Schwarzenegger comment on how he and his wife get along politically.
Schwarzenegger comment on how he and his wife get along politically.

(CNN) — It's the ultimate political odd couple: California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a lifelong Republican, and Maria Shriver, a scion of a powerful Democratic family.

This campaign season has only highlighted the split: Schwarzenegger recently endorsed Republican John McCain, while Shriver made a surprise endorsement of Democrat Barack Obama over the weekend.

But though the two are at odds politically, Schwarzenegger said Tuesday he and his wife never argue about politics.

“There’s never an argument," he said as he voted in the California primary. “I think that Maria has always been a Democrat and she has always chosen her candidates. And I always have been a Republican and chosen my candidates. We respect each others’ point of view."

"And I remember when I got married, I made it very clear when I was in front of the altar — I said 'I take this woman in sickness and in health.' That’s her sickness," he said to laughter.

Great comment, Bubba!:) I especially love the part about beating ignorance to death with books!
I don't know that much about Arnold's politics, but I believe Maria has referred to them as a sickness before herself. I'm not sure I buy into the thought that any sort of politicial belief is a sickness (though I do waver when it is W we speak of) but it's obviously a "joke" between them. I think it's a good thing they can talk about it and be so open.
I don't understand why we can't all just agree to disagree. I agree that AJ's and Derwin's comments seemed a little "out there", but it's his opinion and he has a right to it. I'm just so glad that it's not 2004 anymore and I can actually express mine a little now.:) I feel like I live in America again!:)

Joe   February 5th, 2008 7:44 pm ET

I'm sure glad we have Mr. Bush to blame everything on [Nel]. What would we do without him to kick around. Or who would it be if it wasn't him? Oh! I'm sure it would be a republican. So much for trying to bring the country together. The first Lady of Cal. couldn't possibly endorse anyone else. Teddy wouldn't stand for it.

John Marselle,Albuquerque,NM   February 5th, 2008 7:29 pm ET

It's apparent that all is fair in love and war! Arnie has ignited those in support of Mr Obama…those of us who havn't voted yet, well, I just made my mind up…and I'm going to vote for OBAMA! Yes, my wife will vote for him too. We both think the JERK that belittles their wives in public should be put in the penalty box for at least a month. Apparently, his lack of respect for your political family's heritage has a lot to do with his remark …Maria, we think your political courage is just great and we too will support Barack.

Pixie, Murfreesboro, TN   February 5th, 2008 5:46 pm ET

Well it looks like Arnold's got that uncomfortable, not quite funny, awkward humor down, which is great as it's the hallmark of the conservative movement.

Jayson   February 5th, 2008 5:38 pm ET

So Arnie how is that fixing of the broken California system and the debt going? Oh wait, that's right it is just as bad as when you took office. As a Californian I have to truly wonder if this endorsement is a positive or a negative since Schwarzenegger much like McCain plays the parties off each other for their own agendas and often times not for the good of the people that elected them.

alan   February 5th, 2008 5:35 pm ET

Chill out Derwin.
In case you hadn't noticed, the '60s is ancient history, buddy. You need to buy a vowel, or at least a dictionary. That way, at least your idiotic rantings would be gramatically correct.

Herpes is an STD, not a sickness.

Bubba   February 5th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

Derwin, I kinda agree with you, and yet I feel that you are on crack. Let's examine this:
1. Native Americans differed wildly from tribe to tribe. Cherokees were peaceful and wise compared to Mohawks and Sioux of the plains. Mohawks thought non-Mohawks were a lesser race.
2. A lot of anthropologists would agree with you about blacks coming first; however 'negro' blacks seem to be more recent than whites in our race's history. Since we can all interbreed, 'race' is just a word anyway.
3. When the Romans found Britain, the inhabitants were native tribesmen who painted themselves blue. When the British found Africa, the inhabitants were native tribesmen who painted themselves red. The wheel turns . . .
4. If us white people had been barbarians, we wouldn't have wanted slaves and servants. Our complicated culture and traditions made it difficult to accept outsiders as equals.

So, to heck with white OR black supremacy, and death to ignorance can be achieved by beating ignorance with big heavy books until it dies. Ashamed of my history? Hey, I wasn't born until recently, and I didn't do any of that history myself. My focus is on trying not to commit any NEW things to be ashamed of, man.

Frank   February 5th, 2008 4:43 pm ET

Well, I hope Maria divorces Arnold. I hope Hillay divorces Bill as well, that is the only way I would vote for her. Meanwhile, I am going Obama.

