A new CNN poll shows Bush's approval has reached a new low.
A new CNN poll shows Bush's approval has reached a new low.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Just 31 percent of Americans approve of how President Bush is handling his job, according to a poll released Wednesday, the fifth anniversary of the start of the Iraq war.

Sixty-seven percent of those questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey disapprove of the president's performance.

The 31 percent approval number is a new low for Bush in CNN polling, and 40 points lower than the president's number at the start of the Iraq war.

…And Jack Cafferty and the rest of the "Most Obiased News Team on TV" still think Baralf is the "golden boy" - I am starting to think they are all in love with him

LOL - I can't wait to see the look on Frankenstein's (Jack Cafferty's - his frowning mug always reminds me of Frankenstein) face when he finally has to wake up to the fact that his "golden boy" is unelectable despite all his hard work to make Hillary look like a "monster"

Goodness - he WILL REALLY look like Frankenstein then - maybe his head will explode

Truth Please   March 19th, 2008 9:09 pm ET

I don't know why his popularity is so low. People in this country love to be lied to. How else could this man be in office for 8 years. I guess the I Spy nature of hiding everything from the public, while he and his administration robs the country blind is appealing and if he sends the country and the economy sliding down a slippery slope to hell, then oh my God please don't admit you made a mistake and seek help to correct it because then you're weak. Oh My God the people in this country are incredible. They/ve take everything away from you. Your pensions, homes, jobs and you still threaten to put the same thing back into office again over what a old minister said God Help Us.

That's because 31% of the people polled are asleep, don't buy groceries, don't drive cars and think having a president who tramples on the constitution is an okay deal.

Drive The Nation   March 19th, 2008 8:51 pm ET

If McCain is going to support a Bush War Policy, economic policy, over-all foreign policy, immigration policy, and trade policy, then he's going to have a hard time with the 67% of Americans voting in the General Election.

McCain isn't winning anything. He just doesn't have any Republican rivals anymore, so it seems like he's winning. These are just polls created to make news headlines and stir up controversy between Democrats and Republicans.

If 67% of Americans disapprove of Bush, and Bush endorses McCain, and McCain follows in line with a Bush policy- people aren't going to vote for McCain.

McCain might as well have had Satan endorse him.

George "W" Worst Bush

Richard, St. Paul, MN   March 19th, 2008 8:47 pm ET

I can't believe that the 31 percent are that blind or partisan to see what a downward streak Bush has taken America on. But I guess even a cretin like Bush can still fool some of the people some of the time.

The Awful Truth   March 19th, 2008 8:40 pm ET

The job was way over his head, and we should have raised our collective radar when he couldn't find a VP. That should have told us something. I honestly believe he never really wanted the job, but it was given to him, like most of the breaks he has received in life.

I don't think he really understands what he has done to this country. If he didn't like, or understand a law, he simply did away with it, or ignored it. We have played a heavy price for his presidency.

He can't give us the lives he is responsible for, but he can tell us the truth about the war, for once. Unfortunately, I don't think he is that big of a man. Sad.

John Starnes Tampa Florida   March 19th, 2008 8:34 pm ET

That those 31% can approve of the wholesale trashing of America is tragic….do they even bother to be informed?

Not On Our Watch   March 19th, 2008 8:32 pm ET

Dan,

McCain could never be president because he has not distinguished himself from Bush. If you're president, and you have a 31% approval rating, that means 69% of the people think you're doing a lousy job. If they think you are doing a lousy job, why would they vote for someone you endorse? That's crazy.

No Dan, if Bush didn't learn from the last election in 2006, he will definitely get the message in 2008. Americans resoundingly don't approve of his administration, and where he has driven this country.
My only regret is that we didn't wake up 4,000 men, and women ago.

Bob   March 19th, 2008 8:27 pm ET

Clever the way you guys at CNN allow posts to be seen on one IP address while concealing it from all others. What I don't understand is why you fellows censor me so routinely. As people in the journalism business, I'd expect the opinions of everyone are viewed objectively and fairly. Apparently I'm mistaken. I wish it were otherwise.

WHAT A SURPRISE! Duh, the 30% are the rich and foolish that are too greedy or too stupid.

As a democracy having this grinning fool sitting in the white house as our country is suffering from coast to coast is an absolute disgrace!

When Bush talks about what he is doing for the people, he is talking about these 30% and NOT the rest of us.

It's incredible that his approval rating is as high as it is. What the heck is wrong with that 31% of Americans? Imagine the statue of three monkeys: "Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil." That's the only way to ignore the disaster that has been the Bush administration.

Jenny, Rio Vista, CA   March 19th, 2008 7:35 pm ET

I'm surprised his approval rating is so high considering the amount of negative opinions one reads in the media and online. Perhaps I'm getting my information for different sources than the population that support Bush's handling of the war.

