A Barack Obama adviser says Canadian officials inaccurately portrayed talk about the camp's trade policy.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (AP) – Barack Obama's senior economic policy adviser privately told Canadian officials to view the debate in Ohio over trade as "political positioning," according to a memo obtained by The Associated Press that was rejected by the adviser.

Rival Hillary Clinton on Monday held up the memo as evidence of doublespeak.

The memo is the first documentation to emerge publicly out of the meeting between the adviser, Austan Goolsbee, and officials with the Canadian consulate in Chicago, but Goolsbee said it misinterprets what he told them. The memo was written by Joseph DeMora, who works for the consulate and attended the meeting.

Much ado about nothing - again. Too bad, Hillary.

The memo's main statement being used: to "view the debate in Ohio over trade as 'political positioning,"' …" goes both ways.

Hillary's comments too were nothing more but political positioning.

So what else is new?

She's such a loser - surely our country deserves better than her for a leader.

CHANGE IS COMING   March 3rd, 2008 5:08 pm ET

OKAY, BUT WHERE ARE YOUR TAX RETURNS HILLARY?

Sonya   March 3rd, 2008 5:06 pm ET

Yeah, and Farrakhan and your pastor Wright and your buddy Rezco are all just misunderstood too. You con artist, you'll be the one to cost the democrats the election. I'll never vote for a racist liar like you!!!

Marla   March 3rd, 2008 4:59 pm ET

What was his senior policy advisor on the economy doing meeting with anyone in the Canadian government now anyway? He is not the president or even on this the Labor/Trade Committee. Hell, he can't even have meetings on his own committees or send a surrogate. Mr. I am fresh clean and so anti-Washington politics. Give me a break!

Eric S   March 3rd, 2008 4:53 pm ET

Obama lied and got caught, period. Why is someone accusing Hillary? It was CTV who broadcast the story.

Charlotte   March 3rd, 2008 4:51 pm ET

Do I detect a sour note in the Obama supporters who now say they won't vote for Hillary if she is the nominee? Interesting, very interesting. A few days ago they were asking us to vote for Obama if Hillary is not the nominee, saying were are all democrats. HUMMMMM

I BELIEVE IN HOPE   March 3rd, 2008 4:51 pm ET

OTTAWA, CANADA–(Marketwire - March 3, 2008) - The Leader of Canada's New Democratic Party will call today for the resignation of the Canadian Prime Minister's Chief of Staff over improper intervention in the US Democratic Primary race.

At issue is a leak from Prime Minister Harper's office, which exaggerated conversations between the Obama campaign senior advisor Austan Goolsbee and Canadian diplomatic officials. The alleged source of the leak to Canadian news media has been reported as the Prime Minister's most senior advisor, his chief of staff Ian Brodie. The leaked information has now become a point of debate in the US Democratic Primary race.

Hon. Jack Layton will demand the resignation during the daily fireworks of Question Period at 2:00 pm EST, Layton's question is expected by 2:25 pm EST. The Prime Minister will be in attendance and would be expected to respond.

John   March 3rd, 2008 4:48 pm ET

Obama says he will meet with other countries without conditions. This is an example of how his meetings will be. Behind closed doors and then denial of the meeting and when evidence appears it is then called misrepresentation of substance. He's too green and not truthful. He always ducks and dodges the truth.
Hopefully Hillary won't get out as more of Obama's faults will probably surface and if they don't as a result of the primaries then they SURELY will when when the Republicans campaign against him.
He will lose.
GO HILLARY!!!

Janna.

Steve   March 3rd, 2008 4:40 pm ET

Hmmmmmmmmmmm There are those who say if Hillary is not the Democratic nominee they will vote for McCain..How about if Obama does not get the democratic nomination and he and Bloomberg team up for an Independent ticket??

Ever thought about that?? Then we will see true buyers' remorse!!

I would rather see Obama on an independent ticket . Go Obama!!!

JD in AZ   March 3rd, 2008 4:35 pm ET

There is no point in counting on polls as to who will beat McCain in November. There are numerous examples of polls being way off. From Clinton losing NH back to Dewey Defeats Truman, and probably beyond that.

I will support which ever one gets the nomination. Either one will be better than McCain.

My question to the Obama supporters is exactly what change will he bring? One person, even a president, will not change the way Washington works. Congress will still work the same wayand if a president goes against that he will most likely accomplish nothing.

Dems in 2008!

B. Smart   March 3rd, 2008 4:35 pm ET

YES WE CAN.
OBAMA 08.

In the beginning I was on a fence. Not any more. Obama will get my vote. Hillary Clinton needs to open the closet.

Tony   March 3rd, 2008 4:26 pm ET

It was exposed by CTV. The question is whether Obama did it. Why so many O-fans keep complaining Clinton. If you accept this kind of behaviors, then accept it as you wish. Don't blame others.

BR   March 3rd, 2008 4:23 pm ET

Hi Guys,
Comeon now…as an American, we have to set a presidence to the world that this is not a contast of dynesty… now Hillary and next will be Jeb Bush and next will Chealsey Clinton and then next will be Jenna Bush…. There should not be any Clintons or Bushes in the whitehouse for centuries.. get the talent like Obama.. he deserves it and by his pure instict we will be better off. He is the only one who can put the country together. The puzzle will be solved! Go for Obama if you are a smart American.

HILLARY'S IN BED WITH THE REPUBLICANS.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   March 3rd, 2008 4:19 pm ET

If Hillary Clinton gets the nomination, I would never cast a vote for her. She used poor judgement in using this as a threat to Canada and as much as I don't like Bush, he needs to speak up. Hillary has no right as a candidate reaching over into International affairs. Why hasn't Bush reminded her to stick to campaigning like he told Obama.

Jenny   March 3rd, 2008 4:12 pm ET

Why are people blaming Hillary for this? Obama lied about the meeting and now he's downplaying the remarks. It's about time he takes responsibility for this and not try to blame it on someone else.

Change we can believe in? We can't even believe Obama anymore.

