Obama had some sharp words for McCain on his campaign plane Thursday.
Obama had some sharp words for McCain on his campaign plane Thursday.

(CNN)Barack Obama suggested Thursday John McCain reversed his position on the Bush tax cuts in order to win the Republican nomination.

Speaking with reporters on his campaign plane, Obama noted the Arizona senator was a onetime opponent to the tax cuts, and said he has since reversed his position for political reasons.

"That was how, I guess, you got your ticket punched to be the Republican nominee," he said. "But he was right then, and he's wrong now."

McCain has said he supports the tax cuts now because of the economic slowdown and the stimulus potential they offer.

Obama also said he is against the tax cuts because they are an example of a "flawed fiscal policy."

"The notion that we would pile up more mounds of debt, literally borrowing hundreds of billions of dollars to pay for tax breaks for people who don't need them and weren't even asking for them I think is unfortunate," he said. "And I think it's an example of the kinds of flawed fiscal policies that have gotten us in such a hole under this administration and a republican congress."

UPDATE: Responding to Obama's remarks, McCain said later Thursday "it’s very clear that I voted to make those tax cuts permanent on several times."

"Senator Obama has stated very clearly his desire to increase Americans’ taxes," he added. "That will be one of the great debates we have if he is the nominee of his party. He wants to raise Americans’ taxes and put more of their money into the hands of the government. I want to keep it in the wallets and purses of the American people."

How is Obama going to pay for all his proposals (850 billion dollars worth)? Can you say major tax increase?

Chuck   March 13th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

When I hear Obama stand up, without notes or a speech in his hand and discuss ANY real ISSUE clearly and concisely with reccomendations for a solution, then I'll think he has what it takes to be my president. All of his comments sound "canned."

Debra   March 13th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

I would kind of like to get a tax break. Nothing will make up for the rise in gas prices but it might help.

DaveP   March 13th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

Wow great idea Dems! increase taxes while the whole country is slidding into a recession. That will surely get it moving again. Full steam ahead! lets get them taxes moving! without more taxes this country will never sustain itself and then all you Dems can finally shut up after you have nothing left to spend on yourself since you have given it all to the government. Hell rather than raise taxes why don't you Dems just give the government all of your money that would fix the deficite. I think 50% of my money going to taxes at many levels of government is more than enough? If it's not the Feds it's the state or the county or the local city or the schools. Bunch of socialist tax crazy idiots. I am tired of government digging into my pockets every day.

Eric   March 13th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

I have watched this election and have followed the canidates closely. It amazes me that some American people are so brainwashed and bigoted. Obama has never said he would raise taxes he speaks of fiscal responsability. So I ask why these bigoted republicans are and some uninformed independents keep saying that he will? Let us be real about this people do not want an African American or White female to be president!

David, Gilbert Arizona   March 13th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

Raise taxes during a recession. That always makes sense…if you don't have a clue about economics.

McCain is unelectable. His positions on illegal immigration, NAFTA and tax cuts have made it so.

Clinton is the ringmaster of the corrupt and shameless Clinton family circus riding back into town, scorching the earth.

Obama is a man who thinks for himself and is beholden to no special interest group. That's where the future of this country lies.

Albo   March 13th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

HAS SENATOR OBAMA THOUGHT THAT WHEN McCAIN OPPOSED THE ORIGINAL TAX REDUCTION, HIS ARGUMENTS WHERE CORRECT, BUT THAT NOW, GIVEN THE SITUATION, IT SREVERSAL
WILL DAMAGE EVEN MORE THE ECONOMY AND ACCELERATE THE
FLIGHT OF CAPITALS F L I G H T O F C A P I T A L S TO OVERSEAS ????

WITH ATTACKS AS THIS ONE HE IS SUPPORTING THE ARGUMENT THAT YOUR INSIGHT IN ECONOMICS IS NOT SATISFACTORY OR, WORSE, THAT THIS IS ONLY A 'OLD WASHINGTON" WAY TO CAMPAIGN (AS OBVIOUSLY HILLARY IS DOING TOO !!)

THE SAME IS VALID REGARDING YOUR NAFTA ATTACKS, WHERE
MEXICO AND CANADA ARE INVESTING THEIR DOLLARS OBTAINED BY EXPORTS BY PURCHASES IN THE US, INSTEAD TO ADDRESS THEM TO THE SCARCELY MENTIONED CHINA, WHERE THE PROBLEM REALLY LAYS !!

sacto joe   March 13th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

Senator Obama is absolutely correct in attacking McCain's position.

