Bill Clinton fielded a tough question from a five year old Wednesday.
Bill Clinton fielded a tough question from a five year old Wednesday.

KINGSTREE, South Carolina (AP) — During a day marked by sparring with reporters, Bill Clinton fielded perhaps his toughest question Wednesday from a 5-year-old.

"What do you do when you get married?" McKenna Chance asked the former president.

Laughter erupted from the crowd of about 400 people gathered at a recreation center. Clinton paced the stage for several moments.

Then he pointed to the back of the room at the media horde that's been following him as he campaigns around the state for his wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton.

"See all the press people back there? They put me through the wringer this morning, and everything I said is about to pale in comparison to what I'm now going to say," Bill Clinton said.

But the remarks were rather innocuous. The best things about being married, he said, are spending your life with your best friend and having children.

"The best moment of my life, I think, was that I was in the hospital, in the room, with my wife when our daughter was born," Bill Clinton said.

Earlier Wednesday, during a heated exchange with a CNN reporter, Clinton said his wife's rival, Barack Obama, and the media had stirred up tensions over race.

At least he had the common sense to talk about the good things of marriage, instead of the affairs with interns.

Good Grief. Slow news day CNN?

Jenny, Worcester MA   January 24th, 2008 8:55 am ET

CNN, you are incorrigible. not surprisingly though. you'd be more than willing to sell your mother for money and power.

Go to independent Internet sources, like Democracy Now, for real information and perspective, people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

janet   January 24th, 2008 8:56 am ET

When it comes to flip flopping I don't believe that any candidate should use that against another. As I believe that there is not one politician that has not done this at one time or another. When it comes to bill clintion disrupting hillarys campaign I do not think he hurts it and obama's wife has just as much right to stand up for her husband as bill does for hillary.I am sure she knows her husbands attributes as well as bill knows hillarys.I say stop the bickering to them both though and stick to the important issues.

Obamas has been crying since he lost every primary since Iowa, where 17yr olds (who can’t vote in general election) and Bill Richardson supporters put him over the top, otherwise he would have lost there too. The media has told the country that SC is a racist black only vote. So why would anyone other than the only 1/2 black candidate stay there. John Edwards is wasting his time in SC per the media. I don't think that ALL SC voters are as racist and naive as the media wants to portray them. It’s an attempt to help Obama because his camp has made fools of the media. It took voters and an ex-president to bring his terrible senate record, bush/Chaney backing, republican loving, lack of good judgment and inexperience out in the open when the media tried to hide it. Frankly we are tired of obama crying! If he crashes so quickly because he’s getting caught with corrupt campaigning funds with Rezko etc… what would he do when foreign leaders come at him? Run crying too, or call Oprah for help? …Just what we cannot afford to take a chance on. Giving pre-written church speeches does not make a President. And having his wife, Michelle Obama stumping throwing out racial comments is disgusting! No one sees her as first lady material; we don’t even see her as a lady! No one was crying when obama camp was attacking Hillary? And ALL the media treating her unfairly. She has proven that she is a strong leader after all the attacks she has endured and over come. Thank God the voters are smarter than the media and obama give them credit for. DONT WASTE VOTES ON OBAMAS, WE DONT NEED A RACIST IN THE WHITE HOUSE

Drew in Arkansas   January 24th, 2008 9:02 am ET

Each day, I lose a little more respect for Pres. Clinton. Do we really want another four years of attack and blame constantly revolving around the Clintons?

In the long run, I think Bill helps Obama rather than Hillary. The more Bill speaks, the more we are reminded of the weaker aspects of his presidency.

Amy   January 24th, 2008 9:03 am ET

Bill did not answer this kid honestly. His honest answer would have been that as Bill Clinton when he got married he did not respect his vows.

And that is why he, Bill Clinton, is out answering questions now from a 5 year old kid. He owes his wife Hillary and has to campaign for her. Too bad that is not why we elect a candidate though.

RealityKing   January 24th, 2008 9:03 am ET

Bill can't even give a straight answer to a 5 year old.

Q: "What do you do when you get married?"

A: Take an oath in front of God, to love, charish and foresake all others until death do you part.

Christine Atlanta, Ga.   January 24th, 2008 9:05 am ET

It was OK when Michelle Obama was telling the blacks "to wake up" and vote for her husband, when they were supporting the Clintons.
But I guess that wasn't racial. I have felt all along, that playing the race card, will backfire on Obama.

Sigmund Freud   January 24th, 2008 9:08 am ET

trueDemocrat   January 24th, 2008 9:09 am ET

PLEAAAAASE! Enough about Bill Clinton!!! He is NOT running. Spare some of your coverage to the declared candidates.

