Returns from California's primary could be delayed because of paper ballots.
Returns from California's primary could be delayed because of paper ballots.

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) – People hoping to stay awake long enough Tuesday to see who won California's primary might have a long night.

Polls close in California at 8 p.m. PT, 11 p.m. on the East Coast. Even those who think they might awaken Wednesday to see results of the Democratic primary might still be waiting.

California is the biggest prize of the 24 states holding primaries and caucuses on Super Tuesday.

Obama in 08'   February 5th, 2008 7:38 am ET

Clintons at it again, but it's difficult to see how it benefits her this time around. Her tears are either a calculated reconstruction of her "reverse Muskie moment" in New Hampshire, which will turn voters off, or they represent another display of emotion that will have people whispering about whether she's up to the job of president if the pressure of the primary campaign has seen her shedding tears twice in three and a half weeks.

Furthermore, it's a bit of a contradiction for Clinton to be constantly misting up and getting verklempt while simultaneously deploying the argument that she's tougher than Barack Obama and can handle whatever the Republicans come at her with in the general election.

Meanwhile, Obama seems to be holding up just fine, thank you very much. And not just because the winds are blowing his direction at the moment. This summer when the polls had him 20 points down and the folks around him began to panic, Obama stayed incredibly cool. After a shocking, even disappointing loss in New Hampshire followed by a hard fought defeat in Nevada, Obama kept his emotions in check, a feat made even more remarkable given that he was under daily attack by the former President as well.

If primary campaigns tell us anything at all, they give us a sense of the temperament of individuals and how they respond to adversity, which might be the most important thing the public needs to know when choosing a president. On that score, at least so far, Obama is acquitting himself much better than Hillary. While she flits back and forth between tears, cackles, and angry attacks, the freshman Senator from Illinois has shown a remarkably even keel.

Here in Britain   February 5th, 2008 8:28 am ET

The coverage of the election by certain US media channels (CNN, Fox, MSNBC) has been nothing short of a disgrace. They consistently favour one candidate over another - no wonder the polls are as close as they are.

The sad thing is that if Hillary Clinton were a man she would have kicked Obama's butt into touch a long time ago - unfortunately the misogynistic press have their own agenda and that means that Obama gets away scot-free whilst Clinton receives criticism.

Obama increasingly reminds me of a politician from these shores - Tony Blair. Obama seems to offer some of the vague hope and generalised dreams that Blair threw around in '97 and for years after…it 'sounds' good, 'looks' good…but the reality and delivery is somewhat harder to swallow.

Walter Lobo   February 5th, 2008 8:35 am ET

She is a truely herself-a very happy candidate for Presidency!

S.B. Stein E.B. NJ   February 5th, 2008 8:47 am ET

There is something to be said to having a paper trail; it can be looked at again if there is a problem. So, it takes a little longer. We are too rushed in some things. The change in when states have their primaries has been for the worse in some cases. I would hope that all of the state push back the dates of their primaries to March or April; with the earliest of the states, Iowa and New Hampshire should be no earlier than the second Tuesday in February.

CHERYL   February 5th, 2008 8:53 am ET

Rooting for Hillary. Did your staff happen to notice that along with all of your biased coverage, that one of your very own, Lou Dobbs. had to remind Wolf Blitzer that he had excluded Romney in his statements

In the history of elections in which I watch closely, I have never seen the likes of Blitzer and Cafferty in their coverage of Hillary and Barrack. Internet blogs constantly refer to the election as the candidates of CNN/Obama against Hillary Clinton.

Wolf goes out of his way to all but frame Hillary in his questioning, but fails to do so to Obama

Laurinda   February 5th, 2008 9:28 am ET

In this day and age wouldn't you think that there would be no paper ballot's? That is ridiculous and Arnold should get up off his arse and change that nonsense. We can send a rocket into space, but can't get rid of the paper ballots. That is how they vote in the third world countries. What does that tell you???

