Secretary of State Rice spoke with reporters Friday.
Secretary of State Rice spoke with reporters Friday.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, sandwiched between two major overseas trips, made a rare appearance at the State Department’s press briefing room Friday and talked politics. She told the packed room of reporters that she has no interest in running for Vice President on the 2008 Republican ticket. Instead, she says, her next stop will be California.

“I have always said that the one thing that I have not seen myself doing is running for elected office in the United States,” Rice said. “I didn’t even run for high-school President, Rice joked, “It’s not in my genes.”

Rice added that there are “very good people running for the American people to make their choices. I will be making my choice as a voter and that's going to be fun after a campaign in 2000 in which I was extremely involved.” Rice says she is not involved at all in this campaign. It’s a demanding period for her at the State Department, dealing with North Korea, Iran, Iraq, Russia, Serbia, and Rice doesn’t have much time left to make her mark.

She insisted that she’s going to stick with her job until the very end of her term: “I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing as Secretary of State to see if we can use the last few months, as the President has put it, to sprint to the finish.”

Of course not. But how awesome would it be for the Republicans? Not only is she a woman, but she is African American as well. They would lose the image of the party of the old, white, and rich men…

Jake, ATL   February 22nd, 2008 6:37 pm ET

It's unfortunate she's been demonized. It's all the Republicans to blame. Everyone involved with this administration will forever have a bad name.

Willy   February 22nd, 2008 6:37 pm ET

Dr. Rice ,you would make a great president. However you are not a democrat and therefore you'd be judged by the party you are in and not by your intelligents.

iGoog   February 22nd, 2008 6:40 pm ET

You got to be kidding me. Republics are good at one thing destroying America.

Linda Porter   February 22nd, 2008 6:40 pm ET

I am glad running for office is not in Secretary Rice's genes. If it was, she would be very disappointed because I don't know anyone who thinks she has any credibility.

Grif   February 22nd, 2008 6:41 pm ET

Why not? She know how to negociate, and get the right responsejust about every time. You have to learn to talk to the world. One thing Obama can't do..

PG   February 22nd, 2008 6:44 pm ET

If not Codoleezza Rice, then McCain should choose Colin Powell as his VP.

joanna   February 22nd, 2008 6:45 pm ET

Good for her!

Casey   February 22nd, 2008 6:45 pm ET

Too bad. She's a contender.

Tim, Boston MA   February 22nd, 2008 6:46 pm ET

Your next stop will be a federal penetentiary, LOL.

Not Given   February 22nd, 2008 6:47 pm ET

Rice has nothing to really brag about and would just tie McCain to Bush thus cementing the bond that will cost him the election

Tom Wittmann   February 22nd, 2008 6:50 pm ET

Possibly Sen. Mc.Cain will try to convince her

Tthis is a woman people can vote for her (own) merits as a knowledgeable, valuable and decent person, not only because she is a woman.

Tom

California Independent   February 22nd, 2008 6:50 pm ET

I'm looking forward to seeing who his running mate options are. Any info on this?

AC   February 22nd, 2008 6:50 pm ET

That's a shame. She could bring this country together and be a tremendous leader. She's a woman who already has the world's respect.

Leeza   February 22nd, 2008 6:52 pm ET

I'm glad its not in your genes! I'm tired of you!

aware   February 22nd, 2008 6:54 pm ET

Everyone says that Condi until they are seriously considered. To continue the legacy of your dear friend W, I think you would do it. I also think that you would be be an extraordinary VP and possible future president. :)

Vadim Levin   February 22nd, 2008 6:57 pm ET

Too bad.
she deserve to be not only Vice-President, but President of USA. She has more experience than some other candidates.

TheLeftNut   February 22nd, 2008 7:04 pm ET

Oh good. We want the NYT to impune your dignity too!

Rozanne   February 22nd, 2008 7:04 pm ET

I would not support a McCain/Rice ticket to the White House. While she is obviously well educated and composed. Connie is a ice princess and we are having a hard enough time dealing with Hillary's ice chips. Secondly, I would not vote for a woman who has not ever been married nor had any children…how could she relate to what I've been through?

Meh   February 22nd, 2008 7:05 pm ET

ha ha ha . Yeah right. She'll run if she's asked.

Paul from Kissimmee   February 22nd, 2008 7:06 pm ET

I wish Rice would run for President or VP. She is a tough, intellegent woman that I admire very much.

Tom Swift   February 22nd, 2008 7:07 pm ET

McCain/Rice '08

Bill Jay   February 22nd, 2008 7:07 pm ET

Don't run for public office, look what the men are doing to Hillary.
To many men (actually bigs babies) are scared of a women in high public office. love you Ms. Rice.

