(CNN) — The New York Times is endorsing hometown senator Hillary Clinton, but picked Republican John McCain over former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, for their party's presidential nominations in editorials published on the paper's Web site Thursday night, moments before the Republican presidential debate in Florida began.

The editorial board — which frequently clashed with Giuliani during his two mayoral terms — devoted the heart of its endorsement of McCain to a brutal repudiation of the New York Republican. "The real Mr. Giuliani, whom many New Yorkers came to know and mistrust, is a narrow, obsessively secretive, vindictive man who saw no need to limit police power. …Mr. Giuliani’s arrogance and bad judgment are breathtaking.

"The Rudolph Giuliani of 2008 first shamelessly turned the horror of 9/11 into a lucrative business, with a secret client list, then exploited his city’s and the country’s nightmare to promote his presidential campaign."

The paper said it disagreed with McCain over many issues but that "with a record of working across the aisle to develop sound bipartisan legislation, he would offer a choice to a broader range of Americans than the rest of the Republican field."

On the Democratic side, the Times called Clinton "the best choice for the Democratic Party as it tries to regain the White House."

It said Barack Obama had built an "exciting campaign around the notion of change, but holds no monopoly on ideas that would repair the governing of America."

Clinton, wrote the editorial board, "sometimes overstates the importance of résumé," but "hearing her talk about the presidency, her policies and answers for America’s big problems, we are hugely impressed by the depth of her knowledge, by the force of her intellect and by the breadth of, yes, her experience.

"We know that she is capable of both uniting and leading."

The Times, which backed Clinton in both her 2000 and 2006 Senate bids, also urged her to "take the lead in changing the tone of the campaign."

New York's voters head to the polls on Super Tuesday, February 5.

UPDATE: Shortly after the endorsement was posted, several opposing campaigns, including Rudy Giuliani's, issued releases highlighting it — since the support of the paper's liberal editorial board is not necessarily a helpful one for a GOP presidential candidate.

The Giuliani campaign even included a link to the article — despite the piece's attacks on the former mayor and his record.

We all know the integrity of the New York times. They are a Liberal biased newspaper that hates republicans. They picked him because he is more liberal than the rest of his party.

Not a stupid Democrat   January 25th, 2008 4:42 pm ET

CNN, my comment has been in moderation for hours now. Post it please!

New Yorker, NYC, NY   January 25th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

No I don't

People refer to Hilary as Hilary Rodham Clinton
Barack Hussein , Obama Obama

I just letting People know his whole name.
I have met both Candidates in NYC. What put me off about Obama were his comments to Senator Clinton and referring her as the Senator from Punjab. I am an African American and I am married to Indian-American. That comment really pissed me off. If he admits that he didn’t say then his surrogates did. If the Obama people say the surrogates are not linked to campaign well they can’t have both ways. When Clinton Surrogates say something bad about Obama they say Clinton said. When Obama surrogates say thing about Hillary Clinton they blame its surrogates.
Obama started the whole race thing. The obama people attack Clinton that well respected in NYC. Like Rep. Charlie Rangel. They try to swift boat his achievement. Isn’t Swift boating what Republican do. I thought obama and his Supporter were against that. Well I thought Republicans were the enemy not Democrats. I mean why I would want Republicans to unite with Dems. Weren’t they the one that cause this disaster in first place? I loved that speech that Al Sharpton made on the 2004 DNC Convention . Look at what Obama had said, “ I am going for the Anti-Hillary vote. “ That is a Uniter. I think bill Clinton has every right attack Obama. I would’ve done same thing when someone attacks my wife. I thought men were suppose open door s for women not attacks them. My mother taught to be respectable of women. Some people here say that I am betraying my own race in voting for Hillary Clinton well I love my country more. I am not going to interject race into this election.

Jack   January 25th, 2008 4:06 pm ET

I canceled my subscription to the NYT this morning. I cited my reason, i.e. the endorsment of HIlliary and the guy didn't know which rebuttal to use on me, which was amusing.

BOYCOTT the NY times! I love the paper and have been a reader since I was a teenager in NJ, however they made a bad decision in endorsing Hilliary. She obviously represents our current status quo and no were in their editorial do they mention what the result of her candidacy will be: 4 MORE YEARS OF PARTISIAN POLITICS, NOTHING WILL GET DONE.