Gina, CA   February 5th, 2008 9:46 am ET

I can wait. Go Hillary!

Right on Day1   February 5th, 2008 9:54 am ET

It's great that people are excited about voting.

But the press is hyping it even though they know the outcome in California.

The truth: Even if the majority of people voting today choose Obama, Hillary will win.

Why? Absentee ballots. Almost 20% were already cast before people got a chance to know Obama.

So the press will say all these polls were wrong. We were in shock.

But truth is, most absentee ballots will be cast by Hillary's base, & give her a 6-10 pt edge. Obama will look like he lost by a lot, even if wins by a little.

I don't blame the press, it's good for the country.

Surrealist, Fort Myers,FL   February 5th, 2008 9:55 am ET

A state as large as California without electronic ballots is no practical.
Can anybody say–hanging chad?
Is the political boiling this time going to be California instead of Florida as in 2000?

Room full of Dems Say Obama has no Accomplishments   February 5th, 2008 10:03 am ET

I have to tell a funny story (funny, not ironic)…..

Last night, we were watching a preference program on Fox. You know, the ones they do with Muntz? They were checking in with a good-sized room of Democrats. One question was, ‘who is the most experienced?” Everyone, but one person, raised their hands.

Here comes the funny part…… The very next question was, “name ONE accomplish of Obama.” The first person was dazed, the second stuttered, the third said “community organizer”, the fourth stammered, one person said Obama gives great speeches, one a great orator, one person was very proud to say Obama is inspirational. The boom microphones kept moving around the room searching. No more input. THE REST were honest, gave up searching and merely shook their heads ‘NO,” Get it? They shook their heads NO.

A ROOM FULL of Democrats could not come up with anything but one community organizer. When it was pointed out to them in frustration that this was not an accomplish, they were some unhappy faces and some ashamed ones.

After viewing a room full of people who could not name on accomplishment of Obama, we are very proud of our votes for Clinton.

With regards to the paper ballots, we take voting seriously, so of course we use paper ballots. We just turned our absentee ballots in yesterday. Even in small town local electons, results aren’t known until the wee hours. We stay up late but usually give up and wait until the morning.

Jeff Spangler, Arlington, VA   February 5th, 2008 10:05 am ET

This push for a "paper trial" is well-intended, based on horror stories from states where elections have been stolen, but most election fraud is caused by people, not machines. I am an Election Officer in Arlington VA where we use touchscreen machines without an auditable paper trial, but it is as good as or better than any other because it is part of a comprehensive systemof writen procedures, training and other security measures. Insistence on paper ballots, or unprecedented voter receipts, is a simplistic approach to the theft of elections, most recently by Bush.

Karen   February 5th, 2008 10:18 am ET

My first prediction…. I am going in to moderation, never to be heard from.

My next predictions….

If Clinton get the popular vote and Obama gets the delegates, Obama wins.
If Clinton gets the delegates and Obama gets the popular vote, Obama wins.
If Clinton gets 75% of the popular vote and Clinton gets 75% of the delegates, Obama wins.

Don't believe me? Just ask CNN's Gloria Borger…

MSNBC said last night that even if Clinton wins, the media will say Obama won. There have been numerous pundits on CNN saying repeatedly that if Clinton wins, Obama wins. Gloria just happens to be one of the most adament about it.

Don't you just love Fox now?

James Nelson   February 5th, 2008 10:19 am ET

Sure, happy…when she isn't weeping for the cameras, that is.

Mike   February 5th, 2008 10:24 am ET

You've got to respect the States that take our voting process seriously - especially the big ones that can swing elections. Those officials are true USA citizens. I can wait until the morning for the results - it is a small price to pay for democracy.

There are some that claim we are in Iraq to bring them democracy and that it is worth spending 100's of billions to do it…..and some of those same people are reluctant to spend a few hundred million to ensure our votes are counted correctly in the USA (which, of course, is necessary in a democracy). If you are one of them…WAKE UP!!!!

