A video circulated by a McCain staffer questioned Obama's patriotism and included footage of Wright.
A video circulated by a McCain staffer questioned Obama's patriotism and included footage of Wright.

(CNN) - The McCain campaign suspended a staff member Thursday afternoon for distributing a YouTube video that questions Barack Obama's patriotism and includes footage from the Rev. Jeremiah Wright's controversial sermons.

“We have been very clear on the type of campaign we intend to run and this staffer acted in violation of our policy. He has been reprimanded by campaign leadership and suspended from the campaign,” McCain campaign spokeswoman Jill Hazelbaker said.

The suspended staffer, Soren Dayton, works in the campaign's political department and distributed the YouTube video via the internet application Twitter earlier Thursday.

A campaign aide insists Soren Dayton was a low level staffer and who had “no role in the communications shop.”

McCain insists repeatedly that he will not engage in personal attacks on Democrats, and CNN was told last week that campaign aides are working on an op-ed to be published in the senator's name warning his surrogates and supporters not to do so.

well McCain you have won my support if obama loses you are doing what should have been done from the very beginning just the issue need to be brought up not the personal stuff I really don't care what religion he is or what his preacher says, I am only interested in the issue, like where are the jobs, why is gas so high and why has food gone up that's all. Clinton's are a whole nother story we go from Bush to Bush again, and now we go from Clinton to Clinton again I don;t think so.

pat   March 20th, 2008 8:38 pm ET

I think McCain needs to stand before the American public and put this whole race issue to rest. As long as the media continue to discuss Jeremiah Wright , the focus of the issues are being lost. This is not helping the country, it's stirring up old wombs. There has been very little mention that his staff was responsible for bringing race to the forefont.

Andrew K.   March 20th, 2008 6:38 pm ET

From an Obama fan, thank you Mr. McCain. We need civility and decency in public office.

Медведев   March 20th, 2008 6:30 pm ET

Soren should be fired, and all those conspiring with. If McCain has any dignity he should do this, and not lower himself to Clintonesque standards.

A Democrat   March 20th, 2008 6:29 pm ET

While I do not agree with this man on much, he is very admirable. Such a stance on personal attacks is something all of us should try to reach.

g4hillary   March 20th, 2008 6:25 pm ET

poor obama. everyone is picking on him. If its true, why not show it. obama seemed to take great pride in his support of wright, so i say let the video play!!!!!!

Bill   March 20th, 2008 6:25 pm ET

It would be interesting to know where this originated. It was my understanding that this video was first posted on the web by a McCain staffer. I am sure that I read that somewhere. If it wasn't a McCain staffer, who was it?

scott, tx   March 20th, 2008 6:24 pm ET

Good for you, Senator McCain. And thank you for leading by example.

Trish   March 20th, 2008 6:24 pm ET

I wish Hillary's supporters and staffers had the same standards. Of course, the conservative pundits will not look kindly on this move by McCain.

roger   March 20th, 2008 6:22 pm ET

If McCain thinks that he can run a pure run for president not critizing his or her opponent h is CRAZY. we know that the clintons lie and obama lied by saying he never heard wright spew those sermons then said he did. mccain this is not the 1930s it's not a gentlemans game it's winner take all

ken   March 20th, 2008 6:19 pm ET

this is the type of racist material we're going to see from McCain and his right wing friends this election. Divide and conquer is going to be their theme.

I don't agree with Senator McCain's stance on the Iraq war but he is a decent human being. Senator Obama is a decent human being. Hillary has no moral 'line in the sand' that she won't cross. She will do or say anything to garner a few more votes.

Hopefully the Republicans can help to stop it on the Democratic Side!!
Thanks from an Obama Supporter

Erik, Austin TX   March 20th, 2008 5:57 pm ET

McCain doesn't need to run a negative campaign, there are plenty of Republican groups that will be glad to Swift Boat the other candidates on his behalf. All he has to do is sit back and say "not my fault, I have no control over them" and he can have his opponents smeared and still keep his own nose clean.

HAM   March 20th, 2008 5:56 pm ET

Way to go John... you don't need to throw mud at these two... they will do enough of that to each other!

Matelda   March 20th, 2008 5:55 pm ET

Ms Ferraro, I think you should not express dismay but admiration for one of the best and most eloquent speeches of our time.
Considering the fact that you seem to feel at ease with the wealth brought by your racketeering husband you should be the last person in the world to criticize someone with the moral ethics of Senator Obama.

Harold   March 20th, 2008 5:54 pm ET

Many people are questioned Obamas patriotism. This will not stop.

I can honestly say... If Obama does not get the nomination, I feel very comfortable in voting for McCain. Here's a man that may not have all of the answers, but has amazing Integrity. His actions over the last few months have spoken louder than Hillary's rhetoric. Just the little stuff like this.. What a great person.

I guess it's good that McCain has taken this action, but it's kind of shutting the barn door after the horse is gone...

raj   March 20th, 2008 5:46 pm ET

Mccain is a real nice person . But he is either too forgetfull or plain ignorant. He says Iran is training Alqaida terrorists . Apparently he knows nothing about the 1000 years of hatred between the sunnis and shias . How many more ignorant presidents can we have in this country ? . The plus point for Mccain is that he is not as ignorant as the current president !

veronica   March 20th, 2008 5:45 pm ET

i tip my hat to you senator mccain. you are a good man, and an honorable american – but you are too similar to bush and a bit old-fashioned.

Good for McCain! I probably won't vote for a republican anytime soon because of their policys, but its nice to see one with integrity. It will be nice to see a race between Obama and McCain –it might actually focus on the issues.

Melissa R, Louisiana   March 20th, 2008 5:36 pm ET

I applaud Senator McCain for doing what he has done. I believe this campaign should be about the issues facing this country not about what their supporters say.