Brenda Gandy   January 24th, 2008 9:09 am ET

In the Democratic debate in SC Hillary Clinton cannot be accused of not talking about the issues. She is the only candidate that alerted the American public of the presidential executive branches covert mission to commit the US to Iraq over the next ten years, or longer. The president does not have the power to set up a treaty without submitting it for approval by the Senate, so he is setting up another binding agreement for our troops to remain in Iraq for many years and - more frightening than almost anything I have heard from this administration - he is committing our troops to keep the current Iraq administration in office! This is unpresidented as we do not have another treaty like this with any of our other allies and never have had. If our other democratic candidates who are saying they want to get the 'troops out of Iraq' are serious, then they should be shouting this news to all Americans and telling us how we can stop the Bush executive branch from setting up a permanent agreement of this type with Iraq. Also, NPR did a fantastic piece on this today…you can read it on their website.

S.B. Stein E.B. NJ   January 24th, 2008 9:20 am ET

Given all that Ken Starr put him through, I am surprised he answered that; it was 5 year old and how much trouble could a question like that bring. Bill Clinton can most likely attest to the fact that no marriage is perfect and some partners make mistakes. His mistake(s), unlike most others, was (were) made public for all to see. How is that relavent to being the president of the U.S.

Peace   January 24th, 2008 9:20 am ET

I think Bill dogde the answer. Most people would expect the answer to be: "YOU MUST ALWAYS STAY TRUTHFULL AND NEVER CHEAT"!

Michelle, AL   January 24th, 2008 9:21 am ET

Let the hypocrisy begin..

Here come people bashing President Clinton for his past mistakes, while I'm sure all of you have lived a perfectly sinless life. And believe me, I can tell you from experience I am not condoning adultery. But I also don't condone people acting all holier than thou when it comes to others and their past failures.

Whatever you think about President Clinton and his sexual escapades, his ability to govern this country is unrelated to that. That shouldn't reflect on Hillary and her campaign either. I agree with President Clinton and his critique of the media - stick to the issues and stop trying to fan the flames of controversy.

myvote   January 24th, 2008 9:23 am ET

Great explanation.

J. McKinney SW MO   January 24th, 2008 9:24 am ET

Kind of sick to put a 5 year old up to asking a question like that, but handled very tactfully. I wonder how many of the men on here (and women for that matter) who are always making the hateful comments, have been unfaithful to their spouse? It is sure not right, but it is a very prevalant thing in this society. Your children aren't going to be led by your president's (or your president's spouse's) private life. They will be led by YOUR private life, which they are a part of. So keep your own back yard clean, and let's stick to the election and what Hillary can do for us as president. I think she is by far the one most able to try to clean up this mess.
GO, HILLARY!!! You have the vote of me and my family.

Larry   January 24th, 2008 9:25 am ET

Yes, how dare the press ask questions that are difficult. But still a nice "planted" question to make Bill appear softer. And if you dont think it was a set-up of a question, you are blind to the tricks of the Clintons. It was a staged moment for the former President, a true softball question.

zibayo   January 24th, 2008 9:26 am ET

Obama has NO chance of winning the electoral college in the general election. The Democrats have really fouled up. Again. who would have thought that after 8 years of George Bush- the worst president in American history. The Republicans would be looking at a White House victory with President McCain.

Rebecca   January 24th, 2008 9:40 am ET

I have heard from educators in Arkansas, that Bill is the one who came to school, picked up Chelsea, and did the parenting when they were in Arkansas. Of course, I don't know this first hand. However, I do believe that his ststements here are probably the most sincere and honest that he has ever made.

Raj Bali   January 24th, 2008 9:43 am ET

Bill Clinton as a terrier of his wife Hillary….is good. So Obama has two rivals. This is fair.

Steve, Pennsylvania   January 24th, 2008 9:43 am ET

Bill seems to have forgotten that one of the other good things about being married is apparently cheating on your wife and then lying ot both her and the country about it.

And I can't help but chuckle at Bill's laughable claim that Obama's the one stirring up tensions over race. The "first black president" seems to be doing his best to turn this election into a racial war, what with him suggesting that people in South Carolina only support Obama because he's black and not a woman.

Kevin   January 24th, 2008 9:47 am ET

yup, very slow news,

edward   January 24th, 2008 9:47 am ET

Ha!
It was a child who told the thruth in "The Emperor's new Clothes".
When the press will tell the obvious, that a lot of the Clinton attacks are not attacks, but lies? Afraid of the Emperor?

DD, New York   January 24th, 2008 9:48 am ET

I love Bubba! If he were not a former President of the United States, the media really would not be hounding him as much over campaigning for his spouse. The media really looks the other way when Michelle Obama says something a little testy. They leave Elizabeth Edwards alone pretty much because of her illness. Not fair media! Bill has every right to campaign and defend his wife as much as the other candidates' spouses.

