Obama raised $7.2 million in the first 48 hours after Super Tuesday.
Obama raised $7.2 million in the first 48 hours after Super Tuesday.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) – Democratic Sen. Barack Obama has raised $7.2 million for his presidential campaign since the first polls closed on Super Tuesday night, his campaign said Thursday, a remarkable figure that is causing concern among supporters of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Meanwhile Thursday, the Clinton campaign asked Obama to debate once a week, but he demurred.

Obama, riding a wave of fundraising from large donors and small Internet contributors, also raised $32 million in January.

Clinton acknowledged Wednesday that she loaned her campaign $5 million late last month as Obama was outraising and outspending her heading into Feb. 5 Super Tuesday contests. Some senior staffers on her campaign also are voluntarily forgoing paychecks as the campaign heads into the next round of contests.

While not matching Obama's pace, Clinton also saw an online surge of donations — raising $4 million from 35,000 new contributors since midnight Super Tuesday, Clinton campaign aides said.

Obama and Clinton outpaced all candidates in 2007, with each raising $100 million.

The Obama campaign said on its Web site that $7.2 million has been received since Tuesday evening. Campaign spokesmen said they were confident the figure was accurate.

Buoyed by strong fundraising and a primary calendar in February that plays to his strengths, Obama plans a campaign blitz through a series of states holding contests this weekend and will compete to win primaries in the Mid-Atlantic next week and Hawaii and Wisconsin the following week.

He campaigned in Louisiana Thursday. The state holds its contest Saturday.

Clinton, with less money to spend and less confident of her prospects in the February contests, will instead concentrate on Ohio and Texas, large states with primaries March 4 and where polling shows her with a significant lead. She even is looking ahead to Pennsylvania's primary April 22, believing a large elderly population there will favor the former first lady.

In a sign of Clinton's increasing concern about Obama's growing strength, her campaign manager, Patti Solis, sent a letter Thursday to the Obama campaign seeking five debates between the two candidates before March 4.

"I'm sure we can find a suitable place to meet on the campaign trail," Solis wrote. "There's too much at stake and the issues facing the country are too grave to deny voters the opportunity to see the candidates up close."

Obama rejected a debate proposed as soon as this Sunday to be broadcast on ABC, but his campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Thursday, "there will definitely be more debates, we just haven't set a schedule yet."

Obama has declined an offer to do more one on one debates with Clinton. Hmmm, wonder why…

Nicole   February 7th, 2008 10:33 am ET

He raised 6MILLION!!!!!!!

Holly, Kansas City, MO   February 7th, 2008 10:34 am ET

Why are you guys reporting 3 million and Yahoo reporting 5.8 million and someone else reporting 7 million? I am happy whatever it is, because it means his supporters are behind him until the end. I know I am. But it's just weird, why are there all these different numbers?

Nicole   February 7th, 2008 10:34 am ET

Its 6MILLION!!!!!!! Get it right CNN.

Julia in Eugene, Oregon   February 7th, 2008 10:34 am ET

As of 7:30am PST, he's at $7.3 million and countiing… and a large number of those are every day people like my husband and I who have never before supported any campaign financially. There are $10 donations in there; there are $100 donations in there; some more and some less.

Be a part of this real movement for change…

Lauren   February 7th, 2008 10:34 am ET

Actually, he raised more than $5 million according to his website…

Jeff   February 7th, 2008 10:35 am ET

He actually raised over 5 million in 24 hours and has now raised over 7 million since polls closed on Tuesday!

William   February 7th, 2008 10:36 am ET

Come on people; do you really think these contributions are from the "little people"?

There is something very shady about these contributions and the ones made last month.

Who are his "Large Donors"?

Alex from IL   February 7th, 2008 10:36 am ET

That's nothing, posters on Obama's site are looking to put in 10 million, mostly from small online donations, by midnight tonight (Feb 7th). Apparently, if Billary wants to bring in 5 from her bank, they'll bring 10.

SF, CA   February 7th, 2008 10:37 am ET

Which candidate would even want this man on his/her side?

PJ   February 7th, 2008 10:37 am ET

Wasn't it more like $5+ million?

Mabuhay America   February 7th, 2008 10:37 am ET

SURELY OBAMA'S "MAJOR" GUARRANTORS FOR HIS CAMPAIGN WOULD ASK SOMETHING IN RETURN WHEN THEIR PRESIDENT WILL SEAT (WHERE?) IN HIS SENATE OFFICE…LOL…HRC '08

pj minneapolis   February 7th, 2008 10:38 am ET

shows that Obama supporters from the ground up still believe. and for those who wonder where he gets his money from, he is has an open book policy and the media is able to look into it while Bill raises money from unknown sources for his library and Hillary, after a life of public service, seems to have 5 million to loan herself? and no one is curious about that??

Di   February 7th, 2008 10:39 am ET

So did Clinton!!! Where is your headline for that????

Jeff   February 7th, 2008 10:39 am ET

Actually, by the time they hit the 24 hour mark, the total was right around $6 million. It now stands at $7.4 million since the Tuesday polls closed, and it continues to go up.

Kevin, Kansas City   February 7th, 2008 10:40 am ET

Obama's now raised about $7 million since Super Tuesday.

Bye-bye, Clinton.

Marc   February 7th, 2008 10:40 am ET

Obama has raised over $7.3 million dollars since the polls closed on Tuesday. Why are you using a lower figure?

Dave   February 7th, 2008 10:41 am ET

Hey CNN - get your numbers correct. The last report I saw was that he has actually raised over $7 million.

Jim in the Boonies   February 7th, 2008 10:41 am ET

Obama's momentum got him to statistically even (0.4%) in the popular vote on Super Tuesday, where just a month ago the Hillites were still saying she was "inevitable". How many times did readers here endure "she's ahead in every state .." from the lemmings? She lost more than half of them! Four days ago she wanted a "debate a week". Yesterday we found out why … she has no money and is desperate for free advertising. If one "follows the money" .. LOL .. and the Hillary supporters are painfully aware of where the money is and isn't … its becoming clear that change will happen. Smart money says Obama !

Obamacrat   February 7th, 2008 10:41 am ET

GO OBAMA!