Kyu Reisch, Radcliff, Kentucky   March 3rd, 2008 4:07 pm ET

Closely Watching, you are not enough to watch closely, double-speak is Obama, he is just two years Senator how many times he changed his political view, made mistakes and lied to his supporters. You tell me what Obama wants to change? He is worse than Kerry and Kennedy. Obama is naive, inexperienced and irresponsible, it is dangerous to let him work in the Office. Hillary is ready to lead our Country on day one. Hillary Clinton for 44th President.

Trev   March 3rd, 2008 4:05 pm ET

How did this become Senator Clinton's fault? She did not have the meeting. She did not release the memo. She did not lie about NAFTA. I am suprised that Obama supporters have not found a way yet to blame the devestating earthquake today on Hillary.

If there are undecided voters actually reading these posts, I ask you to look at how much hate Obama supporters show toward Hillary supporters. The candidates, of course, are fair game. Personal attacks on supporters are not.

Hillary 08

Rodney   March 3rd, 2008 4:04 pm ET

Calls for Hillary to withdraw are WRONG and Unpatriotic because they ask that we give up our right to due process in the election process and just give up. This is so UN-American! We are about fair competition and let the chips fall where they may. I can't believe that a Veteran would ask that the process be stopped when so many have died to give us the right to vote and stand up for what we believe in freely. We should never be afraid of a hard fought election. This primary is far from over.
GO HILLARY 2008!!!!!!

Black Republican in New York   March 3rd, 2008 4:04 pm ET

Report this extract: "Rival Hillary Clinton on Monday held up the memo as evidence of doublespeak."

Now, will Hillary do the right thing and hold up her taxes returns for 2007 so we can see where her husband and her are getting all that loot from.

Deb IL   March 3rd, 2008 4:03 pm ET

I am sick of hearing people say HIllary is fracturing the Democratic party. She hasn't done that any more than Obama has, since the country is almost evenly split. If he hadn't been so power hungry and waited a few more years, none of this would even be an issue now. (And get over the Iraq war vote, that seems to be all he can say when asked about his foreign affairs experience! Some of his own supporters voted for the same resolution for the same reasons.)

Amy, Oregon   March 3rd, 2008 3:59 pm ET

I think it's interesting that Clinton's campaign is accusing Obama of doublespeak when she herself is guilty. She goes around Ohio claiming she'll help them with their work problems yet she's voted for NAFTA how many times?

priscilla   March 3rd, 2008 3:58 pm ET

Lets count all of the lies that the Clintons have told the American people… oh wait we dont have all day!!!! come on people dont be as simple minded as Hillary seems to think we are… they took the memo out of context and only should the part that sounded bad…. same old politics…. Hillary you are becoming more and more sad as the days go by!

OBAMA 08 Hillary go back to New York!

Goodheart   March 3rd, 2008 3:57 pm ET

Does Obama know anything about trade? He's very weak on foreign policy of any kind.

Velle   March 3rd, 2008 3:56 pm ET

I have NO DOUBTS about Sen. Obama's integrity. My only concern is whether he has too much integrity to be as effective as he is dedicated to being on behalf of we American citizens. On the other hand, if we rely on Clinton to excercise scruples of any kind, we'll be sorely disappointed. The fact that she has run such a failing campaign and must now resort to all the lowest tactics she has honed in her thousands of years in politics indicates poor skills for a President. Listen up people and hold her accountable for the exagerations and misrepresentations she spews daily. "Thousands of speeches"? My foot! Nobody in 7 years in the Senate has made that many speeches. LISTEN TO HER speeches and if you don's smell a duplicitous rat then you are exactly the voter she is counting on. the problem with that being that she will likely GIVE the election to the Republicans. McCain knows it! And keep in mind that a war costing $400 million per day computes to roughly $1.43 million per American EVERY DAY! She voted for it, supports it and will send you the bill…soon!

David - It's now Day 409!   March 3rd, 2008 3:51 pm ET

You people (readers comments) really need to get a grip. There is VERY little difference between Hillary and Barack. The real differance is but one. Hillary Clinton is not a leader and Barack Obama is.

Hillary say's she ready on day one. Well it's day 409 since her announcement and so far we've had from her an arrogant and impotent campaign, a fiscally mismanaged campaign, a campaign that has gone through so many changes in tact, in managemment, in ideology, and in style we can't figure out whether she's Scarlett Ohara or Cruellla DeVille. One thing we do know, she give's Cybill a run for her money. Her long-time friends and supporters are turning thier back on her (anyone who says John Lewis changed camps becuase of political polls is just plain ignorant!).

When she announced on Jan 20, 2007 Hillary was the darling of the press and appeared a sure thing. Since then she's lost the press, she's lost her base of support, she's loosing her super-delegates, and saddly, it appears she is loosing long time supporters and friends.

Ready on day 1???? Excuse me? What planet are you from and what drug are you on? Can you imagine if something goes wrong in the first days of office? Hillary had her plan, and something knocked it off track (it's called life, we've all experienced it). Since then she's been a bumbling politician. Hell, she can't lead her own campaign let alone the Nation.

MICHAEL BURNETT L.I.N.Y.   March 3rd, 2008 3:49 pm ET

Hillary and her camp, this is getting a bit unreal to say the least! Why do they always try to blow things up? Why do they try so hard to get by with this ugly way of campaigning? Why cant she just except the fact the people do not want her or like her? This' I will do anything that I can to win, even if its evil or ugly has got to stop! Hillary we the people do not believe you anymore, nor do we trust you! I myself can not stand you anymore, I am so tired of your tactics its sad that you have to go so low!! It;s a shame that you have no respect for the people of this country nor your self. Just look what you have become, "YES" you look pitiful, talk about looking in the mirror, tell me what do you see? I am sure that when this is all said an done you will not like what you see!!!

Butterfly   March 3rd, 2008 3:45 pm ET

This is so sad. HRC will sell her soul to get back into the White House and so many cannot see. She is just like Bush but in a dress. why is she so desperate to win that she would destroy her own party? It's not fof the American people. WHERE ARE HER TAX RETURNS.