Jackie   January 24th, 2008 9:48 am ET

Bill Clinton is a lying, disgusting, maggot. The way he screwed another woman and dragged his daughter and wife through the mud. I can not understand why America is so tolerant of such ignorance. I think that it is very sad that the "PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES" could not keep his dick in his pants for the 4 years that he was representing all of us. The way that he lied to his wife, daughter and the American public, not to mention he was under oath. I guess that America is so immoral, things like fidelity and truthfullness don't matter. As long as they can try to discredit other hopefuls and their reputations. I think that it is a very sad day when the voters would actually believe anything this idiot would say. I just can't understand. Hillery just tolerated him so that she could ride his coat tails in hopes of making it to the white house. You can't love someone and cheat on them. Please dear God, let America see how fake they are and that they will stop at nothing to secure their place in power. God help us all.

John, Euless, TX   January 24th, 2008 9:53 am ET

I love how CNN has to add the little blurb about Clinton having a "heated exchange" with one of their reporters at the end of this write up. CNN is really trying to get their name in the news. I saw what Bill said to the reporter and it really wasn't that "heated". He was making a valid point about the Obama camp.

Kobe, LA   January 24th, 2008 9:53 am ET

Really Mr. President? I though you'd say one of the best moments of your marriage was spent with "that woman". The personal failings of Bill Clinton delivered the presidency to GWB on a silver platter. One moment of pleasure cost us all. The Iraq War, Guantanomo, Abu Ghraib, the Katrina Response, Karl Rove, Scotter Libby: all of these events can credit their moment on the American political stage to Bill Clinton's zipper.

Turn the page.

Mike, Houston, TX   January 24th, 2008 9:54 am ET

Hold on people. Who is running here, Bill or Hillary.

You may like Bill but it is Hillary who is running. Look at her record and experience to make a decision. Hillary has an abismal record, has achieved nothing, has never been a leader, and has no policy to implement.

Don't be fooled by focusing on Bill Clinton and ignoring Hillary.

Hillary is completely unprepared for the presidency and her policies are deeply flawed. If you are the slightest bit intelligent, read her political positions and look at what she is proposing. Once you really understand her position, you cannot justify voting for her.

Judith Ferren Errol NH   January 24th, 2008 9:54 am ET

I think the question was a fair one from a 5 year old…. Bill did say a good answer, but for him it was not the whole truth, but a good answer for a 5 year old… After all no parent wants their 5 year old to believe that it is ok to have lovers as he did…

robert   January 24th, 2008 9:55 am ET

not a bad answer…light hearted; it's the Bill Clinton most people like and respect.

Dave   January 24th, 2008 9:57 am ET

Eli Richmond, Va   January 24th, 2008 9:58 am ET

The Observer   January 24th, 2008 10:02 am ET

What I find bizarre is that people treat Hillary Clinton as if she were the adulterer and not the other way around. Many marriages survive one partner being unfaithful - it's a fact of life and some people should get over it.

Bob   January 24th, 2008 10:02 am ET

Also a sign of devotion that this family has for each other no matter what their problems is that Hillary was at the hospital when Bill had his surgery and in turn is getting hammered on missing votes on certain bills that were taken during this time.

jw, canadian,ok   January 24th, 2008 10:03 am ET

I agree with J.Mckinney on his points and might add, I have to admire the Democrats for not going after W. All the out right lies, high crimes and real impeachable offenses committed by this administration are going largely unpunished. What happended to Bill Clinton was payback for Watergate. The Republican majority tied up the government for a year, spent $50M dollars and all they got was lying to Congress about a lawful act between two consenting adults,
which should have been only between Bill and Hillary.
Hillary has my vote and support and I'll be going to Oklahoma City next Wednesday to see her husband speak.

Born in 1940, I grew up in rural Tennessee and I saw first hand how the African American's were treated. I understand the pride they have in Obama. I do feel that something is stirring in the campaign that may cause a great divide between the people of America. I think we have come such a long way and I hate to see us draw a line between black and white. I hope we can be united and vote for the best person, not the color of skin. I hope we are allowed to hear the candidates views and their goals for America and put aside the bickering. This is OUR country, reguardless of race.

Scott   January 24th, 2008 10:05 am ET

THE LOW-MINDED BEDROOM MENTALITY OF SO MANY ADULTS IS ABSOLUTELY SICKENING. A YOUNG CHILD SHOULD NEVER BE BROUGHT TO THIS LEVEL OF THINKING. I IT MAKES YOU WONDER WHAT IS THIS CHILD BEING SUBJECTED TO IN THE HOME.

MR. AND MRS. CLINTON RESLVED THIS MATTER AND IS MOVING FORWARD AS A PROGRESSIVE COUPLE. GET OVER IT AND GET A FULFILLING LIFE FOR YOURSELF!

