CNN's John King looks at Huckabee's cash-strapped campaign.

(CNN) - Mike Huckabee is working hard to keep his "scrappy little army" on the march, but with a disappointing second-place finish in South Carolina and in the middle of a resource-draining fight in Florida, the former Arkansas governor is having difficulties keeping his troops moving forward.

Huckabee's inability to turn his under-financed Iowa campaign, backed by a motivated network of evangelicals and home-schoolers, into a broad-based groundswell of support means he is short of campaign cash as he heads into the Florida Republican Primary January 29.

Despite his lack of resources, Huckabee said he is ready to compete in Florida.

Those who believe Huckabee was a successful governor really need to talk to the people of Arkansas. Not enough investigation of his claims was done. The media seem to believe all he said and put it out. But, when you go to Arkansas and talk around, you get a different story. Some even published in local papers that he did a lot of harm to the Republican Party in Arkansas. Thus, the election of a Democrat for Governor in 2006. All of that was not the fault of Bush's policies.....or the Congress. Also, out of 6 members of Congress, 5 are Democrats.
I am from Arkansas and have lived there through Clinton's term's and Huckabee's....I voted for neither of them. Nor did I vote for Clinton for President. Huckabee has been running for President while in the Governor's mansion. And, probably while being a pastor of a church. I recall the story of Jonah in the Old Testament. God told him to go and preach to the people and Jonah would not and ended up in the belly of a whale. Whether you believe the Bible or not, the point is does a minister belong in the White House? They have a special kind of zeal that the parishoners do not have, I think, and if that is their chosen field, should the Presidency be the ultimate goal? I think not. How can they make decisions for the whole of the US with that kind of background? And when will their particular faith beome at odds with the majority of this country? I know how Baptists believe having been raised in a Baptist church and going through all of the teaching that happens there.
As a Christian, I feel that if a man or woman is called to be a minister of the gospel, that should be their primay concern, not a position of power in a country. That was my objection to Huckabee and to some of the things that were facts that he did as Governor. It was not all "sweetness and light" as the media has reported. To run for President here of late, many things have been done by both parties of candidates that would seem to me to be unChristian. The knock-down-drag-out way of campaigning is repugnant to me. I will write in my choice of candidate in 2008..

Hucka be nimble,
Hucka be quick.
Hucka be broke after Florida. Hick.

josh   January 24th, 2008 6:13 pm ET

huckabee is so boring now. I thought he was kind of cute at first, like a teddy bear. But now he is just yawn worthy evangelical fodder.

K. Wilkinson   January 24th, 2008 5:49 pm ET

I am a home schooling mom and I support Romney. I like what he has said about school choice in which he mentions home schooling as an option. I like the freedom Romney's views on education gives to Americans.

Dave in Houston   January 24th, 2008 5:43 pm ET

I'm surprised some of that sweet Iranian cash hasn't rolled in. I've heard that Ahmedinejad and the mullahs wanted to make the world more theocratic. Huckabee would be their man.

David Tating   January 24th, 2008 5:00 pm ET

Honestly,
How can anyone think that a nutjob who doesn't even believe in evolution could ever get elected president? Great job getting all the loony home-schoolers and evangelicals to grab your short little coattails for the ride to nowhereville.

Patriot,NY   January 24th, 2008 2:15 pm ET

Huckabee hasn't had the big bucks all along which indicates he can win without them as long as his "army" perseveres. GO HUCKABEE! You can do it!!!!!!

Jason NYC   January 24th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

Mike does not represent what America is about and has no business being in the White House.

Jo   January 24th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

I admire Huckabee for trying...and if he makes it all the way, he will probably get my vote though I haven't fully made that decision yet. His will to keep going, and the fact that he has done as well as he has with so little funds both show his stamina and willingness to face an uphill battle. Perhaps a theologian in the White House could help ths country – sure can't do any worse that what we've had the past several years.

Peggy   January 24th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

You think we are hated in the world now, if this guy get's in(which I pray every night he won't) we would be despised by the countries who at least tolerate us. Please do not vote for this clown.

jw, canadian,ok   January 24th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

No more Jesus freaks in White House, this latest one sucked.

Holly   January 24th, 2008 12:44 pm ET

I live in Florida and ,frankly, am STILL not sure who I am voting for next Tuesday! I will say that by the third Huckabee "45 second" anti-Romney automated phone call/questionaire, I don't think he's the guy for me! (and actually, I don't know how long it was, because I got tired of it and hung up after 2 minutes!) No wonder his money is dwindling! I do know that our candidates need to focus a little more on the issues, and less on personal attacks (replubican and democrat alike). How are we to believe that they will be able to change ANYTHING, if they can't even play well with others while vying for the job?

