McPeak's comment is drawing controversy.
McPeak's comment is drawing controversy.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A retired Air Force general who works for Barack Obama says a statement by Bill Clinton is a disguised insult that sounds like McCarthyism.

Merrill McPeak is a co-chairman of Obama's presidential campaign and he compares the comment by the former president to communist-hunting Senator Joe McCarthy of the 1950s.

Campaigning for his wife in North Carolina, Clinton said it would be a great thing if we had an election year where, "you had two people who loved this country and were devoted to the interest of this country." Instead, he said, there's "all this other stuff."

McPeak says he lived through the years when McCarthy "was accusing good Americans of being traitors" and says he's "had enough of it."

Hillary Clinton's campaign spokesman Phil Singer rejects the comparison as "absurd." He says McPeak has misinterpreted the former president's statement.

I think everything the Clintons do or say gets twisted. I cannot believe that after watching those hate sermons that I am sure was not news to Obama because he did not denied hearing them that decent Americans would trust to vote for him. Imagine Richardson called himself a very good friend of the Clintons came out just like Judas plotted to betray Hillary on holy Thursday and handed her over on good Friday. I would not trust him to be in my company if I was Obama but then again Obama cannot judge for himself he would have to ask the Rev and he is out the country and cannot be reached by phone. Richardson should be ashamed of himself. Again Obama did not vote for the war or against it because he did not have to vote. He has also not done anything patriotic for America and I always wonder but after viewing the sermons and listening to Rev. Wright I realize why. Everyone has their own view on matters and this is mine. I think the Hispanic community is disapointed that Richardson would betray the Clintons like this in Holy week. They are a COMMITTED GROUP AND DO NOT FORGET WHO HELPED THEM BUT RICHARDSON IS IN IT FOR HIMSELF. he believes that Hillary is loosing and will not be able to give him a position again so he jumped to Obama who is winning to be on his ticket. But traitors will always be traitors. A leopard never changes his spots. The race is not over yet hope is still alive. He will live to regret this.Of all the people that has endorsed Obama he is the Judas he claimed to be a very good friend of the Clintons. He spent many times with them eating and dipping in the same dish with them. This also reminds me of an old popular Shakespearian play. Don't run to your friend for help because HE will be the one to drive the nail. Hillary should not feel bad about this because America has seen Richardson for what he really is. He could not even try to seek another Presidency. He should have given Obama his support before then it would have made a difference in my opinion. I would have respected that or wait and do it at the convention. GL.

"all that other stuff?" is this what we can look forward to from the Clintons? What about Monica Lewinsky and Paula Jones and Peter Paul - those "the other stuff" Mr Clinton?

CNN I am suprised you allow some of these ignorant comments to be posted. I guess thats why its known that Obama's supporters are more educated than Clinton supporters. Billary Clinton will never have my vote AGAIN. Call that buyer's remorse

Monica ..

I am confused on what you think you guys have done .. I can check again but I am pretty sure that Obana doesn't have 2,025 .. so what's been done? Another successful smeer campaign by the Obama Camp? - The audacity .. and I had hoped he would truly rise above the negative, as he stated he would ..

As, a black women I can say that I am offended by the " typical white person " comment. This country has enough issues as it is, and trying to make race one and then spinning it and blaming it on your opponent is impressive ( David Cooperfield must have helped him w/ that magic trick ..)

.. Sorry I know off topic, but this a race and it ain't over 'til it's over .. and the finish line is at 2,025 ..

A proud black women, and Hillary supporter until the end!

So wheres the beef Obama's camp and Obama can only cry like babies I like to know what planet these people are on and Bill Richardson/ big mistake and this is why your will never be president. What's Obama going to do if he's president and we get hit cry that's not fair we weren't warned? People wake up he is no Kennedy. and if you want Rev Wright that's what your more likely to get.

Records?   March 22nd, 2008 11:54 am ET

Instead of this we'd like stories on the candidates' records. What legistlative achievements have they had while in public office? How have they helped their own constituents and this country?

Obama said he would use Bill Clinton in his admin. Why would he allow an underling say such things?

Who needs enemies with friends like Gov. Richardson? What a traitor! He could have voted for Obama and still retained the Clinton's friendship. Iam glad that he did not make it as one of the contenders for the dems nom.

The Democratic party is full of losers, I don't care if they never recover from the mess they have created for themselves! Iam an independent and will vote for Hill if she is nominated, otherwise will vote for McCain. He does not NEED SIX AMERICAN FLAGS surrounding him as Obama did , for the voters to know he is a true patriot and not a politico trying to destroy this great country of ours with all of its imperfections, GOD BLESS AMERICA AND KEEP SAFE FROM MEN WHO DESTROY IT FROM WITHIN.

It is unfortunate to see a very good, former President stoop to tactics that are the basic political tools of the Republicans: insults and defamation. He should know better, he, being the subject of the same for seven years of his Presidency. I hope and pray, he come to his senses and tones down his attacks on a fellow Democrat.
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE. NOW.