J. McKinney,

While I agree with you that our children learn from our private lives. Your people that are in the spot-light are going to be emulated as well. If your leaders and your athletes lead less than honorable lives, what message is that sending our kids? "Mom and dad say this, BUT even the president does this"

Don't try to justify something just because you are voting for the candidate.

Joyce memphis, tn   January 24th, 2008 10:08 am ET

Goodness, it's shameful to focus on the irrelevant things during this crucial primary. What other questions did Bill answer during the trial CNN? I'm sure he talked about important issues, but since I'm in TN, I'm wasn't able to hear them. But thanks to CNN, I'm fortunate to read about his response to a question from a 5yr old (who I know was planted by the media or Barrack's camp). Bill was right on when told the CNN reporter about herself and the news pundits. Get over the kiddie stuff and give America information on the candidates' policies.

Nik T, Houston, TX   January 24th, 2008 10:09 am ET

CNN, why don't you report that Clinton picked up the endorsement of the Gov. of Pennsylvania, a delegate RICH state? These news about a child being inappropriately exposed to politics is ridiculous and unprofessional.

Southern Gal   January 24th, 2008 10:09 am ET

Why would a 5 year old bring up such a question to Bill Clinton unless proded by an adult looking to have him address his infidelities once again. Shame on whoever was with that 5 year old.

Jose Card - Independent   January 24th, 2008 10:10 am ET

If Bill is officially running with his wife and the Dems let him get away with it, he needs to answer questions about issues. We don't need to know more about his family.

The Clintons think that if it is not illegal, anything can be done.
That sounds like how a big corporation thinks.
The Clintons have spent too much time with those rich Dems.

Aron, SC   January 24th, 2008 10:10 am ET

He led this country in a very succssful path. He has been the best president in the recent history of our country. If you want to teach your 5 year old child what marriage is about, you live a perfect marriage life and show him what it is. Dont ask the president of the country about how to run a family. In most of the Americans' view point, he is a good father and a good husband, and the best president. Everyone knows one thing: Hillary is unstoppable!

i love how Clinton groupies try to compartmentalize Bill's lack of character. To say it can be isolated from other aspects of his, or any other person's life, personal or professional, is naive. Whether cheating on his marriage vows, or committing perjury under oath, it can be traced to a flaw in his character. Don't say we're all like him either, the majority of us aren't. Go Obama!!!

I'm ashamed of the priorities of some people in this country.

B. O.   January 24th, 2008 10:25 am ET

Seriously. The true answer is that marriage is about having the strength in a relationship to admit to mistakes and forgiving each other and persevering.

Kudos to Bill and Hillary for their strength to maintain their marriage after the Republican fueled attacks in the 90's. Most people roll over, quit and get divorced. Kudos to Bill and Hillary for sticking it out.

Look at the French President, who got divorced and already has a supermodel new wife…now THAT is obscene.

Joann, Cranston RI   January 24th, 2008 10:26 am ET

Ridiculous! Why would anyone have a 5 year old ask a question - and since when does a 5 year old come up with "what do you do when you get married?"! Bill Clinton was exactly right when he said to the reporter the other day that they don't care about reporting on the "real" issues - all they do is spin the facts and report on lies!! After this election is over, I will not be watching CNN, MSNBC or Fox, anymore because they don't care about Truth.

T   January 24th, 2008 10:27 am ET

I would guess that the loudest critics on here are the biggest cheaters. Just like Larry Craig's anti-gay, and Ted Haggard is a faithful Godly husband, and of course Clinton's biggest critics Newt, and Livingston, and Harry Heide, and Dan Burton. There wasn't a one of those loudmouths that wasn't an adulterer. All of them were. I would guess a similar percentage of the naysayers are here, too. They love them some bible, but forget what was said about casting the first stone.

Jen   January 24th, 2008 10:29 am ET

If he didnt want his personal life to be in the media he should have kept that thing zipped up and had some morals in his life. Good answer for a 5 year old but we all know what marriage means to bill clinton. There was more troubles in Arkansas than anyone imagines. Most of you dont even know the tip of the iceburg when it comes to Bill Clinton. When your a politician your personal life is everyone business. How you handle yourself in your personal life is how you should handle yourself all the time. Not double personalitlies.

ABC-anyone but clinton   January 24th, 2008 10:29 am ET

billy boy forgot to mention the numerous affairs with other women he had throughout his entire marriage. from the previous posts, are u guys saying it's simply okay to accept adulterous marriages? have some pride! if hillary divorced bill, i would've had some respect for her. slick willy did not only cheated on her once, but many, many, many times and she just rolled over like a dog every time. it's so obvious she's only staying with him for political gains. what a shameless dirt bag.