He also knows that anyone who questions Senator Obama's patriotism will have it come back to bite them. Americans are not stupid they will see through all the right wing spin rhetoric.

Good for Senator McCain. I believe him when he says his campaign won't use the race card to win the race against Obama.

When Obama wins the Democratic nomination, the debates between these two honorable men will be informative.

Hal   March 20th, 2008 5:33 pm ET

Good for John McCain a man of integrity and character VERY presidential. It is good to see that some of the candidates are really trying to change the nature of politics in the US. I hope Hillary and Barack will take note!!

benji   March 20th, 2008 5:32 pm ET

McCain doesn't stand a chance against Hillary or Obama.

Kim   March 20th, 2008 5:31 pm ET

This is why I respect McCain. He will run on his own merits and not throw mud and personal attacks towards a canidate that has no control over what another person says. I also know that the Clinton campaign are the ones who gave the tapes of Rev. Wright to ABC news and told them to "have at it". Hillary Clinton is the last person we need in the White House. Hasn't there been enough blood shed and economic woes, because of this war? Hillary is waging another war against a member of her own party, which proves she is not a uniter and will destroy anyone who gets in her way. She scares the hell out of me.

Key   March 20th, 2008 5:30 pm ET

The Publicans are saving Obama.

Gerry   March 20th, 2008 5:29 pm ET

Good for McCain. Could he give Clinton a call and offer to give her the same op-ed?

Wouldn't it be nice to see an election between Obama and MCCain on issues-not personal attacks?

Tomas   March 20th, 2008 5:21 pm ET

Regardless of who gets fired over this, the damage was already done. It is always annoying when politicians try to clean up the mess afterwards. All these candidates use this tactic as if it makes a difference. McCain might as well claim the mishap because at the end of the day, he benefited from this.

L.G   March 20th, 2008 5:20 pm ET

Senator McCain is really a great man. He understands and appreciates what Obama brings in modern politic time. God Bless you McCain! Gob Bless you Obama! God Bless America!

Obama has my vote but I must say that the action taken by McCain is impressive.
McCain is a stand up guy and an American Hero.

P. Martin   March 20th, 2008 5:17 pm ET

. . . .Many people with un-American ideas hide behind the cloak of patriotism. I don't think that Senator Obama represents his pastor
any more than McCain or Clinton .

Angela   March 20th, 2008 5:12 pm ET

Thank you, Senator McCain, for suspending your staff person. . Wouldn't it be a novel idea and somewhat of a change to have a civilized general election campaign between Senator Obama and Senator McCain on issues rather than pastor endorsements, perceived character flaws and all that other junk? I can still HOPE!

JMA   March 20th, 2008 5:11 pm ET

Now if only this message could be relayed to Clinton and Obama's supporters to stop with the personal attacks. John McCain doesn't need to attack the Democrats b/c they already do it enough themselves. The Dems always find a way to ruin their ability to win an election.

Jane   March 20th, 2008 5:10 pm ET

Good job Mccain. I like the action you took. I will vote for you because of this action you guys took to suspended the person who was distributing video that questions Barack Obama's patriotism and includes footage from the Rev.
Thanks

Louis   March 20th, 2008 5:10 pm ET

BUT....the video is still posted. The staffer is still with the campaign, suspended is not fired. and the story is out.

Robert   March 20th, 2008 5:10 pm ET

I think it's a fair question as to why Obama stayed with that church and it's minister. Last week, he claimed he wasn't present when some of the more difficult sermons happened but that was a lie OR he just doesn't go to church much. It's obvious that Obama agrees with what the reverand was preaching; his wife said that she has been ashamed of our country her whole life.

Ken, Austin TX   March 20th, 2008 5:09 pm ET

This is why I would vote for McCain instead of Hillary in a McCain-Clinton matchup.

Annette TX   March 20th, 2008 5:09 pm ET

I agree with John McCain – Let's not fight dirty like the Clinton does. Lets focus on the issues and facts. The more the democrate fight, the more they will lose and divide the party, it will come to a point that if Obama loses, they will all vote for McCain and if Billary lose;s they will all vote for McCain... No matter what McCain has a free ride and we will have this war go on for 100 yrs....

Kate   March 20th, 2008 5:09 pm ET

He should be congratulated for doing what reporters should have done in the beginning. If the American people knew about this, he would not be where he is today. What a mockery.

CMH   March 20th, 2008 5:08 pm ET

Truth   March 20th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

Repbulican now jump out to say "We love Hillary and hate Obama", "so please vote for H and not for O".

Then, Democrats begin to "hate Hillary and love Obama".

It is too obvious that the Republican are worrying about the bad effect of Wright` words on Obama and began play some games.

Clinton is a fraud   March 20th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

This why I will vote for McCain if the nomation is stolen from Obama. Other than that, Obama is still and will remain my number One choice.

Rob   March 20th, 2008 5:06 pm ET

Good for McCain! But I bet he can't and won't stop these personal attacks. This is what some sick people think is appropriate while electing someone to be President of the United Sates. The last thing they want is a grown-up and intelligent debate on the issues, which is why the right wing didn't want him in the first place.. But good luck, Senator! If you can rein them in you have a chance of winning in November.

Ticket of Hope: OBAMA Al Gore   March 20th, 2008 5:06 pm ET

Good gesture McCain. But we not only look at how you run your campaigne but mostly what is your plan for America. Openly your plan is to continue the failed policy of G.W. Bush that most Americans reject.... simply look at his recent approval rate and adjust before it is late.

I have said that I can not vote for Hillary in the general election if she somehow gets the nomination. I don't agree with anything McCain stands for but because of the way he's taken the high road and shown integrity on this Wright flap, I can stomach him as president. Hillary, on the other hand, not so much!

Mark   March 20th, 2008 5:04 pm ET

This is a very common trick in proxy war: send a lackey in to do the dirty work, and then decry said lackey in order to keep your own hands clean, i.e. Hillary Clinton and Geraldine Ferraro.

