WASHINGTON (CNN) — The Justice Department will monitor primary voting in three Mississippi counties that have a history of alleged voting irregularities, it said Monday.

Federal authorities will monitor elections Tuesday in Bolivar, Jefferson Davis and Madison counties "to ensure compliance with federal voting rights statutes," said the department's Civil Rights Division.

Division attorneys will coordinate federal activities and stay in contact with local election officials, the DOJ said in a written statement.

Only two weeks ago the DOJ and Bolivar County settled a lawsuit involving alleged violations of a federal voting law. The court order, signed by a federal judge in Oxford, establishes procedures for the county to follow with regard to provisional ballots, known in Mississippi as affidavit ballots.

The Justice Department alleged Bolivar County had failed to provide a system which allowed voters to determine if their provisional ballots were counted. The rural county in the state's Delta region is about two-thirds black.

Jefferson Davis County, in rural south central Mississippi, is 40 percent white, 60 percent black.

Madison County, which includes Canton in central Mississippi, is 60 percent white and 40 percent black.

Lets hope Billary doesnt sue the Justice department itself to try and disenfranchise the minority voters because polls show black voters are favoring Obama.

Darryl   March 10th, 2008 7:45 pm ET

God bless the DOJ personnel while they march on this journey for the truth. Now Hillary keep your hand clean. Congrats to Mississippi for Obama.

great! the clintons have been acting so much like republicans lately that it wouldn't surprise me if they tried to pull something.

Vig   March 10th, 2008 7:59 pm ET

Why is Hillary even botheing to campaign in Mississippi? Blacks will vote for Obama - it's that simple.

Casey, Atlanta   March 10th, 2008 8:00 pm ET

Mississippi burning! Hate, division, pain, and a county 60% black named after the first (only) President of the Confederate States of America- Jefferson Davis! How do you claim race isn't a factor?

Sandra   March 10th, 2008 8:14 pm ET

Make darned sure the Clinton Administration doesn't cheat! We already know about the irregularities in the New York primaries.

Chiman   March 10th, 2008 8:16 pm ET

This would make difficult for Nobama and his cult to play dirty tricks. huh?

Chris, Middletown, CT   March 10th, 2008 8:19 pm ET

oh know….the battle cry of the Democrats "they are stealing our votes" - there are "disenfranchised voters" - omg…..if you guys aren't playing the gender card….you are playing the victim…..maybe its time to knock that off….

John   March 10th, 2008 8:20 pm ET

Good that Justice is protectingvoter rights in those two counties but where else should they be in Mississippi? The Clintonians are getting very desperate…..keep a mindful eye on the ballot boxes!

New York expat in Santo Domingo   March 10th, 2008 8:27 pm ET

Let every vote count, wherever it is cast. We're a Democracy, right? I hope Hillary and Obama show respect for the process.

independent   March 10th, 2008 8:38 pm ET

This ought to be interesting to watch….

Brian   March 10th, 2008 8:48 pm ET

glad to see the DOJ doing something useful for a change. Too bad they are too chicken to investigate anyone affiliated with the White House.

Bob Stephens   March 10th, 2008 8:52 pm ET

The US justice department is going to monitor an election. That should make everyone relax…… Cheez……..

Val in PA   March 10th, 2008 8:53 pm ET

Sounds like a good idea, I hope the DOJ, Civil Rights Division is also on hand to oversee the "new" illegal primaries in Florida and Michigan.

Anyone notice Charlie Crist hanging out with McSame. He's so concerned about the democrats in his state being disenfranchised, that he went on a field trip with his future running mate. Meanwhile, Hillary is already here in PA trying to sway the vote. I guess Mississippi isn't big enough for her. Obama actually went home for a couple of days for a little R&R. He looks really fresh today, stomping around Misssissippi.

ross   March 10th, 2008 8:54 pm ET

Good! Let's have a fair election.

Arthur-Texas   March 10th, 2008 8:55 pm ET

Hillary will win her share of delegates in Mississippi. She will do well enoug considering the demographics of the democratic party there.

vera t   March 10th, 2008 8:55 pm ET

guess they are afraid Obama supporters will try the same tricks they tried in texas ie; locking the doors, taking caucus packets lifting voter roles, filling out caucus ballots before time????

Brenda Davis   March 10th, 2008 8:56 pm ET

I am fed up with the news media projecting in the nations minds who should be the Democratic nominee. It is ridiculous to watch the news favor Hillary Clinton. The Clintons have had their opportunity to run the White House, and frankly I dont want them back running the White House. Obama deserves a fair chance and the news media should give him that. America knows he is the better choice, if he was a white male, the news would be focusing on him. Once again, the news media reminds us of the racial prejudice that exists in America. Hillary even knows he is the better choice which is why she at to bounce to negative campaigning to win 3 states last week.

Give Obama a fair opportunity to make a difference in this country and stop trying to portray the country as wanting Hillary for President.

We do not want her!!!! After all , she will not be running the White House Bill Clinton will!!!

California Voter   March 10th, 2008 8:57 pm ET

I find it interesting that not only does one of Obama's top advisors talk trash about Senator Clinton, but so do many of Obama's supporters on these blogs. For someone who wants to represent a change in politics, many of his supporters sound like the same old politics.

Val in PA   March 10th, 2008 9:00 pm ET

I don't understand what the problem is with blacks voting for Obama. They have been voting for old white men for all of our history. When whites start apologizing for voting for whites, that's when blacks should start apologizing for voting for blacks. That also goes for those who choose to vote for Hillary simply because she a woman. The times they are a changing "my friend", I stole that phrase from McSame. lol

Black Man in Dixie   March 10th, 2008 9:01 pm ET

Vote your conscience, not your skin color!!!