Barbara, NH   January 24th, 2008 10:30 am ET

Never thought i would agree with Bill but I do on this one. If the media would treat him as a spouse like they do Michelle and Elizabeth (and not a former president) then the majority of the hype would be eliminated.

Hillary stated publicly that Obama was showing his frustration. Hillary listen to your husbands comments and hear who is frustrated as he sees the possibility that he will not return to the White House as president for a 3rd term.

FACE THE FACTS   January 24th, 2008 10:33 am ET

The fact is, people, especially all you Clinton Bashers, Hillary is a woman who embodies everything you want in a President. She is strong and smart. She kept her family intact after her husband strayed (maybe more than a few times!) and had the guts, determination and decency to fight for her life as she wanted it for herself and her child. In a high divorce rated society, she took the hard raod and won. She is human and makes mistakes, but they are few and far between, which is okay by me and my family. She can stand up to, and dominate, any problem that comes her way and THAT my friends, is what we should be voting for to rule this country. Don't obssess about the negatives…EACH candidate has them….focus on the positives and you will understand that Hillary is the woman to save this counrty because she loves it…just as she saved her marriage.

Wayne   January 24th, 2008 10:33 am ET

I just have to say this: All of the Obama supporters are such hypocrites. They talk about "A Change We Can Believe In" but they seem to enjoy looking down their noses at everyone and say the most mean spirited things one can imagine. Everyone hammers Bill because he was unfaithful (and rightly so), but no one wants to give the Clintons credit for sticking together through it all. They have held strong to their union. What is wrong with that.? Anyone who thinks a successful long term relationship means never making mistakes has never been in a long lasting marriage.!! It's about making mistakes but loving eachother enough to forgive, make amends and carry on. Obama and his preachy holier-than thou-crowd are getting on my nerves. I've been preached at enough by the Republicans.

Bill Clinton should be ashamed of himself. Does his fairytale logic never end. He blasted a news reporter in SC that HE stopped and spoke with and lied when he said that John Lewis and Andy Young are the only two people alive that marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Is he still smoking but not inhaling? I would never vote for Hillary Clinton because she is not winning on HER merits. The campaign playing field is simply not level - a two term president campaigning as if HE is running for President goes beyond being a supportive spouse.

More African American males went to prison under the Clinton administration and his slow response to Rawanda displayed his truth regarding people of color. I am appalled whenever I hear he is coined as the first Black President, give me a break. He responded to the people who put him in office and the ones that gave him a second term. I have never voted for a Republican president but if for some CRAZY reason Hillary Clinton receives the Democratic nomination, I will vote Republican and change my party to Independent.

Mr. Obama played the race card and lost. What Hillary said about Lyndon Johnson was accurate, he was a force that helped propel MLK's goals on civil rights into legislation. He was a master at guiding legislation and he brought skill and commitment to the legislative effort that was essential to PEACEFUL progress in civil rights. Acknowledging this took nothing away from Dr. King. To call such an acknowledgement racist is what the Obama camp did.

That race-baiting backfired. That was a good thing. "Black" candidates can do this. Real candidates cannot. I think the backfire on this turned Mr. Obama into the Real candidate–you don't see him playing the race card anymore and he and his campaign are the better for it.

And for CNN to say that the Clintons "accused" Mr. Obama of race baiting is, well, what CNN does–the most rusted name is news.

CNN=Clinton Negative News (with optional Network). CNN has lost the respect of American people. They are only interested in negative news and nothing positive.

CNN - stop your divisive news. Blacks are only 13% of the population. It is so sad that it is ONLY Ron Paul talking about Blacks in jail.

Of the 13% population, millions of my fellow Black brothers are in jail and CNN never talk about the injustice in their news.

CNN is Myopic News Network. Very shallow people. Great people think of great things and not divisive thing. Sad for you CNN

I have some breaking news for CNN…

Endorsements: In Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell endorsed Hillary, becoming the 10th Governor to join the campaign. In California, Rep. Joe Baca became the latest Member of Congress to endorse, bringing Hillary's total to 84… In South Carolina, former NFL wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson endorsed Hillary and joined Chelsea to launch "Our Voice, Our Future," a two-week tour to encourage young voters to support Hillary and make their voices heard.

Nationwide Momentum: In Arizona, a new Arizona State University/Channel Eight poll has Hillary up by 21 points over Sen. Obama (45-24). In New Jersey, a new Quinnipiac University poll shows Hillary up by 17 points over Sen. Obama (49-32). Nationwide, a new Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll has Hillary leading Sen. Obama by nine points (42 to 33).

