King told an interviewer terrorists would celebrate an Obama victory.
King told an interviewer terrorists would celebrate an Obama victory.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa Republican congressman said Friday that terrorists would be "dancing in the streets" if Democratic candidate Barack Obama were to win the presidency.

Rep. Steve King based his prediction on Obama's pledge to pull troops out of Iraq, his Kenyan heritage and his middle name, Hussein.

"The radical Islamists, the al-Qaida … would be dancing in the streets in greater numbers than they did on Sept. 11 because they would declare victory in this war on terror," King said in an interview with the Daily Reporter in Spencer.

King said his comments were not meant to demean Obama but to warn how an Obama presidency would look to the world.

"His middle name does matter," King said. "It matters because they read a meaning into that."

The Illinois senator, born in Hawaii to a white Kansas woman and a Kenyan man, is a Christian and has said he has little connection to the Islamic religion, though he acknowledges he spent part of his childhood in largely Muslim Indonesia.

In criticizing King, Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor said, "These comments have no place in our politics." He called on John McCain, the apparent Republican nominee, to "repudiate them like he has previous offensive comments from his supporters."

Last month, McCain denounced an introduction from Cincinnati talk-show host Bill Cunningham, who referred to Obama three times as "Barack Hussein Obama."

UPDATE:
CNN's Deirde Walsh reports that Brandon Lerch, a spokesman for Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), says the congressman stands by the comments.

OH give me a break… no one can dictate that until after they are in office and making the changes etc. And what is with the Muslim attacks again? I know muslims who are nice.. why degrade them? HOW LOW!!

Mc CAIN… this stuff does not belong in POLITICS… denouce and reject! Geesh. Wish everyone had the same integrity and honesty and ran a clean campaign as well as OBAMA does!

I guess everyone wants a soap opera!

ia voter   March 8th, 2008 10:31 am ET

being from iowa and knowing how steve king operates, i can tell you that he will now either lose next november or barely keep his seat.

Ellie   March 8th, 2008 10:31 am ET

Shame on you Rep. King. As an American, I am insulted by your comments. I do not care abt a person's race, religion, or gender. By the way rep King, WE SHOULDN'T BE IN IRAQ AT ALL!

BeckyB   March 8th, 2008 10:31 am ET

Shut up, you fearmonger!!!!

Cindy   March 8th, 2008 10:33 am ET

Maybe not dancing in the streets, but maybe.. just maybe…

There maybe hope that we could end the standoff between them and us. Cause Obama will show the world that we Americans are not all bigots and racists, and fear-mongerers, like Rep. Steve King.

Charlie   March 8th, 2008 10:33 am ET

McClinton said she would pull-out in 60 days and King doesn't mention that - only Obama. It is funny to see Hillary team up with the Republicans.

Fear Mongering from the Republicans - what a surprise!!!!!!!!

lugina   March 8th, 2008 10:34 am ET

OHOOO , GOP RADY FOR OBAMA…BECAUSE i want CLINTON TO BEAT GOP…PERIOD…PERIOD

maynard   March 8th, 2008 10:35 am ET

lol   March 8th, 2008 10:35 am ET

Obama's middle name matters because if he is elected it might send a message to the rest of the world that the US isn't the most bigoted country of all time. End of discussion.

Kelly   March 8th, 2008 10:36 am ET

These are precisely the reasons why we need Obama as president. These blatant prejudices and fear tactics that represent the Republican party are only isolating ourselves from the rest of the world. You make me sick congressman.

Audrey in CA   March 8th, 2008 10:36 am ET

I don't care if they dance in the streets. In fact I think it might be easier to take them out - as Obama has repeatedly affirmed that he intends to do - if they're out in the open.

Ben   March 8th, 2008 10:36 am ET

Trust me, al Qaeda will be far happier if the republicans win. I doubt Bin Laden wants to lose his biggest recruiting tool…

YES WE CAN!!!!

sharon   March 8th, 2008 10:37 am ET

People like King are living in a fantasy world. what do you think the world is doing under this Republican administration. We are not exactly living in peace now are we??? We don't exactly live without fear right now. I don't think Bush and Chaney have made our world that much safer, with their policy of " if you don't agree with what I say I won't talk to you". And they have ruined our economy.

This is some more of the republican's fear tactics and this country is tired of it. that is why we need a new face in Washington, that will bring new ideas, and will talk to the leaders of the world. And that new face is certainly not Hillary. She is a republican in Democrats clothing.
I hope King does not get reelected when his term is up. We need to oust all of them. And Cnn needs to stop reporting all this negative crap about any candidate.

