McCain made clear Friday he's not sorry to see Castro go.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Likely Republican presidential nominee John McCain says he doesn't look for any major political reforms in Cuba until after Fidel Castro dies, adding he hopes that's not far off.

As McCain put it during a campaign stop in Indiana Friday, "I hope he has the opportunity to meet Karl Marx very soon."

That's a reference to the author of "The Communist Manifesto," who died in 1883.

McCain's comments follow an argument between Democratic contenders Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama over the best way to push for change in Cuba.

Castro himself has responded to the barbed interest in his decision to step down this week as Cuba's leader.

Eighty-one years-old and infirm, Castro says he's enjoyed seeing "the embarrassing position of all the presidential candidates" making "demands of Cuba." And he says he made the right call by
stepping down.

I do not think it is appropriate for anyone, much less a candidate for President of the US, to wish death on anyone.

Patrick Anthony Drake   February 23rd, 2008 10:16 am ET

The freedom, independence and prosperity of the beautiful Cuban people is all that matters.

CT Gary   February 23rd, 2008 10:16 am ET

Can anyone name another presient who said that wished somebody would die?! How can anyone vote for this guy?

Ian Webster   February 23rd, 2008 10:18 am ET

Oh yeah, way to show your Christian beliefs, you hypocrite.

D Boyce   February 23rd, 2008 10:18 am ET

Wise move, hoping people die

Richard, St. Paul, MN   February 23rd, 2008 10:19 am ET

I think it's incredibly sick and disgusting, not to mention un-Christian and uncharitable, to wish for anyone's death. This is NOT the type of behavior or attitude I want to see in our next President. I was actually leaning towards McCain, but after hearing this, I'm beginning to think that Obama may be the only rational candidate running on either side of the aisle.

Jake   February 23rd, 2008 10:20 am ET

I'm a bit flabbergasted by this. Sure Castro isn't a great guy, but openly saying this? Wow…

Stephen Sockett   February 23rd, 2008 10:22 am ET

McCain must be a throw back to when hatred, fear, ignorance and misrepresentation running the republican party….oh wait a minute that's their platform now. Mr McCain could use a lesson in politics and diplomacy. If this is an example of the type of maturity he brings to the table I would be worried about a republican win. Let's just hope that Ms Clinton and Mr Obama rectify their adversity towards one another and form the next government.

Torianto   February 23rd, 2008 10:23 am ET

I find this comment from John McCain to be quite disturbing especially considering he could become the next President of the United States.

Republicans are always talking about how religion plays a great role in their life. For a self proclaimed Christian to hope for one to die is nothing short of appalling! Would Jesus wish death upon his enemies? Whatever happen to love your enemies! If you state you are a Christian, then you better be able to back it up not just with words but in deeds as well!

DinaLee   February 23rd, 2008 10:25 am ET

There are just some things that you never want to put out there, even if you think it. It's called using common sense and good judgement. This is a telling and alarming statement.

Barbara Womack   February 23rd, 2008 10:28 am ET

How presidential. That's right up there with "Bomb, bomb.bomb…bomd bomb Iran." While I have the utmost respect for McCain as as former prisoner of war, I find him severely lacking in tact and diplomacy. We've had eight years of this type of international relations, the results of which have made us reviled thorout the world. Enough already. Pair his attitude with his complete lack of understanding of economic principles, and he comes up very short of the requirements to run this country.

Harold Strauss   February 23rd, 2008 10:30 am ET

If McCain made a statement as was published on the web about Castro, then I think he should apoligize. Saying such things is not/should not be rectorally directed at leaders of foreign countries. Just because they failed to get rid of him, is not an excuse for any government leader to verbally make such a statement. Shame on you Mr. McCain. This is the sort of thing that is the cause of many of the friends we used to have turning away from the U.S. Remember what they say about speaking softly and carrying a big sword?

M Johnson   February 23rd, 2008 10:31 am ET

What a rotten, tasteless thing to say. Not very presidential.

eva   February 23rd, 2008 10:33 am ET

McCain is a mean man. I like Ron Paul's idea…when Castro is gone, TRADE with Cuba..be civil. The world would be a better place if more politicians had that opinion.

Perhaps McCain should try to be a kinder person.

Roy P   February 23rd, 2008 10:33 am ET

This is leading by example? Bitter remarks usually come back to bite us. Occupation by any country has never worked. It has less chance if the world thinks we are not on the moral highground.

Chris   February 23rd, 2008 10:33 am ET

It is remarkable that someone who claims to be a Christian should wish death on another human being, no matter how repugnant. This is one of our country's profoundest and most widespread hypocrisies. John McCain should be ashamed of himself.

Sam   February 23rd, 2008 10:35 am ET

Maccain is the man!!!!

Lisa Salt Lake City, Utah   February 23rd, 2008 10:36 am ET

Mark, Niagara Falls, NY   February 23rd, 2008 10:41 am ET

spoken like a true "Christian".

alan   February 23rd, 2008 10:42 am ET

Good riddance to Castro. History will remember him for what he was.
A small time dictator of no consequence. Thee sooner he's gone the better for the people of Cuba.

jd   February 23rd, 2008 10:44 am ET

Although no fan of Castro, he must find it very amusing how our politicians fall over themselves trying to outdo each other in sometimes ridiculous anti-Castro statements. All this to appease the pro-Batista, Cuban, swing-voter immigrants (or descendents of such) in FL. All along, Castro's thrived thro' this attention and the best way to have marginalized him would probably have been to ignore him. He's always had and probably will till the end and afterwards have the last laugh.

Vanessa   February 23rd, 2008 10:48 am ET

This is the candidate Republicans want to in the white house???
Threatening the enemy only makes the situation worst. Which is why I'm an Obama supporter. Talking with the enemy is the solution. Acting as if America is somewhat superior will NOTTT bring about change.

Ruth in Arizona   February 23rd, 2008 10:48 am ET

What a awful thing to say. He does know he most likely won't win the election.
People are tired of angry old men that have something negitive to say about every one else. We now know that invading other peoples land makes us the enemy not the saviors.

Tyler, Wilmington, NC   February 23rd, 2008 10:49 am ET

That's great… another 4 years of making the U.S. an isolationist type country and divide us internally and with the rest of the world…. well, you won't have that chance because it will be a Dem in the W.H. regardless of who gets the nomination.

McCain isn't even ahead in some strong southern state polls. NC is going DEM in 2008, and Clinton or Obama will ride the coat tails of our new DEM governor, Perdue or Moore.

Craig H, Mpls, MN   February 23rd, 2008 10:50 am ET

McCain hopes Castro dies. I think we might all like Cuba to hold free elections, but Hoping Castro dies isn't going to influence the leadership of Cuba to emulate the free world. Comments like that just build animocities. Not very presidential Mr. McCain. This coupled with McCains singing his "Bomb Iran" song makes me think that we would be in for much more than 100 yrs of war if McCain is elected president.

