Obama's campaign downplayed an economic advisor's conversation with a Canadian official.
Obama's campaign downplayed an economic advisor's conversation with a Canadian official.

(CNN) - Barack Obama's campaign manager downplayed reports Monday an economic advisor discussed the Illinois senator's position on NAFTA with a Canadian official, characterizing the meeting as an "informal" discussion not under the direction of the campaign.

"This is being reported as if somehow this is an official meeting of an Obama representative and the Canadian government," Obama campaign manager David Plouffe said in a conference call with reporters. "That was not the case. He was essentially doing a walking tour and was essentially having a casual conversation and the report on that conversation was not accurate. "

The meeting was first reported last week by Canadian television network CTV. The report referenced anonymous sources that said one of Obama's chief economic advisors, Austan Goolsbee, said the candidate was only talking tough on NAFTA for political reasons, and would likely not seek to change the trade agreement with Canada if he became president. Both Obama's campaign and the Canadian embassy immediately denied Goolsbee had ever made such a suggestion, and did not reveal Goolsbee had ever spoken with the Canadian government.

But the Associated Press reported Monday it had obtained a memo from a Canadian diplomat essentially confirming CTV's story and stating Goolsbee said Obama's tough talk on NAFTA was "more about political positioning than a clear articulation of policy plans."

Goolsbee denied Monday he ever made such a suggestion, and the Canadian embassy issued a statement saying there was it had "no intention to convey, in any way, that Senator Obama and his campaign team were taking a different position in public from views expressed in private.

“The Canadian Embassy and our Consulates General regularly contact those involved in all of the Presidential campaigns and, periodically, report on these contacts to interested officials. In the recent report produced by the Consulate General in Chicago, there was no intention to convey, in any way, that Senator Obama and his campaign team were taking a different position in public from views expressed in private, including about NAFTA. We deeply regret any inference that may have been drawn to that effect.

Plouffe told reporters Monday that the Clinton campaign was pushing the story as part of their so-called "kitchen sink" strategy.

"We understand we are in the closing days of a campaign here and the Clinton Campaign is trying to make a lot of this and I think in some part, heel their own problems on their NAFTA positioning," Plouffe said. "This is part of the kitchen sink campaign the Clinton campaign telegraphed last week. They're throwing anything and everything out there to try to revive their flailing campaign."

UPDATE: Speaking with reporters Monday, Obama said he was unaware Goolsbee had met with a Canadian official.

"It turned out that the Canadian consulate in Chicago contacted one of my advisers, Austan Goolsbee, on their own initiative, invited him down to meet with him, he went down there as a courtesy," Obama said. "And at some point they started talking about trade and NAFTA, and the Canadian embassy has confirmed that he said exactly what I've been saying on the campaign trail, which is that I believe in trade, but it's important for us to have labor/environmental standards that are enforceable."

Obama Take the High Road, Right! Its seems your campaign manager, David Plouffe, can do all your dirty work for you. Your campaign has gone very negative against Sen. Clinton it's just done by David Plouffe, not you, right? Sen. Clinton didn't come up with this story, nor has the Clinton campaign pushed it. I heard it first this morning on CNN and they seem to favor Obama in their reporting. But, by all means, explain away what was actually said by your representatives. I would like clarity from the Obama camp on any issue. I'm sure the voters in Ohio would too!,

It's Time For The Right Change! Hillary 08

Hillary has every right to request that he come clean!! The American people have every right to know whether he is making side deals with other countries. Senator Clinton today is proud to announce the endorsement of two distinguished, retired admirals, Vice Admiral Donald C. Arthur and Rear Admiral Stuart F. Platt. They join an eminent group of 30 retired admirals and generals who have endorsed Senator Clinton to be our nation’s next Commander-in-Chief.

Many of our nation’s most distinguished military officers stand proudly with Hillary Clinton because they believe that she has the strength, experience and leadership necessary to be President and Commander-in-Chief. They include five former general and flag officers at the rank of four stars, including two former chairmen and one vice-chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In addition, more than 2,000 veterans and military retirees are members of Senator Clinton's national and state veterans’ steering committees.

Adding 2 more to the list ....GOOO HILLARY!!!!

That is the problem with Barack Obama, he downplays everything; and, so far, the media is letting him get away with it.

From Rezco to Nafta he never has to answer for anything.

I saw a recent Faux News gathering of Obama supporters, none of them could name anything he has accomplished, or any of his positions on anything. They all said they support him "because we like him"...the same thing George Bush supporter's named.

We have had almost 8 years of a not qualified President, can we afford 4 more?

The media needs to act like journalists again and peel the onion. There are layers and layers of Obama to uncover.

Get busy!

concern citizen   March 3rd, 2008 5:55 pm ET

Hillary talks about the entire situation as proof that Obama is all talk and no action. Obama is saying one thing to voters and having closed meeting with Canada saying something different. However, she has flip flopped many times. She told the people in Ohio she was aganist NAFTA and there were quotes from interviews and books that contridicted her statements in which she supported NAFTA. She stated that she voted for the war based on the evidence presented to her. Jay Rockafella who is a member of the senate intelligence committee stated she did not read the document before she voted for the war. This is horrible. How could she have based her vote on evidence when she did not read the documents with the so call evidence? Is this the type of leadership the country wants in which a candidate does not read information before voting for war? This should be discussed in the media.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone from the Clinton camp planned this whole NAFTA fisaco. The Clinton camp will not stop even when the facts are clear . Truly, she can only run on a kitchen run campaign. That has been obvious since Obama has gained momentum.

I trust the American people are smarter and tired of the politics of hate.

Now she is a qualified president for sure, but definitely not a president that America needs right now to unify the country. There are more people that hate her than the anti-Obama's. There are more people inspired by Obama than Hillary. There are more young votes involved for Obama than Hillary.

How does anyone come to the conclusion that the Clinton Campaign is pushing this story? Obama is not a Saint nor is he an Earth Angel sent by God. He is capable of making mistakes like everyone else. So, why can't the Obama supporters stop blaming negative press on the Clinton campaign. This is absolutely crazy. This man is not the answer that America is hoping for. I personally think that the Obama supporters are beginning to realize that the Dream that Obama has been talking about for almost a year is about to awaken to the reality of a nightmare- He is a FAKE.

I am growing sick of this campaign, it is on the verge of turning into politics as usual and it sucks. I believe all of us are joining in the fighting with each other like kids in a School yard, like anything we do is ever gonna make a difference in Washington to benefit the people.

I want McCain, vote Clinton, voteObama, and in the end democrat or republican, it all remains the same. No health care, Nafta in place, Amero on the rise, gas, Schools, Iraq, and everything else will continue to squeeze all that is left out of this Country. So do enjoy the fighting over the internet, because it will not compare to when you are standing in the food line to feed your family.

Peggy Goederer   March 3rd, 2008 5:45 pm ET

I'm seeing parallels between Barack Obama and Jimmy Carter, and wondering how far they go.

They're both men of high ideals seen as "outside" the political establishment campaigning at a time when the public is/was totally disgusted with the political establishment.

Jimmy Carter's presidency is generally viewed as a failure. My understanding is that part of the reason is that he refused to play the usual Washington "ball" game – trading favors for votes. He got in the way of the legislators and their pork, and they retaliated by refusing to let him accomplish anything.

You could say he was too moral.

I'm wondering whether Barack would encounter similar problems. Could he work effectively with our not very moral or idealistic legislature?

Latina Voter   March 3rd, 2008 5:44 pm ET

Finally, the media has showed some backbone. Because of the media Obama had been Flawless, but TRUE COLORS always show up in due time. Example: Real Estate dealings with Rezko, Conversation RE: NAFTA with a Canadian official for political reasons and a friend to an activist. HMMMMMM!!!! Mr. Words Matter. As you can see your actions are not high. ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THEN WORDS. It is easier to give a speech, then to make a decision. No one will ever no how you would of voted regarding the war. (With your voting record you would of voted present.) You did not have a voice at that time. So your going to have to say a lot more, then I was running for Senate at the time you were making your speech against the war. Your judgement is being tested now.

4Hillary   March 3rd, 2008 5:42 pm ET

Obama supporters – ask yourselves this:

1) If there was a "side deal" being made...Don't you think it is in the best interest of Canada to stick to the story the Obama camp is saying??

2) CTV has said they are "sticking to there story" about the meeting because they received the information from a valid source.

Last week Obama said that the "meeting never took place".....Today, when the AP got a hold of a copy of the memo now he says...."there was a meeting" but NAFTA was not discussed!?? Are you guys not concerned about this?? What if it is true?? You think the Bush years were bad...well you have seen nothing yet if Obama wins. Don't you think you deserve the "truth" before you vote??? I do.

Bill   March 3rd, 2008 5:42 pm ET

This is the type of negative campaigning that will truly hurt the Democratic party in the General election. If this discussion occurred while an Obama supporter was giving a tour, this is nothing more than an Obam supporter's view as to what Obama stated in the debate. That does not make it Obama's view. This Nafta statement by Clinton really is negative campaigning at its worst. Rush Limbaugh has said he wants to keep Clinton in the race because she will work harder to destroy Obama and go negative than any Republican would to win the presidency. That is how bad she wants this presidency....she is willing to destroy her own party. I do not argue her qualifications, but I do question her integrity and character. Dodd mentioned last week that neither party should go negative. Two days later she throws the "Are your babies safe" ad. Now, Nafta, and has inflamed an issue that seems like a pretty innocent conversation. The sad thing is Obama has not spent time going negative about not disclosing her tax returns to the public.

Oh here we go. First his words were misinterpreted. Now the conversations are being played down. This IS business as usual and not change we can believe in. Obama got a couple of slogans that resonated with the disgusted American people and he's been using these to prove his believability. Let's face it – Americans don't really know what he's really all about.

Puddytat   March 3rd, 2008 5:37 pm ET

I don't know why anybody would be worried about either one of the Dem.s beating McCain. McCain doesn't stand a chance against either one of them.

Republicans ELITES ... who drive that campaign ... have betrayed the American people too many times to think that they will ever be heard again.

November guarentees a big win for either Hillary OR Obama . That is why Hillary should take this all the way to a Brokered Convention ... cause it's a slam dunk for whichever the lucky Dem. nominee is . The people are not going to get behind McCain ... they never have and WON'T . For the RICH to cram McCain in the nose of their base was political suicide for the REPUBLICAN PARTY.

After the coronation of McCain , you can stick a fork in them ...they are done.

If any of them feel like I do ... after the coronation , the channel changes and there will be no news watched until Nov.'s election
when my vote goes to anyone BUT REPUBLICAN ... RIGHT DOWN THE THE TICKET.

What is that people want from their president. If they want to be uplifted, go to church every Sunday. Otherwise, think of what Obama has done, nothing, nada, zero, other and stood on the podium and made worthless speaches. Look at his voting record since he came to the senate. His voting rocord on Irag is exactly same. Just like every debate, he repeatedly said I agree with Hillary. I just wished Hillary should have let Obama answer the question on the new Russian leader. I think he knows absolutely nothing. I also don't like Obama pulling this strong arm on black politicians to back him. This is a racism at its worst. We let Obama get away with it. I just don't understand why is it that people in this country are so afraid of attacking prominent blacks. Being a president is different from being a preacher. I just want Americans to know that.

RG Torian   March 3rd, 2008 5:32 pm ET

The Canadian government denied any such understanding was made, denied that any official of the campaign had such a meeting. You Obama haters are so blind you can't even read! Obama did nothing wrong, this person was not doing the Obama campaign bidding, he was a private citizen speaking his own mind. You can't hang this on Obama but you can show some integrity and admit that Hillary and her prospective "co-president" husband lied before, during and after his 8 year term as president. We don't need that national nightmare again.

Sonya   March 3rd, 2008 5:32 pm ET

CNN is no longer a reputable source; if you want to be Pro-Clinton then stand in line with Fox News Network and state that you will be supporting Clinton 100% so that the American public is not duped into believing that your network is giving equal coverage.

Hillary Clinton is turning green, with jealousy that is! Not matter what crap she and her campaign "dig up" on Obama, it does nothing to sway voters – too bad!!! She has tried everything, and expects Obama to answer to all this and guess what, he does!!! He never swore that the meeting didn't happen, what he said was that the story that came out was not true (his statement was truthful). Then, when the real story came out, he commented on it. I hope all of you also took note that he did not jump up and down, he didn't get sarcastic, and he didn't cry the blues calling himself a victim. He addressed it and moved on. This is the kind of person who should be president.....not that raging maniac who cannot control herself, her husband, or her campaign (and you want her to be in charge of everyone's business).....no thanks. Come on Ohio and Texas – FINISH HER OFF! Obama '08

I wonder how much a state senator in Illinois earns per year? Must be enough to afford a $1.65 million house. Where did Obama get that money?

Independent in Texas   March 3rd, 2008 5:30 pm ET

We have Obama saying that was not what was stated or implied, we have Austan Goolsbee himslef state that was not what he said or implied, and WE HAVE THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT STATING THIS WAS NEVER STATED OR CONVEYED IN ANY WAY. In fact the Canadian government issued a statement dispelling this allegation.

We have Hillary still saying this is an issue and a concern. So many lies by Camp Clinton and so little time left.

Think before you vote   March 3rd, 2008 5:30 pm ET

Of course, the Obama camp must be wondering why ALL the negative stuff about Obama not come later, when the nomination has been clinched. If he is the intelligent person you think he is, then he should realize that ALL DIRT will be uncovered SOONER or later.

If Hillary does not stumble into things like this, then, you can count on McCain digging even deeper, and finding out SO MUCH UNBELIEVABLY MORE. It is tough to be in the public eye, since ALL CLOSETS WILL BE open. If Obama wanted to have closed closets , then you should not have run for office.

Senator Clinton has already undergone that painful process. And , not only did she survive but actually thrived to the dismay of many who think a woman should not be involved in historically male dominated affairs.

Clearly, senator Clinton deserves to be the NEXT president of the United States.

If Sen Clinton wins Ohio, Tex, Penn, RI and splits everywhere else by very narrow margins, Sen Obama and Sen Clinton will be virtually tied without the super delegates. So will the Obama people please stop saying Sen Clinton should drop out. Some of us are not caught up in the Obamania, aren't looking to elect a rock star, and are concerned about fabrication, dodging the issues and copy cat rhetoric and should have a chance to vote for our candidate. Both candidates have every right to take the fight to the convention, and we can end up a stronger party by ending up with both on the democratic ticket. Are all you Obama supporters saying if the ticket were Clinton/Obama you would stay home? Or are you going to vote for McCain and whoever he seconds? Not that I think Sen Obama is going to ask Sen Clinton to VP but if the ticket were Obama/Clinton what then?

He goes to the south and says: I care for all races and he goes to the east coast and says: I am liberal. The rethoric is really paying off but the question is for how long. Hey from Canada! I have been of course watching from the outside, namely from Canada. What I have observed is that Sexism is alive and well in the USA, Racism comes second. As well, the media has been very biased, hence the observation. When is the media going to stop the molly-coddling of Barrack Obama. From my viewpoint, it is the media who has put Mr. Obama on the petestal and has helped him with the Hilary bashing. Mrs. Clinton is a great politician and has done a lot for your people and country. The American people should be honored and proud in having her as President. She would make a Great President not to mention the fact that the Americans would be making history. When was the last time you had a former first lady run for president? I wish I had more space to write. Thanks for you time.

How is it that the Clinton campaign is criticizing Obama for his stand on NAFTA? Are our memories so short? Does anyone recall that it was President Clinton who signed NAFTA into law? Is there any evidence to suggest that Hillary opposed NAFTA then? There is certainly plenty of evidence to the contrary. Now they're accusing Obama of taking a stand for political expediency. Definitely a case of the pot calling the kettle black (no racial inference intended).
Aside from the outrageousness of the charge, I'd say this is a non-issue. They're both guilty. Call it a draw.

Canada owes Bill Clinton a BIG favor.

You see, when Bill was still President, and the french speaking province (ie. State) of Quebec was voting on a referendum about whether to separate from Canada or not, Bill Clinton staged a news conference with planted reporters and questions. Bill basically said the US would not support separation.

So now, Bill was in Canada on Saturday, asking to for a favor in return. Or maybe he was there to tell Canadian officials that Hillary was joking about NAFTA.

Has anyone noted what either of these 2 are saying about NAFTA in Texas. The answer is Nada, Zip, Zilch. Why? NAFTA happens to be popular in Texas. According the the WSJ (I won't plagerize), 1.6 million jobs have been created in TX in the last 10 years vs. a loss of 10K in Ohio. Exports from TX are 4 times what they are in Ohio. And TX has seen a net domestic migration of 667K vs. a negative 362K in Ohio (ex: foreign immigrants). NAFTA has helped in TX. Also helping in TX is a low tax rate and no personal income tax. Ohio ranks ahead of only 3 states in economic competitivenes – they have the 3rd highest corporate income tax and 4th higher personal income tax in the country.

Seems the argument in OH should be about much more than NAFTA. – but then neither of these 2 are advocating lower overall taxes. So instead, they use NAFTA as a stalking horse for much bigger problems.

The independent voters will be questioning the timing of Obamas bad press and Clintons good press. Amazing how the news turned on a dime after SNL slammed CNN and the next primary approached. Ok, seriously people. This is not American Idol. Obama may have that "rock star" appeal because the main stream media has made him out to be some sort of golden boy, but can you all really be that thick? The man is a liar. He's inexperienced and he will do major damage to this country. Remember the last President we had that was inexperienced? I believe you do, his name is George W. Bush. Do we really want another 4 years of Bushism's? Be smart! Get your facts straight and open your eyes or you are going to end up with a bunch of broken promises if Obama ever ends up as President.