Nancy   March 8th, 2008 10:37 am ET

He's absolutely right. That's why we've gotta vote for my girl, Hillary, and show those sexist terrorizers how democracy is really done.

obama2008   March 8th, 2008 10:38 am ET

Does anyone truly listen to this kinda rhetoric anymore? Seriously…People are so sick of hearing about how basically the end of the world is going to take place in democrats take back power in the white house. I hope these neocons take their party with them and just go to hell.

vanchava   March 8th, 2008 10:38 am ET

Everyone seems to be attack Obama. Is it of fear that he will beat the Republicans???

Reality Check   March 8th, 2008 10:38 am ET

Yes a few muslims attacked America on 9/11 and multiple other times. That doesn't translate to anyone with a muslim sounding name or muslim is a threat.

I was attacked by skin heads when I was younger by this guys reasoning I should be cautious of all white people and white sounding names. I should celebrate only non-white people.

I bet he wouldn't think that is acceptable.

LadyLeo   March 8th, 2008 10:39 am ET

I am glad he is a congressman and not a fortune teller. How the hell does he know what Obama will do. Many of the President who we elected that we thought would do a great job did a terrible job and those we thought would do a terrible job did a great job.

kaimu   March 8th, 2008 10:40 am ET

In do respect, Sen. King should try to read the foreign press and be in touch with some of his constituents who may live abroad.

Overwhelmingly, they have supported Barack Obama's candidacy and hope that America will choose him in November.

They have been watching us and feel that America would indeed be worthy of more respect in that we have clearly chosen a new path, Change. Barack Obama unlike any other candidate would show the world that indeed America is righting her ship and we are indeed making the changes to be the upstanding leader that we once were in the global arena. This has been the sentiment across the world in their coverage of our primaries.

Senator King, please get out of the Beltway, talk to fellow Iowans or perhaps travel across the pond and open your eyes. Politics today is not the same as it was, think global as Americans we are also citizens of the World.

cheers, kaimu

spirit of america   March 8th, 2008 10:40 am ET

Just like all Kings are not the same, not all Husseins are the same. Martin Luther King must be rolling his grave. McSame as Bush either completely repudiates this racist attack or he is an intentional accomplice to it.

Anonymous   March 8th, 2008 10:40 am ET

This is exactly the kind of supporters J. Mccain does not need. Bad enough we has talk show hosts and radio commentators appealing to the "bigots of the world", now we have elected leaders voicing the same ideas. I would think the voters are smarter and can see through gutter politics. We definitely need new leadership in this country.

Logical   March 8th, 2008 10:41 am ET

Americans should be outraged at this new category of "name" discrimmination. As Americans, people like this should not be in public office. If someone such as this discriminates against ANYONE, no matter the reason, this is undemocratic. No one on this earth can do anything about the name our parents choose to give us. Did your parents ask you what you wanted to be called?

Marvel   March 8th, 2008 10:41 am ET

We would rather hear what the rest of the world has to say. So far, international interest is favorable toward Obama, but that is no reason to get into the right wing paranoia echo chamber, is it?

First of all, we are not afraid. And America doesn't like it when politicians speak hate mongering conjecture.

Anonymous   March 8th, 2008 10:41 am ET

Another GOP elected representative, that lives off the fear tattics.

Times have changed the American people are not stupid. Enjoy it while you can GOP and NASCAR nation.

Independent for Obama, then McCain, never Clinton

Jeri in PA   March 8th, 2008 10:41 am ET

Don't let the republicans and Clintonites create a race issue on Obama's middle name. Financial tmes did a survey you can look up where overwhelmingly 5,000 europeans said they wantd Obama to win the election. In America, Hussein is linked with fear, in Europe it's a common middle eastern name and people link it with neighbors and our using it as a fear factor as a signal of our racism against middle easterners. Take off the blinders and realize that lumping any individual into a nasty group based on color, race, gender or middle name is just plain fear mongering. Hate terrorists for being terrorists. Don't fall for the spin of fearmongerers. Obama seems to be the one who can work with Repubicans and the world.

John   March 8th, 2008 10:41 am ET

There is no doubt who CNN is pulling for! Your top story is titled "Fellow legislator saw little 'bold' about Obama" and is based on the the memory of a Republican state senator from illinois. Well it MUST be true!! He said it on the record!

Then you follw that up with yet another Republican saying that the "terrorists would be 'dancing in the streets' if Democratic candidate Barack Obama were to win the presidency. This is beyond the pale.

I am removing CNN.com from my favorites and will seek my "news" from another source. Despicable.

interesting   March 8th, 2008 10:41 am ET

Like I say to Obama Supporters.

You have not seen the last of Republican/Conservative attacks if you get the Presidential Nomination.

You really need to consider a VP choice with Clinton at the top which you will still be a first and will allow you to be GROOMED and get interaction on a global level to make your rhetoric a reality.

It took a Clinton to clean up after the first Bush and it is going to take a Clinton with charisma of Obama as VP to clean up after the Second Bush.