1. Making the tax cuts permanent will have ABSOLUTELY NO POSITIVE EFFECT on the present economic situation.

2. The present economic situation can be seen to have resulted from cheap money/weak dollar caused by a Fed that decided to stimulate a falling economy by dropping rates to HISTORIC LOWS. Why did the Fed step in? Because the Bush administration, instead of increasing the debt and stimulating the economy by spending, decreased the tax base by giving tax breaks to those who did little or nothing to stimulate the economy.

3. People have been duped and had it slipped to them for years now and don't even have the common sense to realize it.

Taxes seem to be a very big issue when it comes time for an election. Truth be told, I have no problem paying taxes as long as….#1 the tax is used to benefit all Americans and #2 after taxes are taken, I have enough money left to support myself and family. The wealthy do not mind paying taxes….they have more than enough money left to live a very nice life. To me the real issue should be how to keep and bring good paying jobs to America.

6.Florida votes (he initially wanted it counted, until he found out he lost)
7. All of the above

oh brother…like a democrat has never changed their mind on an issue before. spare me. they change their minds as often as a baby has its' diaper changed! they are the pioneers of it, for goodness sake. it's like they wake up every morning and wonder what side they will take that day on any given issue.

G.moody, Alabama   March 13th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

Finally CNN post a topic not spinning it off as race motivated! I'm sick and tired of all the spinning! Let's just get down to what matters! What are the real issues facing this country.

Obama is correct..it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see McCain is painting himself differently to win over a wing of republicans. You have plenty of Obama haters out there. The one thing they haven't noticed is the fact Obama is taking a beating from two candidates..not one!

Both McCain and Hillary are constantly firing on him. I give him credit for keeping the fight as clean as it has been. There's been plenty of low blows thrown. He's still my choice for President. His race has nothing to do with it either unlike some of you posters!

The ones the can't see the direction this country is headed in are the ones that refuse to see where we are headed if change doesn't come soon! Thanks republicans for voting in Bush and Cheney TWICE…I just love paying nearly $4.00 a gallon for gas!!

And some of you people are worried about some taxes!!! Hell you'll never see the money any way, if we keep sending it all over seas!

BUTCH   March 13th, 2008 2:16 pm ET

Carl   March 13th, 2008 2:11 pm ET

Obama has also failed to mention that he would do the exact same thing in the exact same situation because it would mean a presidential lock.

How dare he say one thing, when he would really do the other because it's common sense.

Sarah L, Fayetteville, AR   March 13th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

Charlotte, Sylvia, and NEVEROBAMA:

The fact that you people use every thread to post something spiteful, divisive and off-topic is truly spectacular. It's fine if you don't like Senator Obama, but, at least, focus on a real issue–not just Clinton talking points. This article doesn't have anything to do with Clinton vs. Obama. Get over yourselves.

rday in va   March 13th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

Forget the tax cuts
Let's cut government spending by:

Eliminating the department of home land security, Education, Health, Commerce, the USDA, FAA and transportation.

Then let's reduce the salaries of congress and the President and add term limits

this will reduce the debt by billions in the future and the rich can keep there tax cuts.

Jimmy B.   March 13th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Wait… the notion that you would increase taxes now, or even send a signal that you would, while teetering near a recession, with the FED throwing liquidy into the market like crazy; is absolute nonsense.

What economic principles say you should increase taxes while in a hard economic slowdown? Even the Keynesians don't agree with that approach Obama. Who's advising you on your economic policies? Herbert Hoover?

JP, Illinois   March 13th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Obama is by far the strongest candidate for President. He always sends a clear message and that's what is needed for this country.

John   March 13th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

JHS, that comment is silly. Although he wasn't in the U.S. Senate at the time of the vote, quotes from Obama at the time clearly demonstrate he opposed the war. But now that the troops are there, Obama is not supposed to vote to fund the troops? Get a grip. That's not flip-flopping. There's a difference in supporting the war and supporting the well being of the troops.

Sarah L, Fayetteville, AR   March 13th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

McCain was right to oppose the tax cuts. He opposed tax cuts for the wealthy when there was such a tremendous defecit. That was sound judgment and he received a ton of criticism for his stance.

As a Democrat, I had enormous respect for John McCain when he took this position and I am now disappointed in him. There is a greater defecit and the wars are costing more and more everyday. His logic was right the first time and, other than political maneuvering, there was no legitimate reason to change that position.

John, Little Rock AR   March 13th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

I'm not sure if most of you democrats are familiar how the tax cuts are going to work. The rich aren't receiving any. I beleive it's for those who make $150,000 or less per year. However, I do remember lots of democrats in the Senate who said it should not just be limited to those under $150,000 but for everone. Bush did not have the rich getting any checks, the democrats did.

People has right to change their views and no one should condemn it. I don't agree with McCain on tax cuts. So I will not vote for him. But I don't thin I will vote for Obama either, if he start to act like a hypocrite.