I do not believe for even an instant that McCain did not know about this before. At the very best, his campaign manager orchestrated this and did not tell him. At worst, he gave the order himself.

Welcome again to the 1950s and the McCarthy Era.

Disgusting.

I was counting the days before this would happen. I was off by only one day.

Ken   March 20th, 2008 5:02 pm ET

Well, here's the quick answer to the Clinton campaign, which seems perfectly willing to let the racism issue fester so long as it helps Hillary.

There is absolutely no way that I would ever vote for Hillary now should she successfully steal the nomination from Obama–she clearly will do, or not do, anything to get the nomination.

Matthew Jade   March 20th, 2008 5:02 pm ET

I love the route McCain has taken in regards to his supporters attacking Obama and Clinton. No sucker punches, no exceptions. Obviously he wants to project himself as a wise gentleman, a healer and a man worthy of respect. As of this point he has been very successful. As a Obama supporter I find this refreshing and admirable. I hope once the general election begins between Obama and McCain it will follow a similar tone of mutual respect between them.

I know many of my fellow liberals feel that the Republicans will sink to any depths to win the general election, but at this point it seems as though McCain will be a worthy and respectful opponent for Sen. Obama, should he win. If only we could say that for his current opponent.

Herman   March 20th, 2008 5:00 pm ET

Good enough on this already. It’s time to get back to the real issues that is hurting this country. Jobs, economy, war, our in structure and what and how the international community is looking at America.

Good Job John......I'm supporting Obama, but if Hillary is the nominee you will be the man I vote for.

Jay   March 20th, 2008 4:43 pm ET

Truth Hurts!

mariann   March 20th, 2008 4:42 pm ET

thank you John McCain, at least someone has standards...

Randy - Denver   March 20th, 2008 4:42 pm ET

Ande the integrity of this man shows why if Not Mr. Obama than Mr. McCain. Ms. Clinton could learn a few things from these true American Heros.

Jennifer   March 20th, 2008 4:41 pm ET

I am an Obama supporter, but if Hillary steals the nomination, I am voting for McCain. McCain is a man of real integrity.

karla stuck   March 20th, 2008 4:40 pm ET

What in the world is obama thinking when he exposes his CHILDREN to the kind of racism that his church preaches Children learn what they live!!!!!

Keeping It Real   March 20th, 2008 4:39 pm ET

WOW! Even McCain is running a campaign better than Hillary!!! HATS OFF TO THE MCCAIN CAMP!

Lawrence   March 20th, 2008 4:39 pm ET

To bad they did not can the staffer for campaigning like this.

Daniel   March 20th, 2008 4:39 pm ET

Good for McCain. I think he's a nice a man. I hope we won't run a throwing sink campaign.

Mauricio Galvao Anderson   March 20th, 2008 4:39 pm ET

So McHate shows his face.... And we are to see a lot of this until election day. But we all know that his next job is farming in Arizona.

Frustrated   March 20th, 2008 4:38 pm ET

I'm very impressed by John McCain...he may not be so bad afterall, starting to look a lil different than Bush

dani   March 20th, 2008 4:37 pm ET

what ever happened to free speech. Oh, I know, we have to walk on eggshells with Barack..he might pull the race card again.

Murf   March 20th, 2008 4:36 pm ET

I may disagree with Sen. McCain on his position on the Iraq war, but no one can question the man's integrity.

Bud Curtis   March 20th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

I say this, not as a McCain supporter, although I will vote for him if Clinton is not the Democrat nominee.

McCain is taking the high road on this and other issues, probably because he is earnestly against perceived "dirty politics". However, I do not understand how one candidate runs opposed to another without being able to talk about the opponent without crossing some invisible line.

I think voters, on both sides of the aisle, have become too thin-skinned. No one should take this kind of stuff so personally. It is called a political campaign. Support whoever you will, but stop being so sensitive. It takes a lot of the fun and interest out of politics.

Bud
Miami, OK

sascha   March 20th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

Good decision, Mr. Mc Cain!

Kathie   March 20th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

All you Obamaites were so quick to point the finger at the Clinton
campaign . Your so steeped in your opinions that everything negative that comes out about your saviour Obama comes from Clinton advisors you forget he has other competition out there.

Greg   March 20th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

I won't be voting for him, for policy reasons, but I certainly respect his integrity. John gets it, Barack gets it, why can't everybody else get it? Many of us are sick of the dirty tactics that degrade our democratic system, and a politician who behaves with dignity has a much better chance of getting our vote. The days of dirty tricks are over.

LeftCoast Tim   March 20th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

The aged John McSame is a shell of his former self. Can he control the RNC and it's various 527 sub groups. I'd be doubting that. Let's see what happens when Rove takes over.

Red   March 20th, 2008 4:30 pm ET

Thank you, Senator McCain. I may not be supporting you, but I do respect you, and the fact that you are trying to run as clean a campaign as possible. I hope that you continue to do so.

Connie   March 20th, 2008 4:30 pm ET

I would think Senator Mcain would not engage in this type of dirty politics, first of all, it has no place in the campaign, but when you have Carl Rove working for you, what can you expect. Now lets see what the media will do with this. I bet there will be no crucifition on this bit of news, the only candidate the media wants to crucify is Senator Barack Obama, because he does not fit the mold.

Freida NYC   March 20th, 2008 4:30 pm ET

Wow! Mc. Cain is a true gentleman, a genuine American, and a leader. His actions speak volume... I am very impressed! I am a democrat, but comes November I will vote for Mc. Cain if Hillary does not get the democratic nom.

NO OBAMA UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!!!!

HILLARY OR MC. CAIN.