ILoveAmerica   February 23rd, 2008 10:51 am ET

McCain's remark is disgraceful and certainly falls below the standards we expect from someone running for President.

Voter in SC   February 23rd, 2008 10:52 am ET

I find McCain's comments about Castro to be horrendously OFFENSIVE.
We don't need that kind of mind and attitude in a Pres.

As if "100 years more" in Iraq wasn't bad enough. He wants to send
GENERATIONS of our, children, grandchildren, G-grandchildren, over there. What will he call this program, "No Child Left Behind?"

Steven Krivit   February 23rd, 2008 10:53 am ET

I think the article misses an important factor in McCain's attitude about the Castro regime. McCain has commented previously that the Cuban government sent officials to Hanoi during the time of his incarceration as a POW and those Cubans directly participated in the abusive treatment that he received.

eric   February 23rd, 2008 10:53 am ET

Hmm, we don't deal economically with Cuba because of human rights violations? Yet we deal with China….What exactly has Castro done recently? Oh, yeah, not chase Micheal Moore out of their waters from the movie Sicko. Hmm, how old is Castro? How old is McCain?

Ed   February 23rd, 2008 10:54 am ET

So much for "Christian" behavior. Is he afaid of Castro?

Ben From Dover   February 23rd, 2008 10:55 am ET

McCain doesn't sound very "christian-like"!

Itzme   February 23rd, 2008 10:55 am ET

Thats pretty rude. I dont agree with McCains politics but I sure dont wish he were meeting Nixon either. What a terrible thing to say.

Derek   February 23rd, 2008 10:55 am ET

Amazing how a "Christian" can willingly wish someone dies soon…evidently his religion doesn't apply when it involves political figures or campaigning. Does that mean the ten commandments are null and void now?

tim   February 23rd, 2008 10:56 am ET

I am Canadian. If I were an American I definitely indetify myself as a 'Democrat'. I am somewhat surprised that McCain would publicly announce that Castro dies 'not far off'. Out of curiouslity, for all the millions of Americans that despise George Bush and his pathetic tenure as leader of the American people, what would be the reaction, politically and publically, if someone stated to the press that they hoped that George W. Bush would soon die and have the opportunity to meet with the other 'worst presidents in U.S. history???

I would never utter those words, as I find them offensive. No matter what someone's political ideals are, they still have family and foloowers that love them. To wish an early death upon someone, unless they are truly 'evil', says a lot about the person making that statement.

And, for the U.S. governement, what is the MAIN appeal to bringing democracy to Cuba? My bets would be that the answer is: opportunity…..not opportunity for the Cuban people….if the politicians uttered those words they would be lieing through their teeth. The opportunity is for American business to invest in Cuba. While the Europeans and Candadian companies invest in Cuba, the U.S. has been losing out on the opportunity to 'CASH IN' on the bonanza…..I believe that is the main impetus for the U.S. interests.

Rich   February 23rd, 2008 10:57 am ET

McCain…What a warm human being…I hope Castro dies soon. Wishing somebody dead . Now, that's the kind of man I want as my president!
Republicans….won't trade with Cuba, but just loves China. It's time for a change. We need to be involved with Cuba and their wonderful people.

rhigh   February 23rd, 2008 10:57 am ET

it's comments such as this, that makes McCain unworthy to be President of the United States of America

shyril beck   February 23rd, 2008 10:58 am ET

I am not a fan of Fidel Castro, but what a terrible thing to say.

SB   February 23rd, 2008 10:58 am ET

It's really inappropriate for someone who wants to be the leader of the free world to speak this way. Haven't we had enough of "Wanted: Dead or Alive".

Barack Obama is our best hope.

Torell   February 23rd, 2008 10:59 am ET

And this guys is suppose to be our future president, making a comment like this……….

James   February 23rd, 2008 11:01 am ET

One dinosaur speaking about another. Yawn.

Tom Wittmann   February 23rd, 2008 11:01 am ET

HOW ABOUT CHAVEZ ??

He is democratelly elected, accepted defeat in a plebiscite, there are
no polical prisoners, the press is ultra-free competing who insults him more.
Only he is very vocal against the US.

And he has great influence on FEDEL CASTRO !! Could he be a vehicle to change Cuba and in the process, the poor US relations with the the Chavez-friendly regime in South America would be mended ??

But of course, the State Department must ged rid of the ultra-Miami-Cuban, whose demonizing of Chavez is a big factor in Chavez atitude
in front of the US

Ralph Harding   February 23rd, 2008 11:02 am ET

I am sure Fidel Castro feels the same way about John McCain.

Allen   February 23rd, 2008 11:02 am ET

I saw McCain make this comment on TV and it just sounded really mean and malicious. I don't want my president wishing death on anyone. McCain says he respects human dignity, but this comment shows nothing but malice. I'm an independent voter and while the Republican party used to have good things to offer, I have to say no to McCain this year.

Mark Eccles   February 23rd, 2008 11:03 am ET

That is the statement of a freak…McCain isnt getting any younger, would love to see the look on his face, or that of his family if someone wishes for his death.

Wayne Daley   February 23rd, 2008 11:04 am ET

Fidel Castro is not a yes man for no one, leave him alone.
Long live Fidel and Mandela

dee   February 23rd, 2008 11:05 am ET

how would mc cain feel if a presidential candidate in cuba wishes him death.. republicans are terrible.. we talking of human life here.

J Johns   February 23rd, 2008 11:05 am ET

John McCain keeps proving again and again how unprepared he is to be president. Sounds like he's trying to cozy up to the right-wing fringe by way of making these bombastic statements, which they seem to enjoy. Don't bother John, conservatives will never fully accept or like you, and you'll only lose the middle-of-the road voters in the process.

Mike   February 23rd, 2008 11:05 am ET

Mccain isnt that far behind Castro in age, he should be careful of what he says. He already looks older than sin, and the white house will age a person beyond belief. There is no way this guy will ever get elected to office.

Gideon, Chicago, IL   February 23rd, 2008 11:08 am ET

Nice guy, eh?

Jacob   February 23rd, 2008 11:09 am ET

President of Any Nation should be - A Man of dignity ,Integrity , A Man who gives and takes respect . Especially across nations . Candidates has to know what ever they talk are watched around the world . So my tip is do not throw all the garbage out of your mouth .

Thatz why I Think Obama is the Best candidate
Hillary is Ok , At least Bill is respected around the World
But Not McCain , Republicans I always thought Mitt Romney was a better choice for president

Corey, Maryland   February 23rd, 2008 11:11 am ET

Well as much as this country doesn't like Fidel Castro, it is not at all appropriate for a candidate to say something like that, or any other person for that matter. I was going to vote for McCain if Obama didn't get the nomination, but now because of this comment, if its Clinton vs. McCain I would rather see Clinton in office than McCain, which is saying a lot because I HATE Clinton.