This isn't the last "slipup" by the repubicans….just like clinton, they are desperate and their real feelings are coming out….just like the clintons have more people out there that are going to have these "slipups", the repubicans do also…the one thing I can't understand is why any minority would be standing behind mccain on the stump….they must be getting paid…what this idiot said is only going to help obama….in fact, I bet that his nomination would help end war in the middle east because they will have much more respect for the USA….if you want to get out of all of the trouble this country is in now….vote for Obama! One funny thing is that if everything negative that hillary is saying now is true about obama, then I guess she won't be supporting him after he wins….that is when you will see that she was ole same politics….she knows her heart is beating inside when they are up there on the debating stage….bill is just jealous….but I would never understand why…..wait until those tax forms are released….

johng   March 8th, 2008 10:43 am ET

i cant believe this country after all that we seen these last 7 years may fall for this retarded logic again. First of all, al-queda wanted us to go in Iraq. What do u think they thought that we would just crumble over night because of 9/11, there stupid but not that stupid. They wanted to pick a fight and we played along. Alqueda didnt have a wide range of support before we went into iraq, now it is generally agreed they are stronger than ever, because our actions let them recruit disaffected people in the region who might not support them otherwise. And I agree BHOs name does mean something, although its not a comfort to them like u suggest but instead there worst nightmare, because it a sign to those people on the edge that maybe were not so bad after all. Lets have this debate!!!!

Terry   March 8th, 2008 10:43 am ET

When we as a nation invoke racism, fear and jingoism we take a step closer to repudiating our founders ideals. The U.S, ,when founded ,was an experiment.in a new political order it was not a static political model. In the original constitution we incorporated slaves as a % of votes. Politicians like Mr. King have always been around from the " no nothings" to "McCarythism". It is time for our nation to look inward and reflect on how we can reenergize ourselves to the rule of law an shared sacrifiuce to face a world that longs for our ideals instead of our rhetoric.

Tom   March 8th, 2008 10:43 am ET

Outrageous. There is no room for this garbage in politics. He should be removed from Congress. This fear mongering should strongly be denied.

How many times does Barack have to say that he is a Christian? Ignorance really makes you look stupid.

I am more than ashamed that this country has not moved away from the insidious racism. White america has become overtly covert in their continuous attack on this country. we shhould be outraged that people such as this continue to have a voice in american Politics. Barack hashad to apologize for being a polite gentle human being. he has had to move away form his religon, his afrocentrism, his respect for differing civil rights figures , his self so that he can appease white america. you journalists envelop controversy as long as it portrays Obama as irrelevant. If I don't see the outrage at folks like this I will continue to blod about it. this is the first legitimate opportunity for folks other than white meddle aged men will have the opportunuty to govern this nation. it is time to move asisde and give Barack Obama his due. whatever you say about him he is more of a manthan the best of you. He is that because he represents those in this country who have never had a voice. in 2008 there is no more place for this nonsense and this guy should be run out of office…

This is the type of comments and leadership our country does not need!

Barack Obama is an American
Hillary Clinton is an American
John McCain is an American
George Bush is an American
Nancy Pelosi is an American
Condelezza Rice is an American
Collin Powell is an American
Mitt Romney is an American
Bill Richardson is an American
Joe Biden is an American
Oh and there are also many Muslims who are Americans!

and sad but Steve King is an American!

Wake up America!
We can no longer allow fear, racism, political party allegiance and religion to cause us to be divided. It is sad but this is just ignorance at it's best by someone who is suppose to be a leader.

What the world really says to comments like this is…
"How can America tell us to embrace all people in our country, fight for democracy and respect uniqueness, when America will let someone's name cause them to dislike them. In addition, allow for their leaders to speak this way"

You know we were in the middle of the Vietnam War, when many in our country were being persecuted (water hoses, dog attacks, police attacks, hangings) and held back because of their skin color. In fact many of the same people of color were fighting and losing their lives in that war. The World saw us and said how hypocritical. President Johnson and other leaders of that day had the common sense to intervene at a National Level. That is leadership!

What needs to happen is our Current President, Our Current Democratic Leadership and those that are currently running for the Presidency need to denounce this Joker! In fact his own state needs to denounce him for these racist , religious intolerant and obviously ignorant comments.

An American Citizen, Tired of the Crap!

Patrick   March 8th, 2008 10:45 am ET

The reason that Republicans are so scared of Obama is because he offers something that no other candidate can: hope and change.

In contrast, Republicans are salivating at the chance to run against Hillary, because they know that all of the reasons she gives about why she is better than Obama (three more years in the senate, supposed foreign policy experience) will fall short against McCain.

When it comes to the general election in November, she will have no argument against McCain for the war (she voted for it), her experience (he has been in the Senate for nearly half a century), or her ability to make change. Unlike a lot of people, I don't have anything against her personally (although I find her negative attacks distasteful) but you have to admit that despite trying to keep her head down in the Senate and not doing anything controversial, that she is still a remarkably polarizing and divisive figure.