RichmondVAgal   February 7th, 2008 10:41 am ET

Okay, this story is informative, but where is the story about Obama declining to debate Clinton once a week for the next month? Why won't he offer the citizens of America the opportunity to make an informed decision based on issues and facts? One would think that someone with this much ability to raise extreme amounts of money would have the confidence to argue his position every single day of the next month, let alone once a week! Oh well, I guess that he is just afraid that the truth might get out and his 15 minutes of fame will be over.

HIllary Clinton '08

Anonymous   February 7th, 2008 10:42 am ET

Check you numbers, it was higher than that, and is now over 7 million.

Kyle   February 7th, 2008 10:42 am ET

Obama actually raised over $6 million by midnight on February 6, and as of 10:30AM ET, $7.4M.

Jesse   February 7th, 2008 10:42 am ET

Actually, Obama's campaign raised closer to $5 million in 24 hours. The email sent out asking for donations mentions the $3 million that was already raised, but that was well before 24 hours had expired.

It's kinda sad that I can find this out in 2 minutes surfing the net, but CNN pays someone to blog using incorrect information.

WRONGO   February 7th, 2008 10:43 am ET

Obama raised more like $5.5M+ in 24 hours, NOT $3M.

Get your facts straight.

N.N.B.   February 7th, 2008 10:43 am ET

If a certain person is the Democratic nominee, lots of people I know who will not put it in words, will vote for John McCain. Tell Mr. McCain he is missing an untapped group.

Cody Pierce   February 7th, 2008 10:43 am ET

According to the email I received that was tracking it, it was up to $5,618,951 last night.

California Voter   February 7th, 2008 10:43 am ET

Yes, but looks like he is afraid to debate Clinton in Ohio. Apparently, he doesn't want voters to see beyond a fresh face and be challenged to answer questions. He'd rather run 30 second commercials. I guess voters who are affluent and educated don't need to know the facts about their candidate!

(Awaiting moderation I'm sure — let's see if this makes CNN's ticker)

Patty   February 7th, 2008 10:44 am ET

Obama is being funded and promoted by Oprah. He should have money. The media and CNN have made sure he is always displayed in a positive light while they display Hillary always negatively. It is unfair–talk about predjudice! What is Obama going if he should become president—call Oprah to find out what he is to do when he is confronted with a situation. He has no plan—that is why he does not want to debate with Hillary. When he refuses to debate with Hillary and show America what he is NOT made of, he refuses to show America. It's not a slight against Hillary, but a slight against America! But CNN will turn that around to make him look good as they always do.

Stacy Clarks, Texas   February 7th, 2008 10:44 am ET

GO OBAMA!!! MY DONATION WENT TO THAT 3 MILLION!!!!

WE ARE BEHIND YOU ALL THE WAY!!!!

Hillary Supporter   February 7th, 2008 10:44 am ET

What a waste of money! When your record, IF you have a record comes out, HOPEFULLY our concerned citizens will wake up, stop listening to your ramblings, you sound like a preacher, and realize that we need a PROVEN leader to get us out of the mess that we are in. We need change, but in order to be an agent of change and not just a dreamer, you have to have EXPERIENCE to bring about change. Keep dreaming…

J.C.T.   February 7th, 2008 10:44 am ET

IF BARACK OBAMA IS ABLE TO RAISE 3 MILLIONS EVERY 24 HOURS ..
HE SHOULD BE USING THAT MONEY IN STOCK IN GOOGLE…
OR BUY SHARES OF OIL FROM NIGERIA..BUT THIS IS ONLY A DREAM…
OBAMA IS NOT AN ECONOMIST…ALL THIS MILLIONS WILL BE EXPENDED IN
PROPAGAND..TO NAIVE STUDENTS.

democrat_2008   February 7th, 2008 10:45 am ET

And Obama just raised another 3 million in one night. What about all the poor and homeless in this country, this could sure use some of that cash. John Edwards was right to get out of this crazy campaign …This guy OBAMA is begining to Freak me the hell out. I swear its reminding me of a CULT. I listened to his speech and was very weired out by that chick in the background that was swaying and crying like she was touched by the divine word, not to mention his words "We are the ones we've been waiting for," what the heck !!!

Christine Atlanta, Ga.   February 7th, 2008 10:46 am ET

I see that Senator Obama refuses to have debates with Senator Clinton, claiming there have already been 18. To my recollection there has been 1.
Don't voters have the right to hear from the candidates own mouths how they plan to lead?
Not just soundbites from the media or prepared speeches at rallies?

Is it because you don't do so well against Mrs. Clinton one on one Sen. Obama? Your website is gloating about how much money you are bringing in,
how about putting your 'mouth where your money is'.

Brittany Quave   February 7th, 2008 10:46 am ET

I think it's a little ridiculous that presidential candidates can raise so much money and in such a short period of time, just to campaign. Also, people are willing to give up their own paychecks for the sake of a future president? That seems crazy.

JBH   February 7th, 2008 10:47 am ET

DON'T TELL ME, LET ME GUESS. THESE CONTRIBUTIONS COME FROM POOR FOLK, RIGHT? WHEN SOMETHING SOUNDS A LITTLE TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, IT USUALLY IS; THIS DESCRIBES OBAMA.

Brian   February 7th, 2008 10:48 am ET

There's a reason that ALL major news outlets are stating ""Clinton's supporters tend to be white women, lower-income, and Hispanic voters" It's because she has promised them the moon! and who do you think are going to pay for those FREEBIES? WE ARE! and I, for one, am tired of paying for other people! I would like to see this country pay for it's elderly living at the poverty level, the school teachers that have our youth and future in their hands and for AMERICAN born citizens that need help! I'm tired of paying for illegal immigrants and people who flock here! Yes, I feel for them but if we have not taken care of our OWN first, then they need to come second in what we, as Americans, can do for them. Please reconsider if your planning to vote for Clinton. She's a wolf in sheep's clothing with friends waiting in the wings to ride her gravy train…just like they did with Bill. STOP and remember what ALL happened when he was holding the highest office in this land. Impeachment! He was charged with the FEDERAL crime of PERJURY! He can NEVER hold another office in this country because he LIED to this country. I won't even go into the embarressment of women while he was being looked up to by school children…who are NOW of voting age and it shows by the out pouring of young voters! Please listen America to what you already know.