Obama Richardson 08!!!!!

Mark Mountford   February 23rd, 2008 11:11 am ET

The comment is very sad and demonstrates that Mr Mccain lack the maturity to hold the position he is currently seeking. This is a huge black mark agaisnt his name.

Alan   February 23rd, 2008 11:11 am ET

That's exactly the hawkish kind of statement that makes me wary of John McCain. I want a president who knows how to relate to people–even the ones they don't agree with–not the kind who spews the kind of childish insults we've come to expect from the Republicans. I like McCain a lot better when he shows his independence and maturity than when he shows his hardliner side

Cindy   February 23rd, 2008 11:11 am ET

I think whether you agree or disagree with someone's political view you should never wish harm or death on them. McCain as a candidate for the presidency of this nation. showed his lack of good judgment. The next person elected needs to be one with some decorum.

Bill   February 23rd, 2008 11:12 am ET

That's your plan? That you hope he dies? For that matter, let's hope that all the bad guys from Korea, Iran, Iraq, etc. die! That sure would make things easier. But in the mean time, I plan to vote for a president who might actually try to make the world a better place.

Kelly   February 23rd, 2008 11:12 am ET

CNN, I find it disheartening how shamelessly you exploit, well, pretty much anything you can, to grab readers attention. The headline reads "McCain: I hope Castro dies". I don't see anywhere in the article where he said that. Shame on you.

Karl Marx   February 23rd, 2008 11:12 am ET

You know it seems that the only thing more inflammatory than McCain using Karl Marx to make a clever quip about how he would like to see Castro dead is the fact that CNN felt the need to explain who Karl Marx was. The saddest part is that CNN is right. We're all supposed to be red blooded commy hating Americans but most of us couldn't even tell you who Karl Marx was or why he is one of the more important figures in history.

sbshield   February 23rd, 2008 11:13 am ET

Maybe war and chaos is McCain's existence. Maybe he lives for war.
That could be a bit scary for our children if this man believes that war is a natural state of mind.

nick   February 23rd, 2008 11:16 am ET

How sad it is to have a Christian man wish death on anyone. I thought that Christians are to pray and hope that all come to know the Lord and to pray that he who is lost be found. It is all politics because I know that McCain does not have the GUTS to say that about the leaders or leader of China with all of human right violations that they have. That is the problem that the rest of the world have with us, we will pick a fight with the little guy but kiss up to those with greater or equal power.
Change is on the way.

Lisa   February 23rd, 2008 11:17 am ET

And this is the man some want for president????

maia   February 23rd, 2008 11:17 am ET

Shame on you! These are the types of messages that send out poison from our country and continue to make us look like arrogant beasts. Perhaps you will meet your maker soon too, but to wish that someone should die a hasty death is just deplorable. God bless you Fidel. Maia

California Independent   February 23rd, 2008 11:18 am ET

Why would it matter if Castro dies? Isn't his brother in control? I think the demands of the Dems are odd too. Just more arrogance on the part of the US.

ArntorFTL   February 23rd, 2008 11:19 am ET

Wow. What a fantastic diplomat. Are these the kinds of things we want the President of our country to be saying about other world leaders?

Andrew   February 23rd, 2008 11:19 am ET

Did he actually say this or is this CNN hyping up a headline?

Biz   February 23rd, 2008 11:19 am ET

McCain is just as old as Castro….so he might just not want to tempt karma by wishing death on anyone……it just might come back and kill him.

Patty Atlanta GA   February 23rd, 2008 11:20 am ET

More proof this man doesn't know Jesus.

TJ Marlo   February 23rd, 2008 11:20 am ET

For Senator McCain to suggest that he hopes Fidel Castro dies, is reminisent of business as usual. In a country where we are taught to forgive, I find his remarks to be at the level of watching moss grow on a rock. This is the primary reason I am voting for CHANGE. We need a leadership that embraces other countries instead of spending billion attempting to blow them up. While I laud Senator McCain for his service, other Disabled Vietnam Veterans such as myself, are desperetely seeking something NEW from our President.

Mike   February 23rd, 2008 11:21 am ET

McCain or Hillary have the right ideas on how to handle foreing politics. I will vote for either one of the. We have a lot to work to do we need to elect someone with experience.

Robb, New York   February 23rd, 2008 11:21 am ET

Well, tell us how you really feel, John. Don't hold back, now. LOL.

patrick   February 23rd, 2008 11:23 am ET

It is never a good idea to wish upon someone death it shows no mercy or understanding which is the same philosophy used in the Iraq war.Mercy, forgiveness and understanding is the key to peace does anyone in politics understand, forgive or have any mercy, but how could they when they are puppetted by lobbist.

dan   February 23rd, 2008 11:24 am ET

McCian's attitude is probably echo'd back by Castro too.

What a loser republican.

Jim   February 23rd, 2008 11:25 am ET

I don't think it is very presidential to wush death to any one, not even someone like Castro.

TJS   February 23rd, 2008 11:25 am ET

Shame on him. I cannot believe America would want someone like him as our leader. He is a sick person and hopefully all the truth about him comes out before it is to late. No matter he can't beat either democrat. There is no way the younger, smarter generation wants someone with his "old" ways and ideas to be their leader. I am not one of the "younger" voters but have 2 in my house and this is disgusting to them. If the republicans want to have a chance it is definetely not with McCain!

John Phillips   February 23rd, 2008 11:25 am ET

That's a rather immature comment coming from someone who's running for president of the United States. To think that Cuba will suddenly turn it's political system around is pure conjecture. Just because it worked for post Franco Spain does not mean it's going to work there. The sad thing is that most of these countries that are considered our "enemies" were actually democracies before we meddled with them.

bradley J. Riley   February 23rd, 2008 11:26 am ET

thats just awful. I understand the ideological differences the United States Government has with Cuba and especially Fidel Castro, but there is no need to wish death upon anyone. This is the first move that I've seen which makes me turn away from John McCain. That and his dirty laundry with the Keating Five incident. Apparently its been long enough for anyone to take notice of that these days.

Edwin Portland   February 23rd, 2008 11:26 am ET

Nice to see one of our leaders wishing death on a leader of a differenct country. I wonder why people hate us?

Bruce Wayne   February 23rd, 2008 11:26 am ET

Well that's a bit disturbing; you can disagree with a person, their econonic system, and all that without wishing them death. Castro sucks donkey, no doubt, but to wish him dead? Interesting those who are so quick to deal out death and judgment.

I also like the little inference that Castro will meet Marx in Hell, as if the only people allowed into the gates of Heaven are good little capitalistic, materialistic, imperialistic, greedy Republicants who leave their sick, dying wives for a trophy wife who is several years younger. Whatever McStain.