Mark, Washington, MD   March 20th, 2008 4:29 pm ET

There are only two genuine candidates in this presidential campaign: Barack Obama and John McCain. McCain's response is the very opposite of Hillary Clinton. Hillary is using the Wright situation to win super delegates, while MCCain is calling for sober and focused campaign on the issues. I would love to see a contest between Obama and MCain. I like Obama, though. The Democrats have sound policies that should enable either of them to win over McCain. I like McCain, but his embrace of Bush and the war is frightening. But I would consider voting for him if Hillary is the Democratic nominee. Dynastic family rule is a greater threat to this Republic than a McCain presidency.

Pamela Dodson   March 20th, 2008 4:29 pm ET

I have to wholeheartedly agree with Senator McCain and I also commend him for being the ADULT in squashing this type of behavior out of his campaign. Staying focused on the REAL ISSUES and not being so absorbed into what someone said or didn't say. The Dems are going to self-destruct themselves with nonsense and foolishness.

MC, Texas   March 20th, 2008 4:29 pm ET

Why? This person only exposed the truth.

Rj   March 20th, 2008 4:29 pm ET

Thank god ,
Someone has so out there knows enough is enough. Maybe the Media and Hillary Camp can take this as an ex sample . Barack Obama already did everything he could to stop this cloud over his head.

After all there is many many thing in this world to think about than this tape . That being shown over and over and over again.

How long are they going to talk about this . ??? how long .

R. Glover   March 20th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

WOW..... BOUT TIME SOMEONE GETS OFF THE RACE ISSUE.... TO BAD IT HAD TO BE THE REPUBLICAN PARY TO MAKE THE FIRST MOVE..

kay   March 20th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

This actually make Hillary looks really bad!!!!

kwFEDUPVOTER   March 20th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

This is a disgrace, you people would do anything to get in the white house. It's out there now. I will never believe he didn't know about this.

You people have raked this man over the coals for someone elses views, just so you can get to the white house.

Shame on "All of You", the Clinton's are no better.

Truth seeker   March 20th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

This was a smooth move by Mccain, it's very respectful. At least he recognizes how childish it is to play the race card. Hillary should be taking notes from Mccain. This will carry a long way with Mccain.
However, now that Hillary's grand scheme to pull off Florida and Michigan have failed, it looks like it's going to be between Obama and Mccain – finally!

scott from ny   March 20th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

Wright should be off the news because it is old and these clipps are over 30 yrs-come on give it a break. Glad she was fired!!

Phil, Washington, DC   March 20th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

You see someone has some sense. Another example of John McCain's outstanding leadership. I am an African American Democrat. If Hillary is our (Democratic) nominee, then MY vote in November goes to John McCain. The issues are more important, the direction we go is even greater.

Kevin   March 20th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

Thanks McCain for being a sensible American. You have my vote for this.

Winston   March 20th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

I am a Democrat Leaning Independent and McCain is making it very hard for me not to like or vote for him. I must admit the guy got character and intergrity.

Note to Superdelegates   March 20th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

I am a Democrat who supports Obama. He is leading in the delegate count so he should win the nomination. But if Hillary happens to take the delegate lead and becomes the Democrtic nominee, then I will cast my support for her for the sake of the party versus McCain.

But, if she doesn't lead in delegates and somehow you as Superdelegates crown her the nominee I will strongly express my lack of support for the Democratic party and Hillary as well. Please take note.

BEST POLITICAL TEAM ON TELEVISION??? I HAVE YET TO SEE THAT!   March 20th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

Superdelegates, YOU HEAR THAT??

The weakening of Hillary's, Davis', and the best POLITICAL TEAM ON TELEVISION'S argument that Pastor Wright will hamper Obama's win in November!!

Vote for the candidate that you choose, not because some conniving, manipulative, and tactical woman and her surrogates (that includes you CNN) wants to milk an unfortunate situation for their own benefits.

George Alberts   March 20th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

Pardon me for saying "big deal.' The surrogates for John McCain will keep this video alive until Election Day, with his tacit approval. Talk about a "win-win" for "straight talk."

Vanguard   March 20th, 2008 4:24 pm ET

And that is why I respect the man. It IS possible to tell your surrogates to shut up.

Love2 Hillary/Obama   March 20th, 2008 4:24 pm ET

John McCain suspended a staff because he thought Obama maybe easy to win in general election that's why he want Obama to win a nomination.

John I think you have lost your mind Hillary and Obama not that easy ok....you will see both of Obama and Hillary in general election.

Maurice   March 20th, 2008 4:24 pm ET

This is why...even though I support Obama....

I respect John McCain. He has more integrity than most. That means a lot to me. I would seriously consider voting for him if he wasn't so staunchly pro war.

jason   March 20th, 2008 4:24 pm ET

i big laugh at all the hillary supporters that were duped by a republican.

get used to it...

mary   March 20th, 2008 4:24 pm ET

good call....

Very Concerned American   March 20th, 2008 4:24 pm ET

This is just a sampling of how the Republicans will disrupt Obama. Obama will not be able to take this and the Repulicans will win.

Marguerite Nash   March 20th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

Thank you Senator McCain for your integrity. It is refreshing.

Ernest Caldwell   March 20th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

Really commendable. I'm speachless

Obama 08

Velma Williamson   March 20th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

What is the matter here, are people not suppose to know about the person they are voting for, should there be anything kept secret about anybody trying to become president of the most important country in the world? Is this legal?

Obama Supporter   March 20th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

It's ashame that someone would stoop so low to hurt someone out of fear of being defearted.

Daniel   March 20th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

I think the Clinton campaign can learn a thing or two from Senator McCain. This is the kind of politics Obama is pushing for. If the Superdelegates give this nomination to Clinton, then I'm all yours Mr. McCain. Thank you for sticking to the issues.

Jeff   March 20th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

Ahhh, the McCain vs. Obama campaign is going to be such a refreshing change. I look forward to two a much more adult campaign after the ridiculousness of the Clinton desperation machine. Maybe we can even focus on issues...the REAL issues (not abortion, gay marriage, fantasy welfare programs for the healthcare industry , etc.)

sara   March 20th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

This solidifies my resolution to vote ABC (Anyone But Clinton) this election cycle!