Another thing, most of Obama's wins are coming from Republicans who no longer have to vote for McCain since he has all be wrapped up the nomination. They are doing this knowing that Obama is the weaker choice and that there is no chance in hell they will vote for him in November. They don't want Hillary to win because they know she is the only one who has a chance to beat their "McOldy".

So say NObama and YES to Hillary!

VOTE HILLARY!!!!!! The only candidate who can bring about REAL change that this country needs!! Not empty rhetoric like Obama. He needs to drop out of the race ASAP so the Democrats can put their focus on Hillary defeating McCain in November.

GO HILLARY GO!!!!

I was undecided until this latest attack from Hillary's camp. I have just decided to vote for Obama. He could throw so much garbage at her, but he doesn't and she slings mud daily and it's sickening. She is turning a lot of people off by this, but she doesn't have a clue. I think the country is sick and tired of this kind of cheap politics, called the Clintons. By the way the Candian government was on tv and has denied this attack by Hillary and her arm waving ridiculous tactics. I think the American people from Texas and Ohio are going to send a loud message to Hillary Clinton tomorrow and I don't think she's gonna like it. I know I am.

Go Away   March 3rd, 2008 5:05 pm ET

liars, sleazy, shrill, plastic, angry, psycotic, condescending,
need I go on about Billary?

Rudy F.   March 3rd, 2008 5:05 pm ET

Can ONN (Obama News Network), I mean CNN, bury this story more? This is relevant news that says a lot about the true nature of the Obama campaign.

Abe   March 3rd, 2008 5:04 pm ET

FInally people will see he is a politician like everyone else and says stuff just to win points. If this had been Hillary people would have been going nuts over this but with Obama we will just let him tell us what he ment to say. At three in the morning you dont get a second chance to explain.

VOTE HILLARY

CHANGE+Experience

p.s isn't he calling the Canadians liers?

Canadian   March 3rd, 2008 5:04 pm ET

Come on you coward. You can blame a lot on Hillary, but for once be a man and admit, we cant really trust what you're saying because its just politics as usual right Obama.

We do NOT want you to be out President.

Vote for Hillary.

pat   March 3rd, 2008 5:03 pm ET

The "MEMO" is a lie... People, wake up to smell the coffee. Words do not matter. No proof it is real. Obama's fingerprints are not on it,

Mani, NJ   March 3rd, 2008 5:02 pm ET

This is not a popularity contest, its a crucial election that is going to decide our future and our children's future. If we Americans actually thought of it this way, we would not even give Obama the time of day. He is a nobody with no ideas for this country. Yes, he is cool and witty but he is not suited to be our president. Hillary will do just as Bill did, she will clean up the mess in this country. She is only in this election because she cares about this country otherwise she really does not need the crap she gets from everyone.

Go Away   March 3rd, 2008 5:02 pm ET

sounds like a ROOKIE MISTAKE.. something we could expect MANY of if he gets nomination and presidency. he thinks he can say nothing wrong, his words are golden.. reality check mr. obama. why don't YOU drop out.

BSC   March 3rd, 2008 5:01 pm ET

This is a true story. Also, this is why people should be thinking twice about Obama. He is not ready to lead this great country.

Eli   March 3rd, 2008 5:01 pm ET

We can argue back and forth about this NAFTA thing and neither side can say what truely happened, but the TRUE FACT that can not be wrong is that OBAMA said at first he pr his campaign had not spoken with them (he denied this several times). Now we find out he did speak with them but they misunderstood him.

Barney, Long Island   March 3rd, 2008 5:00 pm ET

Texas, Ohio, Rhode Island: Don't trust this guy and fall for his phoney baloney speeches. Vermont fits in with Obamamania..You people are too smart to fall for his tactics.

Bill   March 3rd, 2008 5:00 pm ET

By the way, MSNBC has reported that the Canadian Parliment was arguing about this issue today, not denying that the meeting took place.

The point is, Obama said one thing to voters, why his top adviser on this issue is telling another government something else. This is not the kind of politics we need.

steve   March 3rd, 2008 5:00 pm ET

Deborah,

We want Hillary, all of us, all of us who have voted and will vote for her tomorrow.

Clinton won 8,558,402 votes in the first 25 Democratic primaries, 229,220 more than Illinois Senator Barack Obama. Of the total votes cast for the two Democratic leaders, Clinton had 50.7 percent and Obama 49.3 percent, acording the the polls.

JP SW   March 3rd, 2008 5:00 pm ET

It will too late to have buyer's remorse after the details the Feds have on Obama come out.

Don't stick your head in the sand and deny what the memo said was true when Obama's adviser met with officials in Canada. Canada does not want an incident because that memo was released and they are taking the heat. It's true and the meeting was recorded.

Hillary Clinton for President!

Bebe   March 3rd, 2008 4:59 pm ET

OBAMA campt did not downplay this issue . It was denied by him and the Canadian Government. It would be nice if CNN could report the news accurately fro Obama as it does for Hillary Clinton. It is the most biased network for political news. All for Clinton. Only negative news is reported againand agin on Obama but CLinton just gets a blip on the negatives and the repetition on the positves if there is any at aall.

John Clinton   March 3rd, 2008 4:59 pm ET

That Canadian official was a PLANT! That was a PLANTED question.

Just like in Iowa and Wisconsin!

Don't trust anything from the Clintons.

As well, get the facts straight. Clinton is using a candid conversation during University tour visit as a silver bullet.

Sharon Moody SC   March 3rd, 2008 4:55 pm ET

It's amazing how when Hillary cried fowl blaming the media for what she considered unfair coverage how quickly they responded and the old "dump truck" effect backed right in on Senator OBama. Ironically or strategically, which I personally believe, in the final hours of Super Tuesday 2. How about showing the video that show Canadian Governemnt Officials angrily denying allegations tied to this so called memoand taking a firm stance on the culprit that started all these rumors against Senator OBama. This would at least let American's see both sides of the story but of course that would be too much like right. How about the media get back to being fair and impartial and please media personnel stop campaigning for Hillary Clinton.

Bill   March 3rd, 2008 4:54 pm ET

No one who supports Clinton is confused here. No one has said Obama met with these officials. The problem here is that when asked Obama and his campaign denied this ever happened. Now that its come to light, they are saying it did happen, but we are misunderstanding. So, its one or the other. The problem is it now shows that you can not trust Obama 100%..They could have admitted last week, but knew that would harm him, especially since Obama was busy attacking Clinton on NAFTA.
The issue here is he could have told the truth last week. NEW POLITICS. HE did not. Change we can not believe in, because its buisness as usual.

Ron   March 3rd, 2008 4:54 pm ET

I ask everyone who reads this..HAVE YOU EVER BEEN IN A ROOM WITH 4 OTHER PEOPLE WHEN SOMETHING IS DISCUSSED, AND WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT IT LATER, EVERYBODY HAS A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT INTERPETATION OF WHAT WAS DISCUSSED??? Frankly it was kind of dumb for both Hillary and Barack to say they would consider dropping out of NAFTA. They both know AIN'T NO WAY it is going to happen!!! There may be a little tweaking, but the U.S. will not withdraw from it completey, no matter who is the President.

Black Female Voter....   March 3rd, 2008 4:53 pm ET

I am NOT voting for Obama, he makes me puke! I am not going to be pressured into voting for him just because he has brown skin! He is patronizing the Black Community by impersonating a Black Preacher, he's not, so why does he give sermons? What a croc of crap! What happened to separation of Church and State? This guy doesn't know anything about being Black or White for that matter....How can this country even consider him?

If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything and I'm not falling for Obama!

Vote for Hillary! She’s our only hope!

KE   March 3rd, 2008 4:50 pm ET

Sens. Feinstein was on Fox news yesterday speaking up for Hillary. Very good.

It is sad that at this stage of this election year crdibility of the candidate is still a major issue. Let's move on! Hillary is the future.

Larry, GA   March 3rd, 2008 4:50 pm ET

This really only helps Sen. John McCain. Many people already believe that Sen. Hillary Clinton is a proven liar (tried and true, proven and tested). If they start to believe that Sen. Barack Obama is one as well, it will only help the Republicans.

Krissy   March 3rd, 2008 4:50 pm ET

Hillary is so desperate! The confusion has been cleared up by Canadian officials. She lives in the mud, and wants to bring the whole country into the mess with her.

OBAMA 08!

Spirit of America   March 3rd, 2008 4:49 pm ET

OHIO, are you listening? The truth may be late, but it is still liberating. Why vote for anyone who supports legislation which cost Ohio tens of thousands of good jobs? Don't fall into the abyss tomorrow. Don't promote hypocrisy and NAFTA. Help make Ohio (and America) beautiful again. Put a woman, the only one who really opposes NAFTA, in the White House.

steve   March 3rd, 2008 4:49 pm ET

knew this all along- Obama is deceptive. Worst than a liar.
I can believe Americans can be fooled by this guy.

The truth will set us free. Obama can run but he can’t hide

Todd   March 3rd, 2008 4:47 pm ET

The Canadian government has abosolutely confirmed this meeting through their memo–some people posted here that they were denying it those people are mistaken. Obama did this and must be held responsible.

Martin   March 3rd, 2008 4:47 pm ET

Ok, so you are racist if you say anything about Obama. What about black people demanding that other blacks vote for Obama. This should be about the issues not black and white. If it was the other way around and Clinton supporters were saying "All white people should vote for Clinton, because this is our time," people would freak out. Obama lied, got caught, and then blamed it on Clinton.

Jack   March 3rd, 2008 4:45 pm ET

It's a disgrace that CNN is reporting so heavily on these two stories today - both of these stories, the Canadian thing and the Rezko thing - are weeks old.

Shame on you, CNN.

Penny Libby - Micco Florida   March 3rd, 2008 4:45 pm ET

Barack Obama is basing his campaign on judgement. His judgement was wrong on this issue and it was wrong on Rezko. Sen. Obama admits he made a mistake in his dealing with Tony Rezko.

What is there to say about that other than his judgement is not quite as squeaky clean as he claims. He needs to tell the truth about NAFTA and his land dealing with Rezko. THis is not last minute distractions ... he is holding up his campaign with Judgement. HMMM!

Donna   March 3rd, 2008 4:45 pm ET

The Obama supporter need to wake up! Hillary did not put this out. Obama got caught and now as usual is trying to swim his way out. The guy is a horrible liar!

Hillary is the best choice for president!

SH   March 3rd, 2008 4:45 pm ET

Canadian news media reported on this when it happened, go look it up.

GetReal   March 3rd, 2008 4:44 pm ET

Senator Obama is back peddling again just like on campaign financing!!

Todd   March 3rd, 2008 4:44 pm ET

This is the most incredible outrage. The press needs to really look into this, because it WAS an important person in Obama's campaign who spoke to the Canadian consulate, and he DID tell them a very different thing than he's been telling voters.

OBAMA CANNOT BE TRUSTED.

Mike   March 3rd, 2008 4:44 pm ET

These posts are pointless, it's just people who support one or the other spewing garbage.

Belle   March 3rd, 2008 4:44 pm ET

HEY CNN!!!!!!!!

You HAVE BEEN REPORTING FOR WEEKS THAT NEITHER DEMOCRAT CAN GET ENOUGH DELEGATES TO WIN!!!!!!!!

However, If Clinton loses Texas by a few delegates, but WINS OHIO and Pennyslvania....THIS IS A DIFFERENT BALLGAME!!!!!!!!!

Plant   March 3rd, 2008 4:43 pm ET

The Canadian official was a PLANT! That was a PLANTED question.

Just like in Iowa and Wisconsin!

Don't trust anything from the Clintons.

Y.Lee   March 3rd, 2008 4:43 pm ET

Could you guys at CNN stop with the strong adjectives on your political headlines? SLAMS BLASTS HAMMERS, this is stupid. They are overused "descriptions' that have lost their definition in the political arena. You guys study English for a living, why don't you use it?

MJ   March 3rd, 2008 4:42 pm ET

What about the release from Canada saying it was their mistake?

Jed in Texas   March 3rd, 2008 4:42 pm ET

And you didnt believe Dennis or Ron Paul when they said you will be lied to and often by Hillary,Obama and McCain.

Switcher   March 3rd, 2008 4:40 pm ET

I SWITCHED TO HILLARY a long time ago. Come join me!

Reggy   March 3rd, 2008 4:39 pm ET

People! This is only an attempt by Hillary to get the NAFTA subject off of her. Her support of NAFTA was exposed by Obama and now she is crying like a baby and acting like a kid. Why when something negative comes out it has Hillarys name wrote on it. I might as well call Hillary supporters a bunch of BATS, because you people are blind. So since you are blind direct your RADAR to voting for Obama.

Go Obama

gozinct   March 3rd, 2008 4:38 pm ET

You can either support Clinton or Obama, or McCain for that matter, but please do not use the tidbits of vile that each campaign has dispensed for your arguments. Have you forgotten that all politicians will lie to get what they want? Hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent to get our votes. That fact is the only thing that gives me hope that average Americans may have a say about the uncertain future. They need us! Let us use our collective voice to push issues on which we can all agree: education, economy, good jobs, health care, peace, and security. In recent elections divisive issue like abortion and gay rights have confused large blocks of voters. These are two issues that, not unlike the Clinton/Obama debate going on here, cannot be settled. When all is said and done we will vote for the person who will do the best for us individually. That may mean different things to different people, but please let us just (as the song says) accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative. That will make us all feel better when the race has ended.

Deborah   March 3rd, 2008 4:38 pm ET

WE do not want you Hillary

GO HOME

Go OBAMA 2008!!!!!!

HG   March 3rd, 2008 4:38 pm ET

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-what horrible coverage by CNN, look at this ticker almost every article is related to Clinton. I can see why Bill Cunningham called it the ClintonNewsNetwork.

CNN WATCHER   March 3rd, 2008 4:38 pm ET

This is a major gaffe by Obama. It shows that he is all words an empty suit and will say anything to get elected. It goes to the heart of his character and shows that at the heart he is just another dishonest politician. Worse thatn that he is a politician that lacks any expereince and has dupped many people. He had it right in his debate when he characterized his supporters as dillusional. He has deluded them into thinking that hi is honest and or capable. Obama is nether. Please put an end to this campaign Texas, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Vermont, and vote for Hillary Clinton. As much as her detractors discredit her she is a tough and capable women. Men stop voting against her becasue she is a women . It is time to have a female president and HRC is more then capable. Women you may not get another chance to vote for a female presidental candidate i your lifetime. HRC is cabable and qualified. Please men and women do not be afraid of a strong women. She is a great role model for the YOUNG WOMEN of America. Dad's who have daughters show your daughters that a girl can be anything that she wants to be in this country. What greater shining light can we be for the Taliban who discriminate against woemn. Lets role lets do it!

Sharon, Raleigh NC   March 3rd, 2008 4:38 pm ET

I have never in my lifetime seen such blind allegiance to a person, particulary a POLITICAN.

I don't beleive Hillary Clinton's campaign had anything to do with the Obama campaign talking to the Canadians about NAFTA. Let's take Hillary out of this story and Obama supporters just THINK at least for ten seconds that Obama is not this perfect individual sent her from above to save us and that some things that comes from his campaing and his mouth is not always 100% true.

If he wins the nomination and his "policy flip flops" and his "Chicago dealings" come out who will you blame then?

pat   March 3rd, 2008 4:37 pm ET

It is only a matter of time before Barack Obama faces a comedown after the emotion he's "inspired" in the U.S. presidential nomination race.
Soon he Will Have Nowhere to Go But Down, if not against Hillary but certainly against MaCain.

At some point his free ride wil end, just like any other "superstar".

Obama, you cannot be elected president if you do not withstand the tough questions, how long are you are going to pretend no to know about Rezko?, to double talk to get out of tough questions? , to use the race card?

Obama you already fooled the people you were going to fool. Supporters are starting to suffer from the Obama Comedown Syndrome, and are starting to ask questions, such as, tell us your plans to deliver on sweeping promises to unite the country, bridge the racial divide and break the partisan logjam in the U.S. capital?; an so far Obama has been mute about specifics. Why?

Eunice, Maryland   March 3rd, 2008 4:37 pm ET

Down playing real issues is typical of Obama style. He hates it whenever the truth comes out about him. Once again he has lied to American people. Obama is two faced. He will tell voters anything to get their vote. I am an African woman living in America but I feel very sorry for America if this man wins election.

Wake up America.

Teresa   March 3rd, 2008 4:37 pm ET

I just read the Canadian article for this comment and I must say Hillary has a lot of apologies to make first to the Canadians, the Obama campaign, and to the trusted voters who voted for her. If she does stuff like this to incriminate others, I could imagine what she'll do in office. This little fiasco just lost her thousand of votes. Not only did she embarrased herself but the people that endorsed her. Not to mention this may create a national incident over just words.

Toyin, Marietta, GA   March 3rd, 2008 4:36 pm ET

so if one of Clinton's adviser make i comment, i should hold her responsible for it? Basically some are saying don't vote for Obama because his advisor said something.

Joe   March 3rd, 2008 4:36 pm ET

Obama has been Mr. Flawless. Of course we're told since childhood, "If it seems too good to be true, it's too good to be true." A vote for Obama is a wasted vote.

Hillary '08!

Annamica, OH   March 3rd, 2008 4:36 pm ET

Finally, the media has showed some backbone. Obama lied to you Ohio, stick with Hillary!

