Paper ballots may delay California's Super Tuesday returns.
Paper ballots may delay California's Super Tuesday returns.

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) — Political observers hoping to learn the outcome of California's primaries before bedding down Tuesday may need a pot of late-night coffee.

Polls close in California at 8 p.m., which means folks on the East Coast will have to stay up until 11 p.m. just to see the polls on the West Coast close.

But tallying the ballots could go well into Wednesday morning as county registrars across California are predicting record-breaking turnout.

Also, a move from electronic to paper ballots means many votes in the state will have to be counted the old-fashioned way.

I cannot believe CNN's intentional ignoring of the controversies in LA county last night. I logged on this morning hoping to find a mention - but no! Though the LA Times, AP, and Huffington Post all have the story, CNN pretends not to notice the controversy of the nearly 3/4 million decline-to-state voters whose votes didn't count because election workers neglected to tell them to punch an additional (and hard to see) hole on the ballot.

Way to go CNN. Glad to see yellow journalism is alive and well. What's next? "you furnish the pictures…"

The polling station on USC's campus did not have the proper voter lists and over two thirds of voters had to cast provisional ballots…seems pretty shady! Will our thousands of student votes be counted in California??

This is incredible coverage for this election. Usually a Fox fan, but they have gone nuts over there with bias reporting. I might add, that was CNN's exact problem in the November 2007 elections. But not so tonight. Either you don't know who to push or you have learned your lesson. I will switch to CNN instead of Fox. Except for Greta VanSustern! Thanks for the good coverage and computer information. It is truly awesome. Oh, favorite of all is Anderson Cooper. He always kept me and my family returning to CNN.

Obama MIGHT get a chance IF The Ballot Boxes are EVER deliverd to south central LA. ( Yet another Obama Stronghold) Funny how things always go wrong when the MAYOR who is running a city is a MAJOR Campaigner for the opposition. In My neighborhood here in San Diego the guy with the keys to the polling place didn't even bother to show up on time and people had to leave for work after getting up extra early to vote before going to their jobs. OH did I mention I live in Obama Central??? I am lucky I set my own hours and could drive across San Diego to vote at the registrars office. NOT many people could do that.

I don't care if it takes more time, isn't it far more important that each and every vote gets counted? I think electronic voting machines should be thrown in the trash where they belong. They create nothing but uncertainty in the integrity of our elections. Inked paper ballots work well and really don't take much longer to count. Sometimes the simplest and least expensive solutions are also the best. Long live paper ballots!!!

PS I also voted for John Edwards.

I would also like to state, That we the American People ,all would like to have Change, you know the guy that is presently in the White House Now said in his
running for the Presidency, that he also wanted Change. Well, he gave us Change
He gave us a WAR, Ruined The ECONOMY, Put Us In A Ressesion, and has Cited With The Big Shots Of Health Care, Also Has Put Us In a Tremendous DEFICIT, Which the next President is going to have to work very hard to Streighten it out., Because the Mess is Critical We Have All Suffered with Blood Sweat and Tears, We Have All Lost Family, Friends and Relatives in this Stupid War. We all know someone that has lost their job or are about to lose their home in Foreclosure, That's why we need someone that has Experience, This Job Is Not On The Job Training. That's The Reason Why We Have These Problems Now , because the President we have at the moment did not have Experience.
Let's Get This Country Back America. GO Hillary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

U…………know……….it amazes me at how some of the ballots were mailed, some were not, some were counted, some were not, some polls opened on time, some did not, some machines worked, some did not…………things that make you go hmmmmm

California Independent   February 5th, 2008 11:05 pm ET

Just a note on the absentee issue. We vote absentee for convenience. Some were mailed early, some were not. Some were picked up, early some were not. I picked mine up on Friday and dropped it off yesterday at the election office. Mine will actually be counted before the precincts bring their boxes in.

California Independent   February 5th, 2008 11:01 pm ET

Come on CNN, suck it up and call Missouri. You've been saying for days how important it is. Here's an interesting number….. who has the popular vote and by how many points. Come on CNN. You can do it.

abe   February 5th, 2008 11:01 pm ET

i voted for John Edwards.

jay   February 5th, 2008 11:01 pm ET

The Hispanic Democratic vote has and will always go to the Clintons, because
the Clintons have always helped and opened the doors for the Hispanics and to all kinds of races that exsist. besides they have the expereience that is needed for CHANGE. I still would like to know how Sen Obama Can change something or Issues, That he's never had the pleasure of dealing with. He is Charismatic, but he is all talk. He's Has never delt with anything. Infact I never even heard of him until the presidential race.

Way To Go!!! Democratic Party, Go Hillary

Money   February 5th, 2008 10:57 pm ET

I think the exit polls are showing what most of us fear: the last generation with a racial bias is casting one of its last votes for president. the "Greatest Generation" is also the last to be brought up in a segregated, racially divided America. They mat be good Democrats, but they are unable to pull the lever for a black man, and the awful result could be another Republican presidency.

I am still waiting for someone to address this idea. The racial problem exsts almost exclusively among voters over sixty.

Emmi   February 5th, 2008 10:56 pm ET

Remember….We "need" someone with experience in all the Political Issues, as well, someone who has been in the White House, knows "HOW" the White House is run, as well as This Country!

WE DO NOT HAVE TIME TO "TRAIN" A PRESIDENT. PERIOD. OR GIVE THEM "TIME" TO GAIN EXPERIENCE!

Hillary has what it takes, let her get in there, and clean up this BUSH MESS & Discraced Country !

This Country does not have time for "PRESIDENT BOOT CAMP" for un-experienced candidiates !

Go Hillary ! Kick some American Butt, and any other Country ! Lets get AMERICA BACK !

Dan   February 5th, 2008 10:54 pm ET

We used the punched cards for decades without a problem in California. Then Florida Democrats hung some guy named Chad and screwed up the whole system for everyone.

Ron   February 5th, 2008 10:52 pm ET

Vote with your remote - leave CNN due to their FOX like biased reports -go to another station - email management let them know

Chris Texas   February 5th, 2008 10:48 pm ET

I wish CNN wasn't so Bias'd.

Please stay neutral. I like Obama, but I'd like to point out.

Hillary Clinton turned over 3 red states. Arkansas, Tennessee, and Oklahoma. All 3 of those red states, she won, all 3 of those states she brought in more voters than the GOP.

Run that piece CNN. Some other major news networks are.

polivox   February 5th, 2008 10:41 pm ET

California will certainly be a squeaker!

Not only is the state dealing with a larger-than-expected turnout, but most districts are dealing with paper ballots AND absentee ballots that were completed two weeks ago have not been fully counted.

Note….it is widely anticipated that the majority of those absentee votes will go to Hillary Clinton.