Brian in Tampa   March 20th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

Wow! A politician standing by his words! Too bad Hillary can't!!!

Amy Isaacs   March 20th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

The headline says "Clinton backer" but the article is about a McCain staffer. Please correct, they really don't look alike.

Ethel   March 20th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

This my third attempt to voice my opinion. The first two were 'too fast' and the second 'duplicate'. What is going one. Cafferty only accepts answers to his questions only if it suits him. Time to switch to Fox News.

Kathy   March 20th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

I salute you John McCain. I believe that in order for us to have a civil presidential race it will have to be between Obama and McCain. The Clintons are not above doing whatever it takes to win. I would not be suprised if they did not put out the original video.

Gary B   March 20th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

Thank you the McCain Campaign

Rodney Dallas TX   March 20th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

Why suspend them? Give them a freakin medal. They just proved that Obama is just as phoney as the rest of the politicians.

Alex H   March 20th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

And this is why Lanny Davis is horribly wrong. The problem is that only Clinton is willing to keep pushing the issue while McCain IS the one who will take the high road. Clinton is doing McCain's job for him! McCain has sent out talking points to his surrogates and staff making sure they don't talk about these things. He's made it very clear that he won't stoop this the level Clinton has.

Dee   March 20th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Compare this to Lanny Davis' nonsense. This is why I'll vote for McCain, if the Democrats are foolish enough to let Clinton steal the nomination from Obama.

Bill, Streamwood, IL   March 20th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Senator McCain and his senior campaign staff appear to be showing a lot more integrity than Senator Clinton and her "surrogates."

I hope this continues and then we can all put the final nail in the coffin of the Karl-Rove-school-of-election-campaigning.

ranga   March 20th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Wow !!! What a wonderful gesture from John McCain. In a developed democracy, election campaigns must always focus on issues, not mudslinging.

GoodForMCcain   March 20th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

I admire Mccain for not listening to talk shows with low IQ and racist attitude their main aim is to exploit the race issue america has been facing for so many years to their advantage. Good job Mccain say no to this people if you want the vote from the majority of the american people. Throw people like Hannity, Bill O'rilley under you bus.

David Dobbyn   March 20th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

I support McCain. So, as a supporter I am not allowed to bash the Democrats? What's he gonna do, not accept my vote? Hmm, I bet Ralph Nader will gladly take it.

Eli   March 20th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

Whats Mccain doing waiting until Obama gets the nomination and then he will start asking questions. You can not tell me that McCain will not bring this up in the fall if Obama has the nomination.

Jean   March 20th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

That is ludicrous to suspend a staff member when we already have free access to Obama's hate-filled preacher's sermons.

Maria   March 20th, 2008 4:15 pm ET

Good job McCain. If you don't stand for something, we, the American people will continue to fall for anything. By keeping this sort of nonsense in constant rotation. stops us from focusing on reality because of hate.

Andrew B   March 20th, 2008 4:15 pm ET

Good for McCain. I might actually vote for him if Hillary becomes the Dem nominee. Too bad he won't be able to expect the same courtesy from her – look at the smear campaign she ran against Obama.

Neva Stoltz   March 20th, 2008 4:14 pm ET

The comment on the front page stated that Clinton backer goes after Obama's minister, however, upon reading the article it stated a McCain staffer had posted a video on the internet. Do you people hate Clinton so much that she takes the blame for everything?

Richard   March 20th, 2008 4:14 pm ET

There has been a lot of talk about the NY Gov disgracing the Governs mansion, but no has mention what Bill Clintion has done to the white house. The Clintons should have crawled away to hide. Bill Clinton disgraced the white house and every president that sat in that seat. Hillary go away.

KF   March 20th, 2008 4:13 pm ET

Kudos to you John McCain.

david   March 20th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

even although i dont support John Mc Cain.....I have to say for him that admire him very much for being respectfull for his opponets....

gene   March 20th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

The Latest News section on the CNN index page reads:
Ticker: Clinton backer goes after Obama pastor

it should say McCain backer instead of Clinton backer.

Corrected:
Ticker: McCain backer goes after Obama pastor

Proud white woman of 63 for obamaman   March 20th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

The Mr. Mc Nice side of Him. I have seen the other side.

For Hill   March 20th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

Did you learn anything, Hill?

Ivory Tickler   March 20th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

Wow. A politician not wanting to engage is smear politics. How refreshing. Let's hope Hillary follows suit (gag).

Obama is the right man at this critical time. Though major kudos to Sen. McCain.

Obama 08'

Bouba NY   March 20th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

This is what we need.....the focuss should be on issues on personal attacks

Richard from Los Angeles   March 20th, 2008 4:10 pm ET

McCain is one Republican that I will vote for if Obama is unfairly downed by race fears or dishonest smears.

I really admire his stance and clear view of fairness.

Kar   March 20th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

He's saving it for the general election.

NO2U   March 20th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

McCain is an honerable man and I expect to see a fair election in Nov.

McCain vs Obama the ultimate battle! hah!

Niah Waters   March 20th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

Way to go McCain, you may have my vote in November!

The truth shall set you free!   March 20th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

America is finally waking up.

Leigh   March 20th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

Notice how fast McCain responded, it took Hillary how long to address racial remarks made by her supporters? McCain has impressed me by how fast he responded to this and how he stood up for Obama with the Wright statements.

Anti-Establishment   March 20th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

Exactly why McCain will get my vote over Clinton in the fall.

carrie,detroit   March 20th, 2008 4:07 pm ET

seems that mccain is a man of principle and integrity.better him than clit-on.

wanakee   March 20th, 2008 4:07 pm ET

It's good of McCain to take the high road, which is far better than what you get from Senator Clinton!

john from oregon   March 20th, 2008 4:06 pm ET

Now the truth finally comes out. This is 100% political. Obama will actually come out ahead of this in the long run.

