AUSTIN, Texas (CNN) - The audience loved Clinton’s first response when asked about a time she had been tested – a deliberately vague answer that drew a knowing laugh from many in the audience. She then laid out a very eloquent response, essentially saying that her crises are nothing compared to the problems average voters confront. It's one of the few debate answers to get a standing ovation.

I think that ending speech was an attempt to gain public sympathy. She really bombed, and the part where she said he was all talk, she was sheepish. She is full of it and not presidental, just sucking up!

CMS   February 21st, 2008 10:11 pm ET

I think her final words would have been amazing, if I actually believed them.

Linda Morales   February 21st, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Clinton showed all she is: smart, eloquent and real

Brian   February 21st, 2008 10:11 pm ET

The experience thing is not working for Hillary she needed to come with a different niche. I did think her close was very professional.

susan vigilante   February 21st, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Hillary is the best. I just dont get it why a lot are enamored with Obama. He wasnt eloquent this evening he stumbled quite a bit. Hillary was a wonderful Presidential type.

NJL   February 21st, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Obama is an empty suit !
incredibly real, incredibly Presidential!!

Hal   February 21st, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Obama clearly focused on stopping hate crime against the Hispanic Community and bring about change to immigration, reform, etc,,,

Emanuel Volakis   February 21st, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Sorry to say that I felt that her closing words were the most disingenuous words she muttered all night. She built it up like she was going to talk about her self and then she made an emotional appeal by using the fallen warrior as the punch line!! Smooooth as silk....that is what 30 years in DC Politics earns you...the "experience" to sew words together to sound good at the right moment. She is a consummate politician...I will give you that....unfortunately she does not have an authentic bone in her body.

She is for the rich, by the rich...JUST LIKE BUSH....but for a different group of rich people....a divider...not a uniter and definitely not a leader of free people.

HKS   February 21st, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Like they both said...whatever happens, we will be so lucky just to have the Democrats back in the White House!!! Hillary does have more experience, but Barack has more charisma...let's just hope that he really will put action behind those inspirational words, if he's elected. I would prefer Clinton, but would be happy with Obama. This race has been very interesting though...she could very well come from behind, & take the prize. It wouldn't surprise me a bit.

Tim   February 21st, 2008 10:11 pm ET

CNN made sure that Obama talked 70% of the time. That was poorly moderated. And, I bet you won't post this, either!

Jordan Fitzpatrick   February 21st, 2008 10:11 pm ET

The ovation was clearly for both candidates and signaled the end of the debate.

E Lee   February 21st, 2008 10:11 pm ET

I think she let loose and showed her true feelings about wanting to help and I think she can do it! Go Hillary!!!!!! I find Obama great and rhetoric and pontificating with an impressive voice but that doesn't mean diddly when it comes down to the ability to do the job!

As for the healthcare, I grew up a military brat and I now have the big HMO Kaiser. Give me the care that Congress gets at the military hospitals over Kaiser any day.

MARIA IN TEXAS   February 21st, 2008 10:11 pm ET

The standing O was for the debate being over and because she shook his hand like she was finally admitting he is going to be the nominee. She might be able to make his short list for Vice President. "Whatever happens she will be fine?" That tells us has has come to the realization she is out of cash and gas and that Barack is on top. good news is she wont drag the party down and it was her best moment.

PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA NOW THAT HAS A GREAT RING TO IT!!

HE WILL BE GETTING MY LATINA VOTE IN TEXAS AND I WILL ALSO BE AT THE CAUCUS FOR HIM..

Irishspacemonk   February 21st, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Wasn't the standing ovation for both debaters????? Go Obama!!

drew   February 21st, 2008 10:11 pm ET

This article is a misrepresentation. The standing ovation it reports was not solely directed towards Senator Clinton. Both Obama and Clinton were being recognized following their final statements. The standing ovation was in acknowledgment of both candidates as the entire debate was complete.

Calan DeWald   February 21st, 2008 10:11 pm ET

...and I'm so sick of hearing "we need change"...I hope after this campaign ends i never hear the word change again. Why does Obama own the word "change", a change would be to have a democrat in office, either candidate is an equally large change in our government. I hate how all the Obama chasers say "don't vote Hillary! we need change!"

Unless Barack has some plan to provide Americans with plenty of quarters, nickels, dimes and pennies....he doesn't have a plan for "change" any more so than Hillary.

TXMom   February 21st, 2008 10:11 pm ET

I always wanted a Hillary/Ann ticket. Ah well, I'm sure Ann is looking down proudly at Hill right now.

Like Ann, Hillary walks her talk and you've got to respect both of them for that.

I'm sorry, I like BO, but I think we've had quite enough of those who consider themselves the 'annointed one'. We need someone who can roll up their sleeves and help clean up this mess and I believe Hillary has proven she is the right person for the job.

Jason and Donelle   February 21st, 2008 10:11 pm ET

I am so sorry, but Hilary's closing comment was so glaringly disengenuous I can't believe some of you can't see through it. Her crises don't compare to the average American? How many of us have been internationally humiliated and had to stand by our cheating spouse during his impeachment process? That has to be one of the most difficult trials a human being can go through, and to minimize that shows me her truest character flaw- putting politics above authenticity.

KC in Ohio   February 21st, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Hillary gave a closing that was good. I thought she was going to cry but she pulled it together. I'm happy for her. However, I believe her last statement sounded like defeat. Obama was stronger in this debate than I've ever seen him. To me, watching him debate is like watching your favorite basketball team at the foul line to shoot free throws to win the game and you know the strongest foul shooter isn't shooting. But with a little practice, they just might be decent. Barack looked very Presidential tonight and I hope the people of Texas aren't duped by another Hillary emotional moment.

Anne   February 21st, 2008 10:10 pm ET

fabulous! That's our girl! We love you Hillary!

d   February 21st, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Her ending respons was good, yes, but she's had years of opportunities to rehearse that response. Close call, they were similar, but Obama still has an edge of being able to be a bit more in touch with the average person, and Clinton is too close to the status quo.

mary   February 21st, 2008 10:10 pm ET

You go GIRL!!!!!! Hilary all the way!!!!

FM   February 21st, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Did anyone notice that it was the END of the debate, and maybe that's why people stood up? It's all timing folk. She tanked seriously, only coming up for air on the last comment. She smirked her way through that debate. She clearly not an orator.

manchester   February 21st, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Isn't it interesting that going negative no longer works in this campaign? That was perhaps the most interesting dynamic tonight. It is like the rules have changed. I think that is an important development and a direct result of Obama's approach and force of personality. I also think it will wreak havoc on the republican strategy if he is the Dem nominee.

Serge in Miami,FL   February 21st, 2008 10:10 pm ET

I viewed Hillary as the weaker of the 2 candidates. She avoided questions and continued to only speak about herself... Count how many times she used the word "I"... too much ego and pompous rhetoric from her. Obama is the stronger candidate.

joseph   February 21st, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Hilliary definitely has the most substance to offer. Obama is a smart young guy in Washington, but there are allot of smart young people in Washington. It does not mean all of them should run for president does it?

Senator Clinton offered a beautiful closing remark, BUT Senator Obama gets my $$ contribution and vote.

brian   February 21st, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Hillary CAN NOT beat McCain..

Both clinton's and Obama's positions are relatively the same.
Except for the fact that people hate clinton and will not work with her, nor will she work with them. Clinton can not admit to ever making a mistake or being wrong. Even when asked about the vote to go to war, she still will not admit it was a mistake.

Obama is the only chance for the Democrats to win this election.

And if the Super Delegates go against the popular vote – it will permanently fracture the Democratic party. People are finally getting involved and excited about making a difference and if the "super Delegates" slam the door on this, it will devastate the entire party.

Tommi   February 21st, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Thanks Anderson..You are doing well by me so far tonite..stay moderate and don't attack the Lady.

Murray   February 21st, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Watching from Canada with great facination, everyone on Anderson Cooper's panel seem to think it was a draw. I strongly disagree, as someone with no stake in the outcome, observing objectively, it was Clinton in my eyes who appeared as the obvious potential leader. Obama stumbled with basic words, Clinton was a clear and pointed oratator with real substance. I kind of see now how the Clinton camp is not only fighting Obama, but the media as well.
Clinton won this debate hands down.

Jimmie   February 21st, 2008 10:10 pm ET

sabastian   February 21st, 2008 10:10 pm ET

the ovation was the signal from everyone in the audience that the debate was over...and so coincide with the last words from clinton. she was trying to pull another emotional moment, and i saw it coming before she started it. great act, but she clearly bombed the rest of the debate.

Joe from Texas   February 21st, 2008 10:10 pm ET

To be honest, as a Hillary supporter, I feel as though she was making a concession speech with that last note. I think she needed to put herself above Obama in the debate and I think she failed. I think Obama will most likely win Texas and Ohio too. I will be happy to vote for whoever the democratic nominee is in November because both of them are fine candidates.

MelanieL   February 21st, 2008 10:10 pm ET

OK, it's time to stop the snide remarks – as both candidates acknowledged, there is a need for Democrats to unite to fight the election to make sure that one of these two excellent candidates makes it to the White House. Hillary is my preferred candidate, but I felt that at the end of the debate she acknowledged that Barack will probably win – she was gracious and she didn't hesitate to make it clear that she is focused on a Democratic win. Having said that, he needs to sharpen up his debate on economics!

Rosa   February 21st, 2008 10:10 pm ET

She clinched the debate there--

She found her voice - again. She presented herself as the bigger person, that this election is bigger than both of them-it's about the American people.

Great moment.

You negative people, just let it go. She showed we can and should just get along.

Will in Atlanta   February 21st, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Clinton was not only strong in her ending, she was and is substantial. Obama is without-a-doubt eloquent and appeals to many Americans who articulate "change" as their primary desire. But, just how willing is he to put himself in a position of controvery if he has to make a tough decision? That's where I believe he lacks confidence and ultimately experience.

Wake Up folks... especially those of you in Texas!
We should challenge ourselves to think about our best coaches, teachers, bosses, leaders... rarely were they just about words – experience and the ability to make a tough decision is what made them great.

nohamp   February 21st, 2008 10:10 pm ET

"by george, he's [finally] got it." hillary has had decades to prep for this moment. whereas in a few short months, obama has risen to the arena like the star that he is. now folks - just like the labor unions, like sen. kennedy, like anthony lake, like robert reich, none of them zombies, - i'm for obama. but hillary is fabulous and she aced the last question. alas, i doubt i'll see a single hillary supporter here able to say a positive thing about anyone with the gall to oppose her 'inevitable' ascent. too bad.

John - Spokane, WA   February 21st, 2008 10:10 pm ET

HILLARY WON TONIGHT AT EVERY TURN ! SHES A WINNER AND TEXAS WILL PROVE IT. SO WILL OHIO, VERMONT, RHODE ISLAND, PENNSYVANIA & OTHERS.

THEN ALL OF THESE REPUBLICANS PRETENDING TO BE OBAMA SUPPORTERS CAN GO BACK TO THEIR OWN PARTY & FIGURE OUT WHAT THEIR GOING TO DO ABOUT THE MCCAIN MESS. YA BETTER GET HUCKABEE OUT OF THE BULLPEN & GIVE HIM THE BALL CAUSE U GOT SPLAINEN TO DO LUCIES !

Analyzing Obama   February 21st, 2008 10:10 pm ET

But the whole "inspiration" aspect, and the Kennedy comparison in particular, is beginning to worry me. I like what he says, but does he have any concrete plans to back up these dreams he's selling us? Rallying people to have hope is a wonderful thing, but can a man with only four years' experience in the U.S. Senate actually deliver on all the changes he speaks so eloquently about? Not a chance.

Eric   February 21st, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Hillary has my vote. She is a truly caring person. She even admitted that Obama is a great speaker and there is no doubt in my heart that she will perform with the issues she speaks.

Clinton's standing ovation was more because it was the end of the debate than it was a response to her comment!! Get it right.

Stacey Blersch   February 21st, 2008 10:09 pm ET

Hillary Clinton did do an excellent job on the last question, much better than Senator Obama. However, I believe the standing ovation was because it was the last question, and the mediator, had thanked the candidates, during the applause after Senator's response. This is a bit misrepresentative statement to state she got a standing ovation for her response. The crowd was very enthusiastic, and stood up after every commercial.

Donna, Long Island, NY   February 21st, 2008 10:09 pm ET

YEAH HILLARY!!!!!
Hands down, you're the champ. That ending was superb. Go Girl.

Lauisa   February 21st, 2008 10:09 pm ET

After today's debate I KNOW she will make a great president; she has substance and she'll be able to work across the party lines, she's respected and Senator Obama will never make presidency, unfortunately the people of this country are not ready for him, he is still wet behind his ears....in four or eight years it will be a different story. day

John   February 21st, 2008 10:09 pm ET

"Wherever happens... I will be fine" I thought she implied seeing the inevitable, the eventuality of this democratic primaries - that Obama is running away with the nomination. It seemed that seen her days numbered – she has seen the handwriting on the wall. Hillary has prepared herself psychologically to head towards the exist.

VIRGINIA VOTER   February 21st, 2008 10:09 pm ET

Regina S.   February 21st, 2008 10:09 pm ET

I think Hillary's last statement shows a realization that she might have to resign herself to that fact that she may never be president. She was real and human and seemed to concede.

Barack was very presidential tonight. He was calm and strong in his responses. He actually answered the questions that were asked. I think he was brilliant and personable.

This is an exciting time to be an American!

Ask Barack and Michelle Obama who they voted for in 1992 and 1996. Surely it wasn't George W. Bush and Bob Dole.

Aneta   February 21st, 2008 10:09 pm ET

Yes, good for her.Not too many candidates get standing ovations! She did awesome.
Barbara Atlanta,GA, what is it that is calculated about her, and not about Barack? Is he not a calculated candidate? And if that is the case, is it not the time when a VERY CALCULATE person will be a president ?

Linda DeFine   February 21st, 2008 10:09 pm ET

I also thought that she made a great point when she could name off all the things that are going on in the world in just the last week that would be inportant for a president to be ready on Day one. She is really a fighter. She is strong and confident. Barack is very tentative in his speech and is worried about making a mistake.