Al, Sacramento Ca   January 24th, 2008 12:20 pm ET

Hopefully his is done after Florida. The last thing this country needs is another Evangelica in the white house, let alone another Republican.

FreeDumb   January 24th, 2008 12:17 pm ET

Ron Paul has raised more money in 1 day this month than he has all month yet gets no media attn.
What is wrong with this picture???

RON PAUL – RON PAUL – RON PAUL...
He raised more money last quarter then ANY OTHER REPUBLICAN CANIDATE!!!
Placed 2nd in L.A.

You remind me of FAUX ...

Roy   January 24th, 2008 12:15 pm ET

Huckabee's "scrappy little army" is a bunch of neochristian dominionist who want to overthrow the Constitution and make America their own private theocracy. Let's hope joe-six-pack has more sense this time around not to be manipulated by religious charlatans.

steve addison - wilmington, nc   January 24th, 2008 12:13 pm ET

No one likes Mike.
Everyone that understands his failed record on illegal immigrants and economic policies as a governor of Arkansas. Why do you think no one heard of him 6 months ago? Absolute zero.

Andy   January 24th, 2008 11:58 am ET

Huckabee is nearly as polarizing as Hillary. He is also not a Conservative, likes to raise taxes, and lacks support in the only state he has worked in. Huckabee's first and last win will be Iowa.

John from CT   January 24th, 2008 11:56 am ET

I don't agree with his positions on some issues but I hope he is able to stay in the race. He's got a great sense of humor. At least he didn't skip the debate at Morgan State University like some others (McCain, Rudy, and Mitt). How come that is never mentioned? But if he should drop out - its down to 4 ( the three debate skippers and Ron Paul)

Aiken, S.C.   January 24th, 2008 11:54 am ET

Dear Victor,

That statement was taken out of context by the press, imagine that? He was referring to the marriage amendment supporting our values as a nation upon it's founding principles. Please don't believe all the media's distortions of what Mike says; especially don't listen to the biased statements now being made by the formerly "fair and balanced" Fox News shows. Please just check out his views for yourself on his webpage and keep an open mind. Thanks.

B in NC   January 24th, 2008 11:54 am ET

If Governor Huckabee had his way, he would alter the Constitution. The Constitution! You swear on the Bible to uphold the Constitution when you become President, not the other way around. And that's the way it will always be because those of us who love America and respect our Constitution as the law of the land are in the majority.

Gary, Detroit   January 24th, 2008 11:51 am ET

It's time for this "scrappy little army" of bible thumpers to disband, disperse and disappear back into the hills from where they came.

Sal in Phoenix   January 24th, 2008 11:50 am ET

What ever happened to separation of church and state? The thought of having a Baptist minister as president scares me as much as it would to have a Catholic priest as president. Come on folks, this is not what our founding fathers had in mind.

jyfranca   January 24th, 2008 11:50 am ET

huckabee for vice president

Sgt. Pepper, Fort Myers, FL   January 24th, 2008 11:43 am ET

If he's brave enough to oppose the "death penalty" as well as abortion...

He's got the support of me and a lot of other Catholic guitarists!!

Andrew   January 24th, 2008 11:42 am ET

Wow. What we need are some more intelligent people to swamp this comment page, because disillusioned Huckabee fans who think our constitution should be amended to the Bible are out of touch with the rest of the country.

Not only would Huck be destroyed in a national election, we'd see the biggest third party vote in history. I give you all permission to vote for someone else.

Victor Lebanon   January 24th, 2008 11:37 am ET

I'm sorry, Aiken, S.C., but I think Huckabee has already polarized much of the nation with his statements about changing the constitution to match God's will.

Sgt. Pepper, Fort Myers, FL   January 24th, 2008 11:26 am ET

If he can pull in all 200 of Thompson's supporters.

And if he can admit that abortion...and capital punishment are both wrong in the eyes of God......

he may have a fighting chance.....

Otherwise....send him packing with a pat on the back and a bottle of Jack.

Anne T.   January 24th, 2008 11:19 am ET

Mike Huckabee may be a decent governor for a small interior US state where most people think alike, but in our diverse world he is not enough. The best thing he could do is drop his running mate Chuck Norris. The Huck and Chuck show just is not presidential! Their little act grew old very fast.