This is beyond irresponsible on the time's part and sounds like Friedmann, Rich and Dowd made the pick b/c I know that Brooks and Herbert are Obama enthusiasts. This feels very Judith Miller - esque, i.e. I wonder if they were paid off…

You might as well read the Washinton post b/c it doesn't get more Washinton than this.

VA BEACH   January 25th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

YEA HILLARY … YOU GO GIRL.. ..Outstanding job New York Times for speaking out with support for Hillary. I have always voted republican but on February 12 here in the Virginia primarys I am voting for Hillary. I will however only support the democratic party if she gets the nomination!!! I believe in Hillary, she is ready to lead, optimistic about this country and so lets take a chance.

President Clinton did a lot of good for this country and some folks need to remember where their loyalty should be! The way I see it is when Hillary gets into office we will have two great politicians leading this country for the price of one!!!.

GO HILLARY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hillary Clinton 2008

BabyMagic   January 25th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

If Bill Clinton stayed home and didn't campaign for Hillary everyone would be saying "Hey look at that, even her own husband doesn't think she should be President." But because he is out there, everyone is talking about how we have 2 Clintons vieing for the Presidency. FYI folks - Hillary Clinton's name is on the ballot; Hillary Clinton is the one who is standing up to the "boys" in the debates and kicking their butts on quite a few of the real issues; Hillary Clinton will be the one making the Inaugural Address in just under 1 year from now; AND Hillary Clinton will be running the country while her husband sits back and looks pretty!

And to those who say that they are cancelling their NYT subscription because of this endorsement - I'm sure NYT will miss your business. . .NOT! You are some sad people.

I for one never really paid much attention to the New York Times until this, but I am going to call and subscribe; good choices for endorsment.

davmon   January 25th, 2008 2:41 pm ET

As an A merican I think we as a people are tired of the Clintons, we need a new president who has a diffrent vision for A merica and that person is Barack Obama no more Clintons we are a democratized nation and not a monarchy. So vote no to the Clintons and the Bushes no more.

Linda   January 25th, 2008 2:23 pm ET

It seems to me that it is too early for any newspaper to endorse a candidate, Can't they wait at least until the primaries are over. I am undecided as of now and I feel the media and now the newspapers are trying to decide who the candidates will be. Give me a break, voters do count, at least they should.!

mat   January 25th, 2008 2:13 pm ET

It was pay back time for NYtimes. After all Hillary has done so many favors to another corporation-NYT. I would be surprised if NYT had NOT endorsed her!
Hillary also did many favors to New York, she outsourced the jobs of upstate NY to India and put Americans out of work. She has promised to continue outsourcing.
Supporting a women is different from supporting Clintons. Look at their record. Look how diverse their contributors are: Chinese political agents, Indian IT/outsourcing agents, Dubai corporates, and the list goes on and on. MANY CORPORATIONS AND LOBBYIES HAVE A LOT TO LOSE IF HILLAR LOOSES. Clintons want to build a dynasty that could start from 2009 and could continue well into 2025-Do the math yourself. It is nothing personal about Clintons that bothers people. It's their well entrenched intentions to build the CLINTON EMPIRE. To do that Clintons can go to any extent. UNFORTUNATELY THOSE WHO ARE SUPPORTING HILLARY ARE TOO NICE AND CLEAN HEARTED PEOPLE WHO HAVE NOT UNDERSTOOD HILLARY AND BILL CLINTONS LONG TERM PLANS.

Let someone either Edward or Obama to take charge.

Jake, California   January 25th, 2008 2:11 pm ET

It is shameful for a woman to lie…shame on Hillary Clinton, she'll never be president of this country.

In fact, electing her is just a continuation of male dominance because Bill will run the White House..not her!

Yea Right   January 25th, 2008 2:02 pm ET

How can anybody trust either a Clinton and mostly McCain, who is on both sides of ever issue. I saw him once on this show at some college, where before the commercial break he said he was for gay marriage and after the break when they came back he said that he meant that he was not for gay marriage, I was dumb -founded by this guy, what a fake!

okplayer   January 25th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

I admired Bill when he was a president. Even after the scandal - I stood by him. Seeing this campaign and the clinton political machine drag a potential great democratic leader to the sewer I just can't stomach to vote for the clintons.

They are too power hungry and feel entitled to the white house and can't stand competition. A great democracy like we have shouldn't rely on two families to run the excecutive office. Over 20 years with Bush-Clinton-Cliton-Bush… enough already.