She is the only "presidential" candidate running as far as I'm concerned. And that final statement was the capstone to prove it.
Also, I'm so sick of the media and average citizens saying that Hillary has cried. She never cried! Her voice showed emotion with a slight tremor in her voice. This really irks me as a woman. It is pure sexism and that's a topic that's been left out of the media during this primary.

Mary, you must not work as a professional, "AS A WOMAN, YOU NEVER CRY OR GET EMOTIONAL WHEN WORKING WITH MEN! If you're beautiful, you may get away with it, ONCE. Men behave like your little brother. Always.

Clinton supporters have been banging the same drum as McCain supporters. That is "don't believe the hype."

My reaction to that is "What Hype". Take the time to actually listen to the speeches he gives. You WILL hear the substance along with the style.

Suddenly, being an eloquent speaker is a bad thing? Seemed to work well for President Clinton a few years back.

stan, OH   February 21st, 2008 10:09 pm ET

Barak gets 10/10 on being able to answer more effectively to the questions being put forward by the panel. I think it is time people begin to appreciate who is the smarter of the two, not just the most popular. Hillary frankly insults my intelligence by her needless segweys to multiple topics that she thinks are her strong points, rather than giving an honest answer.

becky   February 21st, 2008 10:09 pm ET

i watched the debate tonight and i thought hillary done very well,i really think people are coming down on her to much,as far as i concern,i also think ted kenndy should quit his day job and really give up his singing job to the voters

Nate   February 21st, 2008 10:09 pm ET

Perhaps I am the only one ... but Hillary's closing story seemed to me to be a little prepped. I had the vague feeling that her debate coaches had instructed her to work in the VA hospital story - one way or another - in order to demonstrate that Hillary really does have an empathetic side.

Obama Is The Best   February 21st, 2008 10:09 pm ET

Only standing ovation? Yeah, the debate was over so they got a standing ovation. How can you honestly believe it was anything more than that, it was NOT a standing ovation for her closing. And the tears were just around the corner too.

Martha   February 21st, 2008 10:09 pm ET

Hillary's closing was good - but not enough. For most of the debate, we heard the same old Shrillary!
Obama becomes more presidential each debate.

Mike   February 21st, 2008 10:08 pm ET

Hillary was right on one thing tonight. The super delegates won't decide this election for her.

Hillary failed to change the tide in this debate and as a result, her campaign will die in Texas and Ohio.

Also, Hillary, please end your campaign as gracefully as you ended this debate.

No need to drag this on any longer than it needs to.

It is a crying shame when we have twi so-called CNN journalists asking the same old, tired questions from the previous 18 debates. Their follow-up questions were weak and non-consequential. I could ask better questions in my sleep!

Doug   February 21st, 2008 10:08 pm ET

OBAMA 08   February 21st, 2008 10:08 pm ET

If she takes the next three states, which she is still in the lead, she has a real chance to turn the tide. I am not saying it is going to happen, but if the press wants a real fight, they will make it one. The press has been hugely responsible for obama's ascent.

Anne   February 21st, 2008 10:08 pm ET

I must say they Clinton really impressed me.. although it was plain to see... she says what we want to HEAR.. she is a professional politician and thats that! We need to remember that when we cast our votes.

SD   February 21st, 2008 10:08 pm ET

That was a good final answer, but overall Obama did much better in the debate than most people expected. He may have actually won the debate ....

I'm surprised when people say comments like the proposals are only talk ..... both sides have detailed proposals .. you don't run for president without having details on hundreds of issues, even though they may be prepared by your aides !!!!
The real difference is whose interests they have in mind ...

Poli   February 21st, 2008 10:08 pm ET

The remainder of the 1,600 seats, most of which were controlled by the Democratic party, were distributed by invitation only.

They were probably mostly Clinton supporters anyway – big deal. Yep, one "eloquent" sound bite wins the debate. Go figure.

Yolanda Diaz   February 21st, 2008 10:08 pm ET

It was great, wow, go Hillary go

Kat   February 21st, 2008 10:08 pm ET

Unlike everyone else I guess I was simply disgusted by her answer. She was appealing to people through injured soldiers... men and women who lost their limbs in a war she voted to pursue. I thought the tactic of talking about those who proudly limped in and those who came in on gurneys... well it was a direct emotional appeal and I'm sorry but it was a last ditch effort in a debate she very clearly lost.

You only have to look at her other points of essentially petty arguments throughout the debate to negate her well acted humane moment. Those people were standing out of respect for our soldiers. Period.

James   February 21st, 2008 10:08 pm ET

Obama is obviously an actor he is all talk and no action. Hillary is a problem solver she she won an Academy Award for her book it takes a village and that was no act!!!!!

Patty   February 21st, 2008 10:08 pm ET

I agree – her last statement was good but it sounded like a concession.

ronridino   February 21st, 2008 10:08 pm ET

Another desperate act @ the end for Hillary. First of all the standing ovation was not just for Hillary, IT WAS FOR BOTH....WATCH IT AGAIN!!! All I got was that she basically was conceding that Obama was on his way to the nomination and desperatly seeking affirmation. Her final words are words that anyone with a soul would and should feel! GIVE ME A BREAK

Ron R

Mike D   February 21st, 2008 10:08 pm ET

This is the talk of a lady grabing for straws.Sen. Obama is talking about CHANGE. This is what ALL American NEED!!!

Dave from NEW YORK   February 21st, 2008 10:08 pm ET

i thought Hillary Clinton really showed coviction in what she stands for in all the issues ... and she will stand up for all of us directly EVERYWHERE ... i felt she was talking to Me ... THANKYOU ! .. i cant say the same for Obama ....

tc   February 21st, 2008 10:08 pm ET

Does one question mean you automatically win the state? I think not. People must believe in you and believe in change... not the same old same old. Great leaders (President) must be able to motivate the American people and Congress...

Frank   February 21st, 2008 10:08 pm ET

It is funny that Hillary supporters are now impressed with Hillary's closing WORDS....after all they are just words right? haha. Anyway her closing speech was great, but Obama is still the superior candidate.

Obama for President

Tom   February 21st, 2008 10:08 pm ET

I thought the standing ovation was for both candidates at the end of the debate.

Teresa   February 21st, 2008 10:08 pm ET

She ended on a strong note...but she evaded the question.

Jing Tam   February 21st, 2008 10:08 pm ET

The media is is helping the weak to get even with the strong. At the end, it woke up and it get a speech writer with little experience as their president. Now it got worried...

Huh   February 21st, 2008 10:08 pm ET

"No matter what happens we're going to be friends."

Sounded like a concession speech, and her making up so that she can gracefully accept the VP position.

Jack   February 21st, 2008 10:08 pm ET

I was a soldier. I fought in Iraq. She has had everything handed to her her entire life. She has no close family members in the war. I've lost friends. I've had friedns lose limbs. Where does she get off using there suffering to help her campaign. She voted to send us there. SHe has the same blood on her hands a Bush

ann   February 21st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

If Hillary isn't the Democratic candidate, I will vote for McCain. She is by far more prepared to run this country than Obama and deserves the nomination.

Opradone   February 21st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

i am from Illinois and I have been listening to Obama's brilliant oratory since he was running for the senatorial job from our state. He is an amazing speaker, I just wish his actions spoke louder than his words. I cannot honestly say that he has done anything stupendous as a senator from our state. You want to be a believer because he speaks so enthusiastically, but you just can't find any substance, no action. I am a disappointed former Obama supporter who is going to be looking elsewhere for someone who can actually deliver. We need more than rhetoric to solve the problems that are facing most Americans!!

kyderbymom   February 21st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

He looked presidential. She looked sad. He looked confident. She looked like she was trying too hard.

Go Obama!

Tony   February 21st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

She did end very nicely.. I still support Barack though. Good debate

Ann Marie   February 21st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Thought it was a geat debate and I hope the pundits stop pressing the Obama train and get to substance. Glad to hear the pundits acknowledge Clintons responses as being what they were and that is "good". I hope they keep it up instead of being on the Clinton bash party.

benoit   February 21st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

obama won tonight in my mind. For those criticizing Schneider objectiveness, you seem biased towards Hillary in my opinion.

Sharon   February 21st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

I totally agree with Troy! Great rhetoric in the closing ....but how ironic to try to grab a tearjerker moment regarding the war that she authorized!!

J.B.   February 21st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Wow, perhaps Hillary will bow out graciously now that the writing is on the wall.

Good show, both of them.

James   February 21st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

I thought words don't matter to her? You know at the end she rehearse that but I stil wasn't feeling that. But all her answer wasn't even that good. She dodge a couples of questions.

Mario   February 21st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Obama is the best candidate for this country. She definitely knows that she has lost and her time has run out. Clinton's are trying to campaign like republicans.

Anonymous   February 21st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

The applause came at the end of the debate in appreciation of both canidates. Not in response to Sen. Clinton's final comment. Come on let's play fair!

rodrigo   February 21st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Troy,

YOU ARE A GENIU....WHAT ARE ALL THESE GOOD FINE PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT.

She should have never been there in the first place. She was sad because she felt the guilt of her VOTE.

Garcia, Brownsville, Tx   February 21st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Great closing but the fact of the matter is that she was only aggressive till the very end. We need someone his aggressive and positive through their presidency. I think Obama now has my vote Sorry Hillary but in Brownsville you did not pay much attention to actual voters you spent most of your time with the politicians.

Chris   February 21st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Why did Hillary's last answer sound so rehearsed and prepared?

joe   February 21st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

On universal healthcare why is it widespread news that Hillary will supposedly penalize people who don't get it. But Barack will also penalize parents who don't get it for their children. But he says it is alright because it will be there fault. What about single parents working two jobs just to put a roof over there kids head and food on the table?

Dave   February 21st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

HAYA how much dope have you been smoking ?SHE SUCKED TONIGHT Same old Bill and HIllary crap... Don't you think the people of Texas and Ohio have already made up their minds. The Polls all show Obama closing in.. In WI they said that it was too close to call and Obama won by almost 17 points.. not 2-5-10 IT WAS 17 points.. OBAMA IS going to get the nomination.

Kevin   February 21st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Mary,

So average citizens aren't suppose to have opinions on politics? Its not sexism to criticize her crying moment!! Its wanting a strong leader. Crying at a slight hint of challenge is not strong.

Troy,

Great point! Sounds a little hypocritical to me!

almost over   February 21st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Great closing by Clinton, but the ovation was for both candidates as debate finalization + she cocneded to Obama. Clinton did not score enough points win the election. Obama provided direct contrast. Clinton fought hard not to let Oboma have the last word on any issue recognizing his eloquence and substance.

Kelly Anne   February 21st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

"She was incredibly petty and small-minded the entire night."

I agree. Petty, testy, petulant.

Hillary just didn't perform well enough to stop her loss. She's lost the nomination. It is over. That's why she got teary at the end.

Toyin, Marietta, GA   February 21st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

70% of the time, Hillary was saying what was wrong with Obama, Obama defended himself 80% of the time, it was a fun debate, but Hillary need to stop that plagiarism thing, she has stolen more from Obama "Yes we wil" Yes we can in spanish. As mush as some diss Obama, most of us would not have his patience. He defended himself while not trying to dehumanise Hillary.....it is tough to debate that way, but he pulled it out.

amazing   February 21st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

I am not surprised that a long time Washington insider like Hillary knows, from years of doing these speeches/debates, what to say to get peoples attention; what is surprising is how someone like Obama is willing to stand up to this, and take on the old insider world of Washington. It is Obama representing most Americans who are sick and tired of these old insider Washington politicians who can't stand it when a newcomer could win and truly change the world and the world's vision of America.

Mike   February 21st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

She did *not* get a standing ovation. They ended the debate and everyone stood.

Reality check   February 21st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Dis anyone notice when Obama was ask about the economy first his response was very vague, then he says let Hillary speak and I will come back to that? He NEVER says let her speak and he never came back to it. He followed her lead every time. She is strong and a leader, Obama proved that by always following her lead.

wifeofabubblehead   February 21st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Troy,
I am a Navy wife. My husband signed up to go overseas. He was gone for 5 months and they sent him home becuase his boat needed him. He would have stayed longer if he could.
I was in favor of the war at first, based on the information given at the time.
I changed my mind just like a lot of other people in this Country.

You can't bash just Hillary for that. She was not the deciding vote.
If you must bash her then please do the same for John Kerry ( An Obama Supporter) he voted along with Hillary on the war.

John Valenti   February 21st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

A hillary comeback in these next primaries would seal the deal for the dream ticket. She has big states ,he has little states. I can't see them losing . However, if Obama sweeps, I can't see the Clinton machine playing second fiddle to anyone.

Hillary wins on Substance.

Obama should begin working hard to unite the Democratic Party.

Sound bites and No Hillary will once again sabotage the Party. It's unfortunate because The party was showing signs of a return to the Kennedy years.

Sione   February 21st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

She looks presidential...Obama...dont think so!

Jeremy   February 21st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Strange how different all the Clinton supporters are right now... all of a sudden rhetoric is where its at. Yes it was an excellent response. But certainly not enough to make a president.

No record for Obama to stand behind? How about a record of not supporting the war? The issue of judgment is vital to the commander-in-chief issue. Essentially, what Hillary did was cast a vote for issuing the President unlimited power to make war. This is both dangerous and against the fundamental guidelines the form our government. Barack Obama has the record, the judgment, and power to inspire ALL Americans. Barack Obama will be the next president.

James West   February 21st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Julie, the real deal? he has copied everything she says, for months now.

Kari   February 21st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

They were standing because the debate was over. Her answer actually struck me as a bit inauthentic.

christine   February 21st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

i agree with troy...

it is funny how she would use the soldiers to get sympathy from voters when she was the one who put them in iraq in the first place!

SHE VOTED FOR THE WAR!

She voted to have those soldiers to get their limbs cut off and face disfigured because of roadside bombs or what have you!

Yale   February 21st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Hillary's closing seemed to be the beginning of a grateful and positive transition to the realization of what she's facing. It's not that she isn't talented and worked hard all her life for America – it's that she's up against a once in a lifetime amazing communicator. I only hope she stays that way.

John Allen   February 21st, 2008 10:07 pm ET

This great ending you guys are talking about was lifted from john Edward's concession speech..Come on fellows do some work...

"Today, I am suspending my campaign for the Democratic nomination for the presidency. But I want to say this to everyone: with Elizabeth, with my family, with my friends, with all of you and all of your support, this son of a mill worker is going to be just fine. Our job now is to make certain that America will be fine."