Marti San Diego, CA   February 5th, 2008 4:42 pm ET

Sickness is exactly what it is. Socialism eats society's alive, nut often slowly enough that you don't even realize it until it's too late.

sandra longley   February 5th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

Hillarys health care is all inclusive therefore she will be the one to heal the great sickness of Maria, the blindness she suffers from, the weakness of her spirit, the vacentcy of her soul, the yearning of…gosh this is starting to sound like the rallying cry of an Obama old time Revival, bring out the Snakes…

Logical Consideration   February 5th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

To all the posters who criticized Arnie for his "sickness" comment, I have three words. Get. A. Grip.

I am a true-blue Democrat and a UNC fan to boot. Arnold was making a JOKE, which was obvious to anyone with a sense of humor. I've made the same joke to my Republican friends about their political choices. I tease my Duke friends the same way. Republicans have poked fun for years at the Democrats' lack of a sense of humor. They aren't strictly correct, but they do have a point. HAven't you ever seen Matalin and Carville appear together (or separately)? They basically do the same thing all the time and it is funny. It's how people with different political views can get along. I'd bet money Marie teases Arnold right back.

Get a grip. Get over yourselves. Have a laugh. It's really easy.

Jim in SoCal   February 5th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

I'm sure somewhere in the multi-bizillion dollar trust fund set up for Maria and her cousins, there is a clause that requires her to vote as Uncle Ted directs.

I've love to see where all those insanely wealthy, politically liberal people like the Kennedy's have their money stashed (overseas?) in order to avoid losing it to taxes.

A person or family raised with maids, nannies, drivers, endless supply of money, and an inheritance or trust fund beyond belief has no influence on my vote.

SDMom   February 5th, 2008 4:24 pm ET

An Agnostic Democrat   February 5th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

Shayleigh   February 5th, 2008 4:07 pm ET

Hey collectiveWill
you seem to know all of Obama's slogans….Are you a closet Obama supporter or are you just trying to impress us?

If Maria has a sickness, she's finally recovering and supporting a true candidate with integrity that does not conform to the nation's standards of politicians. Obama wants to unite the parties and get some things accomplished for the nation. Much more than I can say for the "hundred years war" mentality of Mr. McCain and the sad state of Republicans.

"The time for change is now."
"Yes we can!"

Obama '08

Brett   February 5th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

The Obama and Clinton supporters obviously aren't aware of their candidates positions. These two are members of the CFR (Council on Foreign Relations) - wake up, do your research.

The CFR is actively pursuing "globalisation" or what the conspiracy nuts would call the New World Order. In a statement made by their president, their goal is to expand globalisation but with that each country must accept less sovereignty. They helped organize the unionization of Europe and they intend to do the same thing with America.

If you want Canada, United States, and Mexico to be one nation under the new North American Union, go ahead and vote for Obama or Hillary. In fact vote for McCain or Romney as well. All of these candidates are CFR members. The CFR has stacked the cards against us in this election so they can have their members controlling every major position in this country.

I fear the day when I must take off my US Army from my uniform and replace it with NAU Army. It is already in the works if you think it is silly, go look it up. NAU by 2010 if we don't fix it! This is why Obama and Hillary talk about change people - wake up.

nick   February 5th, 2008 3:50 pm ET

What's sad is all of you putting Arnold down because his view disagree with is wife's. That's typical Democrat thinking. The governator even said, they don't argue about politics. They respect each other's political differences. So shut up all you friggen idiots who want to put that down. He's no less intelligent than his wife b/c he is a republican. He makes his decisions the same way she does. based off of personal beleifs. And saying that only democrats are true americans is bulls***. The democratic party is more communist than anything else. All of the welfare and social reforms to GIVE everything to everybody. Sounds a lot like the ideals of every communist leader in history. If you give everything to people without them working for it, then you can control their lives. Both of the Democratic front runners in this election are the worst possible presidential candidates in the history of our country.

sherry   February 5th, 2008 3:49 pm ET

shame on you, Arnold!

TOO FUNNY   February 5th, 2008 3:46 pm ET

I have to admit…The Arnold makes me laugh. If we don't have humour, we don't have anything!

Kyle, NYC   February 5th, 2008 3:46 pm ET

Carville & Matilin, Schwarzenegger and Shriver - they're on the inside, and they can get along, why can't we? The fact is that in the halls of power, the men and women who understand this stuff know that by and large the members of both parties have good intentions, and want to do the right thing. They have differences of opinion about what that is, but the villification of (Bush / Hillary) is just a construct in the mind of those who do not understand the issues. Its is much easier to believe that one side is good, the other evil - then you can make your self rightous comments at coctail parties and align yourself with the "good side". More than 80% of Americans do this, although half are aligned with each party.