Iowa's votes were wasted...but I am not surprised!

Aiken, S.C.   January 24th, 2008 11:15 am ET

Governor Huckabee is exactly the kind of President our country is longing for.
He has the intelligence, experience, and leadership skills that can de-polarize this nation like no other candidate can. He is skilled at listening to all sides of an issue first, then comes up with a third alternative that both sides can live with. He was extremely successful in Arkansas, was re-elected twice, improved education, healthcare, and highways, and did it all with honor. Everyone knows how important border security is to our nation at this time. The fact that Duncan Hunter, who has demonstrated in California his success on this issue, is now putting his support behind Mike, speaks volumes about Mike's resolve to make a difference on behalf of our citizens. Mike is sincere and stands up for his beliefs in spite of the Republican elite. He is a man of courage and conviction who can communicate as a leader. He has certainly received my respect, and I sincerely hope that Americans will give him a look on his website. If you just listen to his ideas on the important issue facing us today, I think you will be impressed. Thanks for your time.

Values Voter   January 24th, 2008 11:10 am ET

No one should have to settle for a Romney, McCain, or Rudy.

How would you sleep knowing you will have voted for a RINO?

Vote your values. Vote conservative. Vote for Mike.

America Forever   January 24th, 2008 11:04 am ET

If this article is a "fundraising call" for Mike, I don't know what is. Message to camp: If he doesn't bring in the cash, he's not wanted. Have him go back and get the college degree (in geography) and have him serve time with the "other" religious people of this country, the elderly (McCain), blacks and gays, and maybe, just maybe, we'll look at him again in 8 years.

Conservative Joe, Tampa, FL   January 24th, 2008 10:51 am ET

Word out of Florida is that Huckabee supporters are flocking to Romney at the direction of the pro-life leaders in northern Florida. Giuliani and McCain have been longtime enemies of the Christian, pro-life movement and Romney is seen as their best chance.

Go Romney in '08!

Anyone who wants to amend the constitution for god's will does not have my vote, and frankly does not deserve to be president.

jw, canadian,ok   January 24th, 2008 10:19 am ET

Surrender Huck, don't be a fool.

David, Gilbert Arizona   January 24th, 2008 10:15 am ET

Huckabee became his own worst enemy by making comments about the confederate flag and what critics could do with the pole. Instead, it looks like the voters have told Huckabee what to with the pole. He also made a blatantly false statement about Pakistani's being the largest group of illegal immigrants into the United States second only to the people directly South of the border.

Huckabee actually has some very interesting policy ideas. Unfortunately he doesn't do his homework regarding international affairs nor does he seem to take into consideration that the pandering he may do to get votes in the South will turn off a vastly large amount of voters across the country.

Too bad. I liked Huckabee but in the end he just doesn't come across very presidential.

Tim   January 24th, 2008 10:12 am ET

Mike you tried but nobody can run on 0 $$$$. You don't have what it takes to win. Pack it in now and save what you have left.

Milton, Harrisburg, PA   January 24th, 2008 10:09 am ET

Evangelical support is a double-edged sword. It will get you halfway to the goal, but you need a coalition of another group or you are doomed. His anti-abortion/misogynistic/anti-science/Bible-and-Constitution merging ideas (aka social conservatism) are a bit too close to the theocratic governments that breed the very terrorists we are trying to fight.

David, Oregon City   January 24th, 2008 10:03 am ET

This story could not be more untrue. Mike Huckabee's supporters don't need Wall Street or the Beltway's money to win him the White House. Don't vote for Mike Huckabee if you are looking for more of the same from McCain!

Melissa   January 24th, 2008 9:59 am ET

Huckabee's campaign really has a small amount of media coverage, but we are a LARGE group of Huckabee supporters/volunteers. That even if the finances aren't pouring in, this campaign is running because WE BELIEVE and we work for the cause. We are Huck's Army!! We are proud! Mike Huckabee is just what this country needs. He is not having difficulty with his "scrappy little army" moving foward. If the media spent one day covering us, the world would see that. But they sure don't want to show it!!! Why wouldn't the media want to show a presidential candidate that can do this well, and come this far without the millions, -must not be good tv! I myself look at all the volunteers, who work tirelessly and think HOW AWESOME! This is America, and we are participating in a GREAT process! To think this candidate has made it this far, and his financial situation has been the same from the begining. That sure must be some kind of "scrappy little army!" Go Huck's Army-let's show them what we got!!!

robert   January 24th, 2008 9:58 am ET

Huckabee needs to draw in all of Thompsons support as well a recruiting new parents with his populist message.