John Edwards

maxine   February 21st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Clinton just did another tearful moment and won the campaign. Obama is gone.

Adam   February 21st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

The two are so amazing together , I surely home they become the DREAM team that all of the Democrats are excited about.

Either one would make a specatular President and the other would be a very wise and logical choice for Vice President.

I think its the sure fire way to stop the Republicans from recapturing the Whitehouse. What this country doesnt need it 4 more years of George Bush Lite.

Obama/Clinton 2008
Clinton/Obama 2008

Dream Tream 2008

GetAClue   February 21st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

I could have sworn that hilary had more superdelegate votes than Obama so what does Obamas supposed 700,000 bucks more have to do with it? This presidential election is about change but it is also about making history. Do we really want Hillary to run the country again because we all know that is exactly what happened when Uncle Bill was president.........

Scot N   February 21st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Somehow lost my first writing of this.

People, the standing ovation was because the debate was complete. She got a LOUD ovation, yes, but the continuation was after a signal that they were finished.

Are Clinton supporters SO desperate that they cannot hear the faint tone of defeat in her entire debate (exception: health care).

Jayjay   February 21st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Obama can't hold a candle to her, and that's the plain truth of the matter.

Ken   February 21st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Hillary was looking for a chance to put on a show, and she was able to pull it off on the last question. It almost looked scripted.

Too little, too late.

She looked sub-par, and the smirks on her face throughout the debate did not help her. The arrogancy was unbelievable, and her attempt to attack him was a complete failure.

Hillary just lost Texas.

Hilda Carter   February 21st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Again, Senator Clinton demonstrated a true understanding of the America peoples needs. She knows how and what to do to get us back on track. She is confident in her position because she has the experience and ability to achieve what needs to be done. Obama lacks confidence, experience and the know how. He is not capable of leading this country or to make presidential decisions in our best interests. I hope that voters can see the difference between the two candidates and support Senator Clinton.

Eric   February 21st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Troy is on the money! She tried to elicit an emotional response from viewers about the pain and suffering of the troops returned from Iraq with limbs off, disfigured faces, and shattered lives – but as we all know, her authorization vote was the very thing that allowed those same war victims to be led into harm's way! What a two-faced emotional blackmailer Hillary is!

Erika   February 21st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Obama's supporters are teenieboppers with signs and t-shirts. They are a bit cultish and it's a blind support. The man is just not as qualified or ready to be President. Period.

Hillary '08!

Felicia   February 21st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Obama said he will have a good judgment from day one but what about the judgment with Rezko home purchase? Obama himself called it a mistake (bone headed).

Craig H   February 21st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

She said nothing, she avoided the question because the only crisis she has lived through was convincing the public she loves Bill and its not a marriage for professional advancement.

jimclayton   February 21st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

It was indeed her best moment... but I don't think it's correct to attribute the standing ovation to that moment. Ms. Brown had made it clear that this was the last question of the debate, and since Senator Clinton's (excellent) closing remarks had a strong ending, it was clear that the debate was over. Having said that... when I saw it happen on TV, I knew it could be interpreted as an ovation for her statement, and not for both or for the whole debate.

Daniel K.   February 21st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

The moderator had said it was going to be the last question, and Obama had already answered the question. THAT'S why there was a standing ovation - it was for BOTH candidates. Clinton gave a strong answer but she did not earn a standing ovation.

Mark   February 21st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Her wording was very similar to a previous teary question in the past. Expect to see the video of this compared directly to that tomorrow on youtube, at which point it will seem a whole lot less significant.

Ultimately, the meanspirited barbs she made against Obama will be the big news story.

Experience you can xerox?! I don't think so.

Randy   February 21st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

I think that you guys put your own personal spin on Sen. Clinton's last remark. She tackfully tried to supress your final question with elogance, by telling everyone up front that we all KNOW what her most stressing/difficult experience was. So my question to you is why go there with her.

Justin   February 21st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Like it or not, Obama was the first to start telling the truth to the American People. Now Mccaina nd Hillary are following suit and for him to be no substance they sure are afraid of him. I mean he hasn't even won the nomination and they are attackign if he wrote his speeches and they all have speech writers. I mean its hilarious to see the republicans and clinton shaking......

melvin   February 21st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Hillary nailed him.
He is a very slick talker just like a President we now have when he run 4 and 8 years ago,

Ronald in B.R.,La   February 21st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

The audience understood Hillary's statement to be the last of the night. The handshake gave the impression that it was over and the "standing ovation" was for BOTH candidates. Even Campbell Brown contributed the ovation to the entire debate. The rest of CNN should get this right and stop saying it was for Hillary.

Shahrooz   February 21st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

That's why Americans are the best people in the world. They appreciate the sacrifice of others. Go Hillary!

Jason   February 21st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

"I am honored to be here with Barack Obama. I am absolutely honored." I think that Hillary was basically giving a pre-concession speech and trying to make Barack strong coming out of March 4th. It brought a standing ovation, but I really think it was due to her starting to show a concern for a strong, unified Democratic party and candidate. I think she is smart enough to see the writing on the wall. The numbers are very much against her. Barack only continues to cut her few leads rather than lose ground.

Rose A.   February 21st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

My candidate was Hilary, but after watching this debate I see that they are really similar in their view points. I think it is a loss to America not have both of them unite and run as president and VP.

Sandra   February 21st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

If the last comment of the night is the reason she wins Texas, all
I can say is, Good Luck America you are going to need it.

Martin Howell   February 21st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Bill,
Could the standing ovation have been for both candidates, since the debate ended immediately after she spoke? Pay more attention or start paying me to do it for you.

Jose   February 21st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Am I wrong but was Clinton asked to answer questions first much more often than Obama? In a way, it can be helpful to respond to an answer but also taking the lead on an answer can be beneficial.

Paula Moreno   February 21st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Tejanos aren't stupid – Clinton says what she thinks we want to hear. She's trying to woo people with emotional stories. She's an emotionless stone.

Obama was strong the ENTIRE debate. He'll be the MOST Diplomatic President we've had in over 20 years (before demonic Reganomics I mean).

Jema   February 21st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

After barely making it through the debate, Hillary needed to close strong. Unfortunately, the goal was for her to knock him down and she did not do that. Barack held his own and has continued to grow through each debate. I used to like Hillary; but for the life of me I can't recall one piece of legislation that she has sponsered or co-sponsered as a Senator. Not what she did as First Lady, but anything she has done as an elected official. Barack is not an empty suit; his suits just don't fit like everybody else's.

Iris   February 21st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Exactly Troy. Clinton is the biggest hypocrite! Even her husband has lost faith in her.

Anonymous   February 21st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

I felt that Hillary Clinton's last comment on her moment of crisis was completely cheesy, and not at all personal or authentic. I don't think she knows how to connect with voters in any real or personal way, like Obama does, and chose to exploit a tragic image rather than drawing on something substantive.

Hey   February 21st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

She just looks smug and phony. She looks down on the people. She is no better than the rest of us.

TVR   February 21st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

I believe that this was her best moment. I'm just glad that she didn't cry. I think she does much better when she shows a little more humanity.

sam   February 21st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

great debate either one will make a great president i perfer hillary clinton first for eight years then we will put obama in the white house for eight years we have two great leaders how lucky we are to have these great leaders dream team ahead?

Troy   February 21st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

The standing ovation was an ending to the debate and it was intended for both candidates

Leigh Ann Marshall   February 21st, 2008 10:06 pm ET

She gave him the bait to go negative, he didn't take it. She ridiculed him and his base, he stayed on his message. She gave a decent closing response, but at the end of the day, she couldn't knock him down. She's not getting my vote.

J. Perez   February 21st, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Senator Hillary R. Clinton I feel was the real Winner tonight. She is ready to be our next Commander in Chief and will beat the Republican Party in November. I was moved to tears with her eloquent words and the end. I felt that she connects to the people and speaks from the Heart. I don't want a change we can believe in, I want someone who is going to speak and help the people of America. Hillary Clinton has the experience needed to take office and get things done from day one. Go Senator Hillary Clinton.

J. Perez
Mission, Texas

Sheldon Carter   February 21st, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Mary, your words, "Her voice showed emotion with a slight tremor in her voice", coupled with the tears in her eyes constitutes CRYING!!!!

Dave. San Diego, CA   February 21st, 2008 10:05 pm ET

(superdelegates) "Obama has given them approximately $700,000 ".

What's really funny with this statement is Hillary Clinton was a recipient of some of those funds you are talking about.

Hillary LOST Texas and Ohio tonight.

Joseph Meyers   February 21st, 2008 10:05 pm ET

I think Obama would do better as white house press secretary for the Bush white house . He is a prime example of saying what ever is convenient and self promoting.

Kevin Zelko   February 21st, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Obama did win Texas.

Which gives him the win he needed...will that be number 11?

Julie   February 21st, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Why, oh why, can't Hillary do that more often? Brilliant – absolutely brilliant (just like her!).

The old adage is true - no matter what Hillary did tonight, she would have to perform twice as good to get half the credit. I'm still watching CNNs commentary, and they have yet to hear one single comment on an Obama weak moment.

I saw them – where was CNN??

Sidney   February 21st, 2008 10:05 pm ET

She received the standing ovation AFTER she shook hands with Obama and said what an honor it was to be on stage with him. I'm not so sure the audience was responding to her response on challenges as they were to the notion that there are two phenomenal candidates from which to choose.

James West   February 21st, 2008 10:05 pm ET

He wasn't on cocain this time. Bet his wife is strung out right now.

GO HILLARY   February 21st, 2008 10:05 pm ET

hillary is the only one who will win in november

OBAMA MAMA   February 21st, 2008 10:05 pm ET

NO KNOCKOUT PUNCHES FOR HILLARY MAYBE SHE CAN PRAY TO BE ASKED TO JOIN THE TICKET AT THE BOTTOM OF IT.

BARACK AND ROLL IN 2008.

OUR FUTURE IS SO BRIGHT THANKS TO HIM BEING A CANDIDATE THIS YEAR.

Ande   February 21st, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Hilary did well, but that was not the question, she should have said how she had been tested. She made a political speech. Be real! She was asked how she had been tested? Barack was honest and answer the question.

This yet another example of his honesty and he will be honest on day one

Janet   February 21st, 2008 10:05 pm ET

That was not a standing ovation for her, the audience was standing and clapping due to it was the end of the debate. If you are going to report the news, please do it honestly. Is this CNN, the Clinton National Network?

Debbie   February 21st, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Schneider, you could have tried to be a little more impartial

Michelle   February 21st, 2008 10:05 pm ET

I don't believe her nor do I trust her Obama isn't perfect but he is real , honest and gettiong the American people invoved. I am sick of her neagativity toward Obama, the non acknowledgement and all her so called exprience. OBAMA 08..

Texas4Obama   February 21st, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Senator Obama has a cold... and has not been feeling good since yesterday in Dallas. I think he did VERY well this evening considering he wasn't feeling well.

Obama '08

Ninos   February 21st, 2008 10:05 pm ET

For all you cynics, please. It was obviously very heartfelt.

Nauret   February 21st, 2008 10:05 pm ET

SHE DID GREAT!!!!!!!!
TEXAS AND OHIO GO FOR HER!!!!!
DO NOT LISTEN TO CNN . CNN IS FOR OBAMA.

pauline santos   February 21st, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Do you hear yourselves talking? This the first time you've pictured Obama in the role of commander-in-chief? Obama is now showing more confidence in the debates? So why have you been promoting Obama as a rock star, as a strong candidate? Because you want a rock star, not a commander-in-chief? You've always shown Hillary (your analysts) that she's the weaker candidate, when it is very obvious when she talks and speaks about policy that she is the stronger candidate. You are delusional!

Jim   February 21st, 2008 10:05 pm ET

"towards the end when Hillary said "whatever happens happens" it was a clear sign that she saw Barack as the nominee."

Yeah, she knows she has lost it already. I think she will drop out after March 4th.

Kristy   February 21st, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Troy, I couldn't agree more! She was talking about these poor soldiers who have lost limbs......in a war she SUPPORTED.

She came off as negative and petty throughout the entire debate. I don't think a minute or so of seemingly fake concern for the people is going to erase the rest of the night.

Robert   February 21st, 2008 10:05 pm ET

In every debate this guy rambles on and on and on about nothing. Where's the TIMER????

Kathy McBride   February 21st, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Bill,
I have heard you say that older white women are backing Hillary, well I am a WOW (WHITE OLDER WOMAN) and I am with Obama all the way to November now. Please don't be so sure about us WOW's
in TEXAS;

Carissa   February 21st, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Okay....so she may have never ACTUALLY shed tears, but, that "slight tremor in her voice..." is paramount to crying ~ come on, everyone knows you get that "slight tremor..." prior to actually shedding tears...like she said "Let's Get REAL!" (okay...maybe she didn't say w/an exclamation point, but you get it!).

lee   February 21st, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Hillary really cares about the United States and its people and anyone who says differently is in denial. Her closing was brilliant.

Abby   February 21st, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Hillary won the debate, as always! She knows her stuff, gives details, and her ideas just flows easily. Obama stuttered throughout the debate, and most of the time paraphrased Hillary's words.
Madam President Hillary Clinton!

M   February 21st, 2008 10:05 pm ET

she looked very presidential throughout, especially at the end! He did not. He looked the same way he has always looked – uncomfortable. This is not what the president of the united states' demeanor should be. Be smart fellow americans. Vote Hillary and be proud of your choice that you would have played a part in electing the first woman president of the united states, and a president we could all be proud of.

Juan Carlos(Vegas)   February 21st, 2008 10:05 pm ET

when you compare Obama and McCain, Obama looks weak. But if you compare Clinton and McCain ummm It would be an interesting race.

Buckeye   February 21st, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Great ending point, no matter who voted for or against the war, it's important to recognize the impact of war on vets and all military members and the only one who seems to care is Hillary.

Jim   February 21st, 2008 10:04 pm ET

Sen. Clinton's closing comments,"We will be fine..." was lifted from John Edwards! Isn't that plagiarism?

JAY   February 21st, 2008 10:04 pm ET

If Hillary is this weak of a debater, with lines like "change can be Xeroxed", not having good rebuttals and then tries to use graphic detail of the pain and suffering of others, how will she stand against other leaders, who may challenge her.