Peace   February 23rd, 2008 11:27 am ET

Thats why people are in favour of making CHANGES. Mr. McCain , Castro still exist but is a bit incapacitated. Something is to be done and afterall his brother Raul has hinted about democracy.

Hirotomi Takemitsu   February 23rd, 2008 11:27 am ET

Whatever one might think about Fidel Castro either as a man or regarding his rule of Cuba and his politics, to which him dead is SICK.
McCain's remarks remind me of the ridiculous and dangerous remarks Bush has made since 9/11. Had he not said referring to the Al Queda terrorists and others "if you want to fight America….bring it on" , shortly after 9/11, chances are the insurgency in Iraq and other acts of terrorism would be alot less. You don't bait lunatics with threats. Or call whole nations "the axis of evil" etc.
McCain is catering to the ignorant, red necked, gun totting, bible tumping , flag waving bigots that make up a good percentage of the Republican party under the tile "Republican Right", or "Conservatives".
They should be ignored. They are as dangerous as any terrorist.

patrick   February 23rd, 2008 11:28 am ET

Wow, those repugs are such wonderful Christians, aren't they….

Maxx   February 23rd, 2008 11:29 am ET

I was going to vote for McCain; however this comment changed it. I personally don't like Castro, I come from a Cuban family & for a long time have heard of all the horrible things he has done. Even the ones that no one really knows about. McCain has shown his true colors & stooped down to something that Castro himself would do; wishing on someone else's death. No matter how bad someone is, their death should never be desired, that is for GOD to wish for. Bad on you McCain, you just lost my vote, my wife's vote, and my family's vote. Good luck on an election you might just cut your own legs on.

R Distefano   February 23rd, 2008 11:29 am ET

That's some impressive foreign policy, McCain. And I sometimes wonder why films like Rambo are popular with American audiences. This fool and his shallow opinion help me understand.

G. Carlson   February 23rd, 2008 11:29 am ET

The title of this article is misleading. Such words should not be put into Mr. McCain's mouth. What kind of reporting is this?

Jim   February 23rd, 2008 11:31 am ET

I hope that McCain would be more circumspect in making comments such as this when and if (large if) he becomes President. Like it or not, Fidel Castro was the head of state of Cuba for decades. There are much better ways to speak of such a figure than to say "I hope he dies soon, etc."

Jeff in Ohio   February 23rd, 2008 11:31 am ET

Wow, wishing death on foreign heads of state. Another in a great line of our "leaders" who insult other countries to score cheap political points at home.

Ed   February 23rd, 2008 11:32 am ET

Sen McCain wishing for the death of someone? How old is catro and how old is Sen McCain?

Cosmic Comedy Queen   February 23rd, 2008 11:32 am ET

As least he's honest and realistic.

Tom M., Lake Worth, FL   February 23rd, 2008 11:35 am ET

Right John. I'm sure the minute Castro's body goes cold, democracy will instantly and spontaneously come to Cuba.

Of course the Cuban people will welcome their rich white Cuban cousins from Miami with open arms (the same ones who have lobbied Congress to keep the embargo going that has helped inpoverish them).

Fear not, Cuban people, American-style corporatist democracy is on the way! McDonald's, Starbucks, Wal-Mart, all coming soon!

Maybe Halliburton and Bechtel could lead the reconstruction effort?

SouthPaw   February 23rd, 2008 11:35 am ET

Amy in Iowa   February 23rd, 2008 11:38 am ET

Okay, this is the kind of attitude that makes the world dislike the arrogance of some Americans. I understand not liking Castro. But to say he hopes he dies is really not a nice thing to say. And McCain is almost as old as Castro now that I think of it.

Very Presidential

truth 08 time   February 23rd, 2008 11:40 am ET

i think that was a very naive statement from john mccain, he should choose his words a lil better, you may not like someone but to wish em' dead on public media is a little childish and naive!

Kristy Sanborn, Buckhorn, Mo.   February 23rd, 2008 11:41 am ET

Thats what I like about John McCain, he doesn't beat around the bush and he says it like it is. I don't think thats why castro stepped down, I think he stepped down because he fears the ones who know he's a piece of ……..

Joan   February 23rd, 2008 11:41 am ET

I didn't kow John McCain frightened me until I read this. We do need inflammatory remarks toward foreign governments. With all that can happen in the world from now and the general election in the foreign arena, I'm afraid people wiill vote for him because he was a war hero.

We do not need this man in the White House making critical and important decisions every day of the year - for four years. He's much too hot-headed. This country will be trying to heal his reputation around the world in the coming years not fan the flames.

Ashamed!   February 23rd, 2008 11:42 am ET

Mr. John McCain should be ashamed of himself for wishing death upon any other human. Mr. Castro, as bad as he may be, has outlived many U.S. Presidents and may out live him too.

He should take that statement back!

George from Minneapolis   February 23rd, 2008 11:42 am ET

McCain wishing the death of Castro is barbaric. This man does not have the character to be the president.

I bet in the next breath McCain would profess to being a God fearing christian. We don't need an immoral war mongrel as President.

What a dumb evil thing for McCain to say.

William   February 23rd, 2008 11:42 am ET

Wishing death on someone is never flattering for the one doing the wishing. There are very few people in history who really deserve(d) it. Osama bin Laden for instance. He deserves it.

Castro is just a thorn in the USA's side. He's not worth wishing dead. It does not reflect well on the United States for presidential candidates to make these kinds of inflammatory statements.

Hasn't anyone learned from the many many lessons of Iraq? These kinds of statements and bravado just make the opponent stronger.

McCain needs to exercise a bit more restraint. I'd expect this from Hillary Clinton but not John McCain. He should know better.

Ian   February 23rd, 2008 11:43 am ET

Another fine display of his foreign policy skills. If he doesn't agree with someone he wants to see them dead? Nutjob.

HP Boston   February 23rd, 2008 11:43 am ET

Careful what you wish for John, you are looking at the high numbers yourself! We do not want a president dead or alive with that last throes of vim in his lagging vigor!

Liz   February 23rd, 2008 11:43 am ET

Has he even read the Communist Manifesto?

Cuba hasn't been a serious threat in ages. U.S. policy towards Cuba is just a relic of us trying to "stamp out Communism" since it was such a "giant threat" to "our way of living". Nevermind the fact that they were dictators hiding behind the guise of communism!

I've been amused by the comments by the candidates about Cuba as well. We can't even keep our own domestic issues settled, much less the multitude of issues in Iraq…so sure, why not add Cuba to the list? The U.S. is obviously the first choice for the job due to the skill of its leaders in sorting out problems and pushing for change…their just not so skilled at what to do after the change starts happening!

