Watch why many immigrants fear they will be unable to vote.

(CNN) — Over a half million legal immigrants who applied for citizenship may not be able to vote due to overwhelming demand, CNN's Thelma Gutierrez reports.

… and just last week President Bush was advocating "free and fair: elections for Cuba.

Maybe we should make sure our own elections are "free and fair" first.

The GOP administration can drag its governmental feet until after the election, making sure those who will probably not vote Republican don't get to vote at all. The GOP is already trying these tactics with poll taxes under the guise of non-proven cases of "vote fraud" in some states.

We fear exclusion from latino's when they revert to speaking spanish in a nation of english speaking people, and we have no idea what they are talking about.

Joey Garcia   February 23rd, 2008 2:59 pm ET

AP recent statement of Obama's unpatriotic stand in placing the American lapel on his coat, or putting his right hand over the chest during ceremonies in the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag, is a stand, as I believe, unpatriotic really.
Whoever manages Obama's campaign strategy, as the world sees it and have termed as "plagiarism" goes on to the TV seconder ad of a drug company ORENCIA, that the byword of "Yes We Can" either have been a copy cat by the Obama's byword, or was the inception of this particular ad came before or after Obama shouted to his campaign motto?
He might be a charismatic candidate, so is Hucabee and Romney. So, whats the difference why people continue to rally to the cause of an 8 termer Senator who thinks he can save America in a so called CHANGE when he has no projection what to do if ever he sits down as the President of this great country? Is he playing a sort of jigsaw puzzle, or "wish upon a star", or seek the notes of Nostradamus?
Before the Nov elections, let us ponder and think a million times who among the Democrats can best serve America, something that has been there before and just correcting the wrong and pace to a new frontier.
Obama's foreign expertise is limited to his boyhood days, something which he has to correct first rather than face the huge problems that Bush and company has left as a legacy for the next president????

JOHN   February 23rd, 2008 2:51 pm ET

IF THEY VOTE FOR OBAMA LET THEM VOTE.

Elder   February 23rd, 2008 2:50 pm ET

It depends of when or what time they will take the citizenship test or apply for citizenship. I am latino, I became citizen last year.
In this presidential election, I want to vote. Mr. Obama can you be more specific about change. What is exactly change? Mr. Obama.

gengyue   February 23rd, 2008 2:40 pm ET

That's for sure. I am not able to vote this time. It is regretful.

I applied citizenship two years ago. I was interviewed in two months after I sent application. I have been waiting for name check and still no news.

nick   February 23rd, 2008 2:39 pm ET

if they are not legal citizen they should not be able to vote.

LatinoNation   February 23rd, 2008 2:35 pm ET

This is The American way i suppose ! I see no one gives a crap if your not mexican or the country would be rasing hell so you either have to be black or white in order to have anything in this USA!!

Edd   February 23rd, 2008 2:30 pm ET

I wish they can vote, the Latinos are greatful for all the good things Bill Clinton have done to them. If they can vote, they will definitely vote for HILLARY CLINTON, it showed in CA, AZ, NM & soon TX! HILLARY & BILL has a long relationship with the Latinos, nothing can sway that!

I just find it fascinating that Obama is using Cesar Chavez name on his campaign just to woo Latinos, he never used his name before until now! So fake and self indulging! Hope the Latinos would see this!

GO HILLARY in TX, OHIO, PA! RI & VT as well!

Obama 2016   February 23rd, 2008 2:25 pm ET

Go Obama 2016!

earl illingsworth   February 23rd, 2008 2:20 pm ET

Isn't that a crying shame ,amigo?

EB   February 23rd, 2008 2:15 pm ET

WHO CARES? IF THEY ARE NOT YET CITIZENS THEN THEY CAN'T VOTE ANYWAYS. AGAIN……WHOCARES

Latino for Hillary   February 23rd, 2008 2:13 pm ET

Latinos will not be forgotten by Hillary. But she needs our votes to happen.

David Jones   February 23rd, 2008 2:10 pm ET

they need to stay in line and respect the process…if they can't vote now, they will have the opportunity to vote in the future!

this is not about the election, so to try to insinuate such is below the belt journalism!