Finally - America wakes up to the fact that they have a dud of a human being in The White House calling the shots…..

Robert Edney   March 19th, 2008 6:58 pm ET

Which makes it fascinating that Maverick McCain remains tied to the President on several fronts. Of course it also makes McCain vulnerable on the same fronts in the general election. If McCain is not the next president, I suspect the single biggest reason will be the cost of the war in dollars and how it has and does impact the economy. As the election cycle continues and the economy struggles look for the dollar cost in Iraq to become a much bigger story than in the past. The unfortunate truth — realized so brilliantly by another Clinton campaign now long ago — is that the economy trumps nearly everything else — including human life.

Strum   March 19th, 2008 6:56 pm ET

31%????? That has to all Republican base who would approve of Bush even if he was a killer…..oh wait..he is!!

I hope that America never again stoops to such negative depths to elect such a dunce. To allow people like Karl Rove and Tom Delay to manipulate and destroy people to put George W in office is ridiculous.

Bush's legacy will be "The President who tried to ruin the greatest Democracy in the world. " We have his legacy of two recessions….he is also the "Great Divider" and "The Almighty Uninformed" and "The Father of Turd Blossom".

Actually like I said before, Bush real legacy will be his immigration plan…you know the one where we have such a bad recession and everyone goes home to his old country. You see he had it all figured out all along…..destroy the economy and the illegal aliens starve out….what a deal!!!

Drive The Nation   March 19th, 2008 6:49 pm ET

It will only get lower. Even conservative Republicans are fed up with him. He's the worst kind of politician. He not only championed policy that started to tear down the Constitution, he promised his base a bunch of policy enforcement dealing with immigration, economic and fiscal responsibility, and a full proof plan for the "war on terror". He didn't deliver on any of these fronts, so not only is the liberal to moderate left unhappy with his job performance for obvious reasons, but he has betrayed his conservative moderate base. His stance on abortion and the appointing Supreme Court Judges that interpret Roe vs. Wade, the "Bush" tax cuts, and capturing Saddam is the only thing Conservatives have to be pleased about. All of which are relatively unimportant compared to the other issues that haven't been resolved under his Presidential watch.

His poor leadership after Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans added to the mounting consensus, that he wasn't prepared or experienced enough to run the country. He signed for huge tax cuts for the very rich, and spent huge amounts of tax payer dollars on a failure War on an enemy that doesn't have a flag. He borrowed money fiscally irresponsibly with no plan to repay- and he worked at ruining social security. He hasn't done anything to secure jobs in the US, and has actually pushed global initiatives and encouraged companies to shipi jobs overseas. He defended the multinational giants and corporate banks in the predatory lending crisis, and blamed all of the Americans who bought homes- and claimed that they were simply irresponsible home buyers. His corporatist agenda had and has been clear and shameful. His failed education bill "no child left behind" was a complete insult to our future generations, and just another masked initiative that sounded great, but wasn't.

Bush also entered the middle east claiming he was fighting the terrorists and vowed to find Osama Bin Laden in Afghanistan, but ended up capturing Saddam in Iraq. Halliburton builds pipelines, while Exxon Mobile/Cheveron reach ridiculous record profits while the price of gas rises close to $4/gallon and the nation is in a recession. In a capitalist society, financial institutions like Bear Stearns are rewarded for failing, and the American people are penalized for following the rules. His economic stimulus tax rebate is an insult to the American people at best.

He is not a man of the people, he is a coward and a politician for the few and privileged.

Worst President EVER.

President Bush is an honorable man. Just like many leaders, they depend on the information they are provided by those with hands on. Despite all of the political bull being presented to the public, this president is NOT sustaining this war for any political gain. Face it, it's over for him. What would be the motivation? Do you honest believe there is some sort of hidden agenda? And what would that be? Don't you think we would all know what that is by now? Remember, congress isn't a Republican monopoly.
Fact is, for whatever the reasons were that got us here, we are where we are and we cannot back out irresponsibly. Clinton and Obomma both say the would withdraw. The reality is that we will have to stay for as long as we need to, regardless of who is in the Whitehouse.

Why did we give him a 2nd term when we had seen during the 'evils' surrounding him in the 1st? Dick and Rumsfeld needed to be thrown out. But what did we Americans do? Elected my Bushie to the office and gave Dick and Rumsfeld a chance to add to their counts of evils.

We need to disapprove ourselves and rate ourselves lower… Not my poor Bushie.

Tiffany   March 19th, 2008 5:41 pm ET

Who ever the 31% is must be trying to move on the moon with the President cuz there is no way anybody just be in agreement with this man.