Obama, no matter what you think, stood strong in this debate (as in all of them), were able to attack with facts and issues and not go off the point, as well as stand strong in opposing all of the Clintons so far.

Even some of her solutions weren't solutions. She tried to attack his character, his policies, his record, his speaches and he withstood all of it. That's a President. That's a leader.

DMR   February 21st, 2008 10:04 pm ET

Obama is the one who has a chance. Hillary is old school and showed her lack of understnading for the issues that are facing Americas. I think if she is president, all of us should go learn Spanish as she clearly stated that ENGLISH should NOT be the required language in the USA. What is she thinking.

victor   February 21st, 2008 10:04 pm ET

great finish to a great debate/conversation. While Obama seemed strong and ready for attacks, Clinton stood above as the experienced canidate who knows what must be done. No more time for words. action and experience is the future of America not 1960's retoric. The American people knows we need change. The question is WHO has the experience to lead us to that bright future. Hillary Clinton is the one. Say it with me...." Madame President"!!

B. Smart   February 21st, 2008 10:04 pm ET

If one hears the powerful message of Obama, and still thinks he is an empty suit, then it is THEY that are truly empty.

OBAMA 08........

Willie McGill   February 21st, 2008 10:04 pm ET

Senator Clinton is the best candidate. I sincerely hope she continue with her quest to obtain the Democratic Nomination for President in 2008!

Pamela   February 21st, 2008 10:04 pm ET

Amazing! Hillary is definitely going to be alright! But if we do not make the right choice, it's going to be really tricky for the rest of us.

Recognize   February 21st, 2008 10:04 pm ET

She scored real big points when she cut off the latino moderator. Can't wait to see what the latinos think of that.

Al   February 21st, 2008 10:04 pm ET

Anyone who tries to spin this as anything other than a titanic failure for Hillary is just "delusional" as Obama would say.

Shuaib Meacham   February 21st, 2008 10:04 pm ET

It is amazing how the same people who have been attacking Obama for his eloquence are now falling all over themselves praising Clinton for hers.

Ana Lord   February 21st, 2008 10:04 pm ET

Her last comment was done to get simpathy from people. She knew that talking about our soldiers would create teary eyes in the audience.
She is a fake.

S. Holt   February 21st, 2008 10:04 pm ET

Thank God she didn't CRY. She tries to pull at your heart strings when she feels boxed in. No, this is not Presidential material, this is pulling out your 'lady-soft side' which she doesn't have one. She only plays this empathy card when she needs to, which is alot. Go Obama.

Rubi   February 21st, 2008 10:04 pm ET

It was the ONLY comment to get a standing O tonight – she was strong, poised and eloquent, as she always is. Amazing.

Jose   February 21st, 2008 10:04 pm ET

I had been swept up by Obama magic but I am RETHINKING This was the first time in the whole race a candididate focussed on my situation and made me feel someone maybe cared. Thank you Hillary!

Marina FL   February 21st, 2008 10:04 pm ET

I also got the impression that she was conceding! "No matter what happens..." She definitely ended on a strong note, but Obama won the debate.

Marie   February 21st, 2008 10:04 pm ET

I still don't like Hillary but she did great on her summation.

Anonymous   February 21st, 2008 10:04 pm ET

While I sympathize with the disabled veterans she referred to in her closing remarks. Reporters should point out that she is part of the cause of their suffering. Her vote abdicating congressional authority to Bush is the reason we are in the Iraqi quagmire.

RAF   February 21st, 2008 10:04 pm ET

Hillary did end the night on a strong note. However, as a veteran, I am saddened that she used the image of injured soldiers, who were injured in Iraq as a result of her vote to send them there, to score emotional points to improve what was otherwise a weak debate for her.
She should be ashamed of herself for using that image, and I am deeply saddened that the sacrifice of those soldiers is now being used for political gain by the candidate who voted to send them there in the first place.
Shame on her

Allison   February 21st, 2008 10:04 pm ET

Hillary you go, you could have not said it any better. You are so ready to be our President on day one. I support you 100 %

Go Hillary 08

Ann   February 21st, 2008 10:04 pm ET

Senator Obama keeps saying how he can cross the aisle. Why doesn't the press ever ask him for a specific example of how he's done that in the center. Hillary is presidential. Obama is his most confident when he is agreeing with Hillary's position. We don't need a yes man in the white house we need a can do lady. Hillary rocked tonight!

S   February 21st, 2008 10:04 pm ET

I agree with Mattew...incredibly presidential, real, extremely moving.
Keep fighting Hillary.......She has the record, the attitude, the actual plans, and the EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!! WAY TO GO HILLARY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Al   February 21st, 2008 10:04 pm ET

I like them both. But I don't want a president who will stand up and cry when times get tough. I want someone is ready to hash out problems and let people know this is a new day. You get a chance to do things right. I will give you a chance but if you do not follow through, USA will stand up and be counted.

Craig   February 21st, 2008 10:04 pm ET

I don't think that any woman has ever had to face the humiliation of an unfaithful spouse placed upon the national and world stage. I think that Senator Clinton displayed grace and courage at what was likely the worst time in her life. I am puzzled by my female friends who have stated that they dislike (or do not respect) Senator Clinton because she did not divorce her husband and state that they believe that she stayed in her marriage only for political gain. I for one admire Senator Clinton and know that she did the right thing because she understands human frailty and has the religious conviction to believe that love conquers all. I was not surprised when she stated that others have had to face greater adversity than she. She is a person of astonishing strength. I wish her only the best in the days ahead.

Teddy   February 21st, 2008 10:03 pm ET

Why are we not discussing the fact that she got "boo'd". The only person to get that response...

Dona   February 21st, 2008 10:03 pm ET

I am democrat first ,, I like Clinton's view. The latino's are people will emotions and clinton understands them more than Obama... She also cares about americans more than Obama ,, i feel ,, He is good man ,, lots of words ... It definetly takes lime to convert words to action , Hilary you just earned a Vote !!!

lb   February 21st, 2008 10:03 pm ET

Not to take anything away from the candidates, but the standing ovation was the signal of the end of the debate – it was not for the appreciation of the last statement. Watch again

jacob   February 21st, 2008 10:03 pm ET

hillary scored big at the end but obama scored big the entire debate! TEXAS FOR OBAMA! OBAMA 08'

Carmen   February 21st, 2008 10:03 pm ET

I am an Obama supporter, but I agree that Clinton gave a powerful closing. Very touching and worthy of the standing ovation.

However, I do think throughout the entire debate, Obama sounded more substantive and practical, and gave an overall stronger performance.

Lee, Charleston, SC   February 21st, 2008 10:03 pm ET

she's trying to play the NH card again...isn't she so sensitive & caring.
notice how she broke out in the big grin after she was done...not the expression that I would think of after talking about wounded veterans.

go to the "xerox for change" comment to see the real clinton.

Mohamed Aman   February 21st, 2008 10:03 pm ET

I think she really faked it, this was a fixed answer. that's why I think politics are 70% about media

Robert Scofield Columbus, Ohio   February 21st, 2008 10:03 pm ET

Barbara Atlanta, GA haven’t you already voted? It’s our turn to decide!

James , in ,Oregon   February 21st, 2008 10:03 pm ET

She knows she is done , she came across like she knows it's almost over.

Kyle   February 21st, 2008 10:03 pm ET

I definitely feel like that was her wave goodbye to the Presidential race. She has decided that she will not take Barack out and risk her legacy in the party and in the Senate to win. This last statement was "goodbye".

John Tilert   February 21st, 2008 10:03 pm ET

I agree with Matthew. Hillary Clinton's final response was eloquent, extremely moving, very human and I think, the most presidential of anything I'd heard all evening. It told me a lot about this lady. I think she hit the ball out of the park!

barbie   February 21st, 2008 10:03 pm ET

What standing ovation for Clinton????

It was the last question they shook hands, she said she was honored to be there with him, end of debate. That got a standing ovation not her response!

Stop spinning cnn!

The Truth   February 21st, 2008 10:03 pm ET

There was no standing ovation. People clapped at her joke about her own trials, however no one stood. Look at the video. During the rest of her response no one said anything, or clapped. Where do you get a standing ovation from?

G.J.   February 21st, 2008 10:03 pm ET

It's s shame this (important) debate was not carried on a major network. I don't get CNN nor Univision. Just seems like such an important event SHOULD be carried by ABC, NBC, or CBS.

mike   February 21st, 2008 10:03 pm ET

too much like the tears in NH – calculated and using our wounded vets

Think - FL   February 21st, 2008 10:03 pm ET

Wowwwwwwww… another NH moment. This one was more authentic seeming but still more of the same old pandering, love me please garbage. The attack ads backfired in Wisconsin so now it's back to emotional mode.

I honestly think Barack took this one… I'd say she won the last two, but he was more in command this round.

mndharmas   February 21st, 2008 10:03 pm ET

Leaders are Born not made. I don;t know who said that. but my grandfather used to quote me that . Hillary cannot become a leader. Obama is a leader

Carol Gust   February 21st, 2008 10:03 pm ET

Bill

The debate appeared unfair, in that Sen. Clinton answers were sometimes rushed//interupted by C. Brown and Sen Obama was aloowed much more time.

Like football the first half Sen. Clintor should answered first, the 2nd half Sen. Obama should answered first.

He usually agreed with Sen. Clintor and then dovetailed his answers and elaborated –he was allowed to plagarise again on Sen Clinton's answer. We again don't know if he has an original idea.

Jing Tam   February 21st, 2008 10:03 pm ET

Democrats are divided and hurt by this race... It's exactly like what Bus/FoxNews said " We are paying the price for freedom and democracy."
I guess being a repuliban would have a better time.

JC   February 21st, 2008 10:03 pm ET

'Xerox'? Come on, Hilary... Her reaction from the crowd seems as if she didn't expect the cheer.
Obama on the other hand, doesn't react differently from the crowd's cheers, because he believes in his own words before being re-confirmed by the audience.

Dave   February 21st, 2008 10:03 pm ET

you Idiots Name on thing that Hillary has ever done.. besides stand by her man!!! Go OBAMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MEA   February 21st, 2008 10:03 pm ET

Great words! That's how a President should be. Go Hillary!!!!

Shawn, Minneapolis, MN   February 21st, 2008 10:03 pm ET

It was a great response without actually answering the question. She took the opportunity to play to our heart strings, which is an example of why we need a different voice in Washington! Go Barack!

Donna Dowling   February 21st, 2008 10:03 pm ET

I do not think Clinton ended on a high note. To me it seemed fake and forced. It almost looked like she was going to try to force a tear, but thought better of it. Obama for President

zahava   February 21st, 2008 10:03 pm ET

she shows her eotions only when she is losing. this is not the real her, the real her is what we see day to day on the campaign. the debate is nt the real thing. Obama is positive, a leader who can make evrybody a part of the system.

Brian   February 21st, 2008 10:03 pm ET

I keep hearing Obama all talk no substance. What debate are you watching. Quit repeating what everybody else is saying that rhetoric is tired and makes no sense. He put several initiatives out on so many levels. He has both substance and style. You can actually have both believe it or not

They sounded like the agreed on every issue expect Healthcare. He needed to fold badly to stop his momentum and didn't do it. Great job by Obama

Calan DeWald   February 21st, 2008 10:03 pm ET

Hillary is easier to relate to. She really nailed it out of the park with her final response which was far from contrived. She just should have ended it with "I have always been proud to be an american". ...

haya   February 21st, 2008 10:03 pm ET

Hillary is awesome and she is the only candidate fit to be our President!!!! HILLARY ALL THE WAY!!!!

Jim   February 21st, 2008 10:03 pm ET

Too little, too late Mrs. Clinton!

Darrah   February 21st, 2008 10:03 pm ET

I do not feel Hillary separated herself enough from Obama tonight. Obama just won Texas.

Andrew   February 21st, 2008 10:03 pm ET

it was a cry for help
she knows her campaign is dying and know that her "crying" before new hampshire helped her so why not try it again and force the party to be split a bit longer

hillary give up you are no match our country needs a uniter

CAC   February 21st, 2008 10:03 pm ET

The reason why she got a standing ovation is because she was conceding!

Boz   February 21st, 2008 10:03 pm ET

Hilarious, especially the comments. The last gasps of the Clinton campaign, trying to talk about how great she did. She was incredibly petty and small-minded the entire night.

The ovation was for both of them, btw.

sally   February 21st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

CNN needs to moderate better. Obama got 2/3 airtime. It is obvious who the MSM wants. I wish people would stick it to these media folks and choose Hillary just to see the MSM poop in their pants.

Canuck   February 21st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Clinton cares about the American people.
A true leader at heart, Hillary for President!

Blacks for Hillary   February 21st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Well done, Madame President!

You were awesome!!!!

Julie   February 21st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Hillary may have scored a point for a good closing – but Obama moves people everytime he speaks!

And, Obama is genuine, the real deal... Hillary is a part of the political machine and with her in the White House – it's just more of what our nation has put up with for the past 20 years!!!

America needs change! YES WE CAN!

DBo   February 21st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Considering Obama has won 11 in a row (let's not forget Democrats Abroad), I found it unsettling, and frankly insulting, that Hillary was given the last word. What's up with that???

Marlene, CLT   February 21st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

The problem with HRC is, you never can tell when she is actually being genuine. To most people, everything she says sounds phony, calculated, and contrived. The more earnestness she tries to project, the more she puts people off. She is not a leader and will never be President. I almost felt sorry for her there at the end. Don't go away mad Hillary . . . just go away.

T   February 21st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Wow I cant believe Schneider actually had something good to say about Hillary Clinton! He's one of those delusionals Obama mentioned. Go Hillary she really nailed the debate!

wifeofabubblehead   February 21st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

I was amazed at how well she did. She got standing "O" That is good. No matter who you want to win this election she did great.

Cyril   February 21st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Ms. clinton seem to be touched by our brave wounded soldiers. IT WAS GUILT and NOT CONCERN. WE SENT THEM THERE!!!!!

Jimmie   February 21st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

The FALSE PROPHET can't be a woman

NG_in_Big_D   February 21st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Dave Edmunds – what's the point in voting in the primaries if the 800 superdelegates make the ultimate decision?

