WASHINGTON (CNN) - Texans appear poised to favor Republican front-runner Sen. John McCain over either of the Democratic candidates for president in the general election, a CNN/Opinion Research Poll released Thursday shows.

Assuming McCain is the Republican presidential nominee, 52 percent of poll respondents said they would vote for him, compared with 44 percent for Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, the current Democratic front-runner.

New York Sen. Hillary Clinton fares slightly worse, with 42 percent, compared with 55 percent for McCain.

"19 percent of Texas poll respondents said they would vote for the third-party candidate"

This statistic proves just how stupid Texans really are. The fact that this many people would pledge to vote for a candidate without even a name or stance on any political issues astounds me. I guess I shouldn't be too surprised though, you guys did vote for Bush TWICE.

God I want to move to Canada...

Texas   February 21st, 2008 10:45 am ET

I'm a democrat and I would gladly vote for McCain in the general election come november if Obama gets our party's nominee. Look if I want inspiration, change, hope, unity I go to church and pray to my lord and savior, not some smooth talker like Obama. All these things that Obama "preaches" comes within one's self to change. Nobody can change anybody unless that person wants to. Apparently all those people that are supporting Obama because Hillary is "old" politics have chosen not to change for what her husband did, not her. It's like saying to all those women whose husband's have cheated on them that it's their fault for what their husband's did. All she did was stand by her husband, like the marriage vows say "through good and bad", and with Hillary I know that is what she will do and has done for the American people and this beautiful country. And to all you Clinton hater's, last night I went to her rally at the Dodge arena in Hidalgo, Texas and she was great! She got down to specifics and that's what we all wanted to hear. For all that other stuff (inspiration, hope, unity, change, etc....) we'll just show up at church on Sunday morning and Wednesday evening or pray in our home. God Bless American and Hillary Clinton!!!!!!!!!!

McCain denies close relationship with lobbyist
Read the entire New York Times article
very interesting.

Obama 08

Sandy   February 21st, 2008 10:17 am ET

Florida local polls show the same. Florida leaning toward McCain in November. Doesn't surprise me, Obama basically said Florida was a waste and made it very clear the Floridians have no voice.

Barack Oprah   February 21st, 2008 10:16 am ET

Obama for the worst president in the US history!!!
Show the rest of the world how kind we are!!
We can make the history.
"YES WE CAN"

GO OBAMA!!!

Dave   February 21st, 2008 10:16 am ET

YEEEEEEEEEEEEHAWW

4 more years of Bush-style idiocy. Giddyup!

Texan Man   February 21st, 2008 10:08 am ET

Stupid Poll. Even CNN analysts know it's meaningless. This will change A LOT once the primary begins.

Just last year, the same stupid poll showed Hillary Clinton beating Obama by a significant margin.

People that believe this crap are naive.

Obama 08.

Tanaya   February 21st, 2008 10:06 am ET

We shall see. November is a long way away and as I recall, people thought Clinton had the Democratic nomination in the bag just a few months ago.

People Demand Change   February 21st, 2008 10:00 am ET

Anyway we can give Texas it's independence?

Lisa   February 21st, 2008 9:58 am ET

Mccain's wife Cindy is a pill-popping drug addict ,who was caught stealing prescription drugs from her own non-profit business organization. Then had an affair with John Mccain while he was still married. Not to mention she had to go to rehab to clean up her act. Some first lady she'll make.

Proud to be a Texan   February 21st, 2008 9:54 am ET

One step at a time Obama supporters. First we win Texas, then the nomination, then we focus on the GE.

William B Lewis   February 21st, 2008 9:52 am ET

This article is like saying California is leaning Democrat in the general election!!

Obvious.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   February 21st, 2008 9:50 am ET

John McCain should never have entered this race, the skeletons in the McCain's closet haven't all came out yet and he and Cindy can deny, but it won't go away.

Larry Buchas   February 21st, 2008 9:48 am ET

That will change by election time. Barack will win over the fence sitters by November.

He's done a splendid job so far!