Tim Eastman   March 19th, 2008 5:41 pm ET

For any Poll to be taken seriously, one needs to know how many participated and where.
If 2 people are polled and one disagrees, then the Polls show 50% disapprove.
IF this Poll, say of 1000 people, was taken at the Democratic Convention, it too would be 'skewed', and obviously worthless.
For ANY NATIONAL Poll to be actually 'worth' anything, there needs to be Significant numbers from ALL areas to get a 'pulse' beat of the issues at hand.
There are, after all, 50 United States.

Useless   March 19th, 2008 5:40 pm ET

This guy is an Idiot!!!!!!!!!!!!…………….can someone please give me some VALID, extra emphasis on VALID, reasons why this guy got nominated, elected, and why are there still some people who support his policies, ideas, and JUDGEMENT!!. I have listened, researched, and listened somemore. I can't understand how he became the leader of, and arguably the most powerful country in the world. TWICE!!!

Bob   March 19th, 2008 5:40 pm ET

I guess this poll only shows that 31% of Americans are either profitting from Bush administration policies or are brain dead. I'm betting that out of the 31%,,,the lion's share of those are brain dead. There can't be many (percentage wise) who are profitting,,but imagine the extent of those profits!

John Smith   March 19th, 2008 5:37 pm ET

'Thou shalt not commit adultry" This is one of the highest laws in life!

Hillary STAYED with Bill after Bill's multiple infedilities. May be we should DUMP Hillary for sticking with a sinner, her husband!!

Well for those who want Obama to go back to his pastor, who would be the greater sinner here: Hillary who stays with …….after all his…..; OR Obama who stays with …after a …..? Becuse you like to JUDGE, you go ahead and throw the first stone with a clean conscience!!!!

Pauline Schneider   March 19th, 2008 5:37 pm ET

It's impossible to believe that anyone can still support this clod.
I feel sorry for those who have so bought into the Bush rhetoric that they cannot believe the wool has been pulled down to their feet.

31% is still too many people who have been successfully fooled
by Rove and Bush.

Kenneth   March 19th, 2008 5:36 pm ET

31 % of Americans are morons if they actually approve of Bush.

Seattle Sue Seattle, Wa.   March 19th, 2008 5:36 pm ET

I can't believe 31 percent of Americans still approve of this man Bush.

peter   March 19th, 2008 5:36 pm ET

people are finally beginning to see how much Bush really hates America. The american flag lapel pin just isnt cutting it anymore.

Lou   March 19th, 2008 5:34 pm ET

I wonder who are these mysterious 31 percenters.

Didn't think there were that many CEOs and bloodthirsty warmongers in the USA.

Independent in IA   March 19th, 2008 5:34 pm ET

This is a man who has to ask the snake, "…how's the weather up there?"

Vig   March 19th, 2008 5:34 pm ET

This should be rephrased to his disapproval rating of 69%,

Pat M Canada   March 19th, 2008 5:33 pm ET

Here's my Disapproval for one more! Do an International Survey on that same question and I'm sure the Disapproval rating would be 90% or higher !

But don't feel too bad Mr. President after watching your You Tube videos I am betting you'll be making a fortune as a Comedian when your term is over! I laughed so hard I had to use tissues to see my monitor screen!

abm Habibullah   March 19th, 2008 5:33 pm ET

John Mccain is a fine man but I can not support him as long as he is walking in Bush's shoes.

HAHAHAHAHA like a needed a poll for that one.

Thomas Jefferson   March 19th, 2008 5:32 pm ET

To see what this man has done to the Union is appaling. I don't understand why everyone does not just vote Democratic!

31 % all probably rich and well connected. The only people who seem to like bush. How we let him get away with this for 8 years ill never know.

Grif   March 19th, 2008 5:31 pm ET

It is not a matter of how "He" handled what is going on in Iraq.

So easy to second guess…. I suggest some people do some research. of what happened in Iraq from June 2001, until 2003… The say he did wrong..

Do your own dam research … Don,t say another word until…

Can;t you read……

Concerned Citizen   March 19th, 2008 5:31 pm ET

The thing I can't figure out is what those 31% approve of. Our nation is suffering from his failed policies both abroad and at home….what's to approve?

Steve   March 19th, 2008 5:31 pm ET

Whats amazing is that it is even that high! How could 31% of Americans think he's doing a good job? $500 Billion on a war that didnt need to be fought (remember, it was about WMD's, not the 4 or 5 other reasons since brought forth), Record deficits, Economy in a recession , Banks failing, housing meltdown…. Can we afford 10 more months of this clown?

Linda   March 19th, 2008 5:30 pm ET

Wish he would have had these lows 4 and 8 years ago. Guess it's a little late now, as everyone knows he doesn't care about polls. I just hope that our country doesn't blow apart from his command.

Ramin   March 19th, 2008 5:29 pm ET

Dear President Bush, we need harder sanction for Iran .

Roland Madore, Fort Collins, CO   March 19th, 2008 5:25 pm ET

More lies on the fifth anniversary, but we can turn the page!