Robert in ABQ – There was a standing ovation because the debate was over, not necessarily because of Hillary's ultimate remark.

Independent   February 21st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Funny how when Obama makes a nice speech its all rhetoric and nothing-but when Hillary totally avoids the question and basically loathes in rhetoric it gets a standing O and it totally sincere and true???

Give me a break. I cant stand the double standards here. Obama killed her on issues, and thats what matters

gugu   February 21st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

i think Obama won. no records is better than bad records.

Teresa   February 21st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

If Obama is lucky enough to get to debate Hillary a few more times he may learn enough to make all of his policies and plans exactly like hers. It reminds me of the time Bush was copying all of the Democrats plans eight years ago!

James West   February 21st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

HILLARY IS THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not Given   February 21st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Oh the world has picked on HRC and don't we feel sorry for her. If she was a strong woman, she would of thrown the bum out. I know if I did what Bill did, I would be walking funny for the rest of my life

Connie in Houston   February 21st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

I hope she wins Texas. It seems close in polling my peers. Personally, I thought her closing words were phenomenal! She is awesome.

Kim   February 21st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

She should have answered the actual question.

Dallas   February 21st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Cmon... A standing ovation decides who should be president? Our national security depends on other nations help moreso than preventing attacks on the ground. The American Dream is the reason people love america. Obama encapsulates the American Dream and shows the world that America is the place where dreams come true and where the impossible is possible. Spare me this Hillary garbage. She represents not the american dream but the american establishment which is not seen in any good light now or in the past.

Linda   February 21st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Played right into her hand-she needs to connect with all those wronged women, since she cant connect with anyone else. Then play that sympathy card for our vets, and how blessed we all are. How very touching. Now, if she only meant it beyond March 4th.

KamikazeSauce   February 21st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Although her closing statement was indeed very moving and eloquent in nature, I, personally, don't think it made up for her earlier outburst over the accusation of plagarism by Obama. However, other people may think otherwise.

I think it will be really close.

It's interesting to watch the faces of the candidates change (or not change, in Obama's case) as they are attacking each other.

Carissa   February 21st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Yes, Hillary's best response was to the final question ~ EVERYONE knows she's obviously been through quite a bit, which she is fully trying to play up. However, I don't care what she's been through...unless she's lived some portion of her life experiencing this nation as a true minority, she would realize that Barack could so easily have used that type of argument well before now. The difference is he doesn't want to use that argument b/c it's what "others" expect him to use & coming from her, those "others" don't view it the same.

I must say, though, her realization/appreciation of the type of man/candidate she's running against is a long time coming!

Good luck to whomever gets the Democratic nomination ~ either one of them would DEFINITELY be better than the Bush era, & either one could accomplish great things for this country & its people.

brent   February 21st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Great finish. she is prepared to win or lose but is taking the high road either way. It should be about unifying in the end against the republicans.

Steevo   February 21st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Quite a closing statement Hillary!!!

James   February 21st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

If you want a president you can rely on look at their past accomplishments "Hillary's the girl"!!!!!!!!

A.B. eryan   February 21st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

I felt that Obama was the dominant in this debate.

Clinton appeared in a weak position especially when she used plagiarism as a confrontation point. She should've concentrated on the point that Obama is likely to need time adjusting as a president longer and that change would come not as soon as promised.

So she should've insisted on the importance of experience

Kevin - Jonesboro, GA   February 21st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

While Hillary had a strong final comment, I believe the standing ovation was intended for both candidates as a final salute.

mary   February 21st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Hillary did a great job. I am still Obama's fan but Hillary`s speech brought tears to my eyes. Good job Hillary. You are certainly a strong woman.

Deats   February 21st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

One more time. NAFTA and Superhighway special interest project. The media dropped the ball again. Stayed away from "sensitive" topics that require a candidate to take a specific position.

Garrett   February 21st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Are you sure the standing O was for her response? Funny how it happened as the debate was ending. Every major event I've ever been to, speeches, lectures, performances always end with a standing ovation. Do people just like the last song or sentence the best?

RONALD   February 21st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Her closing comment sounds as if she is willing to bow out gracefully and open the door to a "Obama-Clinton" ticket.

B. Smart   February 21st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

She seemed to be preparing herself for conceeding. Obama is just
a more powerful candidate.

Heather   February 21st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Fantastic finale – if she can take the energy she showed here into the next primaries she will win.
Here's hoping she wins Texas, despite CNN doing their level best to promote Obama, I'm shocked by their lack of impartiality tonight.

Anyone with a knowledge of politics could see that she won the debate tonight and that he was chasing more than he was leading. He is on show and no substance unlike his opponent, she has the style, the substance, the experience and the know-how and she will be the next President.

Clinton 2008

jankit   February 21st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Hillary was playing with people emotions similar to NH.

SMK   February 21st, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Obama is an empty suit – an infomercial with no substance. All we hear are empty words of hope – change – dreams..... he even wants the American people to help him. That doesn't sound like a "take charge" type of President that can do the job and make decisions from day one.

Mirror   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

She scored real big points when she cut off the latino moderator. Can't wait to see what the latinos think of that.

Trish   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

She ended on a great note, but I am still undecided.

Grace Needed   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

That closing comment was a side of Senator Clinton we have rarely seen. She absolutely showed an authentic self. Yet, even as I write this, I'm thinking is that a result of having her old strategist Maggie back? Since I read all the blogs that said how she might be able to turn things around and someone noted that this was the ploy of Maggie, to STOP the attacks that were, obviously, not working and speak from the heart of why you are doing this. She did and it was very moving, almost inspirational (like she denigrates in Senator Obama.

Chris and Josh   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

BRAVO HILLARY!

With that closing argument, you just won our votes.

mndharmas   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

Please!!!!!
She has made it official. she is running away from her disatorous marriage and picked american health care and senatorship to overcome her suffering.

hillary 08:   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

BEAUTIFUL ending Hillary!

GO HILLARY   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

that was such a genuine comment from hillary and just reinforced why i love her so much

Marla   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

This is the real Hillary, the one who has devoted her life to helping others
(and sometimes you have to be in a power of position to do that). Most of all it is not about her, it is about what motivates her....gettings things done
for the benefit of us all!

Debbie   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

Xerox...I loved it!!

CarolA   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

She didn't have to cry, I nearly did. That last comment was eloquent and I thought, from the heart. She may have finally showed who she really is. Unfortunately, I am a John McCain supporter.

Tashima   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

HILLARY JUST NAILED IT WITH THE CLOSING REMARK.

THE CLOSING REMARK WAS THE BEST I HAVE HEARD IN YEARS.

OBAMA STUMBLED WITH THE QUESTION AND HIS ANSWERS WERE NOT PRECISE.

THIS IS WHERE OBAMA'S INEXPERIENCE COMES INTO PLAY.

JustinA   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

I also thought her closing remarks sounded like she's ready to concede the election.

Mike   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

She's probably watching CNN since the same 'grand ending' statement has been made a few days ago by a political analyst. Funny who's talking about not using other peoples' words...

lgm   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

It got a standing ovation because it sounded like she was conceding. She was humbled to be sitting next to our future president.

Robert Scofield Columbus, Ohio   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

WOW, I actually cried a little on that one myself!

TJ in MN   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

Hillary had an effective last answer, but something that happened during the debate should make up everyone's mind. I received an e-mail from her campaign urging me to check out her new website (delegate hub) to get her fantasy spin on the delegate race. She even says that the nominee needs 2208 delegates because of the MI and FL delegates. How can anyone think she is genuine because of one response based on her husband's cheating? She is scheming to sneak delegates in–that's the real Hillary, unfortunately (I say unfortunately because I do think that she cares about issues, but is just playing the political machine game).

Kenneth H.   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

A strong note of obviousness. The American people have it tougher than the former first lady, turned senator, turned Presidential campaigner? Oh? Sincerely, Hillary?

I had no idea of that.

Her true colors rest not in that, but in her attack on Barack Obama. Her plagiarism push and character attack on Obama was really terrible to watch on live television.

Politics you can believe in, right?

mildred   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

I do believe that HRC's last comment that received the standing ovation was NOT for her, per say, BUT for our brave men and women and their families.

j   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

Standing O from the same audience that booed her earlier? That's unbelievable. You don't think the standing o occurred because the debate concluded? That's laughable!

elgin   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

HILARY PRIDE

Keith P. CA   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

sounds as if she was begging to be on the vice presidental ticket ! Cry me a river.

MARIA 2325   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

HILLARY , GOD IS WITH YOU ,LATIN PEOPLE WILL GIVE THE NOMINATION , GO HILLARY !!!!

K.   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

Her closing rocked! It is one of the few times she has connected with the crowd. Nice damage control making nice with Obama to lessen the gaffe of the "Xeroed" comment.

John   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

Hilliary sound like an attorney giving a closing agrument knowing that she was about to lose.

Andrea   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

Funny the debated ended there!

Kimberly in Texas   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

Hopefully she bows out as gracefully as she delivered her last lines....

Obama 08!

CC   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

Obama has been behind over 800 pieces of legislation. Tell me that isn't experience, and then take a look at the few pieces that Hillary has been behind. People need to do research before they start saying that Obama does not have experience.

Angelina   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

I do not buy it, I think she knows that almost crying and being nice will get her some votes...................

Brandon   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

she didn't even answer the question that was asked. she tried to pull the big emotional card on this one and say "oh i've had it hard, but those war veterans with missing limbs have sure had it harder" i thought she looked a little desperate in trying to gain the support of everyone.

Nancy   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

Hillary Clinton hit it out of the ball park....what an ending, what a speech, what a standing ovation....

HILLARY IS THE COMMANDER IN CHIEF!!!

Poli   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

Hillary will have a chance to be an average American soon. After all, she's workin' the night shift!

My wife and I are voting for Obama tomorrow in early voting and Texas....

carrie   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

That was one of the most beautiful moment in politics! Very moving, Congrats Hillary, we support you!

RM   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

The audience stood because they knew it was the end of the debate. It wasnt about that answer. I thought her little soliloquay was a little forced, actually.

Troy   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

I dont see why that was such a great ending point... she talked about soldiers who had suffered so much from the war that SHE VOTED FOR

Michael Farrah   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

She is simply an actor but can never win an Oscar!

Barbara Atlanta, GA   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

He did great the entire debate.. one answer is not going to do it for me.. she is trying but it is not working for me.. she is just calculated politician.. we need change.. he is honest, and I belive him.. . i am still undecided but... after tonight debate. i think i am going with Obama..

Mary   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

She is the only "presidential" candidate running as far as I'm concerned. And that final statement was the capstone to prove it.

Also, I'm so sick of the media and average citizens saying that Hillary has cried. She never cried! Her voice showed emotion with a slight tremor in her voice. This really irks me as a woman. It is pure sexism and that's a topic that's been left out of the media during this primary.

Jing Tam   February 21st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

I wonder how much racial and gender are influencing this race.
Majority of African American voted for Obama. Majority of Latino voted for Clinton. Supprising big portion of white middle male are voting for Obama ( Maybe they feel it's a male dominated world ).
All-in-All, Edward should have a chance if he got more campain funding.
There's no doubt that Democratic party is divided by this race. Obama machine is larger and more effetive than Clinton machine. I don't like obama's campain call names like "Clinton machine" and "Same old politician".

Laurinda, AZ   February 21st, 2008 10:00 pm ET

Superdelagates, hmmm...
Obama has given them approximately $700,000 more than Hillary. It's not hard to guess which way they will probably go.
The thing is, you can't have it both ways, you can't claim you won't be bought by others and buy others too. What goes around comes around, Obama is trouble, we just don't know what kind yet....

HI   February 21st, 2008 10:00 pm ET

Good for her- the debate was pretty much even until that comment. She clinched the debate at the closing.

Van in Austin   February 21st, 2008 10:00 pm ET

Just like the tears! Another "act". She deserves an academy award!

Roz, IL   February 21st, 2008 10:00 pm ET

GO OBAMA08

Markus Haueter   February 21st, 2008 10:00 pm ET

towards the end when Hillary said "whatever happens happens" it was a clear sign that she saw Barack as the nominee.

Jayhawker   February 21st, 2008 10:00 pm ET

Hillary's closing comments were her highlights of this debate...she just said that what she said to make her self feel better and also make up for her xerox comment...becuase after she said it she knew she should not have

JC   February 21st, 2008 10:00 pm ET

Go Hillary!!!

Laura   February 21st, 2008 10:00 pm ET

Hillary IS Presidential, there's not a scenario that we might go thorough after Bush leaves office that SHE hasn't worked out for US.

elgin   February 21st, 2008 10:00 pm ET

SHE ROCKED THE CITY OF AUSTIN

joe   February 21st, 2008 10:00 pm ET

Obama may have been strong in some areas but he was not strong throughout the entire debate. Neither was Hillary but I believe she was stronger throughout the entire debate, and proves she has the knowledge to be the next President.

Andrea   February 21st, 2008 10:00 pm ET

I think the standing ovation should be to both

Thank God for her parting words anyway, as she would be a sitting duck. As she lost miserably!

jarred   February 21st, 2008 10:00 pm ET

HILLARY WINS AGAIN!!!!!!!

NotanObamaFan   February 21st, 2008 10:00 pm ET

Get a grip Hillary fans....that standing ovation was for both of the candidates, not her....geesh!

Politically Speaking   February 21st, 2008 10:00 pm ET

I think the audience actually were gving a standing ovation more so because it was the close of the debate...lol. I honestly believe some thought it was that time to stand and clap.

Regardless....good response from Clinton.

Obama '08

John McClown   February 21st, 2008 10:00 pm ET

I think Hillary was at the end acknowledging the fact that she knows she won't win.

It's too bad she marred the night with cheap and nasty attacks. I think she's hurt her legacy when she returns to the Senate or perhaps retires to enjoy her millions.

Theresa   February 21st, 2008 10:00 pm ET

I think Sen. Clinton's answers were solid, full of substance, and clearly about the American people. If I hear Sen. Obama start one more response with " I agree with Sen. Clinton" then talk his retoric, I will fall asleep. I think he stuttered through any answer he actually had to think about. Her final response to the final question swelled my heart, especially since I am the spouse of a soldier.

Jim Wagner   February 21st, 2008 10:00 pm ET

I am so proud of Hillary, yes she is human and does have feelings, and she will be alright whoever wins (and doesn't wind up indicted) she is rich, has a bright daughter who obviously loves her, and a great career.

