Hillary and Bill Clinton worked on George McGovern's 1972 campaign in Texas before they wed in 1975.
Hillary and Bill Clinton worked on George McGovern's 1972 campaign in Texas before they wed in 1975.

AUSTIN, Texas (CNN) – Garry Mauro will never forget that night in 1972 when he says Bill Clinton and Hillary Rodham ignored the post-election party surrounding them, instead preferring to huddle in a corner and talk about changing the future.

The young then-unmarried couple, attending Yale Law, weren't interested in letting off steam with their Democratic colleagues in Austin, Texas, according to Mauro, who's now a strategist with Sen. Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign.

The three were among a group of Young Turk Democrats working that summer to register voters in Texas. The Clintons had just started dating, said Mauro, who years later became Texas land commissioner. "They obviously had a lot of respect for each other, and they would spend hours talking to each other."

"They obviously had a lot of respect for each other, and they would spend hours talking to each other." Can't imagine how Jennifer Flowers, Paula Jones, Kathleen Willy and other played into that respect.

SAME LIE THEN. SAME LIES NOW. VOTING FOR HILLARY ONLY SAYS WE ARE STUPID. WE KNOW HER RECORD, AND IT'S BAD. ITS TRUE SHE HAS THE MOST EXPERIENCE, AT DOING WHAT IS BAD FOR THIS COUNTRY. WEE ALL LIVE HERE.

Dylan   February 29th, 2008 7:20 pm ET

I agree with Gretchen. It has been a long time since I have seen the media say anything nice about Sen. Clinton. It's about time the media plugs away at Obama, before the Republicans get ahold of him and tear him in two. Obama won't beat McCain. Period. It would be Experience Vs. Inexperience. Only the Clintons have a track record in the last 30 years of beating the Republicans. No one else has. And yet all the media can say is that they think Obama would go better against McCain than Hillary. Now that's just nonsense!

She loves Texas so much, it's been such a great place to her over the years…… Then why is she talking about a lawsuit there today?

What a sore loser she is.

She's been trying to pull so many cheap tricks lately, because she knows her dream is slipping away. That is certainly not a trait I want in my president. I've had enough character flaws in a president the last seven years.

She needs to give it up already, its starting to make the democratic party look bad.

This article is a textbook example of yellow journalism.

As democrats we need each others support so whether the two democratic candidates agree to disagree they should remember the independent candidate may get a sail through this time round because he is a lone he is not involved in any hate politics but talking about facts. People can believe anything you tell them as long as you know how to keep the flock they will obey and trust you,

TO ALL THE DEMOCRAPS:
Wake up people. Look at our economy, the value of the dollar and the loss of jobs. Gas, energy, food, education, and medical care are all going up as fast as the value of our dollar is going down. It is vital for us to look past all of the rhetoric and look at the plans of these candidates. Which candidate has brought forth the most workable plans that will help our economy? In my opinion, that is Senator Clinton. I feel she has more well-thought-out plans than the others. She certainly has tried to address more of the issues that we face than any other candidate.

it is precisely their presumptuous arrogance to think they can change everybody else's future without asking for guidance that turns many people off about these two. Change yourown bad selves but leave us alone. It does _not_take a village or a radical social agenda to do most things worth doing.

I especially urge every man from TX, OH, PA, RI and other states, to seriously consider voting for Hillary. Let us bring the CLINTON MAGIC back.

Matt Williams   February 29th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

This is not particularly relevant to this article, but I just watched President Bill Clinton address the issue of experience, relating it to Magic Johnson's basketball metaphor. Magic said that experience gave him the ability to deal with pressure situations….yeah, well, Magic Johnson also won the NBA title his rookie season without the help of Kareem Abdul Jabbar (due to injury), so he was born to handle pressure situations…the same way Barack Obama will be able to handle pressure situations without decades of experience in Washington.

this picture paints a thousand words for me! whatever you say about Bill Clinton, he loves Hillary and there is nothing the media or her detractors can do or say about that! that is the reason why Bill is so fierce in fighting for her. I would do exactly the same to fight for my family!!!

Go Hillary Rodham Clinton in 2008!!!

C.H., Texas   February 29th, 2008 4:42 pm ET

Go Hillary! I already voted for you. And I will do it again after the polls have closed down here in South Texas (Rio Grande Valley). The Obama campaign should be ashamed of themselves for going after the young naive voter's. At the end of the day they go back to their parent's home who are the one's paying for the all the bills! Even my 15yr old son has more common sense than all those people that are buying into the Obama hype. He told me "Right now I see what you and my dad are going through trying to make ends meet. I don't understand how all these people can trust someone with no experience to run this country. When I get my college degree, a good paying job, start paying my OWN bills (house, car, light, gas, etc) and if I'm married with kids then I will be ready to vote, I will be walking in your all's shoes. Right now I just want to enjoy being young". God bless my son's heart, I just wish more of the young kids would open their eyes and think like my son. May God bless Hillary!