Democrat08   March 3rd, 2008 4:36 pm ET

Sen. Durbin just went on television and said that there was no meeting. The Obama campaign needs to get its talking points straight.

mike   March 3rd, 2008 4:36 pm ET

Look who got caught with his pants pulled down. Just shows his lack of experience and now he is blatantly lying about it. All politicians are the same. Obama is no Messiah, and like it or not Clinton is tougher. She is the best candidate to get in the ring and slug it out with the republicans. That's what it will take to beat McCaine.

kaylee   March 3rd, 2008 4:36 pm ET

Don't give a CANADIAN official this much power.
OHIO and Texas please vote Obama!

Thsi should be rejected by voters for a Canadian politician, with an unknown agenda, interject himself in our presidential election. He probably wants a pro-NAFTA candidate (not Obama) to win the elections.

Obama '08

Alice Rea   March 3rd, 2008 4:36 pm ET

Hillary will beat McCain if this is the case.
Obama is too weak of a candidate in debates and one one one.

Too many unknowns about Obama before the election in November to take the risk.

Jenny from IN   March 3rd, 2008 4:36 pm ET

Wow... all I see on here is the desperation of the Clinton camp and her supporters.

I guess you'll spin everything you hear into something that isn't true to get Hillary elected.

Much like Hillary herself, it's sleezy.

He didn't have a meeting with the Canadians. It was informal. The Hillary camp has pushed lies before to try and get elected.

Hillary is LUCKY Obama is enough of a competitor to not have to dig up ALL THE NUMEROUS SKELETONS IN HER CLOSET.

Obama '08

Eli   March 3rd, 2008 4:35 pm ET

CLINTON going negative again because she has pointed out another Obama lie. Obama the golden boy getting a little bronze. Keep on and before long he will be just dirty, like his good friend(you know the indicted one, the one that sold OBAMA his home for 300,000.00 below value and on the same day paid full price for the one next door for himself) HILLARY08

Kshama   March 3rd, 2008 4:35 pm ET

Fact Check:

The Canadian news channel released the details after the Obama camp denied any such conversation took place. Now the story by the Obama camp is that the conversation took place but there seems to have been some miscommunication? Then, the Obama camp accuses Hillary Clinton of deceitful tactics and says this is her campaign's way of throwing the kitchen sink>.

HMMMM.. Everything that happens to Obama is Senator Hillary Clinton's fault. Well, I know folks it's hard tobelieve, but we actually have an "angel" in Obama amongst all of us "corrupted" citizens.

Texas Terry   March 3rd, 2008 4:35 pm ET

I really like that Obama is serious looking in the picture accompanying this article...... As if he is not as "full of himself" when someone from his campaign at a crucial time has done something stupid. I've heard a lot of things that have come out recently now that many are searching for "things that are not right with Obama's campaign". If you have your ears and eyes open maybe some of this will sink in and you will realize Obama is not the candidate you thought he was.

Clinton for President!

Ian   March 3rd, 2008 4:34 pm ET

Just goes to show that Obama will make an excellent president. He's got the duck and move maneuver down pat. I guess his idea of changes is just telling a new set of lies.

Chuck   March 3rd, 2008 4:34 pm ET

Wow, Obama is starting to fall, and he is not dealing with it well. I give him a month before the MSM turns on him.

frank   March 3rd, 2008 4:34 pm ET

once again obama supporters.... this shows what kind of phony obama is... he is blinding you all with is speeches of change.. as it turns out it is barack obama will who will say anything to get elected.....

justin   March 3rd, 2008 4:34 pm ET

Everyone needs to realize that cnn, nbc, msnbc, and every network has nothing to talk about for 24hrs. lets get the facts right! An obama official was walking on a tour and having a conversation. The conversation and supposed memo said "he (obama) was not in any way saying that he would completely remove Canada from trade agreements,so Canada need not be concerned about news reports of his trade policy because there have not been any meetings to discuss so yes in fact it is politcal talk, because neither candidate can meet with Canada and do anything"

all of you sheepish people who watch the tv tube and find something from Hilary to bait you into, maybe you should stop and wait to see how quickly hillary is "honored" to be with Obama after he wins the nomination and all of a sudden she is on board witht he democratic party. its called the kitchen sink. Obama has a lot of 'supposeds" but he has not been tied with anything but talks from rezco, canada, maybes with louise farrakhan and ect. I mean dang, what else did he supposed do? he was a muslim, an anti-christ ect. just admit you dont like the black man and we can get past the "silly season"

OBAMA 08

Chinese Lobbyist   March 3rd, 2008 4:34 pm ET

The Clinton's have been nice to China. Good trade and military policies. Please re-elect Hillary so that we continue to make *affordable* products for US and so that our military can grow to match yours.

Vote Hillary

ray c. N.S. Canada   March 3rd, 2008 4:34 pm ET

The democratic race for nominee has been exciting for Canadians at most all levels. I wish to add only to this blog that those who resort to fear, can only do so by actually circumventing truth and righteousness. For the two cannot mix. If any one candidate stands out in such a manner, one must consider where the root of their deliverance is coming. One will not make sound or righteous decisions if they are grounded in a manner such as fear. If fear should be used successfully, what would incline you to think this tactic will not be used again, when pushed? Wisdom and prudence is seldom availed by such tactics.

Bill   March 3rd, 2008 4:34 pm ET

I can not believe the comments I am hearing from the Obama supporters.

Take credit when you guys do something, but denial when something like this comes out. How does this become Hillary's fault. Obama attacked her on NAFTA and then lied about this memo. For those of you claiming its not true, you must not be watching the news because everyone is covering it and it is true. Point is that Obama people met, then Obama and his campaign lied. Of course they are backing off this now. Also, how does this make CNN racist? If someone lies it does not matter what color they are.

There are many questions out there. This started a week ago and they tried to cover their butts and failed. It seems that while our press has had a love affair, not everyone has.

You have to ask yourself was all the speeches just a ploy to get your vote. Obama supporters, be big enough to admit that your man can be wrong. How about his campaign and supporters threatening black delegates for Clinton? This is not right either.

Hillary Clinton has never been charged with any crime. There has never been any evidence that she has ever done anything wrong. You can write about old scandals all day, but they are all gossip and not real. This is real. The memo states clearly that Obama was poltical positioning on NAFTA. Can you trust that nothing else has a political spin from this campaign.

We need real leadership. Obama is not ready and Hillary Clinton is.

Hillary 08

Brian   March 3rd, 2008 4:34 pm ET

Hillary Clinton flat out sucks. If she gets the nomination, this party will be in ruins.

Krishna & Ranga   March 3rd, 2008 4:33 pm ET

Folks consider this. Obama says he did not know what his adviser was telling the Canadian official. How are we to trust his judgement as President when he is not aware of what is happening around him much less what is happening in this wide world.

ALEX MORALES   March 3rd, 2008 4:33 pm ET

TEXAS FOR HILLARY! Obama uses words to win votes, his lying came through this time and was proved. The guy is a great guy, but its not so gret to decieve people simply because you want to win the election. We can't afford to just "hope" ...there is hope in everyone...we are not in the luxury with the problems we face...to put someone in office and hope. We need a track record and a strong candidate. WAKE UP and VOTE HILARAY!

Kirby Lafayette La.   March 3rd, 2008 4:33 pm ET

Hey cali indie, look @ your state's condition, now imagine it getting much worse if Mcain or clinton gets into office. African americans are used to bad economy dealings , job loss , & all other hardships. So those of you who are hurting due to mindless politicians keep voting the way you are and find yourself stuck in another rut for 4 more years. One would think you all learned a valuable lesson over the last 8 years. Geniuses.

Kate   March 3rd, 2008 4:33 pm ET

THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY WILL BE DONE AGAIN AFTER THE CLINTONS HAVE HAD THEIR WAY WITH IT ..

Mike   March 3rd, 2008 4:33 pm ET

It will be such a joy to have so much space on this threat that's not filled with Obama supprorters aka "cry babies..."

So naive.

Come March 4th, Hillary will once again prove that she is the "come back kid."

Hillary 08!

Stewie   March 3rd, 2008 4:33 pm ET

I don't understand ANY of the Clinton supporters.

These words about NAFTA by Obama's economic advisor are a CHARACTERIZATION, almost word of mouth, and they were never uttered by the candidate himself.

What Clinton supporters forget is that Clinton DID support NAFTA many, many times, and that Obama himself confronted her during the debate and all we heard from her were excuses and crickets.

She should not open her mouth to accuse him now. She will continue to portray herself as a hypocrite of the grandest kind.

This is all part of her desperate strategy to revive her moribund campaign. To quote her: SHAME ON YOU, HILLARY!

Martha   March 3rd, 2008 4:33 pm ET

I have a slight feeling that this may not get published by CNN (Clinton News Network) but you all need to tune in the most recent news, it seems like you are following the issues from behind and in news media nano-second matters. Canadian government is flatly denying this. Tune in then let's talk again. Hillary is going down, poor freak!

LatinoNation   March 3rd, 2008 4:33 pm ET

you want this thing to continue until the convention.

This allegation was already proven false.

Don't swallow the press.

I am done with your network

CNN your headlines are false and misleading!!

Again, just smoke and mirrors to distract the voters from the real issues at hand which is the war and economy and in this country. Same old tactics that will not work this time because the people are focus on the real issues at hand.

I to will vote for McCain if Billary wins...

One lady told me that if Hillary wins she is moving to Australia....

Go Obama!!!!

ww-New York   March 3rd, 2008 4:32 pm ET

How funny! Hillary cries and the media, change their focus off her "do anything" motto! UNREAL.. How quickly people forget how the Clintons have lied and still will do anything! I can't stand this. I'm so sick of the Clintons. Let's discuss the case "HILLARY" is involved in. All the news about Obama doesn't have proof. However "Hillary" is a part of a case!

Mark, Newfoundland, Canada   March 3rd, 2008 4:32 pm ET

I hope someone else has said it here too but neither of the two of them have any intention of renegotiating NAFTA. They are both just acting like they would to please voters in Ohio. Neither of the two of them want to renegotiate NAFTA because NAFTA helps the rich and the rich pay for these people to get elected.

Get real. Both of them are liars just like every other politician in your country and my country and any country in the G8. I really hope someday you all will see that and unite behind a real cause, that real cause being, humanity. As opposed to right now, we the right and the left are too busy arguing with each other but unimportant issues like abortion, gay rights, Iraq, terrorism, when they should be focusing on the economy, education and health care and actually trying to get control of your goverment back from the corporations.

What scares me is that it may be too late and you all better pray to whatever God you believe in because the big empire is about to fall and it is going to get nasty and make the great depression look like the best economic times ever.

We need a revolution before we are all poor slaves to the rich elite or before we are all dead from starvation and disease.

And remember, all empires fall, all of them. History as always showed us that.

Jayson   March 3rd, 2008 4:32 pm ET

He should speak to someone in Canada and ask why they are moving away from such a "fine" government healthcare program....

ALEX MORALES   March 3rd, 2008 4:32 pm ET

Obama uses words to win votes, his lying came through this time and was proved. The guy is a great guy, but its not so gret to decieve people simply because you want to win the election. We can't afford to just "hope" ...there is hope in everyone...we are not in the luxury with the problems we face...to put someone in office and hope. We need a track record and a strong candidate. WAKE UP and VOTE HILARAY!

alison   March 3rd, 2008 4:31 pm ET

why doesn't CNN show the Canadian Parliament today – the actual members of Parliment are getting up to speal and each speaker is supporting Sen Obama's story and saying this is being engineered through the government of Canada and there is no truth to this story

and why isn't CNN reporting on the fact that Bill Clinton was in Canada Saturday night ?

And who is Brenda Stronach – a minister in Canada and her connection to Bill Clinton

PEOPLE – THIS IS DIRTY TRICKS 101–

Oh boy, this truly shows just how hypocritical Obama is. HE started the negative attack ads (with untrue information), HE COPIED her "red phone" ad, so what does this show me about him? HE'S A "COPY CAT".

Barack, GET OVER IRAQ!!! Give us something NEW to hear. Your stance on NAFTA is false as well. I believe millions of Americans have heard David Gergen, DeeDee Myers and many others state "Hillary DID OPPOSE NAFTA while her husband was President." I'm sorry if your "followers" can't understand the fact that it would be using poor judgement for the "First Lady" to openly disagree with her husband, the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES! Get real, get an education! Also, I have done research on the CTV, both online and with friends who live in Canada. They tell me it is true what was reported, Obama was just giving lip service to Ohio voters.

What about Obama's pal, Rezco? I for one wish CNN would have done some reporting on this a long time ago.

What about Oprah stating kids in the US are spoiled? Then standing on the stage in Iowa to state "We as black people need to stand behind this black man", that isn't racist?

I could go on, like forever, but I feel like I'm gonna barf from all the Hillary bashing, uneducated (can't spell and rotten grammar) Rev. Jim Jones style (Don't know who he is? LOOK IT UP!) Obama groupies out there! At least Clinton supporters don't swear, and spew hateful, "words" from their mouths or posts

smart grrl in ls mo   March 3rd, 2008 4:31 pm ET

Sacha   March 3rd, 2008 4:30 pm ET

I'm reading this from the other side of the Atlantic, and this does seem like a mountain out of a mole hill. The Canadians deny anything dodgy really happened, Clinton is running round like a rabid dog trying to get a bite, and Obama is getting flack for something a junior advisor might have said.

All seems a bit strange

Alice Rea   March 3rd, 2008 4:30 pm ET

Thank you CNN

Kenneth Matthews   March 3rd, 2008 4:30 pm ET

I am watching MSNBC and they are showing a clip where the Canadian Legislature is denying the information given in the letter. They continue to show the clip, but on CNN I do not see it. More of the Bias News

don from Canada   March 3rd, 2008 4:29 pm ET

The real fact that the Canadian news (CTV) reported was that the Clinton and Obama camps both met with the Canadian government to tell them that they were talking tough on NAFTA but that this was more political positioning than substance so you should report the whole story. Clinton is just as guilty in this as Obama. Also one note: the current Canadian government has strong ties with the Bush/Republican government and this makes me wonder if they released this to hurt Obama's campaign because Obama has the only real chance to beat McCain in November? This is just a thought!

suz   March 3rd, 2008 4:29 pm ET

gee do ya think that soundbite w/hillary wasn't a mistake but that CNN intentionally muted the audio on that? CNN has become shameful. if it was in their interest to play it again w/sound, they would have done so already.

Joseph Claghorn   March 3rd, 2008 4:29 pm ET

I'm surprised out how much name calling is going on blogs like this. Are democrats that filled with animosity towards two obviously good candidates? What disturbs me most about this story is the fact that the representative of a foreign government leaked to the AP a recollection of an informal conversation on the eve of a major election, with obvious political ramifications.

4Hillary   March 3rd, 2008 4:28 pm ET

To all the Obama followers... PLEASE USE YOUR INTELLIGENCE AND READ THE REPORT ABOVE!

IT DOES NOT SAY HILLARY'S CAMPAIGN IS MAKING IT UP, IT SAY's A CANADIAN TV (since CNN, MSNBC, FOX are drooling over Obama)
Reported this. The AP obtained a memo today that was sent to Canadian officials after the meeting took place that highlights all the talking points fot he meeting!! Hillary has every right to request that he come clean!! The American people have every right to know whether he is making side deals with other countries. No wonder he was attacking Hillary on this....LOL he thought he had it all worked out!!

OHIO, TEXAS, RHODE ISLAND, & VERMONT HAVE THE RIGHT TO KNOW ABOUT THIS "SIDE DEAL".

Goo Hillary!!!

Rodney Dallas, TX   March 3rd, 2008 4:28 pm ET

I am an Obama supporter but I don't like this. Why is anyone in his camp meeting with any foreign countries about his positions as president? He is not the president yet. He needs to concentrate on winning these elections on March 4th. He needs to knock Hillary out of this race and then turn his attention to Senator McCain. Obama it turns out is a cocky little something. You don't act like you are the champion until you win the title. He should not be talking to any nations about his potential presidential policies until he is elected as President in November and not a day sooner. He needs to humble himself because the game ain't over yet. I think he is the best candidate for the job but he is a little too arrogant. Maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea for Hillary to win a couple of contests tomorrow because he is getting too big for his britches.

DJW   March 3rd, 2008 4:28 pm ET

Hiilary's people are just desparate – what do you think this will do to the party??? I am not voting for her if she steals it!!!

Joe   March 3rd, 2008 4:28 pm ET

Deirdre get over yourself. How is this playing the race card? Telling fact and the truth about Obama is playing the race card? Obama and all his followers have played the race card very well during this campaign and now you're going to try it out on this one? PLEASE! This is why the voters are taking a second look at Obama.

viv   March 3rd, 2008 4:28 pm ET

MY COMMENT IS...HAVE YOU NOTICED HOW EVEN THOUGH THE NEWS ARE TALKING ABOUT SENATOR OBAMA THEY MANAGE TO PUT EITHER A PICTURE OF HILLARY OR A CLIP OF HER IN THE BACKGROUND!

SUBLIMINAL MESSAGE!!.....

I THINK THE CLINTON CAMPAIGN IS THROWING ACCUSATIONS LEFT AND RIGHT ABOUT OBAMA BECAUSE THEY CLEARLY KNOW THEY ARE LOSING THE BATTLE.

elaine   March 3rd, 2008 4:27 pm ET

Ashley, doubt it very much if Obama's campaign would stoop to Hillary Clinton's tactics. The fact that he is running a positive campaign and realizes he doen't have to, is why I'm voting for him. Hillary Clinton imo has disgusted a lot of people with her rants and whining and accusations. When will she ever get over herself? sigh.