The remarks of Rep King are uninformed. Terrorists thrive on chaos and disruption. The invasion of Iraq helped their cause because it created chaos, gave them the opportunity to recruit other terrorists, and provided fodder to demonize the United States. Like McCain, terrorists are fine with drawing this out for 100 years.

Odile   March 8th, 2008 10:46 am ET

The "name" fear tactic is getting old. I cannot believe he's actually saying that he knows what a terrorist reads meaning into. I'd be a bit wary of someone who claims he knows how a terrorist thinks. Utterly ridiculous!

bskahn   March 8th, 2008 10:47 am ET

Who could possibly have better insight into the pulse of terrorists than a hack Republican legislator? Why are you even reporting this trash?

ANOTHER FEAR TACTIC   March 8th, 2008 10:47 am ET

FIRST HILLARY 3:00 AM AD WHICH LATER IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT SHE REALLY DOESN'T HAVE THE EXPERIENCE SHE CLAIMED AND NOW THIS. IS THAT HOW PEOPLE THINK YOU WIN ELECTIONS BY PUTTING FEAR IN EVERYONE. IS THIS A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY?
ISN'T IT FUNNY HOW GOP IS FOCUSING ON OBAMA WHEN HILLARY SAID SHE WOULD END WAR ALSO. WHY ARE THEY NOT MENTIONING HILLARY? ARE THEY SUSPECTING OBAMA WILL WIN THE NOMINATION?
WHY WON'T PEOPLE ACCEPT THE FACT THAT THIS WAR SHOULD NOT HAVE NEVER BEEN STARTED!!!!!!!! AND TO HILLARY SUPPORTERS THAT SAY ALL OBAMA DID WAS GIVE A SPEECH REJECTING THE WAR AT LEAST HE WAS OPPOSED FROM THE BEGINNING AND DIDN'T ALLOW BUSH TO FOOL HIM INTO BELIEVING WAR WAS THE BEST OPTION!!!!!!!

Alex from IL   March 8th, 2008 10:48 am ET

"His middle name does matter," King said. "It matters because they read a meaning into that."

It is apparent that it matters to you personally.

You would have someone glean everything about a person just because of the name they were given at birth? Here we go with the fear factor again. Are you so scared because of a name? Amazing, simply amazing.

Paul   March 8th, 2008 10:49 am ET

The truth is hard to take. Though I disagree that Obama's middle name will matter. I do believe however that Obama's approach on how he will sit down with all the tyrants and do the good talk is very naive and show the lack of maturity in his thinking. I also believe his push to rush troops out of Iraq will be detrimental to the Iraqies and will mean more fights in the years to come for america. I just do not see america sitting iddle by while tribal warfare and Iranian surges turned the country into a blood bath. Obama's foreign policy vision is extremely naive and that is the danger. His middle name matters little to none….after all, this country is truely a melting pot and there is no shame in the world knowiing that.

COMMON SENSE   March 8th, 2008 10:49 am ET

Montage   March 8th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Are we sure this congressman isn't Steven King? He sounds like a specter of fear sprinkling horror dust around the country. Quite possibly his paranoia is due to the unpredictable victory of Obama in the Iowa primary. I would suspect that this is a ploy of the republicans to further discredit a movement of change. Americans have much more to be concerned about than a person's name. Especially when you consider the current administration's inefficient efforts over the past 8 years to sustain the American economy. I would also add that these unscrupulous comments to demean the Obama train of change are another fear tactic to ensure a McCain victory against a Clinton nominee. This not only cast doubt upon voters willing to believe in someone who is looking to involve people in their government but it also perpetuates the ignorance of people in our country who truly do not embrace culture and differences. Shame on you Congressman King.

John Ra   March 8th, 2008 1:53 pm ET

Obama's image has a lot of benefits for America's image in the world's eyes, starting from his name and his family (Africa- Canada - South East Asia) to his vision to bring the hope and change for America and the world. America's image itself has been ruined by the illegal Iraq War and White Supremacists who perceive other countries are inferior (Steve King and other GOP members are obvious examples).

He's not only supported by the millions of US citizens, but also by millions of citizens of the world, from Canada to Africa, from Europe to Indonesia. Because they want to see one thing: A significant change for the world. And it has to start from the self-claim richest country: United States of America.

If the States can't be changed for their arrogant behaviors, then the rest of the world will choose and support a new leader for them, even though it's China.

Dev   March 8th, 2008 1:53 pm ET

Matt in IA   March 8th, 2008 8:26 pm ET

Ok here is one thing I don't get……Clinton saying that it took one clinton to clean up after first bush, it must take another to clean up after the second……….here is another thought on that, the first bush wasn't that bad, the first clinton wasn't that bad, the second bush was the was horrible, the second clinton will be horrible.