Lilarose   February 7th, 2008 10:48 am ET

What is going on here? The media is really pushing the idea that Hillary Clinton can't raise funds as fast as Obama.

Media, why are you doing this?

I am proud of Hillary that she has accomplished so much on the campaign trail with less money than apparently Obama needs.

This tells me she has her fiscal house in order and she can do the same for our country!

Huckabee is also able to run his campaign without a ridiculous amount of money.

And this is how it should be!

Peter K   February 7th, 2008 10:49 am ET

McCain ran out of campaign money last summer and he still managed to come out as the front runner in the Republican party. After all the media attacks and bias, Hillary didn't crumble. She is so strong that she can withstand any tornadoes coming her way and she will be the winner at the end!

Doug   February 7th, 2008 10:49 am ET

I like this guy. He is not taking the pac money and he is still

kicking Hillbilly's rear end. I am not a liberal, but I respect the man!!

mark   February 7th, 2008 10:49 am ET

At this rate, he could raise 30 million by months end.

James ( Independent )   February 7th, 2008 10:49 am ET

Barack Obama has raised over 7 million dollars just since the polls closed the other night , and that figure is climbing by the minute.

This guy is for real and so are the people behind him. This is a movement unlike anything i have seen in my life time.

Barack 08

Marisa A.   February 7th, 2008 10:50 am ET

I believe that senator Hillary R. Clinton "loaned" her campain $5 million dollars, not because she has confidence, but because she knows that her campaign is weak. Obama is and should be the presidential nominee with or without the delegate's.

Tracy, Texas   February 7th, 2008 10:50 am ET

Talk about putting your money where your mouth is. Barack is an unstoppable force and soon Hillary will succumb to the "movement." Out with the old, in with the new. He is an inspiration to many and that is what America needs right now.

Doug   February 7th, 2008 10:50 am ET

I like this guy. He is not taking lobbyists money and he is still

beating Hillbilly. I am not a liberal, but I respect the man!!

Never little o   February 7th, 2008 10:50 am ET

Brad, Columbia, SC   February 7th, 2008 10:50 am ET

Ito, Yokosuka Japan   February 7th, 2008 10:51 am ET

Go Barack…

Keep on truckin'…you are surviving the Clinton hate and propaganda machine. That is actually more difficult than fighting the Republicans. If you can beat the Clintons, you can beat anybody.

Congrats…I hope the movements keep moving.

Obama and The People   February 7th, 2008 10:51 am ET

I was part of that !!! I AM part of it !!

I have never contributed to a campaign before - and I feel so good about supporting the Obama movement ! I agree with his stands on the issues and I have faith in him that he will change the 'politics as usual' that de facto exluded the American People in favor of lobbyist and interest groups.

Obama'08

Eric, Newtown, PA   February 7th, 2008 10:52 am ET

Your numbers are way off. Obama raised about 6 million in 24 hours, and is now at over 7 million. Looks like Hillary needs to loan her campaign some more money. Time to send Bill back to Kazakhstan!

chris   February 7th, 2008 10:52 am ET

It appears the Obama campaign has raised 7.5 million since the polls closed on Super Tuesday. That's incredible. The movement is growing indeed!

Roy M   February 7th, 2008 10:52 am ET

Its amazing to me that Obomba is getting so much in contributions. I equate this as an anti-Hillary fund raiser. I know alot of people are backing him because of their dislike of Hillary and when election time comes around, you are going to find that Obomba will not be the next president, it will be McCain. The politics in this country is not an issues election, its a popularity contest, and right now Obomba is popular. I can't stand the clown myself and the couple of candidates that would probably do a great job are not so popular. So if you vote, good luck, these elections are getting more and more ridiculous all the time. Say the right things you get elected, you do the right thing and don't get elected, the american way.

Sarah   February 7th, 2008 10:52 am ET

Go Obama! America needs you!

benvictor   February 7th, 2008 10:53 am ET

And, BO says he is the underdog. The cash keeps flowing from his rich benefactors. Cash cows galore; we all wish we had his rich backers. Unfortunately, this means even more bombardment of his TV messages. I can not wait to vote against him just to stop this bombardment and return to peace and tranquility. My prediction: Republicans are uniting now, while the democrats are hopelessly fractured. He will add to the growing schism, and there is no return. His cash largess will ensure this.

LNF Chicago   February 7th, 2008 10:53 am ET

It's a movement people. My whole family is sending $5, $10, $25 whenever we can to help him win this election. We do this with great pride in our hearts.

Xavier, Washington, DC   February 7th, 2008 10:54 am ET

Inspiration = more followers = financial support = larger audiences = more votes.

Hillary, do you still think that inspiration is overrated?

Kevin B.   February 7th, 2008 10:54 am ET

It's important to note that the polls didn't close in California until 8pm on February 5th, at which point, 24 hours later, he had raised over $5 million. Now THAT'S impressive.

Jenn in Ohio   February 7th, 2008 10:55 am ET

3 million? Try over 6.5 million!!!!

Rao   February 7th, 2008 10:55 am ET

Hillary started working for the poor people and not expected for any income as she started her career and how she can loan 5 million dollars for the campaign and where did she find that money just like that.
Instead of crying she just wanted some sympathy and get votes, usual Clintonian affair.

Maim   February 7th, 2008 10:55 am ET

…and Obama has raised over 7 million since Tuesday as of 10am on Thursday morning.

Surrealist, Fort Myers, FL   February 7th, 2008 10:56 am ET

Hmmmm.

Looks as though donors are lining up?

Guess we can see where this is heading!!

jesse   February 7th, 2008 10:56 am ET

Where is all this money coming from??? All these political candidates stress changes need to be done, there are hundreds of thousand of people in our own country hungry and with no health care and Yet, these people are spending millions and millions on campaigns to get elected so that they can screw this country up some more, people lets get real here, this has to stop. This is not a popularity contest in high school; this is about the welfare of this country. Give that money to the people who really need it!!!!! We are head down a path that is going to end with us being a 3rd world country and crumbling just as Rome did. Read your history and stop making the same mistakes. WAKE UP AMERICA!!!!!!

rmh   February 7th, 2008 10:57 am ET

What do you mean $3 million? He raised almost $6 million in the first 24 hours after the polls closed on Tuesday, and now that number is up to over $7 million. Go Obama!