To Dennis   March 20th, 2008 4:06 pm ET

Thank you John McCain. I cannot wait to hear a discussion about the ISSUES between yourself and Obama

SH   March 20th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

I am an Obama supporter and this is very refreshing to me. Wouldn't it be great to have a contest where the issues are front and center, rather than personal attacks? I'm looking forward to it!

Obama '08!!

Rosalynd   March 20th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

This is a good sign from the McCain camp! I am an Obama supporter and I look forward to a general election campaign from Obama and McCain where the discourse from the candidates is on the issues and where surrogates are quickly dismissed for foolishness. Maybe the Media will stick with the issues to( I can only hope!).

Uba   March 20th, 2008 4:04 pm ET

Way to go John McCain. You are definitely better than Rush Limbaugh and the rest of those clowns.

chris   March 20th, 2008 4:04 pm ET

Smart staffer... he knows McCain vs Clinton is a much easier battle to win against.

Beyond her failed healthcare experience – Clinton has nothing

Liza   March 20th, 2008 4:04 pm ET

And this is exactly why I can respect Sen. McCain far more than I can Sen. Clinton. There are rules of conduct that at least McCain and Obama have maintained even being at odds as a Republican and a Democrat.

And don't get e wrong. I am a woman who would love to see a woman as president. Just not Hillary Clinton. She will never be the representative choice for my voice as President or anything else.

Betty   March 20th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

Good for McCain! Integrity among politicians is so refreshing.

D.W.; Miami, FL   March 20th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

WOW. McCain is not messing around. He must be really serious about this no mudslinging campaign. Considering what happened to him when he was running against Bush I suppose that is to be expected.

If Obama wins I forsee I general election argued on the issues. But if Clinton wins the Dem nom, I hope McCain is not too squemish to throw a punch or Hillary will beat him black and blue like she is trying to do Obama.

David   March 20th, 2008 4:01 pm ET

Oh my god!
So McCain is far better than Hillary...
Goodbye democratic party

Miles   March 20th, 2008 4:01 pm ET

Suspended? How about firing him?

Thall999   March 20th, 2008 4:01 pm ET

I give McCain lots of credit in that after seeing what occured to him by GW Bush Jr in 2004, he still tries to stay above the sewage politics.

I disagree with his Iraq position but I must admit he has some integrity!

Great Job McCain, you're showing leadership!

Love the USA   March 20th, 2008 4:01 pm ET

She should have been praised, not fired . We need to know the truth, and if it hurts, well that is to bad.

It was said, it happen, and many of us were fooled by Obama, thanks to this video, we now have our eyes wide open.

We need more people like your staff memeber, who had the guts to put the truth out there.

Funny   March 20th, 2008 4:01 pm ET

Any time Americans are more afraid of a pastor, than they are crooked politicians and the Bush made-up- war, you know things are bad.

We've got bigger problems than the retired Reverend Wright.

Obama 08

David, Texas   March 20th, 2008 4:01 pm ET

I am sure that somehow the Obama supporters will blame HRC for this anyway.

Ian   March 20th, 2008 4:00 pm ET

Good for you Mr. McCain. After you were a victim of Bush's dirty tactics in the 2000 Republican primary, it makes me proud to see you taking the high road. Many would be tempted to sink to the same level.

What's particularly commendable is that you released this person from your campaign BEFORE the news media got a hold of it, which tells me you did it for the right reasons.

nobama texan   March 20th, 2008 3:59 pm ET

At least McCain has a modicum of self respect.Ferraro is gone,so ditto for Clinton.I guess self respect and nonracist surrogates are unheard of for the Obamites.Insanity must be more prevalent than I thought for ANYONE other than AA's to vote for this shyster.Rezco!!!

JM, OH   March 20th, 2008 3:59 pm ET

Sounds like typical politics to me. Get one of your staffers to be the sacrificial lamb to get out the negative message, then "suspend" him to make it look like you're taking the high ground. We've seen this tactic a hundred times from all the candidates. Nice try, though.

Dave from SC   March 20th, 2008 3:59 pm ET

Enough is enough. We have a country falling apart piece by piece; and all we can think about is what some old preacher said that will not change or improve our lives. What about that 30 billion dollar give away that our President did over the weekend? What about the pocket crunch that ALL Americans are suffering from. We have REAL issues that need our attention!

Russell NC   March 20th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

He'll refrain until after a democrat is nominated!!!

Thanks Barack   March 20th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

Thank you Barack for making the country and the world aware that we have good leaders, and we can do better.

Like I said, his speech was brilliant, and he will win. Why, because the other camps are filled with morons who think they know more than the American people. It won't work.

Obama 08

Samantha Klein   March 20th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

McCain keeps "letting this happen" and then firing the perpetrators. I can't believe everybody in McCain's campaign does everything he doesn't want. This is just not credible.

McCain road to the White House isn't as high as he pretends it to be. He's stooping pretty low too. Naughty, Naughy boy, like Senator Craig said.

Teresa   March 20th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

That is so unfair of the McCain staff aides to do such a thing. I under stand politics but to ruin an american citizen whom life has been spent trying to help those of community is just absurd.

Slap Stick, Florida   March 20th, 2008 3:56 pm ET

Good for him. Unlike Clinton who wants to win the Dem nomination at any cost. The one thing remains evident is that she cannot win with just the Hispanic vote. Hmmmmm I would never vote for her.

The Bunny's Hoppin'   March 20th, 2008 3:56 pm ET

Obama 08

KEB   March 20th, 2008 3:55 pm ET

Thank you for taking the high road, McCain. I am not a Republican, and I don't believe in your political stance, but I am appreciative of someone finally taking a moment to get these campaigns back on track. Bravo!

