A White House aide has resigned after admitting to plagiarism.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – A senior White House official, Tim Goeglein, has resigned after he admitted copying large sections of an essay he wrote for a newspaper in Fort Wayne, Ind., the White House confirmed Friday.

"Today, Tim accepted responsibility for the columns published under his name in his local newspaper, and has apologized for not upholding the standards expected by the President," the White House said in a written statement. "The President was disappointed to learn of the matter, and he was saddened for Tim and his family. He has long appreciated Tim's service, and he knows him to be a good person who is committed to his country.

"President Bush accepted Tim's resignation today."

In an e-mail to The News-Sentinel, Goeglein, special assistant to the president and deputy director of public liaison, apologizes, saying, "It is true. I am entirely at fault. It was wrong of me. There are no excuses."

Goeglein said he has reached out to the author, Jeffery Hart, whose 1998 writings in the Dartmouth Review he copied nearly verbatim. "I have written to Jeff to apologize, and do so categorically and without exception," he says.

Are they KIDDING!!!!! With ALL of the Crimes committed by this administration they pick THIS guy to throw to the wolves???

Again, ARE THEY KIDDING!!!????

gerry Bee   February 29th, 2008 7:04 pm ET

Hiliary will turn the tables against Obama. She will ask him with all the information concerning Iraq how could you not have voted for the war in Iraq. It was not a decision she made litely. She knew all the reasons against the war in Iraq that Obama knew and then some. She also had a personal bias against any military action. Her question will be Senator Obama given all the information we were given, in these times of terrorism How could you not have voted for the war in Iraq?
The mark of a leader is the ability to make a decision against everything that you believe in because it is the right thing to do.
Senator Obama will be in effective as a leader because he has demonstrated and inability to make a tough decision.

Manuel TX   February 29th, 2008 7:07 pm ET

It's only acceptable if it's an Obama campaign speech. :)

Sue   February 29th, 2008 7:08 pm ET

Heck, he doesn't need to resign. This is minor compared to the rest of the things that other WH staff have committed. How about: outing a CIA operative, having secret meetings (on our dime) with oil execs, wiretapping, waterboarding, starting a war with lies, throwing our money out without any accounting or giving no-bid contracts to their cronies. This is minor. Wonder why CNN doesn't pound more on these items rather than glossing over them? Guess they think that America has been dumbed down.

jaz   February 29th, 2008 7:09 pm ET

maybe that could teach obama something

Grif   February 29th, 2008 7:11 pm ET

Now that's a much better Camera used, or at least a better Photographer.

Byron in CA   February 29th, 2008 7:19 pm ET

He took responsibility for his actions and I respect that. What he did is wrong and he deserves to lose his job. Still I'd have a few more questions starting with why he did such a dumb thing and what else would you like to confess at this point?

Darth HUSSEIN Vadik, CA   February 29th, 2008 7:19 pm ET

Republicans….

ED   February 29th, 2008 7:25 pm ET

Is there any aspect of this white house that has been performed with honor ,truth and integrity. George Bush stated that he would bring HONOR ANDTRUST TO THIS WHITE HOUSE. Apparently his spelling is as bad as his vocabulary. He mispelled his interpretation by using the term honest in place of dishonest and trust in place of mistrust. America will not be surprised by any future questionable decision or wrong doing that comes from this Administration.

Trev   February 29th, 2008 7:29 pm ET

Wow, a plagiarist admists responsibility and resigns. I respect Obama. However, I believe that he should admit that copying others work is, at the very least, a bad thing. And before the Hillary haters (which is unfortunately an accurate term) start their collective chant, I want you to at least think about how you would respond if Hillary did the same thing. Don't pull out that Edwards stuff either. We are going to be fine is a line that has been spoken by lots of people. And "yes we can" that is not an Obama or a Clinton original.

Janet, Missouri   February 29th, 2008 7:31 pm ET

Except for Colin Powell, George W. has surrounded himself with the most incompetent, corrupt, and untrustworthy people. I am not surprised since he all but stole the election in 2004. He really haas ruined the reputation of the Republican party and the office of the President

KW   February 29th, 2008 7:34 pm ET

Now where have I heard that word "PLAGIARISM" lately?

sarah   February 29th, 2008 7:41 pm ET

See how easy that is obama?

sga   February 29th, 2008 7:48 pm ET

Why is Obama not doing the same thing, withdrawing from the race because of his plagerism. Isn't he for stepping up and taking a higher road. He also has copied Hillary Clinton so many times
as well as many different speeches. USA can not afford a president that plaerises others and has no problem with this, It is good to see integrrty approach in this matter, thanku.