Sam   March 3rd, 2008 3:42 pm ET

Wake up America. Ohio and Texas, please don't be fool by this man. He lied to us. Can you trust him to pick up that phone call at 3AM?
Think again before it's too late.

kvk   March 3rd, 2008 3:34 pm ET

This is to reply to the vetran. First thanks for your service. My belief is however, that if you vote for Obama you will have the republicans in the white house., weather it be John McCain in the White House or Mr. Obama himself. Who do you think is trying to get him nominated.? I watch CNN and MSNBC all the time and can not believe how he can do no wrong and she can do no right. Everything Hillary Clinton says during a debate, he repeats using slightly different words. Please, she knows alot more than he does right now and I think he should have waited till he was more experienced

tina   March 3rd, 2008 3:32 pm ET

wow, today is antiobama day, cnn, fox, cbs, msn, everybody.i thot the canadians said the claims were false.i cant believe the media, the clintons must really be hard to spin the media like this.
American are sick and tired of negativism.thats why this undecided voter strongly behind obama.
victory for obama 2morrow will be huge

peter   March 3rd, 2008 3:31 pm ET

if anyone is wondering why cnn is starting to show a lot of hillary articles and talk about her more and being easier on her lately, it is because cable news want hillary to do real well this tuesday because they realize if Obama was to win big on tuesday then they wouldnt have anything to talk about for the next few months. so essentially the new networks and newpapers need hillary to do well in order to keep getting the ratings they have been getting.

Paulo   March 3rd, 2008 3:30 pm ET

Further proof that Obama is not ready and that he needs lots more scrutiny, which will be difficult to accomplish with the media's love fest with Obama.

Please do not let the biased media control our thoughts and country. VOTE for Hillary !

Wake-up people! Don't you see that the media wants Obama to win because they know that he will lose against McCain. As soon as Obama gets the nomination (hopefully he doesn't), the media will dig-up all the dirt about Obama and destroy him like yesterday's news.

joseph   March 3rd, 2008 3:30 pm ET

The only enemy that the American people have is the clintons.Bill clinton sign the NAFTA bill into law. Hillary clinton wants to renegotiate the NAFTA aggrement.Bill clinton turned his back during the genocide in Rwanda that killed more than a million people.Hillary voted for war that should have never been authorized and also surported G.Bush to use the same force in Iran.Madam experience, pls America don't want u in their white house.U don't need to impose urself on the senator experience.Go home and take care of bill because it's too late to cry when the head is off.

Scott   March 3rd, 2008 3:29 pm ET

I'm scared and saddened for America's chances at recovering from the damage that the Republicans have done, when I see people believing in her vitriol. The NAFTA issue is spun out of context.

Yes Senator Obama should have had some hearings in his sub committee if there were issues to investigate but this topic is being spun by the HRC camp, his subcomittee has oversight on NATO in Europe, not Afganistan!! John Kerry chairs that subcomittee.

Stop the lies!! I'll be glad when this is over!!

EFabian   March 3rd, 2008 3:29 pm ET

You Obama supporters are so funny.

How is this Hillary's fault? It was a respectable Canadian News channel that outed Obama. Hillary and her campaign would have been idiots had they not jumped to the chance of questioning Obama and his double talk. If the shoe were on the other foot, Obama "Alimighty" would have done exactly the same thing.

I guess Obama needs to take some of his own advice "say what you mean and mean what you say" or whatever his rhetoric is, cause those words are sounding emptier now more than ever.

Closely Watching   March 3rd, 2008 3:27 pm ET

Compared to Hillary's ( and Bill's) history of political double-speak this is small potatoes and in no way sways my support for Senator Obama-it is simply more underhanded and desperate attempts by the Clinton camp to sway the outcome of tomorrows primaries.

Obama '08

Obama fans, this isn't "spin" from the Clinton campaign. This was already reported by Canadian news a week ago. Its legit. I like how you all want Hillary to drop out before Obama gets exposed. Well if your a true dem then you'll want this to happen now, so Clinton can win the nomination instead of Obama getting exposed in the general and losing to McCain. But of course your only response to proof that Obama is just another dirty politician is "show your tax returns".

Wake up people.

Obama does the wink-wink with Canada and some followers say well where are her tax returns……Obama does and say anything to win and follwers say this is wrong cuz Hillary is playing the victim again.

I know CNN won't post this…..but ARE YOU ALL THAT GULLIBLE????? I truly hope that people wake up and chose the person that is best qualified for the job and knows what the heck she is doing on the economy and foreign affairs..and that is why I voted for Hillary!!!!

Hillary Clinton is going to destroy the Democratic Party, she will fracture Democratic support mark my words America! McCain may win in November and our country is going to face some of the worse financial times in American history. Further we are about to embark on a new world war with McCain at the helm. God help us all. We are going to need someone with Obama’s talents to help us all pull together to get thru what I see coming. God Bless You All!

judi in NJ   March 3rd, 2008 3:22 pm ET

As a previous strong Clinton supporter, I am getting sick and tired of Hillary. I never thought I would see the day, but enough of this "gotcha". And I am sick of her handing John McCain his talking points.

I will vote for her in the general election if she does pull this off, but again will be holding my nose. Very sad!

Caimon   March 3rd, 2008 3:22 pm ET

The media is leading the Democrats to another lost. Who told you Obama in a better position to win the general elections?

How Obama lost the general elections:

Obama defeat # 1: He can't mobilize the Democratic base; Hillary can.

Obama defeat # 2: He can win strong leading liberals, (not many around). He can’t win not centrist; Hillary can win both.

Obama defeat # 3: You can't rely on swim voters, they can switch on you overnight. Ask H. Dean. McCain will win them.

Obama # 4: The message of change is strong as fresh; it losses its value when time goes on and people understand it is without substance.

Obama # 5: The Constitution embraces division within Washington, so no one dominates the Washington's debates.

Obama Defeat #6: Chevez styles Democracy don’t work in America. Leading from Bottom to up. Policies are not made that way.

Thank you Democrats for electing McCain. See you in 2012, when you accept Hillary as your candidate.

Nod   March 3rd, 2008 3:22 pm ET

It is fascinating to read all the angry comments from the Obama supporters; I am sorry the truth hurts so much.