Pam from Iowa   March 8th, 2008 8:27 pm ET

This man does not represent the intelligent, open-minded, and highly educated citizens of Iowa, who are in the majority. He is famous for his racist ideas and the people in his district have an opportunity to vote him out of Congress this year. I hope they finally do so. The rest of the state is tired of him. Go Obama!!

Rachel, Storm Lake, IA   March 8th, 2008 8:29 pm ET

I hate this man and his politics as much as the next person and we have tried over and over to unseat him in Western Iowa, but to no avail due to the strong influence of the religious right in certain counties in the district. He also is overtly racist towards Iowa's immigrants and once called Joseph McCarthy "a hero of American liberty", so take all of this with a grain of salt, please.

Shanar   March 8th, 2008 8:31 pm ET

Bringing Mr. Obama's middle name into the picture is nothing but ridiculous…

So… Let's ask ourselves… In this great country, built and sustained by immigrants of all faiths, we still believe that one has to be of the Christian faith to become the president ??

What do I tell my extremely smart kids, with Indian first and last names ???

They should not aspire to be leaders, because they do not have Christian names ???

Oh BTW, they are also girls…. That would be a problem, wouldn't it ???

OOOOHHHH !!! That is so 50ssss.

Let's get real, and elect either Mrs. Clinton or Mr. Obama (or both) and show the rest of the world that we have finally arrived….

tr   March 8th, 2008 8:37 pm ET

Bravo! Vote for Hilary, she is real!

Richard, St. Paul, MN   March 8th, 2008 8:39 pm ET

Ah, yes…. another sterling example of Republican stupidity and racism. You'd think that these GOP cretins would learn that America is sick and tired of their lies and manipulation, as well as their stupid finger pointing and the way they tend to fabricate facts to their own liking. Perhaps that's why the Republicans have led us into a losing war, given us a $10 trillion deficit, spent like drunken sailors, borrowed from China, raised the price of gas and sent our economy into the toilet. And I don't even have to mention their hypocracy when it comes to homosexuality, or their penchant for embezzling our hard earned tax dollars. It's time to throw the bums out!

Funny stuff!!!   March 8th, 2008 8:39 pm ET

Bush and McCain had the terrorists cornered and then decided to look at Iraq for terrorists. Due to their BAD JUDGEMENT we now how al Qaeda in IRAQ. We didn't before.

So I believe there should be a correction here. The terrorists laughed once Bush and company turned away from the real threat in Afghanistan and went to Iraq.

We had the worlds sympathy due to 9/11 BUT now even non-terrorists hate Americans. SAD BUT TRUE!!!

8 YEARS WAS MORE THAN ENOUGH!!!

So everything Bush and Company predicted was wrong. What makes you think you are right this time? What a joke!!!

D   March 8th, 2008 8:40 pm ET

Last night on Larry King Live Kelly Ane Conway, a republican analysist said that Hilliary would offer Obama a seat on the back of the bus. Larry King asked her to clarify that statement. Isn't this what Rosa Park fought against?

Ellie   March 8th, 2008 8:43 pm ET

God help us, we have MORE idiots in office than we need or WANT. This Congressman is a disgrace for even suggesting such a racist based statement. Here's a prime example of the underlying tactics that still exists in this country.

McCain should REJECT and DENOUNCE this fool!!!

Matt   March 8th, 2008 8:43 pm ET

Ya….Dancing with joy that maybe they could have a forum to talk to America. Not America talking down to them.
Rep. Steve King should keept his opiion to himself and his message of FEAR……They are out to get you and Barack will help them.

King should step aside

Cecilia,Calgary,Canada   March 8th, 2008 8:45 pm ET

Why not ask us people overseas what they think.Who won the democrats Abroad primary to start with?

If America wants to eradicated and do away with anti american sentiments which breed terrorism, elect Obama!!

waldaL   March 8th, 2008 8:45 pm ET

This guy is an idiot. I wonder how it is that this type of ignorance resides within a man who is supposedly educated. His education, his real education comes out from his racist upbringing…shame on his parents for doing an awful job. I can't believe that he has the audacity to say Obama's middle name will cause and/or encourage this supposed dancing in the streets–Foolishness! This goes to show you how much an idiot he thinks people outside the US are….talk about arrogant and belittling. It's because of people like him this world is a pure mess. How the hell did he get elected for anything anyway?

If there is one reason why anyone, incl Al Quiada will be dancing in the streets it will be when these republicans are out. It's high time Americans (esp Democrats) smarten up about who they are putting in the White House, and not base it some personal bias on what a typical president should look like. I say that because many of you democrats put Bush in the white house.