Name-calling is divisive. General who?

he is right. i am tired of the subliminal subconcious messages the clinton campaign has been trying to put out to the public. anyone who is still getting all upset when clinton is called out on it just remember the interview where Hillary Clinton said Obama wasn't muslim "as far as she knew." Is McCain a Muslim "as far as you know" Hillary?
The sooner Hillary's supporters stop shrieking sexism every time someone criticizes the haphazard Clinton campaign is the sooner we can move her out of the way and start rallying around our nominee, Obama.
Oh and by the way in response to some of the ladies on this post - I am a white female and i am voting for Obama. If he is not on the ballot I will write him in. Hillary i just do not trust

gerry   March 22nd, 2008 11:53 am ET

That comparision of Bill Clinton is being generous. I hope Bill keeps talking, every time he opens his mouth, Hillary's negatives go up and her popular support go down.

Keep chatting Bill, soon she won't be electable as a small town mayor.

R   March 22nd, 2008 11:52 am ET

As we all know Obama campaign is all about POSITIVE CAMPAIGNING…ATLEAST THAT IS WHAT I HEARD IN THE MEDIA. OBAMA campaign sent out a photo which shows Obama's pastor and Bill Clinton together. Why did they send it and what is their intention ?. It is so POSITIVE of them to do to a rival. As Bill Richardson said, this is once in a lifetime moment to witness such a positive campaign

JennyM   March 22nd, 2008 11:52 am ET

If this election is about who said what to who .. we are doomed .

If you vote for a religious affiliaton one way or the other then you deserve to get the very nightmare we have had with Bush,.

Sometimes Americans can be just stupid … white, black, brown, or asian . Stupid comes in all colors unfortunately.

Ginny   March 22nd, 2008 11:51 am ET

Unbelievable! Iam so tired of poor Obama playing the "I's being repressed" card. Give me a break I am a college educated 40 year old professional woman and I am making 60 cents for every man's dollar how about that for repression.

Roberto from Roma   March 22nd, 2008 11:51 am ET

The Clintons will do anything to get elected again. If they are able to win the nomination by tearing down Obama, they deserve to get trashed by McBush in November. Hillary has zero chance of winning a general election even if the economy is in Depression not Recession. This is so sad because America actually has a last chance for redemption, and his name is Obama.

edward0911   March 22nd, 2008 11:51 am ET

I am extremely disappointed that deep inside Obama he is a racist. Especially hearing now that he compares his Grandmother with a TYPICAL WHITE PERSON. This is not the remark of somebody who campaigns as to bringin the country together. I am also extremely dissapointed that more then 90% of the black voters are voting for him.
This is the only race that supports a canditate in those overwhelming numbers. It is just not possible that so many people from a specific race COMPLETELY agree with a canditate. My mind has been made up and I would like to see CNN take a critical look at this issue while Obama himself stated IMUS to resign after a racial comment he made. This would mean that he is a hypocrite with a hidden agenda.

ScottG   March 22nd, 2008 11:51 am ET

It's just another comment by Bill Clinton in a long line of remarks like this in a veiled attack on misconceptions of Sen. Obama. Both bill and Hillary have done this, like when she hesitated ans said "as far as I know he's not", refering to a question about his religion. If it was what they say it was why did they have to clarify his statement??? These two(Bill and Hillary) are actually getting creepy in they're desperate attempt to get back into the White House.

The man who knew too much? The truth about the death of Hillary Clinton's close friend Vince Foster

In real life, Vince Foster was distraught at the prospect of being grilled about the shady affairs of Hillary Clinton. President Bill Clinton was angry over a possible personal love affair between them.

He had died from a gunshot wound to the mouth and his father's .38 caliber revolver, dating from 1913, was at his side.

Makes you wonder what was really going on in the White House when the Clinton's was in charge….?

Obama needs to understand that he is not presidential material. And as far as Hillary goes, stop blaming her for her husband's past mistakes. It is old news, millions were spent and nothing was found. Please, get over it.

It looks as if Barack Obama's speech the other day is really bringing out people's true colors. There are are people on this blog that are totally clueless. If you can't see what the Clinton campaign is doing, you are blind. And all you so-called Obama supporters who are now voting for Hillary were never true Obama supporter in the beginning. So, your comments are irrelevant.

I love Bil Clinton and always will. In my lifetime, the most prosperous the country has been and I personally have been has been under the Clinton administration.

At least with Hillary, we know what we are getting.

With Obama, the surprises just keep coming.

The man is right. I think much of the Ferraro, Wright surrogate mess is overblown, but I was absolutely DISGUSTED by Bill Clinton's not-so-subtle cut on Obama.

I was a big Bill Clinton supporter and i still think he was a great president. But if i were Barack Obama and heard what thet old goat said yesterday I'd never, ever speak to him again.