There really are good epopel on both sides of these debates. Civility is lost in the rush to inflame the public so as to increase viewership, or infotainment brand loyalty.

People, the real issues that threaten our democracy fall along the lines of corporate $ in politics, and both sides are equally guilty. Let's get back to civil discourse, and find good answers. This vilification politics is not only wrong morally, its just stupid - it doesn't describe what's actually going on.

Derwin   February 5th, 2008 3:46 pm ET

This is the product of many years of rule by an oppressive race of barbarians..There children are only one generation from being as lawless as they were and some are still holding up the flag a racism..Black people are the original and we only allowed this race of white supremists take control for a short period of time and then IT"S ALL OVER…

Death to ignorance , hatred, white supremecy! and yes the same old American story..when whites got here there wher already black people and peolpe of color already here..

Remember the Native Ameican's, they were not white or had the mind of supremacy over any race of peopl..You all should continuie to be ashamed of your history..

Me   February 5th, 2008 3:45 pm ET

Gotta respect Arnold. He's a republican who isn't a raving looney beholden to the radical religious right. And it isn't the 1950s, wives aren't property, so it's natural that Maria would make her own decision.

DenDix   February 5th, 2008 3:45 pm ET

I am so sickened by all the polititians! We are in deep trouble and it's scary - our country is in such a mess and we are not even addressing the issues. Personally I am tired of all the conpetition between the parties and that's what the elections are based on - not who is the best candidate! Our great country is heading towards destruction and the generation to follow will be hurt by it. It's too bad that we don't have a candidate who is going to make a difference and not just think about their egos!

dw, I hope you were kidding as Texas is neither the biggest land (Alaska) or population (California) - if not we really need to pump more $$ into our education system.

insoutherncal   February 5th, 2008 3:41 pm ET

Arnold and Maria are a credit to our state, disagreement, discussion and new knowledge found on both sides of the isle or the bedroom is paramount to a democratic government. Thomas Jefferson knew this.

An educated populus is essential to a good Democratic Government, I have researched the candidates and find that Hillary Clinton is my best choice for President.

I challenge Americans to do your own research, not just listen to Maria, Arnold
or God forbid Oprah, your vote is worth more than following any persons point of view, the internet is a great source to review the candiates, their speeches and voting records, except I'm still not sure how to rank all those "present" votes of Obamas in Illinois..

If you do this, whatever candidate you chose will be the right one for you.
And yes, I believe with all my heart that Hillary is the right choice, but then, that's the beauty of democracy, we all have the right to chose.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is a great guy and the true face of the Republican Party. Not low life criminals like Bush.

He is like McCain, a moderate who is liberal-leaning on social issues and conservative-leaning on fiscal which is what the Republican Party used to be about before it was hijacked by the psychotic religious right. Well its time we took it back!

Schwarzenegger should be president! Well, maybe the greatest state needs to become the greatest nation!

Schwarzenegger for President of California!

DSledgeHammer in SC   February 5th, 2008 3:37 pm ET

Forget about Clinton, Obama, Romney, McCain and Huckabee. Write in FRED THOMPSON on Election Day!

Robert Cochrane   February 5th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

dw — define "largest" before calling names. California is the largest in terms of population (13 million more than texas) and, therefore, by the number of delegates available in these primaries. Texas is the second largest in terms of physical size, as Alaska is nearly three times as large. California is third.

As for "greatest", that's entirely subjective. Glad you enjoy Texas. Good for you.

Annette, CA   February 5th, 2008 3:33 pm ET

Sylvia, you can't actually be serious, can you? If you think that Oprah wields influence over the sitting first lady of the nation's largest state, who also just happens to be a member of one of the most powerful families in the history of this nation, then you're the one drinking the kool-aid.

Every time a woman CHOOSES (we have the right to do so, remember?) to support a candidate other than the woman candidate, it doesn't mean that we're doing so just because Oprah told us to.

Personally, I believe that a Hillary presidency sets back the status of professional women in this country. I do not believe that she would make a good president, and I know that that will be reason enough to prevent the right woman from being elected sometime in the future.