Barack All The Way   March 20th, 2008 3:55 pm ET

McCain if you think this is going to make you relevant, think again. You are not, and I don't care if you fire a hundred staffers, Barack still gets my vote.

John, Pittsburgh   March 20th, 2008 3:54 pm ET

Thank you for having integrity and honor senator

Don't Think About Pink Elephants   March 20th, 2008 3:53 pm ET

McBush will have to get up a little earlier to make us believe this one. It's like saying, don't think about pink elephants.

So both camps are afraid to attack Obama on the issues, sad.

Obama 08

Betti, Boston MA   March 20th, 2008 3:53 pm ET

God Bless you John McCain. You have more integrity than HRC supporters.

lisa   March 20th, 2008 3:53 pm ET

why couldn't you fire the person, McCain?

Diva in Philadelphia, PA   March 20th, 2008 3:53 pm ET

As much as I dislike the GOP, I must say that this shows real character on the part of McCain. And once again, Billary is the only true mudslinger in the campaign...

objective   March 20th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

Thank you McCain for not exploiting this video any longer. You do have morals and values that are above your own political career goals. I commend you for that.

Shirley, Silicon Valley, CA   March 20th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

I look forward to watching a clean and statesman-like competion in this highest position in our nation.

Hillary fights too dirty. Teeth, nails, and kitchen sinks tactics are great skills for her personal survival but definitely disqualify her as a country leader.

T M Oak Creek,   March 20th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

Good . Plus Judge Elder on OBAMA, His comments he could keep to himself. He only wants to promote his book. And he tries to out talk the other quests.

Mike on the West coast   March 20th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

I need more than Mr. McCain saying he won't engage in this type of Politics. As a leader he needs to answer on the behalf of the actions of the people he is trying to lead. Suspension seems very light handed.

This is the type of politics that leaves a bad taste in my mouth and has steered me to another party.

Mac in FL   March 20th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

No need to attack now John.... your chance will come later.

sue, NJ   March 20th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

mc cain does not need any fuel to his pastor problems!

i do commend him for trying to run a fair campaign!!

david   March 20th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

Got caught did he? I don't think anyone needs to help trash Obama and Wright. They and CNN have done a good job of it alone.

GO HILLARY GO!!!!!!!!!

Nikki   March 20th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

Wait a second...

Someone took the high road and showed leadership...

What the heck is going on??

John Taylor   March 20th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

Good for John. He's smart enough to stay out of it and let the chips fall where they may. And the chips have fallen hard on Barack Obama, by the way. And rightly so. Can't lay down with the dogs and not expect to wake up with fleas

Independent   March 20th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

Only if Hillary Clinton could show the same character!

Jane   March 20th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

McCain only wants to kill Hillary first by doing this, then gets back to Obama in November.

What a strategie!!

Smoke Screen   March 20th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

I'm shocked, shocked that "gambling" is going on in the casino.

I don't buy it, they simply wanted to circulate the video again.

Obama 08

Uncle Sam   March 20th, 2008 3:50 pm ET

Once again John McCain demonstrates the kind of integrity and leadership that the American people have come to expect from him. By his own admission he is not a flawless candidate, but he consistently does the right thing when it would be easier not to. And it is that moral courage, I believe, that Americans are looking for in their next president.

bernice   March 20th, 2008 3:50 pm ET

Good job McCain, I thought there was a separation between Church and State in the good U. S. of A.

Darth Vadik, CA   March 20th, 2008 3:50 pm ET

Some people just crack me up.

Darrel/from Iowa   March 20th, 2008 3:49 pm ET

God Bless- John McCain
Keep on the High Ground
The democrats are intrenched in a dirty battle down some slippery slope and You don't want any part of it.
While watching the clinton machine, one understands the the people that don't stup into mud slinging are the ones that will be the leaders best suited for the USA. I am hoping for a better President for AMERICA the next time around/ Tired of the same o same o!

Praetorian, Fort Myers   March 20th, 2008 3:49 pm ET

I agree with McCain...
Although I definitely believe he should insist on above board tactics. Let the general population generate this type of material–not a staffer.

But nonetheless–I hope the pressure is kept on Obama. His mentor and spiritual advisor is clearly prone to some clearly un-American outbursts–and his relationship with such a ethno-centric religious community is very disturbing.

We need to further evaluate this man's ethics.

Tosha-Atlanta, GA   March 20th, 2008 3:49 pm ET

I am beginning to admire McCain's devotion to sticking to the issues. If Clinton gets the democratic nomination I may very well be persuaded to vote McCain in the general election. Hillary should take a page out of Obama/McCain book.

Darth Vadik, CA   March 20th, 2008 3:49 pm ET

..............BOOOOOOO...........

Anonymous   March 20th, 2008 3:49 pm ET

Way to go Mc.
Take the high road.

TheLeftNut   March 20th, 2008 3:49 pm ET

Dirty deeds left to Clinton.

You not so bad after all!!!   March 20th, 2008 3:49 pm ET

That was a very smart move of you. Very smart anyway they have played it over, and over again. I will be given you my vote!!! NOT HILLARY, because she plays too dirty.

Tracy, Chicago, IL   March 20th, 2008 3:48 pm ET

McCain was smart in doing this because he also has some pastor issues that will come to light if the repubs continue to hammer Obama on this

James, Cleveland Ohio   March 20th, 2008 3:47 pm ET

Thank You Sen. McCain, maybe we can have an adult campaign.

anon   March 20th, 2008 3:47 pm ET

The Democrats could learn something from this man...

OMG did I say that out loud?!

Elly   March 20th, 2008 3:47 pm ET

good for John McCain for doing the *honorable* thing
he knows how it feels to be swiftboated by repulsive people out there
who get their jollies from hurting other candidates
I am glad he did this

Elaine in Atlanta   March 20th, 2008 3:46 pm ET

Oh wow, is McCain playing clean politics now.....very intresting

carolyn   March 20th, 2008 3:46 pm ET

Impressive ... and I am a Democrat, but an American first.

