Watch Michelle Obama's comments Wednesday.

(CNN) – Michelle Obama said Wednesday she has always loved America, seeking to quell the firestorm over her comment earlier in the week that seemed to suggest she is only now proud to be an American.

"What I was clearly talking about is that I am proud in how Americans are engaging in the political process," Michelle Obama told CNN affiliate WJAR after a campaign event in Providence, Rhode Island. "I mean everyone has said what I said, in that we haven't seen these record numbers of turnouts, people who are paying attention, going to rallies, watching debates.

“For the first time in my lifetime I am seeing people rolling up their sleeves in way that I haven't seen and really trying to figure this out, and that's the source of pride I was talking about," she continued.

On Monday, Michelle Obama told the crowd at a campaign event that "for the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country, because it feels like hope is making a comeback… not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change."

That comment immediately drew fire from several conservative talk radio-hosts. John McCain's wife, Cindy McCain, seemed to be responding to the remark when she introduced her husband at a campaign rally Tuesday by saying, "I am proud of my country. I don’t know about you, if you heard those words earlier — I am very proud of my country.”

On Wednesday, Michelle Obama said: "I love my country, and wouldn't be in this if I didn't care deeply and didn't believe that the kind of possibilities I had as a kid should be available to every single child."

Last time I looked Michelle wasn't running for president so what does it really matter what she might have said. I'm more concerned with Obama's comments and the lack of any substance to them.

Lynn in St. Louis   February 20th, 2008 5:25 pm ET

If this was someone who supported Hillary Clinton saying this, they would have been nailed on the spot. However, just like they have done so far this primary season, the media is giving slack to the Barack Obama side. What else is new?

Wayne, Greenville TX   February 20th, 2008 5:25 pm ET

Since the political right is out of ideas, they're grasping at straws, making a mountain out of this molehill of a story. They're even airing a poorly edited sound bite of Michelle's comments on many right-wing talk shows, where the word "really" is replaced with silence the way swear words are deleted from movies shown on television.

They know they're gonna lose and lose big this fall, and they're getting desperate.

Ayyub, Richmond, Va   February 20th, 2008 5:26 pm ET

Thank you, You can love your country and at the same time not be proud of it. People, give her a break, there's never been a time you were not proud of your country because of the divisions and obsticles and wars. GIVE ME A BREAK OF YOU SAY "NO"!

erica   February 20th, 2008 5:26 pm ET

I would think that someone who went to Princeton and Harvard law would be taught the importance of using words carefully.

No, not everyone has said what she said and not everyone would.

NOT ~ GOOD ~ ENOUGH.

bo   February 20th, 2008 5:28 pm ET

wow…you're "proud" of america because people want change? how lame is that.

Nancy -Long Beach, CA   February 20th, 2008 5:28 pm ET

The Obama campaign had better get faster on the draw when it comes to attacks and counter-attacks, especially from the Republican attack machine when Obama wins the nomination. I am an Obama supporter but see a big flaw in their strategy when it comes to addressing attacks. They seem to think the issues will just go away if they don't respond. Michelle should have been publicly clarifying her statement within minutes of it caming out. Just like the sneaky attacks that Obama is a Muslim, which he is not. They are going to really feel the pressure if they don't learn to push back hard and fast.

Denise   February 20th, 2008 5:28 pm ET

I can't believe such a mountain has been made out of a molehill. This is a NON-ISSUE! Let's move on to something more important, please.

MN   February 20th, 2008 5:29 pm ET

Again, the opposition is fishing to bring out the negative not matter how petty it may be….. no surprise- it happens in politics. All I can say is the votes speak for themselves and the people are saying in large numbers "YES WE CAN!!"

Kat, Huntington, West Virginia   February 20th, 2008 5:29 pm ET

get ready Obamas-this is only the beginning!!! Wonder how you'll hold up to the full force of the republican machine? Personally if Barack gets the nomination I'll cast a ballot for Cynthia McKinney of the Green Party. I could never vote for a republican and clearly Obama is not the person for this job-so the Green party it is. Please people, get out and vote for a person who has the substance to win this-Hillary!

Ash   February 20th, 2008 5:29 pm ET

Well, the spolight is now on Michelle, and she has to be careful going forward. The clarification could not have come soon enough - and there are tons of political foes ready to twist and attack every word and action from the Obama camp, no matter how trivial or out of context it may seem. If taken literally, that would have been an insulting statement to most people.

Ardnuas   February 20th, 2008 5:29 pm ET

JDM   February 20th, 2008 5:29 pm ET

Finally, an answer for the attacker. I understood what she said from the begininng, but this is job interview for the white house, and everything you say will be use too keep you from getting it. Keep Hope alive!! I remember that from some where.

Sandra L   February 20th, 2008 5:29 pm ET

i THINK THAT POEPLE AT THIS POINT WERE THINKING THAT THEY COULD EXPLODE ANY LITTLE COMMENT AND MAKE IT A BIG DEAL.

Michelle Obam is a great woman and will make a really great first lady.

We knew what you ment.. but people who would rather see hillary in the white house decided that maybe this would reduce the obama votes.. haha i almost fell out of my chair when i saw how angry Lou Dobbs was… i love seeing that guy mad.. it makes him even more of a loser.. ha ha
no offence CNN you guys are great but that guy.. man..

I'm down with Obama and all but why does Michelle always look like she's two seconds away from putting the smack down on somebody?

WendellPerrySociety   February 20th, 2008 5:30 pm ET

The women obviously meant she was exceedingly proud right now - not that she has never been proud. It is obvious that she and Barack are civic minded individuals - they both could be at white shoe law firms right now.

di   February 20th, 2008 5:30 pm ET

michelle do not mind the bad mouths i know you have always loved america.

barbie   February 20th, 2008 5:30 pm ET

Now she has always loved America, her remark that for the first time in her adult life she is proud of America. That is what she meant to say, the only reason she is trying to explain is because people are questioning her comment. After her original comment she certainly should not be first lady.

Laughing   February 20th, 2008 5:30 pm ET

It wasn't a real Problem. It was just a couple of Canidates trying to stop Obama.

These arguments about "I have always love the country" doesnt mean that your the right choice. America has done things that should ashame Americans. If a person says "I am ashamed of the U.S. dealings with Iraq Prisons" be considered Anti-Aerican or showing true colors. If one was a true Patriot they would STOP USEING FEAR to scare americans to vote for them. I'm not proud of Americans that where for the War with Iraq, that includes me.

Every canidate has a problem with America that they want to change, that doesnt make them "Bad."

