Obama calls for investigation into passport file snooping

Obama is calling for a congressional investigation.

Obama is calling for a congressional investigation.

(CNN) - Sen. Barack Obama Friday called for an investigation into how the security of the passport files of the three remaining presidential candidates was breached.

The State Department admitted Friday that the passport files of Obama, Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. John McCain had been accessed without authorization.

"One of the things that the American people count on in their interactions with any level of government is that if they have to disclose personal information that it stay personal and stay private," Obama said in Portland, Oregon.

"And when you have not just one but a series of attempts to tap into people's personal records, that's a problem not just for me, but for how our government is functioning," he said.

Obama said he expected "a full and thorough investigation" by the administration done in conjunction with congressional oversight committees.

The State Department's inspector general has already started an investigation, department officials said.

Attorney General Michael Mukasey said the Justice Department had not launched an investigation and did not expect to unless it was asked by the inspector general.

"R" – don't be such a silly goat. It's not about our right to privacy, it's about CNN's love for Obama.

  4. No longer and Obama Supporter in Illinois

just got done watching CNN Newsroom... the Obama supporter all ready is saying that he thinks that it is political... they need to find out who the contract was through and who they support...

he thinks there is more to this and is trying to link it to McCain or Clinton... how sad is that... everytime something happens Obama Supporters think Clinton did it...

For someone that is ahead in the delegate votes and is ahead in popular vote (w/o MI and FL) he sure acts nervous, paranoid, and reckless... How again does he show great judgement???

Next week is going to be very interesting... Obama still dealing with Wright and more Rezko news coming out daily... How does this show good judgement???

Sad to say we were fooled in IL...

We want an investigation into why he says his grandmother is a typical "White Person." I don't know about you, but I think he is saying we are racist.

Looks like CNN doesn't like anyone comment against Obama. This news is a distraction to Wright story.

I think this has been blown way out of proportion. It's not political, republican and dem's were looked at. There are stupid people who work everywhere and these employee's (contractors?) were just not very smart. No conspiracy. Let's move on already. I hate seeing my tax dollars go to this investigation. They were fired already. The system worked, they got caught.

A full investigation is needed into CNN and it's biased and not fair reporting. Good grief. Like someone said earlier—he's not the President yet. His wanting a "full investigation" is hardly front page news.

Time 4 Action- Why does Obama give you hope? Hope about what exactly? Can you give me any specifics? I've been waiting for months to see what change he is referring to. Is it change in taxes (he will make us pay more) change in health care (he will ruin our system and we will all be looking elsewhere for coverage), change in policies? Which policies? Please inform me and be specific.

Gil – California, get your facts straight. McCain isn't keeping the war going for 100 years. Do you know we still have bases in Germany and Korea and elsewhere? Do you consider those places at war? Its the same thing here. He wants a presence in the middle east. If your going to be involved, be correct with your facts please. Make informed decisions.

That's it, start another committee to investigate a simple matter and waste millions of tax dollars in the process. DOS has already investigated and brought it to your attention and disciplined the employees.

You call this leadership on your part?

Does Obama not think the story about McCain's and Clinton's same privacy being breeched is just as important? Or do they not have the right to be offended since they simply are typical white people? Obama must now accept the double standard he is accustomed no longer applies. The rules have changed, he now is playing hard ball with the tough guys & gals on capital hill. Does he want cheese with this whine?