You still don't get it do you? OBAMA IS JUST ANOTHER POLITICIAN only worse because his whole rationale for running was that he was "different" and "better" than the rest of the policians.
He went on riding a white horse and trumpeting himself as the agent of
change who will deliver hope to your door…
Well…guess what: he isn't. He is politics *as usual* which debunks his `raison d'etre' as a presidential candidate. Except he is a hypocrite for claiming to be sooo different ….

So what on earth is he selling?

I am sorry the truth hurts so much…"folks". But brace yourselves for the Rezko trial and the Auchi connection because it ain't pretty.

LeRoy   March 3rd, 2008 3:21 pm ET

To Robert: Playing the "fear-mongering" card with a threat of McCain winning if Hillary wins the nomination? Newsflash: Obama is DOWN IN NEW JERSEY to McCain in a recent poll! NJ! A solid navy blue state! And let's not get started on keys swing states on MO, OH, and FL. I challenge you and other Obama supporters throwing around this line to look at the data and make your own conclusions.

To CNN: THANK YOU for airing this! Obama is hollow from the words he uses (not even his own!) to his apparent actions on important issues (NAFTA and the misinformation in foreign policy). The foundation on Obamaism is cracking and people are seeing the truth. Perhaps too late or perhaps just in time. I cannot tell that. But CNN, at least you have redeemed yourself slightly for bringing this to light.

Jen B.   March 3rd, 2008 3:21 pm ET

Charlotte   March 3rd, 2008 3:21 pm ET

One other thing, I just love the way the Obama-bots blame Hillary for their boys action. It's all her fault he had this meeting, It's all her fault he lied about it, It's all her fault the memo can to light. Maybe, just maybe, most of his supporters will see through him now. They just love to blame others for their boys action. She had nothing to do with this story coming to light, but Obama-bots are crying dirty politics!!!!!!!!

…and a waste of time. Can Tuesday come any faster? I grow tired of watching them beat each other up. I feel as if the fate of our country depends on our making sure a Democrat is elected and so we will need all of us to make that happen. There are more important things to worry about, like saving our country. I feel like we are swirling around the drain and the only two people who can help us out are fighting each other tooth and nail.

The longer Hillary stays in this race, the easier it is for McCain to win.
I don't mind either McCain or Obama for president.
I like them both.

Is Hillary trying to hold Obama back so she can run again in 2012?
If Obama wins the nomination sooner, he will have a better chance winning 2012, which may be what Hillary is thinking about. What does she care about the party?

Dr. T   March 3rd, 2008 3:15 pm ET

We should not be surprised to find out that Mr. Obama like every other politician plays politics. They hardly say what they mean and they do not always mean what they say. The very nature of politics means that policy positions are often calculated to maximise public support while one is seeking office. After the office has been secured then the "true colors" do begin to show. His hard line on NAFTA was forced by Mr. Russert who posed a narrow hypothetical question. Mr. Obama said what he had to say, however his Adviser Mr Goolsbee was sloppy. Probably the only thing Obama has said that will always be true is "we are the change we have been waiting for". Mr. Obama is no messaih, no politician will ever be. Good luck America.

Ben, Ohio   March 3rd, 2008 3:15 pm ET

Actually read the whole article and it sounds like some low-level Canadian diplomat just heard what he wanted to hear for one sentence, while the rest of the memo is perfectly consitent with Obama's position on renegotiating NAFTA. Naturally, it is the misunderstood part that makes the headline while the real facts of the discussion have to wait a few paragraphs. This is just a pathetic, one-day distraction. Unfortunately, it just happens to be one day before the primaries that will hopefully close this thing out so we can finally get down to the business of beating the Republicans.

Dr.Cruz for OBAMA   March 3rd, 2008 3:14 pm ET

IF YOU CAN'T WIN WITH THE TRUTH, START LYING. BUT THAT'S NOT NEW FOR THE EITHER OF THE CLINTONS. THEY SPENT 8 YEARS DOING JUST THAT. NAFTA AND THE IRAQ DISASTER BELONG TO HILLARY 100%.

I read in another ticker article that Jay Rockefeller endorsed Obama. Man, is he going to look STUPID when his constituents vote for Hillary in May. Very few here like Obama, the overall feeling is that he can't be trusted. This article, among many others, proves it.

Geoffwjr   March 3rd, 2008 3:13 pm ET

She is a typical politician that will say anything to get elected, she will throw all types of mud from his name to his dress, it is unbelievable how much crap she throws, she is throwing lthe kitchen sink at him right now she is just trying to win.

I like the fact that she can be for just women in her stances but if Barrack talked liked that they would say he is showing preferential treatment . There are a lot of women who are supporting her just because she is a woman. That is ridiculous. Just burn your bra!

Hilliary is so power hungry and negative I would never vote for her, in the beginning I was, because of her husband, but that is stupid because if her husband was a surgeon would I let her operate on me based soley on that fact, sounds ridiculous doesn't it .

THINK PEOPLE SHE JUST WANTS TO BE IN THE OFFICE FOR THEIR WON LEGACY NEXT IT WILL BE CHELSEY RUNNING FOR MAYOR OF New York in four years then the white house and she will speak about all of the experience she has, Just trying TO KEEP IT IN THE FAMILY. Nepotism I am tired of it.

WE NEED REAL CHANGE GO OBAMA!

Leslie, Annandale Virginia   March 3rd, 2008 3:13 pm ET

HSNP   March 3rd, 2008 3:13 pm ET

There's too much smoke swirling around Sen. Obama on too many subjects to be just smoke bombs hurled by the Clinton campaign. There's a fire in there somewhere.

Tricia   March 3rd, 2008 3:12 pm ET

Interesting that CNN is posting so much negative Obama stuff on the day before Texas/Ohio primaries. How about investigating a Hillary lie. She DID NOT have anything to do with the peace process regarding Northern Ireland (stated in MSNBC Debate). As a Brit who, along with my children, nearly got blown up by a bomb in London during those troubled days I object to Hillary trying to claim any experience or achievement in this area. Release your White House Records Hillary and prove me wrong. You are a great disappointment to this white woman born the same year as you. You are such a liar.