THANX

I didn't vote for the Clinton campaign years ago and won't be doing it this time around either. I fail to understand how so many people can be snowed by this family. Personal matters are personal but, when you are the President, you are accountable for what you do in the nation's living room. If the children of the United States can't look up to the President of our Nation, then who can they look up to? This is a man who abused his position, lied to the country and walked away with a smile on his face. I would love to see a woman as President but I'm not desperate enough to vote for Hillary and would never want Bill Clinton back in the White House either. What I want to hear about is not the bickering between the Clinton's and Obama. Has anyone seemed to notice that we are going to be electing a person of power before too long and that the country seems to be in a trememdous downspin. It would be really nice to hear what these canidates have to say about the actual state and future of the USA and not all this junk between Hilary, Bill and Obama. CNN, can we please stop writing up useless articles and start giving us more information about the real issue and how these future presidents are going to save the USA before it implodes, because im pretty sure some marriage question by a 5 year old, whether placed or not, has nothing to do with the upcoming election.

To the person who asked, "Aren't you just sick of the Clintons?" My answer is not nearly as sick of them as of the George Bush and his cronies. Last night it was revealed by members of the media that he and members of his administration have lied to us 935 times since taking office 7 years ago.

Instead of directing anger and venom at the Clintons, why don't you spend your energy toward impeaching the ones who have taken our country and its integrity down the drain. At least President Clinton left us in a better state than what we're living in now. Bill Clinton's mistake in office was a personal one for which he'll have to atone, but with him, we did have prosperity, jobs and respect around the world. As for Hillary, her's is an example of gracefully keeping her family together and to serving her country in a professional way.

Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama Have VERY SIMILAR VIEWS on how to led our country forward . The only difference now is Hllary Clinton will have a very hard time accomplishing anything( FROM DAY ONE) because of all the enemies she is creating along the way. She has alienated every republician . Barack Obamas non-partisan approach is more likely to recieve the resutls we all claim we want. This is a critical juncture this is no time for games PLEASE get serious!!!!!!!

Why can't the news give us usefull information We remmber the Clinton era as a time of Prosperity. BUT, Did Bill Clinton actually do this for the country when he was in office ( or did he inherit an already growing economy and had little to do with it, as so many say) What did he do about globel warming, what did he do about health care , what did he do about alternative fuel, what did he do about Osama Bin Laden.
Hillary keeps saying she's been woking on health care reform for 35 years. We don't have 35 more years to waste. I remember scandel after scandle when the Clintons were in office

Wow, Hailey. If I didn't know any better, I would say you were a poorly disguised operative from the Clinton machine. If anything, it is the other way around. Clinton is furious that someone has actually come close to upsetting her well-orchestrated plan and is so power-hungry and consumed with desire about being the first female president that literally nothing - NOTHING - will stand in her way. Truth? Fairness? Accuracy? Take a real look at the two records. One - Obama has been in public service longer. Two - Obama is much more a person of conviction (as much as a political figure can be) while Hillary is more of the same. Do we really want another 4/8 years of a Clinton or Bush in the White House. Seriously?

It is an odd way for a great democracy to comport itself in this strange–we have dynasties now backed by lobbyists, backed by machines and machinery. columbus   January 24th, 2008 11:35 am ET

Tsk Tsk democrats. For years we have watched the media - CNN, USA Today, CBS, NBC make it its mission to find dirt on President Bush - which pretty much amounted to nothing. The media has clouded your opinions about the Iraq war and brainwashed you into believing it was a big lie - after all, who cares about the Iraqi people's freedom? Sadaam was a great man, right? There's nothing in it for us, correct? Well, news flash - whether you want to believe it or not, there has been excellent progress in Iraq and things are slowly but surely returning to some semblance of order there and good things DO happen in Iraq - but you will only see that in a small little article in your newspapers. So now I can sit back and watch the media crucify Bill and Hillary for once as you jump on Obama's bandwagon - sure, Obama makes a great news story - he's making history. Oh, and of course, now that the democrats are for once working with President Bush, the tax rebate is cool now. When the Republicans handed out checks in 2001, it was criticized by the dems.

GaryO Virginia Beach   January 24th, 2008 11:36 am ET

Jose Card - Independent   January 24th, 2008 11:36 am ET

vicki,

Bill inherited the world wide booming prosperity after the cold war.
When people feel optimistic about world peace, they spend more and become more creative.

If you read Alan Greenspan's new book, he said senior Bush's economy did pretty well coming out a recession at 4.1% of growth rate, but Bill twisted the fact by using "It's the economy, stupid!"

Worse yet, against his Dem congressional will, Bill pushed forward NAFTA in 1994 and the most favorable trade agreement for China in November, 1999 just before he left office. Eight years of damage done by these two trade agreements left us in today's ruins with the trade deficit and job loss. The only happy party is China, as many South Americans are angry at the destruction of their agriculture when farmers left for the factory jobs that disappeared fast after big corporations found a cheaper location. Now many have nothing.

Will you want to be rescued by Bill and Hillary with your votes?