Joseph   February 7th, 2008 10:57 am ET

Money follows momentum.

I think that we'll be hearing a Clinton concession speech soon.

Dennis   February 7th, 2008 10:58 am ET

All this money is impressive, and I have contributed to Obama's campaign. However, I'm beginning to wonder if there isn't a better way to conduct the primaries that wasn't so expensive. All the money that has been spent during the primary season alone could have benefited a number of worthy causes and charities. Picking our President is important, but lets face it, all this money isn't always used to debate issues and further the selection process. I'm going to continue to contribute to campaigns, but I've decied to match my political donations dollar for dollar with donations to the local food bank, shelters, or other worthy charities. I hope others will do the same.

john   February 7th, 2008 10:58 am ET

I find it interesting that they failed to mention Ron Paul raised $6 million in one day, just a few months ago.

lugina   February 7th, 2008 10:58 am ET

Nice biased reporting, cnn.

Why Bother   February 7th, 2008 10:59 am ET

Ron Paul raised twice as much in the same amount of time. Still, Obama deserves credit. Good luck, Barack.

Whuzi   February 7th, 2008 11:00 am ET

Go Obama Go! I made my donations to a great movement!

Eli   February 7th, 2008 11:01 am ET

Lets see now, the majority of the people voting for Obama normally do not vote and do not follow politics. That is evident from the polls: the largest turnout of young voters and african american voters in AL, GA, and SC and Im sure that will follow true with LA, MD, DC, now does this not tell that they are either voting with their hearts are racial lines not with who will actually be able to run this country. That is what scares me. Im sure someone will comment that they follow politics and vote all the time, if you noticed I said the majority of the voters. Obama has not yet told us how he will do things other than he is the man of change. Yes he is an inspirational speaker but can he actually deliver on his dreams of change. Im just afraid that the media is building him up for the Republicans to shred him to pieces if he gets the nominations. This is a year that a DEMOCRAT win.

Dave, Atlanta, GA   February 7th, 2008 11:01 am ET

It's actually up to 7 million now last time I checked.
As soon as I found out that Hillary had to lend her own campaign money, I made a donation to the Obama campaign.

JC   February 7th, 2008 11:01 am ET

GO OBAMA!

Chris   February 7th, 2008 11:03 am ET

We can clearly see which candidate is the people's choice. Interestingly, all his money is not coming from corporations or lobbyist, it is coming from people like you and me. Good for him. He will gain more support and will be the President.

Obama for Change.

Greg in Columbus   February 7th, 2008 11:04 am ET

That is not true, he raised $6 Million in first 24, now over $7.5 Million since Alaska polls closed. Please correct CNN.

TJ   February 7th, 2008 11:04 am ET

More than double that actually, CNN. He had definitely hit $6 million in 24 hours since the California polls closed, and now he has already hit over $7.5 million.

Do you think they guy with no political influence can raise 3M in 24 hrs?
Do you know why big guys in washington support Obama? They dislike clinton. Because Clintons will not listen to people in washington. They do things what is good for the country and bring prosperity back. Twice we voted for Mr. Nice guy in 2000 & 2004. We now need some one with experience to get things done. Obama, I like you. But I do not want to live in HOPE. I like reality.

Mike

Scott L.   February 7th, 2008 11:27 am ET

The number is now up to $7.6 million. Obama supporters sense victory around the corner, and it's whipping them up into a frenzy!

Emily   February 7th, 2008 11:27 am ET

Indeed, that number is low, according to other media outlets. And I'm glad I could do my (small) part! This is a once-in-a-generation election, and he is a once-in-a-generation mind. The tricks that Hillary is pulling around the country just display that she will just continue the same old political games. We need CHANGE!

Why Media did not mention Sen. Clinton has raising $4 million dollar in 24 hours, but instead favor Obama, IT IS DIRTY WAY AND VERY UNFAIR…..

Sarah   February 7th, 2008 11:31 am ET

YES WE CAN!

This is just GREAT….We are on our way to the America everyone wants. The America that we want for our kids and our kids kids.

Mark, Oklahoma   February 7th, 2008 11:31 am ET

Just as I thought…Obama trying to buy votes…..Listen, Money is not everything…Look what McCain did in the last 6 months and he was broke. Just goes to show that Money can't buy friendships!

Jeff, North Dakota   February 7th, 2008 11:31 am ET

Any Democrat is going to beat McCain. Let's hope the Democrats are wise enough to select Obama.

Jennifer   February 7th, 2008 11:32 am ET

Please fact check this- according to his website he raised over $6 million from the close of the polls on Super Tuesday by midnight eastern time last night.

Obama '08

republican for obama   February 7th, 2008 11:32 am ET

yea CNN really should update this, the number is well over 7 million, it has obviously been longer than 24 hours now, but certainly there was mucxh more money raised than 3 million, which makes it even more significant. The momentum is still rising

Marilyn   February 7th, 2008 11:32 am ET

I don't understand why you report that Obama raised $3,000,000 in the 24 hours after "Super Tuesday", and report that Hillary Clinton loaned her campaign $5,000,000, but neglect to include that she also raised at least $2,000,000 in the same 24 hour period. (This information was reported on American Morning this morning.)

What has happened to CNN as a neutral observer - your preference for Obama is becoming very distressing.

Jason   February 7th, 2008 11:32 am ET

Actually, the total is at $7.5 million right now, with over $6 million coming in on the first 24 hours.

PB in Rhody   February 7th, 2008 11:33 am ET

More importantly the money is coming from over 650,000 individual people–and counting–with not a sleazy corporate contributor among them. We are the ones we've been waiting for!!! GO OBAMA 08

laura b. (D-GA)   February 7th, 2008 11:34 am ET

Typical media anti-Obama spin. They hate him and want Clinton to win, but she won't. GO OBAMA!!!

R.M.   February 7th, 2008 11:34 am ET

Can you see the diverging trend?