Vig   February 29th, 2008 7:55 pm ET

The Bush adminstration is so corrupt that as his presidency FINALLY ends, you will be hearing more of these types of stories and they will damage McCain's chances to be elected

Sarah   February 29th, 2008 7:55 pm ET

While such news is sad, it only highlights the need for those in positions of influence to have integrity. I would encourage those evaluating candidates for President to consider this.

Lucas, Nashville TN   February 29th, 2008 7:56 pm ET

At least SOMEONE in the White House is literate enough to steal words from a page.

paul   February 29th, 2008 7:58 pm ET

hillary is not making sense here. her giving the authority for iraq war does not make her superior in security issue to obama.

Charlotte   February 29th, 2008 7:58 pm ET

Maybe he can get his job back if Obama wins. Word for word is plagerism. Oh well, there just words right? By the way Obama did not vote for the war in Iraq, or much of anything else.

Grif   February 29th, 2008 7:59 pm ET

Does anybody really know the meaning, of : "Official Secrets",

Who should, and who shouldn't be allowed to have control, of such?

Confidential Material??? WHY IS IT PEOPLE DON'T LOOK, BEFORE THEY LEAP !!

Lose a Country! Lose everything…. Who would you trust?

Dan   February 29th, 2008 8:02 pm ET

Wayne   February 29th, 2008 8:06 pm ET

OBAMA CAMPAIGN?

OBAMA IS BUSH LITE

Anonymous   February 29th, 2008 8:17 pm ET

Should not Obama also admit he plagiarized the MA Governor.

Jacob   February 29th, 2008 8:20 pm ET

To all the Hillary supporting fools:

Here's the definition of plagiarism

Plagiarism -1. the unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work.

Key word UNAUTHORIZED. If the original speaker/author gives you permission it isn't plagiarized. Please retake 9th grade English. Oh wait, educated people already vote for Obama.

bimmer   February 29th, 2008 8:22 pm ET

It is time Obama also confesses to plagiarizing others.

More than words have been stolen   February 29th, 2008 8:32 pm ET

I hope he really means what he is saying in his apology, but who is Hillary asking every time she "borrows" from others? Her closing speech to applause ( Though I don't believe was intended for her) in TX. debate, campaign ads, interviews and rallies

Others have stolen more than words. But what really is the clincher is this, ."President Bush accepted his resignation."
I dare to say that I am convinced that our president & vice might be getting some illegal kick backs every time we pay for gas and other natural resources. It hasn't been proven, but, um it sure makes me wonder why Congress has not thought the same and gotten off their behinds to at least fully investigate these two Slick Willies.

I have a problem with these two leaving office with their heads up and pockets full of poor people's money.

kenny   February 29th, 2008 8:34 pm ET

are you kidding me, hilary hasn't plagerized? she ripped off edwards a couple of weeks ago. she is acting like a republican right now. if the rules don't fit our plan, let's change the rules. the rules worked for her husband when he won texas. desparatiion is so ugly….

Rebecca - Fresno, CA   February 29th, 2008 8:35 pm ET

sga… I thihk the news media clearly pointed out that Hillary did exaclty the same thing you called "plagiarism" in a speech a day after the debate in which she made her nasty remark to Sen. Obama…..except Hillary's lines were lifted from a speech by John Edwards and another from a speech given by her husband. Geez…..is this the stuff that determines your vote??? What about the issues????

Mike   February 29th, 2008 8:44 pm ET

COMMON ….. WAKE UP OBAMA…YOU YELL ABOUT DECISION IN IRAQ WAR AND WHAT ALL WE KNOW ARE YOU EVEN NOT BORN YET IN A SENATE. PLEASE SHUT YOUR MOUTH UP !!! UNLESS YOU CAN PROVE THAT YOU REALLY AGAINST THE IRAQ WAR AT THAT TIME.
i STILL REMEMBER MAJORITY OF US PEOPLE AGREE THE WAR, WE SHOULDN'T LAME SOME ONE WHEN WE LOOSE THE WAR.

Independent, NC   February 29th, 2008 8:53 pm ET

sga, If you are stating that Hillary has used only her words and no others, you have definitely missed the better part of this campaign. Hillary is guilty of plagiarism as well. I can't begin to quote all of the various times that she has been caught sighting others words. Including her most touching closing statements in the Texas debates. If you are going to criticize, try doing it in an area that your candidate is not guilty herself.

Barack walks up to the mic…and says,

"If one candidate’s trying to scare you and the other one’s trying to get you to think, if one candidate’s appealing to your fears and the other one’s appealing to your hopes, you better vote for the person who wants you to think and hope."