Duh   February 5th, 2008 10:25 am ET

Walter Lobo, what this comment appropos of? We're talking about voting, paper ballots. Get over to the Clinton story.

In all seriousness, the machine problems and lack of paper trail has to stop. We've heard the nightmares with the Diebold machines, yet states continue to use them. Why?

New York's being forced to get rid of their old machines, granted they're over 40 years old, but at least they provide a clear trail. Another of Bush's campaign contributors behind this mess as well.

As my grandfather grew up in Oak Park, IL, I'll do a Mayor Richard J. Daley and say "vote early and vote often". What a little election fraud between friends?

Dan   February 5th, 2008 10:29 am ET

Most of the Main Stream Media won't tell you this, but Romney is pushing ahead of McCain in the CA polls.

It's not to late to put a conservative in the White House. McCain has voted liberal on issue after issue, and Huckabee was recently listed on the independent Judicial Watch oraganization's "10 Most corrupt Politicians of 2007″ list.

Vote for Change. Vote Mitt Romney

rabblerouser   February 5th, 2008 10:30 am ET

That's all right - CNN will declare Obama the winner at 6pm EST. Let's see if this post makes it out of moderation…

Wayne, Greenville TX   February 5th, 2008 10:31 am ET

I don't care how long it takes to get the results - as long as the results are accurate, I'd rather get them right than get them fast.

Ry   February 5th, 2008 10:35 am ET

Come on, Obama!

JM, OH   February 5th, 2008 10:47 am ET

Better late than wrong. Ohio, like many other states, uses touchscreen voting machines that have been shown to be widely inaccurate and succeptable to tampering. I hope that Ohio takes California's lead and sides with accuracy over speed.

David, FL   February 5th, 2008 10:53 am ET

so be it. it's better to have ballots or electronic machines with a paper trail than these Diebold machines that do not leave a paper trail and are quite suspect. look at all the irregularities already in NH and here in FL. they found a way to rig it and ran with it.

Jr., California   February 5th, 2008 10:56 am ET

Let the vote manipulation begin!

Lilarose   February 5th, 2008 11:01 am ET

Just look to California's north border and you will find a state called OREGON.

Here in OREGON we are very "progressive" in all things, and one of them is that we vote by mail and have for at least a decade.

We get our ballots a couple of weeks before the national election day and get lots of time to review the ballots and mark them with #2 PENCILS!

No hanging chads!

No tramping through snow or rain to a crowded polling place. We just sit at home and watch the returns on the tube.

We also have a paper trail!

So, come to OREGON–just to visit, but please don't stay!

Carol   February 5th, 2008 11:05 am ET

Here's one CNN won't post…..

It used to be that the pundits felt that whoever won California, New Jersey and New York had the nomination.

Now that Clinton leads in those states, last night CNN states it is no longer true. sigh….

Bukky   February 5th, 2008 11:06 am ET

As long as they count them ALL…. dont care if it takes a week. just get it right.

Brendan H., San Antonio, TX   February 5th, 2008 11:09 am ET

Yes, the paper ballot will slow things down.

It'll slow down Diebold from getting involved as they did in Ohio in 2004.

San Diego   February 5th, 2008 11:33 am ET

VOTE FOR JOHN EDWARDS!! DONT LET THEM FOOL YOU! DON'T LET THEM TAKE YOUR VOICE AWAY FROM YOU!!!!

J. R.   February 5th, 2008 11:39 am ET

There should always at least be a record of what a person voted. If the powers that be want to keep electronic voting fine, but the voting machines should print out who you voted for, in order for the voter to verify that who they wanted to vote for is who they actually voted for. After verifying the results, they hand in the paper for the precinct to keep for any possible recounts.

And Walter, I guess you just commented on the wrong article. It's nice when people stay on topic.

Darth Vadik, CA   February 5th, 2008 11:51 am ET

Good,
I don't care if I have to wait an extra day for result, I just want the results to be CORRECT.