Mark, Austin, Texas   March 3rd, 2008 4:27 pm ET

This is what Canada says about this story:

"In the recent report produced by the consulate general in Chicago, there was no intention to convey, in any way, that Senator Obama and his campaign team were taking a different position in public from views expressed in private, including about NAFTA," said a foreign ministry spokesman."

Clinton Is Lame   March 3rd, 2008 4:27 pm ET

People need to look at the facts.
Canada has alot to loose with obama's stance on nafta
Canada has a Conservertive government
Canada prefers a Republican in the whitehouse than a Democrat
So what better way to slowdown the obama train and ensure the most likely democratic candidate to win the white house goes the oppostite direction in the polls

Praetorian, Ft. Myers,FL   March 3rd, 2008 4:27 pm ET

I'm an independant...now.
Previously I was a life-long Democrat.
After my Florida Primary voting rights were pulled by the DNC–and the extreme left wing agenda's of the current two contenders===each trying to out-do themselves on social "gimmes"...I've switched. I swear it looks like they are campaigning for the illegal alien vote!

Clinton and Obama have a new program for every problem that comes upon the horizon–along with large checks from Uncle Sam, and more and more involvement of the Federal Government in our daily lives.

When John Edwards left...so did the last remnants of character and truth–and any realistic hope of achieving change–without bankrupting the nation or suppressing independant achievment and free enterprise.

John McCain promises to deliver change–without the destruction of the values and traditions our nation holds dear–particularly free-enterprise and individual responsibility.

Margaret   March 3rd, 2008 4:26 pm ET

More deception from Obama.

Last week Obama claimed there wasn't a meeting.
Now – after the Canadian government has CONFIRMED the meeting -
Obama says it wasn't an "official" meeting.
LOL

In our house – we call that LYING.

Oblahma is a con – and a media creation.
He can't even influence Senate Dems – much less save the world.

D.   March 3rd, 2008 4:26 pm ET

LIAR, Official or unofficial, this showed what true color Obama is. He's no different from other politicians. Wake Up people. He CANNOT bring changes.

Ooop, now the Obama camp needs to blame Hillary for this! Freak!

Anonymous   March 3rd, 2008 4:26 pm ET

Remember all you Clinton supporters. Clinton supported Bush on Iraq saying she didn't know he would use force. She voted again with
Bush on Iran. We have 3 Supreme Court Judges due to reach 80 years and older. With all of the baggage the Clintons have over the 8 years in office do ya think those things won't be revisited. What are you so-called Democrats doing to our party? I supported the Clintons in the 90's, but I can't support them now. Step away for a minute people, we have to unite behind the person who can win. Hilary rhetoric is be-coming to personal and is in danger of alienating alot of voters. Using the Drudge Report to get out false rumors about his religion and race. Listen, having Hilary is okay, but its time to move on and go with someone who can move this nation. Wake up people, join us today.
OBAMA 08!

Ben - Columbus, Ohio   March 3rd, 2008 4:25 pm ET

So it looks like the Obama camp says the memo is wrong and the Canadians say that that this random campaign adviser, speaking unofficially, did not provide them a different line on NAFTA. Sounds to me like this story should be dead, but the Hillary camp certainly won't let it go away. Tomorrow night really can't come soon enough so that we can finally move beyond this destructive, petty distortion and get down to the business of beating the Republicans.

Tom   March 3rd, 2008 4:25 pm ET

Folks, it is Hillary who has changed positions on NAFTA. She is throwing this negative campaigning out there as a last ditch effort to distract voters from that fact. She is the flip flopper on this issue and is using a lowdown dirty George W. Bush-Carl Rove trick to do it. Same old negative politics from Bill and Hillary Clinton. You really want this same kind of devisive politics in the White House. Think, really. Hillary is too divisive and CANNOT WIN AGAINST McCAIN in November. Wake up!!!

ssnicky   March 3rd, 2008 4:25 pm ET

This same accusation has been hurled at the Clinton campaign. So who cares? Where is the the prove either way?

Deana   March 3rd, 2008 4:25 pm ET

Did you Hillary supporters actually read this article? The Canandian government even said, "In the recent report produced by the Consulate General in Chicago, there was no intention to convey, in any way, that Senator Obama and his campaign team were taking a different position in public from views expressed in private, including about NAFTA. We deeply regret any inference that may have been drawn to that effect."

THIS STORY HAS BEEN DEBUNKED BY THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT!! This is just more Clinton spin.

You folks are so gullible!! I am so sick and tired of these uneducated Clinton supporters believing in such bile! You guys really need to educate yourself on these two candidates, where they stand on the REAL issues, WHAT they've stood for in the PAST, and WHERE they want to take us in the future. If she gets the nomination, you morons can thank yourselves for rolling out the Red Carpet for John McCain's entrance into the white house.

Peter Canada Obama 08   March 3rd, 2008 4:24 pm ET

Obama didn`t say those words and both Canadian and Obama camp denied this. So, get over it.
Hillary should worried about how she will dropped out of the race.

Tiffany   March 3rd, 2008 4:24 pm ET

Mr. Blitzer needs to watch MSNBC, they have video footage of Parliamentary meeting in Canada where both sides deny Senator Clinton's allegations. As or Tony Rezko, there is NOTHING there, Senator Obama had nothing to do with Mr. Rezkos illegal activities. Find some real news, this is getting really tiresome.

Steve   March 3rd, 2008 4:23 pm ET

Those people who call themselves Democrats who would rather vote for McCain than Obama, why don't you just come out of the shadows and say your would rather vote for a white Republican than a black Democrat??

Say it you bigots!!!!! Say it!!!!!!!!

Chris   March 3rd, 2008 4:23 pm ET

Hard to believe there is much into this story. I'm not surprised the desperate supporters and Clinton campaign advisors have jumped all over this. It definitely isn't what the Obama camp needed. However, when you have SNL coming to try to rescue your campaign, I mean does it get any more pathetic?? I guess it's fitting though, it's an outdated show of the past looking out for an outdated candidate of the past.

vegage   March 3rd, 2008 4:23 pm ET

You see, Obama saying one thing before American people and then one of his campaign people is saying a complete different story. This guy has just hipnotized, made a spell to the American people and he is being dishonest. I hope it is not too late to have this thing changed around and have the true best candidate winning the nomination, that is Hillary.

B. Smart   March 3rd, 2008 4:23 pm ET

People,. . . . no matter how much we think we are influencing others with our opinions, the only thing that matters now are the exit polls tomorrow night.

YES WE CAN
Obama 08.

Steve   March 3rd, 2008 4:23 pm ET

I'm an Obama supporter (just gave him money today, in fact), but it seems to me that both sides are a bit hysterical over this non-story.

Remember, folks: if you don't support the Democratic nominee, no matter who he or she is, that means the following: 1) the repeal of Roe vs. Wade, 2) the continuation of the ruinous Iraq war, and 3) the continuation of the budget-busting Bush tax cuts. And that's just the beginning.

The Democrats are far from perfect, but we need to stop the bleeding. So, please, folks, dial down the hyperbole and remember who the real adversary is.

Dave from NH   March 3rd, 2008 4:23 pm ET

People are you seeing what is playing in the Canadian Government ...

All of you who keep calling Senator Obama a liar need to tune in and see that the fight is not about IF it is false (this report about Obama that the CLINTON campaign is pushing) but who needs to be fired in the Canadian government ...They are screaming at the Prime Minister...in their parliament and saying that somethings a foot...somethings rotten in Denmark...

beenburrito   March 3rd, 2008 4:23 pm ET

FLIP FLOP... let me see, perhaps he is getting more than an endorsement from John Kerry?

This guy is sooooo bad news that I will definitely vote for McCain if Hillary is not the democratic candidate.

When the press is bias in favor of obama, nobody cried racism, but if the press is finally fair, then they obaaaaaaama followers cry racism!!!!???? What is your leader inspiring you to??? to be delisuional?

Mike   March 3rd, 2008 4:23 pm ET

Whatever Canadians say, we will vote for Rezco's "friend." Yes, we can!

North Of Sixty   March 3rd, 2008 4:23 pm ET

Well if David is thrilled about Obama's concern for Canada, I am not!

And I think instead of BLAMING Hillary yet again for Obama's lack of genius and intellect people should see it for what it is – no forethought, hindsight, or intellect goes into his statements. And he has no plans except for the ones that Hillary designed and he gives voice to as being his own!

And with the US now owing Canada hundreds of thousands of dollars re: Trade issues, maybe Obama should change his strategy on closing the US monetary Friendship Alliance with China as the US just might need it. And they also should start looking elsewhere for their extra planes, soldiers, police to train Afghans' soldiers, Military for Afghanistan, and Canadian's monetary support for the Iraq War.

Obama does not show Leadership – Far from it ! He is a Dreamer void of substance and it shows !

CS   March 3rd, 2008 4:22 pm ET

Ten to one that this is a bald faced lie "leaked" by the current Conservative Gov't of Canada. Prime Minister Harper of Canada has already come out backing McCain. As a Canadian, I would not put our current government above pandering to their GOP brethren down south. Believe it. Don't worry USA we Canucks will be voting these pricks out of office shortly, keep the faith and do the same! Good luck!

Carolyn, LA, CA   March 3rd, 2008 4:22 pm ET

Please!!!!!! The Clintons, (obviously behind spreading the rumors about Obama), should be the last ones talking about dealing with alleged crooks (Rezco)!!! Remember White Water, Vince Foster, questionable stock exchange dealings and investments, Bill's private donations for his "foundation???? How much of that money do you think went into their pockets? Maybe that's the reason HRC won't release those tax returns and papers!! STOP THE SWIFTBOATING, CNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Peter S, Georgia   March 3rd, 2008 4:21 pm ET

Ben,

Let me explain it to you – all sarcasm aside. I won't vote for McCain out of spite. If Senator Clinton is knocked out of this race, I will vote for McCain because he is the best remaining choice.

If I thought Senator Obama was "fantastic" to use your word or if I thought he and Hillary had "almost identical ideals," I would vote for him. I don't and I won't.

If Hillary is knocked out of this race, it will be partly due to a poorly run campaign. It will also be due to blatant bias on the part of the press, a double standard on the part of much of the leadership of the Democratic Party (ironic since Hillary is supposed to be the establishment candidate), more than a bit of sexism, and Clinton bashing that just will not seem to end after more than a decade.

Senator Obama has bashed the "past 15 years" from the beginning of his campaign. If he wasn't bashing the Clintons, who was he talking about? Any doubts were erased by his questionable performance on the question of NAFTA.

The "I'll vote for McCain" comments are not going away for the simple reason that some of us feel that Senator Clinton has been unfairly treated, that her supporters have been trashed as well as racists, etc., and that some of us feel that McCain is the next best candidate.

Jenny MA   March 3rd, 2008 4:21 pm ET

Wondering if two losers: Kerry and Kennedy will speak up this time for OBAMA again?

You guys are definitely destroying this party now by attacking Hillary!

You guys try to use OBAMA to control the party!!! But you have to accept the truth: It is your termination now!

I wonder what will happen when she looses. will she switch to be a republican?

Just a thought from Canada.

Laura   March 3rd, 2008 4:21 pm ET

Finally it's coming out...Obama is a liar! No billion-dollar media blitz by Oprah can cover this stink. Look at Obama's close ties and financial dealings with Tony Rezko (crook realtor who is indicted!) in Chicago, along with Farrakhan! Obama received one very sweet real estate deal in Chicago from Rezko for..... WHAT? What's the catch? I guess we'll find out once he's President, won't we? WAKE UP AMERICA! Obama is NOT what you think he is – he should not be trusted to run our great country and open us up to further attacks – economic and physical. Vote for Hillary!

3) Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad wants us out of Iraq

AND WE HAVE BARACK OBAMA WITHOUT ANY EXPERIENCE AS COMMANDER IN CHIEF IN THE WHITE HOUSE!!!

Mel   March 3rd, 2008 4:19 pm ET

It is unbelievably stupid and irrational to say something like "if not Clinton, McCain!" That just means you aren't voting based on the issues, but rather things that have nothing to do with policy. Its people like this that make me question the merits of democracy and letting idiots vote.

JP SW   March 3rd, 2008 4:19 pm ET

Indeed, if it isn't Hilary, it has to be McCain. We can not put Obama in the white House!
Hilary for President of the United States!

MSNBC is reporting the truth, and showing the new video from todays Canadian Parliament, were they admit that this is not true. I do not know why CNN is not showing the tape of Canadian Parliament denouncing this charge. I'm very shocked that CNN is doing this, I'm totally shocked.

CNN is being one sided on this.

Mainely Carol   March 3rd, 2008 4:19 pm ET

I'm always amazed that people will listen to garbage in the waning days just before voting. This kind of trash is exactly what Hillary does very well. I thougth Americans were tired of trash talk and rumor mongers who spread lies and fears to accieve their own gains.
I see where one person isn't voting over this. Too bad they don't really see through this tactic.

Hillary will keep up the fear and distortions and sadly, many will fall for it. If she wins, beware this is all we have to 'look forward' to for the next 9 months with no repair for the nation with those in Washington we need to work with to move forward. Yes that includes republicans.
Hillary winning means another Republican in office.
BTW, notice how the press is bending over backwards due to the 'charges' they are not fair... boo hoo to poor Hillary.

Brian   March 3rd, 2008 4:19 pm ET

only the truth   March 3rd, 2008 4:17 pm ET

To all our fellow Americans in Ohio –

please do not be misled by sen. clinton's remarks about sen. obama's NAFTA position. just remember that it was Pres. Clinton who put his stamp on NAFTA. it was this signature that doomed so many jobs in your state and in the whole country. was sen. clinton truly opposed to NAFTA going back when she was the first lady? who's vouching for her that it was so? david gergen? mr. gergen was a member of the clinton inner circle at that time and still is active in the clinton camp.

mrs. clinton will say and do everything to win this nomination, to the extent of dividing the whole party, just as she is pitting her followers against that of obama's. it'll be a shame and a tragedy if she gets her way through the convention. it will spell a fragmented and doomed party that will not have the strength and the will to overcome a republican surge back to the White House.

I am a Republican and i want to see a real change in our thinking, in our feelings toward our government and a real change in our policies so that we may regain our prestige and honor and our belief in our country and be the best on earth once again.

s   March 3rd, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Well the story about NAFTA and the Canadian Consul it is not true it has been debunked by the Canadians
Also the Rezko trail is nothing, The Clinton's have more scandals than any politician I can remember in my life.
Hillary is not so innocent so don't let her fool all of you and if you think she will get anything done think again, it will be constant bickering so go right ahead and vote for Hillary!
As a life long democrat I am amazed at all of the people that want to go back to the same old nothing getting done!
Shame on you HILLARY!
Keep dividing the party and good luck on winning in November if Hillary is the nominee!

Edi   March 3rd, 2008 4:17 pm ET

I am a Canadian and live in Canada. Make no mistake. Everyone here in Canada knows that Obama's memo was REAL and that Obama, in his naivity, expected the Candian government to "keep it quiet". Having worked in Ottawa, I know the subtext when a government states "we don't want to get into American politics". A sr. aide of Obama sent the memo; the Canadian official did not misinterpret the memo; and Obama's own naivity and POOR JUDGEMENT is strikingly evident. Be wary Canada. Obama blames Canadians for his own errors. Will Americans also be blamed the next time he makes a mistake? Oh, and by the way Obama, we don't have a President. We have a Prime Minister. If you are the nominee, we should withdraw from Afghanistan!!!!

Martin   March 3rd, 2008 4:17 pm ET

If this kind of mud slinging sticks (and having experienced Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, it may well stick), then good luck with the next war ...

Good luck as well paying for your next vacation overseas as the Dollar will take another nose dive with either Clinton or McCain as president.

Just paleeze, don't say that you did not see it coming.

And btw, Thank you Hillary and Thank you Bill for running such a shameless campaign.

Even the Canadian government stated that there was nothing to this "story" ...

Susan   March 3rd, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Thank you for taking of your blinders. You need to dig deeper on BHO. This is serious.

Awilda   March 3rd, 2008 4:16 pm ET

With his lightweight experience, charisma masquerading as skill and backtracking and doublespeak when he gets caught playing the same old politics game, perhaps I should be thinking of writing in Hillary on the November ballot if she does not get the nomination.

AP, NY   March 3rd, 2008 4:16 pm ET

I can't wait for the primaries to be over!!!! Its getting worse by the minute and in the end the Democratics will LOSE. Both Hillary and Obama supporters are being so short sighted. After Hillary wins the nomination...what then??? Do you folks think that Hillary will go on to win the elections without Obama supporters??? Too much mud slinging...too much!!!. What will be the damage to the party at the end of the day.

Douly   March 3rd, 2008 4:16 pm ET

Our democratic party is Ruined Republicans will take the white house...because of all this negative bickering . thank you Hillary .....

OBAMA RULES 08

Derrick   March 3rd, 2008 4:15 pm ET

Barack Obama's definition of "change" and "hope" are clear and they are simple!!!

Change means to say one thing to the people and then change his mind later behind the scenes!!!

He hopes that the voters don't find out about it!!!

I USED to be an Obama supporter, but NOT ANYMORE!!!

Wake up and realize people, he is a liar, very deceitful, and those are HIS definitions of change and hope.

GO HILLARY 08' 12'

I hate that CNN lets people comment on these articles. I feel like I get dumber just reading them.