OK, folks first we learn about Obama's dubious financial arrangments with a Chicago crook being tried for extortion; now we learn that his public opposition to NAFTA is just political posturing, designed for public consumption. Haven't we had enough of corruption and hypocrisy in the White House? A vote for Obama is a vote for more corruption and hypocrisy.

andrew jones   March 3rd, 2008 3:11 pm ET

I can see the Billary campaign telling the Canadians to write-up a memo that misconstrue Obama's positions in the said meeting.

Typical clintonian way of dirty politicking…dont be fooled by anything that will come out of the Clintons. they are a sham!

If only Obama can bring out all of the dirt during Bill Clinton days, Billary's campaign would have been over!

VOTE OBAMA!!

BK   March 3rd, 2008 3:11 pm ET

This is big when you go behind the American people's back and tell Canada that you didn't mean what you said about NAFTA, you were just telling people that to get their vote. Watch out for BO Ohio, Texas, Vermont, and Rhode Island. He lies.

Martha, Texas   March 3rd, 2008 3:11 pm ET

I find it amazing how things just show up out of no where at the 9th hour. The bottom line is both Clinton and Obama agree on 90% of the same policy issues and no matter who has to take on McCain in the fall, we all have to come together if we want to the white house back.

All things considered, when you vote it should be for the person you think can win in the fall and get something done once they are in the white house.

Nando, Florida I agree with you…thank God this is over tomorrow.

Elizabeth   March 3rd, 2008 3:10 pm ET

I get so tired of the smear campaigns and I know I'm not alone in this, so I decided this year I would not vote for someone who used this as a tactic to get elected, it's about promoting your best and showing how you can do the job not about mud slinging and for that reason primarily I would not vote for Hillary I would vote Obama.

Tracy   March 3rd, 2008 3:09 pm ET

Hillary absolutely can win the democratic nomaination AND beat McCain in the general election. As soon as people stop jumping on the "Hope" bandwagon and get onto the team with the best fighter in the ring, we will be on our way! She is a solid contender and no matter how people want to look at the candidate's records and experience, she is the better choice! We are voting to put someone in the White House to do a job, not voting for who we want to have over for dinner on Saturday night.

David, Gilbert Arizona   March 3rd, 2008 3:09 pm ET

Reading is fundamental. It has become very obvious the average voter never gets past the headlines and the first paragraph. Don't bother reading the rest of the article. Just make a knee jerk judgement based on the headline.

This is exactly why we end up with the leaders we have. Voters do not take the time to read past the headlines then blame the media for being biased.

mork252   March 3rd, 2008 3:08 pm ET

Article neglects to point out that Hillary's stance was charecterized by Canada to be essentially the same as Obama's. Political posturing, not set in stone policy.

Ron Az   March 3rd, 2008 3:08 pm ET

I'll Bet all you people who are voting for this " big change " Are the same ones who voted for Bush, Because during the last election, theirs no way he carried all of those states. As long as we have electronic voting machines, we will never get the president we want, only who they want us to have. Heres a prediction, Regardless of which democrat runs, Mc Cain will win and be president. programers can make a machine say anthing they want it to say.

toby   March 3rd, 2008 3:08 pm ET

Why is it MUD if you call Obama and his campaign on facts that the MEDIA should be asking? Why does CNN not ask the questions?

Thomas One   March 3rd, 2008 3:07 pm ET

IMHO, Obama and Clintons are both desperate to win. Hillary does this by being so unpleasantly aggressive and bossy. Obama does this by lying. They are the same. If I were to choose I better one I choose Clinton.

BEEF?   March 3rd, 2008 3:07 pm ET

Obama where's the beef? You let them build you up into this great 'savior'. The judgement argument is not for Hillary to answer to -it's Obama who sold you that stuff. The wise fellow and all his flip-flopping is coming to light faster than a rocket.

He knows that Hillary is the best candidate for the job. I think it is foolish with this John M. face-to-face polling. No country in its right mind would now elect another Republican to continue Bush's wreck.

Old politics - that's Obama! Deflect the ation away from my creditals. Focus on my smooth talk. Focus on my competition. Focus on anything else but my qualifications. Look over there at her. And him. And them. Not here. Not here!! Where's the beef man? !

I'm just asking?

Laughing at this...   March 3rd, 2008 3:03 pm ET

It's so funny how so many people try to find so fault in Obama and will go to the extreme of using his political advisors words (that were misinterpreted) as evidence to call him a liar. LOL! It is clear that it is becoming a very desperate attempt to use whatever (his middle name, his advisor, his 4 hours at a law firm that represented Rezko) against him. Its so funny how some people use "feelings" as facts and misinterpretations. At the end of the day, vote for your choice but i encourage you all to vote from the facts versus someone else's feelings.

ps… the next president of this country will have to be VERY strong and level headed in order to deal with the mess he or she would be inheriting

VA   March 3rd, 2008 3:03 pm ET

A liberal caught deliberately misleading Americans…

Ha Ha!!

Chris From California   March 3rd, 2008 3:02 pm ET

I think it is a sad commentary on a person to essentially tell American voters, such as those in Ohio, whose lives have been adversely affected by trade policies that have not worked for them that he would re-negotiate and/or end some trade practices under under certain conditions on their behalf to get their votes and then to have his campaign turn around and hold a secret meeting with Canadian officials, telling them not to worry about what he is saying on the campaign trail about NAFTA - that his words are only "political" rhetoric, not "policy."

Whose side is Barack Obama on? Who is he representing?

Debra Austin, Texas   March 3rd, 2008 3:02 pm ET

It's amazing how the air around Hillary just stinks. It must be the mud from the pigs she's lying around with that gives off the stench. Gutter politics Hillary! You know this to be a lie but it's business as usual, 'doing/saying anything to win'. Sounds a whole like George W. Bush. And by the way Hillary, where were you when the Senate was voting a couple of weeks ago to protect the American people from spying by our own country, a vote on FISA. Now Obama came back to Washington to vote, McCain came back to Washington to vote but it seems little Miss Hillary was out campaigning or maybe she was taping for Saturday Night Live, or one of her other entertainment spots. Great leadership Hillary!

phil   March 3rd, 2008 3:01 pm ET

I can't help but thinkthat no matter who get's elected in four years we will be debating the same issues, because none of them will actually fix any of the major problems we have.
I picture that if Obama were to get elected he would immediately start campaigning for the next election, and when asked why he got nothing done his answer would be that he was too busy campaigning to attend to those issues.