That was an awful thing to say, and it did remind me of McCarthy. Hillary is running like a Republican and it's shameful.

Margo   March 22nd, 2008 11:45 am ET

Well looky here, just another friend of obama who like to trash people. He should go to Wright's church and ask for forgiveness…LOL

Proud Vet   March 22nd, 2008 11:45 am ET

The General is correct. Good Americans with dissenting views have been castigated too long. The Clintons rule through fear, plain and simple. They have dirt on everybody. They are the epitome of 'the politics of fear'. On the issue of racism: The cat is out of the bad on the Clintons. They've been using the Black community for years. As soon as Hillary got into trouble and the coronation was no longer gaurenteed, Bill pulled out the race card. They are what they are: White crackers from Arkansas.

Racism must end now. Obama 08.

HILLARY SIMILAR TO MCCAIN   March 22nd, 2008 11:45 am ET

I thought they muzzled Bill? Guess they thought this would be "useful." Apparently there's no task too dirty for Bill . . .

(I say this as someone who gave over $1,000 to Bill's campaign in 1992, and who is sufficiently disgusted with the way he and his wife have been campaining that I am now firmly in Obama's camp.)

Mark from GA   March 22nd, 2008 11:41 am ET

The General is saying that Slick Willy is using McCarthyist tactics by questioning the patriotism of those who don't fall in line with his (and his wife's) personal political agenda. It is a strong comparison, but not out-of-bounds. Barack needs to stand by the General on this one. and not cave to the Clinton "double-standard" machine.

Cruiser66   March 22nd, 2008 11:41 am ET

If you can read and COMPREHEND and understand INFERENCE, then you will know exactly what Bill Clinton meant. He said, after making glowing remarks about McCain, (and I paraphrase), that it would be great to have TWO candidates running in the general election who love America. Now, that in inferring that Obama does not love American. The polls suggest that more people vote for Clinton who are not college educated. If you cannot understand the concept of INFERENCE, maybe the polls are right!

Debbie   March 22nd, 2008 11:41 am ET

Obama has deliberately opened a gaping wound around race. We've gone back 20 years in time when people couldn't open their mouths without someone accusing them of racism. Many black Americans have benefited from the Clinton's efforts for equality. CNN you should do a special on these. (I use the term black, because many black people say this is preferable to African Americans - so that is another example of the complexity of language).

I accuse Obama of being divisive not a "uniter". What has he done to advance the causes of Black americans?

Give me a break. What do you want Bill Clinton to say? That Hillary and McCain wouldn't be a good match up?

Every critique of Barack Obama is greeted by his supporters with anger and rage. It's unbelievable. A future psychology graduate student will be writing a prize dissertation about the Obama supporter and their odd attachment to the man. They hear a criticism and I'm sure they fall asleep crying in the fetal position.

joanna   March 22nd, 2008 11:40 am ET

Is this guy the "great uniter" ? Seems each time he ( or wife) he opens his mouth a racial slur comes out of it. This man is not uniting this country at all, but simply stirring more and more racial tensions with his verbal blunders.

No to Obama's unmoderate racial remarks. A "typical white person" , my foot. I suppose we could also say " typical black comments" coming from his and his pastor's speeches. They two of the same: racial hate mongers.

No to Obama and to his racial disunity speeches!

North Carolina   March 22nd, 2008 11:40 am ET

Adam   March 22nd, 2008 11:39 am ET

I think the Obama camp needs to realize they need a gag order on all advisors and employees of the campaign - they are just looking more and more petty and desperate! For someone who claims it should be about the issues, we haven't seen that since his decisive losses in Ohio and Texas. This is not boding well for his campaign or the Democratic party should he (unfortunately) become the nominee.

Chipo   March 22nd, 2008 11:39 am ET

BARACK IS SO COOKED

LOLOLOL - "the chickens have come home to roost"

DEAL WITH IT

The saddest thing about all this is that "the typical White person" - including me - really DID believe that once Barack got a few years experience under his belt as Hillary's VP

He would be UNBEATABLE

I REALLY did BELIEVE in "hope and change AND experience"

Sorry, Barack, at this point, you are unelectable - even IF Hillary bridges the "race gap" - LOL

Let me get this straight. Hillary gets behind… says out in the open that she's going to "throw the kitchen sink" at Obama…. Does so…. and when the media and Obama's people call that to the attention of the voters… they are being nasty…. talk about gall…. I think you all have been playing too many one player computer games…. where you can just hit the "do over" buttons when you get behind.

These two are right. We must vote Democratic regardless of who the nominee is. Those of you who would vote for McCain because you don't like the winning nominee, don't be foolish. McCain will just be 4 more years of Bush policies. Now tell me, do any of us want 4 more years of bush policies? I would think not, so we need to put aside our differences and vote for the democratic nominee, no matter who it is. A democrat winner means America can get back on track, but John McCain winning means 4 more years of bush policies. It's your choice, if the nominee you don't like wins, you have 2 options.
1) vote for that nominee, whoever it is, he/she will clean up America for us
2) vote for the guy whose policies are the same as Bush.