Ricardo   March 3rd, 2008 4:15 pm ET

Canadian Parliament today dismissed the claims about Obama and NAFTA. Why is CNN not reporting this?? This is on tape, Canada said this did not happen.

Sydney   March 3rd, 2008 4:15 pm ET

I think that Obama has shown that whatever charge is against him, it is just another rumor. I think that the HRC Campaign is just looking for another story to try to stick to Obama. Stop the bickering and quit trying to downrade Obama just because he is holding is own again the "unstopable clinton machine."

Another thing, the reason Obama responds so quickly over others when there is a charge against him, is that he doesn't want these rumors to sit with people. He is not stupid, he is smart.

Obama '08

Lou   March 3rd, 2008 4:15 pm ET

Obama is making deals and lying to the voters. He is not even the party nominee.... empty words of "HOPE" and people are falling for it. America deserves better.

Carol Cure   March 3rd, 2008 4:14 pm ET

I am so thanksful that Obama is above the negative politics Hillary and her supporters love and is trying to change the political discourse. Just think what he could do to her in response to the flaky Rezco attacks if he mentioned Norman Hsu's hundreds of thousands of dollars in illegal campaign contributions to Hillary and her supporters. At least Obama allows dissenters on his website (unlike Hillary who apparently edits out any unfavorable comments and allows only fawning lovefests – she must not believe in freedom of speech).

California Independent   March 3rd, 2008 4:14 pm ET

It's Clinton's fault for pointing out yet again that Obama is a liar?
Obama's whole campaign is about political positioning rather than policy. The guy has absolutely no integrity.

It's why so many of us will vote for McCain rather than Obama.

If it isn't Clinton, McCain '08

Sheila   March 3rd, 2008 4:14 pm ET

It seems to me the candidates should ALL be able to pronounce the names of the states correctly, if they want to be president of the country. Case in point, Obama cannot pronounce the New England state that begins with the letter M (and it's not Maine). He mispronounced it twice in the Ohio debate!!! SHAME ON YOU.

Deidre   March 3rd, 2008 4:14 pm ET

WOW!!! CNN finally rears its racist head. How convenient that on the eve of Obama's posible wrap up of the democratic election, this station's big white power brokers come up with these stories to derail his campaign. Tell me America isn't still racist.

My how CNN's tune has changed when it seems a black guy may just win the nomination. Shame on you CNN. TOO Convenient to be believed.

HRC's tactics have hit an all time low! Her desperation is showing and I know this is just another reason to NOT vote for such a divisive person!
Watch out America....after she loses tomorrow, she will keep slandering and will cause the greatest division the democratic party has ever seen and America will truly see it was always about Hillary and her ego!

Nah. Downplay all you want. He's busted. And I'm sure there'll be more in the next couple of months to unmask this guy. She should stay in no matter what happens in Texas or Ohio. She's been vetted. Obama, for th emost part, has had a long free ride for the past few months. The press is finally getting around to him. And so it begins.

Michael   March 3rd, 2008 4:13 pm ET

They met. Why did they meet? For what purpose? Is it coincidence that they met with Obama's domestic policy adviser? Give me a break. How many times are we going to have to let them slide before theor campaign is held accountable? Is this what America has to look forward to in an Obama administration?

Getting very tired of the excuses. Bottom line is this: In an election where a primary is taking place in a state which has been adversely affected by this trade agreeement, Obama should not have let his surrogate meet with Canada in any way, shape, or form until he was officially named President of the United States. This arrogance is showing voters from Ohio and Texas exactly what this guy is made of – nothing. Nobama to the snake oil salesman.

Hillary or McCain for President.

HH Texas   March 3rd, 2008 4:13 pm ET

Go Obama'08

Bill   March 3rd, 2008 4:13 pm ET

Its obvious that Obama and the Obama campaign has told a little lie. However, this is a serious issue and should not be overlooked so easily. It does not matter if Bill Clinton signed NAFTA in, or Hillary ever supported or not. The point is that the Obama team has been caught in a lie to the American people. He used this issue to attack Hillary, all the while telling the Canadians not to worry about his political positioning. This is not change or hope that we need. This is a politician using old style tactics. The point is, they lied. When confronted about this last week, they claimed it never happend. It has to make you wonder what else the Obama camp has done.

Obama does not deserve the vote's in the four states tommorow and should apologize to the american people and drop out of the race.

So much for a new type of politics.

Tom   March 3rd, 2008 4:13 pm ET

Being a Canadian and watching the CANADIAN NEWS, the report started with the CLINTON CAMP telling Canadian officials not to worry about NAFTA and 2nd that the Obama camp did the same thing. This seems to be very biased journalism when both camps were originally cited in doing the same thing. Big deal if they did–do you idiots think you're losing your jobs and factories to Canada–we've lost just as much as America–look down south and to asia for your answers. Idiots

linda hemmingsen   March 3rd, 2008 4:13 pm ET

Try again!
You know what is one of the best things about being a Hillary supporter. We are not looking for her to inspire us, we expect to inspire her to do what we want and need as a nation.

By the way, Hillary supporters, let's remove any doubt about her going on. Set tomorrow to be a record donation day for her to encourage her to go on. The rest of us around the country may only be able to watch at this point, but we can make a difference with our$$$. I plan to have a beer tomorrow night to celebrate her victories and will log in and send off a small donation!!

A Hillary supporter inspiring Hillary's campaign!!

Joe F.   March 3rd, 2008 4:12 pm ET

This is very sad; this is not the change people are looking for. A change for the worse. It did not take long for Obama to learn the bad ways. Very very sad, it strikes at the credibility of Mr. Obama. What else is he telling, but he does not really mean!

This is what occurs when people do not have a good grasp of the issues. So, poor credibility and poor grasp of the facts. Imagine him trying to run the whole of the US when he can not get it right just running a few people in his campaign, at best, and at worst he is just not telling the true facts around who send the people to the meeting..

balthus   March 3rd, 2008 4:12 pm ET

I'd just like to say "thanks" to all my fellow Democrats here who are attacking Obama with such zeal.

Your inaccurate, mean-spirited ventings are making it more likely that John McCain will be our next president, that we Democrats do not reach the 60 vote Senate plurarity we desperately need, and that the next 3 Supreme Court appointees are ultra-conservatives.

Way to go! And here's your reward: if your wish comes true and Hillary is our nominee, next November you'll get to look yourselves in the mirror for four long years – just like the Nader supporters who tipped the tide for Gore over Bush – and wonder, "what the heck was I thinking?"

Shannon Shiflett   March 3rd, 2008 4:12 pm ET

this is a rumor/lie from the clinton campaign.

dick durbin already debunked this on msnbc. cnn, please stop reporting half-stories.

hillary is desperate and will do anything to win–very republican. let's not forget it was HER VERY OWN HUSBAND who signed NAFTA into law. people, wake up.

Maurice, Iowa   March 3rd, 2008 4:12 pm ET

What kinda sense does this make. Canada profits tremendously from NAFTA. Don't you think it would benefit them to say that Obama made the statements and in doing so, cast a bad light on him so he may possibly lose the nomination? They are flat out denying that he ever made the statement. So why is the Clinton campaign twisting the truth on this one? Because she is desperate and will say anything to get elected...

P Graber   March 3rd, 2008 4:12 pm ET

Just say NO to O. So we will have no regrets.

Go Hillary

Shannon McMurphy   March 3rd, 2008 4:12 pm ET

Obama must have seen the movie "South Park"...yes indeed, the theme song was "Blame Canada". Did his campaign call Canadian officials? Guess we'll have to wait for the sequel.

By the way, I had my nephew count the number of times the words "Barack", "Obama", or "Barack Obama" were used in the first hour of the "Situation Room" the other day...it was 117.

And NOW you've uncovered news about Rezko months after everyone else did?

You really are the "Best Political Team" in television.

Good lord.

I agree with my Follow Canadian (A Canadian Perspective). The Governor of Michigan said herself that it is cheaper to manufacture Cars in Ontario, because of the health care system in Canada. Furthermore, Nafta has caused jobs in Canada as well. I lost my job (as a customer service rep) to a young man in Pittsburgh.

jwilliams   March 3rd, 2008 4:11 pm ET

well well the truth is coming out and Someone wonts to blame Hillary for it get real folks This is just one of the things Obama wonts us to believe we don't need him in the white house no telling what he will tell and then say he was misunderstood . You can't tell other country's that you are misunderstanding me i didn't say that
this is a joke
Don't Let him answerer the red Phone he will say the he misunderstand what was being said he thought they said Rezko Or Giannoulias was on the Phone and it really was the world being bombed sorry for the misunderstanding

HILLARY CLINTON

Carla F. Mollica, Albuquerque, NM   March 3rd, 2008 4:11 pm ET

Lies, deception, they always surface. Obama has been using unscrupulous tactics from day 1 of this campaign. He espouses "change" but offers no "how to" plan. Come on, people, America wants and needs change, but who is best qualified to bring it about? Hillary is that person. As a Democratic president of her intelligence, knowledge and clout, and with a Democratic led congress, this country will move out of the gloom predicament the Republicans have put us in.

A VOTE FOR HILLARY IS A VOTE TO RESTORE RESPECT AND GREATNESS FOR AMERICA AND FAITH FROM IT'S PEOPLE!

John T.   March 3rd, 2008 4:10 pm ET

Even the Canadian government has stepped in now and stated that this was not an official meeting and that there is nothing that implies Senator Obama's campaign rhetoric is at odds with anything they know about how he intends to deal with NAFTA.
Has Senator Obama made use of the fact that Senator Clinton promised 200,000 jobs to upstate NY, which has had a job loss of over 30,000? Or that her answer to this was that she was banking on Al Gore being president when she made that promise? Funny, that qualifier was never mentioned during her Senate campaigning (I know, I'm from NY).
There are three candidates for President at the moment – two are gracious. Figure it out.

HSNP   March 3rd, 2008 4:10 pm ET

Sorry to say this but I blame you CNN for causing all this trouble. I hope you post the truth about this story or you are just as bad as Hillary! This was an informal discussion that occured and the quote in that memo was never uttered by the Obama rep. MSNBC has more accurately covered this story. In Canada some reps are calling for whomever involved in this memo to be held accountable for trying to interfere with US politics.

I hope you, CNN and Hillary, check the facts and accurately portray them. Obama would.

Obama '08

Jake   March 3rd, 2008 4:09 pm ET

Of course Obama isn't going to be held responsible for this. Once again it simply gets "explained away." No questions asked. What other promises do you suppose he has made while speaking out the other side of his mouth? While he is promising healthcare do you suppose he is sending messengers out to meet with the pharmaceutical and insurance companies telling them not to worry, this is just a political tactic. What about more affordable college for our young? Suppose he has representatives calming the banking institution telling them not to worry, they'll still be able to screw over our young americans that this is just a political tactic. WHEN WILL THIS GUY BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING?

John Adkisson, Sacramento, California   March 3rd, 2008 4:09 pm ET

I can envision a meeting involving Wolfson and Penn (Clinton's top advisors) cackling over how they can take an unsubstantiated report, about an unauthorized communication, which has been denied by its participants, and turn it into an actual issue in the minds of voters on the day before the election.

This whole episode reveals two things: (1) Clinton's team has no respect for the truth or the voters; and (2) Obama's message of change is particularly relevant with respect to changing the Rove-like attack machine tactics that have divided this nation for so long.

Clinton has proved time and again in this campaign that fair play is for sissies and she will say and do anything to win. Unfortunately, this sort of thing often works and it may effect the Ohio vote. But to people who are tired of this sort of tactic, the Ohion results will mean that much less if it does work.

Texas Voter   March 3rd, 2008 4:09 pm ET

Wayne   March 3rd, 2008 4:09 pm ET

Wow. It looks like the Clinton smear machine is working. Due to lowere education level Clinton supporters dont read to the bottom of the article. I sure hope voters are dumb enough to fall for these last minute tactics. Bush, Clinton, Bush, Clinton..do we have a two FAMILY system of government?
This from the Canadians ", there was no intention to convey, in any way, that Senator Obama and his campaign team were taking a different position in public from views expressed in private, including about NAFTA. We deeply regret any inference that may have been drawn to that effect"

Paul   March 3rd, 2008 4:09 pm ET

The fact here is that Hillary will be our next President because America can finally see that Obama is one more politician a talker who promises "change." That s right, he can be change, 'cause as we can see , obama changes positions on different issues depending on what makes him look good in public. We are the Democratic party, and this is not about speeches, we should be responsible for the future of our nation. Or should we tolerate a person (Obama) who says something but does a different thing? Is that the change we hope for ?, give me a break!

The Canadians deny the Clintons allegations against Obama in the 5th and 6th paragraph of the above article. The Clintons are calling the Canadians liars. Not a good display of foriegn policy by the Clinton campaign. How will the Clintons repair this damage if she becomes president. She will have to say "oh, that was just campaign rhetoric, I just called you Canadians liars to fool people into voting for me." This would be the same sin that she is falsly condemning Obama of. What hypocracy on the Clintons part that would be. Please Hillary, for the good of the party, the nation and the world, stop the smear tactics.

It's time to focus on the general election...but even she loses tomorrow apparently she's not willing to step aside for the good of the party. I am not surprised at all, all is about her, I don't know why she's ready to do anything to get back to the white House even running a nasty campaign ...

Bryan Myrick   March 3rd, 2008 4:05 pm ET

Isn't it amazing how the story becomes everything else but what might be important to voters? The issue of at least the implication that Obama is talking out of both sides of his mouth (the NAFTA issue being one example among many) should be the centerpiece. Instead, this becomes a process story. Hey CNN: Any thought given to getting Senator Obama on the record again as to what his stated position REALLY is?

Ian   March 3rd, 2008 4:04 pm ET

First it was Hillary the tough, then Hillary the sensitive, then Hillary the victim, then Hillary the scrappy underdog, now you see, Hillary the hopeful positive candidate for bringing everyone together (literally stealing that mantle from Obama). You all saw the true Clinton mustard when Bill spilled his hubris, his power hungry guts all over the airwaves. People, I want a woman pres, but not THIS woman. Talk about fake... Talk about lying... What happened to all those liberated women who hated Hillary for "standing by her man" as he humiliated her with sex in the whit house? We all knew why she stood by her man. AMBITION. These final hour tactics prove it.

dana   March 3rd, 2008 4:03 pm ET

Oh, please who's the rookie? Clinton miss I have experience has made more than one big mistake during this campaign, poor management and leadership, financial mismanagement, conflicting messages, unable to control surrogates, unwilling to release tax returns and other important documents… Why don’t you Hillary supporters look at that fact instead of whining about the media and other things

D R   March 3rd, 2008 4:03 pm ET

The Clinton's pushed this bill into congress. How can she talk about NAFTA.... If the people in Ohio and Texas fall for this they deserve Hillary. And they will not get their jobs back! What's up CNN??? I know a bunch of anti Hillary folks that are not getting their comments onto these pages!

TO   March 3rd, 2008 4:02 pm ET

This is exactly the reason why Hillary should stay in the race.
Think about how will Obama handle this from Republicans? and this is just the start.

A Canadian Perspective   March 3rd, 2008 4:02 pm ET

This notion of Obama appeasing Canada is just plain silly. But then so is the argument that NAFTA cost American jobs. The real job losses went to India and China. Some factories stay open In Canada because the country has a single payer health care system which allows some companies like GM to stay competetive in this market. So health care is the main issue here not the trade agreement.

JJ   March 3rd, 2008 4:01 pm ET

Man the title of this story is very misleading. Downplay???

Well well, what a surprise. There she goes again. Hillary is just a flat out failure and a dirty minded politician who will say or do anything just to make herself look good, with no regard to using the facts.

Nice Try Hillary, but that strategy has failed you already, and beating a dead horse is not going to bring a different result.

Chris, Middletown, CT   March 3rd, 2008 4:01 pm ET

Who signed NAFTA in again?? Oh right....Clinton....who didn't have the forsight to negotiate a document right the first time....oh right....Clinton.....who doesn't have a shot ...oh right....Clinton (unless people are dumb enough to listen to this argument)

Susan K. TX   March 3rd, 2008 4:01 pm ET

I feel betrayed by Obama. I was a supporter of his and now I feel I cannot trust what he says. I don't think I will vote for anybody tuesday. A lot of my family feel the same way.

It is GOP Strategy.

First let Clinton out, then against such Obama, will MCCain win.

if Obama--McCain, then Go McCain 08

Ben   March 3rd, 2008 4:01 pm ET

I don't understand Clinton supporters who say they'll vote McCain if Obama is the Democratic Nominee..

You are going to vote McCain simply out of spite? Both candidates are fantastic, choose who you think has the best chance of beating McCain.. because Obama and Clinton share almost identical ideals.

Put the "I'll vote for McCain" comments to rest please.

dale   March 3rd, 2008 4:01 pm ET

Hi! I find it amusing that Obama backers throw the Iraq vote on Hillary without really understanding the context in which it was framed and brought to vote on the senate floor. First off – she gave him authority to go to war as a LAST resort – after the inspection regime had done its job. Bush and Cheney did not follow the script – so its her bad judgement that she trusted her President?!!