-5 Mil on one hand and +3 Mil on another
Tears on one and Hope on another
Diversity on one and Unity on another

How can you not be a part of a movement that has encapsulated the whole nation and taking it by storm? Maybe Obama is not a good manager ( We still have to see it to prove it) but he is one heck of a good leader. You can compensate bad management by hiring qualified people but how can you delegate you leadership qualities to another? Only Obama can do the job America needs. I just want everyone to a part of this moment because as Obama himself said, you will look back at this moment and be proud of yourself and be proud to be an American..

Chris N   February 7th, 2008 11:35 am ET

Power belongs to the people and the people are speaking for Obama and America!

Robin   February 7th, 2008 11:35 am ET

I gave to Obama campaign Wednesday morning after seeing the results and is asking all of my friends and colleague to give ask well…so far many have and will continue until we reach the maximum that’s allowed….Go Obama!!!

Your number is wrong and you're either (1) trying to spin in favor of Clinton, or (2) guilty of sloppy journalism. So you should correct or tell us which one it is. Thanks.

He's got $7,596,326 from when the polls closed on Feb 5th to right now. That's what i call amazing.
Obama 08

Micahel Guinn, Ventura, CA   February 7th, 2008 11:35 am ET

It's now 7.2 million. HRC had to lend her campaign 5 million! That say so much about this election! Yes we Can!

Ca Native   February 7th, 2008 11:35 am ET

If Hillary can't manage her own campaign finances… HOW can she be trusted with our economy??

Remember her Christmas TV ad… all those wrapped gifts she was giving away… it wasn't her money paying for it all. No, she wasn't concerned about costs.. just the wrapping and bows.

Just say NO to Hillary.

TrueIndependent   February 7th, 2008 11:35 am ET

Now Hillary is using the PITY game. Would have been too obvious to 'tear-up' a 3rd time. She wants to be compared with McCain who also ran out of money. She truly likes to take center stage, It always has to be about her!!!!

I DO NOT BELIEVE HER! I think its a strategy - SHE REALLY WANTS THE UNDERDOG LABEL real bad to INVOKE SYMPATHY. This woman is truly MANIPULATIVE. Smart people can see through her.

Plus, who cares if she used her own money? Romney did too, and we don't hear him complaining. Its her fault for underestimating the will of Democrats. She sure thought she would knock Obama out real early. She underestimated the will of the people.

Don't you just love our Democracy!

Steve, NYC, NY   February 7th, 2008 11:35 am ET

Someone wrote this on another blog earlier, please read, its very well thought out.

February 7, 2008 5:11 am ET

In the Media's eyes, Clinton will never do right. Obama will always be a prince. If it were Clinton getting Oprah, and all the celebrities, the press would spin it to be a celebrity campaign. I agree that the Media is being very unfair to not only Clinton but to Huckabee and Ron Paul as well.

I noticed Jack Nicholson endorsed Hillary, but there was no mention of it. I noticed many other establishments, and celebrities have endorsed her yet the only coverage that gets attention is that Maria Schriver added to the Obama team. When you got backers like Oprah and Kennedy's it is not too hard to raise a big sum of money.

Funny how it was only briefly mentioned that Obama DOES in fact take money from the very people he complains about, he just does it once removed so it is not direct. That is sneaky and underhanded and dishonest… and you want him to be president? WOW !!

I think its time the press starts running fair coverage and positive/negative coverage equally. And I think its time that Americans start thinking for themselves, rather than allowing the news media and big names like Oprah influence your decisions.

I think it is offensive to many people like ME who ARE very educated and DO make above average incomes, and say all her supporters are stupid and poor. I would be even MORE offended if I WAS one of the uneducated one and low income. is that NOT who these candidates are trying to better the lives of? And if THEY are the ones voting for her, that tells you something. Maybe SHE IS the candidate to make the changes needed. I hope Edwards endorses her.

Maybe when Obama decides to actually put some substance to his case, rather than just saying I was right about Iraq, he would be more appealing.

Does it NOT concern anyone that he said he needs to win because he will be "right" on day one, (basically saying he, I'm perfect, and am never wrong) but at the last debate said he doesn't want yes men around him because he won't always be right? so he got lucky on ONE topic, if he admits he won't always be right in the end, then how can that be his case for winning? If that had been Clinton saying that, the news would have been all over it!

MEDIA!!! Be FAIR, be equal, and make sure that EVERYONE is accountable in the same way.

Sam   February 7th, 2008 11:35 am ET

Obama will win…

Too bad we were all too politically correct to really tell the people about his true racist affilates ties and how if this were reverse there would be cries all over…

Go Obama, GO!

WAY TO GO FOR DOUBLE STANDARDS..

b.lee   February 7th, 2008 11:36 am ET

Sen. Clinton and her campaing was banking on it all being over after Super Tuesday, Perhaps they were right althought not the results they had expected. What we are witnessing is the country is not just an Obama's event, but a movement started by Congress and George Bush's failed policies.

Lovejoy   February 7th, 2008 11:36 am ET

The race is not over yet but just like the Super Bowl…a close race always favors the under dog. Obama 30 days ago wasn't supposed to last past the first Caucus, but everyday he picks up more steam. He won 13 States out of 22 and not just on Black votes. He won More States than the GOP front runner.

He has the Universal Appeal like a JFK and the longer this goes the more he will overshadow Hillary and Bill. It's amazing!!!! Whether you are a political junkie or have chosen sides you cannot deny his Appeal!!!

Hillary Fan   February 7th, 2008 11:37 am ET

Did Oprah write just one check, or did she divide it up this time?

Shawn   February 7th, 2008 11:37 am ET

Obama baby can you possibly loan some to Hillary. Her poor staff aren't getting paid.

Julie-Albuquerque   February 7th, 2008 11:38 am ET

Is there any reason why Clinton can't use the same fundraising e-mail tactics as Obama? Her current lead over Obama should give her the well-deserved confidence to pursue all avenues of fundraising as her opponent.

Daniel from Kansas   February 7th, 2008 11:38 am ET

Hillary Clinton is running a campaign.

Barack Obama is leading a movement.

"We are the ones we have been looking for"

YES WE CAN!!!

The Obamaniacs are setting themselves up for a big disappointment. Barak is definitely an inspiring guy, and sells a great brand of political soap.

BUT if he actually won the nomination and somehow managed to win the general election he would actually have to govern. Not quite so easy….