"The Major" in Lorton, Virginia   March 13th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

Obama has an excellent point, however, he should be cautious on how he communicates this to the American public. His statement has a potential inference of no tax cuts and leaves an open inference to tax increase……and what the American people don't need at this time is more tax hikes.

Senator McCain will do what ever it takes to have is conservative Republican ID card validated. Whether it's flip-flopping or deal making with the hard core conservatives, he's up for the task. Four more years of Bush is what we can expect if McCain were elected. That’s why it is so critical for the Democrats to quickly unite under one Presidential candidate…Barak Obama.

Beth Trivian   March 13th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

Grow up, Obama. Thinking adults can change their minds according to the context of the environment. For example, while I might not be in favor of abortion, I can certainly change my opinion if the mother's life is in danger. Or, at one time I supported Ethanol production until I found out that the way we make Ethanol actually destroys and depletes land and resources just as quickly as oil production.

John McCain was right about opposing tax cuts at the time, and he's right about supporting them now. Things change.

AJ, IL   March 13th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

Obama has not flip-flopped as nearly as much as McCain and Hillary over the last 10 years. Obama's record has been consistent on NAFTA, IRAQ, Israel/Palestinian position, and other such issues. "Tax cuts are flawed fiscial policy"

Whoomp there it is!!

HP Boston   March 13th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

Barack you best do your homework before you take on the real professionals! The grownups are there to help you, pay attention!

California Independent   March 13th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

Obama goes after McCain for flip-flopping? Too rich. Obama should review just a couple of his own flip-flops… flip-Nafta, flop-Iraq, flip-his Israel/Palentinian position, flop-mail-in voting (why he would co-sponsor a bill and then publicly state it's a bad idea is beyond understanding), flip-superdelegate position, flop-Griffith, flip-credit card bill……

jhs   March 13th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

Hey Obama, how is this any different from you being against the war, but after you reached the Senate, voted the SAME AS CLINTON regarding the war????? Face it, you're both (McCain & Obama) flip-floppers!

brian   March 13th, 2008 1:19 pm ET

Uh Charlotte from 1:09 pm. Get YOUR facts straight. What Democratic Senate Majority? A 50-50 tie when you throw in Lieberman to the Republicans.

The fiscal policy of the last 7 years by the administration and their Republican lackeys have drove our economy off of a cliff. To continue the same behavior is reckless and dangerous. Obama is spot on.

Bison (Anchorage)   March 13th, 2008 1:18 pm ET

It is nice to know that I can count on Charlotte saying something stupid and hateful in every thread. I am comforted in knowing that people as ignorant and blind as her are involved in our political process.

Insane in the Mccain   March 13th, 2008 1:17 pm ET

I realized that Hillary has to attack Obama and Obama has to attack John Mccain and Mcain has to unite his party…

WOW….this will be a great summer.

Breka   March 13th, 2008 1:17 pm ET

Voting for Mccain is voting for Bush again. So, if Americans want the best for this country, don't vote Mccain. Except, if you want Iraq war to continue, If you want the economic situation to continue by using the country revenue to sponsor the war, if you want millions losing their homes, and if you want this country to go down the drain, dollars losing its' value, then vote for Mccain.

But, If you want a complete change from the old establishment to a better future for United States of American, then VOTE FOR SENATOR OBAMA.

OBAMA 08

Dian Mo   March 13th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Pelosi, stop!

Both Clinton and Obama proposed their version of joint ticket. What is wrong with you?

The only job for Democrits now is which version of joint ticket that you wanted. Let do the mail-in votes by every registered Democrats now. Rush! Rush!

Anastasia in Obamaha, NE   March 13th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Obama is right. Why should the wealthy get all the tax breaks while everybody else fights to stay in their homes and have gas to go to work? McCain has jumped on the George W. policy wagon. Anyone who supports McCain is delusional.

Carl   March 13th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Define irony… democrats complaining about tax cuts when they are the ones that have doubled the national debt in 11 months

NEVEROBAMA   March 13th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

Obama shut up!!! You have been wishy washy too!

WAKE UP AMERICA VOTE HILLARY OR MCCAIN!!

Chris Mannoia   March 13th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

Long term tax cuts? I'm lucky I can still put gas in my car! How about working on that, Hillary, Barack, and John…!

M.   March 13th, 2008 1:12 pm ET

One sane voice within an insane government…Listen to him!

Lets Get Ready for Change!   March 13th, 2008 1:11 pm ET

Interesting point of view!!!!

Wait… I hear something…..

Oh, it is the Obama hater… he lacks experience, he is all talk and no action, he is empty, he flip flops, i just don't like him…

I think I covered them all…. Just trying to save the Obama haters some typing..

Closed minds will not bring change nor will business as usual!