Rich W Marietta, GA   February 5th, 2008 3:30 pm ET

Ahnold's endorsement is the only one that matters, nobody cares what the Kennedy clan thinks anymore. They always support the most left wing liberal, so where's the change in that? McCain is the only hope for a better future for the country - he's the only one who has the pragmatism to compromise to get things accomplished and yet still have the principles to stand firm against the terrorists. If anyone thinks electing Clinton or Obama isn't going to just give us 4 more years of partisan gridlock they are smoking something. I'm glad to finally have a moderate choice to vote for instead of a far right / far left polar opposites like we have had the past few elections.

USMC 98-05   February 5th, 2008 3:30 pm ET

Arnold for PRESIDENT!! He would be the best candidate for president!

Hildog   February 5th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Well, Oprah is very powerful. The media has taken over our country.
It began when kennedy won based on his positive TV persona (he was good in many ways). Obama is an amazing person. So is Hillary. So, we should each make our own choice based on gut, policy and heart. But, the fact that the media is so powerful says more about the lazy american mind. We would rather have Oprah tell us what to do than forge ahead. I love Oprah. I just think the endorsements, across the board, are turning the election into the same BS campaign that the Oscars have become. Merit is the key to achievement.

Tommy, FL   February 5th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

This is the direction that I hope our country will head back towards. A time when a Republican is able to be openly friendly towards and admiring of a democrat, and vice versa. "there is not a liberal America and a conservative America. there is the UNITED STATES of America."

The political game of dividing the country by vilifying not only the opponent's position, but also the opponent for holding such a position, is disgraceful.

Nel, I'd like to blame it all on Bush but it started long before his presidency. His administration undoubtedly took it to new levels, though, with post 9/11 "anti-American" arguments and the attacks on "morality" from the conservative christian right.

There is no place for that in our country. Our country is great because of its unique standing as the first and only country in the world to openly encourage dissenting opinions and informed debate. The quashing of such principles in favor of fearmongering and personal attacks is a giant step backwards and will do nothing but harm our country in the long run.

j   February 5th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

Until the Soviet Union fell apart, they controlled all the mental health services and defined differing political opinions as mental illness Since Communism was obviously the one and only correct truth, anyone who preferred a capitalist economy or a two-party system was obviously insane. They were confined to institutions until their brains could be operated on, then what was left was put to work in factories. Nice to see that one of those communists is Governor of California right now, and that he doesn't exempt his wife from his definition of insanity.

It's hate speech, of course, but no one in this groveling country will call him on it. Maybe someone will kill his wife after reading that she's sick and crazy. Maybe it will be AJ? Send his IP to FBI maybe? How about in five years, we round up the conservatives, call them crazy, and lock 'em up? Sound fair to you?

Me neither. Arnold's a nurse-hating tool.

Glenn Doty, Columbia, SC   February 5th, 2008 3:02 pm ET

As much as I disagree with Arnold's national politics (don't know much about him on the state level), he IS very likable… It's not hard to see why he managed to charm CA into voting for him.

I hope it comes down to a McCain vs Obama matchup… I think that would be a nearly equally amicable competition.

America needs to remember how to disagree without hating each other, and both Romney and Clinton promise nothing of the kind.

Jim , Houston   February 5th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

Arnold is a businessman and does not embody conventional republican values or conservativism for that matter. His wife just endorsed the more moderate of the two liberal candidates for office. They are playing both sides of the line knowing that Californians enjoy democratic and republican moderates. Smart move Maria.

Maria is NOT with Obama because of OBAMA but because she is a "friend" of OPRAH. Look intot he Kennedy family history of donations to the campaign. Not even Caroline gave Obama as much money as she did to Hillary.
STOP DRINKING THE KOOL AID
so our next president is going to be selected by OPRAH
that is the real DISGRACE

Sofia   February 5th, 2008 2:55 pm ET

That was not funny Arnold… but one thing, I give Maria a lot of credit for being her own person. I know because my husband has been a republican all his life till Bush. You should have been in my house during the 2000 & 2004 election while I campaign for Gore and Kerry… but we were able to be civil to each other…. Oh yeah,
Go OBAMA…. YES WE CAN!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey AJ … the crimes of the Kennedy's have been dwarfed by the disgraceful war crimes of the current administration.

CA Supporter   February 5th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

AJ - you need a hug.. and some HOPE!

Pay a visit to a Barack rally today - they're all over the place - and get both!

Kevin, Princeton, NJ   February 5th, 2008 2:51 pm ET

PRESINATOR '20!!!

We'll rewrite the Constitution yet!

Ratgurl   February 5th, 2008 2:50 pm ET

Arnie, are you sure that's not YOUR sickness?

dw   February 5th, 2008 2:50 pm ET

When did Hellifornia get to be the largest state? Texas is the largest and greatest dipsh##.