It's your choice. Please make the right choice and choose choice 1.

mccarthy?   March 22nd, 2008 11:36 am ET

McCarthy? A bit of overreaching. Clinton's intent, by the context of the whole speech, seems to be a desire to let two good candidates focus on issues instead of nonsense. The Obama camp's irrational reaction makes Mr. Clinton's point for him–he was not questioning anyone's love for America.

I read an interesting article in the Chicago Tribune about how way back in 1996, Obama's people managed to disqualify a known and respected Democratic activist and 3-time State Senator from running against him for her own seat (Alice Palmer) after her failed Congressional bid. His team's tactics forced everyone to "obey the rules." According to news reports Mr. Obama has not spoken to her since that time. Her political career ended and his began.

There is more to this man than just his speeches. I really hope the media and the public get to know about his record in Illinois so they can evaluate him more thoroughly. Meanwhile these wild accusations ("McCarthyism") seem to be a distraction from real issues.

Listen folks, talk about digging deep to try and bring up negative news regarding the Clintons this is pretty deep. Why don't you start asking Obama himself about why he attended a church for 20 years that stands on and still does without Wright racist values. This is not the kind of person I want to be President be he/she black or white. Racism is not something we should encourage or support in this country.

President Clinton loves all Americans. He would also like the Democrats to win. If he opens his mouth about "anything" he is painted the way the media decides to paint him.

There is no one further from loving African Amerricans. His office is in Harlem, NY by his own choice.

He is a Rhode Scholar.

People throughtout the WORLD loved him and " first lady " Hillary

Clinton has said NOTHING about Obama being un-American.

Presiden Clinton deserves to be supported by ALL Americans.

anything to deflect attention from the racist "reverend" scandal, but it's not gonna work! when are cnn polls going to reflect that Hillary is ahead of him, because she is winning. talk about being devisive, and throwing the kiichen sink. I thought obama was suppose to be above all of this "silly season" of politics. obama is showing us what he is a typical politician, just like the rest of them.

patrik   March 22nd, 2008 11:34 am ET

Obama is unelectable and all this does is prolong the McCain victory. These political barbs they throw at the Clintons are funny and, ultimately, important in diverting attention away from the real issues facing the country.

Darryl   March 22nd, 2008 11:34 am ET

Bill Clinton andHillary Clinton both are two people that are hungry for power at anu cost. intead of working got the betterment of America Bill Clinton was selling out America to Dubai Port World.

However,CNN, FOX, MSNBC would rather stir the RACE CARD.

I love America and gave 20 years of my life to the service of my country and I teach my kids to do the same. However, look at the Clinton they never gave nothing to no one with out expecting something back in return…..

Please I challenge everyone to do your own research on what Bill and Hillary actually done for sone one else.

Are you stupid by nature , or are you just naturally stupid?

bob east   March 22nd, 2008 11:34 am ET

When is this "poor me" style of politics going to stop? There is NOTHING in what the former President said that smacks of McCarthyism. There was NOTHING said in South Carolina that was racist and there was NOTHING racist about the comment by Geraldine Ferraro.
Those of us old enough to remember the 60's and 70's can recall that with racial tensions at a peak every word was scrutinized as being racist or off color by all sides. Now it seems to have found its way into the supporters of Sen Obama.
If the Senator thinks the comments made by Bill Clinton were out of line, then let him, as canidate and an adult, say.
Supporters need to stop all this whining and let the candidates do thier job-campaign and convince us that they are best suited for the job. For a military man to engage in name calling is so far beneath us as Americans it is unblievable!
Can the grown-ups please reappear in this campaign?

Chanel   March 22nd, 2008 11:34 am ET

All I want to say if the shoe was on the other foot right now and Obama was behind in the popular vote and delegates the media and the world would be calling for him to step down in the best interest of the Democratic Party. Now it just seems the media is dragging this out more than the candidates.

Rohan   March 22nd, 2008 11:33 am ET

Only 120 delegate (super+pledged) difference between Hillary and Obama, however, some people are already calling Hillary to QUIT ???? because they fear the party will split. How is this called democracy ?. How about the other states yet to vote ?. Yes, there is a split. Half of the democrats voted for Hillary. So, how in the world, anyone can call off the race now and award the nomination to Obama ?. OBAMA SAID THAT HE WILL OBEY THE RULES OF THE PARTY, SO WE ALL SHOULD WAIT TILL ALL THE STATES VOTE AND THEN DECIDE.