Hmmm…when I woke up this morning I thought the date was 24 Jan 2008, but after reading this and the majority of the other political stories, I suspect I've actually travelled in time back to 1992 or 1996 as it's obvious Bubba is campaigning for president. That, or this is one helluva case of deja vu!

And in the case of Michelle from AL, not only let the hypocrisy begin, but the idiocy! Keep in mind it wasn't so much his "sexual escapades" that got him in trouble, but his subsequent out-n-out lies, deflections and attempted cover-up that made him only the 2nd prez in US history to be impeached as it was perjury and obstruction of justice charges that got him in hot water, not adultery.
Either way, it's not an issue of acting "holier than thou" or being sinless as it is a critical issue centric to the character of the person involved.
And in the case of the president of the most democratic and free nation in the world, character DIRECTLY relates to his/her ability to govern this country!
I voted for him both times, but in hindsight realize what a farce/liar/cheat he is, especially after so many character issues came to light once he left office.
And thrusting himself back into the limelight in the guise of Hillary's campaign works much to her detriment as we are left no choice but to conjoin the two; hence, the term Billary! The more he speaks, the more I lean to Obama & Edwards.

angelina_ MN   January 24th, 2008 11:39 am ET

a question from a 5 year old? Yep!!! and this child was probably prep for the question as well. You can not and I repeat, can not ask just whatever you want to the Clintons………… that is democrazy for you.
YOu have to have the question handed to you if you want to speak.

By the way I went to Hillary's website to express my concerns about the negative tone of this campaign, adn guess what I had a thank you email for my support and then a credit card offer for my "support," and then I got an application on te mail a few days later……………… mmm. Wonder how this is spreading and how did they get my address, (actual home address) and who is behind these strange emails and strategies.

Maybe it's best that we have another Clinton presidency. Then we'll have "national theater" non-stop, making us forget the trememdously bad decisions our government is making on our behalf. There will be no media time wasted on the brink that we stand upon - no meddling about with the functions of our socialist state that keeps us warm and fed, like always. Perhaps it's best. Go Ron Paul…

R. W. McSween   January 24th, 2008 11:41 am ET

I think you people are not really listening to what the candidates are saying, or in Barak Obama's case what he is not saying. Grow up, vote responsibly for the good of our country, not just to elect the first black president or the first woman president but the person who can and will do the best job for us on day one. Personally, I think that person is Hillary Clinton. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but please take voting seriously. It is a great responsibility and a choice made is one we will have to live with.

Greg   January 24th, 2008 11:41 am ET

I'm still amazed at the vitriole over Bill who made a huge mistake in his "personal life", and had it dragged through the public eye to serve the political purposes of the then republican majority. How can folks scream about him while supporting McCain who also cheated and left his first wife or Guliani? Leave the bedroom issues out of the argument and talk actual issues.

columbus   January 24th, 2008 11:42 am ET

That's right, Mauri and RMH in NYC - you go right ahead and attack President Bush because after all, how do you defend a pig like Bill Clinton? We all know, he "never had sex with that woman", now, don't we? And remember him pointing his figure into the t.v. camera and telling you that? President Bush has NEVER lied about anything. He told us his thoughts on Iraq from the get go and he told us it would be a long war - he has kept America safe for 8 years, and I believe McCain will continue on. Clinton pales in comparison to President Bush - that's why history will not be kind to presidents who have been impeached and had sex scandles. Sorry!

GaryO Virginia Beach   January 24th, 2008 11:44 am ET

It's funny how many responses in this forum focus on the fact that Clinton had at least one illicit sexual affair and lied about it. Why is that such an issue? It does not affect the process of government.

Thomas Jefferson denied having a sexual relationship with Sally Hemmings, but his denial turned out to be false; and he is on on Mt Rushmore. Yep, we have that lying, cheating Tom Jefferson on Mt Rushmore. But he is there because of the contributions he made to our country.

I think we should put William Jefferson Clinton's image on Mt Rushmore too. A colossal granite image of Bill would look great. Don't you think??

Welcome to the Clinton News Network.

Watch Bill Clinton order a soda, then drink it. Hard hitting stories America needs to hear.

Where is the John Edwards story?

Where is the explanation of why Obama has so many "Present" votes in IL? (Present means something different in that legislature).

I'm a democrat & would rather hear about some one who's running. thx.

Hey, CNN moderator—Can you keep this site clean from filth?

OBAMA is the liar   January 24th, 2008 11:45 am ET

He lied about his middle name, he lied about his relationship with Rezko, he lied about his comments on Reagon, he lied about his present votes!
Who is the liar here???

aisha   January 24th, 2008 11:46 am ET

cnn has nothing better to do put negative stuff on clintons ,does not matter right or wrong . they should be focusing on foreclosures and asking people questions, they should be making blogs on economy, health care ,education, crimes, etc etc .they should be writing about each candidate,s policies and asking opinions .but they r only aggrevating the situation.