Raymond Ito   February 22nd, 2008 7:08 pm ET

Even if it's in her "genes" to run, I don't think she'll get any vote and any candidate that makes the mistake to choose her to be a Vice-president, he or she will have to forever live in regret till the end of time. Reason? She'll be an albatross around anyone's neck - period.

Bernice   February 22nd, 2008 7:10 pm ET

LET RICE GO ON ABOUT HER BUSINESS, SHE HASN'T DONE MUCH FOR US ANYWAY!

WE'RE READY TO GET RID OF HER AND HER BOSS AS WELL AS THE REST THAT GOES ALONG WITH THEM
THE WHOLE SUS-POOP OF THEM!

Darth Vadik, CA   February 22nd, 2008 7:13 pm ET

Of course not, you're a thief not a politician.

Brian   February 22nd, 2008 7:15 pm ET

It was foolish to hope for her to run anyways. A Bush insider/McCain ticket? Say goodnight.

Ian   February 22nd, 2008 7:18 pm ET

Thank god.

Jen   February 22nd, 2008 7:18 pm ET

If you want a woman for president, Condi is a REAL woman.

Too bad she won't run.

RICARDO PHILLIPS OF D.C   February 22nd, 2008 7:22 pm ET

WOULD IT BE IN THE BEST INTEREST TO KEEP RICE AS THE SECRETARY OF STATE? OR PERHAPS EVEN HRC

Patrick Peavy Plano,TX   February 22nd, 2008 7:24 pm ET

That's actually kind of a shame. I was actually afraid she would run this time around and be a huge challenge for my girl Hillary. When it was clear she wasn't going to get in the race I was hoping she would run one day. I guess I must have a lot of respect for strong female leaders in positions that may not be as popular as they would like at a given time. Regardless of how you agree with her role in the Bush administration or the mismanagement of the war in Iraq(notice I said mismanagement and not the war) I think she is worth considering as a candidate but I guess she just doesn't want to. Then again, Hillary never quite said yes either…. I guess we should "stay tuned" because I don't think her time in the political spotlight is over.

Charlotte   February 22nd, 2008 7:24 pm ET

Want to bet she voting for Obama.

Cal Jim 2   February 22nd, 2008 7:28 pm ET

To bad she won't run. The nation could benifit from her experience. I believe that she would help the republican ticket.

Aunt Rice we dont need you.

Derek, Jersey Shore   February 22nd, 2008 7:34 pm ET

President Bush has made too many mistakes to list but one of his biggest was replacing an independent thinking secretary of state that raised the important questions and was willing to be honest with Condi who cared more about keeping her job and being in the loop than she did about doing her job well.

The truth is that she couldn't run for office because she has been a disaster since she began as W's NSA.

Gorbashov, Long Beach, Ca.   February 22nd, 2008 7:39 pm ET

She's even less qualified to be VP then she is to be Secretary of State.

How does this women still have a job with the disastrous foreign policy that we have had the last seven plus years?

How incompetent do you have to be to actually be held accountable and put out to pasture in this Adm.?

Stanley, ME   February 22nd, 2008 7:42 pm ET

Good. Maybe she can be the new director of Bush's library.

Anonymous   February 22nd, 2008 7:48 pm ET

Her run is in her Feragamos.

John in Virginia   February 22nd, 2008 7:49 pm ET

Good. Please don't change your mind Condi. This country has had enough of you and the politics that you have helped to fester over the past 7 years.

kevin   February 22nd, 2008 7:56 pm ET

Thank you…..don't run for any office…you have not been a great diplomat, nor communicator., peace broker etc. I am not blaming you…only your boss.

Tim Burgess - in CA   February 22nd, 2008 8:05 pm ET

Darn - she'd make a great VP, and a truly ground breaking President. It would be nice to have one of the brightest people in this country in that office, instead of our last couple of knuckleheads.

Media Balance   February 22nd, 2008 8:06 pm ET

A very polite way to say "Are you kidding me ? I am not that stupid !"

Linda   February 22nd, 2008 8:13 pm ET

I would vote for Condoleeza Rice in a second. Just love her!!

Alan   February 22nd, 2008 8:24 pm ET

Good for you. It's a dirty, dirty world anyways. Look at what they are trying to do to McCain. And this week, talk radio is after the Obamas. Stay away from this really bad people. What a shame, the talented who can help this country are turned away and the mediocre rule. No wonder things are going south

DevilsAdvocate   February 22nd, 2008 8:30 pm ET

I'd vote for McCain/Rice, only if Sen. Clinton is not the nominee, before I'd vote for Obama/Edwards populist socialism!!

Now that's a Lady Who I Would Vote For   February 22nd, 2008 8:30 pm ET

Wow…I hope we do get to see her run for office one of these days. She is amazing!