I vow as a democrat that I will do whatever it takes to make sure the clintons never see the White House. If that means voting for a republican - so be it. I'm sick of slash-and burn politics. Time to take a stand.

Latino_Moderate_In_DC   January 25th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

Yes, Obama is a refreshing "new" face (nationally, at least) and very likeable. But having seen for years seen Hillary's work and commitment, and come to admire her despite the fire she's taken from many, she's the one who is both ready now and once elected to lead the way. Obama needs more than a bit experience on the domestic and foreign policy front - he'd be great down the road.
Viva Hillary!

Tee Darling   January 25th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

Excellent choice on the Democrat side. I just cannot wait till this November to vote for Hillary Clinton and vote all the Republicans out of office. America is suffering and bleeding now because of the policies of this Bush administration. Bush and his republicans care about the top 1 percent rich people in this country. SHAME ON THE REPUBLICANS!!!

Les Holcomb   January 25th, 2008 12:50 pm ET

This type of endorsement for the Clintons is a shabby effort to affect South Carolina outcomes and other state primaries going forward. It isn't racism, but smells a bit like "white privilege" and "king or queen making".

The Times has disappointed our family. It has marginalized itself now as a newspaper which we have admired, by acting like the Des Moines or New Hampshire papers did.

In their second lives as businesses, Newspapers are in great financial distress. Like other corporations they must do what they must do to preserve themselves as, we the consumers turn to blogs like this to get and make sense of the news.

This morning we voted by terminating our subscription after decades. We will now have two NYC newspaper to follow at the local library.

Both Senators Clinton and Obama are remarkable and qualified Democratic candidates. Unfortunately in doing what they did the NYTimes indicates that Senator Clinton means "business as usual".

ernest   January 25th, 2008 12:16 pm ET

This whole argument about Bill Clinton playing the race card puzzles me, the only thing i have seen him do is question Barack's record, since when questioning a politician on his record become race baiting, as a black man i think those saying that and Barack's camp sending links to say he is injecting race shows me that Barack is the one using race as an issue. Grow up, this is politics, i have seen worse and there will be worse if you become the nominee, > The reason you are losing the white vote Barac is because white people see you playing the race victim when there is no evidence of the Clintons using race and it turned them off , so defend your record but stop getting people to ask Bill Clinton to pipe down, they are doing what has done in politics forever, imagine that a campaign that does not distort their oponents records, and the media is eating it up Bill vs Obama, please , you cant talk experience and issues with Clinton so you have decided to make Clinton the issue , it wil not work cos Obama its showing everyone that u r a politician, Hillary wins and i will be glad for it.

Question? What ever happened to impartial media? This is kinda blatant. What if ABC endorses Hillary and then airs 100 hours of commercials for her, is that fair? Media should never, ever, ever, endorse anything, ever. How can you believe what they print.

Would you let the wife of a brain surgeon operate on you….Hillary's experience is a wife…not even a wife as she was cheated on. Not even sure what I would categorize this manipulative beast. The New York Times is bought by the Clinton machine.
_______________________________________________________________

Yes, if the wife is also a brain surgeon, duh. If you think all that Hillary did in the White House was bake cookies, you need to wake up.
And I thought that's what a marriage is–for two people to be husband and wife. Just because Bill cheated on her does not make him not her husband….Last time I checked they are still married.
You must be an Obama supporter or a Republican.

km   January 25th, 2008 11:09 am ET

Hello Democrats. Do you really think America is ready for a black president? I am a republican but I'm sick of how they have run things. I decided to vote democrat this time and so have some of my friends. However, we are from SC where for the most part we (blacks and whites) do not like each other. That is what the primary here has turned into. I don't care what you may have heard. I have lived here all my life and know how we dislike each other. So the majority is white (HIllary) or black (Obama) and if he wins the nomination many here and around the country will go back to republican just to keep him out. Sad but VERY true.

Jim   January 25th, 2008 11:04 am ET

I'd be careful of the word 'hometown' with Senator Clinton. I believe she's from Arkansas.

Dan, NJ   January 25th, 2008 10:39 am ET

That really seems like a luke-warm endorsement from the NYT. Establishment liberals seem to say:

1. Hillary has exagerated the value of her resume, meaning she doesn't have the "experience" she claims and the "experience" she does have does not have the value she claims. Despite the endorsement, the NYT has made the charge that Hillary has misled voters about her "experience."