On the fifth anniversary today, the president standing up in the Pentagon to deliver his take on the war was a total insult and another betrayal to a majority of Americans who believe his war in Iraq was ill-advised and wrong from the start. Rather than arresting protesters outside the IRS today, the 43rd president should have been arrested long ago for his “high crimes and misdemeanors!”

As a silent protest in honor of our troops, I chose to shut my TV off as soon as the president came on. In good conscience, I could not listen to his lies to the nation again. I turned my TV back on when I thought the analysis would start. Ironically, the more important, major address about Iraq today was cut off by the cable news networks. How absurd, and what a disservice! Senator Obama’s North Carolina speech today—what little I was able to catch—was the more honest, substantive account of the realities of Iraq. More than ever, we need his presidential leadership, simple candor, and credible vision for America’s future.

From analysis following the president’s speech, there was more of the same old baloney, as he claimed to have no doubts about waging the war in Iraq despite the “high cost in lives and treasure.” He claimed he was right about the surge, while the situation there, at best, is still very fragile and tenuous and, in an instant, could ignite again. He said we needed to stay there to finish the job. There was no mention, however, about Afghanistan or the four previous years of war in Iraq before this last year of feigned successes.

With about 33,000 troops killed in Iraq, a $600 billion dollar price tag, and no end in sight, today’s pronouncements are again proof and reinforcement of a failed presidency. The lies following 9-11, the chaos of going into Iraq in the first place, the surge of al-Qaida there as a result, the “Mission Accomplished!” declaration, the occupation, and now the misstatements of the current situation there by Senator John McCain—Bush’s fading warrior and anointed, temperamental replacement—who like Vice President Cheney, cannot seem to get his facts straight, predict more of the same for a weary American public, now more concerned about an ailing American economy.

On this fifth anniversary of the war in Iraq, will we remain loyal to the past, traveling down the same road in the wrong direction with another Bush or Clinton clone, or will we turn the page with fresh, new leadership? With the nation in a mess, the media forced to cover the current president still in denial and lying to the American public, the American public itself confused and in a quandary, and the next president, who tells us the truth, cut off, the choice is clear and simple. Meanwhile, God bless our troops, God bless America, and thank God the People have the power to turn the page soon as the world looks on with approval.

John   March 19th, 2008 5:25 pm ET

Yet isn't his rating higher than the Democratically-controlled Congress?

Percy   March 19th, 2008 5:25 pm ET

Worthless president. Just like our dollar. Thanks.

vl   March 19th, 2008 5:23 pm ET

Gee, I'm surprised it's even that high.

Thomas   March 19th, 2008 5:23 pm ET

Bush started at what 67% or more? If Obama gets in the White House Obama's rating will start at mid 40s, when people find out that Obama is WAY worse the Bush he should end if short 4 years in the low teens.

anita   March 19th, 2008 5:22 pm ET

President Bush has often said history will judge his legacy more fairly than current critcs. I'm not counting on living long enough to see that
happen.

Sarah L, Fayetteville, AR   March 19th, 2008 5:22 pm ET

Bush will go down in history as the worst U.S. president of all time. Obama offers a stark contrast to the failure of Bush, yet some are willing to toss him aside because of his ex-Pastor. McCain has alligned himself with Bush and will offer nothing but the same failed policies.

I hope the voters will look at today, the 5th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, and make their decision based on what really matters to the people of this country–not someone's religious affiliation.

Tim j   March 19th, 2008 5:22 pm ET

What is the most amazing thing is 31% of the country actually thinks he is doing a good job. Well then again considering the amount of people who believed that saddam was behind 9/11 when we were going into Iraq its not too surprising….

NickNasc   March 19th, 2008 5:22 pm ET

Did they REALLY have to take a POLL to figure this out?

Travis, Spokane, WA   March 19th, 2008 5:22 pm ET

And congress' approval rating is 11. Write a story about that

JR   March 19th, 2008 5:21 pm ET

thats 31% too much

Republicrat   March 19th, 2008 5:20 pm ET

I would like to know who the 31% of people are who do actually approve of his performance.

Veterans for Obama   March 19th, 2008 5:19 pm ET

Who are these 31%. Are they polling mental health clinics as well?

simple thought ?   March 19th, 2008 5:19 pm ET

this can't be right?
you must mean that just 31 people approve of him,… right?

even his base don't like him….

how is this # possible?

bowling green,mo.

Lorenz, Queens, NY   March 19th, 2008 5:19 pm ET

Take a poll only in the North East and the rating will go down into single digits.

Veterans for Obama   March 19th, 2008 5:18 pm ET

Can't wait to get Obama in the White House.

skh4450IL   March 19th, 2008 5:18 pm ET

Ya think?

Ben   March 19th, 2008 5:18 pm ET

Duh.

Chris, Springfield MO   March 19th, 2008 5:17 pm ET