Then says,

"Just so I don't get called a plagiarist, I want you to know those words aren't mine. They are the words of Bill Clinton.”

Yes…Bill Clinton’s words, said to a crowd in Philadelphia on October 25, 2004.

HA!

Jacob:

Plagiarism is the practice of claiming or implying original authorship of (or incorporating material from) someone else's written or creative work, in whole or in part, into one's own without adequate acknowledgement.

Hmmmm nothing here about authorized or unauthorized. I am a published author and can tell you that you have to give credit whether you are authorized or not.

The next time you decided to call Hillary supporters "fools" and uneducated, remember that roughtly half of the democratic electorate supports her. Not a very smart strategic move to call them all idiots now is it?

Have a great weekend!

Hillary 08 (without the hate)

I AM   February 29th, 2008 9:31 pm ET

This is not the 1st time. You just caught.

This is different from what Obama speaks. You, the media, wants to tongue-tie him on everyday sayings. We cut and dice daily in the American version of the English language.

Stealing thoughts is not limited to you. Matter of fact, not all I have written comes back to me or is posted. Who is the trash monitor. OOPS!!!!

Obama in 2008

Trev   February 29th, 2008 9:41 pm ET

If you are a real undecided personal reading this blog, go and look at the posts. Count how many Obama supporters are disrespectful to Clinton supporters (as opposed to Clinton herself). Then count the number of Clinton supporters who are being disrespectful to Obama supporters (as opposed to Obama himself). We can learn a lot about a potential Obama presidency by looking at his supporters.

K Fergus   February 29th, 2008 9:44 pm ET

Wow! Imagine a poor White House staffer having to resign over plagiarism!! Such a crime!! Where is the logic in this? The President and his V.P. and others in his administration have clearly violated constitutional laws, lied to the people to invade another country under false pretenses, and caused the death of many Amercians and Iraqis. Yet, they have neither resigned nor have they been impeached (as they should be) for their actions. Is this the new brand of American justice??

Oh wait, I forgot, he wasn't upholding the standards of the president. I guess it would have been better had he fabricated his words instead of just copied them. That would clearly meet Mr. Bush's standards.

James   February 29th, 2008 9:46 pm ET

So, this White House Aide at least has the honesty to admit his mistakes and resign gracefully as a result. I believe Sen. Obama committed the same offense and yet he thinks Plagriasm is NOT A BIG DEAL! Is that what a Senator wanted our children to know about Plagriasm? That it is okay?

SN   February 29th, 2008 9:53 pm ET

There's sign. If Obama gets the nomination, he'd proably plarigize people's work by talking w/o actions. there's scary.

keith Franklin, Tn   February 29th, 2008 9:54 pm ET

Well….what did you expect from any member of the staff of Bush Lite.

After the "brain" left…..the floodgates have really opened. I hope before long some of the old Bush cabinet and staff members write books or "come clean" with what has really happened.

I watched last night as Bush said he "hadn't heard about $4 a gallon gas possibilities. That was incredible and shows a man so detached from the real folks of this country. I just think Bush thinks we all are dumber than he is. What was the Republican Party thinking?

We cannot afford 4 or even 8 more yrs of the same.

Have you noticed that when Bush makes a statement about something it is usually the opposite of what happens. There is no recession….market drops 300+ pts……..no oil shortage…oil goes over $100 a barrel…..if Bush gets behind you call the undertaker!!!!

WJ   February 29th, 2008 9:58 pm ET

All you hillary supporters need to back a democratic candidate, who will realize the same goals as her, instead of blasting Obama. (And if you're a republican supporter, it really appears as if you feel threatened.)

Ree   February 29th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

Look at this Country it is going to the pigs. Hillary is a cry baby, a whiner and a cheater. If at first you do not succeed–try try again. First it was okay for the Democrates to punish Fla. and MIch. now that she is loosing she want those delegates to count. (wonder what would happen it the shoe was on the other foot) now she is trying to sue Texas because of the way they vote (They have voted this way for years, remember her husband ran for President and won the state) She accuses Obama of stealing other words, repeats it at the debate and at the end, steals other words as well.

How can anyone trust her. Her change is like the weather you do not know exactly what you will get from day to day. Like Hillary her attitude, tone and reason she should be President changes everyday.

Give me a break, ready on day one. I doubt it.

eva   February 29th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

Plagiarism is illegal! I don't understand how people are disputing that. It is theft. And it is unethical. He's not a "poor, poor" guy. He's a guy who made a mistake. And that mistake is not to be taken lightly. Or maybe you're accustomed to people not having the creativity and integrity to write their own material (ahem, Obama).