2. Hillary should lead in changing the tone of her campaign, meaning she has led a dirty and negative campaign. Despite the endorsement, the NYT has made the charge that Hillary has rebuked the message of change in favor of the same old politics.

For Kyu Reisch,

Republicans want Hillary to get the nomination. She motivates the Rep. voter base to vote against her, drives Independents to vote Rep. (note how many Independents hav evoted against her) and alienates a number of Dems. Her unfavorable numbers are in the mid 40's nationally, meaning the Reps only have to sway 5-10 percent of the vote to retain the White House. That's math, not opinion.

Lawdog90, Chesapeake, VA   January 25th, 2008 10:21 am ET

While this is not great news, the good news is that Rudy didn't get the endorsement. It's another indication that Rudy's toast! Rudy down, Mitt to go!

NYT spoke nothing but the truth about Giuliani. Exploiting such a horrific crime and claiming to be a hero, is a crime in itself. How could anyone trust Giuliani, where is his sense of pride and value of life.

Find Your Voice   January 25th, 2008 9:37 am ET

It's a very sad day in journalism when integrity to the truth, and ethics concerning the public's right to know - seems to no longer matter.

Perhaps Eleanor Roosevelt has words of wisdom for Democrats, and in particular to the journalists of the NY Times editorial board who support a Clinton candidacy:

“ I think I learned …that practically no one in the world is entirely bad or entirely good, and that motives are often more important than actions…" (Eleanor Roosevelt).

In addressing the arrogance of those who would deem themselves as somehow being "owed" the highest office in our land, while literally deceiving the American public, Eleanor Roosevelt might have this to say:

“The outstanding issue today is much as it was in Jefferson’s day – trust in the people or fear of the people…
Is the Government to be in the hands of the aristocrats…or shall it again be in the hands of the people ……who will be free, responsible citizens..? "

We need a leader who is willing to serve the interests of the people, not a candidate who serves her own self-interests, as took place with the attempts to suppress the voters voice by Clinton-surrogates who sought to silence the Culinary Workers in Nevada.Obama – all because they dared to choose Obama for their candidate for President!

Obama for President because Integrity, Truthfulness, honorable conduct and Ethics still matter to the voters, and to the will of the American people!

NYT ENDORSES CLINTON

HEY CNN/OBAMA NETWORK WHY COULDNT YOU POST WHAT THE OTHER NEWS OUTLET POSTED?

MSNBC/WALL STREE JOURNAL HILLARY LEADS OBAMA BY 14%

LATIME/BLOOMBERG POLL HILLARY LEADS MCCAIN BY 4%
ONLY DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE TO LEAD MCCAIN!!!

SOMETHING TELLS ME OBAMA WILL START TALKING LESS ABOUT HILLARY AND RACE AND MORE ABOUT ISSUES NOW…I GUESS THAT CARD DIDNT WORK FOR HIM….REMEMBER TIM RUSSERT IN THE NBC DEBATE ACKNOWLEDGE THAT OBAMA CAMPAIGN STARTED THE RACE ISSUE AND OBAMA AGREED AND SAID "HENCEFORTH IT WILL STOP" HA HA HA!!

IT ALSO SEEMS PEOPLE ARE PICKING UP CNN INDIRECT/DIRECT PROMOTION FOR OBAMA…AND ITS NOT WORKING

A. Harrison   January 25th, 2008 9:11 am ET

I am pleased with this endorsement.

On the Republican side:

If not Huckabee, McCain indeed. My only qualms with McCain is keeping us in Iraq until the year 2100.

On the Democrat side:

Of course Hillary Clinton. Obama has a lot of energy and hope but we have not wiggle room to gamble on him turning his words into action. And after that Tony Rezco bomb, what's really going on Senator? And that's my point, we know nothing about Obama. I rather his dirt come out now than when he is in the general election if he is chosen. We know all the skeletons the Clintons have point blank, I trust knowing their business than not knowing enough about Obama.

Hillary supporters need to consider this fact about the disgruntled voting public of 2008. ONE of the two big-party nominees is going to rebalance the national electoral scale in the same way Reagan did in 1980. Will it be Mitt Romney fro the GOP? Or Barack Obama for the Democrats? Hillary Clinton doesn't have that ability, she doesn't even have the strength to pull together the typical Democratic coalition. If defeating the Republican party is a goal that you value, then you need Barack Obama.