Thomas   February 23rd, 2008 2:05 pm ET

If you aren't a citizen of this country then you don't get to vote for who leads this country. If they've already gone through LEGAL AND PROPER channels for citizenship, but it just hasn't gone through yet… i'm sorry, try voting next time.

Why not rush them through or let them vote anyway? Because of how many ILLEGAL immigrants there are who will try to vote. Latino radio shows have told them how to go about casting votes without being citizens, and la raza pushes it hard. It would be a lot faster and easier to get legal citizenship pushed through, if the epidemic of illegal immigration was thwarted.

Tony, CN   February 23rd, 2008 1:58 pm ET

Same old corruption just in a different form, get use to it Jose or go back home..

Angela   February 23rd, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Viva Clinton Viva!!!! Viva Solutions Viva!!! Clinton is rich in experience and rich in years in her giving to others. This is one Latina woman who knows through personal experience that change for the sake of change is never a good thing. Clinton has solutions. Clinton's understanding of problems that we are faced with has the knowledge, experience and the insight to the path that will bring the Change that we Americans want!!!!!

LXS   February 23rd, 2008 1:50 pm ET

Thats it!?! wheres the rest of your story……..

Alice   February 23rd, 2008 1:45 pm ET

Oh, let's just do the Oreo cookie dance

Obama is so Black on the outside, and so White on the inside

Poor thing can't even dance properly

He "twisted and shouted" to country music

Guess he hears the beat of a different drummer……!

Ed K.   February 23rd, 2008 1:44 pm ET

Obama will be happy.

Byron in CA   February 23rd, 2008 1:34 pm ET

Just another example of how our system doesn't work for the people trying to get in this country legally. The system is geared more toward helping those that entered the country illegally than those trying to take the legal path toward US citizenship. But that really has been the problem for decades.

John - Spokane, WA   February 23rd, 2008 1:31 pm ET

Look, it takes time to become a full fledged legal citizen with Voting rights - Deal with it ! Its just Bull #@# that people show up in this Country within the last year and expect to have Carte Blanche ! YOULL GET YOUR CHANCE BUT YOU MUST EARN IT !!!

Anna, IL   February 23rd, 2008 1:28 pm ET

My family patiently waited in line and became naturalized citizens of US without any complaint. The process typically takes 1 to 2.5 years. This is nothing new. Ms. Gutierrez should have asked the man how long he has waited before he decided to apply for his citizenship. There are many legal immigrants (greencard holders) who don't even bother applying for citizenship because they don't want to abandon citizenship of the country of their origin. While I think people shouldn't be taxed without representation (i.e. legal immigrant residents), I don't see why the Department of Immigration should do things differently just because it's the election year.

Houston   February 23rd, 2008 1:27 pm ET

Legal immigrants who have the right to vote should always be granted the privledge to exercise that right just like any other American.

The problem described here is that overwhelming demand is overwhelming. Sorry, but that's the way it is. Maybe they should have thought of that if they procrastinated applying.

We should do our best to help these people, but beyond that there's nothing more we can OR should do. If there's corruption behind this it should be mopped up and the people behind it run out of town on a rail.

A 17 year old can't complain that it's unfair he can't vote just because he turns 18 the year after the election. Sometimes things just don't go your way.

Victor Ramirez   February 23rd, 2008 1:21 pm ET

It's just another way of the Republican party, tring to insure Hilary Clinton does not make it to the White House. Latinos unite and vote Hilary Clinton so that our voice will be heard and our issues addressed.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   February 23rd, 2008 1:21 pm ET

The government raised citizenship application fees from $400 to $600 and Latinos complained but did pay. These people work and pay taxes like other Americans and can't vote due the Government's failure. Latino Americans, keep fighting for your rights.

david   February 23rd, 2008 1:18 pm ET

CNN shows Clinton's campaign but does not show how many people are there?

joanna   February 23rd, 2008 12:32 pm ET

I would be more concerned whatever they know all of the issues facing this country other than illegal immigration. I seriously doubt that the majority of them are familiar with Hillary Clinton and Obama's different approaches to solving some of the most important issues confronting us.
Of course they probably will be told for whom to vote for by some of the most aggressive Latino activists, who are looking on this election as an occasion to entrench themselves as "leaders" of the disenchanchized.