His lack of experience would show through pretty fast.

j   February 7th, 2008 11:39 am ET

Now Hillary is a victim????? Quess she might have to get some of Bill's special interest people to help…………….somehow???? Where would you suppose that a former 1st lady and and a one term and a half Senator got $5 Million dollars of her own money ???? It would have to be pretty liquid also????? I smell a skunk someplace !!!!!!

Michelle   February 7th, 2008 11:39 am ET

How this has not raised several eyebrows is astounding! The American people need to question how this is possible with someone who initially came out of no man's land to run for president, then out spends Hillary Clinton!! Come on now–we all know that large sums of money and funds are coming from shell companies affliated with the Middle East! Hopefully an investigation will be launched. That is something Hillary's people should initiate! HA!

ghat b.   February 7th, 2008 11:39 am ET

I agree with a previous commenter- CNN is showing obvious preference towards Obama- so much for unbiased news reporting.

Stephina   February 7th, 2008 11:39 am ET

Clinton raised over $4MM in 2 hours, yet I don't see it making headlines.

What about a headline stating candidates raise millions in 24 hours. But, once again, more biased media coverage for Obama.

Texan4Obama   February 7th, 2008 11:40 am ET

HRC not only underestimated Mr. Obama, she executed ill-advised strategies that simply do not work against a movement. Attempts to marginalize Obama do not work because the man is brilliant, sincere, and a change agent. A president does need the ability to inspire people and give them hope. A president needs to know how to talk people into action!

When Obama speaks, I am inspired, not only to send money to support him, but to be more active in the political process in general. I am 40 years old, and this is the first time I've been inspired at this level.

If we hold on to the old, pessimistic ways of thinking we will never be a better nation. Everyone knows that change doesn't come easy, but those who are inspired know that change comes when you not only demand it, but you get involved in a movement and make it happen. Go Obama! Yes We Can, Yes We Can!

Stephina   February 7th, 2008 11:40 am ET

correction to my earlier post (2 should have been 24)

Clinton raised over $4MM in 24 hours, yet I don't see it making headlines.

Obama raising, Clinton borrowing……hmmmm. They both have raised huge amounts of money up to now….I guess we now know who spends thier money more wisely.

Joy in SC   February 7th, 2008 11:44 am ET

William you asked "Who are his "Large Donors"?

Oprah! Large and in charge!!!

Joey   February 7th, 2008 11:45 am ET

Why doesn't CNN report that Hillary Clinton expects to raise $6 million online in less than 4 days and raised 4 million online from over 35,000 contributors in just two days… Her supporters are not going to let the Obama Circus have the nomination without a fight. Why can't you guys be FAIR AND BALANCED, instead of sensationalizing Obama as the new unstoppable..He hasn't sealed the deal as good as CNN thinks and hopes he has (especially Wolf Blitzer). And instead you report having lent herself $5 million as though its the death of her campaign…

I used to enjoy CNN, but wow, this network really has become the sensational lapdog for the Obama campaign and his irrational, rabid supporters. The country will pay for that.

Finally, how much you wanna bet that your moderators won't post my comment?!

morgan   February 7th, 2008 11:46 am ET

Hillary just wants to do the debates because she is low in funds and it's free airtime for her. Obama wants to spend time with the voters in a more personal setting. After almost 20 debates, I can't imagine they are going to bring anything new to the table.

J Mast   February 7th, 2008 11:47 am ET

Hillary has raised over 4 million in 24 hours. She beat her goal of 3 million in 3 days easily.

Robert   February 7th, 2008 11:47 am ET

RichmondVAgal, How many debates can you have? The reason he is saying no right now to one debate a week is because Hillary is only doing this for free airtime. Her campaign is low on money and so a debate a week is the only way she'll still be seen on the campaign trail without having to exhaust her funds.

There already have been many debates and the views of Hillary and Barack have not changed. If you need a reminder, go back and watch the debate before super tuesday or the one before that.

Larry, Alabama   February 7th, 2008 11:47 am ET

Hillary wants to debate because she is running out of money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She is the one with the special interest groups giving money to her campaign!!! We are from the ground up and we are networking!!!!!!! 80,000 new donors and counting!!!!!!! He doesn't have to beat her, we will!!!!

rob   February 7th, 2008 11:48 am ET

Hillary dug her own grave this time. She had never in her wildest dream thought that OBAMA will give her run for the money and look where the underdog is today.

Erin   February 7th, 2008 11:48 am ET

Many of her staffers are going without pay in February. If she can't manage her campaign budget how will she manage America's budget?

Ann, MO   February 7th, 2008 11:48 am ET

So Hillary "loaned" her campaign $5 million and she has raised $4 million to pay herself back?

Veronica Ward   February 7th, 2008 11:49 am ET

Obama has agreed to one more debate, but says he needs to spend more time with the voters. I think that's great! There has already been 18 debates, why do we need to see more? Clinton just wants free advertising and her supporters should take note of that. I'm tired of all the debates if you ask me. If you want to see more debates, to figure out their policies by now, all you need to do is go to "You Tube" and see all the past debates. A debate every week? That's ridiculous!

Obama is not hiding anything, he would just rather talk to the voters in the upcoming primaries, instead of debating. What's wrong with that?

Dennis   February 7th, 2008 11:49 am ET

For the Clinton supporters screaming about Obama declining to debate Hillary, why should he continue to debate her? They've had numerous debates? A weekly debate isn't needed. Why do you think she proposed a weekly debate? I'll tell you why, it is because her campaign is lacking in funds for the primaries and she wanted the free airtime. For the record, Obama hasn't declined to debate Clinton at all. He has decided not to accpet her proposed schedule. It makes sense. Would you blame Clinton if she didn't want her campaigning schedule dictated to her by her opponent? And if the people deserve to have access to the candidates so much, how do you account for Clinton's abandoning Georgia? How do you account for her focusing on the primaries that are a month away and not focusing more on the primaries that are this week and next week?