Obama did not even vote on the resolution, so how can he say he was against it from the beginning? giving a speech, like he does so brilliantly, does not truly reflect one's intentions, for if they did, why in the world is Obama railing on NAFTA, while having his senior economic adviser tell the Canadian government that this is just CAMPAIGN RHETORIC??

and where was he when they had to vote on the IRAN resolution? where was he for the past year when Afghanistan was tumbling into chaos and the Taliban marched onto Kabul? he's responsible for the committee overseeing Afghan affairs and NATO. he says he couldnt hold a committee meeting because he was campaigning to be president!!. tell me – as president he's going to tell us – 'er, sorry, i couldn't handle the so and so crisis, because i was campaigning for re-election in 2012." !!!! this is getting ridiculous.

if he cant do his job that he was elected for, how in the world is he going to handle the toughest job that exists? WAKE UP AMERICA. Obama is a wonderful speaker – lets send him around the world to inspire with speeches.

Lets put Hillary in the house to actually get the work done! otherwise, its McCain and the loony right wing fringe of the GOP. I'm moving out of the country if that happens.

SC in FL   March 3rd, 2008 4:01 pm ET

Why is it when Obama gets caught with something that goes against what he states – all you Obama-freaks act like Bush-ies. Whatever George Bush says MUST be right – so whatever Obama says MUST be right as well. Give me a break.

Why is it that the Super Power Of the World – has such aweful choices for President? For me it is picking the least worse of the three choices; McCain, Obama and Hillary. I'll take Hillary.

David March 3rd, 2008 3:24 pm ET

As a Canadian I'm absolutely thrilled that Barack Obama is more concerned about the welfare of NAFTA on behalf of Canadians rather than keeping his word/rhetoric to the American electorate. Mr. Obama will be just the kind of President that Canada would like. A champion on behalf of Canada and agreeable to Canadian issues. Although if I were an American I might find myself staring at him to read his face….particularly his mouth as I wouldn't be sure which side of it he was speaking from and what to believe comes out of it. Maybe the "amazing" Mr. Obama can learn to sing both national anthems out of his mouth at the same time.

Anonymous   March 3rd, 2008 3:59 pm ET

what people fail to realize is that nafta has been a huge benefit to both canada and the united states. if you want to go back to economic protectionism, you might want to study the economies of the united states and canada in the 1970s.

Amy in Iowa   March 3rd, 2008 3:59 pm ET

The Clintons created NAFTA! Who are they trying to kid.. or rather distract from the facts of this major Clinton blunder.

JJ in NY   March 3rd, 2008 3:59 pm ET

Why are all the stupid people rushing like lemmings to the sea to jump on this bandwagon? Hillary is desperate and will only get dirtier and more nasty . This is so overblown to lend credence to a third party informal and casual conversation . If hillary doesn't have anything positive to say about herself, she should just shut up and withdraw from the race .

Carl   March 3rd, 2008 3:59 pm ET

Once again Hillary rushes to push a story without checking the accuracy of it – or does that not matter? It's causing quite the stir in Canada actually and some are calling for whomever responcible to be fired (or so I hear). I would hope Hillary would appologize for her following this story and accusing Barack of double talk but I know better than to have these false hopes of her being "Presidential".

To all you out there, take a closer look at both candidates and I know you will make the right choice.

Obama '08

What else is he hiding? Why has he been claiming that he is different from other politicians? I do not find anything new about him other than the fact that he is one of those same politician with lie after lie!
Just admit it he is one of them! If he denies the plain fact, he can not be a good politician. Again, he better admit that he is not an angel!!!!!
If you are, you better stay with family at your home

Had this came out about Hillary Obama and his people would have been all over it. So, Obama supporters dont act like you would NOT jump at the chance to just blast Hillary if a story came out about her contradicting herself.

d   March 3rd, 2008 3:58 pm ET

I was an obama supporter until i really started to listen to the victimology of what the Obamas teach. Why does Michelle make speeches and act like she was born in the turn of the century? She and her husband talk a lot of being a victims! If the obamas are in their forties, then that means they grew up in 1970s and 80s! …. They got all kinds of help growing up. I just got real turned off by the whole look at me I'm a victim speech its all emotional.
So i woke up…. I don't want to be helping a movement of victim's like our country owes the Obamas something !
Like our country needs to be run by victims crying about it all the time,…. eek I hope not!
That all Americans should now pay for the sins of the south.
I thought that is why Lincoln had us fight the Civil War! Hundreds of thousand died. Didn’t they?
I think pamyment has been payed in full.

What have you got? One of Obama's economic advisers may have said something to someone in Canada that the Canadian construed as pro-NAFTA?

And this thin reed is supposed to sway the electorate?

Ho hum. Another molehill being built into a mountain by a desperate politician. It's the day before the primaries: TIme to toss as much filth as possible and hope some of it sticks.

Another reason not to vote for Clinton.

David - It's now Day 409!   March 3rd, 2008 3:56 pm ET

You people (readers comments) really need to get a grip. There is VERY little difference between Hillary and Barack. The real differance is but one. Hillary Clinton is not a leader and Barack Obama is.

Hillary say's she ready on day one. Well it's day 409 since her announcement and so far we've had from her an arrogant and impotent campaign, a fiscally mismanaged campaign, a campaign that has gone through so many changes in tact, in managemment, in ideology, and in style we can't figure out whether she's Scarlett Ohara or Cruellla DeVille. One thing we do know, she give's Cybill a run for her money. Her long-time friends and supporters are turning thier back on her (anyone who says John Lewis changed camps becuase of political polls is just plain ignorant!).

When she announced on Jan 20, 2007 Hillary was the darling of the press and appeared a sure thing. Since then she's lost the press, she's lost her base of support, she's loosing her super-delegates, and saddly, it appears she is loosing long time supporters and friends.

Ready on day 1???? Excuse me? What planet are you from and what drug are you on? Can you imagine if something goes wrong in the first days of office? Hillary had her plan, and something knocked it off track (it's called life, we've all experienced it). Since then she's been a bumbling politician. Hell, she can't lead her own campaign let alone the Nation.

Jay   March 3rd, 2008 3:56 pm ET

It's for people to wake up to the Obmination that could happen if Barak wins the presidency. This guy is as deluded as Junior. We don't need any more be presidents who aren't qualified for the job. I'd vote for McCain before I'd for for Barak. And I'm a lifelong liberal Dem.

WE DONT WANT HILLARY IN THE WHITE HOUSE!

Barack Obama is not using again his good judgement. This is another that is going to be used against him in this contest. You see, he does not have enough experience. he is just talking and there is no action. He is good in speeches and he is time ofr the people to recognize that we need someone who has enough experience to handle this country and to unify it. I don't think that he has executive experience while Hillary has legislature and executive. He is hyppocrite against this country. whatever he said today in this campaign, he will be against it tomorrow. He is just talking to win this election, I believe.

People like what he has to say. But will they like what he will actually do?

Hope .. That he doesn't run America further into the ground.

Sure he's charasmatic, but he's still immature and arrogant. He's not ready.

Why don't we discuss the way Clinton supported NAFTA and now denies it!

OBAMA 08!!!

MSNBC just told the rest of the story which PROVES this is nothing but smear from the Clinton campaign. The Canadians were on there saying it was false themselves. Get with it and report the truth. OHIO for Obama!!

adam   March 3rd, 2008 3:54 pm ET

Obama and Clinton and McCain supporters: You just don't get it do you? They're ALL liars! They ALL love NAFTA- Heck, BILL CLINTON was the one to SIGN the agreement! Do you think Hillary's got a different view than Bill? Get real! As for McCain- Mr. Amnesty himself- is singing a different tune now just to get elected in relation to border ENFORCEMENT. And the fact Obama has only sponsored ONE bill, yes, that's right, ONE BILL during his entire tenure as a senator shows a complete lack of initiative and experience. (The bill by the way was a supporting UN measure to help the impoverished of Congo, NOT the poor of America!) Until Americans stop being so ignorant to the facts, and start doing a little homework (which means doing more than just watching CNN or the six o'clock news,) we will all be bamboozled. I'm voting for the only SANE and EXPERIENCED candidate- Ron Paul, for better or worse. I've never given up on my favorite sports teams just because they aren't winning- which is a great sign of character.

John   March 3rd, 2008 3:53 pm ET

Canada is telling lies, so they can influence who will become the next President of the United States!

Bill Clinton signed the NAFTA agreement, and afterwards many American Corporations shut down their factorys in America. Americans lost jobs, and those factorys re-opened in Canada and Mexico. Thereby hurting the American Economy, but improving Canada and Mexico's economys!

Ofcourse Canada wants to keep those jobs and keep NAFTA. So naturally, they would rather see Hillary as President. The wife of the man who made it possible for Canada and Mexico to steal jobs from America in the first place!

Obama wants to amend or end NAFTA, so that those jobs will come back to America! To give us jobs and improve our economy after all the damage that the Clinton and Bush familys did!!

We know Hillary will say anything to get elected! Obviously, Canada will say anything to get her elected to!

Would you rather have Obama who wants to improve the American Economy and give Americans jobs????

Or would you rather have Hillary, who is more concerned about the Canadian and Mexican Economys???

Tom   March 3rd, 2008 3:52 pm ET

and talk about getting real? Hillary did not have to try and use this now did she. But she did and will do anything. typical washington insider and more of the same old crap. Don't you all just get tired of this? Hillary could have left it alone but she didn't and she knows it is absurd.

Willis   March 3rd, 2008 3:52 pm ET

HILLARY UNMASKED - WHY HASN'T THIS GOTTEN AS MUCH ATTENTION? AND WHAT ABOUT HILLARY;S SUPOENA FOR IMPROPERTIES?:

The real Hillary Clinton stood up at the Democratic presidential debate this week: angry, sarcastic, stubborn, secretive, arrogant, mired in the past, victim of the media, and still firmly convinced that she is uniquely entitled to the Democratic Party nomination and the presidency.

That Hillary hasn’t really been on display much since the debacle of her disastrous health care plan and the end of Bill Clinton’s impeachment trial, when she haughtily flaunted her combative personality.

But make no mistake about it — that’s the Hillary Clinton that we’ll see if she somehow manages to steal the Democratic nomination.
She’s always had a chip on her shoulder and a strange paranoia, but it’s definitely gotten worse. Now it’s not just the vast right wing conspiracy that is out to get her. Now it’s the mainstream media. How are they doing that? By asking her the first questions at the debates!
Her lifelong pattern of secrecy was once again evident. While publicly promoting transparency in government, she steadfastly refuses to release her personal income tax returns. That’s a clear tip-off that there’s something to hide. Recall that the Clintons selectively released tax returns in Arkansas, but refused to go back to 1980, when Hillary had her windfall in cattle futures.

During the debate, Hillary suggested that she’d release the returns “soon,” but her staff quickly backtracked. She implied that she’s been too busy to deal with releasing the returns. Does she really think anyone believes that it will take more than simply making a copy of the return? She’s stalling and there’s a reason for that.
Most likely, the return will show how much Bill has been making from his partnership with the Sheik of Dubai and his other business ventures. Should the spouse of a presidential candidate be in business with a foreign leader who needs favors from the U.S. government? Definitely not. That’s why we’ll never see those returns.
And then there are the Clinton Library records that document her schedule as first lady. She doesn’t want them released either because they will definitively show that she was never the co-president. The Library has been stalling on the release of those documents for years. During the debate, she said that she wanted them released as quickly as possible and seemed to blame the Bush administration for the delay. But today, the White House indicated that she had made no requests for any expedited release.
The old Hillary, the real Hillary, is back.

Hillary Clinton is furious that America has not agreed to her coronation. She doesn’t understand why voters are rejecting her and embracing Barack Obama. She just doesn’t get it.

Never one to engage in self reflection, she can’t blame herself or even her incompetent strategists and advisers. They’re too close to her. She can’t accept the sorry fact that her campaign has been a disaster because it was based on the past and not the future, because it was premised on her phony experience and maintaining the status quo, and because her negative outlook is completely out of step with the mood of America. So, she’ll blame the media. It’s their fault.

And she’ll keep screaming about what a fighter she is. More like a bully.

Fundamental Question   March 3rd, 2008 3:52 pm ET

"Change" Question: What has Obama done while in Senate to bring Democrats and Republicans together?

Heidi   March 3rd, 2008 3:52 pm ET

Why is it that the Obama camp's *every* response to *every* attack is to simply say "it's untrue, she's just politics as usual" and *never* provide evidence to the contrary?

And why are people buying it??

Think before you vote! What will Obama say when Iran accuses us of something? "It's not true, that's just politics as usual?"

We live in a world where nations with nuclear ambitions would be thrilled to "renegotiate." Will Obama have the backbone to stand up to them?

The problem with "politics as usual" is that the rest of the world's nations play the same game we do, and if Obama wants to change the rules, I want to know *exactly* how he plans to do it.

I have serious doubts he can do it.

Robert in Toronto,ON   March 3rd, 2008 3:52 pm ET

If you look at this entire political election from an outsider's perspective, you would truly see two things

1) The bias in the media for Sen. Barack Obama helping to fuel his popularity

2) The underminding dirty politics that Sen. Hillary Clinton has been willing to go.

That being said, even though there IS bias that doesn't mean that Barack Obama isn't your best candidate to run for President. And I fear that if for some reason Sen. Hillary Clinton wins the Democratic Party nomination, she'll be eaten up by Sen. John McCain. And now you're playing into the Republican's hands.

There is division among the Democratic party that really needs to unify if you truly want to change things come your Presidential Election in November.

With the current state of the U.S economy (which made ANOTHER new low against the Euro today I'd like to add) and a costly, continuous war in Iraq – America needs changes now and can't afford another 4 years along the same path.

And on a side note – Dave, you're not from Canada so please don't act like you are.

I'm sick of her shot gun approach. Lately, she's cocked, loaded and taking shots at anything that moves. No real message of her own, just a bunch of he did, he said that, he aint change.

Memo to her and her campaign, tell America about you. Screaming, "shame, 3 in the morning, and he's not holding his position in D.C.", we are can't hear what you are going to do.

The real shame is her approach, she claimed to be a bit busy lately and producing tax information and her first lady calendar was on the list of things to do, but she barely sleeps at night. Then skips out to SNL???

I guess she’s taking notes from Bill, take shots at anything that moves, in a skirt.

Derrick   March 3rd, 2008 3:50 pm ET

This is just the beginning to the Obama crisis!!!! To all the Obama supporters, do you see how you have been deceived by the words "change" and "hope"? Barack Obama's definition of "change" and "hope" are simple. He believes change is where he says one thing to get the votes, and then changes his mind later. His definition of hope is that he HOPES his supporters don't find out about it until the primaries are over!!!

Barack is like a mirage. It looks good until you get upclose, and disappears!!!

Jbecks   March 3rd, 2008 3:49 pm ET

Canadian Government seems to agree with the Obama camp that this is misrepresentations of statements. Not news. But then again if CNN can keep this race going it will be good ratings!

Taj   March 3rd, 2008 3:49 pm ET

Why are so many saying that this attack is evidence for Hillary's "desperation"? Is desperation pointing to the difference between Obama's talk and his actions, when the media is failing to do so? No, it's shows concern for America and the American people.

This Obama campaign official says his statements were mischaracterized, but I read that article and there was no way those quotes could be distorted – he explicitly states that Obama's anti-NAFTA stance is mere campaign rhetoric. Of course the Canadians will deny it as well, since they like NAFTA.

Diane in TX   March 3rd, 2008 3:49 pm ET

Why is it when Obama gets caught in a sticky situation, he is either misquoted, misjudged, or he plainly just made a mistake. With his gift of gab, and his ability to smooth over, why is he always opening his mouth only to insert his foot? Also, why has no media outlet never corrected Obama on his vote for the war that he was not in the Senate at the time. He did not get the same info as what the actively seated Senate received so he doesn't know how he would have voted. No media will report him as being wrong on this. Why is that? Obama was not a US Senator when the Resolution was signed in 2002, or when we went to war in Mar 03. He was not sworn in until Jan 05. Why does the media not correct this and let him march on with his band of lies.

Something is wrong with this picture.

I saw a reporter interview (from WKYC in Cleveland) and he asked Obama about this secret meeting his campaign had, "So, completely inaccurate, did not happen, end of discussion".

Obama was asked and then he replied, "It did not happen".

That does not appear to be the truth. Now, is Obama the do and say anything candidate who wants to get elected? Appears he is.

Megan O. Toronto, ON, Canada   March 3rd, 2008 3:48 pm ET

Independent   March 3rd, 2008 3:48 pm ET

I think these candidate supporters have an ego problem, refusing to accept that they made a mistake in selecting a bet on a candidate even though that bet is a wrong one.

Pat   March 3rd, 2008 3:47 pm ET

Clinton is not the only one "pushing" this story. CNN seems to be doing a good job as well. This is the 3rd or 4th article they have on the same info.

Anyway, I am concerned that the Obama camp seems to be splitting hairs....they denied any meeting, then they said it was unofficial and the comments were "misinterpreted." I would very much like them to come out and put this to rest once and for all. If someone spoke out of turn, deal with it and deal with it now. If this is indeed the truth, then they are in big trouble and they should not try to spin it....it makes it even worse.

TO CNN: Why is Obama's name not at the top of your page along with Hillary and McCain's? You guys have done a total 180, haven't you? Interesting...

A lot of Hillary support in here, hmmmmm

its probably two Clinton staffers just hammering at their keyboards trying to save a sinking ship.

Nice try Hillary,

I'm not buying it.

mathew   March 3rd, 2008 3:47 pm ET

I am from Hamilton Ontario, let me tell you NAFTA is a joke for both our countries. You seriously think having free trade between North America when pretty much every good is made in China is getting either of our countries jobs. NAFTA would be a good policy if everything we traded in North America was made in North America. Plus quit making mountians out of mole hills my government denied the story, everyone know Canada is to nice and honest to lie.