Peace   February 5th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

AJ, can you please polish your language a little bit!!! What you have written about Kennedys family is totally an insult, Why all that hatred!!

keith, washington dc   February 5th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

This, like James Carville and Mary Matalin's marriage, shows that you can be devoutly political and still relate deeply to other people and their opinions. People who categorically abhor anyone of an opposing party are missing the invaluable opportunity for dialogue that is essential lasting progress in our country's politics.

Mike   February 5th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

Lighten up AJ

v   February 5th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

oh Arnie, you so craaaazy.

ALF   February 5th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

AJ you're funny…

While you're at it… Pack up all the Bush's and send their criminal dynasty to Saudi Arabia never to return.

Charles   February 5th, 2008 2:43 pm ET

The "Governator" has spoken!

melanie   February 5th, 2008 2:43 pm ET

Hopeless   February 5th, 2008 2:41 pm ET

when you said alcholic criminal family my first thought was "i didn't know she was a bush.

Nel   February 5th, 2008 2:41 pm ET

Why do Americans hate one another so much. Look at the hatred pouring out of the person called AJ just because Maria endorsed someone that's not his choise. This is all Bush's doing, it's too late for America now, unless Obama or Huckabee is elected. One other person who could bring the country together is Arnold Schwarzenegger.

CD   February 5th, 2008 2:40 pm ET

I like Arnold. I don't agree with his social policies (too close to McCain), but a good guy.

Barbara, New Jersey   February 5th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

I AGREE a.j. WHAT IS TEDDY NOW 80 YEARS OLD, WHAT CHANGE. SAME OLD SAME OLD.

Robert   February 5th, 2008 2:38 pm ET

AJ,
Grow a heart.

AJ   February 5th, 2008 2:35 pm ET

Maria Shriver is a disgrace. Pack her up with the rest of her alcoholic criminal family (Kennedys) and send them to political Siberia.

sharon walker   February 5th, 2008 2:34 pm ET

Dear Friends:

Respectful and dignity for the Governor of the Largest state in the USA,
California. A man who is serving this nation with his life an love.
All who are proud of this nation, this state he is serving for you.

Jose Card - Independent   February 5th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

I will vote for Arnold if he can run.
He doesn't take himself too seriously, but he takes people's business seriously.

I also appreciate his suggestion, "Turn off those Spanish channels."
Arnold truly cares about our future than capitalizes on our future.

Some politicians will make you suffer first and then pretend to be the hero to rescue you for your votes later.

When somebody keeps on telling you sweet words, you have to wonder why.

grammadee   February 5th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

WHO CARES!!! I CANT WAIT UNTIL THIS IS ALL OVER WITH.

WHAT A CHANGE IT WOULD BE IF THE CANDIDATES WOULD STOP THE NAME CALLING, THE FINGER POINTING, THE BACK STABBING, THE DIGGING UP DIRT ACTIVITIES AND SIMPLY TALK ABOUT WHAT THEY WOULD TRY TO ACHIEVE IF THEY WERE ELECTED.

NO WONDER IT'S CALLED DIRTY POLITICS.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   February 5th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

Arnold, just tell it like it is, Maria is a true blue American and knows her politics and that's why she endorses Obama. Maria knows Obama is simply the best.

Charlotte   February 5th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

I AGREE HER SUPPORT OF OBAMA IS A SICKNESS!

COLLECTIVE WILL   February 5th, 2008 2:24 pm ET

Why Bother   February 5th, 2008 2:24 pm ET

COLLECTIVE WILL   February 5th, 2008 2:22 pm ET

Boca   February 5th, 2008 2:20 pm ET

Obama/Schwarzenegger '08

MJ   February 5th, 2008 2:18 pm ET

McCain has Juan Hernandez on his campaign staff. Former Mexican cabinet member who says that 7th Generation Mexican Americans should think of themselves as Mexican first. McCain's campaign treasurer is the founder of Univision spanish language television. Do your homework. I am a republican who will never vote for McAmnesty.

Ron, TX   February 5th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

I'm glad to see a strong woman disagreeing with her husband and backing Barack Obama!

Thanks Maria!

Obama '08!

COLLECTIVE WILL   February 5th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

She HAD the CHANGE BUG!!!

Sis   February 5th, 2008 2:13 pm ET

The Govinator is the one who is sick. His wife has the freedom to pick the candidate who she wants. And as an intelligent woman, she has chosen Obama.