Joanna   February 7th, 2008 11:49 am ET

Ok so this is a loan, got it, understand. My question is: just how much of her OWN money is she willing to GIVE the campaign? After all, she is the one seeking office, is she not? You mean she can't invest in her future? She can't invest in this great historical moment? If it were me and I had the money, I'd give especially given the circumstances…

Maybe if Hillary stopped spending so much money on false robo calls, false emails, and false flyers to every independent and democratic voter just days before the primary she would have money left. Hillary has run her campaign in the gutter and is trying to take the American people with her. The Obama supporters are contributing to his campaign as an investment in their future and the future of their children and grandchildren. Don't be fooled ny the Clintons. They are trying to steal the United States from the American people.

Ann, MO   February 7th, 2008 11:50 am ET

The only reason Hillary wants more debates is because her campaign is broke and needs the free air time.

Jen   February 7th, 2008 11:51 am ET

Clinton wants more debates? If she has failed to make it clear where she stands on the issues after 17, or is it 18 of them, and win people over, then so be it.
Obama represents the opportunity for the country to make a fresh start; we have seen the Bush and Clinton dynasties in action, the country deserves better.

california voter   February 7th, 2008 11:51 am ET

i looked at obama's website and by their comments, much of the hysteria for fundraising was fueled by hateful feelings towards hillary. on hillary's site, the fundraisers are all praising her abilities and strengths.

ws   February 7th, 2008 11:51 am ET

If I were Clintons, I don't even bother to run, after all the people so easyly forgot what I have done for them, 7 years ago, the American economy is sound, and America is well respected around the world, people here were getting out of poverty and the job opportunity is growing, all of those you all forgot; and you choose to follow those right wing people, those special interests group, starting hating us so much; ok, you derserve what you wish for, go ahead and vote for another guy who is not qualified, but good at giving out false promises, I will just take care of my own businese, enjoy the life.

empire   February 7th, 2008 11:51 am ET

Hillary Clinton refused to debate her credible primary opponent in 2006 when she was running for re-election to the Senate.

Shame on her for her hypocrisy.

Charles Baugh   February 7th, 2008 11:51 am ET

Gov. Romney supports his campaign with his own money and Senator Clinton, who is also wealthy, loans money to her own campaign and expects to be repaid? Senator Clinton should explain this. It sounds to me, that Hillary isn’t willing to look in her own pockets to fund her presidential aspirations. That would make me believe Senator Clinton thinks like W.C. Fields, who said a sucker is born every minute. Hillary seems to say that she does not have faith in herself and thinks her campaign contributors should pay her way to the “White House”. Can I loan any presidential candidates any money other than Hillary? Senator Obama and his people must be really putting a serious drain on the Clinton’s campaign team’s finance efforts. She'll be "Ready on day one", after she has her contributors repay the FIVE BIG ONES. GO OBAMA!

Never little o   February 7th, 2008 11:51 am ET

Obama still one itty bitty red sates that will stay red…look at the demographics…older white people will vote McCain way before an obama canidate…red states will stay red and blue blue (Guess What? Hillary carried mostly the Blue States….)

Instead of marching like little sheep Obama's people should start to read and understand how the pol process works. i find it interesting that he won mostly the causcuses. Thank god I am from aplcae where there is a primary. Try to get out of work all day and sit in a room with a bunch of ill informed caucus goers…some people have to work…obama is gettign the welthy and the black…hmmh sounds like a consensus to me. NOT

If not Hillary no one!

Jeff B   February 7th, 2008 11:53 am ET

If Clinton performed better on Super Tuesday and was ahead in fund raising, no way in !#&*@ she'd be calling for debates. Always manipulative. She began running for the presidency the day she decided to run for the NY senate.

Slack   February 7th, 2008 11:53 am ET

The debates have been rehashing of the same things over and over again. Hillary just wants a debate for free media time because he's broke and dipping into her own funds. Goodbye, Clinton campaign, and good riddance.

Mark Cary, NC   February 7th, 2008 11:53 am ET

And Senator Clinton raised $4 Million in 24-hours without the help of MoveOn and John Kerry's 3 million person email list. Hmm…I would never count Clinton out. And they always do better when they are behind the 8-ball.

I just wish they would see the benefit of a Clinton/Obama ticket setting us up for 16 years of democrats in the White House.

Bill   February 7th, 2008 11:54 am ET

"Obama has declined an offer to do more one on one debates with Clinton. Hmmm, wonder why…"

I would guess he declined because perhaps it would be best for him to go out and meet with voters. Barrack is still unknown compared to Hillary. To be successful in a campaign, he must go out and meet with voters and let them ask questions and know where he stands.

As for the debate demand (not an offer) by Clinton, it is truly self serving. Clinton is broke and can not compete due to overpaying her staff such as Mark Penn millions. In response, Clinton wants debates to get herself free airtime, attempt to slander Barrack with other ridiculous allegations, and pull Barrack away from the voters. If Clinton can tie up Barrack with debates and keep him away from voters, she might have a chance.

As a voter, I've watched all 18 Democratic Debates. At this point in time, I ask what really is left to discuss. In many of the past debates, Hillary refuses to even answer the questions. She instead laughs and then answers a completely different question. Sorry, Hillary had her chance to make her positions known and blew it.

People give to those they believe in! My wife and I just gave again. We can continue to do this for months. Others we know are getting ready to give more too. None of us would give 1 single dime to Hillary. Not now, not ever because we don't believe in her - and get elected at any cost Bill! So you see, if she gets the nod, she's still out of money. Game over with the GOP!

Obama gives us the best chance to stop a bush backer and end the stupidity of the past 8 years! Hillary won't get a single vote of Obama's because she's what we are fighting against!!

Thats odd no one seemed to care when RON PAUL raised 6 MILLION.

permalik078 iowa   February 7th, 2008 11:56 am ET

The Clinton campaign today announced that it raised more than $4 million online in the day after polls closed on Super Tuesday. It was Hillary’s biggest single day of contributions since the campaign’s launch. In the past 48 hours, more than 35,000 donors have contributed to the campaign, helping Hillary keep pace with the combined fundraising power of Sen. Obama’s campaign, MoveOn, and Sen. Kerry’s 3 million person email list - to which Sen. Obama now has access.

Jeff an Independent   February 7th, 2008 11:56 am ET

Obama, please do not agree to these frequent debates. You have her on the run, she's strapped financially, and now wants to change up the game and con you into a tit for tat like pre-South Carolina.