Canada for OBAMA

Willis   March 3rd, 2008 3:47 pm ET

Completely blown out of context!

I have not heard anything reported by Hillary's supoena for improperties?!

medved   March 3rd, 2008 3:47 pm ET

Obama is doing what all candidates do . . . saying what he thinks will get him elected.

The advantage he has over Hillary is that he's a newcomer who has so little politial past there is not a lot to roast him with. But it's clear, if you examine things over his short political career, that like everybody else he will have missteps to explain. (If, in fact, he hasn't done that already, which I believe he has. Look at his failure to take positions on a number of bils in his state legislature. What is that about if not political positioning?)

The saddest thing, I think, is the naivete/ignorance of an American electorate that believes words mean anything. Politics, whether we like it or not, is about deal-making, conciliation, compromise and, occasionally, concession. It's about trade-offs. Obama can promise us whatever we want to believe he's promising us but in reality he will be forced to dance through the same governmental system all presidents do.

Vote for Hillary or vote for Obama. Just don't be so naive as to believe he can force any significant change in the way government works.

regina   March 3rd, 2008 3:46 pm ET

FIRST HE DENIES IT, THEN IT IS THAT THE MEETING WAS MISINTERPETED, GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!!!!!!! NOW WHO IS USING THE TYPICAL WASHINGTON EXCUSES, WHEN YOU GET CAUGHT THE THE OTHER CAMP. OBAMA THE SAME OLD KIND OF POLITICIAN, ONLY DIFFERENCE HE LACKS REAL EXPERIENCE

Julie   March 3rd, 2008 3:46 pm ET

Obama lies and somehow it's Hillary's fault. This man has an excuse for everything. This is soooo wrong.

Uncle Sam   March 3rd, 2008 3:46 pm ET

As Barack Obama received greater scrutiny, this was bound to happen. Although a wonderful orator, he has been shielded from real criticism up until now. This does him nor the American people any service.

devilliers in Texas   March 3rd, 2008 3:46 pm ET

I've had enough; i was independent until this last minute. Now i'm pretty sure that clinton is like any other politician; SHE WILL DO EVERYTHING TO WIN THIS NOMINATION. THAT'S ALL SHE REALLY CARES ABOUT.
I'm going for OBAMA.

Obama 2008

D. Williams; Miami, FL   March 3rd, 2008 3:46 pm ET

Considering the facts surrounding this:

1) The Canadians have called it a distortion
2) The meeting was a tour of the University of Chicago by a professor who happens to be an advisor to the Obama

Why are we talking about this?

Chris, Silicon Valley, CA, USA   March 3rd, 2008 3:46 pm ET

This is not a candidate of change.

In my opinion, he is the candidate of "political positioning".

His "change" is all rhetoric.

Tell me one unorthodox position he has taken on anything.

Peter Canada Obama 08   March 3rd, 2008 3:46 pm ET

Oh.. I just want to comment on the first sticker on Hillary's new ad.
Eventhough Hillary ad portray Obama in a negative ways of he not chairing NATO subcommitee, the respondant are against her ad. 60% of the respondance rejected her tactice and called her too desperate.

What can she do at this moment to get back her reputation.? She has lost her credibility since she went negative on her rival our next President of the United State Of America Barack Obama.

I think she should step aside before tomorrow election and declare her support for Obama. That will clear the negativity people see on her.
Remember, close to call is not enough for her to continue her campaign. She has to win big or dropped out of the race with respect.

Honest Abe   March 3rd, 2008 3:46 pm ET

whaaaaa?? Politicians using rhetoric to win elections??

surely, this is a first in American politics!!

liberty   March 3rd, 2008 3:46 pm ET

More double-speak from Obama's campaign. If any press has the slightest negative slant toward "teflon man" they send out the henchman. See story on Politico.com "How Sausage Is Made".

It's about time the truth started coming out regarding Obama's dealings with Rezko, Alexi Giannoulias, and other shady characters who funded his campaign for Senate and who know what else.

Wake up people. The longer this primary goes on the better so Obama can be exposed .

Vote Democratic- vote for Hillary Clinton.

Gurv   March 3rd, 2008 3:45 pm ET

If the comment on NAFTA is another talk and talk. How can we be sure if there is any substance in any other speeches. Looks to me Mr. Obama is more suited for a "TALK SHOW HOST" rather than for the position of President of United States of America.

PS in VA   March 3rd, 2008 3:45 pm ET

The Clinton campaign is pathetic. Both parties involved (Obama and the Canadian government) denied any wrong doing , yet the Clinton campaign knows what happened? How ridiculous.

The Clinton family had more scandals than anybody!!!

bmitchell64   March 3rd, 2008 3:45 pm ET

The controversary between the Democrats has taken a new low. A letter about a private conversation is released to the press by an unnamed source, and this letter happens to make it to the public's attention just before the Ohio and Texas primaries. This is pure smudge, and to add to the "stink"... the letter comes from the Canadian consulate and the letter is a foreigner's impression of a private conversation. The fact that it is one person's interpretation makes the letter suspect, but add on the fact it is a foreign source and you have to wonder what was the real intent for sharing this letter with the press. The Clinton campaign has to be desperate to use this as fodder for their fight against Obama, instead of denouncing it as foreign intrusion into the American political system. I don't care for any foreign manipulation of your campaign process (positive or negative), and especially when it is based on a "letter from an unnamed source" and a questionable letter from a dubious representative of the foreign consulate.

Joe   March 3rd, 2008 3:45 pm ET

Obama freaks...why are you blaming Hillary for this? She did not release the memo and she did not order Obama's campaign to say this to Canada. You people are pathetic. No matter what is said you always blame Hillary. So immature just like Obama. Get real!

So help me, if I see one more Hillary supporter tell those who support Obama to "WAKE UP!" or "Wake UP, PEOPLE seriously, Hillary is THE LIGHT AND THE WAY" ...

Look at yourselves first. You are throwing your support behind a candidate who is behind and whose husband is behind a laundry list of scandal, back talk, backwards action, flip flops, power hunger, and more of the same. The only change she would bring to the white house is that she wears a skirt. She is the old guard and all of you who claim that Obama supporters are somehow in a trance (ps: thanks for offending your own party members over and over again) are falling for her nonsense! These little "attacks" are not just things she's stumbling on. They are worthless nonsense that she's spinning like a spider web and you are all getting locked in.

Now, while I'm wide awake, thanks very much, I'm asking that you peole READ A BOOK or look up some background info on Clinton. Yes, she has experience-experience as a tried and true politlcal rat. PS: I'm from DC. We have enough rats–perhaps that's why I'm so hypnotized over Obama. I dont' want 2 more moving back to the white house, only a few blocks from my house.

Joel   March 3rd, 2008 3:44 pm ET

I find it disturbing that Hillary and her campaign have decided to throw all the dirty utencils from their kitchen at the Obama's candidacy.

This is a clear indication of how divisive the Clinton's campaign has become. They are willing to mislead the American people to win votes at all cost. This is an outrage and it's high time for Americans to turn their backs on the Clinton's lies.

Even the Canadian parliament has come out against this latest attack. I am really amazed at how low our political process is.

Hillary it's time to drop out and stop trying to tear to pieces the Democratic party .

Micahel Guinn, Ventura, CA   March 3rd, 2008 3:44 pm ET

Hillary needs to apologize for spreading LIES and her supporters are so quick to jump on anything negative. Hillary is desperate- and has resorted to out-right lies and fear-mongering. If I didn't know better, I'd swear her campaign was being run by Kommandant Karl Rove!

Jared   March 3rd, 2008 3:44 pm ET

Uh...even the Canadians are saying there's no truth to this but we've got legions of Clintonites having hissy fits on web forums calling Obama a liar, traitor, blah blah. These are the tyoe of grownups who are allowed to vote in this country? Uh...enjoy it for the next 29 hours or so – it should be then that Hillary will be giving her concession speech.

Jane, Maryland: Lets see what CNN does with this   March 3rd, 2008 3:43 pm ET

All the Hillary supporters here must not have read the Canadian Government's statement, which contradicts what Hillary's dirt diggers have released.

I am amazed that these same people who are asking us to vote for Sen Clinton are part of a historically MISMANAGED campaign.

How do you go from having a 30 point lead in a few months to losing 11 straight elections?
How do you blow $120 Million on pizza, expensive hotel rooms, and advisers in a few months?
How do you sack your manager in the middle of an election?
How do you loan your own campaign $5 million?
How do you not read a national intelligence report, and yet vote for the war.

All of these, and you expect people to, in good conscience vote for Sen Clinton?

I hope the people of Ohio and Texas can show that being uneducated does not make you stupid. Don't allow Sen Hillary to manipulate you.

Julie   March 3rd, 2008 3:43 pm ET

Oh come on! He lied about this meeting- why did he do that? Now he is trying to shift attention away from this saying Hillary shouldn't push this- I think this is VERY important for the American public to know. Obama, you are a liar!

Darth Vadik, CA   March 3rd, 2008 3:43 pm ET

Hillary's campaign is tryint to take a fly and make an elephant out of it.
She never has direct answers, and she is trying to steal this election.

Obama has said "I don't want the super-delegates to give me their vote if I don't win the majority of the people's vote. How much more honest can you be. Hillary has said it is their prerogative who they vote for.

Now she's talking about suing in Texas.

I cannot stand her, all of you Hillary supporters are as delusional as the Bush supporters.

She is getting hysterical, and Hillary looks a lot less attractive when she is hysterical.

After the stunts her campaign has pulled, I don't care to see Hillary in a long long time. She is tearing down the party for her selfish reasons.

I don't know how I can forgive her for what she has done, but I'm a liberal so I probably will, just not right now.

Laura   March 3rd, 2008 3:43 pm ET

I really don't understand why this race is being scrutinized as it is. No one gave cared when Bush couldn't name the hot spots in the world. No one questioned his involvement in Harkin Energy. But here we are knit-picking every little scrap the media throws at the public.

All the griping, mud-slinging, etc. need to stop and we need to get down to the real business of getting this country back in order and getting our kids back from foreign lands.

Harold   March 3rd, 2008 3:41 pm ET

This is what is wrong with the nation....do some people read the entire article...or just sift thru it ..like your looking for gold. The article clearly states the Canadian gov't did not repeat did not convey that the Obama campaign was going against what they said about NAFTA in public. I will put it bluntly..to those idiots who don't take the time to research an entire item of discussion, then you deserve a third rate leader. No wonder this country is headed in the opposite directions. Some of these ppl probably voted fopr Bush in his reelection, and probably will never admit it...Dummies!!!

carlo   March 3rd, 2008 3:41 pm ET

Hey David, you posted that on the comments section on the other ticker item about this issue. You are working for Darth Clinton, aren't you?

Sounds like the dying days of the Clinton campaign, they are beyond desparate......if the statement is rebuked from the CDN Government as well, then I think Clinton has a serious problem here with credibility...Clinton's Last Stand, did not work well for egomaniac Custer either!

Thee   March 3rd, 2008 3:40 pm ET

The thing is, I am not surprised a Canadian official "leaked" such a memo to AP. You see, right now in Canada, we have the Conservatives in Power (that's equivalent to Republicans in America). If Obama does win the primaries, he is very likely to win the November election as well (judging by the sheer number of people he is able to mobilize). In that case, if Democrats win the American election, then Liberals (Canadian equivalent of Democrats) are likely to win in Canada as well. Yes, there is a likelihood of an election either this year or next. The Liberals are in a position to topple the conservative government right now.

So you see why what somebody who is an advisor to him during a low key meeting is such a big issue right now!

Fowler   March 3rd, 2008 3:40 pm ET

It was at least Obama's campaign representative goofed up....but it was the unfathomable Hillary who flip-flopped on NAFTA.

Hillary, part of the reason, more people hate you....is just for things like this.....

When will you learn......it's too late.

(The whole world knows NAFTA is for political positioning - so what?)

The more stories like this come about Obama, the more important it is that Hillary stay in...this is exactly why the party has superdelegates...the more stories that come out like this about Obama the less chance he has of winning in November.

P.S. I thought they originally said they had no contact with anyone in Canada.

Maggy   March 3rd, 2008 3:40 pm ET

I have been a Democrat all my life and I am sad to say that Hillary Clinton is the first democratic candidate for whom I feel a deep distrust, disgust and sort of political hate.

This woman would eat her own children if it would be only a slight benefit to her.

I am so tired of her politics of fear, her lies, her disception and distortions.

If she would be the nominee, I will vote for and support McCain.

Joshua College Station Texas   March 3rd, 2008 3:40 pm ET

Anyone who believes Obama is guilty of anything dishonest or sinister here is not understanding the facts, or is so committed to Hillary that they will say anything to win. Stop smearing Obama and his judgment. Obama is not hiding anything. If anyone is hiding anything, it's Hillary.

CHUDI   March 3rd, 2008 3:39 pm ET

Now I know why Clinton supporters behave like they do. The polls are so right about them. They are uneducated and very mean spirited just like the republicans. And worse is when we get the educated unitelligent Clinton supporters. It really hurts because the truth will be revealed about Clinton. She has just thrown a kitchen sink at Obama and will pay the price when Americans learn Hillary knew the truth but waited last minute AGAIN to swing lies and say she made a mistake.

Obama will not be able to withstand the pressure and scrutiny of the

Republican Party if he can't take this heat. His campaign's fall back

position to answer any critiques or criticisms will be as worn out and

flimsy as a wet paper bag. Sure, he wants to be held accountable;

just not by anyone who challenges him.

Rightsaid   March 3rd, 2008 3:38 pm ET

Listen to yourselves people. It's the sound of implosion.

No one is ever going to get the exact president they want unless that person actually wins the presidency. It's about compromise, and neither of our leading Democratic candidates is perfect. But, either one of them would be a heck of a lot better than having the GOP at the helm again.

I hope Obama wins this thing, but I'll happily vote for HRC if she is the candidate. Get over the hate.

Veronica   March 3rd, 2008 3:38 pm ET

It looks like the two-faced liar Barack Obama got caught saying anything to get elected and trying to be everything to everyone. Wake up!

chuck   March 3rd, 2008 3:38 pm ET

Jeff Radun, you said:

"Obama says during the Ohio debate he would redo Nafta then tells the Canadians he was only saying that for votes."

That's a lie that is exposed in this very article... where both the Obama camp AND the Canadian government claim that didn't happen

"Obama gave a great speech about how it was wrong to go after Alqada in Iraq and we should have gone after them in Afganistan yet when he is appointed to chair a commity on the fight in Afganistan he accepts the post and does nothing because he is to busy running for President"

Again... you're LYING because that committee had NOTHING to do with Afghanistan.

"Obama works for Kerry in his run for president and says he is not sure how he would have voted if he would have been in the senate at the time of the vote for the war in Iraq."

Once again, another lie... or, rather, a distortion of what he really said to make it look as if he was for the war.

So, to sum up, you are ANOTHER Hillary supporter who is a-okay with lying.... well, like candidate, like supporter, I guess.

But, Obama will win this nomination based on ETHICAL campaigning. I think it's pretty sad that your candidate and YOU have to rely on LIES to win this nomination.

Craig H, Mpls, MN   March 3rd, 2008 3:38 pm ET

Well, we see the final, last gasp, kitchen sink, smear campaign before the Clinton campaign has to call it quits. Remember the flurry of smear allegations the weekend before the the last primaries (false plagiarism charges etc.)? More of the same here. So desparate, so sad. It will be a challenge for the Democratic party to come together to defeat McCain after all these cheap tricks from the Clintons have caused such division. I hope that we can.

Alice   March 3rd, 2008 3:38 pm ET

I just wish CNN had been this fair in their reporting all along. It may be too late now in the game, and we will all suffer as a result if Obama actually is elected.

If that happens, we'll have the media to thank for the disasters that follow.

You know, there's probably a reason Karl Rove's been trying to help Obama beat Clinton. Word is the Republicans are sending Republican primary voters out to support Obama, since their own nomination's all sewn up.

Why is the Republican machine trying so hard to help Obama? Could it be... they have easy means to eviscerate him in the general election?

Wanda   March 3rd, 2008 3:37 pm ET

I am glad that Senator Obama has run his campaign without going in the gutter as Clinton. I had the pleasure of watching an interesting documentary this weekend featuring Amy Goodman at the greenpeace festival as well as a story called "stealing democracy" will we stop at nothing to keep business as usual in washington politics. Will it take our country failing into complete ruin before someone will tell the truth and report all of the news? Where are all the reports on CLinton's ruthless contributors, lawsuits and issues? I tried several times to watch your station this weekend but was totally turned off by your constant overwhelming coverage of Clinton. Anything to keep the conflict up between the two. Guess what I am a first time addicted watcher of your station but you have lost me from this point forward.

There was no meeting. The man was there for a tour not in an official capacity!

The Candian offical asked a question about Obam's positionon Nafta and the man asnwered it. The Canidian consulate then summed it up in a memo.

I do not see the problem here.

Ryan   March 3rd, 2008 3:36 pm ET

Man...comments are just ridiculous on this comment line. Hillary and Obama supporters–cut the crap. You're oth democrats and they both have the same positions on nearly everything. I'm an Obama supporter but you know what? if Hillary wins, I'd vote for her too. I just think Obama has the ability to reach across the aisle in a more constructive way.

You guys want someone to scrap about, try John McCain. He's the one withthe starkly different policies from the democratic candidates. He's the ones that's been nominated that admits he's in the dark about economic policy. He's also the one that Bush will support–shouldn't that give you enough incentive to vote for either Obama or Hillary, whichever one emerges from this war of words crap?