David, Torrance CA   February 23rd, 2008 11:43 am ET

To me, it's unfathomable that a person who is so close to being President of the United States, does not possess the good judgement to speak publicly with a sense human decency and civility. To verbally wish death upon anyone, whether you are the president or a Joe Everyman, reveals a lack of respect for human life and that McCain is sadly lacking in presidential couth. Ronald Reagan would never have said something like this publicly even though he may have thought it. This is a man who clearly does not understand the gravity of the job he is asking us to give him.

elaine   February 23rd, 2008 11:45 am ET

UNFORTUNATELY WE HAVE KEPT THIS LITTLE WAR WITH CUBA GOING ON FOR THE LAST 50 YEARS JUST TO APPEASE THE CUBANS IN FLORIDA….ITS NOT EXACTLY LIKE CUBA WAS A FREE COUNTRY WHEN CASTRO CAME IN..IT WAS BEING RAN BY A ELITE RICH FEW….THE MAFFIA…UNITED STATES AND SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS AND THE PEOPLE WERE STILL POOR AND BE EXPLOITED…AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS ON CASTRO LIFE FROM THE USA HE DECIDED TO TAKE SOME HELP FROM THE RUSSIANS AND TRY AND PUT UP MISSILES…CAN YOU BLAME HIM??? NOW AS AN AMERICAN I HAVE SEE US MAKE FRIENDS WITH COUNTRIES WHO WERE ARE ENEMIES AND WHO STILL TO THIS DATE ARE COMMUNIST…CHINA…VIETNAM..RUSSIA BUT FOR GOD SAKE LETS NEVER EVER FORGIVE THAT LITTLE ISLAND OF CUBA AND CASTRO. I THINK ITS VERY SAD THAT WE LET A HANDFUL OF CUBANS DICTATE TO US WHO WE CAN BEFRIEND..BESIDES MOST OF THESE CUBANS DIDN'T GET INVITATIONS TO COME OVER TO THIS COUNTRY TO BEGIN WITH.

ernest helms   February 23rd, 2008 11:45 am ET

How Christian of him…

Annie O   February 23rd, 2008 11:46 am ET

Comments like that from McCain should be beneath someone who wants to be the leader of the most powerful country in the world. We should lead by example, not by hateful and antagonistic comments like that. Of course, this is the kind of thing I'd expect from someone who jokes about bombing Iran. Yeah, it's all a big joke.

Pat M Canada   February 23rd, 2008 11:46 am ET

John McCain's statement does not surprise me. It is what I would expect from a War Monger.

However, it is not the kind of statement any Presidential Candidate should be making publicly. What example does this send the world regarding America? Is their image not tarnished enough?

America needs a diplomatic President for any hope of bringing even a semblance of Peace around the world. And given the Kosovo situation an supposed to be experienced politician should know better than to make such statements. America does not need a hot head like John McCain spewing anti semetic rhetoric and taking pot shots at other World Leaders. This helps the situation how? It adds more fury to a fire already burning.

Val   February 23rd, 2008 11:46 am ET

Nice. Do people really want him in the White House? Our international relations would go further down the toilet than they already are!

Clare   February 23rd, 2008 11:46 am ET

I admire McCain and will vote for him if obama is the democratic candidate; however, this is the kind of comments that do not help us build a good leadership position with the rest of the world.

Castro is laughing at McCain's comments and is counting on the naiveté of obama toto have a bbq conversation.

People we have bigger fish to fry in our own country. Let's hope that Cuba will have the strength to determine their own fate.

Barb   February 23rd, 2008 11:47 am ET

Nothing like strong Christian Morals!! Great Republican!

miki quick   February 23rd, 2008 11:47 am ET

Just wonderful. If this is what we are to expect from McCain it does not bode well for diplomatic relations anywhere in the world. A ham handed and bull headed approach is what this administration has become well known for. If McCain wins, we will get four more years of the same, no doubt. The more he talks, the more he damages himself. Where are his "handlers"?

Jay   February 23rd, 2008 11:47 am ET

This is the man who wants to become the president of the united states and the best he can do , is wish that an old foe die so that he can deal with Cuba after his death.

This political season has been an real eye opener. First Bill's racist remarks, then this whole issue about who copied whose speeches and now this….. and I don't want to go on about the Hillary

I thought we had better people than these running for the presidency.

America we can sure do better than this,

Amy, Central FL   February 23rd, 2008 11:48 am ET

Very presidential of you McCain, ya moron. Sheesh.

Dave W.   February 23rd, 2008 11:49 am ET

I thought McCain wanted to change what was wrong with Washington. He was going to be different. Well he is obviously going to be the same pig headed bully that has been in office for the last two terms. The USA has a major problem. Bush has made so many enemies around the world with his "my way or the highway attitude" that you need a real leader (not puppet) who is a real diplomat. He will not deal with Cuba because of Florida voters, but has no problems dealing with China, Vietnam, or North Korea. McCain is going to be exactly like Bush, and right now that is the last thing the USA needs.

Sneaky Pete   February 23rd, 2008 11:50 am ET

Typical of McCain and those of his ilk. If we disagree with them - wish them dead - kill them if they get in our way. This is what we have to look forward to with him … another merchant of death.

Frank Tillery   February 23rd, 2008 11:50 am ET

Despite any political differences we may have with any world leader, it is not right to wish death on anyone. He was chosen leader of his country despite whether we like him or his policies. If the people of Cuba did not want him in power, he would not have been there.

Mr. McCain, you of all people should respect life, particularly at your age. How would you feel if someone made a similiar statement about you because of your political beliefs? Concentrate on winning the nomination of your party and hopefully becoming President.

Zach   February 23rd, 2008 11:51 am ET

"I hate the gooks, I've always hated them." - John McCain

George   February 23rd, 2008 11:51 am ET

Is he complete idiot ??? Is that what the Bible says ??? Is it good to wish someone's death???? HE is like GWB …. no difference at all

BH   February 23rd, 2008 11:52 am ET

This is exactly why this man does not deserve 4 years in the White House.

bret   February 23rd, 2008 11:53 am ET

i ask you ; what kind of mentality is it? to wish death on a person. i'm so thankful that NO man or woman can set my time but GOD. and this person is running for the highest office in the US. hmmmmmmmmmmm scary

Michael   February 23rd, 2008 11:53 am ET

Once again McCain shows that you can be an old man with the maturity of a young prairie dog. "I hope he dies" really shows the political attitude of this frightful man. This is all besides the fact there there are many individuals dedicated to maintaining Cuba as a socialist nation, the death of Castro not even denting the political machine that is the party in power in Cuba.

I hope Senator McCain meets Ronald Reagen again very soon.

KO   February 23rd, 2008 11:54 am ET

This is just very cruel for John McCain wishing somebody to die soon.