Nobama No way   February 20th, 2008 5:31 pm ET

Leave it to the Obummers to wait 24 hours, have their PROFESSIONAL SPEECH WRITERS write a response with a spin to make it sound totally different than what she actually said!

THEY'RE BOTH FULL OF HOT AIR! NO SUBSTANCE!!

VOTE FOR SOLUTIONS!!!

VOTE FOR HILLARY CLINTON!!

Liz Wetzel   February 20th, 2008 5:31 pm ET

Yeeeyyy!!! Both wanna-be-first-ladies profess love for their country. Now how can we spin this event so we can use this against Hillary, to make Hillary look despicable again and again.

NORCALMOM   February 20th, 2008 5:31 pm ET

I am not a conservavtive, I am a loyal Democrat until someone is nominated based on words and false hope and not actions.. Maybe if the voters are voting based on his speeches and what meaning they have we should all look again especially if Mrs Obama has never been proud to be an American in her Adulthood. Good try Mrs. O but I am not buying it!

Craig   February 20th, 2008 5:32 pm ET

She says:
"For the first time in my lifetime I am seeing people rolling up their sleeves in way that I haven't seen and really trying to figure this out, and that's the source of pride I was talking about,"

Oh really.

So in your lifetime people HAVEN'T rolled up their sleeves and tried to figure this out?

Great way to trash the Democratic party, because last time I checked, in your lifetime, we have held the Presidency about half the time, and the Congress more than half the time.

But people are only now trying because of "Rock-Star Obama?" Wow, so you attribute it all to the hubby?

So, are you NOT proud of the Democratic party over the last 40 years?

Or are you just proud and pleased as punch because people are falling for someone with virtually no experience, limited knowledge and a decent vocabulary?

Can't have it both ways - you meant EXACTLY what you said. Nice try to "clarify" but no one is buying it except those who's eyes are glazed over by "Rock Star-Obama".

josh lamar   February 20th, 2008 5:32 pm ET

Thank you Michelle! So much over the psat day I've seen her being ridiculed on what she said even though what she truly said wasn't really that bad! She should have worded it differently, sure…. But obviously if her husband is running for president, they love this country and for the first time in a long tme I'M proud that our young people are stepping up and voting for CHANGE in the white house…

President Bush, Feb 12, The White House Black History Month Observance:
"The era of rampant lynching is a shameful chapter in American history. The noose is not a symbol of prairie justice, but of gross injustice. Displaying one is not a harmless prank, and lynching is not a word to be mentioned in jest."

Bill O'Reilly of FOX News, Feb 19:
"I don't want to go on a lynching party against Michelle Obama unless there's evidence, hard facts, that say this is how the woman really feels. If that's how she really feels — that America is a bad country or a flawed nation, whatever — then that's legit. We'll track it down."

suzy   February 20th, 2008 5:32 pm ET

I thought you didn't have any dreams or notions of possibilities as a kid - At least you didn't seem to ever wish for a woman to be president, according to you.
So, you're only proud that it's now your husband is running for office?
Now that an African American is running for office?

Janice   February 20th, 2008 5:32 pm ET

Come on, as every mother knows, you love your child, but you are not always proud of their behavior. That's how I feel about America, I love this country, but under George W. we have been behaving really really badly.

Smart Democrat   February 20th, 2008 5:32 pm ET

Is she First Lady material??? Yeah, that is what I thought….

How come when Hillary or Bill clarify a statement they are "triangulating", but this nut bag can utter any nonsense she wants with no consequences?? I guess this is the type of change we have to look forward to……SAD

Bob   February 20th, 2008 5:33 pm ET

Why can't we just be honest? Oh riiiiiight because our husband is running for office, and anything other than "America is #1, Always Has Been, and Always Will Be" will destroy his electability.

Since I have nothing to lose, I'm just going to go ahead and throw this out there: having been born in the Reagan years, I have never been particularly proud of my country. I think it's probably better than a lot of other countries, but the fact that it stays there by holding those countries down doesn't exactly fill me with patriotism.

Mr.B.   February 20th, 2008 5:33 pm ET

Thank you Michelle. I was listening when you spoke, and I completly understood what you were saying.

I'm glad that you decided to speak up and not let the negative peolple of this country stand in your way.

proud about, let alone inspired, since JFK.
Michelle is the perfect new first lady.

Brian   February 20th, 2008 5:34 pm ET

Nice to see. Thanks Michelle, now we can put this behind us!

Native Winyan   February 20th, 2008 5:35 pm ET

I agree with Michelle 100% as I have said the very same thing myself. I have been inspired. I have seen my brother who is a a Vietnam Veteran, inspired on the day Barack announced his intention of running for President. My brother who believed the Country didnt care about our Veterans was hopeful that day. He felt it, just like thousands of others have felt it. The media, the naysayers and the Clintons are trying to say Obama's supporters are just following a man with a good speech. What we are following is A DREAM THAT AMERICA REALLY IS FOR EVERYBODY! That we are all created equal and no matter what the color of our skin is or how much money we make or under what circumstances we grow up under WE HAVE A CHANCE! That our children or grandchildren will have a chance at the great american dream. Even though our land was stolen and our way of life destroyed Today I can honestly say that I am proud to be American and I thank Barack Obama and all of the supporters for believing that..YES WE CAN!!!

Deb   February 20th, 2008 5:35 pm ET

Liar! Liar! Pants on Fire!

Are you the one who taught your husband to never admit mistakes and apologize?

You totally lack the GRACE we expect from a First Lady!

You aren't even a Lady!

Jim   February 20th, 2008 5:35 pm ET

whatever….what you said was stupid and it's going to be used to no end by republicans. Nice try on the spin though.

Paul Naranjo   February 20th, 2008 5:35 pm ET

Hillary, you will make a great President, you are proud of our nation!
It is time for change, but we cannot entrust our nation in the hands of an unexperienced individual who can deliver eloquent speeches. Do we still believe in fairytales? If that was the case, then, we 'd better stay as we are with the Republicans who at least will have an experienced candidate running for president.
If you are a real Democrat, then vote for change and make history with Hillary, do not vote because you like or dislike someone, but instead, think twice and decide who has the most experience to be commander and chief on day one.
Aren’t most voters females and elderly, aren’t we as Latinos thankful with the Clintons for their care and support of us all.
Then let us make a real difference by voting for the person who will truly improve both our economy and our lives because she cares. Only then, we will make a difference in the world, while we make history
Hillary 08!

I'm not a fan of hers but the criticism is a little unfounded. I'm more concerned about Barack's momentum since he is not ready to be president. Moreover Clinton has the blueprint for change and the skill to make it happen; Obama just has vague promises.