Rob   January 25th, 2008 3:51 am ET

I'm not sure it's a good thing for a republican to get an endorsement from such a liberal newspaper. If we elect McCain or Clinton we will get more of the status quo. It's time for a Washington outsider. Romney has my endorsement.

James Brown ( Independent )   January 25th, 2008 3:35 am ET

Well so much for Clinton and McCain……………LOL………….Evene the people that live in NY hate that paper.

shaun   January 25th, 2008 3:33 am ET

This editorial is a complete farce, laughable at best. Hillary uniting the county? Hillary is the most experienced? If you consider 6 years as a corporate lawyer for walmart, 8 years as a first lady, and 8 years as senator which helped to get absolutely nothing done in congress, then I guess she has ample experience to be the president…president of mcdonnals…This endorsement is clinton bias. It stands for "We remember you bill clinton", but nothing which has anything to do with hillary. This woman has benefited more from someone else's work than anyone I've ever seen in my life, and if this comedy doesn't end soon november's gonna be the biggest disapointment ever.

So because the Republicans hate Hillary people shouldn't vote for her??? I thought we're supposed to be electing a president who can do the job, not because he/she is likable??? As she has said in the debate, the Republicans have been at her for 16 years and much to their dismay she's still there. The people here should grow up and realize that governing a country isn't all about personality. You owe it to the people who need help the most to elect a competent president.

Oh imagine that, what a surprise, and who said the media is liberal. This is just such a joke. Why does any paper come out and endorse anyone? I thought the whole idea of reporting the news was to keep open and unbiased opinion so as to be able to report news and not interpret it., I personally wonder why they ever endorse anyone, for any election it is exactly what they should not be doing.

Femi Leye   January 25th, 2008 2:14 am ET

There are two Clinton's running for Democratic office. Bill had his turn and should
go home and bake cookies! Let Hillary run on her own hot steam and run solo.
They are destroying any chance of getting a Democrat in office. I would not vote for her, though I'm a born Democrat. She waffles too much and menopause will be a big problem! She had already said she would not communicate with enemy country's,
but open communication made Pope John Paul great!
The Clinton's are just a big machine, rolling over the hopes and dreams of voters
who want Obama as President!

The Republican and Karl Rove are preparing as we speak……So enjoy you Clinton lovers the little victory for now b/c there will be no Democratic president in the White House and the 23 seats that are up for the Republican will stay as Republican. And guess what? Nothing will be done.

To the Obama follower who threatens to move to Canada if Hillary Clinton wins, what is he going to do when he comes and finds out that we Canadians have been following the United States elections very closely because as your next door neighbor and ally in the democratic world we know that what happens in your country also affects us. As such we have researched and educated ourselves on the issues , the background, achievements, plans and credibility for leadership of each of your candidates. We are independent- minded and intelligent enough not to let race, gender, or party affiliation affect our preference but many of us believe Hillary Clinton is the right choice and the best change for America and your allies.

I AM SO SHOCKED!!!!! A LIBERAL NEW YORK NEWSPAPER ENDORSING A NEW YORK SENATOR?????? HOW CAN IT BE??????

the fact that the NYT made an issue of remarking that they did not nominate fellow New Yorker Guiliani highlights the natural expectation that someone from the same region is preferred over an outsider. it does not take a genius to realize this. i found it interesting that the article spent half the space justifying why they did not choose Obama instead of straight out explaining why they support Clinton. i wish they would have been more specific as to what her foreign experience entailed, as well as her 35 years of experience.

and as far as her intellect goes, i can tell you that anyone can do research and know details of specific issues. knowledge is easily attained. however, to be able to know your facts and on top of that have the ability to inspire, to work with people who don't agree with you, to maintain integrity, have excellent speaking skills and to gain the respect of the world are qualities that are possessed by few. we need someone in the office who is capable of doing that - and quite frankly i am not sure sen. clinton (and her husband) are the people able to do that.

No surprises here. The times has always ripped Rudy and has always been big Clinton supporters. McCain is the safe bet for them.

Either way these endorsements don't really mean much. NY will vote Dem. in November either way. Hillary will also win the primary. So no big deal.

These races are going to come down to the wire. Hopefully we get some more heated debates / mudslinging like we did the other night.