Ross Wilson   February 23rd, 2008 11:55 am ET

So Mr. McCain now hopes Fidel Castro dies. What a mean-spirited statement characteristic of Republican intolerance! In wishing that Castro soon meet Carl Marx, John McCain would do well also to recall Vladimir Lenin's observation that the capitalists will sell the rope to hang themselves — a transaction now facilitated by the pro-corporate actions of McCain's own Republican party.

eXcellente360   February 23rd, 2008 11:55 am ET

"McCain hoping Castro dies"

That statement alone is reason not to vote for the fella,..Wishing and hoping death on anyone is something I don't teach my kids,.why should I let the next President?

NO is the BUZZ WORD!

William Pruett   February 23rd, 2008 11:56 am ET

I am sorry! John Mccain is not a conservative, and with comments like this I have to question other things as well. You don't reach out to Evangelicals, by making comments about hoping someone dies soon. I hope a third party candadate shows up soon, because we have no one to vote for at this point.

William Pruett
Bluefield, Va.

Tanya   February 23rd, 2008 11:58 am ET

Thats so diplomatic McCain…. Way to go….

Alison, FL   February 23rd, 2008 11:58 am ET

Mean McCain! That's not very nice! I mean I know that there isn't much love for Castro but my goodness! One should never wish for someone's death considering how old McCain is, he should choose his words wisely.

Karen   February 23rd, 2008 11:59 am ET

Won't he be a great leader.

Sherry Doggett   February 23rd, 2008 11:59 am ET

To wish someone dead is as evil as Castro has been to the Cuban people. Mean spirited political comments turn me off to any candidate.

Curtis   February 23rd, 2008 11:59 am ET

If that is an example of the sort of diplomacy we can expect from a McCain presidency — it would be a disaster to elect him. While one can certainly hold that hope, to speak it aloud to the world serves no purpose at all but to make us look bad in several different ways. A more appropriate response would have been to say something along the lines of 'hoping a new day is dawning for the Cuban people' or something.

AJP,Richardson, TX   February 23rd, 2008 11:59 am ET

I was taught as a young man never to wish anyone dead.

It seems as though John McCain is as evil as Castro in wishing such a thing on another human being.

Apparently the time McCain spent in a prision camp did nothing for hos soul.

I have always told my friends the Republican party is the party of evil.

John Mcain has not let me down in my blief by his absurd statement.

Igor   February 23rd, 2008 12:00 pm ET

That comment is jsut ediculous from McCain and shows he is not the right person to lead this country. A person just doesnt wish death upon another person no mather who they are.

JTGeorge   February 23rd, 2008 12:00 pm ET

John McCain is simply the antithesis of so called " family values".
Multiple marriages, wishing harm and or death on fellow human beings, not duirng the time of war, but simply because of differences in philosophy and oh yes, conitnued lies and political shenanigans as an elected official. McCain is simply no better than the other pond scum he tends to float with on the right side of the aisle.

Scott from Freehold   February 23rd, 2008 12:00 pm ET

Yes, Castro has been a terrible tyrant that has ruined Cuba. His country will be better off without him. However, this kind of talk is typical cowboy, tough talk that has been Bush's style. It is not presidential, and not in our nation's best interests.

michael   February 23rd, 2008 12:01 pm ET

Nice Headline CNN, no bias here I am sure…
I am sure McCain said this remark tongue in cheek, given the Marx reference, but your headline comes across as him being bloodthirsty. We get it, you would rather have Obama Hussein Barrack or HRC than him as president. So be it, but please try to pretend to be fair and objective in the mean time.

Michael   February 23rd, 2008 12:04 pm ET

That's not a cool way to get elected.

Mike, Birmingham AL   February 23rd, 2008 12:05 pm ET

What an incredible jerk!

First it was him singing "bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran", and now he's joking about hoping a world leader dies.

Castro might not be the best guy in the world, but if McCain wants to look more presidential he should learn to use a little tact.

Just the Facts   February 23rd, 2008 12:05 pm ET

This man is kind of tasteless and runs his mouth too much.

Micahel Guinn, Ventura, CA   February 23rd, 2008 12:05 pm ET

This is an almost unbelievable statement by someone running for the Nation's highest office. I hope people are listening!

Debbie   February 23rd, 2008 12:06 pm ET

It isn't surprising that a hot-headed narrow-minded person like McCain would say such an insensitive thing.
He sounds like Cowboy Bush…I sure don't want more of that…

Debbie   February 23rd, 2008 12:06 pm ET

McCain doesn't sound like a presidential candidate because he hasn't learned how to be presidential. Our country needs allies, not enemies and hoping people die isn't a way to improve diplomatic relations. Sounds like President Bush, by making the world hate us, we are doing so well. (sarcasm). Diplomacy is an art, and it sounds like McCain needs to go back to school…he must have played hookey that day.

Tom Wittmann   February 23rd, 2008 12:06 pm ET

This is a repetition correcting the typos. Sorry

HOW ABOUT CHAVEZ ??

He is democracially elected, accepted defeat in a plebiscite, there are
no political prisoners, the press is ultra-free competing who insults him more.
Only he is very vocal against the US !!

And he has great influence on FIDEL CASTRO !! Could he be a vehicle to change Cuba and in the process, the poor US relations with the Chavez-friendly regimes in South America would be mended ??

But of course, the State Department must ged rid of the influence of the extremist-Miami-Cuban, whose demonizing of Chavez was and is a big factor in Chavez atitude in front of the US

TOM

Francis   February 23rd, 2008 12:07 pm ET

Never wish your fellow human being evil no matter how poisonous they may be. How about if people wish you the same? After al, your ages are not far apart………………….

VM   February 23rd, 2008 12:08 pm ET

Horrible thing to say about another human being.

horrible   February 23rd, 2008 12:08 pm ET

This has got to be the worst nominee for the Republicans. I mean, Fidal Castro did bad, but you should never wish for someone to die, no matter how bad a person they really are. And this could be our next president…horrible.

Kyle Neubauer   February 23rd, 2008 12:08 pm ET

It is not difficult to see Senator McCain's comments as blatant pandering for the Cuban-American vote, which not surprisingly, is crucial for the GOP. This tasteless, cowboy rhetoric is what contributes to worldwide resentment of the US Government and its policies. The debacle in Iraq (that McCain helped get us into and proposes to continue indefinitely if elected) is a good example of what happens when the United States insists on choosing–and sometimes removing–the leader of a soverign nation. It is hypocritical that McCain and our government supports dictators when it serves US interests (the likes of Pinochet, Batista, Noriega, and Saddam Hussein, to name a few), while railing against others. Take note Senator: Castro has proven his longevitiy, and you may actually have the opportunity to meet Karl Marx before he does.

ANDY   February 23rd, 2008 12:08 pm ET

Wishing Castro to die is despicable especially coming from a presidential candidate. No matter you much you hate the other side a respectul figure like McCain should never wish another human being to die…

Jim   February 23rd, 2008 12:08 pm ET

McCain is very irrational and a hot head. We cannot afford to have another 'king' like Bush who makes decisions without thik of consequences. McCain touts he will bomb Iran and he wants our troops to stay 100+ year sin Iraq….