Obama '08, but if HIllary wins, she has my vote too. Anyone but McCain.

CLINTON 08!!

TC in Ohio   March 3rd, 2008 3:34 pm ET

What real Obama? are you kidding me. I am tired of all the cheap tricks that the media is using to try to taint the public's positive outlook on Barack Obama. Hopefully this silly season can end after tomorrow.

Matt   March 3rd, 2008 3:34 pm ET

Obama lied. Period.

Actions speak louder than words.

Adiam48   March 3rd, 2008 3:34 pm ET

I agree with CW in DC. She doesn't say anything about her fraud case at all.

kathy   March 3rd, 2008 3:34 pm ET

This is making me laugh – he should have just come clean. Now to cry fowl after he sent out mailers that were full on lies about Clinton just makes me laugh. The facts are the facts – he denied that anyone had a conversation when in fact they did. Obama is just another politician, playing the same old boys network game. While I think he is a great Senator – and will continue to be a great democratic leader, he lied about this. He set the standard when he published those inaccurate mailer. Shame on you Barack. He has a lot to learn and I don't want him using the white house at my expense.

Stephanie, Canada   March 3rd, 2008 3:34 pm ET

It's a relief that Obama doesn't actually believe what he says about NAFTA. The way he talks about it, you'd think it was the root of all evil in America today. It's delightful listening to him talk about economically isolating the U.S. and about being the candidate of diplomacy in the same speech.

Netta   March 3rd, 2008 3:34 pm ET

I don't what this NAFTA mess is about but I do know one thing.

Hillary Clinton plays nasty, funky, dirty politics. I live in NYC and can tell you without a doubt. No matter what happens with this primary, I will never, ever, never vote for a Clinton again. Not even for local dog catcher. If she manages to grab the nomination from Obama, I will either not vote or I will vote Republican for the first time in my life. I will never give Ms. Clinton my vote. Her tactics are too low down and dirty for me to support.

Cami   March 3rd, 2008 3:34 pm ET

I have truly grown to despise Hillary. I don't want to vote republican, but if she is the nominee I will simply not vote at all.

harry K   March 3rd, 2008 3:34 pm ET

He not only had the meeting ...He lied about it!!! Is that you want for President??? Not me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PEOPLE OF OHIO AND TEXAS AND ALL THE OTHER STATES WHO VOTE TOMOROW .....PLEASE HELP THOSE WHO IN THE PAST BELIEVED HIM AND VOTED FOR HIM EVEN THOUGH HE IS A FAKE!!

VOTE FOR HILLARY!!!

Texican   March 3rd, 2008 3:33 pm ET

Will the REAL Obama please stand up. Show us your courage, stand up to those Canadians on NAFTA. We are getting screwed down here in Arizona. Hillary at least stands by her position and doesn't call the Canadians if it is ok to renegoitate the treaty. This what you can expect from an Obama Presidency.

Save us from Politics   March 3rd, 2008 3:33 pm ET

Wait let's see. what kind of rock star spin can we put on this situation? The questions are mounting and I'm not happy with the answers.
Question 1: Why has Sen Obama been less able to perform his duties in the Senate than Sen Clinton during the campaign? Sen Obama's sub committee meetings (0), Sen Clinton's sub committee meetings over the same time period (2).

Question 2: When is Sen Obama going to release details of his land deal with Tony Rezko?

Question 3: When is Sen Obama going to speak to his supporters who are using coercion in the African American community by implying that an African American who does not support Sen Obama must be an "Uncle Tom"? (My guess on this is after the primaries are over, because he is gaining additional votes due to this coercion and particularly in caucuses where the vote is PUBLIC rather than PRIVATE) When a latino supporter of Sen Clinton made a remark that could have been construed as "racist" Sen Clinton immediately rejected and denounced the remark and the supporter, regardless of the political consequences that may have been garnered in the Latino community. I don't see Sen Obama having the same standard of anti racism (because coercion based on race is a form of racism). One other question on this issue: Isn't coercion illegal?

Question 4: So much for transparency in gov't, when the defense of Sen Obama's advisor speaking to the Canadian counsulate and indicating that the Senators speeches on NAFTA were political positioning, but as soon as it is made public...That's not what was said...yeah real transparent.

Larry, Apex, North Carolina   March 3rd, 2008 3:32 pm ET

HILLIARY IS SUCH A SAD CHARACTER.....

NO OBAMA   March 3rd, 2008 3:32 pm ET

Can't change a leopard's spots, huh, Oprahbama!! We don't need another double-talking, no substance, puppet.. We have had that for the past 8 years. Go away Obama...go back to the woodwork you crawled out from under. And while you are there, help out your ole buddy, Rezko!

Vote for Hillary....real leadership for the United States!

HG   March 3rd, 2008 3:32 pm ET

Another smear on Obama, even Fox News confirmed that. Seems CNN is heavy Pro Clinton these past few days. I guess the whining got to them. Talk about unfair and unbalanced.

Eric, California   March 3rd, 2008 3:32 pm ET

EXCUSES EXCUSES!

OBAMA IS A LIAR!

EFabian   March 3rd, 2008 3:32 pm ET

Obama supporters are so comical.

Apparantly all of this is Hillary's fault? It was a respectable Canadian News channel that outed Obama and not a cheesy tabloid entertainment show. Hillary and her campaign would have been idiots had they not jumped to the chance of questioning Obama and his double talk. If the shoe were on the other foot, Obama "Alimighty" would have done exactly the same thing.

I guess Obama needs to take some of his own advice "say what you mean and mean what you say" or whatever his rhetoric is, cause those words are sounding emptier now more than ever.

Jed in Texas   March 3rd, 2008 3:31 pm ET

All three candidates want to sell your job to the lowest bidder or bring someone into the country to take it from you.

rabblerouser   March 3rd, 2008 3:31 pm ET

Notice how whenever anything negative is said or implied about Obama, his people accuse Clinton of being behind it. Seems like THAT'S the old style politics he claims he's against.

Angela   March 3rd, 2008 3:31 pm ET

What??? Mr Fluffy got caught???

No – he was misinterpreted!!! That's it. That is what they are going to go with.

Since the "liar liar pants on fire – we didn't have a meeting" defense didn't work.

Wake up before it is too late. He doesn't represent change. He has no experience. He was against the war when 90% of Americans were for the war.? Hindsight is 20/20 and do we really know how he would have voted? He himself has publicly questioned what he would have done.

Mr Fluffy nearly pulled it off – but now the truth is starting to come out....

peter   March 3rd, 2008 3:31 pm ET

if anyone is wondering why cnn is starting to show a lot of hillary articles and talk about her more and being easier on her lately, it is because cable news want hillary to do real well this tuesday because they realize if Obama was to win big on tuesday then they wouldnt have anything to talk about for the next few months. so essentially the new networks and newpapers need hillary to do well in order to keep getting the ratings they have been getting.

Donavon   March 3rd, 2008 3:30 pm ET

some people should actually look up what obama subcomittees responsibilities really are since, john kerry who is the committees chair would be the one to hold meetings on nato

Veronica in CA   March 3rd, 2008 3:30 pm ET

Obama simply will not take responsibility for much of anything.

Barry, you've been called out.

Hillary '08!

Joelle, Racine, WI   March 3rd, 2008 3:30 pm ET

More talk, talk, talk, and talk or should I say lies, lies, lies and more lies by the empty suit...

CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN!

Charlotte   March 3rd, 2008 3:30 pm ET

I'd down play it too. This is a major flub by the Obama camp, one day before the vote! I hope Hillary mops the floor with him. First he denies the meeting, a paper trail shows up, now it was misunderstood? This guy is something else. At least he told the truth about not voting for the war, course he couldn't vote for it, he was not a Senator at that time. Closed door politics at it finest.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   March 3rd, 2008 3:30 pm ET

Ambitions that backfire deminishes ones opinion of Hillary and gives her no leverage against republicans. Hillary is destroying the democrat party and her own integrity in the process. This is really bad international press created by Hillary and shows poor judgement. Vote Obama.

RBNYC   March 3rd, 2008 3:29 pm ET

So now the Obama campaign's misleading statements to the citizens of Ohio about whether these discussions ever took place is somehow Hillary's fault? Wow - this is a topsy turvy world, isn't it? I trust the voters in Ohio to see through the spin from the Obama campaign. As for criticisms about the timing of the release/discovery of the memo - whose fault is that? If the MSM had scratched the surface themselves, perhaps this memo corroborating the CTV news story would have been released sooner.

GO HILLARY!

Mr. C.   March 3rd, 2008 3:29 pm ET

Thank you Consulate for making this clear. I know Obamas camp would never do such thing nor say such thing they had been accused of. Oh now the clinton camp would be crying and I think they need to apologise to the Obama camp for this false accusation. Hillary, herself needs to apologise to Obama camp.

John - Spokane, WA   March 3rd, 2008 3:29 pm ET

The Bark is coming off the tree just like Bill Cunningham said it would, this guy has a ton of Skeletons in his closet and here they come ! Just today, after claiming he had no business dealings with Tony Rezko, he claimed that he "RETURNED" all the money in question with Rezko. GIVE ME A BREAK !!

As Obama pointed out, the War is costing $12 Billion a week , HOWEVER, Obama said that if he pulled the troops out and found out that Al-Queda had a base there – he would return the troops. My question is HOW MUCH WOULD THAT COST MR. OBAMA !!! Besides, everybody in the World knows the that Al-Queda is in Iraq and has been there – that is, everybody except Obama.

babs   March 3rd, 2008 3:29 pm ET

You ever notice that Sen. Obama always has an excuse for everything, always playing the victim, ALWAYS accusing the Clinton campaign of "scare tactics" whenever an issue is brought forward about him.

MJ   March 3rd, 2008 3:29 pm ET

Obama uses double speak, just like a polician. He's still part of the Good Old Boys network. It's okay to bash a woman. Just down play any negative press. Isn't that just like the President that we have now?

ken   March 3rd, 2008 3:28 pm ET

Thanks Canada, this shows how two-faced can politicians be.

LeRoy   March 3rd, 2008 3:28 pm ET

Kitchen Sink huh..well friends you just wait until McCain gets done with Barrack he will wish he was over in kenya running from or for office...This man is a nobody trying to be somebody and me or you have not a clue who he is and youre willing to put our great country in the hands of someone you know absoluetly nothing about other than he gives good speeches...WAKE UP AMERICA!!!!!

Adam   March 3rd, 2008 3:28 pm ET

So much for "Change we can Believe in"................

Politics as Usual.

Bob, Lyons Oregon   March 3rd, 2008 3:28 pm ET

Clinton, Shame on you and your dirty politics, everytime you do this negative stuff, and if you became the nominee, I am leaning more toward McCain, so you might want to knock it off, as I am sure I am not the only democrat that feels that way. You and Bill will do anything to get elected.

Adam - TX   March 3rd, 2008 3:27 pm ET

Can't take a little heat, Obama? Your camp can never take criticism even when the proof directly counters your excuses. Maybe you should get your story straight and quit trying to swift boat everything. You're as much of a con as you're political ally and good friend Rezko. Same old Washington, Barack, same old Washington...

David   March 3rd, 2008 3:27 pm ET

Obama = Liar
Obama is a shame of this primary contest.
I can't imagine he is president.

phil   March 3rd, 2008 3:27 pm ET

Last week Obama's people swore that there were no conversations being held with Canada. CNN reported that. I heard it.
Now they say that the conversation occurred but their representative was misquoted or misunderstood.
What will they say next week?
It is impossible to believe anything that these people say.
The higher this Obama hot air baloon flies the more transparent he becomes.

Paul in CA   March 3rd, 2008 3:26 pm ET

Hmmmmmmmmm. Looks like the "yes we can" change reallly involves more of the same old "yes we will" play politics with America's future. My oh nm=my! Sen Clinton however has a clear record of being anti-NAFTA ~~~ just ask Carl Bernstein. And, also, the "I was misquoted" verse Sen Obama's adie espouses does not carry any more water than any other candidates. I guess we DO need experience instead of newcomer's "I told you so".

Paul   March 3rd, 2008 3:26 pm ET

It looks like Obama is gonna get away again.
I hope it's not too late for Americans to learn about the real Obama

April in Texas   March 3rd, 2008 3:25 pm ET

I only see this as normal political tactics. Normally when something comes out so close to elections its exagerated or misleading.

I continue to stand behind Barack Obama as he stands behind us (the people) .

I pray and hope we don't get another Clinton as a president or McCain who is just another Bush IMO.

I will give Obama a shot and see what he can do then decide if he has earned another term, but at the moment he comes across as the best choice for the United States.

Obama '08!!!

Peter   March 3rd, 2008 3:25 pm ET

When the campaign, the Canadian government, and the individual who is supposed to have been the person making the contact with the government all denying the accuracy of this report, can there be any doubt that the Clinton campaign is not aware of that fact. To put it out as something negative is not just plain wrong, but unworthy of her. As someone who has supported her, I am deeply disappointed.

Betsy from OH   March 3rd, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Obama goofed up again!

If we are supposed to trust him based on his words, how credible are they if he says one thing to America and another thing to Canada?

Wake up Obama followers!

Seriously, for the sake of America, WAKE UP!!!

D   March 3rd, 2008 3:24 pm ET

The fact of the matter is that when ever something comes out about Barack, He claims that its not what he meant, yadda yadda yadda. How much of this "not what i meant" rhetoric is going to last. I for one do not buy it. He is a liar and one thing that i hate is a liar. His dishonesty coupled with his media darling status is a shame because although i support hillary i hoped he would be a powerful part of her cabinet if not vp. After this blatant disregard for americans and ohioians specifically i have no faith in him as a democratic candidate.

-M. NYC

Although if I were an American I might find myself staring at him to read his face....particularly his mouth as I wouldn't be sure which side of it he was speaking from and what to believe comes out of it. Maybe the "amazing" Mr. Obama can learn to sing both national anthems out of his mouth at the same time.

clarity   March 3rd, 2008 3:23 pm ET

I bet they down played it!
If I was constantly caught promising one thing, but doing another... I'd play it donn too!

Obama is just a toy action figure with patented speak action.
If you squeeze his hand he says one of three things:
I gave a speech once.
I always get misinterpreted.
I want to change the world.

What's he gonna say when he gets his hand squeezed by the president of Russia, China, North Korea, or Iran?

I want to say LOL, but I just can't laugh about this.

Hillary 08!

stuart in l.a.   March 3rd, 2008 3:23 pm ET

I for one do not mind Clinton fighting back. Is she supposed to just sit back and watch him steamroll her campaign? No, she is fighting because she and her supporters believe she is the right choice for president. To do anything less would be cowardly. The problem is she is competing against someone who is appealing to the younger generation via rockstar appeal, and she probably wasn't expecting that. It's probably too late for her, and too late for the U.S. if that is how our presidents are going to be elected from now on.

Debra   March 3rd, 2008 3:23 pm ET

See..the Clinton supporters need to get the facts...She waiving a memo making herself look bad and desperate...

seyi   March 3rd, 2008 3:22 pm ET

Keep on trying Hillary. What's the use without fighting when you are about to rap it up. Good work Obama. I would stress the fact that she is giving it her all.
How can yo manage a country when you cant manage a campaign??? Ask hillary.

KIKI   March 3rd, 2008 3:21 pm ET

As usual Obama comes up with another excuse. Remember the "mistaken" votes"? or I was very busy to work on hearings on Afganistan...this man is not our best choice by far. If not Hilary we will have to go with MaCain.

Mike   March 3rd, 2008 3:21 pm ET

This is the CHANGE Obama meant, change from one thing he says to another. Meanwhile just parrot everything Hillary says during debates.

He is going to shaft the unions and workers. He even stated that there is no reason we can compete with workers overseas, but I thought he didnt want jobs shipped out overseas? How are we going to compete with laborers making less than a dollar an hour? I guess Obama will have to get rid of minimum wage and unions to achieve his standard.

Wake up people! They guy is hype and a fake. He is not telling the truth.

For jobs, for Iraq, for freedom, for security...Hillary is the right choice!

Lawrence - Virginia Beach, VA   March 3rd, 2008 3:21 pm ET

GO HILLARY.....Right back to New York or Illnois, somwhere other than the White House.

Why Now   March 3rd, 2008 3:21 pm ET

First Obama campaign DENIED any talk with Canadian officials, Now Obama campaign is saying they are misrepresented/misquoted.

What an amazing precedent Obama has set. Here is someone who is willing to lie to American Voters while telling the real story to the diplomatic staff of another country.

To take this one ominous step further, he wants to negotiate with our enemies. Will he tell us he’s being tough with Iran or Syria and stab us in the back by giving in to any and all their demands.

Jeff Radun   March 3rd, 2008 3:19 pm ET

Obama says during the Ohio debate he would redo Nafta then tells the Canadians he was only saying that for votes.
CHANGE YOU CAN BELEIVE IN.
Go Hillary

Obama gave a great speech about how it was wrong to go after Alqada in Iraq and we should have gone after them in Afganistan yet when he is appointed to chair a commity on the fight in Afganistan he accepts the post and does nothing because he is to busy running for President
CHANGE YOU CAN BELEIVE IN
Go Hillary

Obama works for Kerry in his run for president and says he is not sure how he would have voted if he would have been in the senate at the time of the vote for the war in Iraq.
CHANGE YOU CAN BELIVE IN
Go Hillary

Stephanie   March 3rd, 2008 3:19 pm ET

More smoke and mirrors to take the focus away from Hillary's losing campaign.