Sherry   January 24th, 2008 11:47 am ET

So, was it the Republicans or Obama that sent in an innocent child to TRY to accomplish what all of the opposition have been unable to do? I feel sorry for the kid, doesn't have much for parents.

Ady   January 24th, 2008 11:47 am ET

I am tried of the Media tryng to tell us who to vote, no one ever says anything when Michele Obama says anything negative , or Elizabeth Edwards, they leave her alone because of her Illness, well Leave Bill alone too. He has a right to defend his wife and as fars as am concerned Hillary will make the best president. Oprah has turned the SC vote to a racist vote, as far as am concerned they feel like black people in SC don t have common sense, they need Oprah to tell them how to vote, or just because she gets people to donate refrigerators, does that mean she would be paying our bills. South Carolina Oprah saw the need there, she could have !!! Built !!!! her school there, but know she went all the way to South Africa, remember the bible, it says take out the beem in your eyes before you see the speck in some eles eye. Charity does begin at home. Please black people wise up, dont let people keep using your emotion.

Vote for people not because of Color, but because they have done what they said they would do in the past, someone is handsome his black or Oprah said is not a good enough reason to through away your vote. They leave in a Palace we struggle every day just to make it.

Hillary has a Record that can stand the test of time, Obama does not have one yet, maybe in a few years, but not right now. Obama has spech writes and he delivers good speeches, but this is your life, LOOK AT THE RECORD, LOOK AT THE FOLLOW THROUGH. PLEASE PEOPLE DONT THROW AWAY YOUR VOTE.

fergusparent   January 24th, 2008 11:47 am ET

I think Bill answered the question with tact. I mean, would any of you who cheated in your marraige and have a little child ask the question about marraige, would you tell them that you admitted you had affairs with other women/men, or would you say the same thing CLinton did in his answer? He cheated yes, but his personal life did not distract him from his responsibilities as President.

Bush should be charged with Racketeering, murder, invasion of privacy, invading other countries and drinking and getting falling down DRUNK! You people actually trust this guy to run a whole country, his wife spends alot of her time in a Hotel across the street from the White House, because of the Presidents drunkeness. I wouldn't be surprised if after his presidency, they get a divorce, and Bushy boy goes to Condi for sympathy.

Now, put all your criticizims away about Clinton and his infidelity, look in the mirror and tell yourself that Clinton has his faults, but everyone does bad things in thier lives. Better yet, write down on a piece of paper all the sinful things you have done your entire life. I know you have lied at least once to a child, friend, parent, spouse its called being human. Stop dweling on the past and look to the future leave that past where it is…

Frank in Florida   January 24th, 2008 11:48 am ET

For Marilyn in Ohio, why do you say in your first sentence to get off of personal lives, then in your very next sentence you reference something not only of Bush's personal life, but something from the past?!?
I'm definitely no fan of Bush and not so much of the Clintons, but this mindless hypocrisy is idiotic.
In the case of Clinton, the personal life side of it occured DURING his presidency and his personal choice/actions became a matter of public record and more importantly character when he LIED about the entire affair, which lets not forget involved someone entrusted to the govt's care/mentorship!
Regardless…CNN please, for our sanity, focus on the candidates for the '08 race, not on one from the '92 & 96 races!!

angelina_ MN   January 24th, 2008 11:48 am ET

CNN, could you please kindly and respectfully report something worthy on the people who are running for office, such as Senator Obaman, Senator Edwards, Senator McCain, and all.
I am still asking how is running : Bill or Hill, or Billary or as some people had put it, (the HillBillys). Sorry I dont mean to be disrespectful but please I really like to read something about the issues we are facing here, such as the economy, housing crisis, raising costs of college and all higher education, child support for so many poor children, help for all parents who are trying hard to keep up with the high cost of living…………and yes the war, the fact that most of the world see us as their enemies even when they know we are not……….

jugdish   January 24th, 2008 11:51 am ET

no one is saying their perfect or that no other president has ever done bad things but an adultering president (ethics/moral issue - most CEO's would resign for these sorts of things) who lied under oath (perjury - yes that's illegal should have done jail time) still getting this kind of coverage is very troubling for the future of this country….as far as Billary and Obama, we, and the planet, are screwed if these are the best leaders we can offer up to the American people and the world for that matter! Also, I'm tired of hearing the 'you can't point the finger you're not perfect' argument, just because people do bad things doesn't mean we should automatically excuse everyone when they do something bad! Judges and cops commit sins (and crimes sometimes) but they still enforce the law!!!

Lorne Simpson   January 24th, 2008 11:52 am ET

Bill Clinton should sit down