Charlotte   March 22nd, 2008 11:33 am ET

Obama is a liar, he thinks just like his minister and mentor. The same speech over and over. The urgency of now and I did not vote for the war, are repeated over and over and over again. That's all there is to him.

idahosa, winnipeg, Canada   March 22nd, 2008 11:32 am ET

for those who have not seen or read the actual comments that bill made here it is

"I think it would be a great thing if we had an election year where you had two people who loved this country and were devoted to the interest of this country," said Clinton,

"And people could actually ask themselves who is right on these issues, instead of all this other stuff that always seems to intrude itself on our politics."

when did bill start making careless statements? well, not then and certainly not now. he is too smart to make statements that are so plain or explicit and any clinton supporter should know that by now.

it is very obvious that he is trying to keep the wright issue alive and the general had to check him on that. just like his jesse jackson comment back fired, so will this one and i hope this get him out of the scene completely.

bill could have made that comment without bringing patriotism into it.

oh least i forget,

Obama '08

chris   March 22nd, 2008 11:32 am ET

To all the people who read and post comments on CNN.com, I challenge you to read each and every comment. Reading these comments trouble me. Maybe the comparison is too extreme but we all must admitted Bill purposefully excluded Obama from his statement. At the very least Bill left Obama out of the statement to stir up controversy. I hope Bill did not intend to suggest that Obama was unamerican because he has dedicated his life to helping the American people.

Another thing that troubles me is the one drop rule which defines Obama as a black man when in fact he was RASIED by his WHITE mother and his WHITE grandparents. He is 50% WHITE. Barack heavily resembles his WHITE grandfather.

jgzeger   March 22nd, 2008 11:30 am ET

McPeak's remarks which are full of stereotyping and misleading accusations certainly take credibility away from Obama's claim that he is offering a new style of politics in America

Kathleen   March 22nd, 2008 11:29 am ET

The Clinton's are wrapped up in destroying the Democratic Party and it is time for the Democratic Party to STAND UP, GET SMART and SEE WHAT THE CLINTON'S ARE DOING BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE. Hillary is going to jeopardized all of CURRENT POSITIONS. Everyone is going to suffer because of what they are doing. If this continues there will be NO Democrats in Congress. THIS HAS TO STOP!

Descent of the Clintons   March 22nd, 2008 11:28 am ET

Bill Clinton giveth, and he taketh away. His comments are just another reason for the superdelegates to come together and put an end to Hillary's trainwreck campain. Florida and MIchigan are gone, despite Hillary's best efforts to ignore well-documented rules and try to make Barack look like the bad guy for following the rules and not accepting Hillary's victories against nobody. The slightest chance you had of winning the delegate race is now over. And any Clinton supporter who thinks the superdelegates will put Hillary over the top at the convention is, well, wrong. In a relatively close race with huge public interest surrounding it, the winner will be the winner, no matter how much wining and dining Hill and Bill try. Go ahead and narrowly win big states. Barack has doubled your total state count, and talking about Ohio gives everyone headaches now. Hillary, if you've ever seen "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory", you"re sort of like Veruca Salt, and the tour has stopped at the Hatchery. Veruca starts making a big fuss and disrespects others because she's not getting what she wants. I just hope this campaign race ends soon before Hillary ends up falling down the "bad egg" shute.

General McPeak stands for no-nonsence administrations. He held the respect of the enlisted men in the US Air Force. Like E.F. Hutton, when he spoke, we listened. Those officers that thought he was a joke, had their walking papers handed to them.

Obama-Richardson is the ticket for 2008!

Seems to me to be very telling that Richardson calls for Clinton to drop out of the race now. Obama's campaign is in freefall–of course they don't want to see him trounced in the next few months. If Hillary wasn't a viable choice, Obama wouldn't care. Note McCain did not demand that Huckabee drop out. It's very important that Clinton stay in the race as Obama continues to self-destruct.

What a crock!   March 22nd, 2008 11:25 am ET

This guy McPeak really takes the cake! That's the most ludicrous comparison I've ever heard, even coming from the ludicrous Obama camp. But kinda makes sense . . . Obama himself can't talk about anything substantive, and then he sends a surrogate out there who can't do it, either. Just too funny, really.

Bob   March 22nd, 2008 11:24 am ET

Merrill McPeak is the most disingenuous man that I have ever met! I was an Obama supporter up until the time that I found out that McPeak is a co-chairman of Obama's campaign bid. His self-centered ego is no doubt looking to be the new Secretary of Defense, and I can't fathom this creep as a SecDEf…. So, OK, who's left to vote for now? McCain or Clinton… As a returning POW McCain stated that he wanted to prosecute all his fellow POW's that caved in under torture as POW's and yet he's not willing to prosecute illegal aliens in this country?!?! What a hypocrite!!!

The Clintons twist what the Clintons say! I know its difficult for the Clinton followers to see through the trees. The Clintons have perfected back handed comments and people blindly believe them.