Voting for Obama just because he is black, is a slap in the face of MLK and the Civil Rights movement.

Mike   March 10th, 2008 9:02 pm ET

(Please print this for Mrs. Clintons Supporters)

PLEASE keep an eye out for Senator Clinton's best interest!

Don't let the South pull the race card; this race is too close.

Obama can't be trusted (and everyone tries to slam Hillary), PLEASE!!

Go Hillary!

What next, if Hillary wins, they will want a "re-do…"

Clare   March 10th, 2008 9:05 pm ET

Good for them. they only need to read these posts to know that the obama followers will try anything.

Philip, NY   March 10th, 2008 9:08 pm ET

What about 80 NY districts of fraud in vote counting?

Why don't they?

Cody AR   March 10th, 2008 9:09 pm ET

just as bill said they would be an unstoppable force against anybody

joseph   March 10th, 2008 9:10 pm ET

It's better they use FBI too to monitor the Mississippi primary cos no matter what comes out of the primary, the clintons must still cry foul.I wonder if they did like that in New York primaries or maybe because it's not 60percent black.

Rob   March 10th, 2008 9:10 pm ET

What is the deal with Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama??? They have got to be the 3 most corrupt states in the country. Its 2008 and they are still trying to run elections like a South Asian dictatorship. I don't think these 3 states have ever gone 8 years straight without voter intimidation, ballot altering, or political scandal.

Conan   March 10th, 2008 9:12 pm ET

Voting irregularities? How can that be with no evil election stealing Republican running? Ohhh how quickly we forget………

Peter   March 10th, 2008 9:23 pm ET

The Justice Department should have monitored some of those urban precincts that reported so late for Obama in Missouri.

Kel   March 10th, 2008 9:30 pm ET

Good - just to keep everything clean. There have been complaints by voters of intimidation tactics, especially during the caucuses by the Obama kids who are very active in this campaign. Rather have the big guns in to make sure both sides are fair.

B. Smart   March 10th, 2008 9:31 pm ET

. . . .Make sure that Bill doesn't come dressed up pretending to be Elvis.

OBAMA 08.

Anonymous   March 10th, 2008 9:35 pm ET

Oh god'sh so Hillary was planning to do a little bit of dirty trick like she did in Nevada? Thanks to the DOJ

TEXAN   March 10th, 2008 9:40 pm ET

Hillary is concern about the American citizens. Obama is not. He would be a bad president. African Americans need to look at the issues and not the race. It's bad when a person vote for another person base on race. I am a black college student and I will vote for McCain if Obama wins.

Jay   March 10th, 2008 9:42 pm ET

WOW..Obama Cult Members are so far out there its scary. everyone is out to get them.

Lee   March 10th, 2008 9:47 pm ET

Sarah Smith - Are you old enough to vote? If so thats scary.

The witchdoc   March 10th, 2008 9:54 pm ET

'Buffalo Bill'

SHUT your mouth you 'Buffalo Bill Brained' dummy.

Get your uneducated fat body back into your rural trailer and prepare the rope to hang yourself when Barack is sworn in Jan 09.

jujub   March 10th, 2008 9:55 pm ET

Yep…we've got to watch the Clintonistas…afterall, not one black person voted for Barack Obama in Harlem. Imagine!

Bill, Covington,LA   March 10th, 2008 9:58 pm ET

From my vantage point it appears the federal government has been dispatched to Missippi to guarentee a win for the obama in that state. Should be a very interesting case to see their doccumentation as to how they talley the vote. With a DOJ under the watchful eye of leaky Lehey how can you loose.

NickNasc   March 10th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

After finding all of those FAKE Ballots for Hillary in the Texas Caucas' I think it is just FINE.

By the way WHY WAS THAT STORY BURIED!????

vl   March 10th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

CNN… don't bother to post this, but I thought you weren't supposed to use inapporpriate "words", ie: slurs.

LOOK AT Sarah Smith March 10th, 2008 8:38 pm ET

I find it VERY offensive and inappropriate

kwame   March 10th, 2008 10:34 pm ET

Good, so the Obama hooligans don't mess with the votes like they did in caucus states

Anne   March 10th, 2008 10:42 pm ET

Anyone participating in this race knows that the Obama "organizers" are the most likely to resort to dirty tricks.

Chappy   March 10th, 2008 10:46 pm ET

It's about time, but will they cover the General Election. I hear that
Carl Rove is interested in leading the pack.

gregg 45   March 10th, 2008 10:49 pm ET

wow.. like hillary can win the slave state of ole miss,,,, set me free obama,, and pay all my bills,,, oh . i already have that.. welfare,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

VIG POSTED THIS QUESTION
Why is Hillary even botheing to campaign in Mississippi? Blacks will vote for Obama ?

ANSWER:
Because Hillary R. Clinton will be the next president of America and she will be the president of all the people including the blacks that will not vote for her…. SHE IS LOYAL!

StopHating   March 10th, 2008 10:54 pm ET

How many were murdered just trying to vote? Why is it necessary for the Justice Department to be involve?

Texas   March 10th, 2008 10:57 pm ET

Looks like they should also monitor what the Democratic Party is planning for the re-vote in Michigan and Florida! Does anyone really believe that will be fair?

Billy from Philly   March 10th, 2008 11:01 pm ET

Hillary should just concentrate on Pennsylvania. I mean is Mississippi ever really relevant anyway?