There is no doubt we have failed in Iraq and its simply costing us money and precious lives. Another war with Iran is unacceptable and with McCain incharge it will probably happen.

C'on people didn't we have enough of crazy people in the white house, its time we have a decent president who cares about the average american and is a bron leader.

Obama '08

Javier   February 23rd, 2008 12:09 pm ET

Nice! This is just what we need.

An angry, senile old man running this country. How worse can things get??

James Izzard   February 23rd, 2008 12:09 pm ET

Castro looks more healthy than John McCain.

Where is the story about Paxson busting McCain on the lobbygate?

chris-seattle   February 23rd, 2008 12:09 pm ET

does mccain also call himself a christian. can you imagine jesus saying he hoped someone died shortly. why are these people always so hypocritical? when are the christian voters going to wake up and vote democratic?

the modern use of the word conservative is just a code word for selfish.

Steve Callan, Palo Cedro, CA   February 23rd, 2008 12:10 pm ET

McCain is a semi-senile idiot. What ever his private feelings are, he should not be saying stupid things like that. I thought Bush was dumb!

James of VA   February 23rd, 2008 12:11 pm ET

You can fault some of John McCain's politics if you want, but the guy sure does speak his mind.

Bob   February 23rd, 2008 12:12 pm ET

This guy has definitely lost it!!

David   February 23rd, 2008 12:12 pm ET

McCain needs to mellow out. Somebody grab him a drink.

MJ   February 23rd, 2008 12:13 pm ET

I am a Catholic and I would be afraid to wish another human being would die.

I have no feelings for Castro since he caused so many people so much trouble; however, we are better than he is.

I believe God has a way of evening out things. McCain has had cancer a few times; so, he should not be wishing death on another human being.

McCain, The world is looking at you. You couldn't pay Huckabee to say such a thing.

Richard Glencoe IL   February 23rd, 2008 12:14 pm ET

In 2000, although an avowed Democrat, I would have voted for McCain. But, in 2008 I think this man is dangerous and quite possibly mentally unbalanced. Who in their right mind would wish someone dead! I know many of us think like that but who in their right mind would say that aloud or even worse for attribution to the national media?
The 2008 McCain makes Barry Goldwater sound like a Quaker. God help us if this lunatic McCain is elected to the presidency and has control over our nuclear arsenal. Rational Republicans will come to see this man as a throw-away candidate. Pity the poor Republican Party during this election cycle.

Betty   February 23rd, 2008 12:14 pm ET

Geez-a-loo McCain, you can not like the guy, but to say "I hope he dies" is kind of stupid.

tandra   February 23rd, 2008 12:15 pm ET

Boy, that's just the right thing for a proclaimed christian to say about anyone.

ben   February 23rd, 2008 12:18 pm ET

What terrible thing to say.
Does this man who is against stem cell research because every one has the right to life, now says he hopes someone dies.
That is bad as Falwel saying on Lary King live" We have to go over and kill them before they come over and kill us."
Are we to suppose that anybody we don't like should be dead?
Believe it or not, there are many Cubans who adore Castro.
What a ridiculous thing to say for a politician when he also says if things get better in Cuba we might negociate with them. Statements like that won't help make things better.

Bill   February 23rd, 2008 12:18 pm ET

I would expect any presidential candidate to be a little more sincere and deferential to life itself. We should not 'hope' anyone to die, no matter how much their politics disagree from us. I think this is a clear sign of the schoolyard bully mentality that McCain will bring to the White House.

Daniel W. Baluka   February 23rd, 2008 12:18 pm ET

John McCain's remark was out of line not only as a Presidential candidate, but as a human being. God has a time and a place for each of us to leave our earthly abode.

John M   February 23rd, 2008 12:18 pm ET

Can we be any more unpresidential?

bendo   February 23rd, 2008 12:20 pm ET

wow, its one thing to pander to the cubans in miami and be venomately opposed to castro, but to wish a person to die is plain cold and this man mccain is not worthy of the office he seeks.

Barry Newman   February 23rd, 2008 12:20 pm ET

Castro is a real piece of work. He thinks that anyone besides himself thinks he is an important person in the world today. He is not. He lied to the world to get money for his cause. Who remembers him on the Jack Parr show. He then came out as a Commie. He has been worse on Cuba than when they had the dictator in power. No one has much food,no medicine, cars that are falling apart. No products to sell and no one who wants to buy the few things that they have. So it would be a shame for someone to take over with his mentality. They need someone who will make sure the population of Cuba is taken care of in a proper manor. Maybe then the US and other people will lower the tarifs and the poor people of Cuba can finally breath a breath of fresh air.

Brandon   February 23rd, 2008 12:22 pm ET

CNN I love how you have to explain to your readers who Karl Marx is!

mike   February 23rd, 2008 12:23 pm ET

McCain should not say this in such way. I guess that may have something to do with McCain being in the military once… Should I hope McCain to die soon just because I did not like McCain or simply because McCain might have killed many while he was in the military, specially in Vietnam?

Christian, Tampa FL   February 23rd, 2008 12:26 pm ET

We can't afford to have a President who has an attitude like that. It's not moral or acceptable to wish death on someone just because they're a bad person. Jesus would NOT approve!

With the foreign policy attitude that John McCain has, electing him would be a disaster for America.

Belle   February 23rd, 2008 12:26 pm ET

Like Robertson, Jesus would be proud of these men who hope those
who are their enemies would die.
What were those words Jesus spoke many years ago?
Oh yeah,,,,,,
Love your enemy.
Just words, right?

.

LKern   February 23rd, 2008 12:27 pm ET

Yep, wishing another human being dead. The Mantra of the republican party.
"Hey John, you have two calls waiting. Those family values people and Jesus. Which one you want first?"

Jorge L. Gonzalez   February 23rd, 2008 12:29 pm ET

I completely agree with McCain's statement.

Frances   February 23rd, 2008 12:30 pm ET

How low does some one need to go to make themselves look better?
How can one human being wish another to die and call themselves a Christian? I will not be voting Republican this time around.

Matt   February 23rd, 2008 12:30 pm ET

One of the reasons why I hate McCain. His arrogance and hatred towards some other nations aren't negotiable and stupid. If he were president we'd never have a chance at negotiating with countries like Cuba and Russia because they won't bow down to him, and they shouldn't have to.

manuel de jesus   February 23rd, 2008 12:31 pm ET

MR.MCCAIN, FIDEL CASTRO IS BETTER PERSON,THAN YOU, FOR NOT WISHING ANYBODY TO DIE (HOW MANY KIDS,MANS,AND WOMENS,,MR MCCAIM ,KILLED IN VIETNAM? HIS NAME SAYED CAIN,CAIN, WHO WAS CAIN,, DO YOU KNOW?

sainath reddivari   February 23rd, 2008 12:34 pm ET

I respect Senator McCain for his service and sacrifice to this country. Howevr, it is not in good taste to wish for the death of another human being (such as Fidel Castro) no matter how evil he is in Senator's opinion. Also, as the old saying goes, "wishes are like boomrangs, as such it is good to wish good even for your worst enemies.