The last 75 speeches from Obama in a nut shell. Hope, change, togetherness, unity, etc. etc. I was an Obama supporter untill I did a large amount of research on him and his contacts. It did not take long to relize that he is nothing but a politician like the rest. I noticed that people supporting Obama had no clue as to what he is about and his past. He could say I hope one day to drink milk with a cow on the moon and bring unity to the nation and that would be real change. His supporters would wail and cheer. Obama, Obama, Obama having no idea what he just said. As long as the key words about the meeting with the cow had change, hope, unity in there. It got old real quick and I have noticed more and more people realizing this and supporting the Hillary camp. Do the research. Hillary is the GOP's worst nightmare.

Yes to the New York Times for endorsing Hillary Clinton, saying she has the intellect , the ideas and the experience. Its about time that the news media clearly recognizes the abilities of this very smart woman. She can stand on her own inspite of the Clinton legacy! Which in retrospect was Peace and Prosperity.

Now I suppose the TIMES will be called racist by the Obama folks, sad state of affairs for one of the most important Presidential races in modern history.

I agree that Hillary has to stop attacking Obama;s record, on second thought the Clinton campaign should have just said What record, there isn't very much in Obama's past to attack…Nice young, bright and up and coming …perhaps for the Presidency 15 years from now when he matures a bit….

eddie   January 24th, 2008 11:24 pm ET

Nevada endorsement did help Obama. But he did not have the ability to win, even the union used the dirty ads. It mens that he does not have enough experiences. He needs more experiences.

Hillary 08   January 24th, 2008 11:20 pm ET

Just because Hillary is a staunch Democrat does not mean that she can't work with Republicans. This is what she has been doing for 8 years in the Senate. But she is also willing to fight for Democratic values, such as universal health care. Her plan is truly universal, unlike Obama's plan. There are some concepts which cannot start off in the middle.
Obama may be able to make a good speech, but he cannot make Republicans agree to something like universal health care with a good speech. It may produce applause, but in the end they are beholden to their special interests. Some things are too partisan, and no words of "unity" and "hope" can make them less so.
This is what I admire about Hillary. While she can work with Republicans, with issues like universal health care, she is willing to fight for the Democratic stand, so that by the time the bill goes through both Houses of Congress, it does not end up too far to the right.

mary   January 24th, 2008 11:17 pm ET

If Nevada is an example, endorsements don't mean a thing.

If Hillary gets in the WH I bet all her promises of universal health care and all her promises to re-energize the economy will sit stagnant. And we'll be stuck in Iraq forever. Same with John McCain.

Have people forgotten she VOTED for the war in Irag? And didn't she promise that in her first 100 days as First Lady, she'd put forth a universal health care plan? People are just plain stupid!!! They're so enamored of the Clintons, they'd lick the turd off their shoes.

If she steals (oops, I mean wins) the election, the people who voted for her deserve what they get. I'm afraid it will be business and partisanship as usual in Washington. Her "vision" for America is to be President. Obama's vision for America is his true core belief that he can bring people together and move the coutnry in a new direction and he has already. I have Republican friends who say they are voting for Obama. Yey!!

We have just one more chance to set things right in this country and in the world. If Hillary is nominated, my vote will go to John McCain, the lesser of the 2 evils.

But I'm placing my money with Obama.

Go Obama '08!!

The Clinton News Network censored me again! Sorry CNN, I'll go back to looking the other way. Let me know when it's okay to bring up the rest of my comments.

True_Blue   January 24th, 2008 11:08 pm ET

Tell me how the media was able to convince the millions of Hillary's idiotic supporters, that she has the most experience. She has never explained it. She has been a senator for almost two terms, she has about 7 years of political office. Obama has 11 years as of now.

There are scores of other democrats who have literally 20, 30 , and 40 years of real experience and knowledge and intellect. So how is it that American is suddendly convinved that a popular first lady is now ready to be president, with 7 years of political office experience.

Talk about the media twisting things out of control.

If you still have a brain and a soul after this primary, do the right thing and don't vote for Hillary. Not only does she lack political experience, but she is a hate monger and just as divisive as Bush. Case in point, did she try to Unite democrats this election? Did she respect her candidates? Did her husband? Has she ran on issues, or has she divided the Democratic party between those who don't like blacks and those who do?

She's an inexperienced first lady with no negotiation skills who just divided the friggin democratic party on racial news bites.