He on the other hand will never get my Democratic vote.

I don't get it   February 21st, 2008 10:00 pm ET

What struck me most when Hillary was getting the standing ovation, Obama instead of acknowledging it, kept mouthing something like "is it time for a break", kept trying to get up and move away.

Margie Miller   February 21st, 2008 10:00 pm ET

Hillary Clinton really scored here. Barack used this opportunity to talk about learning the lesson of taking personal responsibility for his actions and decisions in his youth.

Hillary..on the other hand...showed real political courage and sensitivity to others in her final answer. She could have used that opportunity to draw sympathy to herself but chose instead to take the high road.

carmen   February 21st, 2008 10:00 pm ET

Well, she is a better actress. But watch out!

Evan Tribley Columbus, OH   February 21st, 2008 10:00 pm ET

She deflected the question like she had so many more.

The real thing you can take out of it is what she said. While she campaigns she talk about how he isn't ready, he doesn't have the stuff, etc. and then she says in the debate WHOEVER wins we will be fine.

She says one things while campaigning and another while debating.

HillarySkeptic   February 21st, 2008 10:00 pm ET

Though Obama has little record to stand behind ,it seems Clinton has too MUCH record. She's been desensitized to the average Joe.Obama has not been corrupted yet.A country that craves style like America could never be happy with A president Like hillary

ready   February 21st, 2008 10:00 pm ET

Future president, go Hillary

Robert   February 21st, 2008 10:00 pm ET

I like what she had to say, but let's be honest, the standing ovation was for both of them – it was the end of the debate. When a great event ends, you stand and clap, she just helped that normal effect along in a very eloquent way.

Benjamin   February 21st, 2008 10:00 pm ET

I was thinking the standing-o was for the close of the debate...not just for Hillary...

Luke   February 21st, 2008 10:00 pm ET

CNN DONT LIE! She did not receive a standing ovation – it was the END of the debate!

Adam Z.   February 21st, 2008 10:00 pm ET

I don't believe the standing ovation was due so much to what she said as it was from seeing both of the candidates shake hands and agree they had a mutual respect for one another.

VA   February 21st, 2008 10:00 pm ET

GIVE ME A BREAK....ANYONE THAT WENT THROUGH WHAT BILL DID TO HER HAS ALL THE COMEBACK ANSWERS..YOU CAN BET ON IT.......I AM A DEMOCRAT AND SHE HAS HAD YEARS TO PERFECT THEM........ BUT IF SHE IS LUCKY AND GETS THE NOMINEEE..I AM VOTING REPUBLICAN!!!!!!

Dr. Anthony Malzan   February 21st, 2008 9:59 pm ET

Senator Obama made a colossal mistake (colossal taking into account the position he is aspiring to) by claming (right in his first intervention) that US exported many jobs to China because of NAFTA .
Interestingly, nobody from the distinguished CNN political team asked him to elaborate on how the North American Free Trade Agreement can be a cause of exporting jobs to China.
Who was more amateurish here?

Zion   February 21st, 2008 9:59 pm ET

Could the audience have been standing because the debate was OVER.... Hiliary showed her true colors when she threw her trantrum over the healthcare question and behaved rudely concerning foreign affairs.

Bob, Greeneville, Tennessee   February 21st, 2008 9:59 pm ET

When you listen to Hillary's next speech count the "you knows". It is her way of trying to connect with us common folk. (It doesn't work Mrs Clinton.)

elgin   February 21st, 2008 9:59 pm ET

Hilary was the bomb!!!!!!!

yours truly   February 21st, 2008 9:59 pm ET

lets stick to the facts

christine   February 21st, 2008 9:59 pm ET

it sounded like she just accepted the fact that her campaign is not going anywhere and she wanted to end it on a good note, and with dignity.

About the standing ovation, its not entirely because of what hillary said, the audience stood because that was the last question and she gave the last answer and the debate was over. The standing ovation was for the good debate, not for her.

Cee Dubya   February 21st, 2008 9:59 pm ET

Why do the pundits keep saying Hillary has to "come back?" Many candidates have been further behind in the delegate count at this point in history than her.

Obama didn't do anything but, stutter and baffle me by talking in circles trying to rephrase everything she said.

Look at his plans for extended social programs.. he has ides for how to fund these programs. Guess what "young and intelligent?" You'll be paying for his social programs for many, many years to come.

elaine   February 21st, 2008 9:59 pm ET

It’s easy to just listen to your opponents ideas and then respond, as Obama did all night – I would like to see him have to speak an opinion or idea of his own first and let her respond. I don't think he would he come across half as well if he really had to think for himself.

Andrew   February 21st, 2008 9:59 pm ET

Whoa. That end was killer and it is what people will remember.

It felt very real and true. Her problem has been she's been all about the issues and hasn't shown much personality. But she nailed. That was killer.

A lot of people cried after seeing that.

kitty lacrosse   February 21st, 2008 9:59 pm ET

Obama's campaign is about him...a cult of personality. Hillary's campaign actually makes the effort to recognize the people she'll be working for. Who knows if its entirely believable?...but at least she makes the effort to go through the motions. He's so busy being self-satisfied he's losing sight of what (and who) he's supposed to be working for. Nice closing Hillary. You've got my vote.

d   February 21st, 2008 9:59 pm ET

Great job Hilliary.

Unemployed Citizen   February 21st, 2008 9:59 pm ET

The future President of the United States ended the debate with a standing ovation.

Wow!

Kevin Zelko   February 21st, 2008 9:59 pm ET

Your comment is awaiting moderation.
How can you say that McCain would beat Obama? Look at the current polls. Obama wins hands down on all polls. Clinton loses on most polls. Now we don't like polls do we???

Well use some common sense. Obama will unify indendents, Repubs and Demos. Clinton will alienate all Repubs, some independents and maybe a couple demos. She brings baggage to the table and Repubs hate her.

Obama will pull over more repubs that are alienated from McCains lack of support from the Christian Right.

Obama has it hands down against McCain.

John Knudsen   February 21st, 2008 9:59 pm ET

Sorry all, but I think the standing ovation was, by and large, for both of them.

Heather   February 21st, 2008 9:59 pm ET

One line in one debate should NOT sway someone's decision for goodness sake. Get real folks.

Miguel Braga   February 21st, 2008 9:59 pm ET

To make Hillary's final statement her best moment of the night is truly killing her chances, I found it rather a banal moment.

Kevin   February 21st, 2008 9:59 pm ET

Clinton's last statement seemed a little too hollow and forced. It seems that these emotion things she talks of only matter most to her when her campaign isn't going well...

I'm just glad Clinton didn't cry again. Who wants a president that cries when things get tuff?

Eric   February 21st, 2008 9:59 pm ET

She ended strong, but her ideas are wrong. And the voters will validate Obama, as they've continued to do for 11 contests in a row.

Hopeful   February 21st, 2008 9:59 pm ET

I thought she seemed like she was making a concession when she said, "No matter what happens we will be fine". As if she was saying I will support this candidate WHEN he gets the nod.

WP   February 21st, 2008 9:59 pm ET

She was sincere and very dignified. I'm glad she got a standing ovation, the answer deserved it.

I still think Obama will make the best decisions instinctively and won't be bogged down by lobbyists and the "game" of politics.

But it was nice to see Hillary and him being fair to each other.

Anita   February 21st, 2008 9:59 pm ET

Hillary clearly won the debate. Obama seems to echo her points and there is a clear difference in their health care policy. Hillary speaks to the people who need the help. Her performance was wonderful. She is ready to be president.

Louisei in CA   February 21st, 2008 9:59 pm ET

While Obama has rhetoric, Clinton's been through the down and dirty. She knows how the game is played in Washington. She knows that the deck is stacked, and she has the experience and the intelligence to deal with the reality of the presidency.

mndharmas   February 21st, 2008 9:59 pm ET

Her personal tragedy as a woman do not make her presidential. Does America have to pay for her bad judgment.

Chris   February 21st, 2008 9:59 pm ET

Just because Hilary can make a good closing statement like a skilled lawyer does not make her a good leader for the country.

DJ   February 21st, 2008 9:59 pm ET

Hillary talked results, Obama talked Ideas. Hillary is the best! I like Obama ....... however, I love Hillary!

Hillary for President!!!

Niko Z.   February 21st, 2008 9:59 pm ET

She seems condescending in all her responses this one especially.

aleman1219   February 21st, 2008 9:59 pm ET

the crying worked for her before… for a moment thought she was gonna do it again..

Angela   February 21st, 2008 9:59 pm ET

When you get the chance, read both Sen. Obama's and Sen. Clinton's books (Dreams from my Father and It Takes A Village..). You'll see a huge difference between the candidates. Sen. Clinton writes like people say Sen. Obama speaks and vice versa. I was a Republican before, now I'm voting democratic for the primary, and, if Obama wins the nomination, I'll vote democratic in the general election.

park more, New Orleans   February 21st, 2008 9:59 pm ET

She was excellent. The CNN best political team should change. Why CNN political team is against Hillary.......What a jalousie....you are not real

She will win

Ricardo, San Antonio   February 21st, 2008 9:59 pm ET

what an amazing closing for Sen Clinton.... I like both but today I saw who is really ready and has the solutions for all of us....her name is Hillary Clinton.

JohnS   February 21st, 2008 9:59 pm ET

Yes, Hillary eneded on an another "crying" or rather teary note. When is this baby-stuff going to end?

Staci   February 21st, 2008 9:59 pm ET

Texas, you know what you have to do!

kathleen, illinois   February 21st, 2008 9:58 pm ET

You know, I am not voting for Hillary, but I believe
that she was elequent when answering that question.

Obama 2008

Liz, Carbondale, IL   February 21st, 2008 9:58 pm ET

I thought that the audience was just standing to indicate that the debate was over. Audiences usually stand up when an event ends, particularly a widely televised one such as this. I didn't really find this moment to be that significant. Each person's respective enthusiasts will probably think his/her candidate was the winner. Obama looked very presidential.

Haden   February 21st, 2008 9:58 pm ET

I hope Hillary doesn't win the nomination. Republicans will come out in drove to vote against her. Most democrats I know think she is a perfect example of the current Democratic legislature which has been eager to succumb to the whims of the Republican Party on Iraq, the Environment (drilling in Alaska, Endangered Species), and just about everything else. Obama may not be any better, but I know what I am getting with Hillary. With Obama, I can at least hope he will be better.

Emily   February 21st, 2008 9:58 pm ET

Did she cry, I thought I saw a tear?? That was all she needed to do to seal her votes in Texas. Perfect ending, choking up and showing her "soft" side. I didn't buy it. Not a word. She is a driven woman, dangerous stuff. She is also being driven by a husband that is even more ambitious. I cannot feel sorry for her. They deserve eachother. They are not genuine people. They a political hacks and I feel it is dangerous to have these folks leading our country and the world.

Hal   February 21st, 2008 9:58 pm ET

David Gergen "I dont think she stoped his momentum tonight" CNN "She stumbled at one moment, especially on health care. David Gergen former advisor to the Clintons. CNN

Obama clearly won this and she was not able to attack and stop him, instead was booed for clearly using plaigerizing as a tool.

Donavon   February 21st, 2008 9:58 pm ET

lol, that last speech sounded like she conceded

neightbor   February 21st, 2008 9:58 pm ET

She saved the best to the last, though I am a obama supporter

Lee   February 21st, 2008 9:58 pm ET

Absolutely incredible ending by Hillary. She showed true humility and a true understanding of what Americans have faced in the past 7 years. She truly understand America. She will be a leader we KNOW will work for our best interest.

She ROCKED – she is a fighter and will fight for universal health care – she is couragous and will not let the American people down.

Vote for Hillary! Latinos unite for the good of America.

Isabella, California   February 21st, 2008 9:58 pm ET

"standing ovation. She just won Texas", I really doubt it.

C. J.   February 21st, 2008 9:58 pm ET

I just can't get Obama. His speaches are, indeed, insprirational, but he continues to display very little substance. To me, he might be a viable candidate in six or eight years. We need someone with a little more gravitas - and that's Hillary. The ideal ticket? Hillary/Obama. I think that might be a winning combination.

Staci   February 21st, 2008 9:58 pm ET

She just won Texas with that closing. Obama go home!

John, TX   February 21st, 2008 9:58 pm ET

Sounded as if Clinton was conceding at the end. She knows that her time is up.

DeniseGA   February 21st, 2008 9:58 pm ET

The standing ovation was for the end of the debate. Hello were you paying attention!

teresa mason   February 21st, 2008 9:58 pm ET

Hillary will be the next president of the USA

maria h.   February 21st, 2008 9:58 pm ET

I totally agree that Senator Clinton was much more Presidential during the entire debate- as per her usual. Her closing remarks about being personally tested nearly brought me to tears- and if people don't vote for her after tonight- I just don't know what they can be thinking.

andrea   February 21st, 2008 9:58 pm ET

she's best when she fights back - c'mon girl - stop sitting back

Allison R.   February 21st, 2008 9:58 pm ET

It appeared to me as though the standing ovation was to mark the end of the debate, not Clinton's response.
And her deliberately vague answer seemed to be a theme to questions she didn't want to answer. Is it just me or does she really like to avoid?

RONALD   February 21st, 2008 9:58 pm ET

Her close was strong, but if you score a touchdown in the closing seconds of a game and the other team is up 35 points, does it matter?

Trudy   February 21st, 2008 9:58 pm ET

Hillary represent EXPERIENCE and that what we need following the mess made my the Republican President Bush.

Bobbie, Tx   February 21st, 2008 9:58 pm ET

You go Girl! What an awesome closing statement. A standing ovation...enough said!

Troubleshooter   February 21st, 2008 9:58 pm ET

Sounds like Hillarys last comment was a final farewell. As it should be She is not ready to lead. Obama is truly a Commander and Chief.

Looks like a wrap for Hillary. Lets move the country behind the next President Barack Obama.

Baracks Momentum is too great.

John McCain – Not this time either friend.

Felicia   February 21st, 2008 9:58 pm ET

Not a standing ovation!! It was the END of the debate!