"I did not have sexual relations with that woman"

Clinton followers - Well that's true because it was a cigar.

big_puppy   March 22nd, 2008 11:24 am ET

I thought that Bill was better than that, he has been a disappointment so far in trying to push his wife's campaign. These little insults and then oh they're taking my words out of context. He speaks in measured words so he means just what he said.

Come on Bill stop playing the sneak game.

Pat M Canada   March 22nd, 2008 11:24 am ET

I have always admired Bill Clinton for his intellet, political and economic genius and oration skills. However, the Bill in this Campaign seems to have a different glow.

I think for the good of Hilalry's Campaign, he should give more insight to his statements before putting them out there. And his statements should include clarity not double speak or vague intent.

I am not smart, but these comments looks to me just old politics. Obama & Obama compaign this is what american people tired of old washing politics, why Obama is throwing so much -ve stuff at Clinton is it because he is showing true color, Obama lied about his pastor talk about transparancy. Why can't obama focused on issues ,oh wait !! he can't because he has no clue about these issues.

It continues to amaze me the way that journalist give we citizens their version of the news. Our society is one of the most judgmental ones in history. Take one word and have a field day with it. When you criticize Obama for adding the word typical to his description of white people you must be forgetting he is bi-racial. Why would he want to discredit either of his races. To me he is the best of both races and my view of him is that he wants to be accepted by both. Could that be part of his unifying message? As far as Bill Clinton, when will you as journalist tell the real stories about both of the Clinton's? Hillary stayed with Bill after all the scandal and disgrace he brought not only to his and her family but to the White House, the Presidency, and also shame on the United States of America. We know what Bill meant in his speech,(are we so shallow that we need you to point it out to us)SHAME SHAME on you Bill, what you or Hillary both will do to have the luxuries of the Oval Office and the power you need in order to survive. Rev Wright story will die when you don't need it anymore and only then. Get this, I'M SICK OF IT!

That said, he's still right.

Michael from Notre Dame   March 22nd, 2008 11:21 am ET

Cathy   March 22nd, 2008 11:20 am ET

So the new means of getting out of something you said intentionally that is insulting to the other campaign is to say "I was misunderstood." That's the same as whining, "You people just don't understand me!" I've heard the Obama camp use this excuse once, early on in the campaign, and since it worked in his favor, the Clintons have used it EVERY SINGLE TIME SINCE. I'd like someone to sit down and count the number of times we've "misunderstood" Bill Clinton. No, Mr. Ex-President, we understand you loud and clear. And we don't like it.

debbie,NJ   March 22nd, 2008 11:20 am ET

JL   March 22nd, 2008 11:20 am ET

The quest for the democratic nomination has become nothing more than confirmation bias and self-fulfilling prophecy. I have seen supporters on both sides look for the worst in the candidate that they are not supporting, not realizing that they are both democrats and one of them is going to be the nominee. Let's stop being divisive because we keep returning to the same thing - petty bickering back and forth. Just look at the comments posted on here! It sounds more like the Montagues and Capulets, or Hatfields and McCoys, rather than democrats and democrats. Let's stick to the real issue and get a democrat elected!

The monstrification of the Clintons by the Obama campaign is truly the most pathetic thing about this mess.

And although I think this entire Wright controversy is stupid, it really does level the playing-field in my opinion.

Obama's rise was NOT because of his stand on the issues, or his competency, it was because of his being a media darling, and his flimsy "inspiration".

Cheap rise…cheap fall.

Dan, you are probably correct that there was nothing wrong with what former president Bill Clinton said, but that's what the media does, pick out parts of words that they want to interpret in a different manner. All in all, this has to stop because the Democrats are fighting amongst one another, and I believe this is what Obama was up front with. He did not want to see vebal chaos, but Hillary said that she is a fighter and she wants to going on knowing that she is dividing the Democratic Party. In my opinion, Hillary and Bill don't mind who they have to step on in the process.

If every American that worked for a company for more than 20 years, that was under paid, denied promotions and healthcare or a raise. Its time to throw that company under the bus. Any American that listen to a family member, neigbor, friend, co-worker, employer that habor or spoke hatred regarding race, religion or gender. Its time you threw them under the bus. Its time for every American to research their family members, neigbors, co-workers, employers that you've been around daliy for years and find out if they have hatred in their hearts., and if so throw them under the bus.

JFK   March 22nd, 2008 11:10 am ET

What a bunch of loosers!!!!! Not only can they not read in the Obama camp but as things get tight - they turn negative - showing of course, that Senator Obama is no different than any other candidate - oh but for - Reverend Wright!

Senator Obama has lost the support from many many Americans, not for what Reverend Wright said but because Senator Obama stuck around for 20 years listening to it and exposing his children to such anti-American, anti-white trash talk.

So what will be next out of the Obama camp? Oh, some poor story that of course we are to all feel sorry for him. Of course, some of the supporters are nothing more than 'typical white people'……….

Loosers!!!!!!!!!!