Unite the Democratic party   February 21st, 2008 9:47 am ET

It amazes me how anyone with just a itty bitty bit of sense could vote for john mccain when he is an exact replica of gw bush, HE IS ANOTHER GW BUSH, what part of that don't you people understand!!!? Can you not see the horrible job "the worst...THE WORST (hands down...no doubt about that)" president in US history has done and you people want to put his mini-me back in the oval office. "he is the most experienced candidate".......riiiiiight, look at what experience has done in the last 8 years! It has AMERICA IN A HOT MESS!

You john mccain supporters need to pull your head out of the sand or out of your.................and smell the 'CHANGE' that americans are calling for!!! WHATS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE????????????????

AJ   February 21st, 2008 9:44 am ET

Hey – good for Texas!! If Obama becomes the democratic nominee, I will switch my party affiliation (I have NEVER voted for a republican) and vote for McCain!!

GaVoter   February 21st, 2008 9:41 am ET

Add to that Florida, Ohio, New York and every other state that Hillary beat Obama in... Yep, just scratch the surface of that progressive party and WHUMMMP, there it is!! Racial prejustices from even the best of the so-called "tolerant".

Sad really. That we can't get rid of it and that some are so good at fooling others about it..

College Student, TX   February 21st, 2008 9:40 am ET

I'm a college student in Texas and I sure as heck wouldnt be voting for McCain. We need new direction and hopefully the rest of Texas will begin to see that!

Obama 08!!

GLADYS   February 21st, 2008 9:25 am ET

I CAN SEE FROM MANY COMMENTS, THAT MANY AMERICAN PEOPLE WANTS " A CHANGE". THAT HAPPENS IN VENEZUELA IN 1998. SEE WHAT IS GOING ON IN MY COUNTRY. ONE HAS SO MUCH MONEY BUT WE ARE LIVING ALMOST LIKE THE POOREST COUNTRY FROM THIS WORLD. " GOD BLESS YOU, AMERICANS "

Terry   February 21st, 2008 9:22 am ET

November is a long ways off. Texas will change there minds, there is no way the country wants four more years of Bush, which is what we are going to get under McCain. I am a proud veteran who served under Ronald Reagan and was directly affected by the Beirut bombing on October 23, 1983. I lost a lot of fellow Military Police during that event where just a year prior to the bombing we were all together at the academy. I think the country is coming to terms that we are breaking away from a generation of politics; just hopefully we can do it tactfully and with respect to others. I think that is why a large majority of Americans are supporting Obama in comparison to Clinton. Clinton just reminds us of the same old you know what. Go Obama 2008.

Stephen   February 21st, 2008 9:18 am ET

that's kinda close, I can't wait for a fifty state campaign with Obama, its going to be a landslide.

joe   February 21st, 2008 9:18 am ET

FLORIDA WILL ALSO GO TO MCCAIN SINCE OUR DEMOCRATIC

VOTES WERE NOT COUNTED BY OUR OWN PARTY AND WE

HAD THE LARGEST VOTER TURNOUT AND ALL THREE

CANDIDATES WERE ON THE BALLOT

DEMOCRATS FOR MCCAIN......THANKS TO DNC

Sammy   February 21st, 2008 9:15 am ET

And don't forget, Texas gave us G W Bush.

S.B. Stein E.B. NJ   February 21st, 2008 9:14 am ET

This is no great surprise... Look at some of the people from Texas: the current president, Harriet Meirs and Alberto Gonzales. These people aren't the smartest or nicest. I hope that they don't represent all of Texas because that would mean that Texas is full of a bunch of people who like authoritarians who claim to be conservatives.

Jack   February 21st, 2008 9:13 am ET

Did anyone hear Clintons remark about "Cowboy politics" or something like that., yesterday?
A snide remark about cowboys right before TEXAS is to vote seems like a silly mistake for someone ready to take the helm "from day one"?

Bruce Wayne   February 21st, 2008 9:11 am ET

I predict they will go with Gomer Fudd over Mcstain actually.

John   February 21st, 2008 9:11 am ET

I bet not, who's going to vote for Mccain now that everyone know hes just like Bill cheatin on his wife i knew there wasn't something quite right with Mccain he just didn't seem right. I'mm voting for Huckabee now.

TheLeftNut   February 21st, 2008 9:07 am ET

McCain is very Bushy. Texans love bush.