The arcticle says:

"in 1972 Bill Clinton and Hillary Rodham ignored the post-election party surrounding them, instead preferring to huddle in a corner and talk about changing the future."

At that time in 1972, I was "huddled around a hydraulic winch control" in a CH-53D Sea Stallion sweeping mines in Haiphong Harbor (North Vietnam for those you Berkeley) so that our POWs (including John McCain) could come home. Is this article supposed to impress me with the length of time the Clintons have been around? Hey, Hillary, I want John McCain to answer that 3Am Phone call, not you or Obama, or any democrat for that matter.

Did Bill realize in 2004 that he would be campaigning for Barack Obama?

"One of Clinton's laws of politics is this: If one candidate's trying to scare you, and the other one's trying to get you to think; if one candidate's appealing to your fears, and the other one's appealing to your hopes; you better vote for the person who wants you to think and hope."

I'm sure she started out sincere…but along the way, she lost her soul…she became a cold and bitter and driven by a need to feed her ego, a craving for power, and starved for attention.

At some point she determined her own needs outweighed the needs of the many.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   February 29th, 2008 4:00 pm ET

Hillary's "I and I and I" speeches are getting pretty darn boring. They reminded me of a seminar where the speaker used the "I" so much I starting laughing and those around me asked, we must have been thinking the same thing. And yes we were, that same thing was since "I" can do this and "I" can do that, then why are we sitting here listening to you, go it alone. Vote Obama.

ChicoSez   February 29th, 2008 3:59 pm ET

How will the Obamabots spin this story negatively? The Clinton's have been working for the good of the party for over 40 years and they get trashed by a bunch of newbes and first time voters. My first campaign was for Gen McCarthy in '68 and I've been an active Dem ever since but because of the terrible things said about the entire Clinton family by the Obama backers, I'll be staying home if Obama gets the nomination. No donations, no volunteering and no downtickets votes. You should have thought about needing the Hillary supporters, about 40-51% of the dem party, before you were so bleeding rude to us. Hillary in 2012

Amazing to me that Clinton fans can claim media bias against her with this type of puff piece. Yes, the media asks her tough questions some times. They ask Obama tough questions too. Lets see Hillary answer that question in South Carolina about Bill being the first "black" president.
Fairness in the media, okay, I am all for it. Stop calling Hillary cold and shrill and lets have a story about how Obama has spent decades making actual differences in peoples lives after their jobs are shipped overseas. While Hillary has been working on Campaigns and FAILED health care initiatives, Obama has been working hard to bring needed changes. Job centers to neighborhoods that need them, health care to children and veterans.

Look, Hillary Clinton is not an overnight wonder. She is a battle tested fighter that has been involved in helping Americans for 35 years. I am excited about CHANGE in America, but I also know it will take a fighter to bring about the Change American want and deserve.

Chuck in Oregon   February 29th, 2008 3:54 pm ET

Hmmm, who was tested. There is a big difference between Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton. Bill was a great speaker, who managed to reach the American People, where as Hillary appears to be the exact opposite. If this were a Bill Clinton vs Barack Obama, the outcome may be different. Thankfully we will not have to experience that.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHaha, ohh, boy that was funny. That is the funniest thing I've ever read. Seriously, if you really believe that, you should vote for Hillary. There would just be no convincing you otherwise ever.

Excuses and egos, just like the woman herself.

Laurence "Keeping it real"   February 29th, 2008 3:46 pm ET

Barack Obama will defeat two presidents and two senators to take the White House. For the love of me I cannot understand why CNN (Clinton News Network) oh, Ianswered my own question. That's why they continue ti give Bill Clinton more air time then Barack Obama who by the way is running for office and Bill Clinton. Candy Crowley should be getting quite a kick out of all the attention the Clinton campaign gets as oppoesd to Baracks.

Why it is that everybody is trying to make everyone believe that these are the only two living people that cares about America?

Years and years of experience. Hillary is the original and Obama is the copy.

Here is an interview from CNN of Obama:

From Schneider's report on the 4 p.m. ET hour of the March 28 edition of The Situation Room:

SCHNEIDER: When an anti-Hillary Clinton ad turned up on YouTube, Obama told Larry King –

OBAMA [video clip]: It's not something that we had anything to do with or were aware of, and, frankly, given what it looks like, we don't have the technical capacity to create something like that.

SCHNEIDER: But the ad was made by a political operative working for a firm hired by the Obama campaign. And the technical requirements were not all that great.