DONT VOTE FOR THIS CHARLATAN COME THE GENERAL ELECTION. IF ENOUGH OF US PROTEST HER ELECTION, SHE CANNOT WIN THE PRESIDENCY. DO NOT REWARD HER FOR DESTROYING AMERICAS BELIEF THAT WE CAN DO BETTER BY UNITING TOGETHER!

Audrey in Alexandria, Virginia   January 24th, 2008 11:06 pm ET

Well, the New York Observer, newspaper endorsed Senator Obama.

This newspaper gave Hillary complitments however, they said Obama is a candidate who is a true leader and is a candidate who speaks to us like no other candidate has done. It may be on their website. It was a strong impressive endorsement for Obama.

Check it out !!!

Hillary speaks and it is like we all have heard it before.

Obama speaks and it is, refreshing, from the soul with inspiration. It is real and from within. No one can teach you that. That is why we go back again . . . and again to hear him. We want more. And he will always have more that will keep us there listening in the future.

The New York Times is the most popular and respected newspaper, it has won 95 Pulitzer Prizes and often regarded as a national "newspaper of record". They're not going to put their reputation on the line by choosing an incompetent candidate. Clearly, they know that what America needs right now is a president who has knowledge, experience & COMPETENCE to get the daunting job done.

Hillary vs. McCain <—– showdown for the ages!!!!

Robb, New York   January 24th, 2008 11:00 pm ET

What is the New York Times thinking by endorsing Hillary Clinton? They've allegedly been covering the news forever. Can't they see beyond Clinton's resume? Her rhetoric against Obama is just a taste at what we'll get if she God forbid gets to the White House. She'll continue to alienate Republicans and thereby continue the freeze on progress and domestic relations. She'll continue to keep this nation divided and broken. Are they endorsing a broken, divided America? It might be good for future headlines that'll sell papers, but God forbid we sacrifice the bottom line for a good, competent government.

A good, competent government won't be found with Hillary/Bill at the helm. If anything, they'll make the Bush mess worse.

M&Ms   January 24th, 2008 10:59 pm ET

Finally, the largest, most reputable paper in the nation, the NYTs, has the common sense to endorse the MOST QUALIFIED and KNOWLEDGEABLE candidates in either party. Get ready everyone…it's Hillary time! =) Our nation will be repaired and on good standing economically domestically and internationally with our foreign allies who love the Clintons. Hillary invests in our future by investing in our children. That is visionary!!!

As a moderate that leans towards the Republican side, I can say that the two candidates chosen by the New York Times are a dream come true. What more can a voter want.

On the one side, we have an expert in foreign affairs who knows the importance of having a stable Iraq who also is not afraid of going against party lines.

On the other side, we have a very strong candidate who is the only one capable of fixing the health care crisis. Every sensible person knows that everyone needs healthcare. Also, she is sensible enough to realize we can't just up and leave Iraq and made a good move in labeling the Iranian Rev. Guard a terrorist organization. They are supplying weapons openly to kill our troops. What else do we need to see that it is not a ploy of the Bush Administration.

Good picks by the New York Times. They've picked the two STRONGEST candidates.

We need a new political party! The Clinton's represent the old democratic thinking, divisiveness, they play by the rules and get little done. Bill Clinton virtually created Nafta, losing Millions of American jobs. Just listen to how racist Hillary Clinton's supporters are, they are not going to move this country forward in any way. The republicans are, quite literally, bankrupting America to make themselves pervertedly rich.

We need a new party, made up of Neo-Democrats, progressives, independents, and yes, some republicans. We need to make a party that focuses on the people, all the people, of America. We need a party that will focus on smart Economic policies, a party that realizes that bipartisanship and transparency creates the best results in Washington. A party that realizes that when the American people are doing well, then the country is doing well.

More than everything else, we need to throw out these aging political families that have dominated Washington for the past 35 years. We need a new political party!!!!!!

WE NEED A NEW POLITICAL PARTY!!!

ray…glenn beck puts it as "we the people"….hence we can protest in any manner we like…..!!!, including cancelling our nyt subscription hillary has as much experience as my left foot…very divisive….nothing without bill….chose to stick with an adulterer…bad choices(iraq, iran, failed healthcare)., adamant (despite everybody telling her she's wrong on obama and regeanomics choose to air a false ad) and least of all she thinks all americans are idiots and she can play on their intelligence(cry, lie, and divide) this really hurts for her to think that americans are fools and can't see through her politicking…do i need to go on for you? I don't want my daugther growing up looking at hillary as a role model? There are better women than her….gandhi, mary slessor…list is endless my friend…

I knew the NYT has good judgment, despite the occasional Maureen Dowd op-eds. I am more impressed with Hillary each day and less impressed with Obama.
Go Hillary!