Lala   February 20th, 2008 5:36 pm ET

Divine Destiny   February 20th, 2008 5:36 pm ET

I think everyone is blowing the comment out of proportion. She never said that she hated America. She said she is finally "proud" of America, alluding to the democratic system. After all, as an African American, who better to be disoriented with America–remember slavery when we were treated (not like dogs; they are still treated better than humans-but that's another story) worse then anyone, any animal or anything on earth. With that said, I am proud to be an American who happens to be Black. I have always loved my country and I believe Obama's wife has, too. If that's all that McCain and others can come up with, it shows me that they are really concerned with Obama's potential as a successful candidate and ultimately President of the United States.

Thai from Louisiana   February 20th, 2008 5:36 pm ET

I can totally understand where she is coming from. This polical process is so amazing and the fact that people are coming out in record numbers to vote is just mind blowing. The election was all but handed to Hilary but now she is fighting to stay in it. People want change and I truely believe that we will receive that change.

Ron, TX   February 20th, 2008 5:36 pm ET

The whole "You aren't patriotic!" schmear from the right is tired and old. I don't think any single one of our politicians would be where they are today if they truly did not love America, were proud of America, and wanted to make America a better place.

DONALD FAHRENKRUG   February 20th, 2008 5:36 pm ET

You said what you said and it shows your true colors. You are a spoiled elitist brat. You being the so-called first lady would be a joke.

You and your husband are ultra-liberal, radical nuts and I can't believe the American people are such morons that they are seriously considering electing the Senator as president. God help us all.

Bruce   February 20th, 2008 5:36 pm ET

Most people stumble occasionally when they speak. Big deal. We all know what she was trying to say. Don't misunderstimate her. As Ron Reagan once said, "Facts are stupid things". To focus on this type of thing is a distraction. Are we going to plot the course of our nation, or get hung up on silly sidebars?

SecularAnimist   February 20th, 2008 5:36 pm ET

Frankly, I am not particularly proud of a country that allowed Dick Cheney and George W. Bush to blatantly steal two presidential elections in a row and to launch a war of unprovoked aggression based on sickening lies, while looting the US Treasury and the US economy for the enrichment of their already ultra-rich cronies and financial backers. Nor am I proud of this country's corporate-owned media, such as CNN, who aided and abetted this heinous corruption and criminality.

TC Powers   February 20th, 2008 5:37 pm ET

OurTimeIsNow!   February 20th, 2008 5:37 pm ET

Hey,

"If we fall for this…we will fall for anything." What else are they going to find wrong with his campaign? Barack used his friends words. Michelle stated an opinion about how she feels about the country's involvement in this political race. Barack stole his friends crayons in Kindergarten.

Come on Hillary and McCain. If that's all you've got…you may as well start waving the white flag.

Hillary and McCain both stated that change is more than just words. However, have you noticed that Obama's words has inspired an entire country to stand for real change. Not only in our country….but within ourselves. Think about it!

Ocala Florida Star Banner printed a quote from Michelle Obama. "I hate Hillary. If Hillary wins than I am going to vote for John McCain".
Check this out. Is this want America wants for a First lady? No thanks.

Thank you.

Bayou Joe   February 20th, 2008 5:37 pm ET

WE know you love America, Mrs Obama. The real question is: Does your husband understand what is at stake in the world and what is he going to do about it? I hope he does win the nomination over Hillary. Just so we can expose him for the fraud that he is.

Jason Mitchell   February 20th, 2008 5:37 pm ET

I love how people take things out of context. Questioning how much someone loves this country when their husband is running for President is absolutely absurd. I hope that people are smarter than Mrs. McCain apparently is. I'm a conservative, but I'm voting for Obama because I'm tired of the Republican's inability to get anything done. It's time for Obama.

Ronald, American living abroad   February 20th, 2008 5:37 pm ET

Michelle Obama is going to make a wonderful first lady. This cheap attempt to take her comments out of context is a desperate attempt by the status quo to keep change at bay. Obama's time has come and over 1,000,000 donations is proof that he is not alone. WE are the change we have been waiting for. For that, I join with Michelle Obama in a renewal of pride in the greatest country on earth!

Oh, and which of John McCain's wives will be the first lady?

Arlene Vance   February 20th, 2008 5:37 pm ET

Michelle Obama was right to declare "for the first time in my adult life, I'm proud of my country." For the 1st time in a long time, I'm proud of my country too. Proud that they are looking beyond race and color to choose a President; Proud that they are NOT listening to the crap in the news media about who we "should" elect; Proud that for the 1st time since John Kennedy Americans are finding their own brains and making their own choices. Maybe there's hope for this country yet!!! Maybe Obama is right in telling us to keep hope alive!! Maybe, if we STOP listening to the garbage on the news we will finally get it right and elect someone for President who will actually care about AMERICANS and AMERICAN JOBS AND AMERICAN NEEDS.!! You Americans dont vote on issues you only vote on what will make you look good on the world stage. it will be nice to say look at us we voted a black man to the office of President even though in my opinion Mrs Clinton it truly the better candidate for this job. Look good on you and you will get what you deserve

Please give this a rest   February 20th, 2008 5:38 pm ET

People who are making a big deal about Michelle's previous statement need to get a life. It was pretty clear that she was referring to her pride in her country's ability to unite and participate in politics in a positive way–the unprecedented record turnout we haven't seen in decades.

I truly believe what she was trying to say just came out wrong
Good luck Michelle

JERIES   February 20th, 2008 5:39 pm ET

If you are not going to allow me to say what I want to say, I guess there is no need to comment.
Thanks you.

Vig   February 20th, 2008 5:40 pm ET

Let's get to the heart of this. Mrs. Obama is speaking as an Afro-American woman and even though she is highly educated, she seems to be saying her experience as a Black woman in this country or what Blacks have had to put up with, does not make her proud. Now that her husband is a hot item, I guess she feels her claims to lack of entitlement of a piece of the American pie have been satisfied. Blacks have entitlement issues - and it is understandable why. That's why Obama hit the jackpot among Black voters - they are finally entitled to a Black President. Hey - aren't we also entitled to a woman President?

Anna Sacramento, Ca   February 20th, 2008 5:40 pm ET

And it gets worse. Of the remaining states left to vote, Texas and Wisconsin will hold open primaries, which portends of a large crossover vote to put Obama over the top. (Texas was gerrymandered under Tom Delay to favor a Republican lock on most districts.) The state party in Texas also allots a third of its delegates by way of a caucus. Thus, even Clinton's superdelegate failsafe may prove insufficient in overcoming the shrewdly stacked deck against her. Thanks to Karl Rove and his friends in the shadows, the Democratic nominee may ultimately be determined not by Democrats but by the G.O.P., with the help of its unwitting accomplices at the DNC.