Val   February 29th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

People we are all in this MESS together……. Please lets get it right this time electing a Democrat is what's important. All of these petty issues to stray from the main focus will only put McCain in the White House.

Calisa   February 29th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

Look up the definition of plagarism. It is the UNauthorized use of someone elses material. Actually, it has long been time for Hillary Clinton to resign, i.e. quit. Eleven (11) losses in a row? PLEASE.

Mike   February 29th, 2008 10:22 pm ET

Hello America;

My fellow democrates, do you remember this;

“We are fired up and we are ready to go because we know America is ready for change and the process starts right here in Iowa.”

In Davenport, Iowa, those words escaped the barriers of a tired Hillary Clinton’s teeth. Without irony.

Ouch. That’s pretty bad.

Using two words ("just words") and an overall idea from one of your Campaign Chairs and personal friends, with permission, is not plagiarism. Look up the definition, knuckleheads.

You Clinton supporters are really desperate these days to scrounge for any possible criticism of Obama, aren't ya? Difficult thing to do, isn't it?

Jo Chicago   February 29th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

Even the corrupt Bush White House recognizes plagiarism when they see it. But if Barack Obama does it, it is justifiable since he "borrowed" from Deval Patrick.

Learn more about the success (that is sarcastic) of the Deval Patrick administration before your vote for his oratory doppelganger.

Oh? Bama   February 29th, 2008 10:43 pm ET

Plagiarism is plagiarism; if these guys are guilty, so is Barack Obama. What aren't they still harping on Barack for plagiarism? If the country is going to accept cheating from him, they need to overlook for these aides, right? What's fair is fair. Either punish them all or none of them.

Jean Alex   February 29th, 2008 10:58 pm ET

All of you Hillary supporters,
Have you forgotten her last stolen words in that debate?

Chandler   February 29th, 2008 11:21 pm ET

Jacob (8:20 PM), thank you for the definition of plagiarism. Thank you for also noting that you used a direct quote from dictionary.com. Ooops, I guess you forgot to do this.

Also note that this definition is not quite correct, because it has no room for self-plagiarizing. In practice, the "and" condition in the definition should probably be an "or" condition.

cecil   February 29th, 2008 11:21 pm ET

To Jacob,

Your a bit off on the meaning of plagiarism….the appropriation or limitation of the language, ideas, and thoughts of another author, and representation of them as one's original work.

That is exactly what Obama did!

Ninth grade, I went to private school it was the third for me.

Oh, you might want to ask your Mom what happened to Joe Biden for this very thing!

THE STATUE OF LIBERTY WILL GUARD THE BORDERS

HILLARY IS A GODDESS OF FREEDOM LIKE THE STATUE OF LIBERTY~

THE STATUE OF LIBERTY IS A WOMAN NOT A MAN! Why is freedom symbolized by a woman?

IMAGINE THE STATUE OF LIBERTY IN THE LIKENESS OF HILLARY and THE WORLD WILL WITNESS the TRUE POWER OF FREEDOM IN ACTION

THE STATUE OF LIBERTY IS HILLARY IN ACTION~

Woman are peacemakers, protectors, caretakers and givers of life, hope and truth.

Would the statue of liberty have the same power to inspire and liberate if IT WAS A SYMBOL OF A MAN?

If the statue was a man would it hold the torch of freedom?

Men are violent by nature. They love to play war games. Men love to fight, mame and kill. Their first natural reaction to conflict is to fight.

Think about it? Would there be WARS if the world was made up of women? Would there be Wars if the world was runned by women?

Men love symbols that represent war: war games, guns, knives. blood. They give movie titles names like "THERE WILL BE BLOOD". Men create the wars and women and chidren suffer and die. Unfortunately men die too. Men destroy themselves.

IF YOU A LOOKING FOR REAL CHANGE HIRE A WOMAN FOR THE NEXT AMERICAN PRESIDENT. HILLARY IS A WOMAN! PEACE WILL NEVER HAPPEN WITH A MAN IN CHARGE - THERE WILL ONLY BE MORE OF THE SAME.

America grasp this Golden opportunity "To wittness and experience the Statue of Liberty in Action"

Danielle, OH   March 1st, 2008 12:00 am ET

When will Obama confess???

Roland Madore, Fort Collins, CO   March 1st, 2008 12:02 am ET

I HAVE A QUESTION? IF AL QAEDA IS IN IRAQ WHY IN THE HELL ARE WE NOT BOMBING THE HELL OUT OF THEM? I THINK BUSH AND MCLAME SCREWED THAT ONE UP.