NO MORE VOTING MACHINES. THROW THEM INTO THE SEA.

tomdavie   February 5th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

If Obama is close, then it was a good job.

If Clinton wins by 5% or more, then it was RIGGED.

Dennis will have to come out of retirement and DEMAND a recount

Sharon   February 5th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

Totally agree with the comment left by Here in Britain. Alot of us are really tired of Obama as the media darling.

Hey Britain   February 5th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

If Hillary were a man, Barack would have kicked his butt long ago. But a large black man can't go aggressive against on older white woman in America without alienating a broad swath of the voters.

The thing about Blair, obviously in retrospect a bit of a phoney, is that he was a pretty good approximation, in his presentation, of the real thing. Obama, being the real thing, somewhat resembles Blair as a pretty good approximation of the real thing. If virtue retreated everywhere vice has made a mockery of it, virtue would have no place left to stand.

H. Clinton owes her position entirely to her husband. Vicarious experience of the presidency in no way qualifies one to hold the job. Is there a spouse of a past British Prime Minister you consider qualified? Would you let your surgeon's husband perform brain surgery on you?

Jim, Hangtown,Calif   February 5th, 2008 12:14 pm ET

Yeah ,so what at least we have a paper trail, and pray things don't happen like the did in NH and LA,SC what a shame America is being taken over by the Global Elite.

Larry, GA   February 5th, 2008 12:23 pm ET

This is truly refreshing to see so many people concerned about the outcome of this election. I think we owe President George W. Bush a lot of credit for this. One good thing that he did do for the American people. He inspired us to get out and vote!

WilliamG   February 5th, 2008 12:24 pm ET

Obama increasingly reminds me of Blair's friend Bush. When voters elect brands instead of people, they get what they deserve.

Frustrated in MI   February 5th, 2008 12:29 pm ET

Good, paper ballots… maybe we won't have a repeat of what happened in Ohio in the 2004 election! Don't trust a machine, to easy to manipulate. Count ALL the votes and see who the real winner is. Our vote here in Michigan doesn't count, but that doesn't mean we don't care!

As we all know from those tainted elections past (remember Florida?), paper ballots are incredibly necessary for confirmation of actual votes. The important thing is to know what the PEOPLE of America want.

I want Obama to get his chance to fix the disaster Bush has made our country into!!! I don't want more of the same (McCain), rich people trying to buy their way into a powerful position (Romney), or obligation to big corporations (Clinton).

Obama, you got my vote today!

CDR   February 5th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

The momentum of the movement that is "The Future of America," can only be prolonged by today's events but America is long past overdue for CHANGE.

When the people lead, our leaders will follow! The people are moving and the loosely knitted fabric that is America is becoming quilted ever more tightly into a coalition of everyday people who demand a new direction and more from our leaders. There are those that would leave the fabric divided. There are those that would leave holes in America and allow our Nation to continue to come apart at its stitches. However, the people have chosen to unite for one UNITED STATES and one AMERICA.

We look forward to a future of a a stronger AMERICA where the least of us has opportunity to prosper. Where we re-invest in the foundation of this Nation… that is the American people because without the American people there is no America. This is a Nation governed by the people and for the people and for so long we have not had our voices heard but TODAY WE VOTE for CHANGE. And, the people will prevail over the establishment that has oppressed the everyday American, that has left our children in debt, shipped our jobs oversees, and made it ever so hard to succeed in the Land of Opportunity. Today we are not without HOPE we are not without a VOICE.

PLEASE Get out and BARACK the VOTE for OBAMA and for a Nation United.

California was ready for the paper ballots because their electronic machines were compromised and that's why they have paper ballots as a backup for an accurate count. I trust California to be accurate and Obama will win in the count.

Becky Montgomery   February 5th, 2008 6:59 pm ET

I am disturbed hearing that some Los Angeles polling stations had no ballots? Also–some predominately black districts in New York were not able to vote?

This is not right. I am not mentioning names, but something is funny. One candidate's supporters having trouble in New York, but not the others?