BK   March 20th, 2008 3:46 pm ET

It doesn't matter who broke the news its true and the American people needed to know the truth before the rest of the states make a terrible mistake voting for Obama. People are already wanting their vote back. Too bad it didn't come out sooner.

Shavon   March 20th, 2008 3:46 pm ET

So now all you Obama supporters can stop blaming Hillary for this mess!!!!!!!!

Jessica   March 20th, 2008 3:45 pm ET

I'm a registered Democrat, but if Clinton wins the nomination, I'll be voting for McCain.

Brandon   March 20th, 2008 3:45 pm ET

Hillary Clinton campaigns more like a republican than John McCain. Kudos for McCain.

He is starting to look like the maverick we used to love again. I bet he is glad that the Repub primaries are over.

Nice   March 20th, 2008 3:44 pm ET

Somehow this will be a plot between Clinton and McCain to destroy the good name of Obama. Can't wait to see the reaction!

Clinton and Obama supporters: Can we now see who we are fighting against?

Val   March 20th, 2008 3:44 pm ET

McCain's people need to see if they can go and train Hillary's people on how to take the HIGH ROAD.

Obama/08

Pepou   March 20th, 2008 3:43 pm ET

Thank you Mr. McCain. These types of attacks are shameful and you are right to intervene.

red white and BLUE   March 20th, 2008 3:43 pm ET

John McCain is actually acting more like a grown-up then Hillary Clinton.

When has Hillary Clinton said "if you are racist, I don't want your vote."?

atimebandit   March 20th, 2008 3:43 pm ET

McCain once again shows that he, and his campaign, takes pride in running a positive and respectful campaign.

Tony Z- MD   March 20th, 2008 3:43 pm ET

This action has to be applauded. He is is impressing the voters.

This is one of the reasone I will vote for him if Obama is not the Democratic nominee.

Hattie / Chicago   March 20th, 2008 3:43 pm ET

Good for you McCain.. Maybe you're not so insane after all !!

dAnnE   March 20th, 2008 3:43 pm ET

Wow, I have a new found respect for McCain. We all have different beliefs on how to achieve a common goal...but we still need to be fair and respectful and McCain is both.

Greg   March 20th, 2008 3:42 pm ET

I don't think this is very smart of McCain. His only chance of winning in November is to find every possible way to denigrate his opponent. It's a fine line, of course. But it's a risk he must take. Besides, Obama's pastor and all the attendant baggage is relevant - the question is, why should these things NOT be brought to the public's attention?

jenny from Idaho   March 20th, 2008 3:42 pm ET

Thank you McCain, being a jaded democrat, I am very surprised.

ACE, Denver   March 20th, 2008 3:41 pm ET

Thank you, Mr. McCain. I truly respect your integrity (and I'm an Obama supporter).

Ron, TX   March 20th, 2008 3:41 pm ET

McCain is a good man. If Obama doesn't get the nomination, I'll definitely go for him over Hillary.

Derrick Martin   March 20th, 2008 3:41 pm ET

Why does everything I negative aboyut Hillary Cliton get moderated. Are you afaid of dissenting opinions. You all are playing a dangerous game with this electiion when it is not even a game.

doug   March 20th, 2008 3:41 pm ET

Swiftboat has begun. My biggest concern is that the economy is crumbling and J. Mccain says he does'nt know to much about economics.

Thomas   March 20th, 2008 3:41 pm ET

WoW McCane looks much better then Obama the flip flopper!

Derrick Martin   March 20th, 2008 3:39 pm ET

This shows how afraid of Barack that they are. They know that they will have a better chance agaisnt the lying Hillary Clinton.

Adam, Los Angeles   March 20th, 2008 3:39 pm ET

McCain has no need to use personal attacks against Obama; Senator Clinton's campaign is doing fine job on their own.

Veterans for Obama   March 20th, 2008 3:38 pm ET

Why can't Hillary show such integrity?

Debbie   March 20th, 2008 3:38 pm ET

Wow Hillary, McCain has more integrity than you do. Maybe you will put him in office after all since you said he is ready for day 1.

Lynnette   March 20th, 2008 3:37 pm ET

Good for you, McCain.

Karen p   March 20th, 2008 3:37 pm ET

Good. However, it seems someone is always putting out smear stuff then McCain says ooops, we're not gonna do that. McCain needs to be PERFECTLY clear what his campaign will or won't do to his supporters and why it is bad for America.

We're sick to death of "smear" and degrading remarks and tactics (that's Hillary's job).

Amy in Iowa   March 20th, 2008 3:37 pm ET

Can McCain teach his friend Hillary Clinton the same type of ethics?

Stacy Clarks, Texas   March 20th, 2008 3:37 pm ET

WELL DONE MCCAIN!!!

Obama still has my vote, but I can't wait till Obama and McCain runs so we can see what a civilized election season looks like!!!

OBAMA 08!!!

Nerakami   March 20th, 2008 3:37 pm ET

I am falling more and more in love with McCain... still hate his policies, but am loving the man more everyday..

Grif   March 20th, 2008 3:36 pm ET

You don't need it John... They dig their own Holes...

Sylvester   March 20th, 2008 3:36 pm ET

Wow...McCain probably scored major points for politically maturity. That was a bold and admirable move.

Hillary, you are KILLING the Democrats.

tie.lee3@sbcglobal.net   March 20th, 2008 3:36 pm ET

Got my vote

Vince Los Angeles, CA   March 20th, 2008 3:36 pm ET

Good for you McCain. If Hillary Clinton is the nominee for the Dems....YOU WILL HAVE MY VOTE!!

BMartin, Duluth, MN   March 20th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

When do we get to hear about the issues?