Stig   March 3rd, 2008 3:01 pm ET

Remember that the Canadian government at the present time is run by the Conservative party and that they are known for doing things in the Rove/Bush style. This is likely just a slur against a candidate the Harper government would rather not see become president.

If there's any finger pointing it should be at the Canadian government for interfering with the US political process.

Nothing… And I do mean NOTHING that's said here will change my vote on the candidate of my choosing.

Secondly, nothing my candidate's opposition states about my candidate will change my vote.

I prefer to think for myself, and do RESEARCH on my own instead of being force-fed by people on the internet or the media.

It would do a lot of good if some of you people did the same.

Carry on. (Not that this will get posted anyhow.)

It is a non issue, the Canadian parliament just issue statement, saying whatever the Obama campaign was syaing that the story is not true, the Canadians issued a press release where is CNN and Drudge report when they have to clarify this instead of spreading false infromations.

Nando, in Florida, it may be over tommorrow if Hillary does not win, but it wil not be over for him, all of his lies will come out there will be 8 months for him to be vetted, you people believe tha Hillary is being hard on him and throwing the kitchen sink, there are things that she will not even do or say because she know it will damage the party's chances of winning if he is the nominee, she is trying to get the public to do it's job and research this man, but for the good of the party she will not go after him as she should, but the republicans will do and say them and they will have no mercy on him, so it will not be over it will just be the beginning for him, eight whole months, so much will come out, All of you will be sorry in the end and we will have four more years of republican leadership and you will be the ones to blame.

Interpret this — Race versus Gender? It is a bit odd, that B O has a white mother and a black father yet he is being touted as the "black" candidate, and from what the press has presented has only benefited through African American support at the polls — not to mention the fact that he is also male.

I too am the son of a single mother. My father was 3/4 Native American and my mother was white. From where I sit, I saw my mother divorce my father then fight and work hard so that she could take pride in knowing she did all that she could to support me, my brothers, and my sisters.

Being male, I have both enjoyed the privileges bestowed upon me because of my gender and/or racial appearance, and I have often felt guilt knowing how women in this country aren't afforded the same privilege due to their gender, and then too their skin color. Because of her gender, my mother suffered and had to work even harder for less rewards. Ultimately, I suffered too since she was female and because my father wasn’t around to grant our family the benefit of his male privilege.

Now I have a daughter, and there are many reasons why I could NOT in good conscious support a naive candidate like B O. If for no other reason, I want Hillary to be president as an example to all mothers, and to all daughters, that there is nothing that they cannot accomplish as my mother taught me by example — even if you have to fight a little harder because of your gender.

HILLARY in 08, and Beyond!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brian   March 3rd, 2008 2:58 pm ET

Hillary's supporters are starting to sound like Ron Paul's supporters. Everything is a conspiracy and there's no logical way that Hillary couldn't win the nomination. That is, of course, so long as the voters don't overwhelmingly reject her campaigning - which they have been doing - just like with Ron Paul.

andrew   March 3rd, 2008 2:58 pm ET

The Canadians misremember!!!!!!!!!

Don   March 3rd, 2008 2:58 pm ET

For those of you who watch the news and watch different stations, you should have seen the Canadian paliament appologising for misinterpreting what Obama's camp said. Look if one camp has something to say plz let it be true. the Rep. are going to use this against us in the general elections.

Rose - Baltimore, MD   March 3rd, 2008 2:58 pm ET

This is just like the replay that we had on the eve of Wisconsins primary, remember? But still Obama won and he is going to sweep tomorrows primaries as we'll.

Lloyd Hansen   March 3rd, 2008 2:57 pm ET

Bad for the economy, bad for foreign relations, his plans will raise taxes significantly, highly supportive of abortion in all its forms and wants to remove our military from Iraq so al Qaida can fortify itself before we go back in and finish the job. Let Barack Obama stand as a prime example that NOT ALL CHANGES ARE GOOD.

cc, Chicago   March 3rd, 2008 2:57 pm ET

Here's the thing, the trade agreement is ALREADY in place. You can open up new negotiations, but to amend it, your partners in the trade agreement (i.e. Canada and Mexico) have to agree. The fact that Obama gets that it may not be simple to just say to your trading partners we're going to rewrite this on our terms and the devil to you is not a bad thing. However, the fact that both Obama and Clinton are promising just that to the Ohio voters is dishonest. Even worse, Clinton is attacking Obama for his trying to smooth things over with one of those trading partners so really she comes out looking the worst in all of this. So much for her so called experience in foreign relations. Last I checked, it wasn't a good idea to attack one of your biggest allies…

Lynn, Vancouver, BC   March 3rd, 2008 2:56 pm ET

I am a Canadian and believe me this is not a big deal in Canada. In fact, what is of more concern is Hillary Clinton's contention in a speech where she said that American free trade agreements should always benefit Americans. The discrepenies in wages is all about the cost of health care which can amount to hundreds of dollars per month to businesses.

Anyone who knows about Canadian policies is aware that our environmental and work safety standards are equal to or stronger than those of the Americans. NAFTA is always being renegotitaed, and in fact, changes were made behind closed doors to change regulations that favoured the American standards much to the chagrin of Canadians.

democracynow2008   March 3rd, 2008 2:56 pm ET

Hillary wants to talk about double speak and she voted for the resolution to go to war in Iraq in 2002 lol.
Hillary is double speak every day .

Ry. Jones   March 3rd, 2008 2:56 pm ET

I find the timing rather convenient. Canada has the Conservatives in power, and the Conservatives are much closer politically to the Republicans than the Democrats in the US. The longer the Democrat primary season extends, the better it is for the GOP.

Things that make you go hmmmmm….