Rob,NC   February 21st, 2008 9:00 am ET

It's also only February and if the polls are that close, there is plently of time for Obama to make up ground. I could care less if Obama doesn't win Texas, because he will easily win all the big Blue states like CA, NY, NJ, IL. Then he just needs to get a few swing states...perhaps MO and VA and he should be good.

McCain is just too out of touch with the total needs of America. He may be a good authority on the military and homeland security - 2 items that certainlly need to be dealt with, but he is terrible on domestic issues...almost to the point where it seems like he doesn't have a clue.

People say that Obama is full of nothing but rhetoric (which I truly don't agree with), but have you listened to McCain? What solutions is he proposing. The other day after the WI primary, he said something to the effect of "I know Americans are concerned about the economy. Well we'll figure out how to fix it." Gee, thanks John. What are you going to do, have the Marines raid all of the sub-prime mortgage companies and hold them hostage until they freeze rates?

Die hard right-wing Republicans are just either too stupid or ignorant to vote any differently. Spending 100 years in Iraq is not going to put food on your tables.

DoerNeeded   February 21st, 2008 8:57 am ET

Yes, I would rather vote a war hero with integrity than a talker with a mouth full of words!

Roger, SC   February 21st, 2008 8:57 am ET

I am not surprised this is George Bush's la la land ....and I'll bet you that most in Texas think he has done a fine job as president, it goes to show you that most republicans are very narrowed minded and are brainwashed into thinking that the GOP is the party that is best to serve our nation regardless of the horrible condition that GW has gotten our nation into..most republicans have done or are doing worse than most democrats have ever thought of doing yet they hide it behind the bible or the republican party... I feel the same way about my state of SC

david   February 21st, 2008 8:56 am ET

Well, of course they're leaning towards McCain in Nov. And since McCain has the nomination locked-up already, Texan Republicans are also going to vote for Obama March 4th in the Democratic Primary to knock Hillary out, then turn around and vote for McCain in November. That's perfectly legal in Texas.

What part of OBAMA CAN'T BEAT MCCAIN do these Obama zombies not understand?

If you want the Democrats in the White House for the next 4 years, you had better vote for the only person that can beat McCain.. Hillary. I'm in TX and I know I will.

grandpa go home!   February 21st, 2008 8:51 am ET

they just do not know how to vote, remember W? they voted for him and what they GOT?

SCAron   February 21st, 2008 8:34 am ET

Did anyone expect any differently? Why did CNN spend money to conduct this poll on Texas? By the time it would be in play, so many of the other swing states would have swung Democrat that it wouldn't make a difference. Next time they do a Texas poll, poll to see how the primary might match up.

Nick Martinez, Austin, TX   February 21st, 2008 8:25 am ET

What is amazing about this? The last time a Democrat won Texas was in 1968 when Humphrey won it (and only by a very little bit) and the last time a Democrat won it outright was in 1964 when Johnson won it (because it was his home state). I thought everyone knew a Republican was going to win Texas in the general election?!?!?! I'm a Texas Democrat and I think it is more amazing that it is so close than that McCain is expected to win.

rudy W   February 21st, 2008 8:15 am ET

So it should be. Texans are too smart to buy into Obama's pop culture.

TheLeftNut   February 21st, 2008 8:13 am ET

No suprise there.

That's like saying NJ is leaning towards the democrats in November.

Janice   February 21st, 2008 8:02 am ET

Not for long. McCain's history shows that he can be bought by friends and lobbyists. He does not stand a chance in the general election.

tina   February 21st, 2008 7:58 am ET

Not after his ties to lobbyists, now americans would know that being a war hero deos not translate to being a good president.
Obama 08

Mary   February 21st, 2008 7:57 am ET

All you Texans going to vote another 4 years of Bush in November? 'Cause that's what your vote for McCain is about. Come on, surprise the rest of us and really think about it this time.

Wayne, Greenville TX   February 21st, 2008 7:43 am ET

I expect my fellow Texans to come to their senses in the coming months. I don't think this country can survive for more years of Bush-style mismanagement. Which is what we'd get from a McCain presidency.