Chauncey Toler   February 20th, 2008 5:40 pm ET

I think that this is being blown out of poportion. As a 18 year old I am not so proud of the dicisions the US has made myself. I live around the Washington D.C area and we as Americans have the right to speak what we feel. She told the truth and for that I give her respect. This is another way for reporters, and the McCain campaign to take desperate shots at Obama. But I do think that the wifes of the canditates need to let their husbands stand their own ground. Their running not them.

Choked on my lunch   February 20th, 2008 5:40 pm ET

To anyone with half a brain, it's obvious this was what she meant. Sad that she had to come out and explain herself, but with cheap, do-anything-to-win politicians like Hillary and McCain, I'm not suprised.

Brenda Hutchison   February 20th, 2008 5:41 pm ET

When I initially heard Michelle's comment, my gut lurched; I, however,
immediately understood she meant pride in the fact that people from every section of USA are voting–colorblind. Yeah!!! …

Shannon   February 20th, 2008 5:41 pm ET

Mrs Obama insults America one day, but loves her country the next. Which is it,. Anytime you have to clarify what you said, and give an additional speech to try to cover up what you said the first time, you have a problem. The Obama team is shallow, and they seem to be more interested in what America can do for them, rather than what they can do for America.

Saundra Goodman   February 20th, 2008 5:44 pm ET

First off, I served 4 years in the United States Marine Corps (4 active and 2 reserve). Michelle Obama did not say anything that I'll bet about a million other Americans haven't been thinking and expressing. She got caught up in the momentous thing that has happened in this country. For the first time white Americans are looking past race and ethnicity and voting for the person whom they believe will bring on the kind of change they want. And that is something to be really proud of! For the first time in my adult life I am really proud of this country too, because it seems it is "living out the meaning of its creed, that all men are created equal…" Cry tears of joy I say. After all for decades black people in this country fought to vote for the candidate they thought would best serve their interests even though none of us thought we would ever see the day that a black person would be allowed (no matter how educated) to be a viable candidate for the presidency without the shackles of people's attitudes about race to hold down his/her ankles.

GOD [of the] MIDDLE EARTH   February 20th, 2008 5:44 pm ET

I hope people understand that Michelle Obama is just as much a fighter as Barrak is.

If Cindy "Stepfford Wife" McCain thinks she can take on this Ivy League educated lioness Michelle Obama, she is making a mistake of a lifetime.

As far as "media" trying to swiftboat Michelle, OK whatever.

The ring of Power has been lost again, please don't let Hillary find it.

Ralph   February 20th, 2008 5:46 pm ET

It was clear it was taken out of context from the start but thanks for the clarification.

Roger Miller   February 20th, 2008 5:49 pm ET

Every thief has an explanation once gets caught … the explanation does not make sense … considering the original comments …

Doc Jerome   February 20th, 2008 5:51 pm ET

Enough. Next distortion please.

Mashawnda, North Carolina   February 20th, 2008 5:53 pm ET

We love you too…Michelle…People have to talk about something about you guys…you guys have out done what was expected…expect everything you do…or say…to be under a microscope…and your weapon…

Defeat them all…

Defeat them all…

Christian   February 20th, 2008 5:53 pm ET

For all of you planning to 'expose' Obama, and claiming that Clinton is clearly the better candidate, I have only this to say, can you really make the call on who the better candidate is when half the US didn't know Obama was alive even just one year ago?

deanne   February 20th, 2008 5:53 pm ET

Oh, please. She knows what she said and she said what she meant. It was measured and controlled not flippant nor impulsive. Plus, she is supposedly an Ivy League college grad. Pulleeeze. She knows how to speak properly. Yeah, let's put her in as First Lady. Good for her, she is FINALLY PROUD of her country. How completely UNAMERICAN. The divide you don't see now will E X P A N D if he is elected. Get with it, before it's too late.

Subhash Durlabhji   February 20th, 2008 5:54 pm ET

Much ado about nothing. Perhaps we SHOULD all be less jingoistic and more humble. Being patriotic does not mean, at least to me, my country right or wrong. Democracy requires citizens to stand up and speak out when their country is doing something they should be ashamed about. Abu Gharib, Guantanamo, torture — sure I am proud to be an American AND proud to be in a country where I can openly and publicly express my shame at my country's actions. The litany of "We are the greatest nation on earth" is not pride, it is hubris. The world sees us not as proud Americans but as arrogant Americans. Blind pride causes us not to admit our mistakes.

Dave   February 20th, 2008 5:55 pm ET

It disturbs me that not many people seem upset by her lack of pride for this country. Isn't she proud of the service of the men and wimen in our armed forces? I have lost all respect for her. This country has provided her with so many oppurtunities, and to say what she said… sickening.

great neck ed   February 20th, 2008 5:57 pm ET

Notice how illiterate the Obama bloggers are. One said he or she hopes Clinton will loose. And that's just one example.

anonymous   February 20th, 2008 5:58 pm ET

Michelle Obama was saying that she was now proud of her country because people of all races were voting for a biracial man. Race is always the trump card with American blacks. Hillary is the better qualified candidate. I am a registered democrat and hate the republicans. However, if Obama is the democratic nominee, I will vote for John McCain.

Brandon   February 20th, 2008 5:59 pm ET

Of course, leave it to the conservative talk-radio base to spin something so simple, and leave it to the brainless sheep who listen to them to cry "See! Now you see! Obama's a muslim terrorist! Next it will be the race card! OMG!!!!!111″

It really highlights how badly the Republicans are scared of Obama. They know that if Obama's the candidate, McCain has a battle ahead of him which is so uphill that it's practically vertical.

Randy G   February 20th, 2008 5:59 pm ET

Nice Try. Your meaning WAS understood! I believe you went through this before when your Husband ran for the U.S. Senate and State Senate! I found what you said to be Offensive!

OurTimeIsNow!   February 20th, 2008 6:01 pm ET

Jason Miller

Why is it that we have to fight dirty. This is the main reason why our country is the way it is. Barack will beat Hillary and McCain fair and square. He will not have to stoop to their level to do it.

Hillary keeps saying, "Barack wouldn't be able to handle McCain." Let's not forget that Barack is a black male born to a single Mom and has defeated all odds…and is now the frontrunner for the Democratic Nominee. "So, keep throwing your rocks…eventually Barack will build a Nation."