Richard F   February 21st, 2008 9:58 pm ET

Why did Obama get to talk so much longer? And why was almost every question asked to Clinton first? Everyone knows it is best to go second as you can piggyback off the other answer or respond directly to it. Every other debate has switched off till this clearly biased CNN one. I like both candidates but CNN (and Schnieder) certainly like Obama more.

tony   February 21st, 2008 9:58 pm ET

Obama showed tonight that he can be a strong president and one that can have good jugement

Laura Johnson   February 21st, 2008 9:58 pm ET

Obama absolutely crushed her during most of the debate. The standing ovation was because it was the END of the debate. They also gave a standing ovation halfway through.

Nice try, Clinton spinmasters. Clinton got smacked and she knows she's toast.

Monday   February 21st, 2008 9:58 pm ET

I'm a Obama supporter 100% BUT she nailed the final answer.

Debbie   February 21st, 2008 9:58 pm ET

Hillary is a strong lady. People should give her some credit. She loves this country only wants what is best for all of us. Please look at Hillary as a person. The media do not have anything positive to say about Hillary. Obama is not a god. Let's hear some balanced coverage for a change. The media is helping Obama win. Give us a break. Hillary fight to the end.

michael alvarez   February 21st, 2008 9:58 pm ET

seems many missed the true meaning of the standing ovation, the audience clearly thought the debate, correctly i might add, that the debate was over and it was recognition for both candidates.

Feminist for change   February 21st, 2008 9:58 pm ET

Obama was awesome! McCain would crush Hillary by double digits. Go Obama!

Staci   February 21st, 2008 9:57 pm ET

She rocked this contest. Texas, vote for the right person for the job. Don't be fooled by vague promises. I still didn't hear HOW he is going to deliver on any of his promises. He just talks about the pie-in-the-sky results. OFFER SOLUTIONS, not just criticisms!

Justin   February 21st, 2008 9:57 pm ET

I have a problem with her ending on a "high note" while talking about recovering soldiers that went to war in Iraq, in which she supported it. Am I the only that didn't see that she was using the end results of her supportive actions to levy voters?

Melissa   February 21st, 2008 9:57 pm ET

This is the Hillary that we need to see! I will work very hard to get her votes from West Virginia!! Great, I loved it!

ben   February 21st, 2008 9:57 pm ET

It gets a big reaction when someone who otherwise seems calculating and cold opens herself up. but it's like the Iraq surge... a small success that doesn't change whether or not the original proposition is good. Clinton is a better candidate than McCain, but Obama is BEST.

Kelley C   February 21st, 2008 9:57 pm ET

It was the only point where she actually won. She used the EXACT SAME LINE that she did when she cried in New Hampshire. Of course it sounds sincere – she did have a major trial and note that they don't even live together – but it was the only moment of sincerity.

Edwin Portland   February 21st, 2008 9:57 pm ET

Suffering through your husband's infidelity was your most trying moment? You shake you head in wonderment at yourself? WOW.

Janet   February 21st, 2008 9:57 pm ET

Does Obama not understand what a debate is all about. He's always saying why are we taking about differences instead of bringing the country together. WELL, it's a debate, you are suppose to debate about differences so we can see who is best to be the next president. I think he is too sensitive.

Hmmmm   February 21st, 2008 9:57 pm ET

Yeah, I wonder where we have heard much of that "eloquent response" before. Oh, wait, Bill Clinton 1992.

Interesting..   February 21st, 2008 9:57 pm ET

She just conceded people.. That's why she wouldn't touch the superdelegate question..

Jill   February 21st, 2008 9:57 pm ET

Hillary Clinton reached over, shook Obama's hand, and conceded defeat.

Tonight, Barack Obama became the next Democratic nominee and the next President of the United States of America.

Hui   February 21st, 2008 9:57 pm ET

I think the last comment that she is honoured etc, almost like she is admitting she is losing the over all.

AJ   February 21st, 2008 9:57 pm ET

This debate did nothing for Hillary. She needed Obama to make a big mistake to get her back in the race somewhat and not only did Obama not make any mistakes but she made a big one by going negative and getting booed. People are tired of that stuff. Obama truly held his own on every level tonight.

Anonymous   February 21st, 2008 9:57 pm ET

' Xerox ' was a day dream word for her to say

jp/michigan   February 21st, 2008 9:57 pm ET

Hillary is presidential material. Obama is an empty suit filled with platitudes, no substance or achievements.

denniepaschich   February 21st, 2008 9:57 pm ET

Her answer was more valedictory than victorious. I think she realizes that she is loosing. The American people do not feel sorry for her because her husband is a cad. They are ashamed of her for sticking witb him and then attempting to use his behavior to catapult her to the presidency.

Evelyn New Jersey   February 21st, 2008 9:57 pm ET

Hillary was strong on the closing statement. Where as obama went way off the subject. Hillary got the standing Ovation. These young people have no clue what they are voting for none of them know what his changes are going to be they are just following the crowds.

Murry   February 21st, 2008 9:57 pm ET

This was Obama's best night. He kept his cool.
Hillary kept forceably coming back to healthcare and made a bad joke about Xeroxing. That last moment was too Hallmark moment for me. We don't need a crying president that calls for people's sympathy.

Tyler in Raleigh   February 21st, 2008 9:57 pm ET

I am glad she didnt cry!

Really though, she has not shown that she has developed from her "experience". The only time she finds her voice and changes her tune is when the polls say she needs to.

She needed to do something, and she does. What a way to have a president.

Anonymous   February 21st, 2008 9:57 pm ET

Go Hilary!

mikey   February 21st, 2008 9:57 pm ET

If it wasn't for Bill's BJ while in office, Hillary wouldn't have had a closing remark. How can Obama compete with that?

Kristine   February 21st, 2008 9:57 pm ET

It felt like a goodbye speech. I'm glad to see she finally took the high road... out.

Lynda   February 21st, 2008 9:57 pm ET

You can't just be strong at the end of a debate. You have to be regal and string for the ENTIRE debate – Obama did this. This shows his ability to lead under pressure.

Dr Roy Creasey   February 21st, 2008 9:57 pm ET

Obama started weak, but picked up. Hillary finished strong – very strong. I'd have to give it to Hillary.

Rosie   February 21st, 2008 9:57 pm ET

It is nice that Senator Clinton sees the struggle of the Americans around her. But it still falls weak when we all know she voted to send thousands of Americans & Allied troups, as well as 100's of thousands of Iraqs to their deaths. It bothers me that she did not see the struggle that this war has placed on nation, and the many families and communities that will never be the same because of it.

PaaaaLease   February 21st, 2008 9:57 pm ET

The standing ovation after Hillary's near tear jerk answer to her hardships was a standing ovation for the end of the debate.

She is done.

crews2me   February 21st, 2008 9:57 pm ET

Obama was strong all night and shows he can be commander and chief. She gave a nice ending story but that doesn't help with how she came off negative in this debate.

JT Dallas TX   February 21st, 2008 9:57 pm ET

Did you not see the fear in OB???

Come on OBidiots!

JohnS   February 21st, 2008 9:56 pm ET

This great debater– Hillary– does not get a knock out again? Obama is still standing– What happened? I remain disappointed in Hillary.

Christina   February 21st, 2008 9:56 pm ET

Standing ovation.

Enough said

Texas is hers.

bryen   February 21st, 2008 9:56 pm ET

Obama seemed visibly upset that he blew it in the closing statement. When given the opportunity, he tooted his own horn. When given the opportunity, Clinton said, DUH! I've been in crises, but its nothing compared to what Americans are going through. She made it about the American people.

Kudos to Hillary!

Hillary 08!

Dave   February 21st, 2008 9:56 pm ET

the people were standing because it was the end of the debate.

Tommi   February 21st, 2008 9:56 pm ET

YES YES YES She ended on her strength. Yes she showed she is a Commander. Yes he showed he is her follower

James Russell   February 21st, 2008 9:56 pm ET

I thought Hillary's conciliatory closing statements were very gracious – making it clear that even though her defeat at this point seems almost inevitable, she will still support the Democratic party.

matthew   February 21st, 2008 9:56 pm ET

we need change in Washington!!!!Obama gives us hope and leadership for that change

DJK...NEW YORK CITY,NY   February 21st, 2008 9:56 pm ET

JUST BEAUTIFUL...that was such an incredible statement. She proved that she is as inspiring as he is..

it made me tear up

Mark   February 21st, 2008 9:56 pm ET

Good concession speech Hillary! Obama won hands down!!!

Hal   February 21st, 2008 9:56 pm ET

Obama clearly won this one. They thought she will be able to exploit differences, however Obama brought a great stand. Hillary was not able to really try to stop him here. Obama clearly won this.

Marty Jonas   February 21st, 2008 9:56 pm ET

Hillary Clinton demonstrated her ability to lead. She has the knowledge and experience to deal with world leaders and national politics. She is seasoned and confident. Barrack Obama is likeable but lacks substance.

well   February 21st, 2008 9:56 pm ET

She knows how to act...that she cares less on whatever will happen!!! She fools herself.

STOP THE ACT!! NEXT TIME CRY ALOUD.....

MIWatch   February 21st, 2008 9:56 pm ET

About listening to the people that Sen. Obama said. If he truely believe listening to people why did he pullout his name from the Michigan primary ballot? He say something he doesn't mean.... again talker do doer.

Laura Johnson   February 21st, 2008 9:56 pm ET

They weren't giving a standing ovation to her answer, dumb clown, they were giving a standing ovation to BOTH debaters for having a good debate. Ridiculous how biased the media is in favor of the Clintons!!!

p montoya   February 21st, 2008 9:56 pm ET

I believe that the standing ovation was for both candidates.

Brian   February 21st, 2008 9:56 pm ET

No, Obama has Texas and Ohio. They see past Hillary for who she is. Just look at Baracks website and you'll find the issues... the substance, its been there for months. Clinton even has used some of it to modify her plan to appeal to the things the voters will be talking about. She's a tactical snake, but we see her for who she is. Obama will have Ohio, Texas, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island. She won't take her hint and try to buy her way to the convention. You owe me a dollar if I'm right.

J.N.   February 21st, 2008 9:56 pm ET

The debate was over, the standing ovation was for THE debate, not for Hillary.

Melissa   February 21st, 2008 9:56 pm ET

This is the Hillary that we need to see! I will work very hard to get her votes from West Virginia!! Great, I loved it!

Sheldon Carter   February 21st, 2008 9:56 pm ET

Please people, stop with the she finished on a strong note crap. The people at the debate rose to their feet ONLY because the debate was over, not because of her comments. Sorry to burst the bubbles of all the pundits.

Patrick   February 21st, 2008 9:56 pm ET

It sounded almost like a concession to me, like she was having a lightbulb moment and realizing that it isn't her time.

dee   February 21st, 2008 9:56 pm ET

Hillary rocked!!!

Debbie from Ft Lauderdale   February 21st, 2008 9:56 pm ET

I think they would make a dynamite team. Would it work?

Staci   February 21st, 2008 9:56 pm ET

Hell, yeah she did!

Tempered   February 21st, 2008 9:56 pm ET

She definitely "won" the final question - and maybe saved her Texas campaign in the process??

The real question is: will they and their supporters really be able to stand *united* behind whichever candidate ultimately gets the nomination? That is my concern. Her answer to this question (genuine or not, I don't know) went a long way to making me feel for that first time in a long time that we may have a reunited Democratic party in the fall.

Let's hope all the Clinton and Obama supporters can pull together in the end.

Mom of 4   February 21st, 2008 9:56 pm ET

Is Schneider wearing a Clinton campaign button? Give me a break, and concede a Clinton defeat here also.

teferet   February 21st, 2008 9:55 pm ET

Moving speech? Those were just words, and words don't matter. It was her goodbye speech to the American people. Very Evita.

Annabell   February 21st, 2008 9:55 pm ET

it was really strange how she kept debating about healthcare through out the entire debate and its like at the end she tells you something else. she is doing the SAME EXACT THING that bush did. to have more of what the voters and people think and have their word in it. but has that happend? no. how do we believe that she won't? she is in this campaign and keeps enforcing that she has more experience but its mostly her HUSBAND'S experience, not hers. obama has a totally different outlook and he believes in an idea that would change everything bush did because he is NOT repeating what bush said.

Willie   February 21st, 2008 9:55 pm ET

Clinton was awesome!!! That closing statement almost made me cry. That was beautiful!!!

Powell   February 21st, 2008 9:55 pm ET

i thoughtshe was gonna cry again.

was the standing o for her.... or for the debate in general?

ME   February 21st, 2008 9:55 pm ET

When Obama was asked name your most critical/difficult moment – he had nothing – his whole life??? What is that about? Again, no substance. He can't name on moment where he stood up against all odds for what he believed in and made a stand? I can't believe it – where has he been? What has he experienced? Nothing!

Yet Hillary – has met challenges – plenty!!! Who do you want running this country! She got the substance!!! GO HILLARY!!! You GO GIRL!

Alissa   February 21st, 2008 9:55 pm ET

i couldn't tell if it was a standing ovation because of her answer or because the debate was over and they were giving the ovation to both candidates. it looked strongly like the latter.

Dustin, NC   February 21st, 2008 9:55 pm ET

I don't believe that the standing ovation was for Clinton's remarks per se. It was the end of the debate, everyone was fired up, and she landed a good hit. However, I think the standing ovation was more for the debate as a whole, shared by both senators.

Avis C, Richton Park,IL   February 21st, 2008 9:55 pm ET

The sad thing is it was at the end. Hellooooo she tanked on the rest of the debate! And she wanted to do this again in Wisconsin? Why? Seems she didn't say anything different.

Pantsuit Lady   February 21st, 2008 9:55 pm ET

I hope that was her concession speech, because I'm tired of Charlie Brown's mother... wah wah wah blah blah blah blah

S.A.   February 21st, 2008 9:55 pm ET

Hillary knows Obama is connecting to America better. I appreciate her positive closing and acknowlegement of Obama. Hillary let American know she will be just fine.

Sunny Young   February 21st, 2008 9:55 pm ET

I think she has done a wonderful job as a woman in a man's world. When clinton becomes emotional, people will probably be saying she such a girl. when she is a strong woman, nobody likes her. You go girl!!

GL   February 21st, 2008 9:55 pm ET

Obama never attacked her, she attacked him, and he had many opportunities to attack and did not. My god, he is a different type of politician. He probably will bring a new type of politics to Washington.