PEACEFUL 1   March 3rd, 2008 2:56 pm ET

Guys theres also a report on MSNBC TV .com stating that CTV has released a statement saying that the Clintons have also made contact with the Canadian gov't concerning their rhetoric on NAFTA.

Lisa   March 3rd, 2008 2:55 pm ET

I don't know what polls you are reading, but all national polls show MCain beating both Clinton and Obama.

Remember Obama has to count on Independent and Republican votes in the general, just as he has in this primary. McCain will be competition for those votes in the general election, Clinton is not getting those votes in the primary.

Think what you will, but the Republicans are voting against Clinton, not for Obama in our Democratic Primary. They will vote McCain in November! Obama will not make it to the White House.

Only Clinton has a shot at beating McCain!!!

Sharon of Illinois   March 3rd, 2008 2:55 pm ET

This is not true. The Canadians have issued a statement attesting to the fact that this is not what happened. Watch the news. MSNBC had it live.

TheTruthHurts   March 3rd, 2008 2:54 pm ET

I'm a solid Obama supporter, but he needs to address this. Truth is neither one of them is anti-NAFTA. They are anti-exploitation. Parts of NAFTA allow exploitation. Both would seek to fix this.

This is the same hair splitting as on healthcare. These two are not that different on policies.

Perspective, Judgement, Divisiveness and leadership. On the latter, that is my big question, what does Hillary see as her leadership qualities? She is clearly a hard working smart woman. That doesn't make you a leader alone. Neither does great speeches. I've discovered that Barack is more than speeches, is Hillary more than hard work? From what I've seen, he is a far better leader if by nothing else, tapping into what was really going on in America and motivating over 1 million donors, 1 million calls to ohio and texas. That takes leadership.

Rose - Baltimore, MD   March 3rd, 2008 2:54 pm ET

Yes Nando, Florida - Thank God this will be over tomorrow. The Hillary we hear today will be old news tomorrow. When tomorrow comes we'll be looking forward to better things in the future. We need to concetrate on fighting our opponents (GOP) and not each other (Dems).

THE KID   March 3rd, 2008 2:53 pm ET

since we are down to the goody goody. Lets examine the Peter Paul
story. Is this real or a internet joke? For the life of me I cannot figure
out how she gets sued for campaign fraud and is not a story. If Peter Paul was suing Barrack Obama for concealing close to $ 2
million dollars in contributions, we would not hear the end of it from
the Clintons and all the networks, especially Fox. Because I've noticed
that Hannity has took it on his own to bring down Barrack. I believe
Barrack is trying to take the high road, but what about the networks.
All of the Clinton supporters say quit picking on her , you are not being fair, blah ,blah ,blah. So whats up cnn, msnbc, fox. abc ,cbs nbc,
& Clinton, say it isn't so. And whats up with the yellow all the time ?
peace out

Debra   March 3rd, 2008 2:53 pm ET

There you all go! Falling for the Clinton victim role. She is wrong and its not that he doesn't accept responsibility. Its that she is always attacking silly stuff. Get real! Obama is as about as real as you are going to get.

Nobody wants Bill in the white house again.

Robert   March 3rd, 2008 2:53 pm ET

If we want a Republican in the White House for the next 4 years (at least), vote for Hillary Clinton. She will galvanize the Republican Party like we haven't seen in years, plus scare Independents completely into McCaine's corner and that will be that. And that's starting off wherein half the country wouldn't vote for her anyway…fairly or unfairly so. She owns the core Democractic constituency, but will not be able to beat McCaine. Her errant Iraq vote will never allow her to argue as strongly or effectively as Obama could. I still think it is the REALLY Big Issue of our time as it has cost so many lives (not to mention the thousands it has adversely affected mentally/emotionally) and is slowly bleeding this country to death monetarily. The chance that we could get a really smart, fresh thinker in the White House who surrounds him/herself with the very best people….be they Democrats or Republicans….gives me hope, YES HOPE, that we can begin to rebuild our country and show the world we still remember what real leadership is all about.

Gary in Ct   March 3rd, 2008 2:53 pm ET

Stop and re-read this before you start making a bunch of stupid comments. The 'incriminating document' is a 'memo' (meaning nothing official) that 'sufaces the day before a critical vote'. It was talking about something spoken 'privately' (meaning no corroborating witnesses) concerning a meeting that took place 'over a month ago'.

If you have never witnessed a smear campaign before….it looks a lot like this!

Just in, Canada's government just released a statement disavowing the implications of the memo. Canada's government said that the memo was not intended to reflect that Obama was having two stances on NAFTA, one in private and one in public. Canada apologized for the misinterpretation that the memo has put out. This stance by Canada, its parliament and its government is a rare one and probably won't resolve the damage that the false memo has inflicted on Senator Obama's campaign in Ohio. Hillary Clinton should be ashamed of having brought out this memo on her stage pitches today and she should formally apologize to Senator Obama for this attack.

But knowing Mrs. Clinton, we all konw she won't admit a mistake ever.

Texasboo   March 3rd, 2008 2:52 pm ET

WOW the Sybillary, Hildebeast supporters are out in full force today. Very whiny and ignorant indeed. The polls show that Obama has closed the 20% gap from a month ago.

Sybillary will not be the Dem Nom unless she lies and cheats to win it. If she's the Dem nom., she will lose in the general election. The Republican smear will bring out worst smears/swiftboating that would make Rove the ultimate sith lord.

Another 4 years of Republican war, bad economics, low pay, no health insurance, et. all.

Obama is the only one who can beat McCain in the general election. Sybillary will galvanize the Republican base of historic proportions.

Sybillary will not release her tax records and White House records.

Funny how the MSM has been silent about the Obama comment backstage before an event in Texas to an aide when he said "Watch me make these white people swoon". Has America become so "dumbed down" that this is now okay? Are people so enamored of Obama that they willingly submit to his trickery & chicanery? I'll brew the coffee America while you wake up!!

I think people need do some research into Hillary's past. It's very shady, worst than John McCain and his Lobbyist advisors. She received money from a lot of shady leaders. Such as Aristide(former President of Haiti). He basically created the unstablity that lead to Haitian refugees. Hillary and Bill received support(drug money) from Aristide and used our military forces to place him in power. He was eventually forced out of power but his self imposed emargo that Bill Clinton agreed to damaged Haiti. So I think you people should do some research on exactly who you are voting for. Don't be fooled by Hillary's so-called experience.