Obama 08′

Patrick Belvin, Lake Stevens, WA   February 20th, 2008 6:02 pm ET

I think Michelle Obama's comments on Monday are a non-issue. Barack's opponents, Sen. Clinton and now Cindy McCain have jumped all over Michelle's somewhat poorly chosen words in an attempt to sway voters away from Barack's campaign. But people who really believe in what Sen. Obama has to offer America will not be deterred by these adolescent ploys to stop his surge towards the White House.

Dave   February 20th, 2008 6:02 pm ET

Why is it alright for Michelle Obama to make a statement like that?
What if Bill Clinton had made the same statement? Would you still feel it was taken out of context?

Dave   February 20th, 2008 6:02 pm ET

Her qoutes only explain why she is proud, not weather she has been proud of our country before

Jack   February 20th, 2008 6:03 pm ET

Guess Mrs. Obama is not as good with the slick rhetoric as her husband is

Aida   February 20th, 2008 6:03 pm ET

CNN continues to print derogatory comments aimed at Hillary, but stops those that speak the truth of their golden child. You are a sad, sad reminder of how the media manipulates the educated into selecting the candidate you choose.

The truth will come out about Barack and Michelle - whether CNN likes it or not.

Bill, St. Paul, MN   February 20th, 2008 6:04 pm ET

Michelle is awesome, that she has to explain to a bunch of "patriots" is a joke. Keep on keeping on, Michelle, we love you up here in MN and understand exactly what you are saying.

EBK   February 20th, 2008 6:07 pm ET

OH by the way, if I were Cindy, I wouldn't be making comments. Didn't she get in trouble for stealing!!

Mendoza, Lisa   February 20th, 2008 6:12 pm ET

if you are not PROUD to be in this country then why don't you just get up move to Iran or some other country where you can find peace in your heart!

Sal in Phoenix   February 20th, 2008 6:21 pm ET

To elizabeth, george washington the successful general that won the war and independence from the brits, as well as being successful in his personal life..I'd say that he had alot of experience, especially for that period of time.

sam   February 20th, 2008 6:21 pm ET

He is full of promises, and day dreaming, we need someone who has experience and not one who is still wearing politcal diaper.

bo   February 20th, 2008 6:21 pm ET

ha ha ha!!! how funny suddenly all the obama-ers are ready to be cool-minded and see something as blown out of proportion all the while if this had been bill clinton or anyone alse from hillary's camp, they would have been all over it. now they're crying "she's just the spouse, not the candidate" all the while going on and on about bill and chelsea.

once again, the obama's can do no wrong. give me a break - it wasn't a word-slip, it wasn't taken out of context, she's a very eductaed person and she knew EXACTLY what she was saying. the obama's are nothing more than the anti-candidate. far from being FOR something, obama is just AGAINST everything. and you're voting for him for that?

Viola P. Austin   February 20th, 2008 6:21 pm ET

Obama keep yours eyes continually focus on God and what he gives you and your wife to say. Do not worry about the comments that the opponets are saying. Pray and let God have there comments and he will work every situation out for you. Just remember to always pray without ceasing. I like the way God works through you, to handle the comments. Just continue to let God speak and use you and your wife. I am praying for you and your family. God will give you favor.

Steve   February 20th, 2008 6:21 pm ET

LOL. The repugs and Clintons trying to make something out of this is like throwing a rock at a tank.

Mike in Texas   February 20th, 2008 6:22 pm ET

I think it is unfortunate that Mrs. McCain is calling out the opponents wife. I can say that after the last 2 elections and all of the turmoil our country has gone through the past 8 years including an attack on US soil, I am energized and excited about the potential for new ideas and new leadership by the candidates involved. The spouses should stick to the sidelines.

MidWest   February 20th, 2008 6:22 pm ET

come on… you guys are telling me you couldn't find a better photo of Michele Obama? Why make her look angry and defensive? Whatever happened to objective reporting?

Ed   February 20th, 2008 6:22 pm ET

Much ado about nothing.

Me2   February 20th, 2008 6:24 pm ET

When she becomes First Lady, she can say whatever she wants. Entitlement for all!!!

JR, Texas   February 20th, 2008 6:24 pm ET

It is interesting to me that the Democrats are so short-sighted. Hillary is the present of the party. Obama is the future. They could be in the White House for the next sixteen years if they played their cards right. Obama is not ready. McCain will eat him up and spit him out. McCain will play dirty as the Republicans do and Obama will lose. Then where will the Democrats be……at least Hillary will be able to say "I told you so".

HB   February 20th, 2008 6:24 pm ET

What? What on earth is she trying to say now?

Tim T.   February 20th, 2008 6:24 pm ET

Rush abuses prescription drugs illegally and gets no heat. Mrs. Obama says something, and they're all over her like attacking pit bulls. Go figure.

Steve   February 20th, 2008 6:25 pm ET

She's a two-faced, forked-tongue, BS-er. Funny; sounds just like her husband….

Justin   February 20th, 2008 6:25 pm ET

American have to be blindly pround to be a citizen?! I love the country does NOT mean that I have to be pround of. When it has problems, I would not be pround of it, sometime I have to be shamed with what it did. But I will fix it so that I will be pround of it because I love it so much. Wake up! Most of american are such idios who don't even what they are pround of!

Sandy   February 20th, 2008 6:26 pm ET

All lies, just like her husband.

Disbeliever   February 20th, 2008 6:26 pm ET

Brian Tampa, FL   February 20th, 2008 6:28 pm ET

Words count, both good and bad. She is an intelligent women and seemed to know exactly what she was saying. It was not just "conservative talk show hosts" who found the comment disturbing and it did require clarification.

akaDoug   February 20th, 2008 6:29 pm ET

I'm gonna vote for Hillary because of this…no wait her husband is an arrogant SOB! I'll vote for McCain because of this…no wait his wife is nothing more than a high maintenance, trophy wife!

After all the number 1 requirement for the president is having a likeable spouse…guess I won't be voting at all this year!

Get really people…Obama in 2008!

shawn smith   February 20th, 2008 6:29 pm ET

Do we have to be proud of Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo, torture, secret CIA prisons, renunciation of the Geneva accords, the Iraq war, and the biggest percentage of people without healthcare in the industrialized world to be a patriot? Sorry. I guess I'm not a republican.

Ben, MA   February 20th, 2008 6:30 pm ET

If this is all that the anti-Obama people can come up with… he is in good shape.

enomisa   February 20th, 2008 6:31 pm ET

What a sham and folly.

Who cares what she said/ meant/ really meant.

What I mean to say is this: My party- the democratic party- has been co-opted by independents and republicans.

THEIR vote in our OPEN primaries sabotaged the vote of the registered members of the party. Why do they get a say in who OUR nominee is?