Ifychris   March 22nd, 2008 11:09 am ET

After many debates and ect…, Obama is leading excluding the superdelegates. There are people in the media that can't see how Hillary is going to win and she might not even win with the superdelegates. She is the blame for keep lingering on with this campaigning between her and Obama, and have the American people verbally fighting between her and Obama. I wonder what would have happen if Obama was in second. Would he be forced to stop is campaigning?

It is interesting to note the in the last week or so all the negative compainig has come from the Obama camp..A man who says "we need change" but yet continues to back negative politics.

I don't understand his surge in the polls. Obama backers are blind to his rethorical politics, his talks a good line but doesn't back it up with solid methods of change. Sorry Obama backers you can't see the forest through the trees.

A little word about McPeak. He served as the USAF Chief of Staff in the 80″s..He screwed up our service with his ideas of change, including our uniform. I wouldn't trust him as far as can throw him let along listen to his worthless words.

Anything she's saying now (which are all lies so she can win at all costs) will go out the window as soon as she's sworn in.
It was the Clinton camp that told Canada that her threats on NAFTA were "political posturing" and should be "taken with a grain of salt".
Ohio bought it, but it's too late for them…..Pennsylvania won't be so stupid!!!
Thank you Bill Richardson for being a strong man of incredible character and good judgement. You're extremely appreciated by millions and millions of people in this country!!

He is busy worrying about everyone else but AMERICANS. He may have secured his party's nomination, but the people are still waiting to see what he has to offer. This sit out and wait for the democrats to tear each other apart philosophy only demonstrates how much he truly cares about America and Americans (and he wonders why he can’t raise any money). Where are you McCain? What will you do for America?

RENEA,PLYMOUTH,MI   March 22nd, 2008 11:05 am ET

THIS IS LUNACY FOR BILL CLINTON TO SAY HILLARY I AND MCCAIN LOVE THIS COUNTRY MORE THAN OBAMA SO THEY SHOULD BE PRESIDENT! AFTER THE BUSH YEARS OF CALLING EVERYONE IN THIS COUNTRY UN-PATROTIC IF YOU DARED TO QUESTION WHAT THIS COUNTRY DOING IS A INSULT! WHEN DID THE NEW TEST BECOME YOU ARE MORE PATROTIC OR A BETTER COMMANDER-IN- CHEIF? I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THESE ARE THE NEW TESTS HOW WOULD YOU PROVE IT ANYWAY?

Robert   March 22nd, 2008 11:05 am ET

I'M sick and tired of all the Obama degrading of the Clintons and all the good they have done for America, and the citizens thereof. They DO LOVE AMERICA. The OBAMAS DO NOT LOVE OR CARE ABOUT ANYTHING BUT THEMSELVES. Obama will do and say ANYTHING to win.He CANNOTtell the truth, because he never has and NEVER EVER WILL

I concur!!!!!!

At least Clinton doesn't go to Somalia to talk to terrorists. Watch in a day its going to hit the media Obama went to Somalia to talk to terrorists.

DAN HUDSON   March 22nd, 2008 11:04 am ET

WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH PEOPLE WHEN THEY DON'T LISTEN. CLEARLY MR. MCPEAK MUST HAVE A HEARING PROBLEM. I HAVE READ AND RE-READ THE STATMENT THAT PRESIDENT CLINTON MADE AND I CERTAINLY DID NOT SEE ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT. I FEEL LIKE PRESIDENT CLINTON WAS SIMPLY SAYING THAT HE DOESN'T SEE THE POINT OF TWO CANIDATES FROM THE SAME PARTY GOING AT ONE ANOTHERS THROATS ALL THE TIME. IT IS MY PERSONAL OPINION THAT WHAT WE HAVE ALL BEEN SEEING IN THE LAST FEW WEEKS IS NOT HELPING THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY AT ALL. IF MR. OBAMA AND MS. CLINTON DON'T STOP THEIR INFIGHTING THEY ARE LIKELY BOTH GOING TO LOSE VOTES IN NOVEMBER. GOD KNOWS THAT WE DON'T NEED FOUR MORE YEARS OF REPUBLICAN DOMINATION ESPECIALLY AFTER WHAT WE HAVE SEEN IN THE LAST SEVEN AND A HALF YEARS.

Bill and Hillary have been praising John McCain that it makes you wonder if they're planning on switching parties and endorsing him. Bill Clinton is a master and twisting and turning his words. It's what got him out of his many scandals during the 90s. This is a man that I used to admire and respect. I'm afraid that his legacy has been tarnished for good.

Charlie   March 22nd, 2008 11:02 am ET

This was obviously a cheap shot by the President. I do think they want McCain to win if they can't.

Why the bashing on Richardson for being disloyal? That is a patheitc arguement. Because he worked for the Clinton's he has to endorse her? Can't he have a free mind to choose what is right for the country? The Clinton chronyism is just like Bush's - they are no different !