Anonymous   February 22nd, 2008 8:32 pm ET

Is there any way she could be drafted? She has the world's respect already… the only ones who don't like her are the inclusive democrats.

thrice   February 22nd, 2008 8:33 pm ET

Rice is a fantastic government official, and seems like a very straightforward and sincere person. I don't see her tolerating the ethical compromises and backroom games that are the lifeblood of politics. Hopefully she will be able to serve our country again in the future. Delegate to UN? Future return as SOS? We shall see.

Belle   February 22nd, 2008 8:46 pm ET

Have you ever noticed that a person becoming President looks very young and energetic, but when leaving the office, looks very old?

I am glad Ms. Rice is going to go do whatever she wants…she most likely needs a break. Mr. Bush controlled EVERYTHING…even the news storiess…his legacy will be one of the worst presidents the country has ever known.

Condi may change her mind in four years, but I would imagine that is how long it will take to recover from serving the country.

I am a Democrat, but appreciate the time involved in the job. Good luck and warmest wishes!

Cindy   February 22nd, 2008 8:48 pm ET

Like HRC… Rice is a very smart, very competent woman.. but tied up with the wrong bunch of guys.

I think she should run. I think she could be a contender. But it's a personal decision.

ha   February 22nd, 2008 8:52 pm ET

Of course she wouldn't run for office; that would make her subject to public opinion rather than oblivious to it.

kathleen, illinois   February 22nd, 2008 9:02 pm ET

OH, pleeeeeze. no!

Marie   February 22nd, 2008 9:04 pm ET

No. Sorry. Anybody that closely aligned to the Bush/Cheney regime needs to be permanently barred from holding public office ever again. You're all suspect if not downright complicit in their crimes.

Kate   February 22nd, 2008 9:06 pm ET

This is THE woman I'd vote for … given the circumstances she's done a fantastic job .. very cool and consistent.

Jdona   February 22nd, 2008 9:07 pm ET

After watching the crucifixion of another intelligent, highly educated, articulate, decent woman who is running for President, I don't blame Condoleeza Rice for not running for elected office.

Ralph   February 22nd, 2008 9:07 pm ET

I've never understood how people see her as a great president.

She's never done anything but follow others.

U.S. Army Vet.   February 22nd, 2008 9:22 pm ET

If Sen. John McCain wants to have a real fighting chance of winning in the general election then he should not choose Codoleezza Rice, Colin Powell, or anyone who has been apart of the Bush cabinet.

The state of our economy, the Iraq War, and a multitude of other problems would be directly transferred to Sen. John McCain's campaign. This would only increase his negatives, and give democrats a stronger rallying call to attack the "failed Republican agenda".

Cable King Pittsburgh PA   February 22nd, 2008 9:33 pm ET

Rice has been a totally inept public servant. She is one of the major architects of America's global fall from grace. Maybe, one of her followers could enlighten the rest of us as to some of her accomplishments-wanting to be commissioner of the NFL doesn't count!

On a political level she couldn't stand up to Ralph Nader - he does (or did) at least stand for something.

Jose Card - Independent   February 22nd, 2008 9:42 pm ET

If Dr. Condoleeza Rice will run for president in 2008, she will compete with her own merit without a former president to lean on.

I think she wants to return to teach at Stanford after the administration.
She has my full respect for her decision and appreciation for her public service to our nation.

Ms T.   February 22nd, 2008 9:57 pm ET

great. Don't run because you would never get my vote. You don't have a clue.

kevin from alaska   February 22nd, 2008 10:05 pm ET

She knew there were no WMDs and she lied to us.

Vig   February 22nd, 2008 10:09 pm ET

Thank God.

Pat M Canada   February 22nd, 2008 10:34 pm ET

Are Americans this desperate that they would consider Condi if she actually decided to run?????

Maybe she could be Nader's Vice ! (That is a Joke of course)

Good Lord……Can it get any worse????

mike   February 22nd, 2008 10:36 pm ET

She's been one of the biggest liars of the Bush camp - Powell resigned because he couldn't stomach it anymore, but she stepped in and continued the falsifications. Maybe in the best interest of herself, but certainly not in the best interest of our country. I remember her lying to the American people from Camp David after we invaded Iraq - lies upon lies - and to think that now she's being touted as a viable candidate for national office turns my stomach - what's Collin think?

Concerned   February 22nd, 2008 10:39 pm ET

Im African American and I am a Hillary supporter, but if Condi was to run, I would seriously reconsider my vote for Hillary. Condi is a very smart and powerful woman with lots of experience. She only had to do what she was told under the Bush administration, buy as a vp, she would have free rain to do what she wants to do. I really want her to run.
