he's far less intelligent than I thought.

Glen   January 23rd, 2008 2:43 am ET

Excuse the English by Past President Clinton should set back and shut up. It is absolutely sickening to listen to the man speak for his wife. Yes you would expect the spouse or partner of a candidate to stand by the Man, or Women as the case may be, but in typical Clinton Fashion, twisted truths and twisted lies flow from the mouth of this man, Hillary knows he going to do it, Hillary plans it, just like she wore the Presidents pants while he was in office.

Now we can point to a few attempts by the Clintons to do go, however the horror that the USA faced was created under his presidancy and executed when he was gone.

Please just stop Bill, the more you talk the more you make me sick. Hillary stop, let Barack put his thoughts forward without having to constantly correct the twisted facts of your campaign.

Hillary is a Women a Women when she says shes a Women or is a Women a Women when she proves it. My momma aint no fool, and she would not parad herself around while her man acted like one either.

David   January 23rd, 2008 2:08 am ET

Wow, what happened to freedom of speech? That is right, it is a right of us all, including those that want to shut up our former president.
Obama has Oprah and his wife and others speaking for him.
Hillary has Bill. I am glad he is speaking and I want him to keep on.

Go Bill and Hillary. We love you both.

Don't let them suppress you because they are scared.

jack   January 23rd, 2008 12:57 am ET

common, Bill Clinton is the former president of United States. Thats far important than being spouse of candidate in political public life. Being former president, people listen to what he says.

Andrea   January 23rd, 2008 12:43 am ET

President Clinton has gone beyond criticizing Obama, he and Hillary are literally twisting Obama's words...they are baiting him and playing VERY dirty. I started out supporting Hillary, but her constant non-stop negative campaigning and distorting the truth have made me decide to not vote for her. It saddens me to say this because I would love a woman president, but I do not trust the Clintons. They are conducting a very ugly and dirty campaign.

Adrian   January 22nd, 2008 10:51 pm ET

I don't understand all these criticisms about former President Clinton. Why should former President Clinton step back when the spouses of the other candidates are allowed to criticise Hillary Clinton? Both Michelle Obama and Elizabeth Edwards have made pointed criticisms against Hillary last year and there's nothing wrong with that while this right should not be extended to former President Clinton because he's a former president?

Come on, give me a break! Obama and his supporters cannot claim that he wants to have a fair campaign and yet forbid former President Clinton to campaign for his wife. If he cannot stand the heat from the Clintons, how could he stand the heat from the even more nasty Republicans in the general election if he is the Democratic nominee. He should learn from JFK when he always played it cool and smart against the attacks from Richard Nixon during the 1960 election.

Bill Clinton needs to go back to sleep like he did when MLK'S son was speaking. What a joke.

He disgraced this nation one time and he is doing it again with his latest antics. Some of us know he is a liar and will do anything to get in office...absolutely no character in his bones.

Wake up Democrats...the world is watching us and who we choose as President.

I agree with that Bil Clinton needs to step back attacking Brack Obama and show some respect for the american people.

Um...why doesn't she step back? Freedom of speech for all people who support an Obama presidency. But censorship, censorship, censorship for those who oppose it. Ahhh, Democracy at it's finest.

Obama, I'm not feeling bad for you. If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen.

We agree that former President Clinton sometimes gets carried away in his zeal to campaign for Hillary – but no one has ever accused him of being a shrinking violet!!

It seems that many new terrains are being tread in this Democratic presidential campaign – a black man, a woman AND a former President as a spouse. To say that Bill should not stump for Hillary would be to say that Michelle and Elizabeth should not campaign for their spouses either. Bill just needs to figure out how to tamp down his style and remember that it is HILLARY who "he's out on the campaign trail for"!! We're sure that he's such a political workhorse that yes, sometimes he goes over the top to try to get his point across. BUT Hillary has shown time and time again for the past 25 yrs that she is perfectly capable of standing up for herself.

So please to everyone – stick to the issues. EMPHASIZE your spouses positives instead of arguing the other candidates perceived weaknesses. And find a way to point out the candidate's differences without creating another brawl. ALL THREE candidates need to stand up and decry the negative 527 ads :( and whisper campaigns (aimed at Edwards in IA and Clinton in NV and now Barack in SC). This is not helping the party.

The country is sliding towards a recession and we need a Democrat in the Oval Office in Feb 2009 who can finally get us back on track.

You, Go Girl! :)

He better step back before Obama leaves the party and runs as an independant. That would be an incredible loss to the Democratic party. Bloomberg wants to jump in it, there are others on the sidelines. No reason Obama can't run as an independent if he doesn't get the nomination. Democrats are throwing the party away, there is no way the American public will elect Hillary. They don't want to have to stare at Bill Clinton on TV every day!