In some cases, their vote got counted while the votes of the registered party members goes disregarded and uncounted?

When this democracy degrade into 3rd world election stealing and rigging?

The democratic party has truly dug its grave this year.
Many of these people that jumped on the Obama bandwagon will jump off just as fast, or return to their true party (republican) now that they have succeeded in knocking Hillary out of the race.

Now do you see the game that they played and the card up the sleeve?

brad   February 20th, 2008 6:31 pm ET

Let it go people. Everybody is reading her words in their own voice and manipulating it in their own way for good or bad. Yes, it is Barack Obama's words that are more important. However, I would be very proud to have Mrs. Obama represent the US as First Lady should she be so interested. I was in no way offended by her remark in any content.. How can you not be proud of the showing in this primary. It's incredible. For all sides.

HOLA   February 20th, 2008 6:33 pm ET

Ronald, i'm another proud American living abroad and i agree with your comment 100%.

Friends of mine, who are not American citizens, are watching this election closely & all are in favor of Senator Obama.

Gloria E. Mills   February 20th, 2008 6:36 pm ET

Well,

I understand what she is saying, but, I know quite a few people, once they receive their "blessings" forget about the rest of the world as they relish in their successful roles. So many of the republicans hate Hillary so much that they didn't think that Obama was a threat. I heard, myself on Sean Hannity show that Republican should go to the primaries, vote for Obama, because they want anyone but, Clinton.

I don't believe that they cannot understand that we do not want more war! We are tired of war, and more war and talk of war and spending more and more of our tax money.

siben   February 20th, 2008 6:39 pm ET

She spoke clearly and you found it difficult to understand. Are you folks sure to understand if she speaks Harvard or Princeton language?

S. Holt   February 20th, 2008 6:39 pm ET

You mean Cindy McCain has a thought and can do more than stand there next to her man like a Barbie Doll? Why is she always standing there for every speech? In the limelight. I understood what Mrs. Obama meant, people are getting involved in the whole process.

krissy   February 20th, 2008 6:49 pm ET

It was pretty obvious that is what she meant. The only people making a big deal out of this, are the same ones who lead our country to ruin the past 8 years. Enough nasty politics! Stick to the issues!

OBAMA 08!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Douly   February 20th, 2008 6:50 pm ET

Glad Mrs Obama cleared that up!

Now that Cindy "pain killer addict" Mccain decided to Mumble… she can be exposed for what she is …. house mom/ homewrecker/ pain killer addict

this is going to get interesting…..

cicero   February 20th, 2008 6:51 pm ET

Her explanation still betrays a kind of historical arrogance. What she is saying is that her husband's campaign is the first time she has ever seen involved citizens. Give us a break. She has not been paying attention. She is seeing things from within the fervor of a campaign, and that has made her think she is seeing something that has never taken place before. Get some perspective, please.

Hey Bill, please reserve AWESOME for God.

Jim in FL   February 20th, 2008 6:51 pm ET

The original statement was awkward. Easily the product of a mis-speak, excitement, or just plain fatigue. She needed to clarify. She did. This girl could be a better First Lady than Hillary ever was. Her hubby could easily dwarf Bill as well. Neither instance is saying much.

Matthew   February 20th, 2008 6:51 pm ET

You can't draw a character evaluation off of one sentence. It's ridiculous how we twist and turn every word someone says and come out the other side of the logic with a fully realized portrait of their personality. All the candidates love their country. That doesn't require evaluation.

rhurst   February 20th, 2008 6:52 pm ET

I just dont beleive her ,,,, I think she is lying and can not be trusted. I have watched this person and the sense od the world owes her is very strong ,,watch out america….If her husband wins the democratic nomination I am voting for McCain

Closely Watching   February 20th, 2008 6:52 pm ET

~not that CNN will print this however~

Thank you all for defending Michelle's statement and Sandra Goodman's post was especially eloquent. I have been an avid amateur politico for 30 years now and while I have always loved America and what it once stood for I have not been proud to be an American for many moons now. Regardless of whether you support him or not Senator Obama has done something nearly unheard of in the living memory of this country…he has managed to get hundreds of thousands of previously apathetic citizens to put aside their cynicism and boisterously support someone. His sudden and unexpected appearance on the political scene has been like the proverbial pebble dropped into the water and the ripples it produces This has been a primary contest that will go down in history, and there are actually two catalysts to thank-the current administration's ineptitude and the mess it has put us in and Senator Obama challenging us all, like none before him, to become involved in some way.

marie   February 20th, 2008 6:52 pm ET

sure, Michelle Obama loves her country the same way that Barack Obama has done a lot for it. Rhetoric much?

roy CA   February 20th, 2008 6:52 pm ET

why cant people first learn the english language first before criticism. "really"is an adverb and is also an intensifier. really proud does not say one is not proud. it intensifies one's degree of proudness. sure there have been times we have been more proud of this nation than at other times. this is what Mrs obama was saying. lets not be ignorant like Mrs McCain.

Ron A   February 20th, 2008 6:53 pm ET

I call bs. Here is a woman who has spent her whole life in the US and is only just now proud of America. So is she only now proud because it appears that her husband may have a shot at the presidency. Does that mean she would not be proud of America otherwise… you simply can not take it back once you say it. And 99% of the time what you say is what you believe and you just didn't want anyone else to know before you slipped up and said it….

Dave in NY   February 20th, 2008 6:53 pm ET

I saw the clip and didn't see anything more than someone caught up in an emotional moment. When did we cede our ability to think for ourselves to hired hands, pollsters and personalities? I don't need someone to interpret for me what I saw and heard and I didn't find anything offensive about her remarks at all. Having people telling us what she REALLY meant - now that's offensive.

bob   February 20th, 2008 6:55 pm ET

Cindy, I don't think you noticed that all Americans have not had the same life as a "white blond."..and that many patriotic citizens have had to endure people like you while living in the projects….it is time for you to ride in the back of the bus…..it is too bad that the good Senator has to have you hanging on ………

W. T. Moses, Boca Raton, Florida   February 20th, 2008 6:55 pm ET

She meant what she said the first time. I think it is time that Obama and Clinton get out of politics and do what they do best, e.g., exaggerate, lie, etc. I still want to know what Hillarious Clinton's true life style is. God bless America and get John McCain in the white house.

Nick   February 20th, 2008 6:55 pm ET

Am I voting for Michelle or Bill? No. The only difference is Bill is also a President, so he's not your average spouse. But really, we shouldn't care about anything these spouses say. I wonder if Cindy was proud of her country during her Vicodin addiction, or during the Keating Five scandal.