Pick the candidate that strategically will be the strongest candidate to fight against McCain. The one person republicans don't want to go toe to toe with (as expressed by Limbaugh) is Obama. Republicans understand strategy and if some of you voters out there don't look at the bigger picture and you decide not to vote or if you decide to go for McCain just because one of the dem Candidates wins the nomination, at the very least think about your children and their children, the soilders in Iraq, and the countless other innocent souls that have suffered via bloodshed.

Think about your role and moral responsinility not only in your life, but of your repsonsibility to stand for all. We are all living and breathing the same air, looking up at the same sky..we are not different from each other….LETS CHANGE HOW POLITICS IS RUNNING IN THE USA

Go OBAMA 08!

Lefty (pitching, not politically)   March 8th, 2008 8:46 pm ET

When the left is in power, it does all it can to reduce our military strength…this is what President Clinton did for 8 years. Then when a conservative gets power, he has less to work with…this is why we were hit on Bush's watch…on Clinton's watch, they just let us make ourselves weaker and weaker.

Truth Please   March 8th, 2008 8:46 pm ET

You know, we as Americans stand around waving the flag, putting it on our cars, homes, clothes. Saluting it at all kinds of events and the sad thing is, in this country for some people it does not include equality and fairness for all. We love to say how we are the most wonderful country and how happy everybody would be to live here and how jealous they are of our lifestyle, but the quiet little secret that Sen. Obama's candidancy has uncovered is America's long held dirty secret RACISM. It is deep in the hearts of many and lays just beneath the surface of others. In a country where we proclaim to everyone that we are God's people and was founded on Christianity.

We soon forget the teachings of Jesus when someone that is a little different comes along. Racism is like a festering sore in this country and the sad part of it is the people that fan the flames don't even think about the true nuts that take this hatred to another level to torture and kill people. Yes people it still happens. As a 12 year old child I can remember going to the beach and having a gang of men come over and kick sand in our eyes, throw food and drinks on us and tell us to get off their beach. Can anyone even fanthom that happening to your child. Well, while you spew this hate or sit back and laugh because you think it funny. You will make it easy for some person to hurt or kill another innocent human being. God help us.

Barbara   March 8th, 2008 8:46 pm ET

King's words are truly disgusting, but the fact that you will publish them and run them on TV is even more disgusting. You share in the outrage of this kind of rhetoric by giving it legitimacy.

karentheadvocate….you go girl….keep on spreading the word.

John Haze   March 8th, 2008 8:46 pm ET

Thankfully I have QUIT the Republican Party.
can we say REDUNDANT ?
Republican motto OH no it's Al-Qaida at the gate !

can the republican party be charged with RICO?
when is his reelection? donation time for his opponent.

Sandy   March 8th, 2008 8:48 pm ET

Racist, dumb, stupid not sure how a person like Steve King get elected?

"Keeping it real"   March 8th, 2008 8:48 pm ET

If you think he's a bigot and a racist, what do you make of the people who elect these bums to office? Many republicans and a fair amount democrats could stand a bit of self examination as far as this issue is concerned. The whole world sees this country as a racist bigot nation trying to claim the moral high ground on other nations our power brokers don't like because they can't control them. They are witnessing what is being said about Obama, the distortions, the outright lies, the innuendoes. They've called this man everything but a child of God! There's something not just wrong but terribly sick about the whole thing don't you think?

DY   March 8th, 2008 8:49 pm ET

I ABSOLUTELY AGREE!

If not Hillary, McCain 08′

But Hillary WILL WIN!

YES WE WILL!

YES WE WILL!

Cliff   March 8th, 2008 8:51 pm ET

H. L. Mencken said that no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public. The same could be said of the American electorate that elected Richard Nixon twice and George Bush twice. Rep. King is pursuing this belief. He is a no-nothing jerk but he is counting on the good old American voter.

Sylvia from Texas   March 8th, 2008 8:52 pm ET

This kind of thinking is why the republicans can not win the presidential election. This man needs to be voted out of office immediately , so as not to bring further disgrace to his party.

Independent   March 8th, 2008 8:52 pm ET

The Republicans sure wants Hillary!

colene   March 8th, 2008 8:52 pm ET

America consist of all kinds of people, That's why we are a great country we cherish the good and ignore the bad.

Dem in CA   March 8th, 2008 8:53 pm ET

Iowans please vote this man out of office next time he is up for re-election. I pride myself on being a critical thinker but I don't have the time to look up his record. If those in Iowa agree that he should be voted out then I guess I'm on to something.

dp   March 8th, 2008 8:53 pm ET

IT MATTERS TO ME

Dale   March 8th, 2008 8:54 pm ET

Well, if King's comments are true it sounds like a Win - Win situation if Obama is elected!

With terrorists " dancing in the streets", thinking they had won perhaps they would just go home afterwards. With their "win" they would have no more incentive to blow themselves or others up anymore.