R. Fogle Houston, TX   February 21st, 2008 9:55 pm ET

I thought her ending line was hokey and pre-planned. She didn't do anything in the debate to set her above Obama and to overcome his momentum.

Lisa in Houston, Tx   February 21st, 2008 9:55 pm ET

Way to go Hill. Experience not empty rhetoric. Change, Change, Change...Senator Obama keep your change, I want the whole dollar. Hillary '08.

Selina   February 21st, 2008 9:55 pm ET

her last comment showed she knows her campaign is running down into the ground-the picture of the limping soilders-oh please Clinton, don't get so pessimistic!

Janel, St. Paul, MN   February 21st, 2008 9:55 pm ET

It was clever of Senator Clinton to end on that emotional note.

However, it didn't change the patronizing way she looked at Senator Obama, nor did she directly answer most of the questions.

I think the "standing ovation" was for both of them. They are strong candidates. . .but in my view Barack won the debate all the way.

Jeff, Rathdrum ID   February 21st, 2008 9:55 pm ET

Not to take anything away from Clinton but I think the standing ovation was because the debate was over, so the standing ovation was for both canidates.
Like I said it was a good answer.

Kelly Anne   February 21st, 2008 9:55 pm ET

Shrillery was so nasty and negative. She seems mean.

No wonder she is losing.

Obama looked presidential and mature, in contrast to petulant Hillary.

Eric Keller, Detroit, Michigan   February 21st, 2008 9:55 pm ET

She ended with a standing ovation, and she deserves it. Everyone should give her a round of applause. Bye Hillary, Bye.

C. J.   February 21st, 2008 9:55 pm ET

Hill's last answer really showed her character and the reason she's running. At first, I thought it sounded a little too concessional - like she knows her campaign is lost - but with that very end comment, I think she humanized the entire campagin and perhaps just kept the fires burning.

Michael from Dallas, TX   February 21st, 2008 9:55 pm ET

The standing ovation wasn't for Hillary. They were standing up for both of the candidates because that was the last comment of the night.

Janice   February 21st, 2008 9:55 pm ET

Hillary is also an eloquent speaker; however, her major problem is that no matter if she is sincere or not.....with her extremely strong desire for power (that began when her husband was the president), she is doomed because most .....MOST ....Americans do not believe her sincerity.

Robert   February 21st, 2008 9:55 pm ET

She's it and we need her.

Jon Cruz   February 21st, 2008 9:55 pm ET

This was the only answer that got a standing ovation. I am impressed that you finally decided to pay Senator Clinton a compliment, but I think we shouldn't hedge it. She got the only standing ovation of the night.

Dude   February 21st, 2008 9:55 pm ET

what has Hillary done as senator from NY? Not a thing. She is an empty suit.

anna   February 21st, 2008 9:54 pm ET

it sounded like she knows this is it for her

YES!   February 21st, 2008 9:54 pm ET

Clinton trumped Obama on healthcare, economy, and immigration. The only area she didn't do as well was Iraq war, but she clearly has a more organized plan to get our troops out of Iraq than Obama. She scored better, but he IS a good talker.

scuttle   February 21st, 2008 9:54 pm ET

yeah. Hillary gets her 15 seconds in the spotlight. She is clearly in her element in these debates, but they are nonetheless getting very boring. We know what their positions are. Obama is right not to consent to (yawn) a debate every week for the next several weeks.

Hillary's closing   February 21st, 2008 9:54 pm ET

That was a beautiful comment, and if it were how she answered more questions, or lived her political life, I might actually support her.

Donna   February 21st, 2008 9:54 pm ET

If she cried it would have been all over

DMAC   February 21st, 2008 9:54 pm ET

I support Obama, but HRC nailed the ending.

John, CO   February 21st, 2008 9:54 pm ET

It was a great answer.

But if Hillary wins this nomination, McCain will win the election. The woman's got more negatives than a high school algebra book.

Christian, Tampa FL   February 21st, 2008 9:54 pm ET

Though I am a rabid Obama supporter... I have to say that Hillary's closing statement was incredible.

I was very touched when she said she was honored to be there with Barack, and then he reached out and shook her hand.

Sonya   February 21st, 2008 9:54 pm ET

Her ending was eloquent...too bad it was a lie. Clinton claims that she sat there watching the wounded warriors walk down the red carpet at the opening at the Center for the Intrepid. She is lying. I was at the opening for the Center for the Intrepid and witnessed Hillary Clinton and her entourage pull up 15 minutes late, well after the wounded soldiers had been seated and the ceremony had begun. It was rude and showed how little she cared for the audience that day.

gairy   February 21st, 2008 9:54 pm ET

PERFECT–SHE IS AWESOME-AMERICA HAS THE CHANCE TO SELECT A PRESIDENT WHO IS CONVERSANT ON THE ISSUES--GO HILLARY-

Heather C. Melbourne FL   February 21st, 2008 9:54 pm ET

I almost had to get out the tissues with her final response- she wasn't answering the question, she was going for an Oscar.

Dennis Flannery   February 21st, 2008 9:54 pm ET

She didn't answer the question! So, when was she most tested. Come to think of it, niether did he.

MIWatch   February 21st, 2008 9:54 pm ET

I doubt about Sen. Obama's anti-war stand, when he said he will send troop to Pakistan ruthlessly! Being Senator he can oppose war, but after become President he will send the troop ruthlessly without negotiation/diplomatic action?? Which is his stand?

Osho   February 21st, 2008 9:54 pm ET

Hillary cried 3 times in 5 weeks. Looks like a weak presidential candidate.

MN Woman   February 21st, 2008 9:54 pm ET

She absolutely deserved that standing ovation, it came straight from her heart and beliefs. Obama was still writing and that finger was coming up to make some point and the ovation was spontaneous for her comments.

Go Hillary, this is why we need you.

Catherine   February 21st, 2008 9:54 pm ET

Go Hillary!!!!! She is the winner.

Kelly   February 21st, 2008 9:54 pm ET

It was the best moment of the night for Hillary. She needs more of those or she will be gone after March 4th. Two incredibly strong candidates and the party to lead this country into success and prosperity in the future.

I don't support Mrs. Clinton but that final moment of the night was well spoken and displayed her real person side.

Great debate, Ramos did a good job!

david   February 21st, 2008 9:54 pm ET

THE CROWD GAVE A STANDING -O NOT FOR CLINTON,BUT BECAUSE IT WAS A GREAT DEBATE AND ITS OVER.YOU'S LOVE HILLARY SO MUCH YOUR TO DUMBFOUNDED TO NOTICE.IDIOTS!!!

David   February 21st, 2008 9:54 pm ET

Did she answer the question? No again she does not give direct answers. She did not describe the moment in her life when she was tested the most.

Damien   February 21st, 2008 9:54 pm ET

This was Hillary's best ending in her candidacy.

Michael Godin   February 21st, 2008 9:54 pm ET

She still can't control Bill, she will be able to control our country??

larry   February 21st, 2008 9:54 pm ET

I AGREE WITH YOU 100% BILL.I ONLY HOPE SHE CAN BEAT OBAMA..HES GOOD AN IM COMFY WITH EITHER ONE BUT I DO THINK ITS VERY HARD TO PICK JUST ONE..ITS SAD THERE SOME WHAT DIFFERENT.IF YA REALLY WANT CHANGE!! THEN WHO EVER IS PRESIDENT (HOPEFULLY DEMOCRATES) IF ITS OBAMA THEN HAVE A VP AS A REPUBLICAN...THATS REAL CHANGE

Elena   February 21st, 2008 9:54 pm ET

YEAH HILLARY!

RC from VA   February 21st, 2008 9:54 pm ET

If she can keep comin accross like that OB will be out. Notice though how OB like the remarks were – no substance just hopeful.

anne-marie   February 21st, 2008 9:54 pm ET

that was amazing! I hope she wins. but unfortunatly there are too many people who hate her, which will go against her.

Thomas   February 21st, 2008 9:54 pm ET

I'm in tears! Hillary did a wonderful job!

Mary C.   February 21st, 2008 9:54 pm ET

What a great job she did! And she's right, and I believe this came from her heart.

jd   February 21st, 2008 9:54 pm ET

She remains in my mind as a thoughtful, well-spoken woman. I wish the media has so done her wrong.

me   February 21st, 2008 9:54 pm ET

Very powerful!!

Mike Ackerman   February 21st, 2008 9:54 pm ET

They don't have many differences, so why is he beating her so easily lately? Well for one I wish the press would talk about likeability – that what it comes down to and he wins easily!

Tara   February 21st, 2008 9:54 pm ET

Hats off to Hillary!!

Amy in Iowa   February 21st, 2008 9:54 pm ET

Her closing made me comfortable about voting for Obama. To know Hillary will be okay when she is not nominated helped my decision about Obama.

It is true, the Clintons will be okay and they served the country well during their time. It is now time to turn the page and elect Barack Obama. Thanks Hillary for your confirmation and closing.

Hal   February 21st, 2008 9:54 pm ET

They dont really have that major difference. Her last answer was the most effective the entire speach. Obama kept consistent and did not change his stand. Why did Clinton make plaigerizm into an issue, its silly politics.

She even gut booed for that.

I think she needs to really sit down and try not to accuse people of xeroxing. Its wrong clearly, however Obama really kicked it.

matthew   February 21st, 2008 9:54 pm ET

give me a break. She is not to be believed

danny   February 21st, 2008 9:53 pm ET

Yup. This was no doubt her best moment. It certainly is good to end a debate impressively, but over the entire course of the debate: YAWN.

R. Koehler   February 21st, 2008 9:53 pm ET

The standing ovation was for her. Senator Clinton hit more than one homerun tonight. She is clearly the stronger candidate next to Obama and McCain.

Madame President you have my vote.

Powell   February 21st, 2008 9:53 pm ET

pander pander pander ........

David M. Lucas, Ph.D.   February 21st, 2008 9:53 pm ET

Yes, Bill, but she sounded like she was going to vote for Obama...she said "We're going to be ok after all of this." Wild.

Curtis S   February 21st, 2008 9:53 pm ET

I thought she was about to start the "Crying Game" again. Obama has improved drastically but Hillary also put on a good showing especially the last comments. I'm just glad she didn't start crying again.

Lez   February 21st, 2008 9:53 pm ET

Looks like a scene right out of movie. Come people please listen to what is really being said. Nothing!!!

Mattheus Mei   February 21st, 2008 9:53 pm ET

It's her repeat New Hampshire Tear moment - fake!

hillaryis44   February 21st, 2008 9:53 pm ET

She had a nice response to that last question. But I am not going to vote for her because she looks human when responding to a question about her husband's infidelity. Too much on the other side of the scale.

Chris   February 21st, 2008 9:53 pm ET

She did a good job on that one but it had a sorrowful tone. She needed to bring it across but still look like a winner or presidential. As far as Obama is concerned, I'm just glad he did not talk about his messy desk this time. He learned from that.

Emmanuel Winner   February 21st, 2008 9:53 pm ET

Clinton edns strong, but Obama's call on the decency and generosity of the American people will live with us.

Luke   February 21st, 2008 9:53 pm ET

Yes, Yes-Good,Good. One of two needless hurdles completed until Obama wins this nomination. She's old news and a winer.

Bright Clayton   February 21st, 2008 9:53 pm ET

Campbell Brown was biased as she has always been on the CNN show in her questioning of Clinton.

Sylvia   February 21st, 2008 9:53 pm ET

amen

sam3dogs (Steve )   February 21st, 2008 9:53 pm ET

Bill. did you see the look on Obama's face when the debate ended?

Michael   February 21st, 2008 9:53 pm ET

How jarring is it when Hillary Clinton actually acts like a human being? I saw it coming when she brought back the New Hampshire question.

GetAClue   February 21st, 2008 9:53 pm ET

like I said before riding on uncle bills coattails......

Nathaniel, Alpharetta, GA   February 21st, 2008 9:52 pm ET

This is why Hillary should be our President! Obama is an empty suit. All talk with no record to stand behind.

Bob G.   February 21st, 2008 9:52 pm ET

One of the few answers to get a standing O?? It was the only one – She is the REAL DEAL

Sherry   February 21st, 2008 9:52 pm ET

That's my future President, You rocked HIllary!!!

Jo Lena   February 21st, 2008 9:52 pm ET

I agree. I have to give it to her – great last words – and Thank God she didn't CRY!!!

Yosef   February 21st, 2008 9:52 pm ET

Take that for speech eloquency.

Robert in Albuquerque   February 21st, 2008 9:52 pm ET

standing ovation.. She just won texas.

Dixie Dawg   February 21st, 2008 9:52 pm ET

She scored big with that one.

karin   February 21st, 2008 9:52 pm ET

it was like she was conceding. i think that is what got to people.

Dan in Miami   February 21st, 2008 9:52 pm ET

Do I have to be a Bush or a Clinton to be President of the U.S.A?

Let me know, I can change my name.

matthew   February 21st, 2008 9:52 pm ET

That was an AMAZING closing from Hillary Clinton.

Incredibly moving, incredibly real, incredibly Presidential.

Dave Edmunds   February 21st, 2008 9:52 pm ET

On the superdelegate question . . .

Superdelegates are supposed to vote in the best interests of those they represent. . . not vote HOW those people voted months ago.

Does everyone who cast a vote in Iowa for Hillary STILL support her? After hearing Barack Obama speak more and more since New Hampshire, do those voters all hold the same opinion of him?

Superdelegates need to use their judgement as to who is the best choice and offer those they represent their best judgement. . . if superdelegates are simply supposed to vote for the winner of their state, no matter how many months ago that election was held, what candidates dropped out, what new information on a candidate has come to light, what's their purpose or function.

Superdelegates who are using the, "I have to vote like my constituents did," argument have another agenda. We know why many will be switching to Obama. Unfortunately, this shows how racism goes both ways.

Kevin Zelko   February 21st, 2008 9:51 pm ET

OBAMA was strong the entire debate!

TheLeftNut   February 21st, 2008 9:51 pm ET

I like them both. HINT HINT

Nick   February 21st, 2008 9:51 pm ET

Ironically, Senator Clinton ends the debate the the strongest piece of rhetoric of the night. Strong enough, probably not, but Democrats are looking for inspiration, and instead of attacking Senator Obama for that it would be, and perhaps was, most effective.