Gloria   February 20th, 2008 6:56 pm ET

Anyone with half a brain knew that Michelle Obama was not making disparaging remarks about her country! Given the struggles I'm sure she has faced because of her ethnicity she would have ample ground not to be proud of some of the behaviours exhibited by the great citizens of the US. As if none of you have ever said something that was not articulated exactly as you meant it!
Get over your self righteous selves and prepare to meet our next leader- President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama!

Hopemonger in NYC   February 20th, 2008 6:57 pm ET

Honestly, it seems that one can't even express a simple sentiment in the United States anymore. I'm proud to be an American and I also love this country. However, I COULD be prouder, I want to be prouder. Indeed, Senator Obama and his supporters make me prouder. When you see how involved and innovative the Obama campaign and its volunteers are not just as voters, but as citizens, one certainly feels like holding your head up higher. Challenging us to be better Americans is ultimately both
patriotic and democratic.

Ricky   February 20th, 2008 6:58 pm ET

if you are so feeble-minded and reactionary as to put such importance on a poor choice of wording, then please, don't vote. you are truly what's wrong with this country–not Michelle Obama. you are the type of person that thinks its "unpatriotic" to bad mouth our pathetic excuse for a president. oops, does that make me a freedom-hater? or worse, maybe i'm a flippin' terrorist. sorry, i'm not at all "proud of mah country" at this point in time and pathetic excuses for patriots like you are a big reason for it.

Patrick, Chicago, IL   February 20th, 2008 6:58 pm ET

Being proud is different from blind patriotism.
All of you who say "I'm always proud of America" Are either afraid of having your patriotism being questioned or ignorant to current and past events.
There are many things to be proud of America for; free speech (ironic, no?), freedom of religion, and many more attribute which I do not have time to list.
But there are also things we should not be proud of: our treatment of Native Americans during our founding and expansions of our country, racism (which still exists today), Japanese internment in WWII and our support of various despotic regimes.
So before you jump down Michele's through over the use of the word "proud" think about what you should and SHOULD NOT be proud of America for.
*Because if you can not recognize our faults then we have no ability to improve

AntiBrenda   February 20th, 2008 6:58 pm ET

Who did not understand what she meant to start with?
May be only a bunch of "Hillarians" who want it to sound bad so they can get a borrowed chance to make up ground.

Debbie   February 20th, 2008 6:59 pm ET

Wait till the first McCain Obama debate, John will expose the Obama team for what there are, fakes. I personally do not like anyone that is running…but, at least McCain would know what to do to keep this country safe.

Danielle dejean   February 20th, 2008 6:59 pm ET

I dont think that you should make Michelle apologize for any type of comment she made. .America has plenty work to do cleaning up its act. We all need to get our acts together. Michelle Obama, I've got your back . Keep Standing On The Shoulders of Martin Luther King and others like him. Your husband is the best canidate for president. I believe Jesus is the judge of every one.

sad party   February 20th, 2008 6:59 pm ET

Wait a second…. Where am I? Hmmm… I thought for sure I was trying to get to CNN.com, but it appears that some how I have been routed to a Fox News blog. Because, I know that the Democratic Party, that I am so proud to be part of, would not continuously tear apart their own members. OH WAIT, no no no, sorry, I'm wrong. That apparently IS the thing to do, a sure fire way to get your candidate elected.

Clearly, from reading the good majority of the blogs that it appears the general consensus from both Clinton and Obama supporters is, "Its my way or the highway." Really you guys?? REALLY? You are going to vote Republican if your favorite candidate doesn't make it?? How absurdly childish. And I thought the Republicans were the selfish ones.

What is even more laughable is the lack of political discussion that goes on here. Petty mud slinging, yes. Real political discussion? No.

Maybe I'm missing the point, would someone like to explain to me why this process has to be so negative?

Jim   February 20th, 2008 6:59 pm ET

It looks like the Rightwing is scared. They are frightened. And they should be.

In Wisconsin, Obama got THREE TIMES the vote that John McCain, the Republican winner, got. Even Hillary beat McCain, and she lost in a 17 point landslide.

McCain is going to be roadkill to the Obama wave. They are scared, and are attacking with all they've got. If this is it, it's pretty sad.

I even wonder if the RNC let McCain — who they dont like very much — win the nomination because they knew it was a lost cause.

Christiaan, Norman, OK   February 20th, 2008 6:59 pm ET

It kind of bothers me that she corrected what she said. I'm a loyal American and have devoted my life to the study and elaboration of its founding principles and deepest commitments, but I am not in the least bit proud of the way this country has conducted itself over the last handful of years.

We arrogantly throw our weight about in the world with an errant disregard for the consequences, we neglect and disavow our basic liberties out of a desire to protect our security, and have systematically disenfranchised ourselves through our apathy and total refusal to take responsibility for our situation and ignorance. I'm not pointing any fingers, as I'm just as guilty, if not more so, as most, but that doesn't mean that I can't simultaneously love this country and not be proud out it.

Thank you Mrs. Obama for telling us the truth, even if you felt compelled to retract it later because people are looking for any way they can find to attack your husband.

Obama '08!!!

Cheryl Taylor   February 20th, 2008 6:59 pm ET

This exchange about whether Michelle Obama loves her country is the pettiest piece of news I've seen in a long time. How can that be measured? It appears to be another weak shot at the Obamas.

Please, if they have something of substance, bring it forward, but in the name of God, if they do not, then stop wasting valuable air time with non-issues.

Each weak attempt to discredit the Obamas turns more and more people towards them, and away from the other candidates. I don't believe the other candidates will see that America is tired of the petty politics, until Senator Obama becomes President.

Duke   February 20th, 2008 6:59 pm ET

We all have betrayed America, and our founding fathers. From the lakes of Minnesota, to the hills of Tennessee, across the plains of Texas ,America is bleeding for the past 8 years. With over 4500 soldiers killed, 30k wounded, one million Iraqi dead, 5 million Iraqi refuges, 15 million American are losing their homes, recession, and the list goes on. We all played a role in wounding our country.
Give the lady a break, and lets all unite to restore America for the generations to come.

Susan A. Mims   February 20th, 2008 7:00 pm ET

As an African American, and Veteran, Michelle and Barak Obama is so far "Left" in the Democratic Party, center is a pipe dream. Again, the African American community is dazzled by "Bling." Sen. Obama, does not have the credentials to lead this country. Wake-up my fellow Democrats, don't be fooled by the flashing lights.