The one thing I noticed on with everyones comments is that no one said anything about Rudy Giuliani. Now this is a major New York paper but they pick John McCain and not America's Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Ok people what is wrong with that picture when a major New York City paper wont even endors their former mayor. Vote for Hillary

I LOVE NY

I LOVE HILLARY

GO HRC 2008 !!!!

Yes, Obamabots, we know…..

If it's an endorsement for Obama, it's good.
If it's an endorsement for Clinton, it's bad.

Obama gooooood…..
Clinton baaaaaaaad…….

Kris   January 24th, 2008 10:35 pm ET

I love how people try to say the NY Times endorsed Hillary because she is the senator from NY. Wake up. They had no problem calling out Giuliani for his failures and he was the city's mayor. Use a little common sense people instead of crying because your candidate didn't receive the most important endorsement out of all the papers in this country.

It only took a few minutes for the moderator to check my message. There's no telling whether or not there is checking manually or automatically. If there is an understanding that there is filtering of obscene language or comments, then there's no reason to call CNN KGB.

Bimmer   January 24th, 2008 10:35 pm ET

If networks were tllowed o endorse candidates, CNN would be the first in the block to endorse Obama becuase it thinks the country is not ready for a woman President who will take care of health care and try to balance the budget.

Has anyone else noticed Hillary Clinton's old-lady-painted-on-eyebrows? Nasty. And quite unseemly I might add.

Troy   January 24th, 2008 10:33 pm ET

AMEN to that. I knew my subscrption to the Times is worth every penny !

Go Hillary!!!!!!!

Great for America….Finally we needed the Clinton's FOUR years ago. Those who are still dreaming about a vision for the future…well it takes a whole lot more than a vision to repair what has been going on for 8 years, A Clinton did it before and maybe it will take TWO CLINTON'S to do it again. Great for America!!!! Thank you NY!!!!

Can any one say Hill-ary? Hill-ary! Hill-ary! We indeed need a new face - a woman in the White House, and she is capable of leading on DAY ONE!

All politicians stretch truths and false hoods. But it was the Clinton administration that brought the United States out of the red. And, because of Bush we are facing a recession if things do not change!

IMO I do not know why he wasn't impeached long before this. He has brought disgrace to us and it needs repairment and the only one that can do this is HILLARY!

AMERICA IS A DEMOCRACY NOT A DYNASTY - we need Barack Obama NOW!!!

George H. Bush -Vice President: 1981-1989

George H. Bush - President: 1989 - 1993

William J. Clinton - President: 1993 - 2001

George W. Bush - President: 2001-2009

Hillary R. Clinton - ?President: 2009 - 2017

*36 years of the same two families holding the executive office of the United States of America.

*28 years of the same two families serving as President of the United States of America.

After having the Clintons lie to your face and after having the Bush adminstration lie to your face, why would anyone on earth willingly want to put another liar in the White House??? Wake up people!!! I bet you Hillary supporters are the same people who put George Bush in office for another 4 years. Believe anything you hear.
What a disappointment….

Smart newspaper. Smart lady. I read a blog today where someone said everyone loves to hate Hillary but if you ask them why they don't like her they cant' tell you. He also said he was a Clinton hater until he decided to delve into her background and research what she has done for this country. And after reading his research he found out what an intelligent person and qualified person she is and doesn't understand why she is so disliked and he would be voting for Hillary in 08. I wish more people would check into her background and see what work she has done as I have friends myself that can't say why they dislike her. On the other hand, I don't know how she could be so disliked if she was voted the most admired woman in the world. AS for me, I am a Hillary supporter as I was a Bill supporter. I have met and talked to both of them and I can tell you that they are both very intelligent. She would make a wonderful President and I for one am ready for the peace and prosperity that we had during the Clinton years. Oh yes, I worked for a company one time and the wife of the owner didn't like one of the employees and the owner told her, you don't have to like every employee, you just need good employees that know their job so even if you don't LIKE Hillary, vote for her because she would do a good job.