PLEASE DO NOT! That's old politics and not our best hopes for you.

Do this thing your way. Lead us like you're capable. Presidents don't debate endlessly, they lead.

Larry, Alabama   February 7th, 2008 11:56 am ET

Obama is not the Democratic choice! Or the republican choice! HE IS THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA'S CHOICE!!!!!!!!!!

David   February 7th, 2008 11:56 am ET

To the previous poster. "Wonder why??"

Because he knows as well as she does that a debate per week would not only provide her campaign with free advertising, but it would unfairly broadcast her well-known name to even more potential voters.

Barck Obama had to make a name FOR HIMSELF. She, on the other hand, has acquired her name, experience, and political reputation from marrying slick willie. Obama is a self-made person and is leading a movement for change. Billary is riding the soattails of her husband and trying every old campaign trick in the book to pull out a win.

SHE WILL FAIL BECAUE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WANT CHANGE. SHE REPRESENTS EVERYTHING THAT IS WRONG WITH OUR DEMOCRACY!!

OBAMA will be our next president. Farewell Clinton dynasty! You won't be missed!

Scott   February 7th, 2008 11:56 am ET

If I hear another politician talk about change I think I'm going to puke.<<<

Oh and by the way…when hillary and Obama talk about "change" I think they are referring to what will be left in your bank account after they are done with you.

Yeah wonder why Obama declined to Debate….Hmmmm sounds like he'd rather take jabs at her thru media instead of directly at her…Sounds cowardly to me. OH, and also, read this morning that Hillary raised around 3 million in last 24 hours as well….Kinda wierd that they don't report that. Besides, Hillary does not need money as much at this point to get elected….she's already earned trust of people in the last 10 years!!!! Seems to me Obama is trying anything to get elected, when he verbally said in his post SC speech that he is not one to say things just to get elected like politicians do…..SOUNDS LIKE A POLITICIAN TO ME!! ACT THE PART OBAMA!!! GO HILLARY!

CC, Why don't you also post Clinton also raised $3 million, as reported in other news channels?

You are so biased, it is sickening. You are losing viewers, so I have heard.

Gloria Borger (Sr. analyst???? What a laugh) and Carl Bernstein fumes with hatred of Hillary. People like them who are unprofessional should be banned from TV, since it breeds more hatred from American people who are stupid enough to watch them when they speak. I would turn to another channel whenever the words come out of their mouths. Correctly, their jobs are to express their opinions, but not to that extreme that it becomes personal attacks. You can tell from their facial expression. Disgusting.

Roland Martin is biased, but at least being fair to both candidates on Dem. side some of the time when it calls for.

the only reason the Hillary camp wants several debates is for the free exposure…

Personally, i'm tired of hearing both of them saying the same old thing over and over again. He will say change, she will say experience. He will say Irak, she will say Universal Healthcare, He will say mandate…. blablabla.

People, there hardly is any differences between their policy issues and everyone knows that… She might think she's better than him in debates but his the one who got the big bounce after the last debate….

For those who more debates, just a watch rerun of the first 18 or 19 debates….

Freebies   February 7th, 2008 11:57 am ET

The Clinton campaign's debate proposal is nothing but an attempt to get free air time since their treasury's depleted. Obama's right to say no. We've had enough of them already and the law of diminishing returns comes into play (i.e. the more debates, the smaller the audience). The campaign is neck and neck and it looks more and more like no one will achieve a breakthrough before the convention.

Clinton, sparse funds or not, remains the leader in delegates and organizational strenght. Like her or not, she is one formidable campaigner. She should continue to do well if Bill's can keep his mouth from shooting her in the foot.

I just made my 3rd $50 donation. Go Obama!

Sudhir   February 7th, 2008 11:57 am ET

Hillary running out of money so she wants free advertising through debates. I have had enough debates now… Once a months is enough…. Talk to people directly…

Kyle - Austin, TX   February 7th, 2008 11:58 am ET

The desperation from Clinton is palpable. Skipping the February primaries to focus on Ohio, Texas, and Pennsylvania? Not paying her staffers? Sounds like the Giuliani death-knell. Not to mention her begging for more free air time.

TrueIndependent, I agree! When I first started watching the 2 candidates, I didn't know which way to go. The more I watched, the more I saw right through Hillary. Please America, how can you not see it? She will say and do whatever it takes to get elected! From trying to get sympathy with her tears, to saying she is the underdog and her campaign is like the Giants. Oh, and it's funny how she said her voice was hoarse because she was cheering so loud for the Giants in a MN bar…sorry, but why can't she just be honest and say her voice is soar from all the campaigning? She was starting to lose her voice well before the super bowl…give me a break. And I hope she stops telling everyone she's the underdog, yet she'se the frontrunner on her way to the white house……

Not this time. "We are the ones we've been waiting for!"

Just as I thought…Obama trying to buy votes…..Listen, Money is not everything…Look what McCain did in the last 6 months and he was broke. Just goes to show that Money can't buy friendships!
————————————————————————————————————–

Come on … Billary is no McCain ! She is Mrs. Money. She thought it would be a cakewalk and it was all 'great' when she was millions and millions ahead with her high rollers. She has the 'best' fundraiser in the world running her show. Well, that is what used to be the 'best' - the one who connects the rich.
Truth is that the PEOPLE , when united, are more powerful than the rich and the establishment ! The American People is an awakening giant and the lobbyist and interest groups, the corrupt politicians better get clean and listen to the people or their days are numbered.

However, the Billaries are bleeding and that makes them even so much more vicious … this is no victory for the Obama movement. This means we have to come together even stronger and support the Obama movement !

Together we are MANY ! Yes we can !!!

Each candidate donor list is an open book for anyone to see. It is no secret and that is why Hillary had to disclose her funding of the campaign…it would have made the news anyway and is received better when it comes from Hillary herself.

Obama is battling a machine…I hate guns, but he needs ammo..I donated- why haven't you?

Tara   February 7th, 2008 11:58 am ET

Why won't he debate every week? That question speaks for itself. Hillary is RUNNING OUT OF MONEY. She needs the weekly debates to get her some TV time because she is not going to be able to pay for as much now that she is broke. ANY candidate would say "no" in response to this proposal. It benefits him