MORE OF THE SAME   February 23rd, 2008 12:35 pm ET

YES THAT SOUNDS VERY PRESIDENTIAL. HE HAS THE BUSH MENTALITY. I'M BEHIND WHOEVER THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE IS. I URGE ALL HILLARY/OBAMA SUPPORTERS TO DO THE SAME.

Janel, St. Paul, MN   February 23rd, 2008 12:36 pm ET

McCain's insensitive, unChristian comment will certainly draw votes from the conservatives.

r.kaushal rao   February 23rd, 2008 12:36 pm ET

It is most disgusting comment from a front runner in US presidential
race , the leader who would be future president such a remarks are poor in taste not befetting the leader who aspires for the top job in the world .

Linda   February 23rd, 2008 12:36 pm ET

That remark makes me feel very uncomfortable with putting McCain in charge of our foreign policy. We don't need another president who speaks impulsively. We need a leader.

Charie Dukous   February 23rd, 2008 12:36 pm ET

it shows how evil McCain is by wishing death on another human even if he was the dictator of Cuba.

Frank   February 23rd, 2008 12:40 pm ET

Wow….how morbid of McCain.

Vote Obama

T. Los angeles   February 23rd, 2008 12:41 pm ET

I am very dispointed from MCain for his words. We never wish someone dies.

KC in NC   February 23rd, 2008 12:41 pm ET

Hoping someone to die soon is a little over the top. The US should have ceased sanctions in Cuba a very, very long time ago - they ceased being a threat almost thirty years ago. To push Cuba toward Chavez is a mistake, we need to have open relations with country and have needed to for many years. Cuba is just another example of archaic US policy needing change.

Boomer for Barak Obama   February 23rd, 2008 12:41 pm ET

…"bomb, bomb, bomb Iran"…John McCain

Hamas shout "Death to America," McCain shours "Death to Castro!"

Chris O.   February 23rd, 2008 12:43 pm ET

Ah, the mark of true presidential material. Making asinine off-the-cuff remarks about other world leaders.

…sad what the senile John McCain has become.

Chris

Juan Grain   February 23rd, 2008 12:44 pm ET

You can tell a tree by it's fruit. If a tree puts out good fruit then it is a healthy tree and one to be cultivated. If a tree puts out fruit that is sick then the tree is sick. And you know the rest…

RP   February 23rd, 2008 12:44 pm ET

Do we really want someone like this to have control over nuclear weapons? This guy is scary.

tammi   February 23rd, 2008 12:45 pm ET

That's the most arrogant and irresponsible statement I've heard in awhile. What a shame, coming from someone who hopes to be president. Is that what you'll do to everyone in the world that you don't like? Wish them death, or better yet, kill them yourself? Shame on you for that statement and I hope someone calls you out on it.

Native   February 23rd, 2008 12:45 pm ET

Now that's walking the true Christian talk. Pay attention folks. Its stuff like this that bring the lies and hypocrisy to the forefront in an election year.

I do not believe these types of remarks are appropriate for a world leader to be making. Great example. Just the kind of hatred making this world more intolerant of each other.

Walk the talk, or shut up and go home.

John Stevens   February 23rd, 2008 12:45 pm ET

No Christian should hope for the death of an individual human being. I hope the 'Christian' right states that clearly - but I will not hold my breath.

You'd better watch out, McCain. Wishing ill of people can backfire. Maybe you'll be there with Marx to greet Fidel. You're not so perfect, you know.

Frank-Iowa   February 23rd, 2008 12:47 pm ET

Better be careful what you wish for, John Boy. Not getting any younger yourself!!!!!!!!! God forbid if you get in for president; might as well have Shrub for a third term!!!!!!!!!!

SB   February 23rd, 2008 12:47 pm ET

How could anyone say something like that? He's disturbing!

Shane   February 23rd, 2008 12:48 pm ET

Just another day in the life of a hate-filled, bigoted, no common sense having, bad judgment using Republican. And this is the nominee for the republican party? A man who actually wishes death on another human being? And this is the "pro-life" party? The right wing has always been a joke. Their value comes from distortions and lies. Please barack win back the white house! What happened to the "moral values"?

Leave him alone guys, he's really old, and sometimes he doesn't know what he's talking about. Let him mow down on his lays potato chips.

Amorehouseman   February 23rd, 2008 12:48 pm ET

Just an example of what is not only in his subconscious mind, but in his conscious mind as well. What a mean and hateful way to be…yet, still run for president. Thanks for showing your true colors McCain! I knew it was in you all along!

Charlotte Botkin   February 23rd, 2008 12:49 pm ET

I would think Fidel Castro's fate would be in the hands of God and not John McCain. I will keep both these men in my prayers. This does not mean I believe in each persons political views; just respect them as God's creatures (great or small).

Ken   February 23rd, 2008 12:49 pm ET

I vote for McCain as our 51st state, out in space somewhere. We sure do not need anyone like in the whit house!

Craig G.   February 23rd, 2008 12:50 pm ET

I couldn't agree more. McCain's comment is right on.

Tom   February 23rd, 2008 12:50 pm ET

McCain isn't the first proclaimed Christian to be bloodthirsty and cruel. Seems that Bush shows the same face. So do the neo-Cons.

D. Ashley   February 23rd, 2008 12:50 pm ET

John isn't exactly a "spring chicken" himself. He doesn't look or act like a healthy individual, so if I were him, I wouldn't be wishing death upon anyone else.

Shane   February 23rd, 2008 12:51 pm ET

And just to think people threw a fit when michelle obama mader her "proud of america" remark. with americans like John Mccain saying evil things like this, why should anyone be proud of this nation?
then again they are "just words" right. this presidential race is turning into a big joke with all the stupid stuff being said on a regular basis. and these are our "leaders"? God help us all.

Charlotte   February 23rd, 2008 12:51 pm ET

I would think Fidel Castro's fate would be in the hands of God and not John McCains.

Like most, I am not a big fan of dictators like Castro. But What a disgusting thing to say for Mr. McCain. My respect for this senator dropped big time. I was in disbelief that he could say something like this.

Will   February 23rd, 2008 12:51 pm ET

Hey Big Mac..Be careful what you wish for.. You are not exactly young either…May be we can place a bet to see who hits the bucket first…Goodluck!

M Johnson   February 23rd, 2008 12:51 pm ET

McCain is a mean, old man.