Amy in Iowa   March 13th, 2008 1:10 pm ET

Finally an Obama article by CNN. And one that didn't use race as it's journalistic topic. Thanks for a real issue.

James   March 13th, 2008 1:10 pm ET

Good at least one of the Democratic candidates realize who the opponent is. Why can't they both start contrasting themselves against the Republican nominee opposed to attacking themselves and endorsing McCain over their fellow Democrat nominee.

Anonymous   March 13th, 2008 1:10 pm ET

This whole political bit is getting more DISGUSTING every day BACK STABBING OR WHAT EVER YOU WANT Call it . THE ONE WITH THE MOST MONEY IS THE WINNER, what a waste of so much money while people in THIS COUNTRY ARE BEING PUT OUT OF THEIR HOMES.

jacky   March 13th, 2008 1:10 pm ET

The national is: $9,405,716,515,488.41 and McCain is talking about tax cuts. "The National Debt has continued to increase an average of
$1.69 billion per day since September 29, 2006!" Does anyone care?

Charlotte   March 13th, 2008 1:09 pm ET

Excuse me, but doesn't Obama know we have a democratic majority in the Senate? He needs a lot of training. First, get your facts straight before you speak. Second, speak only what you know is true. Better yet, keep your mouth shut, until someone with more knowledge speaks first.

Sylvia   March 13th, 2008 1:08 pm ET

to mimi de la cruz for OBAMA…..
you are a mindless fool….Obama changes his mind as does EVERY politician…….NO politician is HONEST
wake up fool!!!!

Letha, Sioux Falls, SD   March 13th, 2008 1:08 pm ET

Isn't Obama the same man who said he wouldn't play this finger pointing thing? This has been going on now for a few weeks. So much for this politicians word, it doesn't seem to be worth much or we are seeing the real man come out to play!

txpoodoo   March 13th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

Well, Obama is right, a spade is a spade

I have been following McCain very closly since I believed from the beginning he would be getting the nomination. He did a complete 180* on the tax issue. Just like Romney signed up for a lifetime membership of the NRA right before he announced his candidacy.

They only did it to "appear" more conservative.

Vince   March 13th, 2008 1:05 pm ET

Obama is right, it's these flawed economic policies of Bush that have gotten us into the mess we're in now.

If you want a continuation of the present course vote for McCain, if you're ready to change the course vote for Obama.

Voices of Reason   March 13th, 2008 1:05 pm ET

I don't get posted on important issue and now you want me to comment some old news! get a live CNN

jfs Memhis, Tn   March 13th, 2008 1:05 pm ET

Right on President Obama…………you are reading the competition correctly!!! Fight for us Pres. Elect !!!!!!!!!!!

Goodheart   March 13th, 2008 1:05 pm ET

Obama is delving into unchartered territory for him. He has the most liberal record in the Senate and would raise everyone's taxes. I don't think this is an issue he wants to bring to the forefront. In addition,
in recent weeks, I've read reports that Obama is losing ground among men, women, Democrats, independents and Republicans. His only base is the youth vote and the black vote. He's going to sink quickly after he gets crushed in Pennsylvania.

Amy in Iowa   March 13th, 2008 1:04 pm ET

McCain said he doesn't even know about the economy. Bush didn't know how much a gallon of gas is. Yet, these Republicans know how to give economic breaks to the rich, who didn't even ask for or need them. And they both support a war that is costing us billions of dollars we don't even have. Obama is right to slam McCain on changing his stance. It is hurting the country.

Don Bowers   March 13th, 2008 1:04 pm ET

Alright! I can't wait to pay more taxes! The less I have to take home the better, I say.

Randy - Denver   March 13th, 2008 1:04 pm ET

Hmm interesting thought.. for those of you who support this I ask you to change a few words.. l8ike McCain to Clinton and tax cuts to FL/MI Primaries.. same thoughts by each candidate..LMAO but this will not be posted.

It is nice to see a dem get back on track and stop the silly in fighting I am not surprised that it was Mr. Obama who was the first to get back to the real issues.

mimi de la cruz for OBAMA   March 13th, 2008 1:04 pm ET

Maybe McCain has not changed his mind. Maybe he just does not remember what his position was on the Tax for the Rich. McCain and Hillary change their mind every other day.

John   March 13th, 2008 1:04 pm ET

John McCain has absolutely no chance to win the Presidency unless he takes a crash course in economics over the next few months, and flip-flops back to opposing the Bush tax cuts.

mike from PA   March 13th, 2008 1:02 pm ET

Even though this article has nothing to do with Hillary..watch all the haters post negative comments on her. The lady can not even she said she is sorry or thanks Obama. There is always something for the haters!

An Army veteran   March 13th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

Go Obama! Too bad Hillary is still hanging around like a bad cold.