sylvia   February 23rd, 2008 12:21 pm ET

DOES THE WORDS ONLY APPLIED MEAN ANYTHING????WHY SHOULD THEY HAVE THE RIGHT TO VOTE???WHY IS IT WE WILL NOT MAKE SPANISH OUR NATIONAL LANUAGE????HELLO YOU ARE IN AMERICA NOW WE ARE NOT CROSSING YOUR BORDERS YOU ARE CROSSING OURS..WHY DO WE NOT HAVE" IN GOD WE TRUST" OR SAYING" MERRY CHRISTMAS",OUR PRAYERS IN OUR SCHOOLS ANYMORE???THIS IS OUR COUNTRY ENGLISH IS OUR NATIVE LANUAGE .YOU INVADE OUR COUNTRY ILLEGALLY AND WANT ALL OUR RIGHTS TAKEN AWAY, IF YOU WANT TO SPEAK SPANISH STAY IN YOUR COUNTRY…I AM SICK OF THE THINGS GOING ON IN OUR COUNTRY FROM PEOPLE THAT WANT TO LIVE LIKE AN AMERICAN BUT DON'T RESPECT OUR CUSTOMS.WE HAVE CHRISTMAS HERE WE SAY THE PLEDGE,WE BELIEVE IN GOD IF YOU CAN'T HANDLE THAT GO HOME…

LISSA   February 23rd, 2008 12:06 pm ET

I don’t understand how people can be so mesmerize by Obama when Clinton clearly should be our next president. Obama may have magnetism but that will not make him a good president. As a person from other country I cannot believe what is happening with the American people. I understand that the country is in a bad situation but this is the time when we should make rational decisions and not be mesmerize but someone that he may be a good speaker in a convention of course, taking the words from someone other person because he clearly was not good in a debate. Countries have made mistakes when the countries where in bad economic situations and had mesmerize by in eloquent speaker take for instance Castro or Hitler. I’m sorry for my English

Desmond   February 23rd, 2008 12:03 pm ET

After listening to Obama speech, promise of change…not sure how can he change the followings…

1) Housing prices continue to decline
2) End trade deficit
3) Present US projected sluggish economy
4) High inflation
5) Job loss

These are important issues, and his speeches not convincing enough to fix the problem.

I don't think Hillary Clinton will be able to fix that overnight as well, but I do think that she has the vision and act progressively to fix the problem. Her speech is more convincing than Obama.

I really think US is on the wrong side of selecting the sutiable candidates for President nomination. How could a Super Power country and it's people gonna make such a mistake.

Wish you good luck.

susan leff   February 23rd, 2008 12:00 pm ET

When Hillary was ahead 100 pledged delegates, there was no media frenzy about "momentum", no positive press at all! Now Obama is ahead by 100 delegates, and the media is so biased in their reporting, that I believe you will all go down in history as the group who drove the election for the first black president. I guess that will make a better headline than the first female president, in your opinion. Well, Hillary still has the experience, if not the political pundits' press-appointed halo. Why don't you all create a buzz about counting Florida's delegates? Are you all so chauvinistic that you so fear a strong, capable female leader? Go to the polls, ladies, go to the polls, and show them what "CHANGE" really means!!! If you don't, the Rezko slum lord types will be running the country next, and haven't we had enough corrupt government in the last 8 years???

SMART1   February 23rd, 2008 11:53 am ET

Not a legal citizen, well you can't vote! There are many laws which excludes Americans from voting, such as a felony, non payment of child support ( in some states) for example. As U.S. citizens we must abide by the policies of the voting system. IT'S THE LAW.

Clare   February 23rd, 2008 11:52 am ET

To be counted you have to ask those that can vote to do it for Hillary or McCain.

don't let obama and his shameful xeroxing of the slogan "si se puede" kid you. Cesar Chavez 's descendants and Huertas, the author of the slogan, have endorse Hillary NOT obama.