Monica   March 22nd, 2008 11:01 am ET

This is no longer about Bill and Hillary. Hillary has already lost. This is about the news media flaming the fire.

I'm getting off now, and plan to have a great weekend. Barack has already won the Dem nomination and Obama supporters should start acting like it. Don't give the Clintons the time of day, because that is how they are keeping Hillary's non-campaign going.

I'm out of here and I will start celebrating his win this weekend.

THE TRUTH IS SHE ALREADY LOST THE ELECTION.

Want an inside look at Hillary. Read between the lines:

"I talked to Senator Clinton last night,” Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico said on Friday

"Let me tell you: we’ve had better conversations,” Mr. Richardson said.

Chris Dodd said essentially the same thing, implying that Hillary was very unpleasant.

I am appalled at the level of releckless comments and inferences made by the Pres. Clinton.
It is a strong indicator that inteligent people out of desparation act brute.

SWING STATE FAMILY   March 22nd, 2008 10:59 am ET

I heard Bill Clinton and only a fool would not know what he meant. 'McCarthy' is a name that comes to my mind too. The Clintons are on a quest to divide the Democratic Party - this is not about campaigning!

The Clintons know they blew it in 2008 and now they are preparing for 2012 - for that it's very important for them that the Democrats lose in November. They can't destroy the democratic candidate once the race has been called - that would be too obvious, so they do it now in the nomination process.

The superdelegates have to save the party unity and stop the bleeding !!

With every day they hide they appear more and more like weaklings!

Donny Aminou   March 22nd, 2008 10:59 am ET

Why don' t we just choose a President for his programme instead of he/her difference? The world would have been simpler.

Sean McM   March 22nd, 2008 10:58 am ET

You attract winners, don't you Obama?????

Dress him up in his old uniform, prop him up beside all the flags you use, right next to Wright, etc

ANTI CLINTONS   March 22nd, 2008 10:58 am ET

No, Gen. McPeak is right, the freedom hating Clintons are just like McCarthy and look at what happend to him, died at 47 being an old drunk. No surprise, the guy was an idiot just like the Clintons are.

We need someone is is for the country first, "not the party" it sounds like the commie days to me. Bill Clinton just sounds more and more like a true blue freedon hating liar.

Clinton would be better off to just shut his big beer hole.

Leigh, Richardson made the right choice, what loyalty are you thinking the Clintons have?? they have none except for their own agenda.

Obama Un-Electible   March 22nd, 2008 10:57 am ET

Merrill McPeak was the single most distructive Air Force Chief in the the history of the US Air Force. It took years for true Air Force leaders to set right McPeak's devastingly incompentent decisions. McPeak never had the respect of ANY US Air Force memeber because he was not capable of seeing the future needs of the service. This is the same "clown" who had his "private" F-15 parked at Bolling AFB during his tenure. He was insignificant then and he is insignificant now.

WH DC   March 22nd, 2008 10:56 am ET

I think everything the Clinton's say is being misrepresented or misinterpreted in the media and the facts are twisted. We all know of all the good that came out of the Clinton Administration despite Republican opposition confronted daily. Most of the Obama supporters are too young to know or haven't really studied or checked the facts on this. It is true that Bill isn't running but Bill did more for minorities than any President since the Emancipation Proclamation. Hillary would do just as well. For the black voters to kick the Clinton's to the curb simply because a bi-racial candidate who runs primarily as an African-American is something I just can't seem to swallow. It is very disingenuous to me. I am a true democrat and will vote for the nominee but if it's Obama, I must say I will do it hesitantly.

evans Norway   March 22nd, 2008 10:56 am ET

AT LEAST BILL CLINTON LIED TO THE COUNTRY ON LEWINSKY AND HIS WIFE LIED ON NAFTA AND JOINED TO SEND PEOPLE TO WAR. HER CAMPAIGN HAS LATER SAID THAT LATINOS ONE GOVERNOR IS USELESS. SO, WHO IS THE TRAITOR HERE?

Spider   March 22nd, 2008 10:56 am ET

No matter who you like or dislike, who ever it may be Hillary or Obama… WE must Stand Together!!! and Vote Democratic

I am a Obama supporter, but if Hillary is the pick I will do what's right for the nation and vote for her.

I have a daughter and I do not want her to grow up with another Bush.

We need to start thinking and stop letting the Media divide us. If I have to post this in every blog, every comment box to get my message out there– then I will ….

STOP HATING ON EACH OTHER— AND THINK!!! Vote Democratic NO MATTER WHAT!!!!

This is so stupid……………….as a normal person of ANY color, my take on this quote in simple terms is……….

It would be nice for two people to be able to run for president and love their country without all of this other crap going on. It's the crap that takes their time away from what they are trying to accomplish and it's the same crap that will take their time away should one become president..

Now, was that so very hard? But, since we are not playing by those rules. McPeak needs to go.
