 John McCain
John McCain

That was a very strange answer from McCain. Americans are not being killed in South Korea or Germany – they are in Iraq. I didn’t understand it, and I don’t think most viewers will either.

Meanwhile, Huckabee is sounding like Mr. Straight Talk.

I've been saying this for days, but CNN keeps removing my posts ...

Should a candidate's age be a problem? Maybe. John McCain and Ron Paul are both in their early 70's. But, when you vote for John McCain, you vote for John McCain, and when you vote for Ron Paul, you vote for the Constitution. Stop voting for personalities and vote for ideas instead. The concept of individual liberty was always greater than the Founding Fathers who aspired to it, and even now it is an idea that is greater than any candidate. Save the Republic and save the Constitution!

Last night was pathetic...anybody got Freds cell number?

HH, Pittsburgh, PA   January 31st, 2008 11:34 am ET

Soooooo, because McCain suffered as a prisoner of war decades ago we should hand him the Presidency on a golden platter?

He wasn't the only one, but he's made more political hay out of it than anybody.

Dem Ohio   January 31st, 2008 11:31 am ET

People should realize that age and health is a factor in voting.

independentminded   January 31st, 2008 11:17 am ET

Bill evidently doesn't remember history and therefore can't understand the lessons we learned there..

Anna, IL   January 31st, 2008 10:18 am ET

Matt, that's the right explanation regarding Germany and South Korea . I just think that McCain should have been sharper with his response. McCain could have clubbered Romney and had many opportunities to do so, but he didn't. When the question of leadership vs. management came up, McCain should have used the question to his advantage. A corporation's bottom line is profit. A country is not a corporation. Instead, McCain seemed defensive.

I'm an Obama supporter, but McCain is definitely preferable among the Republican candidates, but I feel that he lost a great opportunity. It's a shame that he couldn't make his case and didn't stand up for himself. Why did he back down on his immigration proposal? McCain is liked and respected by many because he's different the other Republicans, but last night he was pandering. I hope the Republican voters can see through the snake oil salesmanship of Romney and vote for McCain.

pay attention Schneider – what could be his point in comparing a current conflict with past conflicts? Gee, I wonder... his point is that America doesn't "pull out", we stabilize the area and then hang out and maintain a presence –> when Iraq is stable there will still be troops present, but less people with little/no combat.

In general people forget that America has troops all over the world because they aren't dying in these other countries so we don't hear about it. A stable Iraq, which is the senator's goal, would be the same situation. If you really didn't understand that maybe you should pay better attention or retire

Jim ( Independent )   January 31st, 2008 3:29 am ET

McCain is a senile angry idiot...............i don't think we need him in control of this countries NUKES !

Huckabee won this debate.

Romney did a good job at making McCain look like the idiot he is.

Ron Paul..................."Loopy as always"

AJ, IL   January 30th, 2008 11:33 pm ET

I understood what McCain was trying to say even though I'm not a political analyst making 150,000 to 300,000 a year. But McCain is out of touch. He is living in the past, Cold War, Korean War and Vietnam War mentality. For example, the difference between say American bases in Germany versus American bases in Iraq is that many other European countries surrounding Germany were against Germany at the time. There was a central government and military to suppress in Germany. The only reliable ally America has in the middle east region is Israel. The rest of the of surrounding middle eastern/Muslim countries have a strong anti-American sentiment. Also, the extreme religious beliefs coupled with the thousands of years of warfare in that area of the world makes it very difficult. Especially since China's and India's economic and military strength is starting show. In 20 to 60 years, China and India could be Superpowers as well as the resurgence of Russia as a major Power.

Matt   January 30th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

McCain's point is when Americans troops fight a war they establish a presence for a long time. We've had soldiers in Germany and Korea for the last 50 years. McCain is saying that the same is true for Iraq- once order is secure all troops are not going to be pulled out. Smart strategy is to keep a good force in Iraq just as America has always done.

For Bill Schneider to say he dosen't understand proves he is an idiot and is trying to mislead the voters.

RayS   January 30th, 2008 9:48 pm ET

This mental lapses is part of aging, McCain seems slow to respond and seems to be calculating . The way he projected himself in this debate is sort of unbecoming an officer.....another lapse...I guessed.

walter smith   January 30th, 2008 9:47 pm ET

McCain rambles and repeats himself.. I believe he is close to dementia unlesss he is just nervous.. In any case, he is not the man for President. He would be worse than Bush unless he is able to surround himself with intelligent people and then listen to them.. Bush never did listen to anyone but he also didn't have smart people as advisers.. or very few.. The only candidates on the Republican side who might do a fair job are Paul and Huckabee!!

Casey   January 30th, 2008 9:45 pm ET

I hope McCain wins. He will be crushed under Hillary's heels.

chuck   January 30th, 2008 9:44 pm ET

McCain wouldn't vote for his own bill! and yet he persists in calling Romney a flip-flopper!

margaret Coyle   January 30th, 2008 9:42 pm ET

bill you are right this was who were they talking to not us

bo miller   January 30th, 2008 9:39 pm ET

I am watching the debate from outside the USA as a foreingner who pays close attention to America's politics.
There is no doubt that Gov Romney is the most polished and competent candidiate in the field. If he adopts Gov Huckabee's tax reform idea America's economic problems will disappear in very short order.
Sen. McCain is a loyal soldier but he represents the past.
America needs a new vision by an energetic successful leader. The world depends on it.
Thank You

margaret Coyle   January 30th, 2008 9:37 pm ET

thanks Anderson but it was a waste of time . I can't tell you how bad it came over.

Looking forward to the Clinton – Obama debate. Seriously give everyone that is running a chance to speak. How in the world are we the undecided supposed to form an opinion?

CousinTone   January 30th, 2008 9:36 pm ET

You need to pay attention, I was. It was relative to long term presence in foreign countries. Your bashing of McCain is bordering on childish.....

Chris Riggs   January 30th, 2008 9:28 pm ET

McCain seems slow. He continues to regurgitate the same points. He isn't sharp mentally. I find that troubling.

Maverick   January 30th, 2008 9:27 pm ET

McCain grins looking at Ron Paul and doesn't understand a thing about what he's saying. McCain as President would be IMO a terrible thing for this great country.

Jim   January 30th, 2008 9:25 pm ET

Paul, the purpose of this blog is to have freee flow of ideas. If you don't like what Bill is saying, then you can choose to log-off. The rest of us enjoy the debate about the debate.

Kirk Loe   January 30th, 2008 9:25 pm ET

My greatest fear is that McCain was in the right place at the right time...but he's not the right candidate. We all thought McCain was on his way out a few months ago...luck, more than skill, seems to determine his candidacy.

Jacques   January 30th, 2008 9:24 pm ET

Hey Schneider, trying to derail things by pushing for Huckabee, eh?

james   January 30th, 2008 9:23 pm ET

i agree... what does economy has to do with being a prisoner of war?

faboo   January 30th, 2008 9:22 pm ET

No, we understood McCain's response. He's stuck in the past.

Sandra   January 30th, 2008 9:22 pm ET

Huckabee is great on many things he's just got some other thoughts that are somewhat scary.

Paul   January 30th, 2008 9:20 pm ET

Please stop. You sound like a biggit now. If you hate McCain so much. Please keep it to yourself. It getting annoying.