HILLARY OR MCCAIN or even perhaps HILLARY/MCCAIN 08 & 12

Mike in Cleveland   February 23rd, 2008 11:48 am ET

I think the law is pretty simple in this case; if you aren't a citizen, you should not be allowed to vote.

carole in CT   February 23rd, 2008 11:47 am ET

I am completely disgusted with the outrageous media bias which has been unrelentingly pro Obama and anti Hillary. Moreover, it is more outrageous because there is no reality based basis for the prejudice. Clinton is so overwhelmingly more qualified for the JOB (not beauty contest or high school homecoming contest) of being US PRESIDENT. Once again, it appears as if (with the enormous persuasive biased coverage of the media) the American electorate is choosing rhetoric over substance. As others have said, if Obama becomes the candidate, I will be not voting in a presidential election for the first time in my (61 yr old) life. How depressing and demoralizing.

Dana Broxton   February 23rd, 2008 11:45 am ET

i understand why they are concerned however, there is a process to becoming legal and if that means that they cant vote, they just cant vote. I am not by any means against illegal aliens but i do think that they are becoming a little arrogant with their demands. I would just be greatful to be in america and to have the opportunity to be here.

michael   February 23rd, 2008 11:42 am ET

hillary 'll need all mexico votes to be the winner in texas not just 500.00 legal( ??) immigrants

jp/michigan   February 23rd, 2008 11:36 am ET

That's democracy for you. It take forever to get what you need from the government. But when they want something, all of a sudden things happen quickly. Don"t feel bad @ 67 yrs. of age a democrat for 47 yrs. because I live in Michigan the Democratic Party decided my vote no longer counts.

remy white   February 23rd, 2008 11:17 am ET

i would say regarding the situation regarding the imigrant voting issue??this is the main reasons latino americans should really think hard about which democratic candidate they will vote for.in my opinion the only choice is hillary clinton.senator clintons proven record of her efforts on behalf of latin americans speaks for itself,as she spoke on debate thurs night,ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THEN WORDS,incidently that debate will be on again, sat and sun night 8pm CNN. the question here is which of the two,sen clinton or senator obama will make a difference FOR ALL THE PEOPLE.not just one group, senator clinton for 30 years in her all her efforts, has clearly demonstrated she is a proven agent of solutions, not just a bunch of fluff and empty promises, clinton 08.

California Independent   February 23rd, 2008 11:16 am ET

This is kind of sad. Some of this was expected as some immigrants never bothered to apply over the years, but waited until the cost was going to go up. It's not just that immigration services are understaffed, some never cared about citizenship until money was an issue.

JB   February 23rd, 2008 11:14 am ET

Look, I have friends over the years that have tried to register at the last minute, and were unable to vote. These friends were white, black and hispanic.

If you tried to register to late, you may not be able to vote. It is that simple. Next time!

Grif   February 23rd, 2008 11:08 am ET

Fixed Politics again?

TheLeftNut   February 23rd, 2008 11:02 am ET

Let's see…

Republicans want immagrants out, so…

This must be the Republicans fault.

Perhaps, latinos should vote Democratic…Yeah, that's a good idea.

Eric Jolly   February 23rd, 2008 10:59 am ET

Why should they be able to vote? They aren't citizens. Even if I were a legal immigrant in Canada, I wouldn't expect to go there and be able to try to vote.

Anonymous   February 23rd, 2008 10:56 am ET

i have never seen such a unfair media coverage on the political issues

ric   February 23rd, 2008 10:51 am ET

Of course they won't be able to vote … they would vote Democrat so their application will be delayed till after the election.

Indie in Iowa   February 23rd, 2008 10:51 am ET

If Jesus has been in the United States ILLEGALLY since he was 10, why has he not applied before now? Seems like he is the one who was waiting and now we have to feel sorry for him. Not buying it. My grandfather came here legally and he is turning over in his grave over all these criminals coming up from Mexico crying that they can't get their way after breaking American laws. Forgive me if I don't cry.

Mike   February 23rd, 2008 10:44 am ET

It is wrong for people who are here illegally to work to vote, receive government benefits when they cant pay taxes. Even non-British people that work in England have to give half their wages to taxes for the first 10 years.

That being said illegals that are here should be given an easy path to citizenship so they can be part of the tax base. Then they should get a vote and every other right a US citizen enjoys. This country is nothing but a country of immigrants and should still welcome the tired and poor….

KAS   February 23rd, 2008 10:41 am ET

I am no fan of Fidel Castro, but McCain's comments are an insight into what type of president he would be if he won. The last thing we need is another 8 years of Bush's foreign policy. This is scary!!!