What a load of garbage. His political position holds no bearing whatsoever on the actual policies that will be implemented. Any policies that get implemented will need the input of all 535 members of congress to be enacted. His political position is only one piece of any policy that actually gets enacted. This is nothing more than a twisting of words to suit an agenda. Everything that is said during a campaign is campaign rhetoric, because everyone knows that the president cannot get things done without congress. When candidates talk about their plans, be it health care, NAFTA, immigration, etc, everything they say is all campaign speak, because, and hopefully you naysayers can understand this….A PRESIDENT CANNOT ENACT THEIR PLANS WITHOUT CONGRESSIONAL APPROVAL!!!!

I was a Clinton supporter for a long time, but the way she conducted herself in awful. One question that needs to be asked is why a EXPERIENCE candidate ran into financial trouble even though she had name recognition AND was ahead of her opponent in funding raising. I know I would not want someone that could not manange a Presidential campaign trying to solve the economic woes!

Everyone trying to find anything to say I told you so. Clintons have businness with foriegn companies. If she get the nonmination and win president, something shocking will come out and the republican will try to impeach her. She is too secretive.

G Y Canadian   March 3rd, 2008 2:47 pm ET

Canadians can not misinterpret what Americans said. We speak same language, don't we?

Lesley   March 3rd, 2008 2:46 pm ET

Tomorrow's win in Texas for Obama will end the Clinton era. Her negativity will not win her the White House. Texan for Obama!

Roc   March 3rd, 2008 2:46 pm ET

All of you uneducated Hillary supporters are really pathetic. As I read all your comments, Now I know how Bush/Cheney got into office and stayed for the eight years that he did. All you democrats that dont know the facts is why that happened. This is my last year as a Registered Democrat I'll be switching to and Indepandent that votes democrat. I just dont wanna be part of a party as silly as this one is!!!

Wayne   March 3rd, 2008 2:46 pm ET

CNN has had a pro Hillary slant all along. Someone who loses 11 straight states by an average margin of 33% does not deserve positive press. Not even Huckabee has lost 11 straight. Hillary is sinking the Dem party. Obama can wrap up the nomination..the best case scenario for Hillary is to take it to the convention because Obama will have the pledge delegate lead. We have two options..Obama wraps up nomination on Tuesday or a vicious fight for months. Please decide.

OBAMA 08
CNN you better post this comment.

Adam   March 3rd, 2008 2:46 pm ET

So much for "Real Change"
Politics as Usual………………………..

HILLARY 08!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Madilyn   March 3rd, 2008 2:46 pm ET

I was wondering if CNN was ever going to post this story…it is funny to me that it did not make headlines on the CNN home page like all of the negative ones for Clinton. Obama is terribly inexperienced along with staff. If you cannot articulate your ideas to our allies properly how will you ever communicate with world leaders that hate us…ones that you cant wait to meet with, if we had misunderstandings like this with one of them it could cause a war! For a canidate that wants to say words matter, he sure doesnt use them well, except for some prewrote speech he is giving.
I pray that the people in Texas and Ohio are paying attention to all of this and will vote Hillary!!!!!!!!!!

Jon, Lantana   March 3rd, 2008 2:45 pm ET

Waahh…everyone alway misinterprets what I say/do. Everyone is so negative and nasty to me. Republicans are going to eat you up I cant wait.

s.b.   March 3rd, 2008 2:45 pm ET

So the same guy who a few days ago denied a meeting ever took place, now says he was misrepresented. Right.

Another Veteran   March 3rd, 2008 2:45 pm ET

Interesting tidbit Obamites, any explanations?

This is usually the domain of the Clintons where they doublespeak from crowd to crowd, debate to debate and poll to poll.

She was asked last night if she thought Obama was Muslim, "There's nothing to base it on………… as far as I know'.

Again a simple NO would suffice, but there is LEFT a hint of the possibility when one considers Hillary is the smartest woman in the world based on??????

You can tell when she is lying, she used "You know" 5 times in a paragraph.

Kind of like when she said "I don't know or don't recall" in front of a congressional hearing WELL OVER 50 TIMES in only 42 paragraphs.

Please stay in Hillary, dig up the dirt on Obama and make it easier for quasi-Republican McCain to win.

These three are the best we can do?

joy   March 3rd, 2008 2:45 pm ET

Another misunderstanding???.

Joshua College Station TX   March 3rd, 2008 2:45 pm ET

Once again Hillary doing anything she can to smear Obama. Don't let the facts the in the way, Hillary!

harry K   March 3rd, 2008 2:45 pm ET

Hey! Nando …….Tomorow we just begin because Hillary will win and you know why??? Because she is tested and he is a FAKE

Veronica   March 3rd, 2008 2:45 pm ET

Before you go screeching into the night about double speak LOOK AT THE DATE!
The memo is from Feb 8 and in no way references the content of the stump speeches currently nor the statements made at the debates. Moreover, the memo confirms, and is very very consistent, about the major issues that Obama has raised about all trade agreements. This is not a "wink" and is nothing more than a clarification. After that clarification the Canadians came to different conclusion about Obama's position, it is not Obama that changed his position but the Canadians and it was three days after Super Tuesday, not immediately after the debate. This is good information but old news.
Stop it with the hyperbole.

GO OBAMA!

Eric S   March 3rd, 2008 2:44 pm ET

First he denied the existence of such a meeting and now the memo came out and he said it was misunderstood.

He was lying. Period. Too much for Mr. Hope to admit that.

Lets Get Ready for Change!   March 3rd, 2008 2:44 pm ET

It is not Obama who was misunderstood; it was an Adviser's conversation that was misunderstood. Remember Obama wasn't at the private meeting and neither was any of us, so no one really knows what was said and whether or not there was some sort of miscommunication. It is not the first or last time that two people have a conversation and one takes it one way and the other takes it a different way. I AM STILL FOR OBAMA!!!!!!!!!