On another note - I think including Clinton on his ticket would be a huge mistake. After the "monstorous", slimy and underhanded way she has conducted herself I wouldn't (and don't) trust her.

Tim   March 8th, 2008 8:55 pm ET

If America can get it's act together and become the leader it needs to be maybe we can have more of a positive influence on the rest of the world. As it stand, comments like those of Congressman King, will only make those abroad view America as a racist bully that will do anything to keep people down.

Bill in Ohio   March 8th, 2008 8:55 pm ET

Just a reminder that not only do the Democrats need to take the Presidency, but we must rid the Congress of the old men who still live in the bigoted history of American. It is no longer 1950. Wake up Congressman King and rid yourself of those ignorant ideas.
Obama victory in 08.

Mike   March 8th, 2008 8:56 pm ET

King should be recalled, impeached, whatever….immediately.

Alexandra   March 8th, 2008 8:58 pm ET

Trust me Hillary McCain is behind this. Recently Rush Limbaugh endorsed her, and she keeps praising McCain's experience while mocking Obama's 20yr experience (her own team mate).
Shame on you HillCain so divisive.

Judy   March 8th, 2008 8:58 pm ET

How low will the republicians go????? The republicians play the terrorists card each time things are not going their way, keep the American people in fear and then they will follow like sheep. King is doing more harm to my country by saying such things than any middle name could every do.
SHAME ON YOU KING FOR PROMOTING FEAR, IGNORANCE AND PREJUDICE.

Christi in Canada   March 8th, 2008 8:59 pm ET

Barack Hussein Obama is a breath of fresh air. The rest of the world is watching and we can't wait.

I don't think Americans fully realize how much support they have lost in the rest of the world. Your news agencies including CNN don't report to you, how the world views you.

If Obama is elected - WOW - that support will start to come back and come back fast!

Paulina , Canada   March 8th, 2008 9:01 pm ET

No , this election should not be about race or gender.
However , you should be informed about your candidates and by that I don't mean what Bill Clinton did or didn't do a decade ago. That is so pathetic..!!
There is a radical islamic movement around the world against the west and I for one would want to know if my future President has or had any ties with muslim radicals. This should be investigated without one becoming paranoid or turning it into a smear campaign.
Because you still haven't overcome racism in your country you are unable to have talking points without offending each other.
Radical islamic fundamentilist will do anything to further their cause , hence we have suicide bombers and the horrific attacks like 9/11.
Now before anybody calls this fear mongering , let me remind you that security is one of the main issues in all western countries .

Al Gore for President   March 8th, 2008 9:01 pm ET

Gore/Clinton or
Gore/Obama with Clinton as Secretary of State
Guaranteed Dems in White House next 24 years
Although if the world ends in 2012 its a mute question, lol

Henrietta   March 8th, 2008 9:02 pm ET

Hillary & Bill should stop suggesting a clinton- Obama ticket. Obama has a comfortable delegate lead, their only option may be an Obama -Clinton ticket.

M Lowe   March 8th, 2008 9:02 pm ET

More fear-mongering from the GOP.

Who hired this guy? Public office?

He is a total idiot! He is a mad-man.

SD   March 8th, 2008 9:03 pm ET

its been said before "if American doesn't destroy ignorance, ignorance will destroy America. A whole congressman representing people will make such a stupid fanatic jim crowism statement even Hillary Clinton will not say that. Shame on you Steve King. Larry King and John King are good people don't dirty the King name

Debra   March 8th, 2008 9:04 pm ET

This guy is a nut case and shouldn't be holding a govermental job with comments like his. Muslims don't hold the key to terroism. Such prejudice toward a religious group reminds me of of a time some 60+ years ago. If I wasn't an Obama supporter, this idiots comments would make me support Obama.

Mark   March 8th, 2008 9:07 pm ET

What an absolute idiot……..there's really nothing else to say.

Kay   March 8th, 2008 9:08 pm ET

I have one word…. IDIOT

Marvin   March 8th, 2008 9:18 pm ET

There is no cure for stupid.

Ian   March 8th, 2008 9:21 pm ET

How incredible would it be to have a president in the U.S. who stands for American values with a middle name of Hussein? We might rise again to be the beacon on the hill we always believed ourselves to be.

Welcome to the beginning of the end of bigotry and fear.

Emil   March 8th, 2008 9:23 pm ET

King, was your mama so stupid?

Renee   March 8th, 2008 9:25 pm ET

Obama will make a good President because he is for ALL AMERICANS. Obama is a canidate who knows how to bring people together. Obama is the canidate who can bring this country together.

Rob   March 8th, 2008 9:25 pm ET

All these comments are missing the point. King is just stating how people outside the United States would perceive Obama winning the presidency. As sad as it is, he has a point. It is a crazy world out there. We, meaning all Americans, need to get more familiar on how other cultures see things and stop being so naive.