Robin, Henderson Nevada   February 20th, 2008 7:00 pm ET

When I heard that comment I said what in the world is this woman talking about, is she trying to derail her husband, its bad enough the guy is a lightweight on substance, but I got to give him credit he inspires many. I will Vote for him if he wins the Nomination, but I hope all the White Men that's flocking to him and voting to oust Hillary now are not Republicans in Sheep clothing–then turn around in November and Vote for Grandpa

WE LOVE YOU MICHELLE!!!

The naysayers, including the "Stepford Wife" McCain, are obtuse. I knew exactly what Michelle meant from the start.

GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!

Erin   February 20th, 2008 7:01 pm ET

I cannot believe that taking her words out of context is even an issue. What everyone should be focusing on is how Hillary is trying to undermind the American voters and use superdelegates to steal the election. She will stoop to any level to win. Thank God it is not working.

jack   February 20th, 2008 7:01 pm ET

oh please, this is the first time as an adult that I am proud to be an American, I don't know if I could support Hillary Clinton if she won, If he doesn't win this time there will be no second chance. What is with this woman. As a Independent my vote goes elsewhere.

Bonheur   February 20th, 2008 7:01 pm ET

Michelle, I understood what you meant from the get-go! You are going to be attacked quite a bit, hold you ground, a lot of us out here are pulling for Barak. You will make an awsome first lady. Don't let the critics get to you, that's only their job.

jack   February 20th, 2008 7:01 pm ET

Hillary is desperate!

Liam   February 20th, 2008 7:03 pm ET

African Americans have been voting at the 90% level for White Democrats for decades, so stop calling them racists on the very first time that they have voted that way for a half white Democrat.

Susan Alexa   February 20th, 2008 7:04 pm ET

My comment is this, if anyone, I mean anyone had made the statement of, " and I quote for the first time I am proud to be an American" other than the Obama family who seems to be able to do know wrong no matter how insulting or arrogant, it would have been taken as the truly alarming statement it was and still is!
I am quite taken back by the desperation of Americans to grab on to the illusion of what they feel is real. I am sorry to say, this action and the many actions of the Obama campaign have brought me to the conclusion of how just in trouble we as a nation are in, that we would accept unacceptable behavior.

Have we as people, been so beaten down by the Bush administration, we will look to false hope and lack of experience that will only drive us further into destruction? I now can say, I am sadden by what is taken place, and should Obama be chosen to be the Democratic nominee, I will for the first time in my 33 years of voting, cast my vote for the least of two evils, and vote for McCain who at least has integrity far beyond Obama!

Dwight   February 20th, 2008 7:07 pm ET

Thank you, all you dumb liberals for telling the rest of us "what she meant to say"!!! She made a gaffe and as your darling liberal columnist has said: "A political gaffe is really an expression what the person really feels."

LatinoNation   February 20th, 2008 7:07 pm ET

So un patriotic I belive that an American any American would always no matter what LOVE THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and be soooooooo PROUD!!! no excuse none !!!

Texasboo   February 20th, 2008 7:07 pm ET

Folks this "weak attack" against the Obama's mean that the competition couldn't find anything to stick, so they are twisted words. Let me tell you that the it's a shame what they did to that horse (the dead horse).

Looks like the tag team of nasty, partisan politics work well for McBush and Clintonare politics s usual, the same old dame old. Time for change.

TEXAS FOR OBAMA

Nari   February 20th, 2008 7:08 pm ET

Oh BTW I am sure she didn't mean that she wasn't proud of America but it just shows to go we are ready to give a leap of faith to the Obama's but if anybody from the Clinton Family had said this, we'd all be screaming for their blood.

CNN post my comments!!!!

g.richards   February 20th, 2008 7:10 pm ET

Alexander Mooney:

My apologies for taking you and your staff to task over the "I love America" statement. I know the job you and your staff is doing is tough enough without having to be subjected to negative comments. My apologies to you all. Sorry i got off issue. g. richards

It is GREAT in America to be excited to participate in the political process. I have not seen the excitement Americans have shown in the political process for the past 50 years. I am so proud to see my 28, 26, 24, 21, & 19 year old children get so excited about the political process and their contributions and support for President Obama. Keep on KEEPING ON First Lady, Michelle Obama!

Teddy, MS   February 20th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

OMG, the Cindy doll talks.

Of course Cindy, we all love our country. DUH….

Bubba   February 20th, 2008 7:14 pm ET

The union ticker was closed so I will post here. Hillary knows where Jimmy Hoffa is.

Tim   February 20th, 2008 7:14 pm ET

Has anyone noticed that Clinton supporters USE CAPITAL LETTERS WHEN THEY WRITE!!!!

Clinton supporters…. Bill-O has said far worse, so do not judge her and attack her when you have blood on your hands too.

Just a mistake on her part…. thats what happens when you are a new face in the political world.

truth machine   February 20th, 2008 7:14 pm ET

"After her original comment she certainly should not be first lady."

It's hard to be proud of a country with people like you in it.

I'm not a fan of hers but the criticism is a little unfounded. I'm more concerned about Barack's momentum since he is not ready to be president. Moreover Clinton has the blueprint for change and the skill to make it happen; Obama just has vague

I am not Hillary bashing but how does being first lady for 8 years make her the better candidate to be president. It seems she did not do such a good job managing her campaign finances.

Any Democrat for President in 2008 is better than another GWB.

Grace   February 20th, 2008 7:16 pm ET

I know this women she is trully an American story. She came from poverty and was able to rise up and graduated from one of the best schools in America. She us an ivy league graduate.

zebra   February 20th, 2008 7:17 pm ET

This whole "scandal" about whether Michelle Obama is proud enough of her country reminds me of the atmosphere that prevailed after 9/11. Journalists were "un-American" if they said anything critical about Pres. Bush; senators (HRC among them) became "yes men and women," and suddenly censorship was a hallowed norm. We see where THAT got us. Who is to say that the truest patriots are not the ones who are willing to call a spade a spade? If the country hasn't given Michelle THAT much to be proud of until now, then why should she pretend that it has? What matters is that notwithstanding her doubts, she has spent her working lifetime trying to make this a country she can be proud of. I for one admire her efforts.

Peter   February 20th, 2008 7:17 pm ET

More excuses.
Just apologize already.

B. Smart   February 20th, 2008 7:19 pm ET

I don't think that Cindy McCain should start acting like Hillary Clinton.
People will start to get the impression that she's a stiff non-sensitive
mannequin reminiscent of the Stepford wives. I am sure that Michelle Obama loves America, and will make a fabulous first lady. She is a
highly educated Harvard and Yale person, and a person of the highest
character. She will help to greatly uplift our country. OBAMA 08!
