No news, just ribs at McCain barbecue

GOP candidate Sen. John McCain of Arizona usually takes reporters' questions but was mum this weekend.
GOP candidate Sen. John McCain of Arizona usually takes reporters' questions but was mum this weekend.

SEDONA, Arizona (CNN) – Instead of appealing for votes on the campaign trail, Sen. John McCain spent the weekend playing host at his rustic Arizona home - and on Sunday members of the traveling press corps were his guests.

It was a news-free zone, and a charm offensive to be sure - but also a window into the private setting and self-described oasis of the man who may be days away from mathematically clinching the GOP nomination, months after being left for political dead.

McCain greeted reporters as he tended to the grill - tongs in hand - on the deck of his ranch house. Clad in a green Maine Maritime Academy baseball hat, white sweat shirt with a photograph of his family on it, faded Levis jeans and New Balance sneakers, the presidential candidate stood over two large, sizzling barbecues, preparing baby back ribs and grilled chicken.

McCain revealed that barbecuing for guests is one of the few ways he relaxes, especially during the grueling campaign, and was eager to share his carefully honed recipe on the gas grill: baby back ribs (bought at Costco), cooked bones down with a dry rub that's a third garlic powder, a third salt and a third pepper.

The trick to not letting it dry out? Keep putting lemon juice on, the senator said.

What is this question about an emergency call at 3 a.m ? When Goerge Bush received the message that 2 planes crashed into the twin towers in New York City, wasn't he in the middle of reading a story to school children which he first finished before calling his advisors?

Sen. McCain used the excuse "too busy" when asked why he was ducking a debate with Gov. Huckabee.........would that be too busy cooking the ribs or the hot dogs at his BBQ this weekend??? Total disregard for the millions of voters who wanted to see this debate happen. He is dishonest and cowardly.....and lacks the integrity to be the next leader of the free world.

Sen. McCain's the man! You gotta love him. Served as a military man (and spent 6 of his best years as POW), served in the senate (4 terms), and now serving up BBQ!

I sincerely hope that he wins in Nov. Not because he served up some BBQ, but because he is most qualified. He is the one to bring about true change. Don't be taken into Obama's empty hope speeches.

I think we should have Obama and Huckabee. They both have good temperments. I think they together would work any issue.
Obama if you win, and I am sure you will, I hope you will give Huckabee a position in the cabinet.

This is why we have no real investigative reporting. You all seem to be in bed together. Why do reporters accept these offers...because they are not really "reporters", just hired hands.

CNN had nothing bad to report on Senator John Sydney McCain so they posted this item, so you slimy democrats could post your nasty thoughts here. You Dems fight it out all the way to the convention and we will pick the fallen fruit in the Fall. Can you hear the landslide coming. Obama or Clinton will be buried in their own rehetoric.

Why would McCain enter a debate with someone that CANNOT MATHEMATICALLY BEAT HIM! It is a pointless debate. Who wants to see a contest that is so one sided? Even IF Huckabee wins the debate, it DOESN'T MATTER! He cannot obtain the delegates to win his parties nomination. How is that disregard for his voters? John McCain should just take time off and wait for the ACTUAL presidential race to begin. THEN the debates will happen. (Jesus, people... think for a change!)

I believe that Senator McCain is a shoo-in as the Republican nominee .

Governor Huckabee will probably be a tele-evangelist after the
    primaries.

And you didn't invite me Senator???? I wouldv'e loved to go, especially at a BQ! That's where the party is at! Plus, we couldv'e share some ideas to make your campaign improve! I'm telling you Senator, I can make you look like "Ulysses S. Grant"..........with style!! But of course, without the bad stuff, but unless that's what you want, do you? Na'h, na'h I'm just playing Senator, LOL!!! I'm just jealous because I wanted to go the BQ! Plus, who doesn't like BQ's! I don't know about you but maybe Senator McCain does know a little bit about partying.......

Plus, don't worry Senator. Like I said, I will make you look like "Ulysses S. Grant" in the upcoming months, and yes it will be kind of hard. But I got some ideas for you Senator, just next time when you have a BQ, holla back at your boy!!! We'll throw the party of the century baby! And do it with style..........

    LOL!!!

At least McCain talks to reporter. Obama hides from them , and if he does talk to them he only answered certain questions. Cnn and MSNBC hides from questions about Obama, but hits McCain and Clinton with all they have.

GW holds in Crawford every chance he gets.
Does the country REALLY want four more years of this kind of folderol??

Mike Huckabee and his followers are conservatives first and Republicans second. The GOP “Good-O-Boys” are republicans first and are just falling in line as the Democrats are just trying to fall in love with their candidate.

John McCain has moved the conservative party to the center where the moderates and liberal GOP members hang out. He is not planning to energize the conservative base to be elected. 20 % of the conservatives will not vote this election, another 10% will not vote for McCain, and most of the Huckabee and Paul supports will not vote for McCain. So where is McCain and the GOP planning to get the votes? Answer, the moderate and liberal conservatives. Game over for the conservative base of the GOP if Huckabee is not successful!