Sean Timmons   March 8th, 2008 9:30 pm ET

Steve King is 100% correct. A lot of niave fools have written about how horrible it was for him to speak this truth. Come on people, he was discussing their reaction, not some tea sipping liberal locked in a gated community who worships "diversity" without knowing what that actually means. Obama is a terrorist dream come true. For an illustration of his coming administration see season 6 of 24 the first 4 episodes. The terrorists will think America is weak, flawed and exposed. They will set in to finish us off.

Dave   March 8th, 2008 9:31 pm ET

Why is Obama ashamed of his name, specifically his middle name. Have seen any one of our presidents ashamed of their name. You have a man who insist people should not use his middle name, what else are we going be so sensitive in labeling him. You can't vote for a name who is ashamed of his name. He was given his name by his father. If he really did not like it, he could have officially changed his name but he didn't. If he is taking any action to change his name for some reason, why should we not call him by his real name to identify him. It is silly on his part and his supporters to cite racism for anyone who attacks his name and heritage.

Lisa   March 8th, 2008 9:31 pm ET

I think that McCain is playing "Good Cop - Bad Cop", because now when he "denounces and rejects", he looks like a noble minded politician, but he probably knew this guy would say something like this because they're all talking about it every day in their conference calls.
So I think this attitude will surface more and more and either McCain will have to eventually own up to this being his platform, or he will have to reject half of his supporters.

Chris from SC   March 8th, 2008 9:32 pm ET

Voters in Iowa need to get this guy out of office, saying stupid crap like this can't be tolerated and the only thing politicians listen to is when voters vote you out of office.

Show me a democrat to oppose this guy and I will send my hard earned money his or her way just so this type of crap ends.

Lorrie   March 8th, 2008 9:32 pm ET

Just another old white man sounding off. He should be ashamed. I guess he didn't realize his parents named him "dummy."

TJ   March 8th, 2008 9:43 pm ET

While the mean uglies, the fear mongering, the racist undercurrents are being spewed, by many, America is bleeding. Some remarks stem from rage, anger, fear, hate, bigotry and others from facts and caring for the whole of America. As long as we fight amongst ourselves America is drained of her power. Pay attention, move beyond the hype. Since we are all commenting via computer my guess is we have the access and the means to get the "FACTS". The 2000 election was the dirtiest I have seen in my 64 years as was the one in 2004. The sword of terrorism has frightened us into being like sheep because it has been used to manipulate us. Our Constitution has been decimated and we are less safe than ever before. FACTS. What did all the hype get us these past seven plus years? Are we going to fall for Carl Rove's tactics again? If we are duped by the same old tactics, if we give our power over to others who tell us what to think and how to feel, then I guess we can just stop complaining and live with the results of status quo. What kind of America do we truly want? Maybe we need to think for ourselves and stop being push me pull you's. Maybe we need to stop beating up on each other. The bottom line is we are all in this together.

mathew   March 8th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

hey i am from canada seems to me king does not realize how much of a recruiting tool bush is for terrorists. Although I have nothing against clinton i think it should be considered that if she wins it will go bush, clinton, bush, clinton. Now I am just an outsider but how you think people would think around the world would react, might seem a little suspicious to those that don't live in a democracy.

Lawal   March 8th, 2008 9:57 pm ET

Mr. Obama is as proud of his Kenyan heritage as he is of his American. So proud he refused to change his middle name when asked to do so for the convenience of some ignorant fellows. This is only because he is comfortable with himself. Which is more than King can say for himself. King, of course, has many reasons to be ashamed of his heritage. You would be if your ancestor was a barnished sheep thief or convicted murderer from Britain. In a poor attempt to conceal those facts, he changed his last name to "King." People like King are willing to die for their country in as much as death is far away. I wonder how many of his children or grand children are currently fighting in Iraq.

Keeping It Real   March 8th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

When I first heard his name Barack Obama the senator from Illinois
running for president. I told my friend , Oh no I am not voting for
anyone whose name sounds like Osama. However, I changed my
thought after listening to his speeches, debates, checking out his
background, what he has done for the people of Illinois his endorsements. Later I learned that he has won over many voters
like myself who felt the same way I did. He wants to bring people
together. What on earth is wrong with that? It's okay to have a change of mind or heart. However, I am concerned that all of the negative
comments coming from the Hilary camp will be used against Barack
if he is nominated. On the other hand ,if Hilary is nominated some Barack supporters will not support her and will vote for McCain or will not vote at all. One thing is for sure no matter which one is elected
President the color Green , not black, white, yellow,or brown is what it
is all about. Oh yea and maybe Gold!

Al   March 9th, 2008 12:13 am ET

All you have to do is consider the source. This amounts to nothing more than fear-mongering!