William Pepper   January 24th, 2008 9:52 am ET

Did I wake up in a third world country? The last time I checked one of the most important principals of a democracy is the right to vote and the right to have your vote count. The actions of the Republican and Democratic Parties as it pertains to Florida elections and delegates to their conventions in my estimation amount to ballot theft. It is my vote, not theirs to do with as they wish. Where is the court system, the ACLU, the politicians, and more importantly the people.. As a twenty year Marine I have never wittnessed a more unbelievable attack on our country and our form of government , yet no one seems to care.

Help!!!

Florida for Huckabee   January 24th, 2008 9:52 am ET

Thank you Duncan Hunter for your insight, you too are a man of distinction and integrity. Mike Huckabee is the only candidate that has a chance in the General Election. Mike Huckabee inherited a fiscal nightmare in Arkansas; the infrastructure was on the verge of collapse and brought the states educational system from 49th to 8th during his tenure. He cut taxes and lowered the deficit while balancing the budget, how can anyone say that he's not a fiscal conservative? Let us not forget, "read my lips, no new taxes" after which was that largest tax increase in history. The American people have to realize that in order to recover from the last 7 years that sacrifice will be mandatory. The difference will be that Mike Huckabee will be honest and straight forward with the American people, which is what we expect from our President.

The Clinton's are old news, while Mike Huckabee represents new views that will enable America to strengthen and restore her credibility in the world.

Mike Huckabee is the only candidate running, from either party, who will place people above politics. With our troops being shot at and killed on foreign soil, I don't want my candidate taking pot shots at opponents; stick to the issues or stand down. Neither do I want my candidate having a short fuse while focusing on long term solutions and goals for the Country.

Fred Thompson took the SC Primary from Mike Huckabee and gave it to his friend John McCain. While the list of candidates is shrinking, it's important to realize that as a nation, we have not elected a President who held a seat in the Senate since JFK. I hope and pray that Florida gets it right!

Democracy is two wolves and a lamb debating on what to have for lunch, Liberty is a well armed lamb contesting the vote.

Mark   January 24th, 2008 9:47 am ET

This shows his true level of support. The results in Iowa don't matter. Americans as a whole do not support him. Look at who is being supported financially and that will tell you more about this race than what the 'fair and balanced' polls will tell you.

Ron Paul has more support than any other GOP candidate based on fourth quarter fundraising. He raised another $1.85 million in one day this week.

That is support.

S.B. Stein E.B. NJ   January 24th, 2008 9:38 am ET

Huckabee needs to draw the people that were supporting Thompson (who ever they were and not a whole lot of them) to come over to him. It is not just the people to vote for Huckabee, but also the financial supporters as well. Anyone who endorsed Thompson first should be persuaded by the Huckabee campaign to endorse Huckabee. If that doesn't happen, then it is going to be a lot harder for Huckabee to get anywhere.

Eric, Boston MA   January 24th, 2008 9:36 am ET

Enough of this wannabee Christian soldier. I have no problem with people being Christian, I'm one of them. But to run a presidential campaign so chock-full of theology just doesn't make much sense. Why does this guy get any media coverage anyways? He gets more coverage than Romney, a much more viable candidate. Huckabee can and did win (he probably couldn't now) IA and Deep South states (we'll see) but he has no broad appeal. So stop it media in making us try to think that this guy has anything going for him. He's out after Super Tuesday.

Chris, Bethesda, Maryland   January 24th, 2008 9:35 am ET

For someone with no money and no support from the Republican establishment, especially the big business world, he's done very well indeed. Don't underestimate him. South Carolina knocked him down, but not out; no doubt he'll lose Florida too, but there's always Super Tuesday.

Chris, Jacksonville   January 24th, 2008 9:31 am ET

I live in a very conservative part of Florida and you would hardly know he was in the race. Giuliani has been basically shrugged off too.

This is going to come down to Mitt and McCain.

As an Independent all I can do is shake my head.

We have over 300 million people in this country and THIS is the best we can do?

We need a viable third party desperately.

Fred   January 24th, 2008 9:30 am ET

You can like Mike all you want. He just isn't what the USA needs for our next President.

jay, Snellville, GA   January 24th, 2008 9:29 am ET

Its really strange to me that homeschoolers back Huckabee since he is a No Child Left Behind guy....

It would be smarter to back Dr. Paul he promotes tax credits for Home Schoolers and has always promoted educational choices.
